Abstract:This article presents the optimization of system design and calibration algorithm for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) imager based on the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) image sensor. The supply voltage and the gating high-voltage driving circuit of the SPAD are optimized based on the theoretical analysis and experimental data to improve the trigger times of the SPAD for the laser echo. The real-time calibration algorithm is realized in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to obtain the flight time and improve the measurement reliability. A 10-bit time- and area-efficient shifted interframe multievent histogram and a bubbling-based peak detection algorithm are used to calculate flight time, which requires the memory as low as 16 times smaller than storing complete histogram if the pixel values are coded on up to 10 bits and can detect up to four different targets simultaneously without increasing the measurement time. The performance of different kinds of background noise measurement methods is analyzed based on experimental data, which shows that the measurement results are more accurate with the increase of time-to-digital converter (TDC) event detection ability. The proposed crosstalk suppression algorithm based on the LiDAR transmission function can reduce optical crosstalk between adjacent pixels to improve the measurement reliability of the LiDAR imager. The LiDAR imager is presented as capable of measuring a 10-m range with 70-Klux background noise and a $30^{\circ } \times 45^{\circ }$ field of view.

Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (lidar) offers single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution, which is desirable for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging over long distances. Despite important progress, further extending the imaging range presents enormous challenges because only a few echo photons return and are mixed with strong noise. Here, we tackled these challenges by constructing a high-efficiency, low-noise coaxial single-photon lidar system and developing a long-range-tailored computational algorithm that provides high photon efficiency and good noise tolerance. Using this technique, we experimentally demonstrated active single-photon 3D imaging at a distance of up to 45 km in an urban environment, with a low return-signal level of ～1 photon per pixel. Our system is feasible for imaging at a few hundreds of kilometers by refining the setup, and thus represents a step towards low-power and high-resolution lidar over extra-long ranges.

Abstract:Single -photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has played an important role in areas ranging from target identification and 3D imaging to remote sensing. Its high sensitivity provides the feasibility of lightweight LiDAR systems for the resource -limited airborne and spaceborne platforms. Here, we design and demonstrate an airborne single -photon LiDAR towards the compact, small -sized, and low -power payload. To reduce the system size, we utilize small telescopes with an optical aperture of 47 mm and develop the sub -pixel scanning approach to enhance the imaging resolution. With the fine scanning mirrors, we validate the super -resolution ability in the ground experiment by surpassing the system's resolution by 2.5 times and achieve high -resolution 3D imaging in the airborne experiment. To realize low -power LiDAR, we employ photon -efficient computational algorithms and high -quality single -photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays. This enables us to reconstruct images from noisy data even under challenging conditions of two signal photons per pixel. Using the airborne single -photon LiDAR system, we demonstrate 3D imaging during daytime over a large area for remote sensing applications and show the capability to reveal the detailed features of various landforms and objects. Abstract:Long-range active imaging has widespread applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon light detection and ranging (lidar) has been shown to have high sensitivity and temporal resolution. On the application front, however, the operating range of practical single-photon lidar systems is limited to about tens of kilometers over the Earth's atmosphere, mainly due to the weak echo signal mixed with high background noise. Here, we present a compact coaxial single-photon lidar system capable of realizing 3D imaging at up to 201.5 km. It is achieved by using high-efficiency optical devices for collection and detection, and what we believe is a new noise-suppression technique that is efficient for long-range applications. We show that photon-efficient computational algorithms enable accurate 3D imaging over hundreds of kilometers with as few as 0.44 signal photons per pixel. The results represent a significant step toward practical, low-power lidar over extra-long ranges.

Abstract:Single photon LIDAR exhibits exceptional detection sensitivity and finds extensive applications in long-distance measurement and three-dimensional imaging domains. However, it is susceptible to background noise interference, leading to a trade-off between scanning imaging efficiency and angular resolution, thereby limiting its overall performance. In this paper, we propose a novel ‘compression-resampling’ high-resolution imaging method for single-photon scanning LIDAR based on the spatial correlation of the target scene. This approach significantly enhances the system's angular resolution without compromising imaging efficiency. By employing this method, we successfully conducted 3D imaging over distances exceeding 26 km even under challenging conditions with high levels of background noise during daylight hours. Within a target field of view measuring 1° × 1°, we reconstructed a high-resolution 3D point cloud image comprising 1000 × 1410 pixels. Notably, this achievement yielded an impressive angular resolution of 17.4 urad while maintaining an acceptable imaging time of approximately 20 minutes. The results unequivocally demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in improving the quality of three-dimensional imaging and enhancing angular resolution while simultaneously reducing imaging time requirements, thus expanding potential application scenarios for single-photon LIDAR technology.
Compact long-range single-photon imager with dynamic imaging capability

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as a strong candidate technology for active imaging applications. Benefiting from the single-photon sensitivity in detection, long-range active imaging can be realized with a low-power laser and a small-aperture transceiver. However, existing kilometer-range active imagers are bulky and have a long data acquisition time. Here we present a compact co-axial single-photon LiDAR system for kilometer-range 3D imaging. A fiber-based transceiver with a 2.5 cm effective aperture was employed to realize a robust and compact architecture, while a tailored temporal filtering approach guaranteed the high signal-to-noise level. Moreover, a micro-electro-mechanical system scanning mirror was adopted to achieve fast beam scanning. In experiment, high-resolution 3D images of different targets up to 12.8 km were acquired to demonstrate the long-range imaging capability. Furthermore, it exhibits the ability to achieve dynamic imaging at five frames per second over a distance of ∼1km. The results indicate potential in a variety of applications such as remote sensing and long-range target detection.

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as a strong candidate technology for active imaging applications. In particular, the single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution permits high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging capability through atmospheric obscurants including fog, haze and smoke. Here we demonstrate an array-based single-photon LiDAR system, which is capable of performing 3D imaging in atmospheric obscurant over long ranges. By adopting the optical optimization of system and the photon-efficient imaging algorithm, we acquire depth and intensity images through dense fog equivalent to 2.74 attenuation lengths at distances of 13.4 km and 20.0 km. Furthermore, we demonstrate real-time 3D imaging for moving targets at 20 frames per second in mist weather conditions over 10.5 km. The results indicate great potential for practical applications of vehicle navigation and target recognition in challenging weather.

Abstract:Flash LiDAR is a photoelectric system that can acquire a 3D image by emitting a diffuse pulsed laser beam, and hence is suitable for both autopilot and spacecraft flight control. Achieving long-range and high-speed, especially in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In this paper, a set of laser imaging prototype based on 2×6 VCSEL array and 32×32 MPPC array image sensor is developed, the range calibration is completed, and relevant experimental research is carried out. The frame rate of the system can reach 10kHz, the detection probability of 120m range can reach 86.23%, and the maximum walk error is about 0.6m under different reflectivity. The 3D imaging of the vehicle can be realized at about 70m, the horizontal spatial resolution is less than 5cm, and the ranging precision after ten shots average is within 10cm by calculating the centroid of a histogram. The detection probability can be improved by using the time-gating method. After multiple measurements, a 120m "laser imaging through window" can be realized in sunlight. This LiDAR system has the advantages of small volume, light weight and fast detection speed.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) as a significant approach to three-dimensional perception has increasingly suffered from challenges for compact structure, high resolution and strong adaptability. This paper presents a versatile LiDAR system that incorporates multi-beam scanning using Risley prisms and coherent detection based on triangular frequency modulation. By combining Risley-prism-based multi-beam steering model with simultaneous distance and velocity measurements, the LiDAR architecture for three-dimensional imaging is theoretically demonstrated. A unified LiDAR point cloud processing framework is developed, where the multi-mode integrated filtering method is proposed for outlier removal using point cloud characteristics. The coarse-fine coupled strategy is also formulated to combine statistical modeling with iterative optimization for multi-channel point cloud registration. It is experimentally validated that our LiDAR can achieve high-resolution three-dimensional information acquisition against long range, and the proposed point cloud processing technique can fully reconstruct the spatial form of object while preserving sufficient details.

Abstract:This paper reports a complete solution for short-acquisition-time, flood-illumination, and non-scanning 3D imaging. Based on an InGaAs/InP 64×64 Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode array, we developed a single-photon imaging Lidar with a field of view of 19.2 mrad. A spatiotemporal dominant imaging method was also applied for depth estimation under high daytime background noise conditions. In the field tests, 3D imaging information was effectively extracted from objects with strong solar background light. An acquisition time of only 0.5 ms to 4 ms was needed for a building target approximately 1300 m away. The experimental results show that the Lidar and its data processing method have the potential for dynamic scenarios that require high performance 3D imaging, such as vehicle navigation, airborne mapping, and moving target monitoring.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of exposure to ongoing terrorism on 695 Israeli high school students. Exposure was measured using a questionnaire developed for the security situation in Israel. Posttraumatic symptoms were measured using the UCLA PTSD Index for DSM-IV--Adolescent Version (N. Rodriguez, A. Steinberg, & R. S. Pynoos, 1999), functional impairment and somatic complaints were assessed using items derived from the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (C. P. Lucas et al., 2001), and depression was measured with the Brief Beck Depression Inventory (A. T. Beck & R. W. Beck, 1972). According to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), the prevalence of probable posttraumatic stress disorder was 7.6%. Girls reported greater severity of posttraumatic symptoms, whereas boys exhibited greater functional impairment in social and family domains. School-based screening appears to be an effective means of identifying adolescents who have been exposed to terror and are experiencing posttraumatic stress symptomatology and psychosocial impairment.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) with scanning beam has been widely used in autonomous driving and large-scale manufacturing, where the fast-changing scene is of great interest. However, the acquisition rate of current LiDAR is limited by beam steering speed and the round-trip delay, hindering the development of video-rate LiDAR. Here, we uniquely combine all-optical encoders with wavelength-division multiplexing devices to implement spectro-temporal encoding on the illumination light. Parallel detection and fast spectral scanning can be achieved with only one laser and one single photodetector. Our result shows the fastest single-pixel LiDAR to date, and the detection speed can be multiplied with scalability. We demonstrate 3.56-fold improvement of speed for a maximum of 75 m detection range compared with a serial LiDAR. A record acquisition rate of 21.38 MHz for a maximum of 25 m detection range is obtained. This approach has the potential to break the limitation on current ultrafast single-pixel LiDAR and opens a new paradigm for ultrafast-frame-rate imaging systems.

Abstract:The single photon lidar (SPL) system can collect data within a wide range, which is widely used in multispectral depth imaging and underwater depth imaging. However, SPL systems are subject to solar noise and dark count returns, resulting in poor quality of image construction. Therefore, a high-efficiency 3D imaging technology is needed to improve the performance of the SPL system. To address this problem, this paper develops a new short-range single-photon three-dimensional imaging method with both high quality and low complexity. In this paper, we use a 400 × 100 SPAD detector and an 850 nm laser source composed of VCSEL array to reconstruct the 3D image of a target within 5 m. By applying principal component analysis (PCA), the complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by 20 times compared with existing algorithms without compromising imaging quality, making the proposed method a promising candidate to be applied to a wide range of fields such as consumer electronics.

Abstract:Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a 3D imaging technique, widely used in many applications such as augmented reality, automotive, machine vision, spacecraft navigation and landing. Achieving long-ranges and high-speed, most of all in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In the introduction we review different 3D-ranging techniques (stereo-vision, projection with structured light, pulsed-LiDAR, amplitude-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR, frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometry), illumination schemes (single point and blade scanning, flash-LiDAR) and time-resolved detectors for LiDAR (EM-CCD, I-CCD, APD, SPAD, SiPM). Then, we provide an extensive review of silicon- single photon avalanche diode (SPAD)-based LiDAR detectors (both commercial products and research prototypes) analyzing how each architecture faces the main challenges of LiDAR (i.e., long ranges, centimeter resolution, large field-of-view and high angular resolution, high operation speed, background immunity, eye-safety and multi-camera operation). Recent progresses in 3D stacking technologies provided an important step forward in SPAD array development, allowing to reach smaller pitch, higher pixel count and more complex processing electronics. In the conclusions, we provide some guidelines for the design of next generation SPAD-LiDAR detectors.

Abstract:Laser ranging based on a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), offering single-photon level high sensitivity, has been widely adopted in light detection and ranging (lidar) systems for long-distance ranging and imaging applications. Count detection through multiple pulses is commonly used when considering the existence of dark counting and strong background counting during the daytime, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio but at the expense of low detection speed. Here, we report a novel coded-pulse-bunch-laser-based single-photon lidar system, which aims to improve the ranging speed greatly and to expand the unambiguous distance to several kilometers. The schematic principle and construction of the lidar system, as well as the encoding method, are introduced. The time-of-flight (TOF) ranging information is extracted through real-time correlation between the transmitted pulse-bunch patterns and the received echo signals in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A daytime ranging experiment is demonstrated on a non-cooperative mountain target that is 5.4 km away. The method will be of great potential in fast three-dimension (3D) single-photon lidar imaging application for its relatively high data refreshing rate and large unambiguous distance.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), as a hot imaging technology in both industry and academia, has undergone rapid innovation and evolution. The current mainstream direction is towards system miniaturization and integration. There are many metrics that can be used to evaluate the performance of a LiDAR system, such as lateral resolution, ranging accuracy, stability, size, and price. Until recently, with the continuous enrichment of LiDAR application scenarios, the pursuit of imaging speed has attracted tremendous research interest. Particularly, for autonomous vehicles running on motorways or industrial automation applications, the imaging speed of LiDAR systems is a critical bottleneck. In this review, we will focus on discussing the upper speed limit of the LiDAR system. Based on the working mechanism, the limitation of optical parts on the maximum imaging speed is analyzed. The beam scanner has the greatest impact on imaging speed. We provide the working principle of current popular beam scanners used in LiDAR systems and summarize the main constraints on the scanning speed. Especially, we highlight the spectral scanning LiDAR as a new paradigm of ultrafast LiDAR.Additionally, to further improve the imaging speed, we then review the parallel detection methods, which include multiple-detector schemes and multiplexing technologies. Furthermore, we summarize the LiDAR systems with the fastest point acquisition rate reported nowadays. In the outlook, we address the current technical challenges for ultrafast LiDAR systems from different aspects and give a brief analysis of the feasibility of different approaches.

Abstract:The ability to capture the spatial dimensions of the world around us is growing in importance, with the widespread adoption of 3D-sensing used today for secure facial authentication, AR occlusion, robotic vision and SLAM, autonomous driving, and 3D-reconstruction. Most state-of-the-art light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems mainly focus on the sensor design [1]–[4]. However, the optical-electrical system of LiDAR is complex, requiring hardware and software co-optimization across the entire signal chain: high-power sub-1ns pulsed laser drivers, high-efficiency lasers, class-1 laser eye-safety, optical lens for focusing or diffusion, high-SNR single-photon detection receiver arrays, and machine learning (ML) based computational photography.
Pulsed one-dimensional scannerless LiDAR system based on linear APD array

Abstract:The principle of scannerless LiDAR was introduced. The developed one-dimensional scannerless LiDAR system based on linear APD was described. Linear array APD and infrared pulsed nanosecond laser were employed as detector and probe light source respectively. By using the time-of-flight pulsed laser rangefinding technique, the one-dimensional scannerless distance image of the target could be obtained. Parallel multi-channel pre-amplifiers were implemented and high-speed relays were used to switch between channels, by which, the isolation of channels were improved effectively. Several groups of one-dimensional distance imaging experiments were carried out. The results illustrate that the resolutions of multi-channel distance imaging are better than 10 cm and the average standard deviation for channels is approximate to 8.6 cm. The design in this system provides the basis on developing the two-dimensional scannerless LiDAR by APD planar array.

Abstract:Photon counting lidar has the ability to detect weak echo photons. However, in imaging applications, a small number of echo signals obtained in a very short acquisition time cannot get an accurate image estimation through the photon arrival time distribution histogram. Therefore, high-precision and fast imaging of an object using a small amount of weak echo photon signals is urgent to be solved. In this work, a sparse adaptive matching pursuit (SAMP) algorithm is proposed to process the echo photons without prior information to obtain the effective photon interval, which improves the reconstruction quality and imaging speed. By constructing a non-coaxial scanning imaging system to detect the face model, it has been experimentally proven that the proposed algorithm can achieve depth and reflectance image estimation under the condition of low power and low acquisition time of 4μs per pixel on average, and the mean absolute error (MAE) value is reduced by about 10 times compared to conventional reconstruction algorithm.
