Abstract:Objective: Sleep apnea (SA), a common sleep disorder, can significantly decrease the quality of life, and is closely associated with major health risks such as cardiovascular disease, sudden death, depression, and hypertension. The normal diagnostic process of SA using polysomnography is costly and time consuming. In addition, the accuracy of different classification methods to detect SA varies with the use of different physiological signals. If an effective, reliable, and accurate classification method is developed, then the diagnosis of SA and its associated treatment will be time-efficient and economical. This study aims to systematically review the literature and present an overview of classification methods to detect SA using respiratory and oximetry signals and address the automated detection approach. Approach: Sixty-two included studies revealed the application of single and multiple signals (respiratory and oximetry) for the diagnosis of SA. Main results: Both airflow and oxygen saturation signals alone were effective in detecting SA in the case of binary decision-making, whereas multiple signals were good for multi-class detection. In addition, some machine learning methods were superior to the other classification methods for SA detection using respiratory and oximetry signals. Significance: To deal with the respiratory and oximetry signals, a good choice of classification method as well as the consideration of associated factors would result in high accuracy in the detection of SA. An accurate classification method should provide a high detection rate with an automated (independent of human action) analysis of respiratory and oximetry signals. Future high-quality automated studies using large samples of data from multiple patient groups or record batches are recommended.

Abstract:Sleep apnea (SLA) is a respiratory-related sleep disorder that affects a major proportion of the population. The gold standard in sleep testing, polysomnography, is costly, inconvenient, and unpleasant, and it requires a skilled professional to score. Multiple researchers have suggested and developed automated scoring processes with less detectors and automated classification algorithms to resolve these problems. An automatic detection system will allow for a high diagnosis rate and the analysis of additional patients. Deep learning (DL) is achieving high priority due to the availability of databases and recently developed methods. As the most up-and-coming technique for classification and generative tasks, DL has shown its significant potential in 2-dimensional clinical image processing studies. However, physiological information collected as 1-dimensional data has yet to be effectively extracted from this new approach to achieve the needed medical goals. So, in this study, we review the most recent studies in the field of DL applied to physiological data based on pulse oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram, airflow, and sound signal. A total of 47 articles from different journals and publishing houses that were published between 2012 and 2022 were identified. The primary objective of this work is to perform a comprehensive analysis to analyze, classify, and compare the main characteristics of deep-learning algorithms applied in physiological data processing for SLA detection. Overall, our analysis provides comprehensive and detailed information for researchers looking to add to this field. The data input source, objective, DL network, training framework, and database references are the critical factors of the DL approach examined. These are the most critical variables that influence system performance. We categorized the relevant research studies in physiological sensor data analysis using the DL approach based on (1) Physiological sensor data aspects, like signal types, sampling frequency, and window size; and (2) DL model perspectives, such as learning structure and input data types.
Automatic Home-based Screening of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Using Single Channel Electrocardiogram and SPO2 Signals

Abstract:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most widespread respiratory diseases today. Complete or relative breathing cessations due to upper airway subsidence during sleep is OSA. It has confirmed potential influence on Covid-19 hospitalization and mortality, and is strongly associated with major comorbidities of severe Covid-19 infection. Un-diagnosed OSA may also lead to a variety of severe physical and mental side-effects. To score OSA severity, nocturnal sleep monitoring is performed under defined protocols and standards called polysomnography (PSG). This method is time-consuming, expensive, and requiring professional sleep technicians. Automatic home-based detection of OSA is welcome and in great demand. It is a fast and effective way for referring OSA suspects to sleep clinics for further monitoring. On-line OSA detection also can be a part of a closed-loop automatic control of the OSA therapeutic/assistive devices. In this paper, several solutions for online OSA detection are introduced and tested on 155 subjects of three different databases. The best combinational solution uses mutual information (MI) analysis for selecting out of ECG and SpO2-based features. Several methods of supervised and unsupervised machine learning are employed to detect apnoeic episodes. To achieve the best performance, the most successful classifiers in four different ternary combination methods are used. The proposed configurations exploit limited use of biological signals, have online working scheme, and exhibit uniform and acceptable performance (over 85%) in all the employed databases. The benefits have not been gathered all together in the previous published methods.

Automatic scoring of apnea and hypopnea events using blood oxygen saturation signals

Abstract:The obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH) syndrome is a very common and frequently undiagnosed sleep disorder. It is characterized by repeated events of partial (hypopnea) or total (apnea) obstruction of the upper airway while sleeping. This study makes use of a previously developed method called DAS-KSVD for multiclass structured dictionary learning to automatically detect individual events of apnea and hypopnea using only blood oxygen saturation signals. The method uses a combined discriminant measure which is capable of efficiently quantifying the degree of discriminability of each one of the atoms in a dictionary. DAS-KSVD was applied to detect and classify apnea and hypopnea events from signals obtained from the Sleep Heart Health Study database. For moderate to severe OSAH screening, a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the results shows an area under the curve of 0.957 and diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 87.56% and 88.32%, respectively. These results represent improvements as compared to most state-of-the-art procedures. Hence, the method could be used for screening OSAH syndrome more reliably and conveniently, using only a pulse oximeter.

Abstract:Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder characterized by frequent breathing pauses during sleep. The apnea-hypopnea index is a measure used to assess the severity of sleep apnea and the hourly rate of respiratory events. Despite numerous commercial devices available for apnea diagnosis and early detection, accessibility remains challenging for the general population, leading to lengthy wait times in sleep clinics. Consequently, research on monitoring and predicting OSA has surged. This comprehensive paper reviews devices, emphasizing distinctions among representative apnea devices and technologies for home detection of OSA. The collected articles are analyzed to present a clear discussion. Each article is evaluated according to diagnostic elements, the implemented automation level, and the derived level of evidence and quality rating. The findings indicate that the critical variables for monitoring sleep behavior include oxygen saturation (oximetry), body position, respiratory effort, and respiratory flow. Also, the prevalent trend is the development of level IV devices, measuring one or two signals and supported by prediction software. Noteworthy methods showcasing optimal results involve neural networks, deep learning, and regression modeling, achieving an accuracy of approximately 99%.

Abstract:Background and Objective: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) poses health risks linked to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. However, the time-consuming and costly standard diagnostic method, polysomnography (PSG), limits its wide adoption and leads to underdiagnosis. To tackle this, cost-effective algorithms using single-lead signals (like respiratory, blood oxygen, and electrocardiogram) have emerged. Despite respiratory signals being preferred for SDB assessment, a lack of comprehensive reviews addressing their algorithmic scope and performance persists. This paper systematically reviews 2012-2022 literature, covering signal sources, processing, feature extraction, classification, and application, aiming to bridge this gap and provide future research references. Methods: This systematic review followed the registered PROSPERO protocol (CRDXXXXXXX), initially screening 342 papers, with 32 studies meeting data extraction criteria. Results: Respiratory signal sources include nasal airflow (NAF), oronasal airflow (OAF), and respiratory movement-related signals such as thoracic respiratory effort (TRE) and abdominal respiratory effort (ARE). Classification techniques include threshold rule-based methods (8), machine learning (ML) models (13), and deep learning (DL) models (11). The NAF-based algorithm achieved the highest average accuracy at 94.11%, surpassing 78.19% for other signals. Hypopnea detection sensitivity with single-source respiratory signals remained modest, peaking at 73.34%. The TRE and ARE signals proved to be reliable in identifying different types of SDB because distinct respiratory disorders exhibited different patterns of chest and abdominal motion. Conclusions: Multiple detection algorithms have been widely applied for SDB detection, and their accuracy is closely related to factors such as signal source, signal processing, feature selection, and model selection.

Abstract:Automatic assessment of sleep apnea/ hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) based on fewer physiological signals is critical for the success of healthcare at home. However, previous studies that use such settings only achieve a lower assessment accuracy, causing fewer syndromes to be separated for effective diagnosis. This paper presents a 3-stage support vector machines (SVM)-based algorithm for SAHS assessment using a single-channel nasal pressure (NP) signal. In this work, NP signal is utilized for feature extraction. Amplitude features, as well as those extracted using discrete Fourier transform and discrete wavelet transform, are used for machine learning. A total of 58 sets of polysomnography recordings, each with approximately 7 h in duration, were analyzed. This work achieves a sensitivity of 95.7% and a positive predictive value of 90.9%, outperforming previous works using NP signal. Compared with prior studies using only SpO2 signal, this work still achieves better performance and supports more classification levels. Thanks to the low-complexity settings based only on the NP signal, the proposed approach provides a promising solution to SAHS assessment for remote healthcare.

Deep learning approaches for assessing pediatric sleep apnea severity through SpO2 signals

Abstract:Pediatric Sleep Apnea–Hypopnea (SAH) presents a significant health challenge, particularly in diagnostic contexts, where conventional Polysomnography (PSG) testing, although effective, can be distressing for children. Addressing this, our research proposes a less invasive method to assess pediatric SAH severity by analyzing blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) signals. We adopted two advanced deep learning architectures, namely ResNet-based and attention-augmented hybrid CNN-BiGRU models, to process SpO2 signals in a one-dimensional (1D) format for Apnea–Hypopnea Index (AHI) estimation in pediatric subjects. Employing the CHAT dataset, which includes 844 SpO2 signals, the data was partitioned into training (60%), testing (30%), and validation (10%) sets. A predefined validation subset was randomly selected to ensure the models' robustness via a threefold cross-validation approach. Comparative analysis revealed that while the ResNet model attained an average accuracy of 72.9% across four SAH severity categories with a kappa score of 0.57, the CNN-BiGRU-Attention model demonstrated superior performance, achieving an average accuracy of 75.95% and a kappa score of 0.63. This distinction underscores our method's efficacy in both estimating AHI and categorizing SAH severity levels with notable precision. Further, to evaluate diagnostic capabilities, the models were benchmarked against common AHI thresholds (1, 5, and 10 events/hour) in each test fold, affirming their effectiveness in identifying pediatric SAH. This study marks a significant advance in the field, offering a non-invasive, child-friendly alternative for pediatric SAH diagnosis. Although challenges persist in accurately estimating AHI, particularly in severe cases, our findings represent a critical stride towards improving diagnostic processes in pediatric SAH.

Abstract:Sleep apnea (SA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by breathing pauses during sleep. A person's sleep schedule is significantly influenced by that person's hectic lifestyle, which may include unhealthy eating habits and their line of work. Polysomnographic (PSG) sleep studies examine sleep-related disorders by recording various biosignals from the human body. However, SA classification methods could be more robust in terms of performance because they rely on feature-engineering strategies or employ a particular signal from PSG recording for diagnosis. This study aims to classify the severity of SA according to the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) into normal, mild, and moderate-to-severe groups using oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The proposed deep neural network (DNN)-bidirectional long short-term memory (DNN-BiLSTM) framework addresses the issue of low detection accuracy in analysis. The DNN-BiLSTM approach employs features extracted from a multiscale dilation attention 1D convolutional neural network (MSDA-1DCNN) as input for detection and classification purposes. The MSDA-1DCNN network extracts deep features from processed SpO 2 , EEG, and ECG signals. The developed firefly combined electric fish optimization (FCEFO) algorithm improves performance by optimizing the hidden neuron count of the DNN and the learning rate of the BiLSTM framework. The performance measures proved the effectiveness of the model over conventional machine and deep learning approaches. With the integration of deep features, the proposed DNN-BiLSTM model provides enhanced performance in terms of accuracy and precision. Thus, the proposed approach is progressive and can be used for medical diagnosis.

Abstract:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is primarily characterized by intermittent nocturnal hypoxia and sleep fragmentation. Arousals interrupt sleep continuity and lead to sleep fragmentation, which can lead to cognitive dysfunction, excessive daytime sleepiness, and adverse cardiovascular outcome events, making arousals important for diagnosing OSA and reducing the risk of complications, including heart disease and cognitive impairment. Traditional arousal interpretation requires sleep specialists to manually score PSG recordings throughout the night, which is time consuming and has low inter-specialist agreement, so the search for simple, efficient, and reliable arousal detection methods can be a powerful tool to clinicians. In this paper, we systematically reviewed different methods for recognizing arousal in OSA patients, including autonomic markers (pulse conduction time, pulse wave amplitude, peripheral arterial tone, heart rate, etc.) and machine learning-based automated arousal detection systems, and found that autonomic markers may be more beneficial in certain subgroups, and that deep artificial networks will remain the main research method for automated arousal detection in the future.
A review of automated sleep disorder detection

Abstract:Automated sleep disorder detection is challenging because physiological symptoms can vary widely. These variations make it difficult to create effective sleep disorder detection models which support hu-man experts during diagnosis and treatment monitoring. From 2010 to 2021, authors of 95 scientific papers have taken up the challenge of automating sleep disorder detection. This paper provides an expert review of this work. We investigated whether digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide automated diagnosis support for sleep disorders. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines during the content discovery phase. We compared the performance of proposed sleep disorder detection methods, involving differ-ent datasets or signals. During the review, we found eight sleep disorders, of which sleep apnea and insomnia were the most studied. These disorders can be diagnosed using several kinds of biomedical signals, such as Electrocardiogram (ECG), Polysomnography (PSG), Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyogram (EMG), and snore sound. Subsequently, we established areas of commonality and distinctiveness. Common to all reviewed papers was that AI models were trained and tested with labelled physiological signals. Looking deeper, we discovered that 24 distinct algorithms were used for the detection task. The nature of these algorithms evolved, before 2017 only traditional Machine Learning (ML) was used. From 2018 onward, both ML and Deep Learning (DL) methods were used for sleep disorder detection. The strong emergence of DL algorithms has considerable implications for future detection systems because these algorithms demand significantly more data for training and testing when compared with ML. Based on our review results, we suggest that both type and amount of labelled data is crucial for the design of future sleep disorder detection systems because this will steer the choice of AI algorithm which establishes the desired decision support. As a guiding principle, more labelled data will help to represent the variations in symptoms. DL algorithms can extract information from these larger data quantities more effectively, therefore; we predict that the role of these algorithms will continue to expand.
A Physiology Guided Machine Learning Approach to Predict Short and Long Term Outcomes of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Abstract:Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA) is a chronic condition that affects 1 billion people worldwide. Apnea Hypopnea Index(AHI) is the clinical gold standard to measure the severity of OSA. This study highlights limitations in the apnea-hypopnea index as a predictor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) outcomes. Instead, a physiology-guided machine learning (ML) approach was developed using features from ventilatory, hypoxic, and arousal domains, based on polysomnography data from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS). The ML model demonstrated superior predictive performance for all-cause mortality (AUROC-0.93) and daytime sleepiness (AUROC-0.81) compared to AHI. Explainable AI techniques, such as SHAP analysis, provided insights into feature importance, offering a clinically interpretable and scalable tool for OSA outcome prediction.

Abstract:Background /Objective: Automatic apnea/hypopnea events classification, crucial for clinical applications, often faces challenges, particularly in hypopnea detection. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a combined approach using nasal respiration flow (RF), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and ECG signals during polysomnography (PSG) for improved sleep apnea/hypopnea detection and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity screening. Methods An Xception network was trained using main features from RF, SpO2, and ECG signals obtained during PSG. In addition, we incorporated demographic data for enhanced performance. The detection of apnea/hypopnea events was based on RF and SpO2 feature sets, while the screening and severity categorization of OSA utilized predicted apnea/hypopnea events in conjunction with demographic data. Results Using RF and SpO2 feature sets, our model achieved an accuracy of 94 % in detecting apnea/hypopnea events. For OSA screening, an exceptional accuracy of 99 % and an AUC of 0.99 were achieved. OSA severity categorization yielded an accuracy of 93 % and an AUC of 0.91, with no misclassification between normal and mild OSA versus moderate and severe OSA. However, classification errors predominantly arose in cases with hypopnea-prevalent participants. Conclusions The proposed method offers a robust automatic detection system for apnea/hypopnea events, requiring fewer sensors than traditional PSG, and demonstrates exceptional performance. Additionally, the classification algorithms for OSA screening and severity categorization exhibit significant discriminatory capacity.

Abstract:Objective: Sleep related respiratory abnormalities are typically detected using polysomnography. There is a need in general medicine and critical care for a more convenient method to automatically detect sleep apnea from a simple, easy-to-wear device. The objective is to automatically detect abnormal respiration and estimate the Apnea-Hypopnea-Index (AHI) with a wearable respiratory device, compared to an SpO2 signal or polysomnography using a large (n = 412) dataset serving as ground truth. Methods: Simultaneously recorded polysomnographic (PSG) and wearable respiratory effort data were used to train and evaluate models in a cross-validation fashion. Time domain and complexity features were extracted, important features were identified, and a random forest model employed to detect events and predict AHI. Four models were trained: one each using the respiratory features only, a feature from the SpO2 (%)-signal only, and two additional models that use the respiratory features and the SpO2 (%)-feature, one allowing a time lag of 30 seconds between the two signals. Results: Event-based classification resulted in areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.94, 0.86, 0.82, and areas under the precision-recall curves of 0.48, 0.32, 0.51 for the models using respiration and SpO2, respiration-only, and SpO2-only respectively. Correlation between expert-labelled and predicted AHI was 0.96, 0.78, and 0.93, respectively. Conclusions: A wearable respiratory effort signal with or without SpO2 predicted AHI accurately. Given the large dataset and rigorous testing design, we expect our models are generalizable to evaluating respiration in a variety of environments, such as at home and in critical care.

Abstract:Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects a large population. This disorder can cause or augment the exposure to cardiovascular dysfunction, stroke, diabetes, and poor productivity. The polysomnography (PSG) test, which is the gold standard for sleep apnea detection, is expensive, inconvenient, and unavailable to the population at large. This calls for more friendly and accessible solutions for diagnosing sleep apnea. In this paper, we examine how sleep apnea is detected clinically, and how a combination of advances in embedded systems and machine learning can help make its diagnosis easier, more affordable, and accessible. We present the relevance of machine learning in sleep apnea detection, and a study of the recent advances in the aforementioned area. The review covers research based on machine learning, deep learning, and sensor fusion, and focuses on the following facets of sleep apnea detection: (i) type of sensors used for data collection, (ii) feature engineering approaches applied on the data (iii) classifiers used for sleep apnea detection/classification. We also analyze the challenges in the design of sleep apnea detection systems, based on the literature survey.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Existing sleep apnea identification methods require polysomnograms, requiring patients schedule the exam and to sleep with many sensors attached to their body. Oxygen desaturation occurs during sleep in patients with sleep apnea, leading to poor rest and other significant complications. Existing work shows the potential of EEG signals as indicators of sleep apnea, identifying a correlation between EEG signals and sleep apnea diagnosis. However, further work is required to understand how blood oxygenation correlates with features in the brain. Recent advancements in signal processing allow EEG signal analysis to identify oxygen desaturation events in real time. Methods We leverage EEG signals from polysomnogram studies included in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sleep DataBank (NCHSDB) dataset for this study. We first break the data into 30-second epochs, then label epochs where the oxygen desaturation event (< 90% SpO2) encompasses all 30 seconds of the epoch as epochs containing desaturations. We furthermore label all epochs where no oxygen desaturation occurs as epochs without desaturations. We perform short-term Fourier transforms on each epoch of EEG data. We randomly select a training set of 20 subjects and a testing set of 20 subjects, different for each sleep state (NREM1, NREM2, NREM3, REM). We then train a ResNet based deep learning network on these EEG signals to predict which epochs contain an oxygen desaturation and which epochs do not contain an oxygen desaturation. Results Our model obtains a test balanced accuracy of 77.1% for NREM1 sleep, 58.9% for NREM2 sleep, 80.1% for NREM3 sleep, and 71.0% for REM sleep. Conclusion Our results indicate that machine learning models can identify a correlation between oxygen desaturation from EEG signals alone, indicating a potential biomarker for real-time identification of oxygen desaturation from neural signals. This provides a step towards easier identification of sleep apnea, requiring fewer sensors than a traditional polysomnogram. Abstract:Background: Early detection of sleep apnea, the health condition where airflow either ceases or decreases episodically during sleep, is crucial to initiate timely interventions and avoid complications. Wearable artificial intelligence (AI), the integration of AI algorithms into wearable devices to collect and analyze data to offer various functionalities and insights, can efficiently detect sleep apnea due to its convenience, accessibility, affordability, objectivity, and real-time monitoring capabilities, thereby addressing the limitations of traditional approaches such as polysomnography. Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of wearable AI in detecting sleep apnea, its type, and its severity. Methods: Our search was conducted in 6 electronic databases. This review included English research articles evaluating wearable AI's performance in identifying sleep apnea, distinguishing its type, and gauging its severity. Two researchers independently conducted study selection, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias using an adapted Quality Assessment of Studies of Diagnostic Accuracy-Revised tool. We used both narrative and statistical techniques for evidence synthesis. Results: Among 615 studies, 38 (6.2%) met the eligibility criteria for this review. The pooled mean accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of wearable AI in detecting apnea events in respiration (apnea and nonapnea events) were 0.893, 0.793, and 0.947, respectively. The pooled mean accuracy of wearable AI in differentiating types of apnea events in respiration (normal, obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, mixed apnea, and hypopnea) was 0.815. The pooled mean accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of wearable AI in detecting sleep apnea were 0.869, 0.938, and 0.752, respectively. The pooled mean accuracy of wearable AI in identifying the severity level of sleep apnea (normal, mild, moderate, and severe) and estimating the severity score (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) was 0.651 and 0.877, respectively. Subgroup analyses found different moderators of wearable AI performance for different outcomes, such as the type of algorithm, type of data, type of sleep apnea, and placement of wearable devices. Conclusions: Wearable AI shows potential in identifying and classifying sleep apnea, but its current performance is suboptimal for routine clinical use. We recommend concurrent use with traditional assessments until improved evidence supports its reliability. Certified commercial wearables are needed for effectively detecting sleep apnea, predicting its occurrence, and delivering proactive interventions. Researchers should conduct further studies on detecting central sleep apnea, prioritize deep learning algorithms, incorporate self-reported and nonwearable data, evaluate performance across different device placements, and provide detailed findings for effective meta-analyses.

Abstract:Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a common but underdiagnosed health problem related to impaired quality of life and increased cardiovascular risk. In order to solve the problem of complicated and expensive operation procedures for clinical diagnosis of sleep apnea, here we propose a small and low-cost wearable apnea diagnostic system. The system uses a photoplethysmography (PPG) optical sensor to collect human pulse wave signals and blood oxygen saturation synchronously. Then multiscale entropy and random forest algorithms are used to process the PPG signal for analysis and diagnosis of sleep apnea. The SAS determination is based on the comprehensive diagnosis of the PPG signal and blood oxygen saturation signal, and the blood oxygen is used to exclude the error induced by non-pathological factors. The performance of the system is compared with the Compumedics Grael PSG (Polysomnography) sleep monitoring system. This simple diagnostic system provides a feasible technical solution for portable and low-cost screening and diagnosis of SAS patients with a high accuracy of over 85%.

Abstract:Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) is one of the common sleep disorders which cause hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus, as well as the increment of vehicle collisions. Polysomnography is a traditional way of diagnosing sleep disorder which requires multiple sensors for producing multiple physiological signals. Traditional Polysomnography causes huge costs for diagnosing SAHS because it requires numerous sensors as well as time. This study has developed a model by using deep learning techniques to minimize the cost and time for SAHS diagnosing. This study has utilized the SpO2 signal by using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as a deep learning technique to detect SAHS in any individuals. The sleep disorder depends on the amount of blood in the body which is detected by the SpO2 signal.  The proposed CNN model consists of eight layers: three convolution layers, three max-pooling layers, one fully connected layer, and one softmax layer. Two datasets were used: the Apnea-ECG and UCD databases; the first has eight subjects, and the last has 25 subjects. In carrying out the tests, our model achieved an accuracy of 95.5% with the Apnea-ECG database and 90.2% with the UCD database. The suggested technique has provided a cost-effective and efficient way of identifying SAHS in any individual.

Abstract:Sleep is a vital component of every human being. Adequate restful and restorative sleep reenergizes the body, enhances overall health and psychological well-being. Sleep hygiene, chaotic lifestyles, disorder breathing, stress, and anxiety contribute to poor sleep quality. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) sleep respiratory disorder causes temporary lapses of breathing results in gasping, choking, snoring sounds during sleep. The individual does not consciously wake up, but the brain has to start breathing again which disrupts the sleep quality. Polysomnography (PSG) sleep study is employed to diagnose sleep disorders by using either in-home or laboratory-based comprehensive tests. The untreated OSA leads to deterioration in health, performance consequences with severity including daytime sleepiness, motor vehicle accidents, workplace errors, cardiovascular morbidity, and mortality. The pre-processed, interpolated and segmented ECG signal is considered for the examination of OSA. This paper focuses on three types of deep learning classifiers-based prediction models for detection of apnea from the ECG signal. The accuracy value of Long Short Term Memory model (LSTM) is 85 percent and classifier's ability to distinguish between normal and apnea events is 0.88.The Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) classifier and Convolution Neural Network (CNN) model have an f1- score value of 0.80. The proposed LSTM model provides the optimal performance in comparison to other deep learning models used for classification with respect to area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy metrics.
