Abstract:The detection and classification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of great significance in atmospheric environment monitoring and have garnered extensive attention in recent decades. This study proposes a virtual sensor array (VSA) for VOC detection and classification fabricating a single-chip high-Q-factor film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) functionalized with MIL-101(Cr) thin film, known for its porous crystal structure and high specific surface area. The sensing performance of five different VOCs was evaluated to characterize the VOCs, achieving high detection accuracy calibrated with the Langmuir adsorption model. The FBAR's frequency response was utilized to determine the sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD), yielding sensitivity and LOD of 85.45 Hz/ppm and 51 ppm, respectively, for isopropanol. The identification and classification capabilities of the proposed VSA for VOCs and their mixtures were assessed using statistical methods and machine learning algorithms, realizing classification accuracies of 100 % for pure VOCs and 94.6 % for mixtures. The developed VSA demonstrates superior performances in VOC detection and classification, with potential applications across various domains.

Abstract:Abstract Volatile organic compounds are released by different sources causing air pollution. Moreover, some of these carbon-based organic chemicals are considered as biomarkers in the exhaled breath of individuals and can be used to identify various kinds of diseases. Hence, the increasing demand to control air quality and human health has promoted the development of monitoring systems based on high-performance gas sensing structures. This review highlights the achievements in sensing technologies for the detection of volatile organic compounds. Particularly, chemiresistive gas sensors and detection systems based on the terahertz spectroscopy method are outlined. The progress in research studies is discussed and the potential of both techniques is evaluated considering the current challenges. Afterward, a brief summary is also provided along with the advances and issues for future investigations and the manufacturing of highly sensitive and selective monitoring systems.

Abstract:This paper uses a unique data set covering 12 national systems to document the current state of electronic purse projects in Europe. Specifically, it presents and compares rates of penetration and use, and analyses their evolution over time. While one or two EPs perform significantly better than the others, retailer acceptance and consumer uptake invariably fall short of expectations. This does not bode well for the use of EPs on the Internet, and particularly since the virtual world presents a number of additional hurdles. On the other hand, it may also present additional opportunities.

Abstract:Photon ionization mass spectrometry (PI-MS) is a widely used technique for the online detection of trace substances in complex matrices. In this work, a new high-pressure photon ionization (HPPI) ion source based on a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) Kr lamp was developed for time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). The detection sensitivity was improved by elevating the ion source pressure to about 700 Pa. A radio frequency (RF)-only quadrupole was employed as the ion guide system following the HPPI source to achieve high ion transmission efficiency. In-source collision induced dissociation (CID) was conducted for accurate chemical identification by varying the voltage between the ion source and the ion guide. The high humidity of the breath air can promote the detection of some compounds with higher ionization potentials (IPs) that could not be well detected by single photon ionization (SPI) at low pressure. Under 100% relative humidity (37 °C), the limits of detection down to 0.015 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were obtained. This HPPI-TOFMS system was preliminarily applied for online investigations of the exhaled breath from both healthy nonsmoker and smoker subjects, demonstrating its analytical capacity for complicated gases analysis. Subsequently, several frequently reported VOCs in the breath of healthy volunteers, i.e., acetone, isoprene, 2-butanone, ethanol, acetic acid, and isopropanol, were successfully identified and quantified.

Abstract:Human exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and their presence in indoor and working environments is recognized as a serious health risk, causing impairment of varying severity. Different detecting systems able to monitor VOCs are available in the market, however they have significant limitations for both sensitivity and chemical discrimination capability. During the last years we studied systematically the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy as an alternative, powerful tool for quantifying VOCs in air. We calibrated the method for a set of compounds (styrene, acetone, ethanol and isopropanol) by using both laboratory and portable infrared spectrometers. The aim was to develop a new, real time and highly sensitive sensor system for VOCs monitoring. In this paper, we improve the setup performance testing the feasibility of using a multipass cell with the aim of extending the sensitivity of this sensor system down to the part per milion (ppb) level. Considering that multipass cells are now available also for portable instruments, this study opens the road for the design of new high-resolution devices for environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The broadband terahertz wave, with its correspondence to the fingerprint spectra of gas molecules and relatively high transmittance through smoke, aerosol, and combustion environments, bears great potential for gas detection and combustion diagnostics. While access to the rotational spectral fingerprints in the terahertz region provides opportunities for species-selective diagnostics with minimized background and cross interference, few studies have been devoted to direct, quantitative, simultaneous analysis of multiple components exploiting the terahertz region. In this work, we achieve quantitative measurements of CO, NH3 and H2O gas concentrations at standard temperature and pressure over a bandwidth of 1 THz, using direct absorption spectrum from femtosecond-laser-based terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Spectral fitting of the fully resolved rotational lines yields good precision and accuracy with validation against calibrated mixtures. The estimated detection limts of the multi-speices sensing system are 250 ppm·m, 7 ppm·m and 4 ppm·m for CO, NH3 and H2O, respectively. The demonstration of quantitative, multi-species gas sensing indicates the feasibility and practical value of using broadband terahertz absorption spectroscopy for real-time, quantitative analysis and speciation of multicomponent gas in complicated practical environments such as combustion and multi-phase flows.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are directly associated with human health concerns and environmental safety. Therefore, it is urgent to achieve accurate detection of VOCs both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this work, the qualitative detection of ethyl benzene (EB), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and ethyl acetate (EA)—three pure VOCs in liquid phase—was discussed using terahertz (THz) microfluidic electromagnetic-induced transparency (EIT) meta-sensors. The THz response illustrated that with an increase in VOCs’ volumes (1– $6~mu ext{L}$ ), resonant frequencies of dual transmission dips (0.855 and 1.724 THz) and the EIT peak (1.213 THz) exhibited redshift. The limit of detections (LODs) for pure IPA, EA, and EB can achieve 5.45, 13.46, and $4.35~mu ext{g}$ , respectively. The multivariate fusion (MF) model based on the EIT responses to VOCs was utilized to improve the accuracy of trace detection and classification of VOCs. Furthermore, the above method combined with principal component analysis with the Gaussian mixture model (PCA-GMM) and the neural network classification algorithm support vector machine (SVM) was applied to the recognition of VOCs. In addition, the THz method is not feasible to detect trace amounts of VOCs (typically 0.3 mg/L) in wastewater because water is highly absorbable in the THz band and VOCs will evaporate if water is removed. Here, IPA, EA, and EB in soil were detected and classified by PCA-GMM combined with MF. Our results provide a new THz meta-sensor platform to trace the detection of VOCs in the liquid phase and soil and may be used to identify hazardous wastes in illegal dumping.

Abstract:Simultaneous detection of two analytes, carbon dioxide (CO 2 )and water vapor (H 2 O), has been realized using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with a single distributed feedback diode laser at 2.7 μm. The dynamic range of the spectrometer is extended from the low parts per million to the percentage range using two gas cells, a single-pass cell with 0.77 m, and a Herriott-type multipass cell with 76 m path length. Absolute measurements were carried out, i.e., amount fractions of the analytes were calculated based on previously determined spectral line parameters, without the need for an instrument calibration using gas standards. A thorough metrological characterization of the spectrometer is presented. We discuss traceability of all parameters used for amount fraction determination and provide a comprehensive uncertainty assessment. Relative expanded uncertainties ( k = 2, 95% confidence level) of the measured amount fractions are shown to be in the 2-3% range for both analytes. Minimum detectable amount fractions are 0.16 μmol/mol for CO 2 and 1.1 μmol/mol for H 2 0 for 76 m path length and 5 s averaging time. This corresponds to normalized detection limits of 27 μmol/mol m Hz _1/2 for CO 2 and 221 μmol/mol m Hz −1/2 for H 2 O. Precision of the spectrometer, determined using Allan variance analysis, is 3.3 nmol/mol for CO 2 and 21 nmol/mol for H 2 O. The spectrometer has been validated using reference gas mixtures with known CO 2 and H 2 O amount fractions. An application example of the absolute TDLAS spectrometer as a reference instrument to validate other sensors is also presented.

Open-Path Detection of Organic Vapors via Quantum Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:In recent years, quantum Fourier transform infrared (QFTIR) spectroscopy emerged as an alternative to conventional spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. By harnessing induced coherence and spectral entanglement, QFTIR offers promising potential for the practical detection of organic gasses. However, little research was conducted to bring QFTIR spectrometers closer to domestic or in-field usage. In this work, we present the first use of a QFTIR spectrometer for open-path detection of multiple interfering organic gases in ambient air. The accurate identification of mixtures of acetone, methanol, and ethanol vapors is demonstrated with a QFTIR spectrometer. We achieved this breakthrough by building a nonlinear Michelson interferometer with 1.7m-long arms to increase the absorption length, coupled with analysis techniques from differential absorption spectroscopy. The evolution of different gasses' concentrations in ambient air was measured through time. These results constitute the first use-case of a QFTIR spectrometer as a detector of organic gasses, and thus represent an important milestone towards the development of such detectors in practical situations.

Determination Of 67 Volatile Organic Compounds In Ambient Air Using Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:A method based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD GC -MS) was developed for the simultaneous analysis of 67 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. In this study, the adsorption effects of five kinds of stainless steel sorbent tubes for 78 VOCs were compared. The results revealed that a multisorbent bed with Carbograph 1TD and Tenax TA shows good adsorption effect for the 67 target compounds. The breakthrough rates of all the target compounds were less than 10% when high-purity helium gas was continuously purged for 45 min at 30 mL/min. The analytes included aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and oxygen-containing volatile organic compounds. The thermal desorption conditions for the determination of the target substances were optimized. In the range 5 -100 ng, the chromatographic response of the target compounds had a good linear relationship with their corresponding amounts, and the correlation coefficient (r) was between 1. 000 0 and 0. 997 7. The method detection limits ( MDLs) were 0. 3-2. 4 ng or 0. 3 -2. 4 mu g/m(3), as calculated by a 1 L sampling volume. The method was validated by means of recovery experiments (n =7) with the addition of 20 ng standard samples. The recoveries of all the target compounds were in the range of 81. 6% -114. 9%, and their relative standard deviations (RSDs) were in the range of 1. 2%-10. 2%. The VOCs present in the air in a carriage were detected using this method. The 19 target compounds included esters, halogenated alkanes, halogenated olefins, and aromatic substances, whose concentrations ranged from 1. 1 to 84. 1 g/m3. These results indicated that our method is accurate, reliable, and sensitive, and can allow for accurate quantification of the 67 target pollutants in ambient air.

Abstract:European Journal of Mass Spectrometry, Ahead of Print. Society's concerns about the citizens' exposure to possibly dangerous environments have recently risen; nevertheless, the assessment of indoor air quality still represents a major contemporary challenge. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are among the main factors responsible for deteriorating air quality conditions. These analytes are very common in daily-use environments and they can be extremely hazardous to human health, even at trace concentrations levels. For these reasons, their quick detection, identification, and quantification are crucial tasks, especially for indoor and heavily-populated scenarios, where the exposure time is usually quite long. In this work, a Gas Chromatography – Ion Mobility Spectrometry (GC-IMS) device was used for continuous monitoring indoor and ambient air environments at a large-scale, due to its outstanding levels of sensibility, selectivity, analytical flexibility, and almost real-time monitoring capability. A total of 496 spectra were collected from 15 locations of a university campus and posteriorly analysed. Overall, 23 compounds were identified among the 31 detected. Some of them, like Ethanol and 2-Propanol, were reported as being very hazardous to the human organism, especially in indoor environments. The achieved results confirmed the suitability of GC-IMS technology for air quality assessment and monitoring of VOCs and, more importantly, proved how dangerous indoor environments can be in scenarios of continuous exposure.

Abstract:The precise detection of volatile organic compounds plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental concerns, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. The accurate identification and quantification of these compounds because of their ubiquity and potential health hazards has fueled the development of advanced sensing technologies. This work presents a sensing system in the realm of long-wavelength infrared spectroscopy for achieving enhanced selectivity and sensitivity of benzene, toluene, and propane detection through quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy. High-resolution gas spectroscopy is made possible by the use of specially designed InAs/AlSb-based quantum cascade lasers, emitting in the wavelength range 13–15 μm, and quartz tuning forks. The sensor system, characterized by its robustness and precision, demonstrates exceptional capabilities in benzene, toluene, and propane detection. The system's capacity for practical applications in environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics is demonstrated by its ability to distinguish these volatile organic compounds with a minimum detection limit of 113 ppb, 3 ppb, and 3 ppm for toluene, benzene, and propane at an integration time of 10 s, even in complex gas matrices. This work advances gas sensing technology while also offering insightful information on spectral interferences, a persistent problem in the field. The results usher in a new era of sophisticated and reliable gas sensing techniques meeting the growing demand for precise volatile organic compounds detectors for environmental monitoring purposes.

Abstract:The terahertz region presents promising opportunities for quantitative gas sensing in practical environments thanks to its access to molecular fingerprints and immunity to particulate scattering. With Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), molecular absorption and dispersion spectra can be rendered using femtosecond-laser-based interferometric system. However, procurement of accurate spectroscopic parameters in this uncharted spectral region and quantitative reduction of the broadband data remain challenging. We propose and validate two end-to-end machine learning models based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) for efficient THz-TDS sensing in both time- and frequency-domain (TD and FD). Quantitative CO sensing is accomplished for proof-of-concept demonstration of the method. Both TD- and FD-GPR models demonstrate accurate predictions in the presence of measurement noise and ambient interference, and the root-mean-square errors are below 0.6 % with both simulated and experimental data. It is concluded that while the FD model benefits from immunity to dispersion distortions, the TD model noses out for its baseline-free nature and better elimination of temporally introduced noises. This work presents the first experimental demonstration of THz-TDS for quantitative gas sensing exploiting both TD and FD signals, showing promising prospects for real-time, multi-species, multi-parameter sensing under challenging scenarios such as chemically reactive or open-path atmospheric environments.
THz QCL-based cryogen-free spectrometer for in situ trace gas sensing

Abstract:We report on a set of high-sensitivity terahertz spectroscopy experiments making use of QCLs to detect rotational molecular transitions in the far-infrared. We demonstrate that using a compact and transportable cryogen-free setup, based on a quantum cascade laser in a closed-cycle Stirling cryostat, and pyroelectric detectors, a considerable improvement in sensitivity can be obtained by implementing a wavelength modulation spectroscopy technique. Indeed, we show that the sensitivity of methanol vapour detection can be improved by a factor ≈ 4 with respect to standard direct absorption approaches, offering perspectives for high sensitivity detection of a number of chemical compounds across the far-infrared spectral range.

Abstract:The correct interpretation of infrared (IR) observations of planetary atmospheres requires an accurate knowledge of temperature and partial and global pressures. Precise laboratory measurements of absorption intensities and line profiles, in the 200–350 K temperature range, are, therefore, critical. However, for gases only existing in complex chemical equilibria, such as nitrous or hypobromous acids, it is not possible to rely on absolute pressure measurements to measure absolute integrated optical absorption cross sections or IR line intensities. To overcome this difficulty, a novel dual-beam terahertz (THz)/mid-IR experimental setup has been developed, relying on the simultaneous use of two instruments. The setup involves a newly constructed temperature-controlled (200–350 K) cross-shaped absorption cell made of inert materials. The cell is traversed by the mid-IR beam from a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer using along a White-cell optical configuration providing absorption path lengths from 2.8 to 42 m and by a THz radiation beam (82.5 GHz to 1.1 THz), probing simultaneously the same gaseous sample. The THz channel records pure rotational lines of molecules for which the dipole moment was previously measured with high precision using Stark spectroscopy. This allows for a determination of the partial pressure in the gaseous mixture and enables absolute line intensities to be retrieved for the mid-IR range. This new instrument opens a new possibility for the retrieval of spectroscopic parameters for unstable molecules of atmospheric interest. The design and performance of the equipment are presented and illustrated by an example of simultaneous THz and mid-IR measurement on nitrous acid (HONO) equilibrium.

Abstract:We present first results of a research project that has the goal to develop an analyzer for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with extraordinarily high detection sensitivity and detection selectivity. Due to its high potential concerning these two key parameters, optical spectroscopy is employed. The new detection scheme is based on photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). PA detection utilizes the fact, that the excitation energy of light absorbing molecules is essentially transferred into kinetic energy of the surrounding molecules via inelastic collisions. This causes a local pressure increase in the absorbing gas. If the excitation source is modulated, a sound wave is generated that can be detected by a microphone and phase-sensitively measured using a lock-in amplifier. A considerable challenge of this project is represented by the broad and strongly overlapping absorption bands of the hydrocarbons. Discrimination of the VOCs is possible only by using a spectrally tunable monochromatic radiation source in combination with a sophisticated data analysis algorithm. Therefore, we apply an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with spectral emission between 3 and 4 mu m.
Subwavelength-Engineered Suspended Silicon Waveguide for Long-Wave Infrared Sensing Applications

Abstract:Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are regarded as major indoor pollutants and potentially threaten human health in the short- and long-term. Several VOCs are also indicators for specific diseases. Thus, portable and selective detection of VOCs is highly desired. In this letter, a chip-scale subwavelength-engineered suspended silicon waveguide platform working in the long-wave infrared is demonstrated for toluene vapor detection. The broadband characterization of this platform is presented and a flat transmission spectrum over the measured wavelength range is shown. With 3.8 dB/cm propagation loss achieved at the toluene absorption fingerprint of 6.65 µm, the limit of detection of toluene sensing reaches 6 ppm. The response and recovery time to the 6 ppm toluene are 3.0 and 5.6 s, respectively. This chip-scale optical gas sensing platform is a promising candidate for on-site real-time environmental monitoring and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:This paper reports the trace-level detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol, which are biomarkers for various diseases like diabetes, breast cancer, lung cancer, chronic pulmonary diseases, squamous cancer, cystic fibrosis, chronic liver diseases, chronic kidney diseases and so on. Here, the photoacoustic spectroscopy technique was used for the trace-level detection of these biomarkers using an indigenously designed tunable frequency (1.4 to 4 kHz range) Helmholtz photoacoustic (PA) cell. The study was carried out with UV (266 nm), Mid IR (5.4–7.3 μm) and THz (0.11 THz) range sources to explore and compare the PA signal generated by mentioned samples for different electronic vibrational and rotational level excitations. We achieved a low detection limit (LoD) of the order of 39.3 ppbV, 29.7 ppbV, and 11.6 ppbV for methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol, respectively using this non-invasive cost-effective, and fast technique. In addition, THz-based PA signal for these samples is reported for the first time.

Abstract:Detection and imaging using light at terahertz frequencies continues to be a topic of keen interest for numerous applications. Recent investigations have shown that stacks of natural Josephson junctions in cuprate superconductors are suitable emitters of THz radiation; now our attention turns to effective use of such a source. Using two setups, one featuring bolometric detection and the other heterodyne, the authors achieve results respectively comparable to those for time-domain spectroscopy and systems based on quantum cascade lasers. These findings indicate that their setups are in fact suitable for gas sensing in environmental monitoring.
