Abstract:The rapid development of industrialization is causing several fundamental problems in plants due to the interaction between plants and soil contaminated with metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Numerous investigations have been conducted to address the severe toxic effects caused by nanoparticles in the past few decades. Based on the composition, size, concentration, physical and chemical characteristics of metallic NPs, and plant types, it enhances or lessens the plant growth at various developmental stages. Metallic NPs are uptaken by plant roots and translocated toward shoots via vascular system based on composition, size, shape as well as plant anatomy and cause austere phytotoxicity. Herein, we tried to summarize the toxicity induced by the uptake and accumulation of NPs in plants and also we explored the detoxification mechanism of metallic NPs adopted by plants via using different phytohormones, signaling molecules, and phytochelatins. This study was intended to be an unambiguous assessment including current knowledge on NPs uptake, accumulation, and translocation in higher plants. Furthermore, it will also provide sufficient knowledge to the scientific community to understand the metallic NPs-induced inhibitory effects and mechanisms involved within plants.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) are among the most harmful environmental constraints, threatening a wide range of life-forms, including plants. HMs significantly impair plant metabolism by interfering with the function of critical cellular biomolecules and ultimately lead to reduced crop yields. Various strategies were used to overcome the HM toxicity; among this use of nanoparticles (NPs) is a relatively new, effective, and efficient approach than the other conventional techniques. NPs decrease the mobility and bioavailability of HMs in soil, enhancing the proficiency of the apoplastic barrier within plants to restrict HM movement. NPs protect the plants' antioxidant system by increasing the activities of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, collectively enhancing their role as stress mitigators. The current article discusses the role and mechanism of NPs to alleviate HM stress in soil and plants. The various factors affecting the interaction of NPs with HMs and toxicity raised by these materials in environment are also discussed. This article also discusses the future recommendations for utilization of NPs in plants to alleviate HM stress.

Ascorbic Acid and Selenium Nanoparticles Synergistically Interplay in Chromium Stress Mitigation in Rice Seedlings by Regulating Oxidative Stress Indicators and Antioxidant Defense Mechanism

Abstract:Ascorbic acid (AsA) and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were versatile plant growth regulators, playing multiple roles in promoting plant growth under heavy metal stresses. This study aimed to evaluate the beneficial role of individual and combined effects of AsA and SeNPs on morpho-physio-biochemical traits of rice with or without chromium (Cr) amendment. The results indicated that Cr negatively affected plant biomass, gas exchange parameters, total soluble sugar, proline, relative water contents, and antioxidant-related gene expression via increasing reactive oxygen species (MDA, H2O2, O2•−) formation, resulting in plant growth reduction. The application of AsA and SeNPs, individually or in combination, decreased the uptake and translocation of Cr in rice seedlings, increased seedlings with tolerance to Cr toxicity, and significantly improved the rice seedling growth. Most notably, AsA + SeNP treatment strengthened the antioxidative defense system through ROS quenching and Cr detoxification. The results collectively suggested that the application of AsA and SeNPs alone or in combination had the potential to alleviate Cr toxicity in rice and possibly other crop species.

Abstract:Plants are very often confronted by different heavy metal (HM) stressors that adversely impair their growth and productivity. Among HMs, chromium (Cr) is one of the most prevalent toxic trace metals found in agricultural soils because of anthropogenic activities, lack of efficient treatment, and unregulated disposal. It has a huge detrimental impact on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular traits of crops, in addition to being carcinogenic to humans. In soil, Cr exists in different forms, including Cr (III) "trivalent" and Cr (VI) "hexavalent", but the most pervasive and severely hazardous form to the biota is Cr (VI). Despite extensive research on the effects of Cr stress, the exact molecular mechanisms of Cr sensing, uptake, translocation, phytotoxicity, transcript processing, translation, post-translational protein modifications, as well as plant defensive responses are still largely unknown. Even though plants lack a Cr transporter system, it is efficiently accumulated and transported by other essential ion transporters, hence posing a serious challenge to the development of Cr-tolerant cultivars. In this review, we discuss Cr toxicity in plants, signaling perception, and transduction. Further, we highlight various mitigation processes for Cr toxicity in plants, such as microbial, chemical, and nano-based priming. We also discuss the biotechnological advancements in mitigating Cr toxicity in plants using plant and microbiome engineering approaches. Additionally, we also highlight the role of molecular breeding in mitigating Cr toxicity in sustainable agriculture. Finally, some conclusions are drawn along with potential directions for future research in order to better comprehend Cr signaling pathways and its mitigation in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:The rapid development of nanotechnology and the potential environmental risk of wide application of artificial nanoparticles (NPs) have raised considerable concerns. Metal-based nanoparticles (MB NPs) have dual-toxicity of metal and NPs, and thus, their bio-toxicity and ecological risk are the hotspots in the studies of nanotoxicology. Plant, as a main component of ecosystem, is a potential pathway for NPs bioaccumulation and entering into food chain. This paper discussed the MB NPs absorption, translocation, and accumulation by plants, and summarized the eco-toxicological effect of MB NPs on plants and related mechanisms. The factors affecting the phytotoxicity of MB NPs were approached, and the research progress on the eco-toxicological effect of MB NPs on plants, especially on food crops, was reviewed. Also, the existing problems in present MB NPs phytotoxicity studies were analyzed, and the future research directions were proposed.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nano particles (ZnO NPs) have been employed as a novel strategy to regulate plant tolerance and alleviate heavy metal stress, but our scanty knowledge regarding the systematic role of ZnO NPs to ameliorate chromium (Cr) stress especially in rice necessitates an in-depth investigation. An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of ZnO NPs (e.g., 0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L) in ameliorating the Cr toxicity and accumulation in rice seedlings in hydroponic system. Our results demonstrated that Cr (100 μM) severely inhibited the rice seedling growth, whereas exogenous treatment of ZnO NPs significantly alleviated Cr toxicity stress and promoted the plant growth. Moreover, application of ZnO NPs significantly augmented the germination energy, germination percentage, germination index, and vigor index. In addition, biomass accumulation, antioxidants (SOD, CAT, POD), nutrient acquisition (Zn, Fe) was also improved in ZnO NPs-treated plants, while the lipid peroxidation (MDA, H 2 O 2 ), electrolyte leakage as well as Cr uptake and in-planta accumulation was significantly decreased. The burgeoning effects were more apparent at ZnO NPs (100 mg/L) suggesting the optimum treatment to ameliorate Cr induced oxidative stress in rice plants. Furthermore, the treatment of ZnO NPs (100 mg/L) reduced the level of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and stimulated the growth regulator hormones such as brassinosteroids (BRs) possibly linked with enhanced phytochelatins (PCs) levels. The ultrastructure analysis at cellular level of rice revealed that the application of 100 mg/L ZnO NPs protected the chloroplast integrity and other cell organells via improvement in plant ionomics, antioxidant activities and down regulating Cr induced oxidative stress in rice plants. Conclusively, observations of the current study will be helpful in developing stratigies to decrease Cr contamination in food chain by employing ZnO NPs and to mitigate the drastic effects of Cr in plants for the sustainable crop growth.

Abstract:Heavy metal accumulation causes huge environmental problems, particularly in agricultural ecosystems which have deteriorative effects on the yield and quality of crops. Individual copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) effects have been investigated extensively in plants; however, co-contamination of Cu and Cr induced stress on Brassica napus L. is still unclear. In the present experiment, the interactive effects of Cu and Cr were studied in two B. napus cultivars (Zheda 622 and ZS 758). Results showed that the application of Cr was more toxic than Cu, and their combined stress had shown a significant adverse effect on plant growth. Biomass and photosynthetic pigment were decreased remarkably under all metal treatments. Individual treatments of Cu and Cr and their combination cause the accumulation of ROS and lipid peroxidation. Moreover, the activities of antioxidant enzymes and their mRNA transcription levels, such as catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase, were increased, especially when treated with Cr alone or under Cu+Cr combined treatment in both cultivars, except for the CAT activity which was decreased in both leaves and roots of sensitive cultivar Zheda 622 as compared with their respective controls. Additionally, nonenzymatic antioxidants like reduced and oxidized glutathione showed a differential activity pattern in roots and leaves of both cultivars. A more pronounced modification in chloroplast ultrastructure was observed in both cultivars under Cu+Cr treatment followed by Cr and Cu alone treatments. Furthermore, synergistic effects of Cu and Cr were prominent; this may be due to the enhanced metals uptake under combined treatment, which suggests that Cr and Cu interaction is not competitive but is rather additive and genotypic-dependent.

Abstract:Purpose of review Angina pectoris affects at least 6.6 million people in the US and approximately 400 000 new cases of stable angina occur each year. Angina may be one of the first signs of ischemic heart disease, although it is likely not causally related to the likelihood of plaque rupture leading to an acute coronary syndrome. Modalities for treatment of angina should be used maximally to improve quality of life and decrease cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The current recommended pharmacologic and invasive approaches, as well as novel therapies, are reviewed. Recent findings Antiischemic agents, including beta-blockers, nitrates and calcium channel blockers, remain the mainstay in the prevention of angina. Revascularization via percutaneous interventions or coronary bypass surgery are appropriate in specific cases or when medical treatment fails. Noninvasive treatment options for refractory angina, metabolic agents, and vasodilator therapies are adding to the armamentarium to prevent and treat angina. Summary A multifaceted approach is optimal to address the prevention of angina. Once angina is recognized, there are many modalities that lessen the incidence of daily life-induced and exercise-induced angina and ischemia. Angina management is best addressed by pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd), as the most prevalent heavy metal contaminant poses serious risks to plants, humans, and the environment. The ubiquity of this toxic metal is continuously increasing due to the rapid discharge of industrial and mining effluents and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a novel strategy to alleviate Cd toxicity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have become the most important NPs used to mitigate the toxicity of abiotic stresses and improve crop productivity. The plants quickly absorb Cd, which subsequently disrupts plant physiological and biochemical processes and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes the oxidation of cellular structures and significant growth losses. Besides this, Cd toxicity also disrupts leaf osmotic pressure, nutrient uptake, membrane stability, chlorophyll synthesis, and enzyme activities, leading to a serious reduction in growth and biomass productivity. Though plants possess an excellent defense mechanism to counteract Cd toxicity, this is not enough to counter higher concentrations of Cd toxicity. Applying Zn-NPs has proven to have significant potential in mitigating the toxic effects of Cd. ZnO-NPs improve chlorophyll synthesis, photosynthetic efficiency, membrane stability, nutrient uptake, and gene expression, which can help to counter toxic effects of Cd stress. Additionally, ZnO-NPs also help to reduce Cd absorption and accumulation in plants, and the complex relationship between ZnO-NPs, osmolytes, hormones, and secondary metabolites plays an important role in Cd tolerance. Thus, this review concentrates on exploring the diverse mechanisms by which ZnO nanoparticles can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. In the end, this review has identified various research gaps that need addressing to ensure the promising future of ZnO-NPs in mitigating Cd toxicity. The findings of this review contribute to gaining a deeper understanding of the role of ZnO-NPs in combating Cd toxicity to promote safer and sustainable crop production by remediating Cd-polluted soils. This also allows for the development of eco-friendly approaches to remediate Cd-polluted soils to improve soil fertility and environmental quality.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a potential technique for increasing agricultural output by producing nano-fertilizers, improving herbicide and pesticide efficacy, regulating soil fertility, managing wastewater, and detecting illnesses. It is also virtuous for industrial food processing since it boosts market value, improves nutritional and sensory properties, enhances safety, and boosts antibacterial protection. Moreover, nanotechnology may also assist farmers in reducing post-harvest losses by prolonging shelf life via the use of nanoparticles. Furthermore, nanoscience develops new ideas that lead to a better understanding of nanoparticles and their mechanisms of action in plants. Plants can grow and develop more effectively when the physiological-biochemical and molecular pathways involving nanoparticles in plants are understood. Scientists have developed a broad range of nanoparticles (NPs) such as Au, Ag, Pt, Fe, Cu, Cd, ZnO, and TiO 2 . At the same time, nanoscience gives us new ideas and diverts our intentions to attain some suitable mechanism mode for the functions of NPs in plants. The proper functionality of the physical, biological, and cellular mechanisms of NPs requires selected plant species to influence the variation in the different phases of plant growth and development. Although several reviews on engineered nanoparticles have been published in recent years, few have focused on their current applications, transport, interaction, and physio-chemical aspects of metal-based nanoparticles (MBNPs) and carbon-based nanoparticles (CBNPs) with crops. As a result, we evaluated the behaviors of (MBNPs) and (CBNPs) in agricultural systems, including absorption and translocation of MBNPs and CBNPs in crop plants, physiological and biochemical effects of MBNPs on plants, and factors influencing MBNPs and CBNPs' interactions on plants. This review will help glow nanotechnology by promoting scientific study on MBNPs and metal oxides nanoparticles MONPs and understanding the risks and advantages of their association with plants.

Abstract:A large number of metallic nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by using different plant extracts and microbes including bacteria, fungi viruses and microalgae. Some of these metallic nanoparticles showed strong antimicrobial activities against phytopathogens. Here, we summarized these green-synthesized nanoparticles from plants and microbes and their applications in the control of plant pathogens. We also discussed the potential deleterious effects of the metallic nanoparticles on plants and beneficial microbial communities associated with plants. Overall, this review calls for attention regarding the use of green-synthesized metallic nanoparticles in controlling plant diseases and clarification of the risks to plants, plant-associated microbial communities, and environments before using them in agriculture.

Abstract:The excessive arsenic (As) accumulation in plant tissues enforced toxic impacts on growth indices. So, the utilization of As-contaminated food leads to risks associated with human health. For the reduction of As concentrations in foods, it is obligatory to fully apprehend the take up, accretion, transportation and toxicity mechanisms of As within plant parts. This metalloid impairs the plant functions by disturbing the metabolic pathways at physio-biochemical, cellular and molecular levels. Though several approaches were utilized to reduce the As-accumulation and toxicity in soil-plant systems. Recently, engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) such a zinc oxide (ZnO), silicon dioxide or silica (SiO2), iron oxide (FeO) and copper oxide (CuO) have emerged new technology to reduce the As-accumulation or phytotoxicity. But, the mechanistic approaches with systematic explanation are missing. By knowing these facts, our prime focus was to disclose the mechanisms behind the As toxicity and its mitigation by ENPs in higher plants. ENPs relives As toxicity and its oxidative damages by regulating the transporter or defense genes, modifying the cell wall composition, stimulating the antioxidants defense, phytochelatins biosynthesis, nutrients uptake, regulating the metabolic processes, growth improvement, and thus reduction in As-accumulation or toxicity. Yet, As-detoxification by ENPs depends upon the type and dose of ENPs or As, exposure method, plant species and experimental conditions. We have discussed the recent advances and highlight the knowledge or research gaps in earlier studies along with recommendations. This review may help scientific community to develop strategies such as applications of nano-based fertilizers to limit the As-accumulation and toxicity, thus healthy food production. These outcomes may govern sustainable application of ENPs in agriculture.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) are among the most dangerous environmental variables for a variety of life forms, including crops. Accumulation of HMs in consumables and their subsequent transmission to the food web are serious concerns for scientific communities and policy makers. The function of essential plant cellular macromolecules is substantially hampered by HMs, which eventually have a detrimental effect on agricultural yield. Among these HMs, three were considered, i.e., arsenic, cadmium, and chromium, in this review, from agro-ecosystem perspective. Compared with conventional plant growth regulators, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) is a relatively recent, successful, and promising method among the many methods employed to address or alleviate the toxicity of HMs. The ability of NPs to reduce HM mobility in soil, reduce HM availability, enhance the ability of the apoplastic barrier to prevent HM translocation inside the plant, strengthen the plant's antioxidant system by significantly enhancing the activities of many enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, and increase the generation of specialized metabolites together support the effectiveness of NPs as stress relievers. In this review article, to assess the efficacy of various NP types in ameliorating HM toxicity in plants, we adopted a 'fusion approach', in which a machine learning-based analysis was used to systematically highlight current research trends based on which an extensive literature survey is planned. A holistic assessment of HMs and NMs was subsequently carried out to highlight the future course of action(s).

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) toxicity is a serious concern across the globe owing to their harmful impacts on plants, animals, and humans. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have gained appreciable attention in mitigating the adverse effects of abiotic stresses. The exogenous application of ZnO-NPs induces tolerance against HMs by improving plant physiological, metabolic, and molecular responses. They also interact with potential osmolytes and phyto-hormones to regulate the plant performance under HM stress. Moreover, ZnO-NPs also work synergistically with microbes and gene expression which helps to withstand HM toxicity. Additionally, ZnO-NPs also restrict the uptake and accumulation of HMs in plants which improves the plant performance. This review highlights the promising role of ZnO-NPs in mitigating the adverse impacts of HMs in plants. In this review, we explained the different mechanisms mediated by ZnO-NPs to counter the toxic effects of HMs. We also discussed the interactions of ZnO-NPs with osmolytes, phytohormones, and microbes in mitigating the toxic effects of HMs in plants. This review will help to learn more about the role of ZnO-NPs to mitigate HM toxicity in plants. Therefore, it will provide new insights to ensure sustainable and safer production with ZnO-NPs in HM-polluted soils.

Plants, in their adaptability, proactively engage in a multitude of intricate processes to counteract the impacts of HM toxicity. These processes orchestrate profound transformations at biomolecular levels, showing the plant's ability to adapt and thrive in adversity. In the past few decades, HM stress tolerance in crops has been successfully addressed through a combination of traditional breeding techniques, cutting-edge genetic engineering methods, and the strategic implementation of marker-dependent breeding approaches. Given the remarkable progress achieved in this domain, it has become imperative to adopt integrated methods that mitigate potential risks and impacts arising from environmental contamination on yields, which is crucial as we endeavor to forge ahead with the establishment of enduring agricultural systems. In this manner, nanotechnology has emerged as a viable field in agricultural sciences. The potential applications are extensive, encompassing the regulation of environmental stressors like toxic metals, improving the efficiency of nutrient consumption and alleviating climate change effects. Integrating nanotechnology and nanomaterials in agrochemicals has successfully mitigated the drawbacks associated with traditional agrochemicals, including challenges like organic solvent pollution, susceptibility to photolysis, and restricted bioavailability. Numerous studies clearly show the immense potential of nanomaterials and nanofertilizers in tackling the acute crisis of HM toxicity in crop production. This review seeks to delve into using NPs as agrochemicals to effectively mitigate HM toxicity and enhance crop resilience, thereby fostering an environmentally friendly and economically viable approach toward sustainable agricultural advancement in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:In recent decades, environmental pollution with chromium (Cr) has gained significant attention. Although chromium (Cr) can exist in a variety of different oxidation states and is a polyvalent element, only trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] are found frequently in the natural environment. In the current review, we summarize the biogeochemical procedures that regulate Cr(VI) mobilization, accumulation, bioavailability, toxicity in soils, and probable risks to ecosystem are also highlighted. Plants growing in Cr(VI)-contaminated soils show reduced growth and development with lower agricultural production and quality. Furthermore, Cr(VI) exposure causes oxidative stress due to the production of free radicals which modifies plant morpho-physiological and biochemical processes at tissue and cellular levels. However, plants may develop extensive cellular and physiological defensive mechanisms in response to Cr(VI) toxicity to ensure their survival. To cope with Cr(VI) toxicity, plants either avoid absorbing Cr(VI) from the soil or turn on the detoxifying mechanism, which involves producing antioxidants (both enzymatic and non-enzymatic) for scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, this review also highlights recent knowledge of remediation approaches i.e., bioremediation/phytoremediation, or remediation by using microbes exogenous use of organic amendments (biochar, manure, and compost), and nano-remediation supplements, which significantly remediate Cr(VI)-contaminated soil/water and lessen possible health and environmental challenges. Future research needs and knowledge gaps are also covered. The review's observations should aid in the development of creative and useful methods for limiting Cr(VI) bioavailability, toxicity and sustainably managing Cr(VI)-polluted soils/water, by clear understanding of mechanistic basis of Cr(VI) toxicity, signaling pathways, and tolerance mechanisms; hence reducing its hazards to the environment.

Deep Learning from EEG Reports for Inferring Underspecified Information

Abstract:Secondary use1of electronic health records (EHRs) often relies on the ability to automatically identify and extract information from EHRs. Unfortunately, EHRs are known to suffer from a variety of idiosyncrasies – most prevalently, they have been shown to often omit or underspecify information. Adapting traditional machine learning methods for inferring underspecified information relies on manually specifying features characterizing the specific information to recover (e.g. particular findings, test results, or physician’s impressions). By contrast, in this paper, we present a method for jointly (1) automatically extracting word- and report-level features and (2) inferring underspecified information from EHRs. Our approach accomplishes these two tasks jointly by combining recent advances in deep neural learning with access to textual data in electroencephalogram (EEG) reports. We evaluate the performance of our model on the problem of inferring the neurologist’s over-all impression (normal or abnormal) from electroencephalogram (EEG) reports and report an accuracy of 91.4% precision of 94.4% recall of 91.2% and F1 measure of 92.8% (a 40% improvement over the performance obtained using Doc2Vec). These promising results demonstrate the power of our approach, while error analysis reveals remaining obstacles as well as areas for future improvement.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) concentration has been increasing substantially in the environment due to industrial and anthropogenic factors. Plants can absorb Cr and undergo unrestrained oxidation cascades, resulting in cell injury. The ameliorative role of biogenic copper nanoparticles to relieve wheat plants from Cr stress by supporting their growth is still unclear. The present work aims at the biosynthesis and characterization of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) from a native Klebsiella pneumoniae strain, followed by assessment of wheat growth and physiological responses to CuNPs mixed in Cr-rich soil. The taxonomic rank of K. pneumoniae SN35 was established by the 16 S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The properties of biogenic CuNPs were elucidated by using UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM. It was found that 19.01-47.47 nm spherical shaped CuNPs were stabilized by different functional groups produced extracellularly by the strain SN35. The XRD data revealed the crystalline nature of CuNPs as a face-centered cubic structure. Different concentrations of CuNPs (0, 25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1) of soil) were added into the soil mixed with 3.5 mg kg(-1) K2Cr2O7 and the pots were placed in a growth chamber for 30 days. The results revealed that the CuNPs, at 25 and 50 mg kg(-1) of soil, augmented plant growth, biomass, and cellular antioxidants contents, whereas decreased the reactive oxygen species and Cr translocation from soil to roots and shoots as compared to control plants. Overall, the results revealed that the soil amendment of CuNPs could immobilize the Cr in the soil to prevent its translocation to the upper plant parts and support wheat growth by relieving cellular oxidative stress.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) is a venomous heavy metal and environmental concern which threatened the global food safety due to its carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on biological systems. Some researchers have investigated the ameliorative role of ZnO-NPs to manage heavy metal toxicity in agricultural systems; however, their protective role has never been explored. Therefore, the present research was performed to explore the protective role of ZnO-NPs application under severe Cr toxicity in soybean seedlings. Soybean seedlings were supplemented with 100 µM Cr stress which caused deleterious effects on seed germination, plant growth, biomass, photosynthetic rate, disturbed PSII system, total soluble sugar, total soluble protein, nutrient acquisition by increasing the lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage. Moreover, Cr stress also negatively affected the enzymatic antioxidative activities (SOD, POD, and CAT), and non-enzymatic activities (GR, GSH, GSSH) activities in soybean seedlings due to increased metal accumulation. However, foliar spray of ZnO-NPs mitigated Cr stress by reducing root and shoot Cr uptake as well as plant concentration of oxidative stress markers (MDA and H2O2). Moreover, a higher biomass, altered enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activities and increased nutrient uptake was observed in ZnO-NPs treated plants. This protective role might be due to the competitive superiority of ZnO-NPs over Cr to use similar in-planta transport channels. Our results revealed that the application of ZnO-NPs can alleviate Cr toxicity in soybean and offers a sustainable solution of crop growth in Cr-contaminated agricultural soils.
A Review of the Influence of Nanoparticles on the Physiological and Biochemical Attributes of Plants with a Focus on the Absorption and Translocation of Toxic Trace Elements.

Abstract:Trace elements (TEs) from various natural and anthropogenic activities contaminate the agricultural water and soil environments. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) as nano-fertilizers or nano-pesticides is gaining popularity worldwide. The NPs-mediated fertilizers encourage the balanced availability of essential nutrients to plants compared to traditional fertilizers, especially in the presence of excessive amounts of TEs. Moreover, NPs could reduce and/or restrict the bioavailability of TEs to plants due to their high sorption ability. In this review, we summarize the potential influence of NPs on plant physiological attributes, mineral absorption, and TEs sorption, accumulation, and translocation. It also unveils the NPs-mediated TE scavenging-mechanisms at plant and soil interface. NPs immobilized TEs in soil solution effectively by altering the speciation of TEs and modifying the physiological, biochemical, and biological properties of soil. In plants, NPs inhibit the transfer of TEs from roots to shoots by inducing structural modifications, altering gene transcription, and strengthening antioxidant defense mechanisms. On the other hand, the mechanisms underpinning NPs-mediated TEs absorption and cytotoxicity mitigation differ depending on the NPs type, distribution strategy, duration of NP exposure, and plants (e.g., types, varieties, and growth rate). The review highlights that NPs may bring new possibilities for resolving the issue of TE cytotoxicity in crops, which may also assist in reducing the threats to the human dietary system. Although the potential ability of NPs in decontaminating soils is just beginning to be understood, further research is needed to uncover the sub-cellular-based mechanisms of NPs-induced TE scavenging in soils and absorption in plants.
