Abstract:Accurate measurement of respiration and heartbeat is crucial for assessing the normality of cardiopulmonary activity. This study proposes a novel real-time human vital signs detection method using a 77 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave radar. We measure the chest displacement caused by respiration and heart rate in the human body and transmit the collected measurement data to a PC via the UART data port. Subsequently, the data undergo preprocessing. We employ the vector averaging cancellation (VAC) method to remove static clutter and utilize linear interpolation to suppress potential pulse noise. Moreover, we extract the phase information from the signals. During the frequency estimation of the heartbeat signal, we analyze the signal energy to address motion artifacts and mitigate the interference caused by body movement on heart rate estimation. To reduce estimation errors in heart rate, we selectively filter out the respiratory second harmonic component when appropriate, avoiding the strong influence of respiratory signals and their harmonics on heart rate estimation. The determined respiration and heart rate values are then displayed in real-time on the PC. Experimental results demonstrate that this real-time vital sign detection system maintains high detection accuracy while ensuring real-time capability.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) radar technology has potential applications in vital signs detection and medicine. In order to minimize the influence of human micro-movements and respiratory harmonics on heart rate estimation, the vital signs detection method based on mmWave radar is studied in this paper. First, we use median filtering to eliminate baseline drift caused by human micromotion. Next, a differential recursive least squares multiple classification (DR-MUSIC) algorithm is proposed based on the combination of recursive least squares-based adaptive filter (RLS) and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. This algorithm effectively suppresses respiratory harmonics and separates respiratory and heartbeat signals. Finally, heart rate value can be precisely estimated using spectral peak search. We invite a number of people to participate in the experiment, which demonstrate that the method successfully suppresse the impact of respiratory harmonics at low SNR. The error rate between the estimated heart rate and the reference heart rate is only 1.69% to 2.61%, which is significantly better than the existing algorithms.

Abstract:Millimeter Wave(mmWave) radar has been widely used in vital sign monitoring with non-contact and privacy protection. To reduce the effect of random body motion, respiration, and its harmonics on heart rate estimation, the heart rate monitoring based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar is researched in this paper. First, a vital sign signal extraction algorithm is designed for the Range Bin variation caused by random body motion and heavy breathing. Second, a heartbeat signal extraction algorithm is designed based on Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF) and Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT). The harmonic of respiration will be suppressed, and the heartbeat signal will be separated. Finally, the weighted estimation is performed according to the relationship of harmonics of the heartbeat signal to obtain the heart rate. Twenty subjects are invited to the experiment. The experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), reduce the harmonic interference, and estimate the heart rate with a mean absolute error less than 4 BPM.

Abstract:A non-contact heartbeat/respiratory rate monitoring system was designed using narrow beam millimeter wave radar. Equipped with a special low sidelobe and small-sized antenna lens at the front end of the receiving and transmitting antennas in the 120 GHz band of frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) system, this sensor system realizes the narrow beam control of radar, reduces the interference caused by the reflection of other objects in the measurement background, improves the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) of the intermediate frequency signal (IF), and reduces the complexity of the subsequent signal processing. In order to solve the problem that the accuracy of heart rate is easy to be interfered with by respiratory harmonics, an adaptive notch filter was applied to filter respiratory harmonics. Meanwhile, the heart rate obtained by fast Fourier transform (FFT) was modified by using the ratio of adjacent elements, which helped to improve the accuracy of heart rate detection. The experimental results show that when the monitoring system is 1 m away from the human body, the probability of respiratory rate detection error within ±2 times for eight volunteers can reach 90.48%, and the detection accuracy of the heart rate can reach 90.54%. Finally, short-term heart rate measurement was realized by means of improved empirical mode decomposition and fast independent component analysis algorithm.

Abstract:In recent years, non-contact radar detection technology has been able to achieve long-term and long-range detection for the breathing and heartbeat signals. Compared with contact-based detection methods, it brings a more comfortable and a faster experience to the human body, and it has gradually received attention in the field of radar sensing. Therefore, this paper extends the application of millimeter-wave radar to the field of health care. The millimeter-wave radar first transmits the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and collects the echo signals of the human body. Then, the phase information of the intermediate frequency (IF) signals including the breathing and heartbeat signals are extracted, and the Direct Current (DC) offset of the phase information is corrected using the circle center dynamic tracking algorithm. The extended differential and cross-multiply (DACM) is further applied for phase unwrapping. We propose two algorithms, namely the compressive sensing based on orthogonal matching pursuit (CS-OMP) algorithm and rigrsure adaptive soft threshold noise reduction based on discrete wavelet transform (RA-DWT) algorithm, to separate and reconstruct the breathing and heartbeat signals. Then, a frequency-domain fast Fourier transform and a time-domain autocorrelation estimation algorithm are proposed to calculate the respiratory and heartbeat rates. The proposed algorithms are compared with the contact-based detection ones. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms effectively suppress the noise and harmonic interference, and the accuracies of the proposed algorithms for both respiratory rate and heartbeat rate reach about 93%.

Abstract:Vital signs, such as respiration rate (RR) and heart rate (HR), are essential for human health status assessment. The radar could detect RR and HR in a noncontact manner by sensing the repetitive chest wall movement caused by cardiopulmonary activity, which is attractive due to the more comfortable experience and better privacy protection. However, as the chest wall displacement caused by heartbeat is much smaller than that caused by respiration, the weak heartbeat component may be easily overwhelmed by respiration harmonics, noise, and clutter, making it difficult to achieve accurate and reliable HR detection. In order to tackle this challenge, in this article, we design mmRH, a system that can accurately estimate RR as well as HR using a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radar, which consists of four functional modules. In the vital sign signal extraction module, the range bin corresponding to the body part with strong vital signs is determined to extract the vital sign signal, eliminating the clutter interference. The differential enhancement module is proposed to enhance the heartbeat component by the first-order temporal difference, reducing the impacts of respiration harmonics and noise on HR estimation. In the signal decomposition module, the respiration and heartbeat signals are separated via wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) to further suppress respiration harmonics and high-frequency noise of the heartbeat signal. In the vital sign rate reconstruction module, the sparse spectrum reconstruction (SSR) of vital sign rates is mapped to an adaptive filter and zero attracting sign exponentially forgetting least mean square (ZA-SEFLMS) algorithm is proposed to achieve high-resolution sparse spectrum for accurate and reliable RR and HR estimation. The effects of different settings, including the distance between the human subject and the radar, the sensor position, and the user heterogeneity, are investigated by extensive exper- ments. The results indicate that the designed mmRH could effectively suppress the respiration harmonics, noise, and clutter interference, and bring a significant improvement in RR and HR detection accuracy compared with existing methods.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method to extract the respiratory and heartbeat movement of a static human body using a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave radar. the radar echoes reflected from the human chest surface, are used to extract the original time-varying phase signal, which contains the information of the respiratory and heartbeat micro-movements of the human chest. The phase difference signal is obtained by subtracting two consecutive frames of the phase signal. The phase difference signal is filtered processed in multiple stages to eliminate glitch noise interference, and then the Gaussian weighted filter and the ellipse filter are used to separate the respiratory signal and heartbeat signal, respectively. Finally, the respiratory rate and heart rate are extracted through a time-domain peak-searching algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method can well represent the chest movement mainly caused by breathing, and obtain more realistic respiratory and heartbeat waveforms to achieve more accurate rate detection.

Abstract:Radar has been shown potentially to be used for non-contact sensing of biosignals in a more comfortable and easier way than wearable and contact devices. By detecting and extracting body motions linked to physiological activities, accurate estimation of the heart rate is possible. However, the detection and estimation of heartbeat signal in practical applications is disturbed seriously by noise and respiration harmonic signal. In this study, a multi-level coarse-to-fine method is proposed for heartbeat rate (HR) estimation with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar operating at 60 GHz utilised to extract the heartbeat information of human body under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. First, the frequencies, which are likely to be the HR, are extracted in the coarse estimation part. Then, evaluations about the extracted frequencies are conducted in the fine estimation part. Finally, the multiple signal classification algorithm is utilised to separate the HR frequency from the respiration harmonics, which solves the frequency resolution issue caused by the observation window size, and achieves high accuracy estimation of HR. The experiments on measured data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the state of the art, the proposed method has superiority in terms of estimation accuracy of HR.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, non-contact vital sign estimation using millimeter wave radar technology has gotten much attention. Most studies are based on radar platforms that were not built for home scenarios and had high transmitting power and colossal volume. This work employs a low-power millimeter wave radar system produced using Antenna in Package technology (AiP) with a transmit power of less than 6 dBm, significantly lower than that commonly utilized in related research. However, in application scenarios, the echo intensity cannot be maintained at an optimal level with these low-power devices, making accurate and reliable monitoring difficult to obtain. To further reduce the noise component and improve the signal-to-noise ratio, a heartbeat monitoring algorithm based on wavelet transform noise reduction is suggested in this study. The low-frequency terms of the wavelet transform of the chest wall micro-motion signal are interpreted as body random swinging and breathing, and the remaining terms are interpreted as the heartbeat signal. In a 20-minute monitoring experiment, 96.96% accuracy is reached by the method proposed in this study in the context of home scenario monitoring.

Abstract:Non-contact vital sign monitoring has many advantages over conventional methods in being comfortable, unobtrusive and without any risk of spreading infection. The use of millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars is one of the most promising approaches that enable contact-less monitoring of vital signs. Novel low-power implementations of this technology promise to enable vital sign sensing in embedded, battery-operated devices. The nature of these new low-power sensors exacerbates the challenges of accurate and robust vital sign monitoring and especially the problem of heart-rate tracking. This work focuses on the investigation and characterization of three Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) low-power radars with different carrier frequencies of 24 GHz, 60 GHz and 120 GHz. The evaluation platforms were first tested on phantom models that emulated human bodies to accurately evaluate the baseline noise, error in range estimation, and error in displacement estimation. Additionally, the systems were also used to collect data from three human subjects to gauge the feasibility of identifying heartbeat peaks and breathing peaks with simple and lightweight algorithms that could potentially run in low-power embedded processors. The investigation revealed that the 24 GHz radar has the highest baseline noise level, 0.04mm at 0° angle of incidence, and an error in range estimation of 3.45 +- 1.88 cm at a distance of 60 cm. At the same distance, the 60 GHz and the 120 GHz radar system shows the least noise level, 0.0lmm at 0° angle of incidence, and error in range estimation 0.64 +- 0.01 cm and 0.04 +- 0.0 cm respectively. Additionally, tests on humans showed that all three radar systems were able to identify heart and breathing activity but the 120 GHz radar system outperformed the other two.

Vital Sign Monitoring in Dynamic Environment via mmWave Radar and Camera Fusion

Abstract:Contact-free vital sign monitoring, which uses wireless signals for recognizing human vital signs (i.e, breath and heartbeat), is an attractive solution to health and security. However, the subject's body movement and the change in actual environments can result in inaccurate frequency estimation of heartbeat and respiratory. In this paper, we propose a robust mmWave radar and camera fusion system for monitoring vital signs, which can perform consistently well in dynamic scenarios, e.g., when some people move around the subject to be tracked, or a subject waves his/her arms and marches on the spot. Three major processing modules are developed in the system, to enable robust sensing. Firstly, we utilize a camera to assist a mmWave radar to accurately localize the subjects of interest. Secondly, we exploit the calculated subject position to form transmitting and receiving beamformers, which can improve the reflected power from the targets and weaken the impact of dynamic interference. Thirdly, we propose a weighted multi-channel Variational Mode Decomposition (WMC-VMD) algorithm to separate the weak vital sign signals from the dynamic ones due to subject's body movement. Experimental results show that, the 90${^{th}}$ percentile errors in respiration rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR) are less than 0.5 RPM (respirations per minute) and 6 BPM (beats per minute), respectively.

Abstract:Electromagnetic radars have been shown potentially to be used for remote sensing of biosignals in a more comfortable and easier way than wearable and contact devices. While there is an increasing interest in using radars for health monitoring, their performance has not been tested and reported either in practical scenarios or with acceptable low errors. Therefore, we use a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar operating at 77 GHz in a bedroom environment to extract the respiration and heart rates of a patient, who is used to lying down on the bed. Indeed, the proposed signal processing contains advanced phase unwrapping manipulation, which is unique. In addition, the results are compared with a reliable reference sensor. Our results show that the correlations between the reference sensor and the radar estimates are in 94% and 80% for breathing and heart rates, respectively.

Abstract:Heart rate measurement technology based on Doppler radar can monitor heart rate in real time without direct contact with the skin, which possesses the advantages of convenient operation, comfort and insensitivity to the skin state. However, due to the limitation of radar’s performance, heartbeat signals obtained by radar sensor do not have clear peak value like electrocardiograms (ECGs) and pulse waves, which affects its measurement accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a non-contact short-term heart rate detection system based on 120 GHz narrow beam frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) millimeter wave radar. On the basis of improving the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) of intermediate frequency (IF) signals with narrow beam, this system applies stochastic resonance algorithm to enhance the amplitude of heartbeat signals submerged in radar system noise, thus enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of heartbeat signals and improving the accuracy of heart rate detection. The short-term heart rate of 10 volunteers is measured at 3 s interval under the condition that the radar sensor was 1 m from the human chest. Experimental results show that compared with the peak count of the reference pulse wave sensor, the results of this system are highly consistent with those of photoplethysmograph (PPG) detection. Finally, those results of heart rate detection are also used to analyze heart rate variability (HRV).

Abstract:Vital signs monitoring plays an essential role in physical health management. To this end, the contact techniques of electrocardiograms and smart bracelets have been widely studied, but there remain limitations, such as comfort, skin disease patients, and long-term monitoring. In this paper, a novel vital signs monitoring method based on millimeter-wave full-field micromotion sensing (MFMS) is presented to tackle the problems in the synchronous measurement of respiration and heartbeat of existing radar-based approaches. The overview and the principle of the proposed method are firstly depicted. The detailed procedures are then illustrated, including human body positioning, chest displacement extraction, vital signs monitoring, and heart rate variability (HRV) assessment. Finally, experimental results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed method, showing great potential in healthcare and smart home.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed and verified that a noncontact measurement to the human cardiogram could be implemented based on the inner connection between the bioelectrical signals that control the diastole and systole of human hearts and the volume change of atriums and ventricles taking place at the surface of skin. A K-band, board-integrated, highly linear and sensitive Doppler radar sensor was designed and implemented to detected such weak motions. Experimental results showed that by linearly retrieving the Doppler information from the signals scattered by the skin, the cardiogram can be measured. While the correspondence between this kind of cardiogram and the conventional ECG can be observed. And the cardiogram also includes velocity and strength information of the atrial and ventricular contractions and relaxations. Such characteristics are highly desirable for hospitalization and personal daily healthcare.
A Precise Respiratory and Heart Rate Detection Method for Millimeter-Wave Radar

Abstract:Millimeter wave radar as a type of noncontact sensor can more conveniently and insensibly obtain breathing and heartbeat signals. However, due to the weak radar echo signal and the influence of noise, there may be phase ambiguity and separation distortion of breathing and heartbeat signals during the processing, which affects the accuracy of detection. In this paper, an enhanced extended differential and cross multiplication (EDACM) algorithm is presented to obtain chest position signals without phase ambiguity. A specific order finite impulse response (FIR) filter with a Blackman window is applied to extract breath signals without waveform distortion from phase signals, and the heartbeat signal without rate distortion is extracted from the phase signal by means of the designed Chebyshev II filter. The measured results show that the proposed method achieves 96.78% accuracy for heart rate detection and 94.44% accuracy for respiratory rate detection, and improves the accuracy of heart rate detection by 2.22% and respiratory rate detection by 4.06% compared to the band-pass filter method under the same parameter conditions.

An Estimation of Missing Values by Modified Mixed Kernels

Abstract:----In statistical practices, difficulties of missing data are universal. Several techniques are used to handle this dilemma of missing data. They include both old approaches, which require only a small amount of mathematical computations and new approaches, which require additional difficult computations that are ever easier for social work researchers to carry out the statistical programming softwares. In the existing system, there is a novel setting of missing data imputation, i.e. imputing in mixed-attribute data sets. This system offers two consistent estimators for discrete and continuously missing target values, correspondingly. After that a mixture-kernel based iterative estimator is offered to impute mixed-attribute data sets. In this method, the local kernel and global kernel are used and linear combination of these mixed kernels is used. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the system is decreased with the large number of data samples. Unquestionably it will degrade the performance of the system. To improve the performance and to increase the accuracy of the system we proposed three approaches. First we introduce the local kernal RBF using KL divergence, secondly we introduce the global kernal polynomial using probability distribution and finally mixed kernels in piece level combination instead of linear combination. From the experimental result we can obtain that the proposed system is much more effective than the existing system. The performance also is shown to have improved in this proposed system. A Novel Frequency Tracking Algorithm for Non-Contact Vital Sign Monitoring

Abstract:Noncontact vital sign monitoring, based on mm-wave frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, can be widely applied in elderly care, clinical diagnoses, and in-vehicle occupant detection. The radar can monitor the Doppler signal reflected by the chest displacement and then analyze the phase change of echo to get the respiration and heartbeat signals. This article proposes a frequency-tracking method based on an improved birth–death strategy to calculate vital sign rate in real-time. There are two main steps to estimate the vital sign rate from frames within a second. First, the M-Rife algorithm is employed to interpolate the frequency of each frame. Second, find the matching frequency points between the adjacent frames in a second by using an improved birth–death strategy and calculate the frequency ratio for each matching point link. Then, choose the longest link whose initial frequency is closer to the frequency at the last second. The value of the link tail will be a vital sign rate at the current second. The proposed method is simulated in a public noncontact vital dataset to verify its feasibility and accuracy. To further demonstrate the method, this article carried out a series of experiments. The experimental results show that the method has an accuracy rate of 98% for the heartbeat rate in real-time and reduces the effect of clutter and respiratory harmonics on the heartbeat rate.

A new method for vital sign detection using FMCW radar based on random body motion cancellation

Abstract:In this study, we present a new method for acquiring human vital signs using a Range-Doppler matrix (RDM) of FMCW radar data and a Gaussian interpolation algorithm (GIA). First, the RDM is derived by applying a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT) to the radar data, and the GIA is applied in the Doppler dimension to estimate the target velocity signal. Subsequently, a robust enhanced trend filtering (RETF) algorithm is used to eliminate the large-scale body motion from the vital signs. Finally, the time-varying filter-based empirical mode decomposition (TVF-EMD) algorithm is employed to extract the respiratory and heartbeat intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which are filtered according to their respective spectral power to obtain the respiratory and heartbeat frequencies. The proposed method was evaluated using vital signs data collected from seven volunteers (4 males and 3 females) with Texas Instrument's AWR1642, and the results were compared with data from a reference monitor. The experiments showed that the method had an accuracy of 93 % for respiration and 95 % for heart rate in the presence of random body movements. Unlike traditional radar-based vital signs detection methods, this approach does not rely on range bin selection of the range profile matrix (RPM), thereby avoiding phase wrap problems and producing more accurate results. Currently, research in this field is limited.

Abstract:Noncontact detection of human vital signs based on miniaturized Doppler radar systems (DRSs) can be widely used in healthcare and biomedical applications. Although significant progresses have been achieved, a reliable wireless vital signs detection in the presence of large-scale random human body movements remains a technical challenge. In this paper, based on a comprehensive use of the high-dynamic-range radar architecture and linearized Doppler phase demodulation algorithms, we further introduce matched filters to retrieve the respiration and heartbeat spectra completely concealed under the wideband noise floor caused by large-scale body movements. Along with an existing 5.8-GHz system, a single-board integrated DRS operating at 24 GHz was designed to verify the effectiveness of the used architecture and algorithms. Experimental results comply with the theoretical expectation. The obtained results imply the potential to implement practical bioradar systems for human noncontact vital signs detections.
