Abstract:The effects of polyamines on the spectral properties and thermal stability of different alpha-lactalbumins were measured. Addition of millimolar concentrations of spermine to the Ca(2+)-free (apo) form of bovine or goat alpha-lactalbumin resulted in spectral shifts, in both the far- and near-ultraviolet ranges, similar to those induced by Ca2+ binding. Fluorescence emission spectra of tryptophan residues underwent a pronounced blue shift, concomitant with a decrease in quantum yield. Also, in the presence of spermine, thermal stability was increased. In contrast, in the case of human and to some extent also equine alpha-lactalbumin, the shifts of the CD and fluorescence spectra and the thermal denaturation curves were in the opposite direction. Direct competition of spermine with Mn2+ could be observed for binding to the Ca2+ site of bovine alpha-lactalbumin. As the main binding mode of spermine showed a 1:1 stoichiometry [K1 = (2 +/- 0.5) x 10(4) M-1], we have assumed that binding occurs primarily at this site with one of the distal ammonium groups. In order to accommodate the remaining positively charged ammonium groups of spermine, a binding model was constructed by computer modeling, based on the atomic coordinates of both interacting species. This model makes use of the cluster of negatively charged glutamate residues present in the N-terminal sequence of bovine alpha-lactalbumin, sterically close to the Ca2+ site. The spermine molecule could be nicely fitted in a space delineated by the Ca2+ site, on the one hand, and Glu1, Glu7 and Glu11, on the other. Our model, which has been extended to the shorter polyamines spermidine and putrescine, is able to fully account for the observed stabilization of bovine (and goat) alpha-lactalbumins against thermal denaturation, and for the observed CD and fluorescence spectral shifts. It also explains why human (and equine) alpha-lactalbumin behave differently.
Maternal Protein Restriction and Post-Weaning High-Fat Feeding Alter Plasma Amino Acid Profiles and Hepatic Gene Expression in Mice Offspring.

Abstract:Maternal undernutrition during pregnancy is closely associated with epigenetic changes in the child, and it affects the development of obesity throughout the child's life. Here, we investigate the effect of fetal low protein exposure and post-weaning high-fat consumption on plasma amino acid profiles and hepatic gene expression. Mother C57BL/6J mice were fed a 20% (CN) or 9% (LP) casein diet during pregnancy. After birth, the male offspring of both these groups were fed a high-fat diet (HF) from 6 to 32 weeks. At 32 weeks, the final body weight between the two groups remained unchanged, but the LP-HF group showed markedly higher white fat weight and plasma leptin levels. The LP-HF group exhibited a significant increase in the concentrations of isoleucine, leucine, histidine, phenylalanine, serine, and tyrosine. However, no differences were observed in the lipid content in the liver. According to the hepatic gene expression analysis, the LP-HF group significantly upregulated genes involved in the chromatin modification/organization pathways. Thus, maternal low protein and a post-weaning high-fat environment contributed to severe obesity states and changes in gene expression related to hepatic chromatin modification in offspring. These findings provide novel insights for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases at the early life stage.

Abstract:Maternal nutrition during the critical period of pregnancy increases the susceptibility of offspring to the development of diseases later in life. This study aimed to analyze metabolite profiles to investigate the effect of maternal diet during pregnancy on changes in offspring plasma metabolites and to identify correlations with metabolic parameters. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to under- and overnutrition compared to controls, and their offspring were fed a standard diet after birth. Plasma metabolism was profiled in offspring at 16 weeks of age using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). We analyzed 80 metabolites to identify distinct metabolites and metabolic and neurodegenerative disease-associated metabolites that were sex-differentially altered in each group compared to controls (p 1.0). Specifically, changes in 3-indolepropionic acid, anthranilic acid, linoleic acid, and arachidonic acid, which are involved in tryptophan and linoleic acid metabolism, were observed in male offspring and correlated with plasma leptin levels in male offspring. Our results suggest that fatty acids involved in tryptophan and linoleic acid metabolism, which are altered by the maternal diet during pregnancy, may lead to an increased risk of metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases in the early life of male offspring.

The maternal microbiome modifies adverse effects of protein undernutrition on offspring neurobehavioral impairment in mice

Abstract:Protein undernutrition is a global risk factor for impaired growth and neurobehavioral development in children. However, the critical periods, environmental interactions, and maternal versus neonatal influences on programming lasting behavioral abnormalities are poorly understood. In a mouse model of fetal growth restriction, limiting maternal protein intake particularly during pregnancy leads to cognitive and anxiety-like behavioral abnormalities in adult offspring, indicating a critical role for the gestational period. By cross-fostering newborn mice to dams previously exposed to either low protein or standard diet, we find that the adult behavioral impairments require diet-induced conditioning of both fetal development and maternal peripartum physiology, rather than either alone. This suggests that protein undernutrition during pregnancy directly disrupts fetal neurodevelopment and indirectly alters maternal state in ways that interact postnatally to precipitate behavioral deficits. Consistent with this, maternal protein restriction during pregnancy reduces the diversity of the maternal gut microbiome, modulates maternal serum metabolomic profiles, and yields widespread alterations in fetal brain transcriptomic and metabolomic profiles, including subsets of microbiome-dependent metabolites. Depletion of the maternal microbiome in protein-restricted dams further alters fetal brain gene expression and exacerbates neurocognitive behavior in adult offspring, suggesting that the maternal microbiome modifies the impact of gestational protein undernutrition on risk for neurobehavioral impairment in the offspring. To explore the potential for microbiome-targeted interventions, we find that maternal treatment with short chain fatty acids or a cocktail of 10 diet- and microbiome-dependent metabolites each yield differential effects on fetal development and/or postnatal behavior. Results from this study highlight impactful prenatal influences of maternal protein undernutrition on fetal neurodevelopment and adverse neurobehavioral trajectories in offspring, which are mitigated by microbiome-targeted interventions during pregnancy.

Perinatal protein malnutrition alters maternal behavior and leads to maladaptive stress response, neurodevelopmental delay and disruption on DNA methylation machinery in female mice offspring

Abstract:Deficiencies in maternal nutrition have long-term consequences affecting brain development of the progeny and its behavior. In the present work, female mice were exposed to a normal-protein or a low-protein diet during gestation and lactation. We analyzed behavioral and molecular consequences of malnutrition in dams and how it affects female offspring at weaning. We have observed that a low-protein diet during pregnancy and lactation leads to anxiety-like behavior and anhedonia in dams. Protein malnutrition during the perinatal period delays physical and neurological development of female pups. Glucocorticoid levels increased in the plasma of malnourished female offspring but not in dams when compared to the control group. Interestingly, the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) was reduced in hippocampus and amygdala on both malnourished dams and female pups. In addition, malnourished pups exhibited a significant increase in the expression of Dnmt3b, Gadd45b, and Fkbp5 and a reduction in Bdnf VI variant mRNA in hippocampus. In contrast, a reduction on Dnmt3b has been observed on the amygdala of weaned mice. No changes have been observed on global methylation levels (5-methylcytosine) in hippocampal genomic DNA neither in dams nor female offspring. In conclusion, deregulated behaviors observed in malnourished dams might be mediated by a low expression of GR in brain regions associated with emotive behaviors. Additionally, low-protein diet differentially deregulates the expression of genes involved in DNA methylation/demethylation machinery in female offspring but not in dams, providing an insight into regional- and age-specific mechanisms due to protein malnutrition.
Folic acid and protein content in maternal diet and postnatal high-fat feeding affect the tissue levels of iron, zinc, and copper in the rat

Abstract:Although maternal, fetal, and placental mechanisms compensate for disturbances in the fetal environment, any nutritional inadequacies present during pregnancy may affect fetal metabolism, and their consequences may appear in later life. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influence of maternal diet during gestation on Fe, Zn, and Cu levels in the livers and kidneys of adult rats. The study was carried out on the offspring (n = 48) of mothers fed either a protein-balanced or a protein-restricted diet (18% vs. 9% casein) during pregnancy, with or without folic acid supplementation (0.005- vs. 0.002-g folic acid/kg diet). At 10 weeks of age, the offspring of each maternal group were randomly assigned to groups fed either the AIN-93G diet or a high-fat diet for 6 weeks, until the end of the experiment. The levels of Fe, Zn, and Cu in the livers and kidneys were determined by the F-AAS method. It was found that postnatal exposure to the high-fat diet was associated with increased hepatic Fe levels (p < 0.001), and with decreased liver Zn and Cu contents (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively), as well as with decreased renal Cu contents (p < 0.001). Moreover, the offspring's tissue mineral levels were also affected by protein and folic acid content in the maternal diet. Both prenatal protein restriction and folic acid supplementation increased the liver Zn content (p < 0.05) and the kidney Zn content (p < 0.001; p < 0.05, respectively), while folic acid supplementation resulted in a reduction in renal Cu level (p < 0.05). Summarizing, the results of this study show that maternal dietary folic acid and protein intake during pregnancy, as well as the type of postweaning diet, affect Fe, Zn, and Cu levels in the offspring of the rat. However, the mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are unclear, and warrant further investigation.

Abstract:Parental nutrition can impact the health of future generations, programming the offspring for the development of diseases. The developing germ cells of the offspring could be damaged by the maternal or the paternal environment. The germ cells in development and their function could be affected by nutritional adversity and therefore, harm the health of subsequent generations. The paternal or maternal intake of high-fat diets has been shown to affect the reproductive health of male offspring, leading to imbalance in hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, testicular oxidative stress, low testosterone production, and changes in sperm count, viability, motility, and morphology. There is a need for studies that address the combined effects of diets with a high-fat and high-sugar (H) content by both progenitors on male reproduction. In this context, our study evaluated epigenetic parameters and the inflammatory response that could be associated to oxidative stress in testis and epididymis of adult offspring. 90 days-old male rats were divided according to the combination of the parental diet: CD (control paternal and maternal diet), HP (H paternal diet and control maternal diet), HM (H maternal diet and control paternal diet) and HPM (H paternal and maternal diet).We evaluated serum levels of testosterone and FSH; testicular gene expression of steroidogenic enzymes Star and Hsd17b3 and epigenetic markers Dnmt1 , Dnmt3a , Dnmt3b , and Mecp2 ; testicular and epididymal levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-1β; testicular and epididymal activity of SOD, CAT, and GST; the oxidative markers MDA and CP; the daily sperm production, sperm transit time, and sperm morphology. Testicular epigenetic parameter, inflammatory response, oxidative balance, and daily sperm production of the offspring were affected by the maternal diet; paternal diet influenced serum testosterone levels, and lower daily sperm production was exacerbated by the interaction effect of both parental intake of high-fat high-sugar diet in the testis. There was isolated maternal and paternal effect in the antioxidant enzyme activity in the cauda epididymis, and an interaction effect of both parents in protein oxidative marker. Maternal effect could also be observed in cytokine production of cauda epididymis, and no morphological effects were observed in the sperm. The potential programming effects of isolated or combined intake of a high-fat high-sugar diet by the progenitors could be observed at a molecular level in the reproductive health of male offspring in early adulthood.

Abstract:Iron deficiency in early development has been associated with irreversible alterations in brain myelination, but whether these neural changes are mirrored in altered behaviors in rats is not known. The goals were to determine if dietary induced gestational and lactational iron deficiency alters brain myelination and behaviors dependent on that system. Pregnant rats were randomly assigned to control (CN) or iron-deficient (ID) groups by providing iron-sufficient (40ppm Fe) or iron-deficient (2–6ppm Fe) diets from gestational day 5 through to weaning of pups. Thereafter, all offspring were fed the iron-sufficient diet. The myelination of subcortical white matter and the fimbria of hippocampus was measured by 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′-phosphohydrolase (CNPase, marker of oligodendrocyte) density at 25 days of age. Specific behavioral assessments were performed at multiple time points after birth. By contrast, ID rats had significantly lower density of CNPase in the subcortical white matter but the density of CNPase in fimbria of hippocampus was comparable to CN rats. Moreover, ID rats showed significant behavioral impairments in surface righting reflex, negative geotaxis reflex, vibrissae-evoked forelimb placing test and novel object recognition task. In conclusion, perinatal iron deficiency can significantly alter behavioral outcomes which may be due to delayed myelination in specific brain regions.
Maternal high-fat diet-induced microbiota changes are associated with alterations in embryonic brain metabolites and adolescent behaviour

Abstract:The developing central nervous system is highly sensitive to nutrient changes during the perinatal period, emphasising the potential impact of alterations of maternal diet on offspring brain development and behaviour. A growing body of research implicates the gut microbiota in neurodevelopment and behaviour. Maternal overweight and obesity during the perinatal period has been linked to changes in neurodevelopment, plasticity and affective disorders in the offspring, with implications for microbial signals from the maternal gut. Here we investigate the impact of maternal high-fat diet (mHFD)-induced changes in microbial signals on offspring brain development, and neuroimmune signals, and the enduring effects on behaviour into adolescence. We first demonstrate that maternal caecal microbiota composition at term pregnancy (embryonic day 18: E18) differs significantly in response to maternal diet. Moreover, mHFD resulted in the upregulation of microbial genes in the maternal intestinal tissue linked to alterations in quinolinic acid synthesis and elevated kynurenine levels in the maternal plasma, both neuronal plasticity mediators related to glutamate metabolism. Metabolomics of mHFD embryonic brains at E18 also detected molecules linked to glutamate-glutamine cycle, including glutamic acid, glutathione disulphide, and kynurenine. During adolescence, the mHFD offspring exhibited increased locomotor activity and anxiety-like behaviour in a sex-dependent manner, along with upregulation of glutamate-related genes compared to controls. Overall, our results demonstrate that maternal exposure to high-fat diet results in microbiota changes, behavioural imprinting, altered brain metabolism, and glutamate signalling during critical developmental windows during the perinatal period.
Long-Term Impact of Maternal Protein Malnutrition on Learning and Memory Abilities and DNA Methylating Profiles of the Nervous System in Offspring Rats

Abstract:Objective: To determine the mechanisms by which protein deficiency during pregnancy can lead to long-term alterations in learning and memory abilities of the offspring in rats. Study design: Fourty-two pregnant rats were fed control (n = 23) or low protein (n = 19) diets ad libitum until parturition. On the 8th week of post-natal life which represented early adulthood, eighty-four offsprings (control group: n = 52, LP group: n = 32) were determined their learning & memory ability by using the Morris water maze test. Six offprings’ brain tissue (control group: n = 3, LP group: n = 3) was also analysed for DNA methylating profiles, the GO and KEGG pathways, methylation status and twelve for protein expression (control group: n = 6, LP group: n = 6). Results: The offsprings of the protein-deficient-diet fed rats learnt faster initially then lagged behind those of the control rats, especially in female rats (p = 0.035). There were a series of genes methylated in the CpG island and pormoter area. Quantitative Mass Array data showed methylation differences in Grin2b and Grin2b_3CpG 3, 4, & 5 might be the target sites as shown by dual-luciferase assay. A decreased level of protein expression of NMDAR2B was observed. Conclusion: Differential methylation status in Grin2b and changes in expression of NMDAR2B may partially explain the long-term impact of maternal protein deficiency on the cognitive and learning capabilities of offsprings.

Abstract:Diet of mothers during gestation may impact offspring phenotype. This study evaluated the consequences of a maternal High-Protein (HP) diet during gestation on food preferences and phenotypic characteristics in adult rat offspring. Dams were fed a HP or a Normal-Protein (NP) isocaloric diet during gestation only. Weaned female pups were divided into 3 diet groups: NP control or one of two dietary self-selection (DSS) conditions. In DSS1, offspring had a free choice between proteins (100%) or a mix of carbohydrates (88%) and lipids (12%). In DSS2, the choice was between proteins (100%), carbohydrate (100%) or lipids (100%). DSS2 groups consumed more of their energy from protein and lipids, with a decreased carbohydrate intake (p < 0.0001) compared to NP groups, regardless of the maternal diet. Offspring from HP gestation dams fed the DSS2 diet (HPDSS2) had a 41.2% increase of total adiposity compared to NPDSS2 (p < 0.03). Liver Insulin receptor and Insulin substrate receptor 1 expression was decreased in offspring from HP compared to NP gestation dams. These results showed the specific effects of DSS and maternal diet and data suggested that adult, female offspring exposed to a maternal HP diet during foetal life were more prone to adiposity development, in response to postweaning food conditions.

Molecular phylogenetics supports widespread cryptic species in moonworts (Botrychium s.s., Ophioglossaceae).

Abstract:PREMISE OF THE STUDY Previous phylogenetic studies of moonworts (Botrychium sensu stricto (s.s.)) included few taxa from outside of North America. This low geographical representation limited interpretations of relationships of this group rich in cryptic species. With 18 out of 30 species in the genus being polyploid, understanding their evolutionary history remains a major challenge. METHODS A new molecular phylogeny was reconstructed using Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI) analyses based on multiple accessions of the most wide-ranging Arctic taxa of Botrychium in North America and Europe using three noncoding plastid DNA regions (psbA-trnH(GUG), trnL(UAA)-trnF(GAA) intergenic spacer, and rpL16 intron). KEY RESULTS The new phylogeny confirms the identity of several recently described species and proposed new taxa. Nine subclades are newly identified within the two major clades in Botrychium s.s.: Lanceolatum and Lunaria. Chloroplast DNA was variable enough to separate morphologically cryptic species in the Lunaria clade. On the contrary, much less variation is seen within the morphologically variable Lanceolatum clade despite sampling over the same broad geographic range. The chloroplast region psbA-trnH(GUG) is identified as an efficient DNA barcode for the identification of cryptic taxa in Botrychium s.s. CONCLUSIONS The combined increase in species representation, samples from throughout the geographic range of each species, and sequencing of multiple plastid DNA regions supports morphologically cryptic species in Botrychium s.s.
Impacts of maternal dietary protein intake on fetal survival, growth, and development

Abstract:Maternal nutrition during gestation, especially dietary protein intake, is a key determinant in embryonic survival, growth, and development. Low maternal dietary protein intake can cause embryonic losses, intra-uterine growth restriction, and reduced postnatal growth due to a deficiency in specific amino acids that are important for cell metabolism and function. Of note, high maternal dietary protein intake can also result in intra-uterine growth restriction and embryonic death, due to amino acid excesses, as well as the toxicity of ammonia, homocysteine, and H 2 S that are generated from amino acid catabolism. Maternal protein nutrition has a pronounced impact on fetal programming and alters the expression of genes in the fetal genome. As a precursor to the synthesis of molecules (e.g. nitric oxide, polyamines, and creatine) with cell signaling and metabolic functions, L-arginine (Arg) is essential during pregnancy for growth and development of the conceptus. With inadequate maternal dietary protein intake, Arg and other important amino acids are deficient in mother and fetus. Dietary supplementation of Arg during gestation has been effective in improving embryonic survival and development of the conceptus in many species, including humans, pigs, sheep, mice, and rats. Both the balance among amino acids and their quantity are critical for healthy pregnancies and offspring. Impact statement This review aims at: highlighting adverse effects of elevated levels of ammonia in mother or fetus on embryonic/fetal survival, growth, and development; helping nutritionists and practitioners to understand the mechanisms whereby elevated levels of ammonia in mother or fetus results in embryonic/fetal death, growth restriction, and developmental abnormalities; and bringing, into the attention of nutritionists and practitioners, the problems of excess or inadequate dietary intake of protein or amino acids on pregnancy outcomes in animals and humans. The article provides new, effective means to improve embryonic/fetal survival and growth in mammals.

Excessive folic acid intake combined with undernutrition during gestation alters offspring behavior and brain monoamine profiles

Abstract:Dietary folic acid augmentation during gestation reduces neurodevelopmental disorder risk in offspring; however, it is still unclear if excessive maternal folic acid intake can impair brain function in offspring. We examined if excessive folic acid intake throughout gestation altered the behavior of male offspring under poor nutrition during early gestation (E5.5–E11.5). Dams were divided into four groups: control (CON, 2 mg folic acid/kg of food), excessive folic acid fortification (FF, 10 mg folic acid/kg of food), undernutrition (UN, 40% food reduction from E5.5–E11.5), and excessive folic acid fortification plus undernutrition (UN‐FF). Excess maternal folic acid fortification induced hyperactivity in the open field and lower anxiety‐like behavior in the elevated plus maze at 9 weeks of age. These behavioral changes were accompanied by reduced dopamine in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), norepinephrine in the amygdala, and 5‐hydroxytryptamine (5‐HT) in the dorsal midbrain (DM), PFC, and amygdala where 5‐HT neurons project from the DM. Furthermore, canonical. Canonical discriminant analysis, including dopamine and DOPAC concentrations in the PFC, norepinephrine concentrations in the PFC, amygdala, and pons, and 5‐HT and 5‐HIAA concentrations in the amygdala and DM, correctly classified 73.5% of the offspring in CON, FF, UN, and UN‐FF groups. The first discriminant function mainly classified groups based on nutritional status, whereas the second function mainly classified groups based on folic acid intake. Our study suggests that combined transformations of brain monoamine profiles by maternal undernutrition and excess folic acid intake is involved in the behavioral alteration of offsprings. Maternal Hyperhomocysteinemia Induces Neuroinflammation and Neuronal Death in the Rat Offspring Cortex

Abstract:Maternal hyperhomocysteinemia is one of the common complications of pregnancy that causes offspring cognitive deficits during postnatal development. In the present work, we evaluated the effect of prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia on structural and ultrastructural organization, neuronal and glial cell number, apoptosis (caspase-3 content and activity), inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β), and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) phosphorylation in the offspring brain cortex in early ontogenesis. Wistar female rats received methionine (0.6 g/kg body weight) by oral administration during pregnancy. Histological and biochemical analyses of 5- and 20-day-old pups' cortical tissue were performed. Lysosome accumulation and other neurodegenerative changes in neurons of animals with impaired embryonic development were investigated by electron microscopy. Neuronal staining (anti-NeuN) revealed a reduction in neuronal number, accompanied by increasing of caspase-3 active form protein level and activity. Maternal hyperhomocysteinemia also elevated the number of astroglial and microglial cells and increased expression of interleukin-1β and p38 MAPK phosphorylation, which indicates the development of neuroinflammatory processes.

Abstract:Arylamine-hemoglobin adducts are a valuable dosimeter for assessing arylamine exposures and carcinogenic risk. The effects of age, sex, time-course, dose, and acetylator genotype on levels of 2-aminofluorene-hemoglobin adducts were investigated in homozygous rapid (Bio. 82.73/H-Patr) and slow (Bio. 82.73/H-Pats) acetylator hamsters congenic at the polymorphic (NAT2) acetylator locus. Following administration of a single ip dose of [3H]2-aminofluorene, peak 2-aminofluorene-hemoglobin adduct levels were achieved at 12-18 hr and retained a plateau up to 72 hr postinjection in both rapid and slow acetylator congenic hamsters. 2-Aminofluorene-hemoglobin adduct levels did not differ significantly between young (5-6 weeks) and old (32-49 weeks) hamsters or between male and female hamsters within either acetylator genotype. 2-Aminofluorene-hemoglobin adduct levels increased in a dose-dependent manner (r = 0.95, p = 0.0001) and were consistently higher in slow versus rapid acetylator congenic hamsters in studies of both time-course and dose-effect. The magnitude of the acetylator genotype-dependent difference was a function of dose; 2-aminofluorene-hemoglobin adduct levels were 1.5-fold higher in slow acetylator congenic hamsters following a 60 mg/kg 2-aminofluorene dose (p = 0.0013) but 2-fold higher following a 100 mg/kg 2-aminofluorene dose (p < 0.0001). These results show a specific and significant role for NAT2 acetylator genotype in formation of arylamine-hemoglobin adducts, which may reflect the relationship between acetylator genotype and the incidence of different cancers from arylamine exposures.

In the context of the abortion issue domain, secularists, fundamentalists, and Catholics exhibit high tolerance. This finding persists even when attitudes toward the pro-life movement, frequency of church attendance, and a number of other predictors of tolerance are included in the analysis.

Abstract:Herein, we present a thorough examination of the impact of maternal nutrition on fetal and infant neurodevelopment, focusing on specific nutrients and their critical roles in perinatal and pediatric health. Through a comprehensive narrative review of the literature, this study highlights the importance of a balanced maternal diet rich in nutrients like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), folic acid, iron, and iodine in shaping children's neurological functions. Key findings underscore the influence of maternal nutrition during pregnancy and the peri-gestational period on children's cognitive, motor, speech, and socio-emotional development. Deficiencies in essential nutrients, such as DHA, are linked to adverse long-lasting outcomes such as premature birth and intrauterine growth restriction, where a suitable intake of iron and folic acid is vital to prevent neural tube defects and promote healthy brain development. We highlight areas requiring further investigation, particularly regarding iodine's impact and the risks associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. In conclusion, this research sheds light on our current understanding of maternal nutrition and child neurodevelopment, offering valuable insights for health professionals and researchers.

Abstract:Continuing medical education providers accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) may apply organizational assessment strategies beyond the ACCME Essential Areas, Elements, and Criteria. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program offers an organizational assessment strategy commonly used in business, health care, and education settings. An analysis of both standards pointed out useful associations between the ACCME Essential Areas and the Baldrige National Quality Program Education Criteria (2003). Including leadership, governance, and social responsibility, the Baldrige Education Criteria provide a more comprehensive organizational assessment and stronger emphasis on a wider variety of results. The present analysis suggests that a continuing medical education provider could meet, and possibly exceed, the ACCME standards by applying the Baldrige Education Criteria in a "self-study" process to define, measure, monitor, and document fundamental organizational responsibilities and performance.

Abstract:More than two-thirds of women during childbearing years (20–39 years old) are overweight or obese in the United States, with protein intake among 20–49-year-old women being 1.6 times higher than recommended (75.4 g/day versus 46 g/day) that can be considered as a relatively high-protein diet (HPD). Both gestational obesity and HPDs during gestation adversely affect offspring health. This study investigates the impact of HPDs fed during gestation and lactation on obese mothers and their offspring in Wistar rats. Dams randomized to either a normal-protein diet (NPD) or HPD (n = 12/group). Pups from each maternal group were weaned to either NPD or HPD for 17 weeks (n = 12/group). No effect of maternal or weaning diet on food intake, body weight, or body fat/weight ratio was observed. However, NPD dams exhibited higher glucose area under the curve compared with HPD dams (p < 0.03). At weaning, offspring born to NPD dams showed higher fasting plasma glucose (P < 0.03) and insulin/glucose ratio (P = 0.05) than those born to HPD dams. The Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index was higher in offspring born to NPD dams (P < 0.04) and weaned to NPD (P < 0.05) at week 17. These findings underscore the role of high-protein maternal and weaning diets in pregnancy outcomes for obese mothers, particularly in glucose homeostasis, although gestational obesity may overshadow other parameters. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact on both maternal and offspring health and their underlying mechanisms in this context.
