Abstract:Future wireless networks are expected to be heterogeneous with dense deployment of pico (small cell) base stations (BSs) overlaid with traditional macro BSs. There are two performance bottlenecks in such heterogeneous networks (HetNet): the interference issue and cell-edge effect. We propose to combine cell-free BS-user association (BUA), power control, and dynamic user-side interference cancellation (IC) to mitigate these bottlenecks. By dynamically selecting the “best” serving BSs for each user, the cell-free BUA can exploit the multi-BS diversity gain to mitigate the interference and cell-edge effect. Furthermore, the user-side IC eliminates the strong cross-tier interference. We formulate the joint optimization of cell-free BUA, power allocation, and user-side IC as a weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization problem, and propose a WMMSE alternating optimization algorithm to solve it. Specifically, a generalized WMMSE method is proposed to solve the power optimization subproblem with nondifferentiable WSR function. Furthermore, by exploiting the specific problem structure, low complexity search methods are designed to find the optimal solutions of the combinatorial cell-free BUA and user-side IC subproblems. The proposed algorithm is shown to converge to a stationary solution of the joint problem. Simulations verify the significant gain of the proposed solution over existing solutions.
Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access and Network Slicing: Scalable Coexistence of eMBB and URLLC

Abstract:The 5G systems will feature three generic services: enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC). The diverse requirements of these services in terms of data-rates, number of connected devices, latency and reliability can lead to a sub-optimal use of the 5G network, thus network slicing is proposed as a solution that creates customized slices of the network specifically designed to meet the requirements of each service. Under the network slicing, the radio resources can be shared in orthogonal and non-orthogonal schemes. Motivated by Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) scenarios where a large number of sensors may require connectivity with stringent requirements of latency and reliability, we propose the use of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) to improve the number of URLLC users that are connected in the uplink to the same base station (BS), for both orthogonal and non-orthogonal network slicing with eMBB users. The multiple URLLC users transmit simultaneously and across multiple frequency channels. We set the reliability requirements for the two services and analyze their pair of sum rates. We show that, even with overlapping transmissions from multiple eMBB and URLLC users, the use of NOMA techniques allows us to guarantee the reliability requirements for both services.

Abstract:The emergence of the sixth generation (6G) era has highlighted the importance of Network Slicing (NS) technology as a promising solution for catering the diverse service requests of users. With the presence of a large number of devices with different service requests and since each service has different goals and requirements; efficiently allocating Resource Blocks (RBs) to each network slice is a challenging task to meet the desired Quality of Service (QoS) standards. However, it is worth noting that the majority of research efforts have primarily concentrated on cellular technologies, leaving behind the potential benefits of utilizing unlicensed bands to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the capacity of existing LTE networks. In this paper we propose a novel idea by exploiting LTE-WLAN Aggregation technology (LWA) in Multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) Heterogeneous Networks (HetNet), aiming to solve radio resource allocation problem based on the Radio Access Network (RAN) slicing and 5G New Radio (NR) scalable numerology technique. A joint optimization problem is proposed by jointly finding an efficient resource allocation ratio for each slice in each Base Station (BS) and by finding the optimum value of scalable numerology with the objective of maximizing users' satisfaction. In order to solve this problem, a novel three-stage framework is proposed which is based on channel state information as a pre-association stage, Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm as finding the optimum value of slice resource ratio and scalable numerology, and finally Regret Learning Algorithm (RLA) as users' re-association phase. Furthermore, a comprehensive performance evaluation is conducted against different baseline approaches. The simulation results show that our proposed model balances and achieves improvement in users' satisfaction by deploying the proposed Multi-RAT Het-Net architecture that leverages LWA technology.

Abstract:There are three generic services in 5G: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). To guarantee the performance of heterogeneous services, network slicing is proposed to allocate resources to different services. Network slicing is typically done in an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) fashion, which means different services are allocated non-interfering resources. However, as the number of users grows, OMA-based slicing is not always optimal, and a non-orthogonal scheme may achieve a better performance. This work aims to analyse the performances of different slicing schemes in uplink, and a promising scheme based on rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is studied. RSMA can provide a more flexible decoding order and theoretically has the largest achievable rate region than OMA and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) without time-sharing. Hence, RSMA has the potential to increase the rate of users requiring different services. In addition, it is not necessary to decode the two split streams of one user successively, so RSMA lets suitable users split messages and designs an appropriate decoding order depending on the service requirements. This work shows that for network slicing RSMA can outperform NOMA counterpart, and obtain significant gains over OMA in some region.

Abstract:Network slicing (NS) has been identified as one of the most promising architectural technologies for future mobile network systems to meet the extremely diversified service requirements of users. In radio access networks (RAN) slicing, service provisioning for slice users becomes much more complicated than that in traditional mobile networks, as the constraints of both user physical association with base station (BS) and logical association with NS should be considered. In other words, the user-BS-NS three layer association relationship should be addressed in provisioning tailored service for diversified use cases with various quality of service (QoS) requirements. Therefore, service provisioning in RAN slicing becomes an essential yet challenging issue for 5G and beyond systems. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for service provisioning in RAN slicing with aim of maximizing resource utilization while guaranteeing QoS of users. The framework consists of two steps. The first step is to identify a set of slice users whose QoS can be satisfied simultaneously; while the second step performs joint slice association and bandwidth allocation with aim to minimize bandwidth consumption. Numerical results show that in typical scenarios, our proposed service provisioning framework can achieve significant performance gain in terms of the number of serving users and wireless bandwidth utilization compared with traditional schemes.

Abstract:Network slicing is considered one of the key enabling technologies for 5G due to its ability to customize and "slice" a common resource to support diverse services and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://verticals.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> paper introduces a novel inter-operator network slicing framework in which multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) can coordinate and jointly slice their accessible spectrum resources in both licensed and unlicensed bands. For licensed band slicing, we propose an inter-operator spectrum aggregation method that allows two or more MNOs to cooperate and share their licensed bands to support a common set of service types. We then consider the sharing of unlicensed bands. Because all MNOs enjoy equal rights to accessing these bands, we introduce the concept of right sharing for MNOs to share and trade their spectrum access rights. We develop a {\em modified back-of-the-envelope (mBoE) method} for MNOs to evaluate their {\em Value-of-Rights (VoR)} when coexisting with other wireless technologies. A {\em network slicing game} based on the overlapping coalition formation game is formulated to investigate cooperation between MNOs. We prove that our proposed game always has at least one stable slicing structure that maximizes the social welfare. To implement our proposed framework without requiring MNOs to reveal private information to other MNOs, we develop a distributed algorithm called D-ADMM-PVS. Performance evaluation of our proposed framework is provided using a discrete-event simulator that is driven by real MNO deployment scenarios based on over 400 base station locations deployed by two primary cellular operators in the city of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Dublin.Numerical" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> results show that our proposed framework can almost double the capacity for all supported services for each MNO in an urban setting.

Joint User Pairing and Association for Multicell NOMA: A Pointer Network-based Approach

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the joint user pairing and association problem for multicell non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We consider a scenario where the user equipments (UEs) are located in a multicell network equipped with multiple base stations. Each base station has multiple orthogonal physical resource blocks (PRBs). Each PRB can be allocated to a pair of UEs using NOMA. Each UE has the additional freedom to be served by any one of the base stations, which further increases the complexity of the joint user pairing and association algorithm design. Leveraging the recent success on using machine learning to solve numerical optimization problems, we formulate the joint user pairing and association problem as a combinatorial optimization problem. The solution is found using an emerging deep learning architecture called Pointer Network (PtrNet), which has a lower computational complexity compared to solutions based on iterative algorithms and has been proven to achieve near-optimal performance. The training phase of the PtrNet is based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), and does not require the use of the optimal solution of the formulated problem as training labels. Simulation results show that the proposed joint user pairing and association scheme achieves near-optimal performance in terms of the aggregate data rate, and outperforms the random user pairing and association heuristic by up to 30%.

Abstract:Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems with cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFMM) frameworks can offer significant performance improvements for both sensing and communication functions. However, there is an obstacle to the system supporting an extremely large number of users in explosive terminal access scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-aided CFMM-ISAC architecture to enhance the connectivity and efficiency of the system. First, we consider a commonly used single-radar sensing scenario and jointly design user pairing and beamforming to maximize the minimum achievable communication rate while ensuring the sensing requirement. To solve the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem, the binary variables denoting the feasible pairing of users are first relaxed into continuous variables. An iterative optimization programming algorithm is then developed using the semidefinite relaxation (SDR), rank-one constraint omission (RCO), and successive convex approximation (SCA) approaches. To obtain feasible initial points of the iterative algorithm, we propose an initial point construction algorithm. Based on the obtained user pairing strategy, a corrective beamforming scheme is devised. We further extend our proposed algorithms to a generalized multi-radar sensing scenario. Simulation results validate that the proposed joint user pairing and beamforming design achieves noticeable performance improvements compared to the existing methods.

Abstract:Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) are the two main expected services in the next generation of wireless networks. Accommodation of these two services on the same wireless infrastructure leads to a challenging resource allocation problem due to their heterogeneous specifications. To address this problem, slicing has emerged as an architecture that enables a logical network with specific radio access functionality to each of the supported services on the same network infrastructure. The allocation of radio resources to each slice according to their requirements is a fundamental part of the network slicing that is usually executed at the radio access network (RAN). In this work, we formulate the RAN resource allocation problem as a sum-rate maximization problem subject to the orthogonality constraint (i.e., service isolation), latency-related constraint and minimum rate constraint while maintaining the reliability constraint with the incorporation of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). However, the formulated problem is not mathematically tractable due to the presence of a step-wise function associated with the AMC and a binary assignment variable. Therefore, to solve the proposed optimization problem, first, we relax the mathematical intractability of AMC by using an approximation of the non-linear AMC achievable throughput, and next, the binary constraint is relaxed to a box constraint by using the penalized reformulation of the problem. The result of the above two-step procedure provides a close-to-optimal solution to the original optimization problem. Furthermore, to ease the complexity of the optimization-based scheduling algorithm, a low-complexity heuristic scheduling scheme is proposed for the efficient multiplexing of URLLC and eMBB services. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed optimization and heuristic schemes is illustrated through extensive numerical simulations.

Abstract:An end-to-end (E2E) network slicing (NS) scheme for heterogeneous network (HetNet) is proposed in which the number of slices and instances of various network functions (NFs) are optimized contingent on the number of users (UEs) and their quality of service (QoS) requirements. The objective of the scheme is to empower future generation networks by considering control signaling in the control plane as well as the UE traffic in the user plane of the core network (CN). We formulate a joinT UE assOciation, wiReless bandwidth allocation, sliCe formation, slice assignment, virtual network function (VNF) placement, computing resource allocation, link assignment, and link bandwidtH allocation (TORCH) problem to minimize the E2E task completion time of all UEs while considering both control signaling and UEs’ traffic. Since TORCH is a mixed-integer nonlinear problem, to tackle the problem, we decompose it into two sub-problems: the link assignment problem and the UE Association, resource allocation, Slice formation, Slice AssIgnment, and VNF pLacement (ASSAIL) problem. The ASSAIL problem comprises both the core network (CN) and radio access network (RAN), and they do not compete for resources, so we decompose it into two sub-problems: the RAN problem and the CN problem. We use Dijkstra’s algorithm and a deep Q-learning network (DQN) based reinforcement learning method to iteratively solve the two sub-problems. Simulation results have confirmed the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in tackling the TORCH problem.

Abstract:Network slicing is a promising technology in 5G networks. The key concept is to divide the physical network into multiple logical networks, that are tailored to fulfill diverse service requirements. In this paper, we propose a multi-tenant radio access network (RAN) slicing approach that enables adaptive and isolated logical networks. We first formulate the multi-tenant RAN slicing problem as a centralized convex optimization problem that accounts for service resource requirements and ensures multi-tenant and multi-service isolation. Further, to reduce signaling load and preserve operator privacy, we portray the RAN slicing problem as a distributed non-cooperative game and prove the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium. We evaluate the efficiency of our distributed approach and then compare it with the state-of-the-art. Simulation results show that our distributed approach significantly improves resource utilization and operator satisfaction, while reducing computational complexity.

Partial NOMA-Based Resource Allocation for Fairness in LTE-U System

Abstract:In order to tackle the spectrum scarcity problem and enhance the spectrum efficiency, deploying LTE in unlicensed band (LTE-U) is an emerging technology for supporting massive connections in future networks. By taking into account of the coexistence between the LTE-U cellular user equipments (CUEs) and the legacy Wi-Fi stations (STAs) in the unlicensed band, a partial non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based scheme is proposed in this paper. By dividing all UEs into two groups and making the Wi-Fi STA as the UE with the weakest channel gain in its group, we can exploit the multiplexing gain of NOMA by introducing no extra modification to Wi-Fi STAs. Accordingly, a fairness-oriented resource allocation framework is formulated as a max-min problem to jointly optimize the inter-group time occupancy ratio and the intra-group power allocation when the guaranteed bit rate (GBR) requirements for each UE are considered. A modified two-dimensional bisection algorithm is proposed to search the optimal time occupancy ratio and the maxmin rate in this coexisting network. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the partial NOMA scheme and outperform the traditional orthogonal multiple access method, in terms of both efficiency and robustness.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) heterogeneous network (HetNet) has been regarded as a promising means to improve the cellular system capacity in the 5G era. In this paper, we investigate the joint user association and resource allocation problem in a multi-band mmWave HetNet where different bands have different propagation characteristics. According to whether a user can transmit on multiple mmWave bands simultaneously, two different access schemes are considered: the single-band access scheme and the multi-band access scheme. For the single-band access scheme, we first find a closed-form expression for the optimal time fraction allocation and then develop an iterative algorithm for joint user association and power allocation based on the Lagrangian dual decomposition methods and the Newton-Raphson method. For the multi-band access scheme, we develop a near-optimal solution based on the Markov approximation framework. Our analytical results reveal that different users can only access at most one band simultaneously although the multi-band access scheme allows a user to transmit on multiple bands. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that the multi-band access scheme performs better than the single-band access scheme, especially in the light load scenario.

Abstract:Future-generation radio access networks (RAN) are projected to fulfill the diverse requirements of user equipment (UE) by adopting a heterogeneous network (HetNet) environment. Necessary integration of different radio access technologies (RAT), such as 2G, 3G, 4G, wireless local area network (WLAN), and visible light communication (VLC) is inevitable. Moreover, UEs equipped with diverse requirements will be capable of accessing some or all the RATs. The complex HetNet environment with diverse requirements of UEs will present many challenges. The HetNet is likely to suffer severely from load imbalance among the base stations (BSs) from inheriting the traditional user association scheme such as max-SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio)/max-RSSI (received signal strength indicator), unless some sophisticated schemes are invented. In this paper, a novel scheme is devised for a joint-user association for load balancing, where BSs are densely deployed and UEs typically have a certain degree of mobility. Unlike most of the present works, a dynamic network is considered where the position and channel condition of the UEs are not fixed. We develop two complex and distributed association schemes based on probability and d-choices, while carefully considering both loads of the BSs and SINR experienced by the UEs. Numerical results validate the efficiency of the proposed schemes by showing a received data-rate fairness among UEs and an improvement in the UE's minimum received data rate.

Abstract:Network slicing is an effective 5G concept for improved resource utilization and service scalability tailored to users (UEs) requirements. According to the standardization, 5G system should support UEs through specification of its heterogenous requirements such as, high data rates, traffic density, latency, reliability, UE density, system efficiency and service availability. These requirements are specified as Service Level Agreements (SLAs) between UEs and network operators resulting in increased interest to develop novel challenging mechanisms for improved interference-free resource efficient performances. An emerging concept that enables such demanding SLA assurances is Open-Radio Access Network (O-RAN). In this paper, we study a novel resource scheduling problem for UE services conditioned on other services in network slicing. To improve system performance, we propose that UEs are connected across network slices to serve several applications. UEs of similar service classes (defined by SLAs) are grouped to form optimized slice-in-slice category(s) within network slice(s).We propose novel Predictive Dynamic Scaling Multi-UE service specific System Resource Optimized Scheduling (DMUSO) algorithm(s). Multiobjective multi-constraint optimization problems (MOP) are formed to learn the dynamic system resource allocation and throughput for UE services conditioned on new services entering the network slice. An epsilon-constraint line search algorithm is presented to estimate UE service bandwidth. Using the theoretical models, DMUSO forms optimal slice-in-slice categories and estimates the maximum dynamic additional slice-in-slice categories, throughput served across network slices. Finally, compared to state-of-the-art literatures, DMUSO guarantees UEs SLAs with 4.4 and 7.5 times performance gains

Abstract:Open radio access network (ORAN) alliance which has been formed recently establishes a flexible, open, and smart radio access network (RAN) by combing the ideas from xRAN and cloud RAN (C-RAN). ORAN divides the functions of the RAN into three parts, namely remote unit (RU), distributed unit (DU), and central unit (CU). While RU contains lower PHY functions, DU contains higher PHY, MAC, and RLC and CU contains RRC, PDCP, and SDAP. CU and DU are implemented as virtual network functions (VNFs) running on a cloud environment. Interface between RU, CU, and DU are open standard interfaces. Network slicing as a new concept in 5G systems is used to share the network resources between various services while the operation of one service does not affect another service. In this paper, we study the problem of RAN network slicing in an ORAN system. We formulate the problem of wireless link scheduling, mapping the slices to the services, and mapping the physical data centers resource to slices. The objective is to jointly maximize the energy efficiency and minimize power consumption of RUs and the cost of physical resources in a downlink channel. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer optimization problem that can be decomposed into two independent sub-problems. Heuristic algorithms are proposed for each of the sub-problems.

Abstract:The increasing demand for massive connectivity and high data rates has made the efficient use of existing spectrum resources an increasingly challenging problem. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a potential solution for future heterogeneous networks (HetNets) due to its high capacity and spectrum efficiency. In this study, we analyze an uplink NOMA-enabled vehicular-aided HetNet, where multiple vehicular user equipment (VUEs) share the access link spectrum, and a high-altitude platform (HAP) communicates with roadside units (RSUs) through a backhaul communication link. We propose an improved algorithm for user association that selects VUEs for HAPs based on channel coefficient ratios and terrestrial VUEs based on a caching-state backhaul communication link. The joint optimization problems aim to maximize a utility function that considers VUE transmission rates and cross-tier interference while meeting the constraints of backhaul transmission rates and QoS requirements of each VUE. The joint resource allocation optimization problem consists of three sub-problems: bandwidth allocation, user association, and transmission power allocation. We derive a closed-form solution for bandwidth allocation and solve the transmission power allocation sub-problem iteratively using Taylor expansion to transform a non-convex term into a convex one. Our proposed three-stage iterative algorithm for resource allocation integrates all three sub-problems and is shown to be effective through simulation results. Specifically, the results demonstrate that our solution achieves performance improvements over existing approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the radio access network (RAN) slicing in heterogeneous communication systems. Typically, the infrastructure provider (InP) allocates the radio resources to the mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) as RAN slices, and then the MVNOs use the allocated resources to provide services for their users. As the RAN being heterogeneous, the users are generally with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Besides, the MVNOs also have different intrinsic interests in terms of collecting revenue and satisfying users QoS demand and thus require different amount of resources. In this regard, it is challenging for the InP to determine the resource allocation strategy. To deal with this issue, we propose a three-layer Stackelberg game (TLSG) to jointly solve the frequency and power allocation for the InP. We derive the unique equilibrium for the special case where each MVNO uniform users and propose a bi-level differential evolution algorithm for more general cases. Simulation results reveal that both users and the InP can be better off when the RAN is sliced for different types of users, and that the MVNOs focusing more on revenue collecting result in the InP and the users obtaining less payoff.

Abstract:The diverse requirements of beyond 5G services increase design complexity and demand dynamic adjustments to the network parameters. This can be achieved with slicing and programmable network architectures such as the open radio access network (ORAN). It facilitates the tuning of the network components exactly to the demands of future-envisioned applications as well as intelligence at the edge of the network. Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently drawn a lot of interest for its potential to solve challenging issues in wireless communication. Due to the non-deterministic, random, and complex behavior of models and parameters involved in the process, radio resource management is one of the topics that needs to be addressed with such techniques. The study presented in this paper proposes quality of service (QoS)-aware intra-slice resource allocation that provides superior performance compared to baseline and state of the art strategies. The slice-dedicated intelligent agents learn how to handle resources at near-RT RIC level time granularities while optimizing various key performance indicators (KPIs) and meeting QoS requirements for each end user. In order to improve KPIs and system performance with various reward functions, the study discusses Markov's decision process (MDP) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques, notably the deep Q network (DQN). The simulation evaluates the efficacy of the algorithm under dynamic conditions and various network characteristics. Results and analysis demonstrate the improvement in the performance of the network for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) slice categories.

Abstract:Recently, Heterogeneous Networks (HetNet) are concentrated more in order to improve transmission coverage and spectrum efficiency. When compared to HetNet, Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is used to allow multiple users to share the same frequency band resource. Moreover, cross-tier links are improved in realistic HetNets due to channel delay and random perturbation. In this research, a fuzzy logic-based user association and pairing was proposed to improve the system robustness and energy utilization. Here, fuzzy logic overcomes the limitations of traditional channel-based and gain-based pairing schemes. The proposed fuzzy logic-based system evaluates distance, channel gain, and reference signal power for mode selection and enhances pairing features. Nature-inspired cuckoo search optimization is also used to improve coverage probability, feasible rate, and energy efficiency by optimizing the path loss, transmit power, and distance between user and base station. The proposed model analysis is carried out through intense simulation to demonstrate improved performance when compared to conventional state-of-the-art techniques.
