Abstract:Green plant-based silver nanoparticles (GP-Ag NPs) have contributed to the development of ecological technologies with low environmental impact and safer for human health, as well as demonstrating potential for the control of vectors and intermediate hosts. However, knowledge about its toxicity in the early stages of gastropod development remains scarce. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the toxicity of GP-Ag NPs synthesized from Croton urucurana leaf extracts in snail species Biomphalaria glabrata , which is an intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni parasite. GP-Ag NPs were synthesized using two types of plant extracts (aqueous and hydroethanolic) and characterized using multiple techniques. Bioassays focused on investigating GP-Ag NPs and plant extracts were carried out with embryos and newly hatched snails, for 144 h and 96 h, respectively; toxicity was analyzed based on mortality, hatching, development inhibition, and morphological changes. Results have shown that both GP-Ag NPs were more toxic to embryos and newly hatched snails than the investigated plant extracts. GP-Ag NPs deriving from aqueous extract have higher molluscicidal activity than those deriving from hydroethanolic extract. Both GP-Ag NPs induced mortality, hatching delay, development inhibition, and morphological changes (i.e., hydropic embryos), indicating their molluscicidal activities. Moreover, embryos were more sensitive to GP-Ag NPs than newly hatched snails. Thus, the toxicity of GP-Ag NPs to freshwater snails depends on the type of extracts and the snail's developmental stages. These findings can contribute to the development of green nanobiotechnologies applicable to control snails of medical importance.

Abstract:The present study revealed the toxic effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in Artemia nauplii and evaluated the mortality rate, hatching percentage, and genotoxic effect in Artemia nauplii /cysts. The AgNPs were commercially purchased and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Nanoparticles were spherical in nature and with size range of 30–40 nm. Artemia cysts were collected from salt pan, processed, and hatched in sea water. Artemia nauplii (II instar) were treated using silver nanoparticles of various nanomolar concentrations and LC 50 value (10 nM) and mortality rate (24 and 48 hours) was evaluated. Hatching percentage of decapsulated cysts treated with AgNPs was examined. Aggregation of AgNPs in the gut region of nauplii was studied using phase contrast microscope and apoptotic cells in nauplii stained with acridine orange were observed using fluorescence microscope. DNA damage of single cell of nauplii was determined by comet assay. This study showed that as the concentration of AgNPs increased, the mortality rate, aggregation in gut region, apoptotic cells, and DNA damage increased in nauplii , whereas the percentage of hatching in Artemia cysts decreased. Thus this study revealed that the nanomolar concentrations of AgNPs have toxic effect on both Artemia nauplii and cysts.
Biocidal effect of Nigella sativa, Pelargonium graveolens and Azadirachta indica extracts on Bulinus truncatus snail and aquatic stages of Schistosoma haematobium

Abstract:Background: Schistosomiasis is a public health problem of social and economic importance in thedeveloping world. Schistosomiasis haematobium is still endemic in many foci along the Nile valley,especially in El Fayoum and Beni-Suef governorates. Chemotherapy and snail eradication are the mostimportant control measures with few studies that dealt with its snail intermediate host, Bulinus truncatus.Because of drug resistance and recurrence of exposure to infection, snail control becomes a better methodfor control, keeping in mind that chemical molluscicides may have toxic effects on non-target organisms.Objectives: The aim of the study is to search for biologically derived molluscicides such as plant extracts,that are less expensive, available, biodegradable, non-toxic and easily applicable than synthetic ones.Material and Methods: The effect of oil extracts of three natural plants; Nigella sativa, Pelargoniumgraveolens and Azadirachta indica were investigated as molluscicidal agents against B. truncatus snail.Histopathological examination of the soft tissue of the snail was performed after its removal from the shelland its staining with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). Effect of the three plants on miracidia and cercariae ofS. haematobium was also evaluated.Results: The potent molluscicidal effect was demonstrated by disturbance of normal histology andpresence of vacuolated tissues evident by microscopical examination of the dead snails after HE staining.A schistosomicidal effect was also recorded against aquatic stages of the parasite, demonstrated byreduction in the movement of the miracidia, followed by their sinking down together with the cercariae.N. sativa showed the most potent molluscicidal, miracidicidal, as well as cercaricidal activities, followed byP. graveolens, while A. indica had the least effect.Conclusion: These findings recommend the use of the studied plant extracts as safe and effective agentsin the control of S. haematobium in Egypt.
Evaluation of the early results of a loop stoma with a plastic rod in comparison to a loop stoma made with a skin bridge.

Abstract:UNLABELLED Loop stoma allows reducing the percentage of anastomotic leak and re-operation caused by this complication. Our department has performed the loop stoma on a skin bridge since 2011. The aim of the study was to evaluate the early results of treatment after the skin bridge loop stoma creation in comparison with the stoma made on a plastic rod. Both groups had 20 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 40 patients with ileostomy, operated 2010-2013. We evaluated 20 patients with a loop ileostomy on a plastic rod, compared to 20 other patients with a skinbridge ileostomy. The study included 24 men and 16 women. Median age was 68.3. All evaluated patients were previously operated due to rectal cancer. RESULTS It has been shown that the surgical site infection is more common in the group with a plastic rod (5 vs 1 patient). Inflammation of the skin around the stoma occurred in 18 patients (90%) in the first group, while no such complication was found in patients in the second group. The average number of exchanged ostomy wafers was 2.9 per week in the first group of patients, and 1,1 in the second group (p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The creation of the skin bridge stoma allows for tight fit of the ostomy appliance immediately after surgery completion. The equipment has stable and long-lasting contact with the skin, no skin inflammatory changes occur. Also the surgical site infection rates are lower in this group of patients. As perioperative patient does not require an increased number of ostomy appliance, the cost of treatment can be considered as an important aspect.
Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles with High Antimicrobial Activity and Low Cytotoxicity Using Catechol-Conjugated Chitosan

Abstract:In this study, catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) was synthesized to prepare silver nanoparticles in aqueous solution as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The entire reaction process complied with the principles of green chemistry. The stability and physicochemical properties of CSS-coated silver nanoparticles (CSS–Ag NPs) were well characterized by a series of techniques. A narrow diameter distribution and excellent stability were observed in the target CSS–Ag NPs. Determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the disk diffusion test were applied to evaluate the antibacterial activities with respect to quantity and quality, respectively. The cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells were also evaluated with a series of assays. The resulting CSS–Ag NPs combined the unique properties of chitosan and silver nanoparticles, showing effective antibacterial activities and low cytotoxicity. The effective toxic concentration of CSS–Ag NPs towards E. coli and S. aureus is too low to damage HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that CSS–Ag NPs could be a potential candidate for use in biological and pharmaceutical areas to prevent infections caused by microorganisms.
Evaluation of the prophylactic and therapeutic efficacies of mucus and tissue nucleoproteins extracted from Biomphalaria alexandrina snails on schistosomiasis mansoni

Abstract:Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with considerable morbidity. The lone effective drug, praziquantel (PZQ), is showing emergence of drug resistance hence, searching for new supportive treatment is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of mucus and nucleoproteins (NPs) extracted from Biomphalaria alexandrina (B. alexandrina) snails on miracidia, cercariae and Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) adults in vitro and assess their experimental in vivo effect through parasitological, histopathological, and biochemical parameters. The in vivo study included 90 male Swiss albino mice. Mice were grouped into 9 groups; G1-G5 were infected and treated with; GI: PZQ, GII: mucus, GIII: combined PZQ and mucus, GIV: NPs, GV: combined PZQ and NPs. Control groups; C1: Non infected non treated (negative control), C2: Infected non treated (positive control), C3: Non infected mucus treated and C4: Non infected NPs treated. The in vitro study proved that the mucus had a better lethal effect on cercariae than miracidia, while NPs had better lethal effect on miracidia. The mucus lethal effect on adults surpassed the NPs as 100% and 60%, respectively. The in vivo study proved that the combined NPs or mucus with PZQ added to the effect of individual PZQ resulting in 100% total worm burden (TWB) reduction. As regard oxidative stress markers, the lowest level of nitric oxide (NO) was shown with combined PZQ and NPs. While, the highest glutathione (GSH) level was produced by individual PZQ. The study concluded that mucus and NPs of B. alexandrina had cercaricidal, miracidicidal and anti-schistosomal effect in vitro and that their combination could be considered a contribution to PZQ potentiality in vivo.
Biological and biochemical parameters of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails exposed to the plants Datura stramonium and Sesbania sesban as water suspensions of their dry powder

Abstract:Four plant species, as a dry powder of their leaves, were tested against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. The bioassay tests revealed the plants Datura stramonium and Sesbania sesban to be more toxic to the snails than the other two ones. Therefore, they were tested against snails’ fecundity (Mx), reproduction rate (Ro) and their infection with S. mansoni miracidia. In addition, total protein concentration and the activities of the transaminases (AsT and AlT) and phosphatases (AcP and AkP) enzymes in hemolymph and tissues of snails treated with these plants were determined. As well, glucose concentration in snails’ hemolymph was evaluated.Exposure of snails for 4weeks to LC10 and LC25 of the plants D. stramonium and S. sesban dry powder markly suppressed their Mx and Ro. The reduction rates of Ro for snails exposed to LC25 of these plants were 62.1% and 76.4%, respectively. As well, a considerable reduction in the infection rates of snails exposed to these plants either during, pre- or post-miracidial exposure was recorded. Thus, infection rates of snails treated during miracidial exposure with LC10 of D. stramonium and S. sesban were 41.7% and 52.2%, respectively, compared to 92.6% for control group (P<0.01). These plants, also, reduced the duration of cercarial shedding and cercarial production/snail. So, snails exposed to LC25 of these plants shed 372.8 and 223.2 cercariae/snail, respectively, compared to 766.3 cercariae/infected control snail (P<0.01).The results, also, revealed that glucose and total protein concentrations in hemolymph of snails treated with LC10 and LC25 of these plants were decreased, meanwhile, the activities of the enzymes AsT, AlT, AcP and AkP were elevated (P<0.01). However, the activity of AcP in tissues of treated snails was decreased compared to that of control ones. It is concluded that LC25 of the plants D. stramonium and S. sesban negatively interferes with biological and physiological activities of B. alexandrina snails, consequently it could be effective in interrupting and minimizing the transmission of S. mansoni.

Impact of water physicochemical properties on the survival of Oncomelania hupensis snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum

Abstract:Background: Schistosoma japonicum, the causative agent of schistosomiasis, heavily relies on its single intermediate host, the Oncomelania hupensis snail, for its life cycle. Controlling these snails effectively plays a pivotal role in curbing the transmission and prevalence of this disease. While prior research has extensively investigated the impact of environmental factors such as temperature and vegetation on snail survival, growth, and reproduction, the contribution of water physicochemical properties has been notably underexplored. This study presents laboratory experiments designed to comprehensively explore the influence of water physicochemical properties on snail survival, offering valuable insights into environmental factors for more precise predictions of snail distribution. Methods: We meticulously conducted laboratory snail survival experiments using water from different sources (river water/tap water), and employed a statistical approach amalgamating principal component analysis with Cox regression to preliminarily investigate the effects of different water physicochemical properties on the survival of snails. Results: Our analysis indicates that after a 6-month laboratory snail survival experiment, the survival rate in the tap water group was significantly higher than that in the river water group for infected snails (χ2 = 7.74, p = 0.005), while the difference in survival rates for non-infected snails was not statistically significant (χ2 = 0.61, p = 0.434). The Principal Component-Cox regression analysis revealed that in the infected snail group, total phosphorus, pH value, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, conductivity, and nitrite were protective factors for snail survival, while phosphate and total nitrogen were risk factors. In the non-infected snail group, total phosphorus, pH value, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, conductivity, and nitrite were protective factors for snail survival, and total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, phosphate, and nitrate were risk factors. Conclusions: This study underscores the substantial impact of water quality's physicochemical properties on snail survival. The effects of water quality on snails are complex, and maintaining an appropriate level of organic matter content and controlling the pH value at a weak alkalescency level prove beneficial for snail survival. These findings hold significant promise for advancing our understanding of snail-borne diseases and optimizing control strategies.

Abstract:Schistosomiasis is a major neglected disease that imposes a substantial worldwide health burden, affecting approximately 250 million people globally. As praziquantel is the only available drug to treat schistosomiasis, there is a critical need to identify new anthelmintic compounds, particularly from natural sources. To enhance the activity of different natural products, one potential avenue involves its combination with silver nanoparticles (AgNP). Based on this approach, a one‐step green method for the in situ preparation of dehydrodieugenol (DHDG) by oxidation coupling reaction using silver and natural eugenol is presented. AgNP formation was confirmed by UV‐Vis spectroscopy due to the appearance of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 430 nm which is characteristic of silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were spherical with sizes in the range of 40 to 50 nm. Bioassays demonstrated that the silver nanoparticles loaded with DHDG exhibited significant anthelmintic activity against Schistosoma mansoni adult worms without toxicity to mammalian cells and an in vivo animal model (Caenorhabditis elegans), contributing to the development of new prototypes based on natural products for the treatment of schistosomiasis.

The potential antimalarial efficacy of hemocompatible silver nanoparticles from Artemisia species against P. falciparum parasite

Abstract:Malaria represents one of the most common infectious diseases which becoming an impellent public health problem worldwide. Antimalarial classical medications include quinine-based drugs, like chloroquine, and artesunate, a derivative of artemisinin, a molecule found in the plant Artemisia annua. Such therapeutics are very effective but show heavy side effects like drug resistance. In this study, "green" silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been prepared from two Artemisia species (A. abrotanum and A. arborescens), traditionally used in folk medicine as a remedy for different conditions, and their potential antimalarial efficacy have been assessed. AgNPs have been characterized by UV-Vis, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential, FTIR, XRD, TEM and EDX. The structural characterization has demonstrated the spheroidal shape of nanoparticles and dimensions under 50 nm, useful for biomedical studies. Zeta potential analysis have shown the stability and dispersion of green AgNPs in aqueous medium without aggregation. AgNPs hemocompatibility and antimalarial activity have been studied in Plasmodium falciparum cultures in in vitro experiments. The antiplasmodial effect has been assessed using increasing doses of AgNPs (0.6 to 7.5 μg/mL) on parasitized red blood cells (pRBCs). Obtained data showed that the hemocompatibility of AgNPs is related to their synthetic route and depends on the administered dose. A. abrotanum-AgNPs (1) have shown the lowest percentage of hemolytic activity on pRBCs, underlining their hemocompatibility. These results are in accordance with the lower levels of parasitemia observed after A. abrotanum-AgNPs (1) treatment respect to A. arborescens-AgNPs (2), and AgNPs (3) derived from a classical chemical synthesis. Moreover, after 24 and 48 hours of A. abrotanum-AgNPs (1) treatment, the parasite growth was locked in the ring stage, evidencing the effect of these nanoparticles to hinder the maturation of P. falciparum. The anti-malarial activity of A. abrotanum-AgNPs (1) on pRBCs was demonstrated to be higher than that of A. arborescens-AgNPs (2).
Activities of pumpkin seed oil against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and the infective stages of Schistosoma mansoni with special emphasis on genotoxic and histopathological alterations

Abstract:Schistosomiasis is a serious health issue in tropical regions, and natural compounds have gained popularity in medical science. This study investigated the potential effects of pumpkin seed oil (PSO) on Biomphalaria [B.] alexandrina snails (Ehrenberg, 1831), Schistosoma [S.] mansoni (Sambon, 1907) miracidium, and cercariae. The chemical composition of PSO was determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A bioassay was performed to evaluate the effects of PSO on snails, miracidia, and cercariae. The results showed no significant mortality of B. alexandrina snails after exposure to PSO, but it caused morphological changes in their hemocytes at 1.0 mg/ml for 24 hours. PSO exhibited larvicidal activity against miracidia after 2 hours of exposure at a LC 50 of 618.4 ppm. A significant increase in the mortality rate of miracidia was observed in a dose- and time-dependent manner, reaching a 100% death rate after 10 minutes at LC 90 and 15 minutes at LC 50 concentration. PSO also showed effective cercaricidal activity after 2 hours of exposure at a LC 50 of 290.5 ppm. Histological examination revealed multiple pathological changes in the digestive and hermaphrodite glands. The PSO had genotoxic effects on snails, which exhibited a significant increase [p≤0.05] in comet parameters compared to the control. The findings suggest that PSO has potential as a molluscicide, miracidicide, and cercaricide, making it a possible alternative to traditional molluscicides in controlling schistosomiasis.

Probing electron transfer in flavocytochrome P-450 BM3 and its component domains.

Abstract:Rapid events in the processes of electron transfer and substrate binding to cytochrome P-450 BM3 from Bacillus megaterium and its constituent haem-containing and flavin-containing domains have been investigated using stopped-flow spectrophotometry. The formation of a blue semiquinone flavin form occurs during the NADPH-dependent reduction of the flavin domain and a species with a similar absorption maximum is also seen during reduction of the holoenzyme by NADPH. EPR spectroscopy confirms the formation of the flavin semiquinone. The formation of this semiquinone is transient during fatty acid monooxygenation by the holoenzyme, but in the presence of excess NADPH the species reforms once fatty acid is exhausted. Electron transfers through the reductase domain are too rapid to limit the fatty acid monooxygenation reaction. The substrate-binding-induced haem iron spin-state shift also occurs much faster than the Kcat at 25 degrees C. The rate of first electron transfer to the haem domain is also rapid; but it is of the order of 5-10-times larger than the Kcat for the enzyme (dependent on the fatty acid used). Given that two successive electron transfers to haem iron are required for the oxygenation reaction, these rates are likely to exert some control over the rate of fatty acid oxygenation reactions. The presence of large amounts of NADPH also results in decreased rates of electron transfer from flavin to haem iron. In the difference spectrum of the active fatty acid hydroxylase, features indicative of a high-spin iron haem accumulate. These are in accordance with the presence of large amounts of an Fe(3+)-product bound enzyme during turnover and indicate that product release may also contribute to rate limitation. Taken together, these data suggest that the catalytic rate is not determined by the accumulation of a single intermediate in the reaction scheme, but rather that it is controlled in a series of steps.

Abstract:BackgroundControl of snail intermediate hosts has been proved to be a fast and efficient approach for interrupting the transmission of schistosomiasis. Some plant extracts have shown obvious molluscicidal activity, and a new compound Luo-Wei, also named tea-seed distilled saponin (TDS), was developed based on the saponins extracted from Camellia oleifera seeds. We aimed to test the molluscicidal activity of 4% TDS against the intermediate host snails in China and Egypt, and evaluate its environmental safety to non-target organisms.

Abstract:In the realm of nanotechnology, the use of algae to produce nanoparticles is an environmentally friendly, sustainable, and economically viable strategy. In the present study, the brown macroalgae Sargassum subrepandum was utilized to effectively produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Through various characterization techniques, the AgNPs' structural integrity was confirmed. AgNPs exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Fusarium equiseti . AgNPs showed cytotoxic effects on the MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma cell line with an IC 50 of 12.5 μg/ml. Treatment with AgNPs resulted in a marked reduction in cell viability, alongside evident apoptotic and necrotic morphological changes in the cancer cells. Through molecular docking studies, a deeper understanding of the interaction between AgNPs and crucial proteins related to cancer has been achieved, AgNPs showed a promising molluscicidal action on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, a Schistosoma mansoni intermediate host. The half-lethal dose (LC 50 ) of AgNPs was determined to be 0.84 mg/L. The potential consequences of its administration include potential disruptions to the glycolysis profile, as well as potential impacts on the steroidal hormone's estrogen and testosterone and certain kidney function tests. This study highlights the diverse uses of algae-synthesized AgNPs, ranging from healthcare to environmental management, demonstrating their importance in advancing nano-biotechnological solutions.

Abstract:In this study, metabolites involved in the free-biomass filtrates for three endophytic actinomycetes of Streptomyces capillispiralis Ca-1, Streptomyces zaomyceticus Oc-5, and Streptomyces pseudogriseolus Acv-11 were used as biocatalysts for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). Characterization of biosynthesized Ag-NPs was accomplished using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and particle size analyzer. The biosynthesized Ag-NPs showed maximum surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at 440 for strain Ca-1 and 450 for both strains of OC-5 and Acv-11. Nanoparticle spherical shape was recorded with size ranging from 23.77 to 63.14 nm, 11.32 to 36.72 nm, and 11.70 to 44.73 nm for Ca-1, Oc-5, and Acv-11, respectively. SEM-EDX analysis exhibited the weight percentages of 17.3, 22.3, and 48.7% for Ag-NPs synthesized by strains Ca-1, Oc-5 and Acv-11, respectively. The activities of biosynthesized Ag-NPs were concentration dependent and the obtained results confirmed the efficacy of Ag-NPs as antimicrobial agents against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well unicellular and multicellular fungi. The MIC for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), and eukaryotic microorganisms was 0.25 mM with clear zone ranging from 10.3 to 14.6 mm, while MIC for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 1.0 mM for Ag-NPs synthesized by strain Ca-1 and 0.25 mM for those synthesized by strains Oc-5 and Acv-11. Moreover, Ag-NPs exhibited antimicrobial activity against four plant pathogenic fungi represented by Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium ultimum, and Aspergillus niger at 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5 mM of Ag-NPs with different degree. In vitro assessment of the antioxidant efficacy of biosynthesized Ag-NPs was achieved by scavenging assay of H2O2, reducing power of Fe3+, or total antioxidant assay. The results showed that antioxidant activities of Ag-NPs were concentration dependent with the highest activity at Ag-NP concentration of 2.0 mM. Furthermore, the biosynthesized NPs have prospective bioinsecticidal activity against Culex pipiens and Musca domestica. Green synthesis of NPs could be quite potential for the development of new bioactive compounds used in different biomedical applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of 25% wettable powder of pyriclobenzuron sulphate (WPPS) against Oncomelania snails in hilly schistosomiasis-endemic regions and test its toxicity to fish.METHODS:In October 2020, a snail-infested setting which had been cleared was selected in Nanjian County, Yunnan Province and divided into several blocks, and the natural snail mortality was estimated. 25% WPPS was prepared into solutions at concentrations of 1 and 2 g/L, and 25% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPNES) was prepared into solutions at a concentration of 2 g/L. The different concentrations of drugs were sprayed evenly, and the same amount of water was used as blank control. Snails were surveyed using the systematic sampling method 1, 3 and 7 days post-treatment, and snail survival was observed. A fish pond was selected in Nanjian County, and 2 kg 25% WPPS was evenly sprayed on the water surface to allow the effective concentration of 20 g/L. Fish mortality was estimated 8, 24, 48 and 72 h post-treatment.RESULTS:One-day treatment with 1 and 2 g/L WPPS and 2 g/L WPNES resulted in 97.99%, 97.99% and 94.11% adjusted snail mortality rates (χ2 = 3.509 and 3.509, both P values > 0.05), and the adjusted snail mortality was all 100% 3 d post-treatment with 1 and 2 g/L WPPS and 2 g/L WPNES, while 7-day treatment with 1 and 2 g/L WPPS and 2 g/L WPNES resulted in 91.75%, 86.57% and 57.76% adjusted snail mortality rates (χ2 = 14.893 and 42.284, both P values < 0.05). Treatment with 2 g/L WPPS for 72 h resulted in a 0.67% cumulative mortality rate of fish.CONCLUSIONS:25% WPPS is effective for snail control and highly safe for fish, which is feasible for use in hilly schistosomiasis-endemic regions.

Abstract:Abstract Background Nanomaterials are used extensively because of their optical, electrical, catalytic, and mechanical properties. To understand the biological processes in an experimental organism, we aimed to highlight the comparative results obtained in the field-control, lab-control, and experimental freshwater snails ( Indoplanorbis exustus ). Terminalia arjuna bark extract was used for the synthesis of CuNPs and for characterization SEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques were used. Results The estimated LC 50 concentration for 96 h was to be 9.97 mg/L, thereafter animals were exposed further for 14 days to sub-lethal concentrations: 1/7th (1.42 mg/L), 1/5th (1.99 mg/L), 1/3rd (3.32 mg/L), and 1/2nd (4.98 mg/L). The data collected after conducting experiments on snails in the laboratory varied from the field-control snails. For comparison, the protein profile of field-control, lab-control, and experimental animals were displayed using sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and then compared based on molecular masses. The bacterial isolates obtained were all belonging to streptococcus family. All isolates were Gram-positive and catalase-negative. A significant increase in bioaccumulation of CuNPs and dose-dependent necrosis was observed after 14 days. Conclusions The results obtained from the field control animals were different from those obtained in the lab control and experimental groups upon exposure to increasing concentration of CuNPs for 14 days.
Field evaluation of the molluscicidal effect of sachongding and niclosamide against oncomelania hupensis

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of Shachongding (D imethylamine) trithacyclohexane hydrochloride and niclosamide against Oncomelania hupensis in field. Methods 90% Shachongding was immersed and sp rayed against Oncomelania hupensis in the river bank, Island areas and hill region. N iclosamide (50% wet table powder of ethnolamine salt) and fresh water were used same ways against snails as experimental control and spare control. Results The corrected snail mortality for 48 hours was 82.8% and 34.3% at a concentration of 1.0 mg/L Shachongding by immersed method for ribbed-shell snails and smooth-shell snails respectively. The corrected snail mortality in Niclosamide group was higher than that in Shachongding group under same dosage and condition (P<0.01). The corrected snail mortalities were all less than 50% at a concentration of 1.0 g/m2, 1.5 g/ m2 and 2.0 g/ m2 Shachongding by spray method for ribbed-shell snails in rive bank and island areas. The corrected snail mortality in Shachongding groups was lower than that in Niclosamide groups under same dosage and condition (P<0.01). Conclusion Niclosamide is a more effective molluscicide than Shachongding in our field experimental conditions.

Abstract:Bilharzia is a parasitic flatworm that causes schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical illness worldwide. Praziquantel (PZQ) is a commercial single treatment of schistosomiasis so alternative drugs are needed to get rid of its side effects on the liver. The current study aimed to estimate the effective role of Ficus carica nanoparticles (Fc-NPCs), silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPCs) and Ficus carica nanoparticles loaded on silver nanoparticles (Fc-Ag NPCs) on C57BL/6 black female mice infected by Schistosoma mansoni and treated with PZQ treatment. It was proved that schistosomiasis causes liver damage in addition to the PZQ is ineffective as an anti-schistosomiasis; it is recorded in the infected mice group and PZQ treated group as in liver function tests, oxidative stress markers & anti-oxidants, pro-inflammatory markers, pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic markers also in liver cells' DNA damage. The amelioration in all tested parameters has been clarified in nanoparticle-protected mice groups. The Fc-Ag NPCs + PZQ group recorded the best preemptive effects as anti-schistosomiasis. Fc-NPCs, Ag-NPCs and Fc-Ag NPCs could antagonize PZQ effects that were observed in amelioration of all tested parameters. The study showed the phytochemicals' nanoparticles groups have an ameliorated effect on the health of infected mice.
