Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a green, environmentally friendly, and efficient technique for sample pre-treatment. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of porous materials formed by covalent bonds, have gained prominence owing to their remarkable attributes, including large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and robust thermal/chemical stability. These characteristics have made COFs highly appealing as potential coatings for SPME fiber over the past decades. In this review, various methods used to prepare SPME coatings based on COFs are presented. These methods encompass physical adhesion, sol-gel processes, in situ growth, and chemical cross-linking strategies. In addition, the applications of COF-based SPME coating fibers for the preconcentration of various targets in environmental, food, and biological samples are summarized. Moreover, not only their advantages but also the challenges they pose in practical applications are highlighted. By shedding light on these aspects, this review aims to contribute to the continued development and utilization of COF materials in the field of sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Functional porous carbon materials are at the forefront of current research due to their exceptional properties, making them highly sought after for various applications, including energy storage/conversion, sensing, adsorption, and catalysis. One crucial factor in producing carbon materials with specific uses and optimized functions is the selection of appropriate carbon precursors. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as game-changing precursors due to their adaptable molecular design and adjustable structures. As a result, they exhibit tremendous potential for the development of advanced carbon materials. In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in COF-derived carbon materials, and we try to comprehensively cover COF-derived carbon materials from their synthetic methods to specific applications. Focusing on the relationship between structure and properties in COF-derived carbon materials, mechanism during carbonization, morphology control strategies, and properties modulation approaches are highlighted, followed by their representative applications in the last 10 years. Moreover, despite the significant advances achieved to date, COF-derived carbon materials still suffer from some limitations. Thus, proposals on how to improve COF-derived carbon materials’ performance are also discussed, as well as future challenges and perspectives, aiming to provide concise yet informative guidelines for choosing suitable carbon materials for particular applications.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:Sample preparation maintains a key bottleneck in the whole analytical procedure. Solid‐phase sorbents (SPSs) have garnered increasing attention in sample preparation research due to their crucial roles in achieving high clean‐up and enrichment efficiency in the analysis of trace targets present in complex matrices. Novel nanoscale materials with improved characteristics have garnered considerable interest across different scientific disciplines due to the limited capabilities of traditional bulk‐scale materials. The purpose of this review is to offer a thorough summary of the latest developments and uses of SPSs in preparing samples for chromatographic analysis, focusing on the years 2020–2024. The techniques for preparing SPSs are examined, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), and metallic nanomaterials (MNs). Examining the pros and cons of different extraction methods, including solid‐phase extraction (SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), flow‐based SPE (FBA‐SPE), solid‐phase microextraction (SPME), stir‐bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), and dispersive SPE (DSPE), is the main focus. Furthermore, this article presents the utilization of SPE technology for isolating common contaminants in various environmental, biological, and food specimens. We highlight the persistent challenges in SPSs and anticipate future advancements and applications of novel SPSs.

Abstract:In vivo solid phase microextraction (in vivo SPME) has been regarded as a promising high-throughput sample preparation technique for bioanalysis fields in recent years due to its simplicity, great sensitivity and low invasiveness. Therefore, as the key driving force of the development of this technique, many important advances have been also made in biocompatible coating materials. In view of this, this review here focused on various types of materials that are currently popular as in vivo SPME coating for both the targeted and untargeted analysis in living system. The main performance of each exemplary material and its current application as an in vivo SPME extraction phase were summarized in detail. As was shown, the development and the improvement of coating materials make in vivo SPME display a great potential for the targeted and untargeted screening of small molecules in living organisms. Finally, it was emphasized that the implementation of in vivo SPME in the fields of bioanalysis should be more concerned as long as suitable coating materials are available.

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been widely used in analysis of trace organic contaminants in environmental samples. Stable, efficient, and selective fiber coating is the key to the development of SPME technique. In this study, an in situ fabricated porous carbon coating that derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was introduced for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The carbon coating (denoted as MOF-74-C) was prepared by the direct carbonization of a MOF-74 coating that was in situ grown on stainless steel wire, which was explored for the extraction of odorous organic contaminants for the first time. MOF-74-C coated fiber showed high extraction efficiency (1.1–16.0 times larger than commercial fibers for most tested analytes under the same extraction conditions), as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Furthermore, it can selectively extract the analytes with the simultaneous exclusion of coexisting dissolved organic matter due to the molecular sieve effect invoked by the well-defined micropores. The method based on MOF-74-C coating for analysis of odorants afforded wide linear ranges (more than two orders of magnitude), low detection limits (below the odor threshold concentrations), good intra- and inter-day accuracies (90.1–107.3%) and precisions (relative standard deviations/RSDs below 9.4%) and satisfactory reproducibility (RSDs below 8.7%). Finally, the MOF-74-C coated fiber was successfully applied for the SPME analysis of odorants in real water samples. These results highlight the great potential of in situ fabricated porous carbons derived from MOFs for SPME applications.

Abstract:Coating is considered to be the key element in solid phase microextraction（SPME） technique as it has been widely used in sample pretreatment.However,currently the commercially available fibers based on nonselective sorbent are lack of selectivity in the extraction and easy to be interfered by environmental matrix.Therefore,they are not suitable for the analysis of organic contaminants in complex environmental matrix.As a kind of material which have strong molecular recognition ability and high specific selectivity,molecularly imprinted polymers can greatly improve the separation capability of microextraction technique and expand the application scope of SPME when used as the coating materials of SPME,which has made it become one of research hotspots of SPME selective coatings.The concept,basic principle and method of molecularly imprinted technique,were introduced systematically,and the recent progress of molecularly imprinted technique coupled with solid phase microextraction,including the type of equipment of molecularly imprinted solid phase microextraction and the reaserch method,were also reviewed in this paper.Future research trends of molecularly imprinted solid phase microextraction（MISPME） were emphasized in the end of this paper.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials (PCMs) play a pivotal role in diverse applications, such as energy storage, adsorption, catalysis, environmental remediation, and microwave adsorption. The selection of carbon precursors, in particular, is crucial for tailoring porous structures with specific functionalities. Biomass, with its rich carbon feedstock, abundant availability, renewability, and versatile structures, has emerged as a promising precursor for porous carbon material synthesis. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances in biomass-derived porous carbon materials (BPCMs) encompassing synthetic strategy, morphology, structural composition, and multiple applications. We first review synthetic approaches aiming at regulating porosity, followed by morphological and composition features of BPCMs, with a special emphasis on elucidating the dimensional clarification and heteroatom doping effects. The discussion then extends to the wide-ranging applications of BPCMs, covering energy-related applications and CO 2 adsorption to environmental remediation. Finally, the review outlines the existing challenges and prospects in the field. In summary, this review systematically describes BPCMs and provides valuable guidance for researchers to select and synthesize BPCMs that meet specific functional requirements.

Roles of histidine residues in tobacco acetolactate synthase.

Abstract:Acetolactate synthase (ALS) catalyzes the first common step in the biosynthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine in plants and microorganisms. ALS is the target of several structurally diverse classes of herbicides, including sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, and triazolopyrimidines. The roles of three well-conserved histidine residues (H351, H392, and H487) in tobacco ALS were determined using site-directed mutagenesis. Both H487F and H487L mutations abolished the enzymatic activity as well as the binding affinity for the cofactor FAD. Nevertheless, the mutation of H487F did not affect the secondary structure of the ALS. The K(m) values of H351M, H351Q, and H351F are approximately 18-, 60-, and fivefold higher than that of the wild-type ALS, respectively. Moreover, the K(c) value of H351Q for FAD is about 137-fold higher than that of wALS. Mutants H351M and H351Q showed very strong resistance to Londax (a sulfonylurea) and Cadre (an imidazolinone), whereas mutant H351F was weakly resistant to them. However, the secondary structures of mutants H351M and H351Q appeared to be different from that of wALS. The mutation of H392M did not have any significant effect on the kinetic parameters nor the resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides. These results suggest that the His487 residue is located at the active site of the enzyme and is likely involved in the binding of cofactor FAD in tobacco ALS. Mutational analyses of the His351 residue imply that the active site of the ALS is probably close to its binding site of the herbicides, Londax and Cadre.
Preparation and Characteristics of New Coating for Solid-Phase Microextraction.

Abstract:Poly (methylphenylvinylsiloxane) (PMPVS) coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was first prepared by using sol-gel approach and cross-linking of free radical initiation. The extraction properties of the novel coating for aromatic compounds were investigated using a self-made SPME device coupled with a gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The coating provided high surface areas and allowed high extraction efficiency. Compared with some commercial SPME stationary phases, the new phase showed better selectivity and sensitivity toward aromatic compounds. Furthermore, PMPVS coating showed good thermal stability and longer lifetime.

Abstract:Sample pretreatment is an important prerequisite for analyzing complex samples due to the low concentration of targets and numerous interferences in sample matrix. As a group of emerging absorbents, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived porous carbons (MPCs), obtained by high-temperature pyrolysis of MOFs, have been brought into stage recently due to their intrinsic advantages such as high porosity, permanent nanoscale cavities and open channels. The morphology of the original MOF precursor is well maintained after calcination produces. Furthermore, by directly calcinating MOFs comprised of magnetic metal centers (Co, Fe, Ni), magnetic porous carbon with excellent magnetism and separation efficiency can be fabricated. The uniformly distributed magnetic metal nanoparticles in the carbon matrix is helpful to reduce the agglomeration problem of magnetic nanoparticles and the porosity of carbon materials inherited from MOFs is beneficial to evaluate the adsorptive property. So MPCs has been widely used in sample preparation of environmental, biological samples and food matrices. In this review, we summarize the performances and different process for the preparation of MPCs. Moreover, this review mainly focuses on providing a detailed discussion about the application of MPCs for extracting analytes from complex matrix in different sample pretreatment modes such as solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction. In addition, the efforts recently on the automation of magnetic solid phase extraction processes by means of MPCs are also described.

This is partly owing to the development of SPME coatings. One of the key factors affecting the extraction performances, such as the sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility, is the properties of the coatings on SPME fibers. This paper classifies the materials used as SPME coatings and introduces some common preparation techniques of SPME coating in detail, such as sol-gel technique, electrochemical polymerization technique, particle direct pasting technique, restricted access matrix SPME technique, and molecularly imprinted SPME technique.

Abstract:Detection of biomacromolecules from various complex matrices is significant because of their functions in numerous biological processes, and efficient extraction before analysis is highly required due to the severe interference from sample matrices. So far, solid phase extraction (SPE) is still one of the most effective approaches to enrich biomacromolecules. Among all solid-phase sorbents in biomacromolecule extraction, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stand out by virtue of their ultrahigh specific surface area, well-defined pore structure, tunable chemistry and efficient size exclusion effect etc. In this review, we provide an updated and essential summary about applications of MOFs as advanced solid sorbents in biomacromolecule extraction. Moreover, three major trends including improvement of water stability, enhancement of extraction selectivity, and development of on-line extraction are also presented to provide new perspectives in MOF-based sample preparation for better advancement.
Biochar nanosphere- and covalent organic framework nanosphere-functionalized titanium dioxide nanorod arrays on carbon fibers for solid-phase microextraction of organic pollutants

Abstract:To improve the extraction efficiency of carbon fibers (CFs) toward organic pollutants, TiO2 nanorod arrays (NARs) were grown in situ on CFs. Subsequently, biochar nanospheres and covalent organic framework nanospheres were separately introduced to functionalize the NARs. A sequence of materials was produced by regulating the reactant concentrations and characterized using a scanning electron microscope, an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer, a Raman spectrometer, and a specific surface area analyzer. The materials were then deposited into separate poly(etheretherketone) tubes for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME). These tubes were evaluated with different types of organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), estrogens, bisphenols, and phthalate esters) using a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and IT-SPME, and they exhibited diverse extraction performance. The extraction mechanism of each material is carefully discussed, and the structure–performance relationship is also summarized based on the chemical structures and extraction properties of the materials. The most efficient extraction materials for different analytes were discovered and used to develop analytical methods. Three online methods were used to sensitively detect PAHs, estrogens, and bisphenols in real water samples, respectively. Satisfactory results were obtained, including enrichment factors up to 6784, detection limits as low as 0.001 μg L−1, linear ranges of 0.003–15.0 μg L−1, and relative standard deviations ranging from 0.2% to 15.2%. The results indicate that these methods have some advantages over previous material-based methods.

Abstract:The solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique has been widely applied in the detection of trace compounds in food, environment, and medicine due to its advantages of easy quantification, simple operation, and greenness. Herein, a templating strategy with SiO 2 nanofibers (SiO 2 NFs) is reported to synthesize hierarchical covalent organic framework hollow nanofibers (COF HNFs)-coated stainless steel fiber for SPME application with dramatically enhanced enrichment performance for trace analytes. The construction of hierarchical porosity inside the microextraction coatings can not only increase the specific surface area of COF extraction materials for obtaining more abundant adsorption sites but also greatly improve the accessibility of internal COF micropores. Moreover, the thicknesses of the microextraction COF coatings can be facilely tailored by adjusting the amount of SiO 2 NFs pre-assembled on the SPME fibers. On the headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of antimicrobial residues, the developed COF TpBD-Me 2 HNFs-12 fibers achieve enrichment factors of 2026 and 1823 for thymol and carvacrol respectively, which are significantly higher than those obtained from the counterpart COF TpBD-Me 2 -bonded fiber (8.5–8.2 times) and commercial CAR/PDMS fiber (3.3–4.4 times). Furthermore, the developed method was demonstrated to have wide linearity (0.1–50 μg L -1 ), low limits of detection (0.010 μg L -1 ), good thermal stability and excellent reusability (>60 recycles), demonstrating great application potential in the extraction of trace organic pollutants. The strategy developed in this work is applicable to preparing a variety of topological COF (e.g., TpBD, TpPa-1) HNFs-bonded fibers.

Abstract:In recent years, some new and sensitive analytical instruments have been invented or existing instruments have been improved, which have resulted in many advanced achievements. However, sample pre-treatment techniques still play important and irreplaceable roles in the analysis of pollutants. Among the developed sample pre-treatment techniques, solid phase extraction is the most often used method and has been widely applied worldwide. In solid phase extraction, adsorbent is the key part to achieve high sensitivity and enrichment efficiency, which is the hot topic in analytical and environmental fields in recent years. In order to deeply understand the prospect of solid phase extraction, this review summarises the recent advances of adsorbents including ion imprinting materials, magnetic materials, core-shell materials, mesoporous materials, carbon nanotubes, TiO2 nanotube arrays and some other new materials.

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been widely proposed for the extraction, clean-up, and preconcentration of analytes of environmental concern. Enrichment capabilities, preconcentration efficiency, sample throughput, and selectivity in extracting target compounds greatly depend on the materials used as SPME coatings. Supramolecular materials have emerged as promising porous coatings to be used for the extraction of target compounds due to their unique selectivity, three-dimensional framework, flexible design, and possibility to promote the interaction between the analytes and the coating by means of multiple oriented functional groups. The present review will cover the state of the art of the last 5 years related to SPME coatings based on metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and supramolecular macrocycles used for environmental applications.

Abstract:Sample pretreatment is essential for analysis of complicated real samples due to their complex matrices and low analyte concentrations. Among all sample pretreatment methods, solid–phase extraction is arguably the most frequently used one. However, the majority of available solid‐phase extraction adsorbents suffer from limited selectivity. Molecularly imprinted polymers are a type of tailor–made artificial antibodies and receptors with specific recognition sites for target molecules. Using molecularly imprinted polymers instead of conventional adsorbents can greatly improve the selectivity of solid‐phase extraction, and therefore molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction has been widely applied to separation, clean up and/or preconcentration of target analytes in various kinds of real samples. In this article, after a brief introduction, the recent developments and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction for determination of different analytes in complicated real samples during the 2015–2020 are reviewed systematically, including the solid‐phase extraction modes, molecularly imprinted adsorbent types and their preparations, and the practical applications of solid‐phase extraction to various real samples (environmental, food, biological and pharmaceutical samples). Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction for real sample analysis are discussed.This article is protected by copyright.
