Abstract:Purpose Considering the world population, an additional 415.1 billion m 2 of built floor will be needed by 2050, which could worsen the environmental impact of the construction industry that is responsible for one-third of global Carbon Emissions (CEs). Thus, the current construction practices need to be upgraded toward eco-friendly technologies. Building Information Modeling (BIM) proved a significant potential to enhance Building and Infrastructure (B&I) ecological performances. However, no previous study has evaluated the nexus between BIM and B&I CEs. This study aims to fill this gap by disclosing the research evolution and metrics and key concepts and tools associated with this nexus. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-method design was adopted based on scientometric and scoping reviews of 52 consistent peer-reviewed papers collected from 3 large scientific databases. Findings This study presented six research metrics and revealed that the nexus between BIM and CEs is a contemporary topic that involves seven main research themes. Moreover, it cast light on six key associated concepts: Life Cycle Assessment; Boundary limits; Building Life Cycle CE (BLCCE); Responsible sources for BLCCE; Green and integrated BIM; and sustainable buildings and related rating systems. Furthermore, it identified 56 nexus-related Information and Communication Technologies tools and 17 CE-coefficient databases and discussed their consistency. Originality/value This study will fill the knowledge gap by providing scholars, practitioners and decision-makers with a good grasp of the nexus between CEs and BIM and paving the path toward further research, strategies and technological solutions to decrease CEs of B&I sectors and their impacts on the climate change.
Building information modeling (BIM) in green buildings: a state-of-the-art bibliometric review

Abstract:Purpose This study evaluates the knowledge structure of building information modeling (BIM) in green buildings. Buildings are one of the main contributors to carbon emissions, and implementing BIM in green buildings is seen as an indispensable approach to mitigate environmental and climate change issues. Design/methodology/approach Through a bibliometric analysis, 297 publications retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) were analyzed to explore their intellectual structure. Findings Bibliographic coupling analysis produced four clusters on current and emerging trends, while co-word analysis produced four clusters on future BIM and green building trends. Current and emerging trends revolve around BIM adoption in green and existing buildings, life cycle analysis (LCA) and sustainable rating tools. Future trends related to BIM and performance analysis and optimization, the BIM framework for green building design and construction, overcoming barriers and maximizing benefits in BIM adoption. Research limitations/implications The implications of this study are relevant to all BIM and green building stakeholders, including developers, engineers, architects, occupants, tenants and the whole community. Originality/value This study examines the crucial integration of BIM and green building within the more extensive construction and building field scope.
Research on Database Construction and Calculation of Building Carbon Emissions Based on BIM General Data Framework

Abstract:China is entering a new era characterized by carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and the construction industry, which accounts for a high proportion of social carbon emissions, urgently needs a method to calculate and predict building carbon emissions in advance. This study proposes a method for calculating the life cycle carbon emissions (LCCEs) of buildings based on building information modeling (BIM) technology. The method uses a BIM universal data framework to establish a building carbon emission calculation model and a building carbon emission factor database instance. Taking prefabricated construction projects as an example, it is compared with the traditional calculation method. The results show that the method can more accurately predict building carbon emissions and provide methods and a basis for the construction industry to control carbon emissions in advance.

Abstract:Prefabrication has gained its popularity in countries including China due to its various advantages such as quality control, waste reduction, onsite and offsite parallel coordination, and so on. It has also been recognized as a key strategy to reduce construction-induced carbon emissions. However, there is limited research to examine carbon emission reduction in prefabrication by using the advanced technological artefacts, e.g., building information modeling (BIM), emerging from the technology sphere. As a digital representation of a facility, BIM provides a cyber platform based on which many assessment and simulation works can be performed without having to construct the physical facility. This paper aims to develop a BIM-based approach to measuring carbon emission reduction during the materialization stage of a prefabricated building project. Findings from the study indicate that BIM is an efficient and effective method for measuring carbon emissions from the construction of new buildings and that prefabrication reduces carbon emissions when compared with conventional construction methods. The research contributes to the body of knowledge relating to the reduction of carbon emissions through prefabrication. This is pertinent to contractors, homebuyers and governments who are constantly seeking ways to achieve a circular economy.

Abstract:In recent decades, the carbon emissions from building structures have posed a huge threat to the environment and to some extent contributed to global warming. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the most commonly used carbon emission assessment technique. However, this is a challenging task as the amount of data for a single material is enormous and difficult to process. A new method utilizing the latest computer technology has been proposed. This paper uses Building Information Model (BIM) and Revit software to establish a three-dimensional model of the structure. BIM can export and imply material information based on other platforms. This makes it possible to link BIM tools with lifecycle assessment by defining environmental data for each unit in the model. The entire process is divided into six stages. This article focuses on the calculation of carbon emissions during the construction phase and introduces a method that helps with early structural decision-making. Through case studies of existing buildings, the quantity of materials used in the building was analyzed, and the relationship between pre construction carbon emission factors and material quantity was solved.

Abstract:Transforming the construction sector is key to reaching net-zero, and many stakeholders expect its decarbonization through digitalization. But no quantified evidence has been brought to date. We propose the first environmental quantification of the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction sector. Specifically, the direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a monofunctional BIM to plan road maintenance, a Pavement Management System (PMS), are evaluated using field data from France. The related carbon footprints are calculated following a life cycle approach, using different sources of data, including ecoinvent v3.6, and the IPCC 2013 GWP 100a characterization factors. Three design-build-maintain pavement alternatives are compared: scenario 1 relates to a massive design and surface maintenance, scenario 2 to a progressive design and pre-planned structural maintenance, and scenario 3 to a progressive design and tailored structural maintenance supported by the PMS. First, results show negligible direct emissions due to the PMS existence: 0.02% of the life cycle emissions of scenario 3. Second, complementary sensitivity analyses show that using a PMS is climate-positive over the life cycle when pavement subgrade bearing capacity improves over time, and climate-neutral otherwise. The GHG emissions savings using BIM can reach up to 30% of the life cycle emissions compared to other scenarios, and 65% when restraining the scope to maintenance and rehabilitation and excluding original pavement construction. Third, the neutral effect of BIM in case of a deterioration of the bearing capacity of the subgrade may be explained by design practices and safety margins, that could be enhanced using BIM. Fourth, the decarbonization potential of a multifunctional BIM is discussed, and research perspectives are presented.

Abstract:The strength of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in achieving sustainable buildings is well recognized by the global construction industry. However, current understanding of the state-of-the-art green BIM research is still limited. In particular, a focus study on how BIM contribute to green building design through building performance analysis (BPA) is not available. This paper aims to provide systematic and comprehensive insights on current trends and future potentials of green BIM research by analyzing the existing literature with their research features (i.e. research backgrounds, goals, methods and outputs). In total, 80 publications have been collected, analyzed and discussed. The results show that among ten main BPA types, energy & thermal analysis, green building rating analysis, and cost and benefit analysis are the most studied. However, wind & ventilation analysis, acoustic analysis, and water efficiency analysis receive little attention. Moreover, more research focusing on integrated design analysis should be carried out for optimal design outcome. In addition, most of the collected literature research on the capability of data integration and analysis of green BIM tools, while their capability of visualization and documentation has limited examination. Furthermore, most researchers utilized one main software package while utilization of information exchange formats (IEF) is limited. To increase interoperability of green BIM tools, how different BIM authoring tools and IEFs can be utilized for BPA requires further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Given the ability of a Building Information Model (BIM) to serve as a multi-disciplinary data repository, this paper seeks to explore and exploit the sustainability value of Building Information Modelling/models in delivering buildings that require less energy for their operation, emit less CO 2 and at the same time provide a comfortable living environment for their occupants. This objective was achieved by a critical and extensive review of the literature covering: (1) building energy consumption, (2) building energy performance and analysis, and (3) building information modeling and energy assessment. The literature cited in this paper showed that linking an energy analysis tool with a BIM model helped project design teams to predict and create optimized energy consumption. To validate this finding, an in-depth analysis was carried out on a completed BIM integrated construction project using the Arboleda Project in the Dominican Republic. The findings showed that the BIM-based energy analysis helped the design team achieve the world’s first 103% positive energy building. From the research findings, the paper concludes that linking an energy analysis tool with a BIM model helps to expedite the energy analysis process, provide more detailed and accurate results as well as deliver energy-efficient buildings. The study further recommends that the adoption of a level 2 BIM and the integration of BIM in energy optimization analyse should be made compulsory for all projects irrespective of the method of procurement (government-funded or otherwise) or its size.

Abstract:With the development of engineering technology, building information modeling (BIM) has attracted more and more attention and has been studied by many experts on building energy consumption in recent years. It is necessary to analyze and forecast the application trend and prospect of BIM technology in building energy consumption. Based on 377 articles published in the WOS database, this study adopts the technique of combining scientometrics and bibliometrics to obtain relevant research hotspots and quantitative analysis results. The findings demonstrate that the building energy consumption field has made extensive use of BIM technology. However, there are still some limitations that can be improved, and the use of BIM technology in construction renovation projects should be emphasized. This study can help readers better understand the application status of BIM technology and its trajectory of development with regard to building energy consumption, providing a valuable reference for future research.

Abstract:To combat climate change and meet energy conservation and emission reduction goals, the building sector must adopt low-carbon technologies and low-carbon management methods. To systematically explore existing research areas and track future research trends of carbon emission in the construction stage (CECS), this study conducts a bibliometric and content analysis of CECS studies. 563 relevant publications published between 2000 and 2022 are examined and analyzed using data from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database. The findings reveal that studies of CECS have evolved through three stages: preliminary exploratory period, stable development period, and rapid development period. In addition, the literature co-citation network and content analysis classify the 13 found co-citation clusters into four knowledge domains: sources definition, data statistics, assessment methods, and carbon reduction strategies. Finally, a knowledge map of CECS studies is presented, outlining significant aspects of research, existing gaps in knowledge, and directions for future study. This work will make it easier for academics and professionals to pinpoint promising areas of study, fill in knowledge gaps, and broaden the scope of existing research on CECS.

Abstract:Nowadays, the advancement of technologies in the building industry may give a significant impact to the environment. The building sector contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions which may harm the environment and the high consumption of energy required high demand in burning the fossil fuel. These may effects the environment where, the carbon dioxide (CO2) has been significantly released to the atmosphere and harm the environment which may lead to global warming. In order to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, there is a need to develop a solution which may account these environmental problems. Conserving the energy of the building is one of the strategies to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions to the environment. Recently, linking the building information modelling (BIM) to analyse the energy performance of the building has been spread widely. BIM has been recognized as a suitable tool to perform a building analysis in the early design stage which helps to model the energy use, flow of thermal, patterns of lighting and many more sustainable measures. BIM is believed able to help a designer to choose the best building design due to its concept of parametric change that assist the AEC industry to implement the sustainable design in an effective way and significantly improve the energy efficiency of building.

Abstract:Sustainable development, which has become the priority study of architectural design, is receiving increasing attention with global climate change. At the same time, the building industry is urgently changing towards intelligent and digitalized tendencies. As a result, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT) make crucial contributions to the transforming process. However, there is little knowledge of the integration of BIM–IoT in sustainable building from a macro perspective. Moreover, most existing research adopts a literature review method and lacks objective quantitative analysis. Few papers use bibliometric analysis to study the respective BIM and IoT research fields. Furthermore, few studies use Citespace software tools to analyze the integrated application of BIM–IoT. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the research frontiers and knowledge structure in BIM–IoT integration and the relationship between BIM-IoT and sustainable building and explore the research hotspots, trends, and future research directions. A quick and objective method was proposed to understand the research status of these new and rapidly developing fields. This paper uses topic search in the web of science core collection to obtain relevant literature and then uses Citespace for bibliometric analysis based on the literature review. Controlled terms and subject terms statistics from the Engineering Index core database search results are also used to briefly examine the fields' research frontiers and hotspots as obtained from Citespace. The results show that: (1) The research on BIM–IoT integration focuses on building intelligence with BIM as the basis of application, and research on BIM–IoT integration within the field of sustainable building is currently focused on the first three phases of the life cycle. (2) The development of sustainable buildings needs to be considered on its human and social dimensions. BIM provides a platform for sharing information and communication among stakeholders involved in the building's entire life cycle. At the same time, IoT allows occupants to better participate in buildings' sustainable design and decision making. (3) In the future, more emerging technologies such as cloud computing and big data are required to better promote sustainable buildings and thus realize the construction of sustainable smart cities. At the same time, researchers should also pay attention to the sustainable transformation of existing buildings.

Abstract:In order to calculate the carbon emissions in the construction process to achieve low-carbon buildings and low-carbon construction, the author puts forward the calculation and evaluation of building thermal energy consumption and carbon emissions based on building information modeling (BIM) technology. The author first proposed the important value and application of BIM technology in energy consumption evaluation of green buildings, taking a gymnasium as an example, a carbon emission accounting system for building construction and installation process is established based on BIM technology, and the carbon emissions in building construction and installation process are calculated and analyzed. The results show that the carbon emission during the construction and installation of a gymnasium is 766300 tons, of which the carbon emission caused by building materials is 737200 tons, the carbon emission caused by mechanical equipment is 4500 tons, and that caused by office and living is 34500 tons, accounting for 94.90%, 0.59%, and 4.51%, respectively. In conclusion through data analysis, determine the largest carbon emission source in the construction process, and then propose targeted carbon emission reduction measures in the construction process of the construction industry.

Abstract:The development of prefabricated concrete (PC) buildings can potentially reduce the consumption of resources and energy, and meet the requirements of low carbon and environmental protection in the construction industry. Therefore, this study aims to investigate PC buildings and their carbon footprint in the materialization phase. Based on databases from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Chinese Life Cycle Database (CLCD), a database of carbon emission factors was compiled. A carbon footprint calculation model for the materialization phase of PC buildings was established combining with BIM technology. The obtained results indicate that the carbon footprint per unit area of PC construction projects is significantly lower than that of other building types. The carbon footprint of the production phase accounts for more than 90% of the total, and the carbon footprint per unit area of the transportation phase and the construction and installation phase are equivalent. The carbon emission of a building material on its degree of influence is ranked as cement, steel, concrete and wire. In addition, the results can also provide a theoretical support for the formulation of regulations and emission reduction policies based on building energy conservation and carbon emission reduction.

Abstract:Despite green building and BIM technology being hot spots in the construction industry, most research remains at the technical level. Leading to exploring the fundamental driving reason and mechanism of BIM for green buildings is still lacking. This paper explored BIM’s impact mechanism and driving path on green buildings from the management’s perspective to fill this gap. Based on a literature review, 18 expert interviews, and three case studies of green buildings, the influence mechanism was analysed via a qualitative method (ISM). Then, the importance of driving factors was evaluated via quantitative analysis (ANP). Specifically, this study probed the driving path by combining qualitative and quantitative analysis (ISM-ANP). The research findings show that the driving force of BIM for green buildings comes from the fundamental factor layer and is transferred to the intermediate and direct factors layer. The critical driving path of BIM for green building is to promote the visualization of building information, collaborative management, and expand real estate investment through the guidance of policies and standards. Based on research results, this paper puts forward five suggestions: 1) Improving the policy and standard system; 2) Striving to research native software; 3) Adopting an informatization project management mode; 4) Accelerating the construction and improvement of the green building industry chain; 5) Promoting government enterprise cooperation. These results may benefit not only the coupling and coordination of the two but also the construction industry’s green transformation and high-quality development.

Abstract:As the global climate continues to change, lowering carbon emissions of public buildings (CEPB) is essential for reducing carbon emissions from the construction sector. Exploring the current status of the field is crucial to improving the effort to reduce CEPB. CiteSpace and VOSviewer are used in this research to visualize the literature on CEPB from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2002 to 2022, including an overview, collaborations, and keywords, as well as references. The paper then analyzes and reviews the research processes of CEPB in conjunction with the visualization results and the collation of information from the literature. The results show that the current research hotspots include (1) theoretical research and simulation modeling, (2) energy systems, (3) materials, (4) public building retrofitting, (5) the main factors that contribute to the reduction in CEPB. Architectural features and structures and digital technology are the frontiers of research in the field of CEPB. In general, there is still sufficient space to develop in the field. These findings intuitively encapsulate the valuable information and inherent value of a significant body of literature, which can help researchers quickly understand the field and provide some references.

Abstract:With the continuous increase in the number of buildings, the phenomenon of excessively high energy consumption becomes more and more serious. It is particularly important to reduce the energy consumption during the operation of the whole life cycle of the building. Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology is based on the relevant parameters of construction projects, and uses digital information simulation to establish building information models. It is one of the technical means of building energy consumption analysis and energy saving management, that can be explained as the main reason for stakeholders to guide energy and efficiency changes of the driving factor in buildings. We start co-occurrence statistics and type analysis based on the co-occurrence context analysis, construct the co-occurrence information that affects the values and barriers combination of BIM implementation for smart building energy and efficiency, and chose the expert database of the Green Construction and Intelligent Building Branch (GCIBB) of China Construction Association, that obtained 104 samples through modified snowball sampling, using exploratory factor analysis with factor load linear functions, and combined factor variance contribution rate weights. We created index function of the values and barriers combination of BIM implementation in smart building energy and efficiency, and classified and calculated the comprehensive score of each factor according to the ranking evaluation index, and mapped its practical significance. The results show that the 18 combined evaluation indicators proposed in this paper are suitable for evaluating the three elements of benefit, efficiency and quality of smart buildings, and can achieve continuous optimization of building energy consumption. The constructed multi-factor combination evaluation model, the extracted common factor variance cumulative contribution rate is greater than 80%.

Developing a BIM-based Methodology Framework for Sustainability Analysis of Low Carbon High-rise Buildings

Abstract:In high-density high-rise cities such as Hong Kong, buildings account for nearly 90% of energy consumption and 61% of carbon emissions. Therefore, it is important to study the design of buildings, especially high-rise buildings, to achieve lower carbon emissions in the city. The carbon emissions of a building consist of embodied carbon from the production of construction materials and operational carbon from energy consumption during daily operation (e.g., air-conditioning and lighting). An integrated analysis of both types of carbon emissions can strengthen the design of low carbon buildings, but most of the previous studies concentrated mainly on either embodied or operational carbon. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to develop a holistic methodology framework considering both embodied and operational carbon, in order to enhance the sustainable design of low carbon high-rise buildings. The framework will be based on the building information modeling (BIM) technology because BIM can be integrated with simulation systems and digital models of different disciplines, thereby enabling a holistic design and assessment of low carbon buildings. Structural analysis program is first coupled with BIM to validate the structural performance of a building design. The amounts of construction materials and embodied carbon are then quantified by a BIM-based program using the Dynamo programming interface. Operational carbon is quantified by energy simulation software based on the green building extensible Markup Language (gbXML) file from BIM. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will be applied to analyze the ambient wind effect on indoor temperature and operational carbon. The BIM-based framework serves as a decision support tool to compare and explore more environmentally-sustainable design options to help reduce the carbon emissions in buildings.

Abstract:In the low-carbon construction target system, low-carbon buildings play a crucial role in achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions. As China's urbanization development continues to deepen, communities have become the primary living environment for both urban and rural residents. Consequently, research on building carbon emissions has shifted from individual buildings to encompassing low-carbon community building facilities. Against the backdrop of digital intelligence and new quality productivity development, promoting the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology for low-carbon transformation in community buildings can effectively contribute to China's low-carbon goals. The utilization of BIM technology enhances planning and construction efficiency across various types of communities while minimizing rework and energy consumption. Furthermore, applying BIM technology to equipment and materials management enables better control over carbon emissions during building operation and maintenance stages, thereby fostering harmonious development between urban energy consumption and the community’s ecological environment.

Abstract:The integrated application of building information modeling (BIM) and big data (BD) has received widespread attention, and has been involved in smart construction sites, construction project management, and construction project budgeting. Nevertheless, research on the integrated implementation of BIM and BD in China mainly concentrates on a project stage or profession, the exploration of technology integration mostly focuses on the theoretical level, and the research distribution is scattered. As such, the intention of this paper is to reveal the research history of BIM and BD in China, as well as to study the research methodologies and research fields for a more thorough knowledge of the BIM and BD research and development status in the Chinese construction sector, which adopts a mixed research method that uses a quantitative research via two analytical software tools, i.e., CiteSpace version of 6.1.R6 and the Statistical Analysis Toolkit on line edition for Informetrics software packages, to conduct a macro bibliometric analysis on BIM and BD research in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, and provides a follow-up micro qualitative research with content analysis. To ensure the comprehensiveness of the research, the core articles of the topic in the web of science database have been sorted out and analyzed for fully understanding the development of BIM and BD in the field of Chinese construction, resulting in identifying the current research hotspots and trends in China. The results suggest that the popular research keywords on BIM and BD in China since the year 2015 have mainly been focused on informatization, the internet of things, and rail transportation. Three fruitful research themes in BIM and BD research in China have been identified, including smart construction, smart operation, and bridge informatization.
