Abstract:Abiotic stress is a major threat to crop yield stability. Plants can be primed by heat stress, which enables them to subsequently survive temperatures that are lethal to a plant in the naïve state. This is a rapid response that has been known for many years and that is highly conserved across kingdoms. Interestingly, recent studies in Arabidopsis and rice show that this thermo-priming lasts for several days at normal growth temperatures and that it is an active process that is genetically separable from the priming itself. This is referred to as maintenance of acquired thermotolerance or heat stress memory. Such a memory conceivably has adaptive advantages under natural conditions, where heat stress often is chronic or recurring. In this review, I will focus on recent advances in the mechanistic understanding of heat stress memory.

Abstract:Background The increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) during the menopausal transition might partly attribute to the changes in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). However, few studies were conducted to examine the associations of FSH and LH concentrations with MetS at the full range of reproductive aging, especially in the US population. The aim of this study is to examine the associations of FSH, LH, and LH/FSH ratio with the risk of MetS and severity score in the US women. Methods Data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Women aged from 35 to 60 years were eligible. MetS was defined as having at least 3 of the following: a waist circumference ≥ 88 cm, a triglycerides level ≥ 150 mg/dL, a high density lipoprotein < 50 mg/dL, a systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 85 mm Hg or taking hypertension medications, or a fasting plasma glucose level ≥100 mg/dL or taking diabetes medications. The MetS severity score was calculated according to race/ethnicity- specific equation. Results There were 3,831 women included in this study. Increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1 SD were separately linked to a 22.6% ( OR : 0.774; 95% CI : 0.646, 0.929; and P = 0.006) and 18.5% ( OR : 0.815; 95% CI : 0.690, 0.962; and P = 0.006) lower risk of MetS only in postmenopausal women. Meanwhile, increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1SD were associated with a decrease of -0.157 ( 95% CI :-2.967, -2.034) and -0.078 ( 95% CI : -2.688, -1.806) MetS severity score in perimenopausal women and -0.195 ( 95% CI : -2.192, -1.023) and -0.098 ( 95% CI :-1.884, -0.733) in postmenopausal women. However, LH/FSH ratio had no connections with the risk of MetS and MetS severity score across the menopausal transition. Conclusions Elevated serum FSH and LH levels, but not LH/FSH ratio, were associated with a lower risk of MetS and MetS severity score, especially in postmenopausal women. Therefore, serum FSH and LH levels might be efficient predictors for screening and identifying women at risk of MetS across the menopausal transition.

Elevated serum fluoride levels in perimenopausal women are related to the components of metabolic syndrome

Abstract:Objective: Increased fluoride levels can lead to numerous complications, including skeletal effects, cardiotoxicity, endocrine dysfunction, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between serum fluoride levels and MetS or its individual components, and to assess the diagnostic usefulness of fluoride as a factor contributing to MetS. Patients and methods: The study included a group of 475 women (mean age of 52.9 years), living in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. The study involved data collection and biochemical analysis. Results: Analysis of the relationship between the levels of fluoride and the presence of MetS or its components showed that the mean fluoride level was statistically significantly higher in patients with hypertriglyceridemia (dCohen = 0.39; 95% CI; confidence limits: 0.13, 0.63) and hypertension (dCohen = 0.25; 95% CI; confidence limits: 0.07, 0.44). Moreover, the mean fluoride level was significantly higher in women who met the diagnostic criteria for MetS than in the remaining subjects (dCohen = 0.40; 95% CI; confidence limits: 0.17, 0.64). Conclusions: Elevated serum fluoride levels may be associated with an increased incidence of MetS among perimenopasal women, although its diagnostic value as a marker of MetS is limited.
Relationship between the Concentrations of Heavy Metals and Bioelements in Aging Men with Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract:Heavy metals may exacerbate metabolic syndrome (MS) but abnormal serum concentrations of bioelements may also co-exist with MS. The primary aim of the study was to assess the relationship of blood heavy metal and bioelement concentrations and MS, in men aged 50–75 years. Heavy metals—lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), tungsten (W), Macroelements—magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca), and microelements—iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn), body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR), abdominal circumference (AC) and blood pressure (BP), total cholesterol (TCh), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride (TG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, and Homeostasis Model Assessment—Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The men with MS showed statistically significant higher Zn and lower Mg concentrations. Those with diabetes had higher Ca concentration and lower Mg concentration. Cr and Mn concentrations were significantly higher in obese men. The participants with hypertension had lower Mg concentration. We found statistically significant positive correlations (W-TCh, W-LDL, Mg-TCh, Mg-LDL, Ca-TCh, Ca-LDL, Ca-insulin, Ca-HOMAR-IR, Zn-TG, Zn-insulin, Zn-HOMA-IR, Cu-BP systolic, Mn-BMI, Mn-AC, Mn-WHR, Mn-insulin, Mn-HOMA-IR, Se-TCh, Se-LDL, Se-TG, Se-insulin, Se-HOMA-IR, Cr-TCh, Cr-HDL, Cr-LDL, Cr-TG) and negative correlations (Cd-insulin, Hg-WHR, W-insulin, W-HOMA-IR, Mg-BMI, Mg-AC, Mg-WHR, Mg-BP systolic, Mo-insulin, Mn-HDL). Tungsten may contribute to lipid disorders. Magnesium appears to play the protective role in the occurrence of metabolic disorders. Microelements Mn, Cr and Se may intensify MS.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that serum levels of phospholipid (PL) fatty acids (FA) and minerals are associated with the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the Chinese population and the profiles of changes may differ from patients with MetS from Western countries. The levels of serum PL, FA, and minerals were examined in 201 subjects (52 with MetS and 149 healthy controls without any MetS components) in China. The saturated FA proportion in serum was significantly higher, whereas the proportion of total polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), n-3 and n-6 PUFA (22:6n-3: -16%, P = .006; 20:4n-6: -36%, P < .001), and estimated δ-5 desaturase were significantly lower in the MetS group compared with those that are not MetS. Subjects with MetS had higher levels of serum Zn (P = .037) and Mg (P < .001) than subjects without MetS. The proportion of n-3 PUFA was significantly negatively correlated with body mass index and waist circumference. In conclusion, serum PL FA composition and serum minerals in Chinese men with MetS differed significantly from that of healthy individuals, reflecting a decrease in n-3 and n-6 PUFA, especially 22:6n-3 and 20:4n-6, and an increase in saturated FA, magnesium, and zinc. These changes may reflect improper dietary intake in subjects with MetS, and dietary modification could be useful to prevent MetS and as an adjunctive therapy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Background: We have recruited a group of four living and reviewed the records of six deceased distantly related French-Canadians of Acadian descent affected by a childhood-onset form of recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD). All cases originate from the small archipelago of the Magdalen Islands (population: 13,000) isolated in the Gulf of St-Lawrence. Methods: Based on the likely sharing of the same founder mutation we completed a 319K SNPs genome-wide scan to identify the disease locus and then screen candidate genes in this region. Results: All patients had normal initial motor milestones. They presented with limb girdle weakness at the average age of seven years (5-11). Progressive weakness led to loss of ambulation at a wide range of ages (10-39). Patients also developed macroglossia, large calves and mild to moderate contractures, hyperlordosis and decreased pulmonary function. Creatine kinase levels were elevated (1,800-10,000 U/L) in the first decades, but decreased with progression of disease. Homozygosity mapping uncovered a shared chromosomal region of 6.33Mb. The alpha sarcoglycan (SGCA) gene, mutated in LGMD2D, lay in this candidate interval. Sequencing of all SGCA exons uncovered a shared homozygous missense mutation (c.229C>T, p.R77C), the most common SGCA mutation internationally reported. Using demographic data, we estimated a high carrier rate of 1/22. Conclusion: The p.R77C mutation has also been observed in many populations, including in France and Spain (Basques). This corresponds to the first reported recessive founder disease for the Magdalen Islands, an archipelago settled in the XlXth century, largely by Acadian immigrants.

Abstract:Risk elements in blood matrices can affect human health status through associations with biomarkers at multiple levels. The aim of this study was to analyze 15 macro- and microelements in the blood serum of women with overweight (BMI of ≥25 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI of ≥30 kg/m2) and to examine possible associations with biochemical, liver enzymatic parameters, and markers of oxidative stress. Based on the power calculation, the study involved women (in the postmenopausal stage) whom are overweight (n = 26) and obese (n = 22), aged between 50–65 years. Multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to measure body composition parameters. Concentrations of elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and Hg was measured using cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy. Individuals with obesity, as indicated by a higher BMI, percentage of body fat, and visceral fat area, had elevated serum levels of Ca, Mg, Fe, Al, Sr, Pb, and Hg. Concentrations of Al, Cu, K, Sb, Zn, and Pb significantly affected biochemical and liver function markers in women who were overweight or obese. Elements such as Cu and Al were associated with increased total cholesterol. The correlation analysis between total antioxidant status and Cu, Al, and Ni confirmed associations in both groups. Our findings underscore the importance of addressing excess body weight and obesity in relation to risk elements. The results of the research could be beneficial in identifying potential targets for the treatment or prevention of comorbidities in people with obesity.

Analysis of relevant factors of abnormal component factors in metabolic syndrome in pre-and post-menopausal women

Abstract:Objective To study the relevant risk factors of metabolic disorders in pre-and post-menopausal women.Methods Eighty-four healthy women aged 45-55 years from 1st to 30th,June 2016 in Beijing Shijitan Hospital,Capital Medical University were chosen as the research object.According to the guidelines of the 2013 Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS) in metabolic syndrome (MS) diagnostic criteria,women were divided into normal metabolic group (n=39) and abnormal metabolic group (n=45).The general condition,reproductive history,past history,lifestyle and menopause symptoms were recorded through questionnaire and physical examination was done.Blood testing was performed,including anti Mullerian hormone (AMH),sex hormone,blood lipid,blood routine,blood biochemistry,etc.Univariate and multiple Logistic regression analysis were used for estimating odds ratios for the association of abnormal component factors in metabolic syndrome and the various factors.Results Univariate analysis showed that history of uterine leiomyoma,sitting time,frequencies of eating fruit,platelet count,platelet volume,platelet distribution width,uric acid,gamma glutamyl transferase and creatinine,the difference was statistically significant between group (P ＜ 0.05).Multivariate Logistic regression showed that history of uterine leiomyoma (OR=9.219;95％CI:1.232-68.991;P=0.031) and increase of serum uric acid (OR=1.019;95％CI:1.003-1.035;P=0.019) were positively related to abnormal metabolic factors of metabolic syndrome.Conclusion Sedentary behavior,history of uterine leiomyoma and hyperuricemia may be the risk factors of metabolic abnormality in pre-and post-menopausal women.Fruit intake may have protective effect on metabolic syndrome.However,there was no correlation between ovarian function and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract:The increased life expectancy and the occurrence of premature menopause prolong the mean postmenopausal phase in women's lifespans. Although the roles of poor socioeconomic status (SES), anthropometric characteristics, and nutritional status in premature menopause and the health of postmenopausal women are well understood, the differences in nutritional status and metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence in postmenopausal women depending on their menopause age are less explored. Furthermore, the association between SES and MetS risk in postmenopausal women is not studied. Thus, this study aimed to compare distinct nutritional status and MetS risk between women with premature menopause and natural menopause. Additionally, the association among SES, health-related lifestyle behaviors (HLBs), and MetS risk in postmenopausal women was studied. This study included 31,799 postmenopausal women from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The relationship between disease prevalence and nutrient intake of the subjects was analyzed using analysis of variance (GLM), and Scheffé test was performed. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association among SES, HLBs, and MetS as well as premature menopause. Women with premature menopause showed poor SES, anthropometric characteristics, and HLBs compared with women with natural menopause. Additionally, premature menopausal women had markedly lower intakes of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acid, n-3 fatty acid, and β-carotene, but higher intakes of energy, carbohydrate, saturated fatty acid, and sugar than women with natural menopause (p < 0.0001). Premature menopausal women showed significantly higher MetS prevalence by having hypertriglyceridemia (p < 0.0001), hypertension (p = 0.0145), and reduced HDL cholesterol levels (p < 0.0001) relative to natural menopausal women. Furthermore, our findings indicate a substantial link among SES, HLBs, and the risk of premature menopause. In postmenopausal women, deteriorating SES and HLBs appear to influence the prevalence of MetS. Notably, our study reveals that higher intakes of protein, calcium, phosphate, and iron are correlated with a lower risk of developing MetS. These observations suggest that proactive nutritional education for premature menopausal women is necessary to improve MetS risk and their nutritional status. Also, SES-dependent interventions regarding nutrition and HLBs in postmenopausal women will be significant to lower MetS risk, MetS-derived chronic disease, and mortality in postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the anthropometric, lipid, and dietary profiles of postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome attending a public health service and compare them with a group of women without metabolic syndrome. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 postmenopausal women who were divided into two groups: control group and metabolic syndrome group, attending the Climacteric Outpatient Clinic at Santa Casa de São Paulo Hospital, Brazil, between February 2019 and December 2021. Participants were evaluated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, body mass index, waist circumference, and serum laboratory tests. Results: Significant differences were observed between the groups regarding body mass index and all parameters of metabolic syndrome. The nutritional profile revealed an imbalance in the number of food portions consumed, particularly in the intake of carbohydrates in the form of flour and sweets, which was higher in the metabolic syndrome group. Conclusion: The analysis of the three profiles of postmenopausal women revealed significant imbalances, particularly in the metabolic syndrome group, highlighting the importance of regular adjustments and evaluations during this phase of a woman's life.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese postmenopausal women and explore the optimum body composition indices to predict MetS.Methods: Participants were independent, community-dwelling women. Recruitment occurred through advertisements in newspapers and flyers posted in the local community. A total of 181 postmenopausal women were recruited. Their parameters were measured, including body height, weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, sagittal abdominal diameter, blood pressure, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose, and body fat (BF; %). Logistic regression analyses were applied for correlation between stated variables. Optimization of body composition indices to predict MetS in postmenopausal women was analyzed with the area under the curve of the receiver.Results: The prevalence of MetS in postmenopausal women was 33.7%. The risk factors of MetS in postmenopausal women were age, family history of metabolic disorders (obesity, hypertension, hyperlipemia, and diabetes mellitus), body composition indices (body mass index [BMI], WC, waist-to-hip ratio, sagittal abdominal diameter, and BF), and metabolic indices (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and triglyceride; odds ratio 9 1, P < 0.05), and the protective factor is high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (odds ratio = 0.114, P < 0.05). All body composition indices in our study had a positive correlation with number of MetS factors. The body composition indices in our study showed a positive correlation with each other (P < 0.001). BMI and WC were highly correlated with BF (r 9 0.900, P < 0.001). Through receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, it was determined that body composition indices (WC, 80.75 cm; BF, 36.695%; sagittal abdominal diameter, 18.35 cm; or BMI, 24.835 kg/m(2)) could be used to predict MetS.Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS in Chinese postmenopausal women is 33.7%. Body composition indices (WC >= 80.75 cm, BF >= 36.695%, sagittal abdominal diameter >= 18.35 cm, or BMI >= 24.835 kg/m2) were discovered to predict MetS.

Abstract:Menopausal hormonal changes have been associated with the emergence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its consequences such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The common gene signature and the associated signaling pathways of MetS, T2D, CVD and menopause status have not been widely studied. We analyzed a total of 314 women aged between 35 and 75 years. The sample was divided into two groups: Group I, including women in the premenopausal period and Group II, comprising women in the post-menopausal period. The presence of MetS and its components were evaluated, as well as occurrence of T2D and CVD in both groups. We also exploited the translational bioinformatics approach to choose the common gene signatures for MetS, T2D, CVD and the menopause status. The frequency of the MetS was significantly higher in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal ones (67.1 vs. 27.2%, p < 0.001). Gene mining analysis revealed that a total of 47 genes were commonly associated with MetS, T2D, CVD and the menopausal changes. The gene enrichment analysis showed that these genes were markedly enriched in biological processes, including positive regulation of binding, positive regulation of leukocyte cell–cell adhesion, regulation of lipid localization. Furthermore, P53 signaling pathway, prolactin signaling pathway, parathyroid hormone synthesis, secretion and action were the top enriched pathways. Additionally, network analysis revealed TGFB1, SPP1, MMP2, MMP9, CCL2, IGF1, EGFR, ICAM1, TNF and IL6 as important hub genes with significant interacting partners. These hub genes identified in our study may play key role in menopausal changes and influence the risks of MetS, T2D and CVD.

Abstract:Background: There is conflicting evidence on the effect of specific micronutrient concentration and cancer risk. In this study, we investigated the differences in serum zinc, copper, iron, and manganese levels and different endometrial pathologies, including endometrial cancer. Methods: 110 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of endometrial cancer, benign uterine conditions (endometrial polyp, endometrial hyperplasia, uterine myoma), or normal endometrium were included in the study and assessed in terms of endometrial cancer risk factors. The measurements of serum micronutrients were conducted using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Results: When assessing for differences between serum concentrations of trace metals, we found significant differences in the distribution of Mn (p < 0.001) and Fe (0.034). There was also a significant difference in Cu/Zn ratio between the analyzed groups (p = 0.002). Patients' BMI was found to influence Cu concentration, with obese patients having higher mean copper concentration (p = 0.006). Also, patients' menopausal status was shown to influence Cu concentration with postmenopausal patients having higher Cu levels (p = 0.001). The menopausal status was found to influence Cu/Zn ratio (p = 0.002). Univariable regression analysis did not confirm that any of the micronutrients significantly influence the risk of endometrial cancer. Conclusion: The concentration of specific trace metals varies between different histopathological diagnoses of endometrial pathologies. Menopausal status and patient BMI are endometrial cancer risk factors impacted by the concentrations of Cu and Zn and their ratio.

The Synergistic Effects of Vitamin D and Estradiol Deficiency on Metabolic Syndrome in Chinese Postmenopausal Women

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Recent studies show that vitamin D (VitD) deficiency is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Current evidence suggests that estrogen and VitD have similar physiological functions and potentially interact with bone health. We investigated the association between estradiol (E2) and 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH)D] with MetS and its components in Chinese postmenopausal women.METHODS:In this cross-sectional study, we examined 616 postmenopausal women (aged 49-86 y) from southern China who were not taking estrogen and VitD/calcium supplements. At the end of data collection, serum E2 and 25(OH)D were measured for each participant. MetS was defined according to the 2006 International Diabetes Federation standard.RESULTS:There was a positive correlation between 25(OH)D and E2. Higher 25(OH)D was associated with a favorable lipid profile, blood pressure, and glucose level. E2 was negatively associated with cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. The odds ratio for MetS was 2.19 (95% CI, 1.19-4.01, P value for trend=0.009) for deficient compared with sufficient women after multivariable adjustment. This association remained unchanged after further adjusting for E2 levels. After stratified analysis by VitD status, low E2 increased MetS risk in women with VitD deficiency (odds ratio = 3.49, 95% CI, 1.45-8.05 for the lowest vs the highest tertile).CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest a synergistic role of VitD and E2 deficiency in MetS in Chinese postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the association of years since menopause with MetS and Insulin Resistance (IR) in Chinese women. Method: A total of 4436 Chinese subjects aged 40-80 years participated in the study; 790 were premenopausal women, and 3646 were postmenopausal women. IR was arbitrarily defined as a homeostasis model assessment-IR index (HOMA-IR) value above the 75th percentile of normal glucose tolerance (NGT). MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation consensus definition. To test whether there was an association between the number of years since menopause and MetS, multivariate logistic analysis was conducted. Premenopausal women were used as a comparison group in regression analyses. Results: After adjustment for age, body mass index (BMI), and -glutamyltransferase (GGT), more years since menopause was highly associated with an increased risk of MetS (p for trend <0.05) ; the number of years since menopause was not correlated with fasting insulin and HOMA-IR. Postmenopausal women with 10 to 14 years since menopause had the highest risk (odds ratio [OR], 2.10; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.52-2.89, p<.05) of MetS, high triglycerides (TG; OR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.34-2.42, p<.05) and high glucose (OR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.14-2.05, p<.05) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.18-2.32, p<.05). Postmenopausal women with more than 15 years since menopause had the highest risk of abdominal obesity (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.05-2.71, p<.05). Conclusion: In China, more years since menopause was highly associated with an increased risk of MetS. Menopausal history may help identify women with increased risk of developing MetS.
Gender-Specific Independent and Combined Effects of the Progesterone and 17-Hydroxyprogesterone on Metabolic Syndrome: from the Henan Rural Cohort Study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Although the concentrations of progesterone (P4) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) have been correlated with some characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MetS), the relationships with MetS are inconclusive. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between P4 and 17-OHP with MetS.METHODS:In all, the present study includes 4807 participants. Serum P4 and 17-OHP were measured through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were used to assess the independent and combined effects of P4 and 17-OHP on MetS.RESULTS:After adjusting for multiple variables, the positive association of P4 with MetS was observed in postmenopausal women (Third tertiles vs First tertiles: OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.20-1.86) and the negative association of 17-OHP with MetS was observed in men (Third tertiles vs First tertiles: OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.32-0.58). Compared with the combination of low P4 and low 17-OHP, the combination of high P4 and high 17-OHP were significantly related to MetS in postmenopausal women (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.18-2.48). Moreover, the combination of low P4 and high 17-OHP was negatively associated with MetS in men (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.24-0.69).CONCLUSION:The association between P4 and MetS in postmenopausal women was positive, whereas 17-OHP was negatively associated with MetS in men. Additionally, their combination has a synergistic effect on MetS in postmenopausal women and an antagonistic effect on MetS in men.

Abstract:BACKGROUND : The global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is currently a real threat due to association with major chronic non-communicable diseases. Abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia contribute significantly to cardiometabolic risk in late postmenopausal women. AIM : to assess the frequency of deficiency and insufficiency of 25(OH)D in late postmenopausal residents of Yekaterinburg; to establish associations of 25(OH)D serum concentration with components of metabolic syndrome and severity of menopausal symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS : During the period from October 2018 to March 2020 145 independently living late postmenopausal residents of Yekaterinburg were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. The following scope of data regarding each of the subjects was collected: complaints and anamnesis, anthropometry, diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, assessment of 25 (OH)D level by the ECLIA method, LDL-C, HDL-C levels, serum TG by the enzymatic colorimetric method, as well as the evaluation of the modified menopausal index. RESULTS : Adequate serum level of 25(OH)D was detected in 20.6% patients, insufficiency and deficiency were found in 33.1 and 46.2% cases, respectively. In patients with vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, the most frequent metabolic syndrome components were arterial hypertension (p=0.02; OR 3.5; CI 1.2–10.6) and abdominal obesity (p=0.03; OR 2.8; CI 1.1–7.2). Vitamin D deficient subjects had significantly lower serum HDL and increased TG levels (p=0.04), compared to the adequately provided 25(OH)D patients. Vitamin D levels were not associated with the severity of menopausal symptoms in late postmenopausal women. Regular daily intake of 400–2000 IU of colecalciferol contributed to higher serum 25(OH)D level. CONCLUSION : a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among postmenopausal women of Yekaterinburg was detected. Diagnosis and correction of vitamin D levels are necessary for timely reduction of cardiometabolic risk, primarily due to the potential pleiotropic effects of D-hormone on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.

Abstract:Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the relationship between total serum testosterone level (TT) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among adult female population. Subgroup analysis further stratified the population by menopausal status to address the potential hormonal difference in postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 1966 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2012 cycle was included for analysis in this study. MetS was defined based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. Serum TT was collected during the physical examination of the NHANES program and divided into quartiles (Q) in this analysis. Menopausal status was determined based on NHANES Reproductive Health Questionnaire. Logistic regression models were applied for analysis. Results The odds of MetS in Q2: 12.99–19.38 ng/mL (OR = 0.641, 95%CI 0.493–0.835, P < 0.01), Q3: 19.39–28.38 ng/mL (OR = 0.476, 95%CI 0.362–0.626, P < 0.001), and Q4: ≥28.40 ng/mL (OR = 0.390, 95%CI 0.294–0.517, P < 0.001) were statistically lower compared to the reference Q1: <12.99 ng/mL. For the postmenopausal group, a significantly lower odds of MetS was observed in the Q2 (OR = 0.689, 95%CI 0.486–0.977, P < 0.05) and Q4 (OR = 0.606, 95%CI 0.399–0.922, P < 0.05), while the odds of Q3 (OR = 0.439, 95%CI 0.248–0.779, P < 0.01) and Q4 (OR = 0.464, 95%CI 0.261–0.825, P < 0.01) were significantly lower than the reference Q1 in the premenopausal group. Conclusions Elevated TT levels are associated with incremental reductions in the odds of metabolic syndrome among adult females. Although, serum testosterone level is associated with the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in both the postmenopausal and the premenopausal group, the patterns of the relationship are different.
