Abstract:A novel ceramic nanofiber membrane (CNM), without an intermediate layer, was successfully developed onto the surface of a mullite fiber-based porous ceramic support using a sacrificial layer-assisted multiple dip-coating method. The CNM based on attapulgite exhibited a remarkable permeability of 1602.6L/(m2·h·bar), over 24 times higher than the ceramic nanofiber membrane with a support made from alumina granular particles. Moreover, a catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (Mn@CNM) was fabricated via an impregnation method. The Mn@CNM coupled catalytic ozonation process achieved a removal efficiency of up to 90.3% for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to evaluate the production of different reactive oxygen species during the catalytic ozonation of SMX. The superior performance of Mn@CNM was ascribed to the high porosity and specific surface area of the CNM support, as well as the presence of a separation layer composed of interwoven APT nanofibers. These components created nano-sized pore structures, that enhanced the nano-confinement effect and improved the interaction between ROS and SMX molecules. In addition, the excellent redox cycles of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) facilitated the generation of ROS and degradation of SMX in catalytic ozonation systems. This study presents a novel method for creating CNM with excellent permeability and Mn@CNM with superior catalytic performance, enabling efficient removal of emerging contaminants from water.

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes (Mn@CNMs) were prepared by anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of attapulgite (APT) nanofibers via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. An integrated catalytic ozonation/membrane filtration process applying Mn@CNM was employed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal achieved up to 81.3% during a 7-h continuous filtration. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and radical detection experiments were conducted to determine the contribution of O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot and O(2)(center dot- )towards the catalytic degradation of SMX. Moreover, Mn@CNM exhibited wide applicability for real water matrix and the total removal of various kinds of emerging contaminants in real hospital wastewater reached up to 98.5%. The excellent performances of Mn@CNM were attributed to the nano-confinement effect in the membrane layer. First, anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of the APT surface suppressed the growth and aggregation of nanosized Mn2O3, providing abundant reactive sites for catalytic ozonation. Second, the interlaced APT nanofibers formed nano-sized network structures, where ROS and SMX were confined in close vicinity and ROS have more chances to attack SMX. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of catalytic ceramic membrane with high catalytic efficiency for degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:Membrane-based catalytic ozonation has recently attracted significant attention for its simultaneous boosted contaminant degradation and separation. In this work, catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes ((MnFe0.05) @CNM) with MnFe dual-active site are prepared by anchoring FeOx nanoparticles onto Mn@CNM via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. The (MnFe0.05)@CNM coupled with catalytic ozonation was applied to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), achieving a removal rate of up to 99.2 %. The catalytic degradation of SMX is verified by reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and EPR detection experiments, which shows that the 1O2, & sdot;OH and O2 & sdot;- are involved. Furthermore, (MnFe0.05)@CNM demonstrates superior catalytic stability, redox properties, and an abundance of acidic sites, as are revealed by H2-TPR and NH3-TPD analysis. The boosted performance is attributed to the synergistic catalysis by Mn and Fe bimetals under nanoconfinement effect of membrane pores through facilitated electron transfer between Mn2+, Mn3+, Mn4+, Fe2+, and Fe3+, and promoting the decomposition of ozone and the generation of ROS. The nano-confinement effect of (MnFe0.05)@CNM also reduces the mass transfer distance between ROS and SMX, promoting ROS to attack the SMX molecules. This study presents a novel approach to developing catalytic ceramic membranes for the enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:Membrane fouling and low removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) are the main obstacles for the wide application of ultrafiltration membrane technology in water treatment. Herein, we reported the preparation and application of a novel ceramic membrane, which embedded the cobalt oxide in the membrane support layer, and simultaneously loaded the CoAl composite bimetallic oxide on membrane surface layer. The double catalytic layer membrane () enabled more efficient DOM removal and membrane fouling mitigation via in situ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation during filtration of actual raw water. Compared to the ceramic membrane with only single catalytic layer, the /PMS system could achieve much higher normalized membrane flux (0.79 vs. 0.63 and 0.49) and TOC removal (87.47 % vs. 58.35 % and 47.16 %); meanwhile, the molecular weight of DOM in the permeate water would also be significantly decreased. The FT-ICR MS results indicated that the total amount of DOM molecules of the permeate was reduced; the DOM with high H/C wa and low O/C wa value could be more easily removed, accompanied with the production of DOM with higher oxidation and unsaturation degree. Singlet oxygen and surface-bound radicals were proved to play a critical role in mitigating the membrane fouling by DOM. The design of ceramic membrane equipped with double catalytic layer and its application in advanced water purification were systematically elucidated for the first time in this work, which provided a new pathway for efficient treatment of surface water containing DOM.

Abstract:Overcoming the challenges associated with achieving high uniformity and connectivity of pore channels in ceramic membranes, we designed silicon carbide ceramic membrane derived from the recrystallization process based on the Dinger-Funk equation of the closest-packing model with various grain grading. Furthermore, the effects of particle size distribution on the resulting microstructure and pore architecture of the ceramic membrane was also explored. The findings corroborated the critical importance of raw material particle size distribution in controlling pore size distribution and morphology. After sintering at 1900 o C, the silicon carbide ceramic membrane, benefiting from ideal particle packing, exhibited a remarkably uniform pore structure. Notably, the most probable pore size constituted over 70%, while achieving an open porosity of 51.3% even without the addition of pore-forming agents. The silicon carbide ceramic membrane also demonstrated exceptional hydrophilicity (water contact angle:∼0 o ), impressive water permeation (1210 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 ), coupled with efficient turbidity removal (∼100%) in carbon black wastewater treatment applications. Additionally, membrane regeneration proved effective using a dilute NaOH solution backwash, achieving a flux recovery efficiency of 98%. This strategy had directive significance for designing high-performing silicon carbide ceramic membranes.

Abstract:Membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and membrane filtration can efficiently and rapidly remove organic pollutants. Herein, cobalt-ferrite-doped graphitic carbon nitride (CoFe2O4@g-C3N4) nanoconfined catalytic membranes were fabricated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient water purification with the rapid degradation of pollutants. The catalytic membrane was highly efficient in degradation of various pollutants including pharmaceuticals, dye and phenol and achieved a 100% removal efficiency of the model pollutant ranitidine (5 mg/L) within a retention time of 54.6 ms. The CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system achieved a degradation first-order rate constant of 0.088 ms-1 (5280 min-1), which is 104106 times higher than traditional AOP systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and quenching experiments indicated that hydroxyl and singlet oxygen species were the main contributors to pollutant degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that charge was transferred from g-C3N4 (0.247 e) to CoFe2O4 and then from CoFe2O4 (1.611 e) to PMS (-1.858 e) in the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4/PMS system with its free energy of -5.64 eV, which indicated that the PMS dissociation on the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 heterojunction was spontaneous. The ≡Fe(II)/≡Co(III) redox cycle and the promotion of heterojunction on electron transfer induced high stability (42 h) and efficient catalytic capacity for the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system. The as-obtained CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane expands a new pathway for membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis and also provides a promising scheme for water treatment.

Abstract:The development of a low-cost and environmentally-friendly procedure for the fabrication of silicon carbide (SiC) membranes while achieving good membrane performance is an important goal, but still a big challenge. To address this challenge, herein, a colloidal coating suspension of sub-micron SiC powders was prepared in aqueous media by employing aluminum nitrate nonahydrate as a sintering additive and was used for the deposition of a novel SiC membrane layer onto a SiC tubular support by dip-coating. The sintering temperature influence on the structural morphology was studied. Adding aluminum nitrate nonahydrate reduced the sintering temperature of the as-prepared membrane compared to conventional SiC membrane synthesis. Surface morphology, pore size distribution, crystalline structure, and chemical and mechanical stability of the membrane were characterized. The membrane showed excellent corrosion resistance in acidic and basic medium for 30 days with no significant changes in membrane properties. The pure water permeance of the membrane was measured as 2252 L h−1 m−2 bar−1. Lastly, the final membrane with 0.35 μm mean pore size showed high removal of oil droplets (99.7%) in emulsified oil-in-water with outstanding permeability. Hence, the new SiC membrane is promising for several industrial applications in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Versatile two-dimensional nanomaterials have offered a promising prospect to enhance the water purification efficiency and overcome the fouling obstacle in membrane technology. In this work, a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheet membrane intercalated with the nano-sized Fe-based metal-organic framework (MIL-100(Fe)) is developed for the enhanced removal of aqueous organic contaminants by synergically promoting separation and Fenton-like processes. The g-C3N4/MIL-100(Fe) membrane is constructed through a self-assembly route in which the nano-MIL-100(Fe) is anchored into g-C3N4 layers by the coordination bonds between Fe nodes and pyridinic N. The MIL-100(Fe) intercalation not only enlarges the interlayer spacing to raise the membrane permeability, but also expedites the electron transfer between Fe2+ and Fe3+ to improve the Fenton-like activity. With a stable water flux of 98.2 L m2·h-1·bar-1 under wide-range pH and pressures, the g-C3N4/MIL-100(Fe) membrane shows high dye removal efficiency (≥99%) and prominent self-cleaning ability. Mechanism insight proposes a combination of size exclusion, electrostatic interaction and steady radical generation. The intercalation of nano-MIL-100(Fe) into g-C3N4 membranes can realize the mutual promotion between separation and Fenton-like processes, the synergistic effect of which provides an effective and feasible strategy for aqueous pollution abatement.

Abstract:Inorganic surface modification was carried out using a TiO2/SiO2 sol–gel process to enhance photocatalytic activity and to mitigate fouling of alumina microfiltration membranes. Pristine alumina membranes were subjected to TiO2/SiO2 coating with varied TiO2 mole percentages. Upon the formation of the TiO2/SiO2 layer, small changes in the surface morphology, pore size, and specific surface area were detected. Particularly, as the pore size decreased with the decrease in TiO2 content, the pure water permeability also gradually diminished. By examining the binary TiO2/SiO2 compositions, the optimized conditions demonstrating both higher flux performance and greater photocatalytic activity were determined. Thus, the inorganic surface modification by TiO2/SiO2 coating could contribute significantly to the realization of self-cleaning ceramic membranes while extending the membrane cleaning cycle and accelerating productivity.

Abstract:Membrane technologies have broad applications in the removal of contaminants from drinking water and wastewater. In recent decades, ceramic membrane has made rapid progress in industrial/municipal wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment owing to their advantageous properties over conventional polymeric membrane. The beneficial characteristics of ceramic membranes include fouling resistance, high permeability, good recoverability, chemical stability, and long life time, which have found applications with the recent innovations in both fabrication methods and nanotechnology. Therefore, ceramic membranes hold great promise for potential applications in water treatment. This paper mainly reviews the progress in the research and development of ceramic membranes, with key focus on porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial-functionalized ceramic membranes for nanofiltration or catalysis. The current state of the available ceramic membranes in industry and academia, and their potential advantages, limitations and applications are reviewed. The last section of the review focuses on ceramic membrane fouling and the efforts towards ceramic membrane fouling mitigation. The advances in ceramic membrane technologies have rarely been widely reviewed before, therefore, this review could be served as a guide for the new entrants to the field, as well to the established researchers.
High-flux robust ceramic membranes functionally decorated with nano-catalyst for emerging micro-pollutant removal from water

Abstract:Highly efficient water treatment is an important challenging issue for membrane separation where high flux, high removal rate, low fouling under low or even zero energy consumption are highly emphasized. In the present work, high-flux hierarchically structured ceramic membranes functionally decorated with active CoFe2O4 nano-catalyst was rationally designed and applied in highly efficient removal of emerging organic micro-pollutants from water. Coupling with sulfate radicals-advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), such composite membranes could be operated with highly stable flux without any extra energy consumption, only under the gravity of the feeds, which is much more energy-efficient than traditional counterparts. After detailed structure characterizations, the performance such as flux, removal rate and stability were fully assessed. High flux can be attributed to the specially designed membrane structure with long finger-like macroporous layers featuring rapid transport, significantly outperforming other reported state-of-the-art separation membranes. High removal rate can be ascribed to a sponge-like layer loaded with nano-catalysts as micro-reactors for sufficient degradation of organic micro-pollutants. Mechanism analysis indicates that <math>SO4•−</math> is a dominant active radical responsible for catalytic degradation while physical adsorption played a minor effect. This technology is expected to be of potential for application in remote areas where power energy is absent, or simply used as a point-of-use technology in decentralized water treatment.

Abstract:Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic membrane (Co 1 -NCNT-CM) in conjunction with an activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, achieving excellent EOCs degradation and anti-fouling performance. An interfacial reaction mechanism effectively mitigates membrane fouling through a repulsive interaction with natural organic matter. The generation of singlet oxygen at the Co-N 3 -C active sites through a catalytic pathway (PMS→PMS*→OH*→O*→OO*→ 1 O 2 ) exhibits selective oxidation of phenols and sulfonamides, achieving >90% removal rates. Our findings elucidate a multi-layered functional architecture within the Co 1 -NCNT-CM/PMS system, responsible for its superior performance in organic decontamination and membrane maintenance during secondary effluent treatment. It highlights the power of integrating Co 1 -NCNT-CM/PMS systems in advanced wastewater treatment frameworks, specifically for targeted EOCs removal, heralding a new direction for sustainable water management.

Abstract:Membrane contamination not only reduces the efficacy of separation; but also increases the cost due to frequent application of cleaning agents and shortens membrane life. Therefore, we had constructed a new membrane that could be effectively used to solve the pollution problem. In this work, MXene nanosheets with ultra-thin lamellae have been fabricated by chemical etching, followed by the inclusion of oxygen-doped graphite-phase carbon nitride (OCN) photocatalyst with porous structure. The vacuum-assisted device was utilized to synthesize /Polyethersulfone (MX-OCN) photocatalytic composite membrane possessing self-cleaning ability. The thickness, average surface roughness and the embedding structure of the MX-OCN composite membranes were found to change significantly, leading to the permeability of the MX-OCN membrane up to 1313 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . The interlayer sieving and photocatalysis provided the MX-OCN membrane a high removal ratio for the contaminants like: Congo red: 98 %, Trolybenzene blue: 96 %, Tetracycline hydrochloride: 83 %. During self-cleaning the composite membrane maintained a removal ratio of 94 % and high for CR after 4 cycles, thus effectively alleviating the problem of membrane pollution. Density function theory calculation (DFT) showed that O atom doping could enhance the charge density and reduce the band gap width, which would be more favorable to the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:SUMMARY The epidemiology of West Nile virus (WNV) in Israel is different from other neighbouring countries in the Middle East where disease burden has been minimal. We analysed a cohort of Ashkenazi Jewish patients with symptomatic WNV infection (n = 39), and WNV-negative controls (n = 61), for nine genetic variants that has been suggested to be associated with susceptibility to WNV. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms were significantly more frequent in WNV-infected than non-infected individuals, rs7280422 (MX1) [odds ratio (OR) 4·05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2·04–8·03, P < 0·001] and rs3213545 (OASL) (OR 1·85, 95% CI 1·03–3·3, P = 0·03). Genetic polymorphism may play a significant role in susceptibility to WNV infection in Ashkenazi Jews

Abstract:Membrane fouling caused by effluent organic matters (EfOM) remains a major challenge in wastewater reclamation. Herein, we report a promising catalytic microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) that features with ∼20 μm thickness of Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide (Mn1.5FeO6.35) active layer coating on the α-Al2O3 membrane base (α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM), which enables fantastic mitigation of irreversible EfOM fouling via in situ Oxone activation. Modeling results indicated that complete and standard pore blocking dominated an initial fouling mechanism on the α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM, followed by a cake mode as the fouling evolution. Critically, the cake fouling layer was effectively removed through a facile on-line cleaning with Oxone aqueous solutions, resulting in rapid flux restoration. The mechanism was dominated by radical cleaning pathways, and hydroxyl radicals (HO·) played a critical role in reducing EfOM fouling over other reactive species (e.g., sulfate radicals (SO4 · –) and singlet oxygen (1O2)). A key feature of as-prepared α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM is the favorable slightly basic pH cleaning conditions (∼pH 10), restricting Fe and Mn leaching and maximizing the membrane-sustained activity and durability. Hence, this study highlights the robust cleaning capability of α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM toward EfOM fouling and proposes a new strategy in developing environmentally friendly catalytic CMs for wastewater reclamation.
Flexible Metal Membrane Integrated Electrified and Catalytic Attributes for Multifunctional Water Purification with Enhanced Scaling Resistance

Abstract:Electrified and ceramic membranes assembled with rigid materials have been greatly appreciated for unique electrical responsiveness and catalytic properties for efficient water purification. However, the intensive van der Waals forces of traditional rigid materials have historically resulted in poor rejection, scaling resistance and mechanical properties to those of standard filters. In response, an innovative fabrication approach has been formulated, entailing induced fit theory inspired activation of inert polyamide (PA) substrates, concomitantly coupled with the in-situ growth of CoOx nanoflowers on the polymer membrane surfaces. This method yielded activated terminal amide groups that enable specific coordination in a manner akin to that of a zymogen activation. The ensuing development of CoOx nanoflowers engendered a notably rugged interface, prompting the emergence of grass-like membrane structures reminiscent of the lotus effect. The integration of CoOx nanoflowers endowed the resultant membrane augmented surface hydrophilicity, elevated rejection efficiency, exceptional conductivity, and degradation potential. These effects synergistically yielded an exceptional water permeability for the fabricated membrane (1.90x10(3) L.m(-2).h(-1)), surpassing that of the CoOx-free control membrane by over twofold, coupled with a separation rate exceeding 99.8 %. Furthermore, interface engineering contributed to an exceptionally high reaction rate constant of the resultant membrane (2.93), surpassing that of the inherent membrane by over 167-fold. Importantly, the self-cleaning prowess, facilitated by CoOx, was evidenced by the recoverability of severely fouled membranes through PMS rinsing and electrical interaction. The mechanisms underlying the membrane's multifaceted antifouling performance were systematically unveiled through the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. By employing the facile and ingenious induced fit theory, this approach ushers forth an extraordinary avenue for water purification and scaling resistance applications, distinctly accentuating the innovative essence of this study.

Abstract:It is desirable to develop ceramic membranes with functional performances for wastewater treatment. This work developed a CuO-modified Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane (CuO/Al 2 O 3 CM) via a sol-gel method. The coated CuO particles provided hydrophobicity and a high zero point of charge for CM, which could accumulate H + ions and form a liquid depletion layer on the membrane surface. When coupled with micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) in a neutral aqueous solution, the modified CM led to MNBs collapse through the accumulation of H + and uneven expansion. This collapse generated high temperature sites that activated the CuO particles, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) through the interaction of CuO and surface OH – . Therefore, the modified CM could remove model pollutants (methylene blue) in a stable and high efficiency (88.91 %) through inducing MNBs collapse. Besides, the tests on the pure water flux, reusability and leaching revealed the modified CM had good fouling resistance, stability, and environmental friendliness. Mechanism analysis showed the ROSs, mainly hydroxyl radicals (·OH), were responsible for the methylene blue degradation. This work provides valuable insights into the development of functionalized membranes that can induce MNB collapse to enhance pollutant removal in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Membrane distillation (MD) is considered a promising technology for desalination. In the MD process, membrane pores are easily contaminated and wetted, which will degrade the permeate flux and salt rejection of the membrane. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were used as the supports, and an Al2O3 micro-nano structure was constructed on its surface. The surface energy of Al2O3@SiC micro-nano composite membranes was reduced by organosilane grafting modification. The effective deposition of Al2O3 nanoflowers on the membrane surface increased membrane roughness and enhanced the anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties of the membranes. Simultaneously, the presence of nanoflowers also regulated the pore structures and thus decreased the membrane pore size. In addition, the effects of Al2(SO4)3 concentration and sintering temperature on the surface morphology and performance of the membranes were investigated in detail. It was demonstrated that the water contact angle of the resulting membrane was 152.4°, which was higher than that of the pristine membrane (138.8°). In the treatment of saline water containing 35 g/L of NaCl, the permeate flux was about 11.1 kg×m−2×h−1 and the salt rejection was above 99.9%. Note that the pristine ceramic membrane cannot be employed for MD due to its larger membrane pore size. This work provides a new method for preparing superhydrophobic ceramic membranes for MD.

Abstract:Constructing catalytic membrane simultaneously displaying high permeability, selectivity and antifouling performance in water treatment remains challenging. Herein, the surface and pore channels of the ceramic membrane were co-functionalized with nitrogen doped carbon supported Fe catalyst (CN-F), and the Fe content was varied to investigate its effect on performance of CN-F coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation (CN-F/PMS) for water treatment. Results confirmed the introduced Fe (in Fe-N coordination form) greatly enhanced the permeability, selectivity and fouling resistance of CN-F. Optimal CN-F3/PMS achieved 96.5% removal and 52.1% mineralization of sulfamethoxazole in short retention duration (2.7 min), whose performance was 5.4 and 6.7 times higher than that of nitrogen doped carbon functionalized ceramic catalytic membrane (CN/PMS) and CN-F3 filtration alone, respectively. CN-F3/PMS also efficiently inhibited fouling on both surface and pores with 2.8 and 2.4 times lower flux loss than that of CN/PMS and CN-F3 filtration alone, respectively. Moreover, CN-F3/PMS displayed superior performance in long-term treatment of real coking wastewater. The outstanding performance of CN-F was mainly attributed to the dual role of supported Fe, which served as hydrophilic site for enhanced water permeation and major active site for PMS adsorption and reduction into reactive species (mainly high-valent Fe(IV)=O species) towards pollutant elimination.
