Abstract:Copper and zinc are often used as feed additives and frequently detected in swine wastewater. Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) plays an important role in high-rate anaerobic methanation biotechnologies which are widely applied to treat swine wastewater. The removal of Cu2+ and Zn2+ by AnGS was investigated in the batch and continuous systems. The results of batch experiments showed the adsorption by AnGS could be a significant method for Cu2+ and Zn2+ removal with efficiencies of 99 % and 49 % respectively. The sulfide precipitation mediated by AnGS could be another significant pathway for Zn2+ removal with efficiency of 18-27 % in Protein/M2+ experiments and 16-46 % in SO42+/M2+ experiments (M2+ represents the total concentration of Cu2+ and Zn2+. The results of continuous experiment showed, with SO42+/M2+ larger than 1.5, the influent Cu2+ and Zn2+ could be effectively removed in an anaerobic methanation bioreactor and its effluent Cu2+ and Zn(2+)concentrations were below 1 mg/L and 2 mg/L separately. The main removal mechanism of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in the anaerobic methanation system was that the biological production of sulfide from sulfate was followed by chemical precipitation and reduction. It is helpful for the removal of Cu2+ and Zn2+ with organic pollutants simultaneously to eliminate environmental risk of swine wastewater.
Biosorption and biotransformation behaviours of veterinary antibiotics under aerobic livestock wastewater treatment processes

Abstract:To study the fate of veterinary antibiotics released from swine wastewater treatment plants (SWTP), 10 antibiotics were investigated in each unit of a local SWTP periodically. Over a 14-month period of field investigation into target antibiotics, it was confirmed that tetracycline, chlortetracycline, sulfathiazole, and lincomycin were used in this SWTP, with their presence observed in raw manure. Most of these antibiotics could be effectively treated by aerobic activated sludge, except for lincomycin, which was still detected in the effluent, with a maximum concentration of 1506 μg/L. In addition, the potential for removing antibiotics was evaluated using lab-scale aerobic sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) that were dosed with high concentrations of antibiotics. The SBR results, however, showed that both sulfonamides and macrolides, as well as lincomycin, can achieve 100% removal in lab-scale aerobic SBRs within 7 days. This reveals that the potential removal of those antibiotics in field aeration tanks can be facilitated by providing suitable conditions, such as adequate dissolved oxygen, pH, and retention time. Furthermore, the biosorption of target antibiotics was also confirmed in the abiotic sorption batch tests. Biotransformation and hydrolysis were identified as the dominant mechanism for removing negatively charged sulfonamides and positively charged antibiotics (macrolides and lincomycin) in SBRs. This is due to their relatively low sorption affinity (resulting in negligible to 20% removal) onto activated sludge in abiotic sorption tests. On the other hand, tetracyclines exhibited significant sorption behavior both onto activated sludge and onto soluble organic matters in swine wastewater supernatant, accounting for 70%-91% and 21%-94% of removal within 24 h, respectively. S-shape sorption isotherms with saturation were observed when high amounts of tetracyclines were spiked into sludge, with equilibrium concentrations ranging from 0.4 to 65 mg/L. Therefore, the sorption of tetracyclines onto activated sludge was governed by electrostatic interaction rather than hydrophobic partition. This resulted in a saturated sorption capacity (Qmax) of 17,263 mg/g, 1637 mg/g, and 641.7 mg/g for OTC, TC, and CTC, respectively.
Insights into the microbiological mechanism of antibiotic removal in an aerobic-microaerobic process treating manure-free piggery wastewater

Abstract:A process integrating the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and up-flow microaerobic sludge reactor (UMSR) has been innovatively developed to effectively remove antibiotics from manure-free piggery wastewater. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of bacteria, genes, and enzymes crucial for antibiotic biodegradation to reveal the underlying microbiological mechanism of antibiotic removal. During the 230-day operational period, a significant succession of microbial communities was observed in the SBR-UMSR system. Intriguingly, microbial interactions were pivotal in dominating the community succession, accounting for a substantial contribution of 69.12%, while abiotic factors only accounted for 30.88%. The analysis of the microbial community and network revealed that the predominant mechanism for antibiotic biodegradation in the SBR-UMSR system was driven by the metabolic activities of heterotrophic bacteria. More denitrifying bacteria were involved in antibiotic biodegradation than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. In SBR, most of the potential antibiotic-degrading bacteria (PADB) were Gram-positive and facultatively anaerobic, whereas in UMSR, they were Gram-negative and aerobic. Propioniciclava and Norank_f__AKYH767 were the dominant PADB in the SBR and UMSR, respectively. Network analysis pinpointed redox reactions, transfer processes, and hydrolysis reactions as the core processes facilitating antibiotic biodegradation. Despite a general decrease in the abundance of most antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the activated sludge of both SBR and UMSR over the 230-day operation, there was a notable enrichment in multidrug resistance genes. This underlines the necessity for proper sludge management to prevent secondary contamination by ARGs. This research provides deep insights into the mechanisms of antibiotic removal in intricate microbial ecosystems.

Abstract:Antibiotics are often used excessively in the livestock industry, and the effluent from livestock wastewater treatment is one of the main sources of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Biological treatments and traditional disinfection cannot effectively remove ARGs from this wastewater. This study evaluated the feasibility of removing ARGs from actual swine wastewater treatment effluent using single and sequential electrocoagulation (EC) and electro-Fenton (EF) processes. An EC process with 60 min of electrolysis removed the selected intracellular ARGs with a removal efficiency of 2.21-2.83 logs and the extracellular ARGs with a removal efficiency of 1.82-2.56 logs. In comparison, the EF process was less efficient for the removal of intracellular ARGs (1.03-2.19 logs), but more efficient for the removal of extracellular ARGs (3.19-4.02 logs). Compared to the individual EC and EF processes alone, the sequential EC/EF processes were more effective for the removal of both intracellular and extracellular ARGs, with 2.49-3.25 logs and 3.23-4.38 logs of removal efficiency, respectively. Our results show that the sequential EC/EF treatment might be a promising technology for removing both intracellular and extracellular ARGs from swine wastewater.
Performance of a Recirculated Biogas-Sparging Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor System for Treating Synthetic Swine Wastewater Containing Sulfadiazine Antibiotic

Abstract:Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) is an efficient system for treating synthetic swine wastewater (SW). However, the presence of antibiotics in SW discourages the activity of microorganisms, resulting in less pollutants removal and biogas production. In this paper, a recirculated biogas-sparging anaerobic membrane bioreactor system was used to treat swine wastewater containing sulfadiazine (SDZ). The effects of different concentrations of SDZ on the AnMBR system's performance were explored, in terms of pollutant removal, biogas production, membrane fouling and microbial community. Results indicated that the larger concentration of SDZ triggered a strong suppression in the system's performance. When treating 1.0 mg/L SDZ, the biogas-sparging AnMBR system achieved about 77 % COD removal and 0.23 L/g CODremoved biogas production, which without SDZ fell to 21 % COD being removed and dropped biogas production by 30 %. As well, the presence of SDZ (1.0 mg L) increased by about half the amount of soluble microbial product (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with lower protein/polysaccharide ratio and reduced sludge particle size by 49 %. Meanwhile, microbial community analysis revealed that the abundance of Firmicutes increased while Chloroflexi diminished. These jointly contributed to a shorter membrane fouling cycle declining from the initial 23 d to 7 d. Furthermore, the shift from acetoclastic methanogens to hydrogenotrophic methanogens resulted in less methane production due to the presence of SDZ, while the hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanobacterium promoted the degradation of SDZ. The work showed AnMBR can effectively treat swine wastewater containing antibiotics and provides basis for practical application.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance residual in piggery wastewater poses serious threat to environment and human health. Biological treatment process is commonly installed to remove nutrient from piggery wastewater and also effective in removing antibiotics to varying degrees. But the specific pathways and mechanisms involved in the removal of antibiotic resistance are not yet well-understood. An integrated anaerobic–aerobic biofilm reactor (IAOBR) has been demonstrated efficient in removing conventional nutrients. It is here shown that the IAOBR effectively removed 79.0% of Sulfonamides, 55.7% of Tetracyclines and 53.6% of Quinones. Antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) were simultaneously inactivated by ~0.5 logs. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were decreased by 0.51 logs and 0.42 logs, respectively. The antibiotics were mainly removed through aerobic compartments of the IAOBR. The mass loss of antibiotics in the reactor was achieved by biodegradation and adsorption, accounting for 52.1% and 47.9%, respectively. An obvious accumulation of ARGs was observed in the activated sludge. The potential host of ARGs was analyzed via microbial community and network. Partial least squares-structural equation model and correlation analysis revealed that the enrichment of ARGs was positively affected by MGEs, followed by bacterial community and ARBs, but the effect of antibiotics on ARGs was negative. Outcomes of this study provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance removal in biological treatment processes.

Abstract:Swine wastewater (SW) contains high levels of traditional pollutants, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), necessitating effective elimination. Two parallel aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactors, R 1 and R 2 , were constructed and optimized for treating SW from two pig farms, identified as SW 1 and SW 2 . R 2 showed higher antibiotic removal efficiency, particularly in the removal of sulfonamides, while fluoroquinolones tended to adsorb onto the sludge. Process optimization by introducing an additional anoxic phase enhanced denitrification and reduced effluent ARG levels, also aiding in the improved removal of fluoroquinolones. The nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) Nitrospira accumulated after the treatment process, reaching 12.8 % in R 1 and 14.1 % in R 2 , respectively. Mantel's test revealed that pH, NH 4 + -N, and Mg significantly affected ARGs and microbial community. Sulfadiazine and sulfamethazine were found to significantly impact ARGs and the microbial communities. This study provides innovative insights into the application of AGS for the treatment of real SW.

Abstract:The behavior and removal of roxithromycin (ROX), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were investigated during the steady state of sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) in semi-continuous mode (37 °C). Sludge was spiked at realistic concentrations (50 μg/L of each antibiotic) and then used to feed the bioreactor for 80 days. Antibiotics were extracted from the substrate and digested sludge samples by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE). Accurate determination of antibiotics was obtained by the standard addition method (SAM) associated with the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The presence of antibiotics at a concentration of 2.5 μg/g TS had no inhibitory effects on methane (CH 4 ) production, total and volatile solids (TS and VS) removal as well as chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. During the steady-state, antibiotics were removed significantly by 50, 100, and 59% respectively for the ROX, OTC, and CTC. Furthermore, ENR removal was not statistically significant and was estimated at 36%. This study highlighted that AD process could partially remove parent compounds, but ROX, CTC, and ENR persisted in the digested sludge. Hence, AD could be considered as a sludge treatment for mitigating, but not suppressing, the release of antibiotics through sludge application.

Abstract:Wastewater from animal farms in China is threatening the quality and security of the local water environment. A traditional sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a reformed SBR integrated with two-step feeding and low-intensity aeration at laboratory scale were investigated in this study for biological removal of nutrients and organic matter from swine wastewater. A low efficiency and poor stability were found under the traditional SBR, and the reduction of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) reached 89.1, 86.0 and 93.9%, respectively. When the wastewater was treated with the reformed SBR under the running cycle of anaerobic/anoxicanaerobic/anoxic process, the reductions in TN, TP, and BOD5 reached a maximum of 94.0, 99.3 and 99.9%, respectively. The curves of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and nutrients over time during operation of the reformed SBR could reflect the activity of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DNPAOs).
Performance and Bacterial Community Dynamics of Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands During the Treatment of Antibiotics-Enriched Swine Wastewater

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the nutrient removal and microbial response during the treatment of antibiotics-enriched swine wastewater by vertical flow constructed wetlands with different water flow directions and substrates. Better NH4-N and TN removal were achieved in down-flow and up-flow treatments, respectively. The concentrations of all the chemical properties including oxytetracycline (OTC), difloxacin (DIF), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), nitrite/nitrate, sulphate and total organic carbon (TOC) in down-flow treatment soils were significantly higher than those in up-flow treatments on day 30, 60 and 90 (p < 0.05). Bacterial alpha-diversity indices in soils were negatively correlated with the concentrations of OTC, DIF, Cu and Zn significantly (p < 0.05). Among experimental factors, substrate type significantly contributed to variation of bacterial communities in waters, while water flow direction and sampling time significantly contributed to those in soils (p < 0.01). Among environmental factors, OTC + DIF, Cu + Zn, nitrate/nitrite and sulphate significantly contributed to variation of bacterial communities in soils (p < 0.05). The taxonomy assignment indicated that antibiotics accumulation in soils promoted the growth of 19 dominant genera, including several antibiotic-resistant or degrading bacteria, which however were generally not dominant in effluents. In addition, although the TN and NH4-N removals were reduced when antibiotic concentrations in soils increased, the available community data cannot strongly support the inhibition effect of antibiotics on nitrogen transformation. Further assessment found that some dominant genera in water samples and those enriched under the stress of antibiotics in soils tended to increase their abundances in the effluents of oyster shell-based CWs. Performance of an Intermittent Aeration Membrane Bioreactor for Removal of Veterinary Antibiotics from Piggery Wastewater

Abstract:The removal performance of 11 veterinary antibiotics in piggery wastewater and their accumulation in the activated sludge were studied in an intermittent aeration membrane bioreactor (IAMBR) at different COD/TN ratios and organic loads. The results showed that both antibiotics and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were efficiently removed at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of no less than five days and COD/TN ratio of 2.1, the removal rate was (79.1 ± 0.7)% for total antibiotics and was (88.4 ± 1.4)% for COD. As HRT was shortened to three days, the removal rate of COD was little changed but the removal rate of total antibiotics was significantly decreased. As COD/TN decreased from 2.1 to 0.7, the removal rate of total antibiotics was little changed, but the COD removal rate was significantly decreased. Antibiotics of tetracycline and quinolone species kept accumulating in the sludge at long SRT, and the accumulation amount was decreased with shorter SRT. The concentration and composition of antibiotic in the sludge were influenced by the raw wastewater.
[Method for Simultaneous Determination of 11 Veterinary Antibiotics in Piggery Wastewater and Sludge and Its Application in Biological Treatment].

Abstract:In order to determine eleven commonly used veterinary antibiotics (including four tetracyclines, two sulfonamides, three quinolones and two macrolides) in piggery wastewater and activated sludge in the Yangtze River Delta region, the conditions of solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry were optimized. The recovery rate and relative standard deviations of the method were confirmed as 73% - 105.2%, 3.1% - 10.2% for piggery wastewater (n = 3) and 57.4% - 104.6%, 1.9% - 10.9% (n = 3) respectively for the activated sludge. Removal of antibiotics was then studied in a membrane bioreactor. The results showed that antibiotics of both tetracycline and sulfonamide species took a large portion in the wastewater, while tetracycline species were the dominant in the sludge. Tetracycline species in the wastewater were removed by 85.2%, mainly through biodegradation (51.9%) and secondly by sludge adsorption (33.2%). By comparison, sulfonamide species was removed by 95.8%, almost all through biodegradation while little by sludge adsorption. Flask tests suggested that the accumulated antibiotics in the sludge give no significant influence on the microbial removal of organics and ammonium.
Elimination of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes from swine wastewater in the vertical flow constructed wetlands

Abstract:This paper investigated the efficiency of two vertical flow constructed wetlands characterized by volcanic (CW1) and zeolite (CW2) respectively, at removing three common antibiotics (ciprofloxacin HCl, oxytetracycline HCl, and sulfamethazine) and tetracycline resistance (tet) genes (tetM, tetO, and tetW) from swine wastewater. The result indicated that the two systems could significantly reduce the wastewater antibiotics content, and elimination rates were in the following sequence: oxytetracycline HCl>ciprofloxacin HCl>sulfamethazine. The zeolite-medium system was superior to that of the volcanic-medium system vis-à-vis removal, perhaps because of the differing pH values and average pore sizes of the respective media. A higher concentration of antibiotics accumulated in the soil than in the media and vegetation, indicating that soil plays the main role in antibiotics removal from wastewater in vertical flow constructed wetlands. The characteristics of the wetland medium may also affect the antibiotic resistance gene removal capability of the system; the total absolute abundances of three tet genes and of 16S rRNA were reduced by 50% in CW1, and by almost one order of magnitude in CW2. However, the relative abundances of target tet genes tended to increase following CW1 treatment.

Abstract:The in-situ advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) enhanced with zero-valent iron powder (ZVI) under mesophilic condition was investigated to remove 5 antibiotics (sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), ofloxacin (OFL), tetracycline (TC), and roxithromycin (ROX)) and 11 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (AAC (6′)-IB-CR, qnrS, ermF, ermT, ermX, sul1, sul2, sul3, tetA, tetB, and tetG) in sewage sludge. The effects of different ZVI dosages, antibiotic concentrations, and solid retention time (SRTs) on the removal were explored. Also, the correlation coefficient of antibiotics and ARGs, microbial community structure, biogas production and methane yield were analyzed. All conducted treatments operated stably, and the modified Gompertz model described the cumulative methane yield well. The antibiotics, with the exception of OFL, were effectively removed in the sewage sludge at a dosage of 1000 mg/L ZVI, SRT 20 d, and an antibiotic concentration of 20 μg/L during AAD. The removal rates of SMZ, SMR, TC, and ROX reached 97.39%, 74.54%, 78.61%, and 56.58%, respectively. AAC (6′)-IB-CR and tetB could be effectively reduced during the in-situ AAD. Through the redundancy analysis, AAC (6′)-IB-CR, ermT, ermX, sul2, tetB, and tetG had strong positive correlations with the antibiotics in the reactor. The principle component analysis revealed that the community structure was similar when the SRT was 10 d and 20 d at the same amount of ZVI and antibiotic concentrations in the sludge. Under the operating parameters of 1000 mg/L ZVI dosage, SRT 20 d, and an antibiotic concentration of 20 μg/L, Erysipelotrichia, Verrucomicrobia, Clostridia, Caldiserica, and Alphaproteobacteria of the class were dominated microorganisms in the anaerobic digestion.

Abstract:The pollution of wastewater with antibiotics and antibiotics resistance genes has attracted public concerns about ecosystem and global health. Swine wastewater can contain high concentrations of antibiotics, especially sulfonamides, even after full-scale wastewater treatment. In this study, mesocosm-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF-CWs) were applied to abate nutrients and antibiotics in swine wastewater containing sulfonamides. VF-CWs performed well in the removal of both nutrients and antibiotics. Sulfonamides did not influence total organic carbon (TOC) and total phosphorus (TP) removal, and even slightly enhanced NH4+-N removal. High removal efficiencies (26.42-84.05%) were achieved for sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfamethazine (SMZ). Together with lab-scale sorption and biodegradation experiments, microbial degradation was found to be the most important removal mechanism for sulfonamides in VF-CWs. Sulfonamides addition increased bacterial alpha-diversity and changed microbial community structure. Moreover, antibiotics promoted antibiotic-resistant or -degrading bacteria. Bacillus, Geobacter and other seven genera were correlated with sulfonamides reduction under either aerobic or anaerobic condition. In summary, VF-CW is a suitable alternative for swine wastewater treatment, and biodegradation plays the key role in sulfonamides abatement. Main findings of the work. This was the first work to combine bacterial community analysis with microcosm experiments to uncover the major removal mechanism of sulfonamides in constructed wetlands.
Antibiotic removal and microbial response mechanism in constructed wetlands treating aquaculture wastewater containing veterinary drugs

Abstract:Aquaculture discharge is an important non-point source for antibiotic contamination, yet antibiotic removal from aquaculture wastewater has not been given the necessary attention. Here, nine constructed wetlands (CWs) with different configurations (i.e., substrate, plants, and hydraulic retention time) were prepared by orthogonal test [L 9 (3 3 )], to treat aquaculture wastewater and specifically to evaluate the removal efficiency and mechanism of antibiotics. Consequently, the highest removal percentages of trimethoprim (89 ± 3%), sulfamethoxazole (61 ± 7%), sulfamonomethoxine (20 ± 8%), sulfamethazine (20 ± 9%), and sulfadiazine (12 ± 13%) were achieved via collocating optimal configuration of CWs. Based on the analysis of both the orthogonal test and correlation, microbial degradation was the major removal pathway of antibiotics, particularly anaerobic processes. Further, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis presented that some specific substrate, plants, and hydraulic retention time might promote antibiotic removal via changing dominant and functional microbes by deciding oxygen concentrations and redox conditions in CWs. In which, anaerobic bacteria (e.g., Lacihabitans and Ilumatobacter ) were regarded as the key microorganisms in the genus level for removing antibiotics by CWs through redundancy analysis (RDA), while aerobic bacteria (e.g., Hydrogenophaga and Pseudomonas ) were likely to significantly inhibit the anaerobic process of antibiotic degradation.

Abstract:Analyzing the temporal dynamics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the functional community could contribute to the regulation and optimization of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation to achieve better antibiotics and ARGs removal performances during different seasons. However, there is little research in this area. Therefore, in this study, samples were collected from the influent, activated sludge (AS), and permeate of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) in a WWTP located in Beijing, China, biweekly over 13 months, and then analyzed systematically. The removal efficiency for all detected antibiotics through biodegradation and adsorption was 59.25 ± 2.79%, with the highest rate of 64.79 ± 4.68% observed in summer, indicating that the higher temperature in summer may promote biodegradation in MBR. In contrast, the elimination of antibiotics through microfiltration was negligible and unfavorable, with negative overall removal rates. However, a positive rejection rate of 9.48 ± 8.92% was only observed in winter, indicating that a colder temperature might lead to better, but still limited, antibiotics rejection. Sulfonamides (SAs) were more likely to impose a selective pressure on their corresponding ARGs. However, due to the degradability of tetracyclines (TCs) and potential selection of ARGs in wastewater before entering WWTP, there were still TC resistances with non-detectable TCs. Significantly negative relationships were observed between the relative abundance of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) and the concentrations of certain antibiotic classes, indicating that nitrifying bacteria could be involved in the co-metabolic biodegradation of certain antibiotics through enzyme catalyzation during nitrification.

Abstract:Anaerobic and aerobic treatment of high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater was evaluated in this study. A batch test was performed to study the biodegradability of the wastewater, and the result indicated that a combination anaerobic-aerobic treatment system was effective in removing organic matter from the high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater. Based on the batch test, a pilot-scale system composed of an anaerobic baffled reactor followed by a biofilm airlift suspension reactor was designed. At a stable operational period, effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the anaerobic baffled reactor ranged from 1,432 to 2,397 mg/L at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1.25 day, and 979 to 1,749 mg/L at an HRT of 2.5 day, respectively, when influent COD ranged from 9,736 to 19,862 mg/L. As a result, effluent COD of the biofilm airlift suspension reactor varied between 256 and 355 mg/L at HRTs of from 5.0 to 12.5 h. The antibiotics ampicillin and aureomycin, with influent concentrations of 3.2 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, could be partially degraded in the anaerobic baffled reactor: ampicillin and aureomycin removal efficiencies were 16.4 and 25.9% with an HRT of 1.25 day, and 42.1 and 31.3% with HRT of 2.5 day, respectively. Although effective in COD removal, the biofilm airlift suspension reactor did not display significant antibiotic removal, and the removal efficiencies of the two antibiotics were less than 10%.
Removal of antibiotics by four microalgae-based systems for swine wastewater treatment under different phytohormone treatment

Abstract:This study examined the removal of typical antibiotics from simulated swine wastewater. Microalgae-bacteria/fungi symbioses were constructed using Chlorella ellipsoidea , endophytic bacteria (S395-2), and Clonostachys rosea as biomaterials. The growth, photosynthetic performance, and removal of three types of antibiotics (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and quinolones) induced by four phytohormones were analyzed in each system. The results showed that all four phytohormones effectively improved the tolerance of symbiotic strains against antibiotic stress; strigolactones (GR24) achieved the best performance. At 10 −9 M, GR24 achieved the best removal of antibiotics by C. elliptica + S395-2 + C. rosea symbiosis. The average removals of tetracycline, sulfonamide, and quinolone by this system reached 96.2–99.4 %, 75.2–81.1 %, and 66.8–69.9 %, respectively. The results of this study help to develop appropriate bio enhancement strategies as well as design and operate algal-bacterial-fungal symbiotic processes for the treatment of antibiotics-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance is recognized as a potent threat to human health. Wastewater treatment facilities are viewed as hotspots for the spread of antimicrobial resistance. This study provides comprehensive data on the occurrences of 3 different antibiotic resistant opportunistic pathogens (with resistance to up to 5 antibiotics), 13 antibiotic resistant genes and intI1, and 22 different antimicrobial residues in a large water reclamation plant (176 million gallons per day) that runs a conventional Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) reactor followed by a secondary settling tank (SST) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) in parallel. All the antibiotic resistant bacteria and most of the antibiotic resistance genes were present in the raw influent, ranging from 2.5 × 102-3.7 × 106 CFU/mL and 1.2× 10-1-6.5 × 1010 GCN/mL, respectively. MBR outperformed the SST system in terms of ARB removal as the ARB targets were largely undetected in MBR effluent, with log removals ranging from 2.7 to 6.8, while SST only had log removals ranging from 0.27 to 4.6. Most of the ARG concentrations were found to have significantly higher in SST effluent than MBR permeate, and MBR had significantly higher removal efficiency for most targets (p < 0.05) except for sul1, sul2, blaOXA48, intI1 and 16S rRNA genes (p > 0.05). As for the antibiotic residues (AR), there was no significant removal from the start to the end of the treatment process, although MBR had higher removal efficiencies for azithromycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, erythromycin-H2O, lincomycin, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan, compared to the SST system. In conclusion, MBR outperformed SST in terms of ARB and ARGs removal. However low removal efficiencies of most AR targets were apparent.
