Abstract:BACKGROUND:With the great development of liver transplantation in China, long survival and quality of life after liver transplantation have been matters of growing interest. This study was designed to investigate the impact of personality and coping skills on the quality of life after liver transplantation.METHODS:Fifty-five outpatients who had been followed up after liver transplantation at our center were assessed by general quality of life inventory (GQOLI-74), a medical coping modes questionnaire (MCMQ), an eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ), and a general condition questionnaire(GCQ).RESULTS:The score for material well-being was the lowest(63.22+/-12.67) and for psychological well-being the highest(73.43+/-12.60) in 4 dimensions of the GQOLI in post transplantation patients. Their main coping method was confrontation (21.40+/-3.70). The main characteristics of their personality were extraversation (E score 12.96+/-4.13) and neuroticism (N score 8.20+/-4.90). The total score of the GQOLI was positively correlated with confrontation and E score, and it was negatively correlated with acceptance and N score. The physical well-being positively associated with the E score. The psychological well-being was positively correlated with confrontation and L score, and was negatively correlated with acceptance, P and N score. Social well-being was positively correlated with confrontation and E score, and was negatively correlated with acceptance and N score. Material well-being was not correlated with coping methods and personality.CONCLUSION:The quality of life in post liver transplantation patients is associated with their psychological characteristics.

Abstract:This study examined depression, anxiety, coping styles, optimism, selected personality characteristics, and perception of family environment among candidates for liver transplantation (OLTX); the goal was to measure and empirically describe psychosocial factors reported to impact on the experience and outcome of transplantation. Subjects were 73 US military veterans being considered for OLTX at the VAMC‐Pittsburgh (UD) from 1994 to 1996. Psychological evaluation consisted of chart review, consultation with the transplant team, clinical interview and administration of published, standardized, and readily available psychological tests. Candidates displayed above normal levels of situational anxiety and depression, mainly adaptive coping styles, mild optimism, and positive family environments. Factor analysis of the data identified two dimensions of psychological distress, five coping styles, and three types of family environment. The composite MMPI‐2 profile for the sample shows marked elevations of the neurotic triad and moderate elevations of psychasthenia and schizophrenia scales. Psychological distress, psychopathology, coping styles, optimism, and perceptions of family environment correlate with each other in the directions suggested by the literature. These findings support previous research with empirical data; results encourage the development of consistent psychological protocols and procedures to evaluate and treat organ transplant candidates.

Abstract:Questions under study: A transplant represents a decisive event for patients and their caregivers. This article deals with the attitudes patients and their spouses have towards the transplantation. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 121 patients and their spouses were surveyed by questionnaire after a heart, lung, liver or kidney transplant. Attitudes were assessed by means of semantic differentials. Based on the results, an 'Attitudes towards Transplantation' Scale was developed. Sense of coherence (SOC-13), quality of life (Sf-36), quality of the relationship (RAS), burnout (BM) and the patient's emotional response to the transplant (TxEQ-D) were additional psychosocial variables measured in order to assess the association between the attitudes and psychosocial characteristics of transplant patients and their spouses. Results: The majority of patients and their spouses reported positive attitudes towards the transplant, including the attitudes towards medication, their perceived self and fate of being a transplant patient or spouse. Patients and spouses, however, had a negative attitude towards the transplantation in terms of stress and anxiety. Patients reported greater emotional stress from the transplant and rated their post-transplant perceived fate more negatively than their spouses. Attitudes towards the transplant were significantly associated with the sense of coherence and the quality of relationship. Conclusion: The attitudes of patients and spouses to different aspects of the transplant itself and to being a transplant patient or spouse should be deliberately reconsidered and facilitated in the psychosocial counselling with regard to the comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness of the transplant experience as well as to potential conflicts in the partnership.

Abstract:Background: This new clinical practice guideline concerns the psychosocial diagnosis and treatment of patients before and after organ transplantation. Its objective is to establish standards and to issue evidence-based recommendations that will help to optimize decision making in psychosocial diagnosis and treatment. Methods: For each key question, the literature was systematically searched in at least two databases (Medline, Ovid, Cochrane Library, and CENTRAL). The end date of each search was between August 2018 and November 2019, depending on the question. The literature search was also updated to capture recent publications, by using a selective approach. Results: Lack of adherence to immunosuppressant drugs can be expected in 25-30% of patients and increases the odds of organ loss after kidney transplantation (odds ratio 7.1). Psychosocial interventions can significantly improve adherence. Metaanalyses have shown that adherence was achieved 10-20% more frequently in the intervention group than in the control group. 13-40% of patients suffer from depression after transplantation; mortality in this group is 65% higher. The guideline group therefore recommends that experts in psychosomatic medicine, psychiatry, and psychology (mental health professionals) should be involved in patient care throughout the transplantation process. Conclusion: The care of patients before and after organ transplantation should be multidisciplinary. Nonadherence rates and comorbid mental disorders are common and associated with poorer outcomes after transplantation. Interventions to improve adherence are effective, although the pertinent studies display marked heterogeneity and a high risk of bias.
[Relationship between Stress and Resources in Patients Waiting for Organ Transplantation: Comparison of Patients with Renal and Liver Insufficiency]

Abstract:Introduction: Patients on the waiting list for organ transplantation are exposed to different stress factors and use individual resources for coping. The present study examines these factors in the context of health-related quality of life in different patient groups (patients with renal vs. liver insufficiency) and attachment pattern. Material & methods: The following variables were measured by questionnaire in a clinical sample of 103 patients waiting for a liver or kidney transplant in Thuringia: Physical complaints (GBB), Depression and Anxiety (HADS-D), Coping (EFK), Self-efficacy expectations (SWE), Resilience (RS-13), Social support (F-SozU-K-14), Health-related quality of life (SF-8) and Attachment style (BFPE). Results: Patients with liver insufficiency have a higher level of anxiety and show more often an insecure attachment style as renal failure patients. Differences between secure and insecure attached patients waiting for a kidney transplant are found in physical complaints, depression, depressive coping and self-efficacy, resilience, social support, active coping and mental health, in favor of secure attachment. Insecure attachment in patients with liver insufficiency leads to a less frequent usage of active coping strategies. Furthermore, the variables anxiety, depression, resilience, social support and dysfunctional coping mediate the relationship between attachment and mental health completely. Discussion: RESULTS suggest that psychological interventions should specifically consider the variables anxiety, depression, resilience, self-efficacy, social support, coping and attachment. Conclusion: The gained insights of this study make it possible to derive implications for interventions to reduce risk factors for the development of co-morbid mental disorders and to strengthen protective factors and thus improve the well-being and quality of life of patients.
The role of preoperative psychosocial counseling on the improvement of the recipient compliance and speed of recovery after liver transplantation - A systematic review of the literature and expert panel recommendations

Abstract:Background: Psychosocial disorders ranging from anxiety to severe psychiatric diseases and active alcohol/substance abuse are frequent in liver transplant candidates and potentially associated with worse post- transplant outcomes. Therefore, psychosocial evaluation is mandatory to optimize success after liver transplantation. However, how to carry out this evaluation, the type of intervention needed and its potential impact on patient outcome remain unclear. Objectives: To investigate whether psychosocial assessment may help in predicting risks of poor outcome; and to investigate whether psychosocial interventions may mitigate these risks and improve posttransplant outcomes, in particular compliance and speed of recovery. Data sources: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Central. Methods: Systematic review following PRISMA guidelines and recommendations using the GRADE approach derived from an international expert panel. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO CRD42021238361. Main outcomes assessed were mortality, alcohol relapse, rejection, and medication compliance. Results: Fifteen studies were analyzed including five observational comparative and ten observational noncomparative studies. Preoperative psychosocial evaluation of LT candidates was associated with higher concordance with the treatment plan (i.e., higher adherence to treatment and lower alcohol relapse) and lower rates of rejection. Psychosocial assessment tools were used in some studies to guide the evaluation, but their predictive ability remains debated, and they should not be used in isolation. Most of the interventions were studied in patients with alcohol related issues. In this context, support by specialized teams was associated with better posttransplant outcome, especially through a decrease in post-transplant alcohol relapse. Conclusions: Preoperative psychosocial assessment should be provided in order to detect patients at increased risk of poorer post-transplant outcome, in particular in terms of concordance to the treatment plan (Quality of Evidence; Low | Grade of Recommendation; Strong/For). The experts suggest that, when possible, provision of preoperative psychological assessment and concomitant interventions aimed at improving the concordance to treatment plans will positively impact the success of liver transplantation. The psychosocial needs of adolescent and young adult kidney transplant recipients, and associated interventions: a scoping review

Abstract:Background: Renal transplantation is considered the gold standard treatment for end-stage kidney disease. Adolescent and young adult kidney transplant recipients have the highest rate of graft loss amongst transplanted patients. It is largely accepted this is due to psychosocial and behavioural difficulties, which impact adherence to prescribed therapies. This phenomenon is not isolated to a particular healthcare system having been observed in multiple countries across different continents. It is a global issue of concern. We sought to review the psychosocial needs of these patients, and the interventions designed to meet these needs. Methods: A scoping review was conducted based on Arksey and O'Malley's six-stage framework. Eligibility criteria included primary studies of any type that investigated the psychosocial needs of adolescent and/or young adult renal transplant recipients or studies which examined interventions designed to address these needs. Search strategies were developed and conducted on PsycINFO, PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were critically reviewed using a descriptive-analytical narrative method. Results: Thirty-nine studies met our inclusion criteria, 30 of which related to psychosocial needs, and the remainder examined psychosocial interventions. Four main themes were derived from our analysis of psychosocial needs literature, as follows: the need for (1) emotional support, (2) acceptance, (3) direction, (4) equality in healthcare. 2 main themes emerged from analysis of psychosocial intervention literature, namely: psychosocial (1) capability, (2) assessment. Despite the evidence that graft health is strongly associated with psychosocial wellbeing, findings revealed a significant lack of literature investigating how best to meet psychosocial needs. Trends were observed amongst intervention studies, namely interventions of novel and non-evidenced based design, with the aim of improving medication adherence through organisational strategies and education. However, literature regarding psychosocial needs showed non-adherence to therapies was not simply a result of disorganisation or lack of understanding, but rather, was founded on a recipient's idiosyncratic relationship with their prescribed therapies e.g., psychological, social or financial reasons for non-adherence. Conclusions: Future research should be directed at investigating the efficacy of evidence-based interventions that empower the individual patient to overcome their specific barrier to an optimal relationship with their therapies.
Psychosocial readiness assessment for heart transplant candidates

Abstract:Background: Psychosocial evaluation for transplant suitability is required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as a condition of participation for transplant programs. There are no regulations regarding follow-up reassessment for transplant readiness after waitlisting. Objectives: An evidence-based pilot project was developed and implemented to evaluate the feasibility of psychosocial readiness assessments for waitlisted heart transplantation candidates. The primary aim was to test the feasibility of these assessments in practice from a patient and programmatic perspective. Methods: During a 12-week period, waitlisted outpatients underwent one assessment each. Socioeconomic elements of caregiver support, housing, transportation, and insurance coverage status were assessed by simple using "yes/no" questions. To assess mental health needs, the General Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) tools were utilized. Rescheduled readiness visits and no-show rates were measured. A post-implementation Qualtrics survey was administered to measure team member perceptions of feasibility. Results: A total of 57 patients were assessed during the 12-week period. The primary aim of feasibility was achieved with 93 % of visits performed with freedom from rescheduling or patient no-show to the visit. Additionally, 75 % of team members reported the readiness assessments were feasible to complete in practice. Conclusions: Addressing the non-medical and mental health needs of waitlisted heart transplant patients allows transplant programs to maintain candidates with necessary resources and care. The readiness assessments are feasible in practice and may serve to reduce untoward outcomes in the post-transplant phase by providing targeted care prior to the time of transplant.

Abstract:Psychopathology among liver and kidney transplant patients is prevalent. Although pre-surgical psychological evaluations are routinely conducted, understanding which specific psychological test to use is under-developed. The purpose of this review is to examine the psychometric properties of broadband and narrowband psychological measures in pre-surgical liver and kidney transplant evaluations. Overall, there is a paucity of research in this domain that hamper abilities to make clear recommendations on what to use alongside a clinical interview. This review highlights the need for additional research examining instruments that may predict patients' successful recovery from transplant surgery. Despite the scarcity of research, instruments that appear to be useful in this population include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–2 (MMPI-2), the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), the Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplantation (SIPAT), and the Transplant Evaluation and Rating Scale (TERS).

Abstract:Objective To analyze the data of the psychological assessment, focusing attention on the quality of life and the psychological status of patients who are listed for heart transplant. Methods All heart failure patients listed for heart transplant at the Cardiac Surgery Unit of Bari University, Italy, were evaluated from September to November 2023, by administering the Symptom Checklist‐90‐R (SCL‐90‐R) and the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF‐36). Results Overall, 27 patients were studied. Mean age was 60 years, 88% were males. One third of the patients showed a clinically significant overall mental distress. The symptoms leading to domains such as somatization (55.55%), anxiety (40.74%) and depression (33.33%) were frequently observed. The majority of the population studied (96.30%) showed low levels of perceived physical health status, while 59,62% of them presented levels of perceived physical health status below normal ranges. Conclusions Heart transplant candidates show elements of overall mental distress and low quality of life related to physical health status.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Depression/anxiety, impaired Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and coping and resilience structures, are associated with increased mortality/poor outcome in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients before (CKD/pre-KT) and after kidney (CKD-T) transplantation. Less is known about prevalence rates of psychiatric symptoms and impaired HRQoL of non-transplanted compared with transplanted patients.METHODS: In a cross-sectional study comparing 101 CKD/pre-KT patients with 151 cadaveric-transplanted (CKD-T) patients, we examined prevalence of depression/anxiety (HADS questionnaire) and coping, resilience and HRQoL (SF-12, Resilience-Scale and FKV-questionnaire).RESULTS: The prevalence of both depressive and anxiety symptoms was not significantly different between different pre-/and CKD-T patient groups. In CKD-T no significant relations of coping strategies with kidney function were identified. Furthermore, the Resilience Scales for acceptance and competence did not suggest any differences between the CKD/pre-KT and CKD-T subgroup. In the CKD/pre-KT patients, significant correlations were identified between the acceptance subscale and partnership, as well as between the competence subscale and older age/partnership.CONCLUSIONS: Both the CKD/pre-KT and CKD-T patients exhibited notable impairments in the HRQoL which which showed a comparable pattern of results. KT itself does not appear to be the main risk factor for the development of mental impairments.

Abstract:<p>Research demonstrates that psychological factors are important for positive transplant outcomes, though there is little literature that synthesizes these factors in a comprehensive model among pediatric kidney transplant patients. This review analyzes psychological and psychosocial factors related to medical outcomes and overall well‐being post‐transplant by utilizing the PPPHM and referencing the existing literature on risk and resilience. Pediatric kidney transplant recipients are more susceptible to mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD, as well as developmental and neurocognitive delays, compared to healthy peers. Complex medical care and psychosocial needs for patients have implications for family functioning, parental and sibling mental health, and youth readiness to transition to adult care. It is important to carefully monitor patient functioning with empirically validated tools and to intervene in a multidisciplinary setting as early as possible to identify patients at risk and reduce potential negative impact. Psychologists are uniquely trained to assess and address these issues and are a valuable component of multidisciplinary, culturally competent care. While research in this expansive field is improving, more data are needed to establish gold standard approaches to mental health and psychosocial care in this population.</p>

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The purpose of kidney transplant is to improve the quality of life of recipients. Improving quality of life of transplant recipients is crucial for their treatment adherence and transplant success. However, it is known that psychosocial problems experienced by kidney transplant recipients after transplant can threaten quality of life and increase mortality and morbidity rates. Therefore, in this study, we examined up-to-date literature and recommendations on psychological problems experienced by recipients after kidney transplant.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies were identified by searching PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases for the past 5 years. The search terms used included "depression, anxiety," "kidney transplant recipients," "kidney transplantation," psychosocial problems," and "psychosocial issues."RESULTS: Our search of relevant databases resulted in 1663 articles imported into EndNote: 243 from PubMed, 1198 from ScienceDirect, and 222 from Web of Science. Twenty-one studies that met the inclusion criteria were included.CONCLUSIONS: Recent studies have indicated that kidney transplant recipients experience depression, anxiety, and stress during the posttransplant period. Support is recommended for recipients after kidney transplant, and interventions aimed at reducing depression, anxiety, and stress are needed.

Kidney Transplant Candidacy: Addressing Common Medical and Psychosocial Barriers to Transplant

Abstract:Improving access to kidney transplants remains a priority for the transplant community. However, many medical, psychosocial, geographic, and socioeconomic barriers exist that prevent or delay transplantation for candidates with certain conditions. There is a lack of consensus regarding how to best approach many of these issues and barriers, leading to heterogeneity in transplant centers' management and acceptance practices for a variety of pretransplant candidate issues. In this review, we address several of the more common contemporary patient medical and psychosocial barriers frequently encountered by transplant programs. The barriers discussed here include kidney transplant candidates with obesity, older age, prior malignancy, cardiovascular disease, history of nonadherence, and cannabis use. Improving understanding of how to best address these specific issues can empower referring providers, transplant programs, and patients to address these issues as necessary to progress toward eventual successful transplantation.
Quality of Life in Patients 20-31 Years After Heart Transplantation

Abstract:Background: Survival rates after heart transplantation (HTx) have significantly improved over the last decades. There is a growing need to understand the long-term psychological and somatic outcomes, which constitute quality of life (QoL), for these long-term survivors. Methods: The QoL of patients (N = 75) living 20-31 years (M = 24.9 years, SD = 2.3 years) after orthotopic HTx was evaluated. In a first step, a detailed overview of the patients' somatic condition was assessed. Secondly, patients were compared to 58 control subjects in terms of self-reported QoL (SF-36) and psychological domains (GBB-24; HADS). Finally, a cluster analysis was conducted to identify patterns within the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and to relate them to somatic, psychosocial, and demographic variables. Results: 95.7% of the HTx-patients were in NYHA functional class I or II, and only 15.2% had a reduced LVEF. Compared to controls, long-term HTx patients had significantly lower scores on the physical component summary (PCS) of QoL and on the GBB-24 but not in the mental component summary (MCS) of QoL, or anxiety and depression (HADS). Clustering revealed two distinct groups of patients characterized by high versus low functioning and different levels of social support. Conclusions: Long-term survivors have a good functional, cardiac, and mental status, but report a lower physical QoL and higher levels of subjective complaints. The importance of social support for HTx recipients is once again highlighted.

Methods: We identified heart, lung, liver, or kidney transplant recipients assessed with the SIPAT pre-transplantation and transplanted between June 1, 2008, and July 31, 2011, at our institution. We analyzed prospectively accumulated psychosocial and medical outcomes at 1 year of follow-up. Results: 217 patients were identified and included in the analysis. The primary outcomes of organ failure and mortality occurred in 12 and 21 patients, respectively, and were not significantly associated with the pre-transplant SIPAT scores. On the other hand, SIPAT scores were significantly correlated with the probability of poor medical and psychosocial outcomes (secondary outcomes). In fact, higher SIPAT scores predicted higher rates of rejection episodes (Spearman ρ = 0.15, 95% 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.02-0.28, p = .023), medical hospitalizations (ρ = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.16-0.41, p < .001), infection rates (p = .020), psychiatric decompensation (p = .005), and support system failure (area under the curve = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.60-0.79, p < .001). The relationship with nonadherence suggested a trend, but no statistical significance was observed (area under the curve = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.50-0.71, p = .058). Conclusions: Study outcomes suggest that SIPAT is a promising pre-transplantation assessment tool that helps identify candidate's areas of psychosocial vulnerability and whose scores are associated with both psychosocial and medical outcomes after transplantation.

Abstract:The psychosocial assessment is an essential component of the living kidney donor (LKD) evaluation. However, it remains uncertain how specific psychosocial factors impact LKD eligibility. We performed a retrospective chart review of LKD candidates who initiated the evaluation process and who had completed a required, in-person licensed social work (LSW) visit. LSW notes were reviewed for frequency of psychosocial factors that may impact the success of LKD candidate approval by the selection committee. 325 LKD candidates were included in the study: 104 not-approved and 221 approved. Not-approved LKD candidates were more likely to receive a negative family reaction to wanting to donate than approved LKD candidates (8.7% vs 1.4%, p < 0.01). On multivariate analysis, Black race, history of psychiatric illness, highest level of education being high school, and high psychosocial risk score assignment were all associated with a lower odds ratio of being approved. The majority of not-approved LKD candidates were disqualified for medical reasons ( N = 76, 73.1%). In conclusion, psychosocial factors impact donation even after LKD candidates make it to an in-person evaluation.

Abstract:Abstract Background Organ transplantation from donors with hepatitis C viremia (HCV) to recipients without HCV (HCV D+/R−) has excellent medical outcomes. Less is known about the psychosocial impact and experiences of HCV D+/R- recipients, particularly outside of clinical trials. Methods We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 24 HCV D+/R- recipients (kidney n = 8; lung n = 7; liver n = 5; heart n = 3; simultaneous heart and kidney n = 1) who received transplants outside of clinical trials and were treated for HCV post-transplant to assess their experiences and perspectives. We used thematic analysis to analyze the interviews. Results Interviewees’ reasons for accepting an HCV D + organ were based on perceived benefits and confidence in the effectiveness of HCV treatment. The majority (62%) received HCV treatment within one month post-transplant (range: 1 day - 2 months). Most interviewees reported positive transplant outcomes, including reduced wait times and improved survival, health, physical activity, and quality of life. Overall, themes and experiences did not differ significantly between different organ transplant types. Generally, interviewees did not perceive stigma from those aware of the HCV D + transplant; yet, disclosure was selective and a few recipients reported concerns from family members about post-transplant HCV transmission risk. Other common concerns included treatment costs and delays, which were not always anticipated by recipients. Conclusions Our findings suggest that HCV D+/R- kidney, liver, heart and lung transplant recipients outside of clinical trials had overall positive experiences. However, HCV transmission risk, treatments costs, and treatment delays were a source of concern that might be mitigated with targeted pre-transplant education.

Abstract:Introduction: There is growing awareness, yet scant prospective evidence that pretransplant (TX) psychosocial factors may predict post-TX outcome. We examined which pre-TX psychosocial factors predict post-TX nonadherence with immunosuppression (NA) and clinical outcomes in heart, liver, and lung TX. Methodology: We prospectively followed 141 patients (28 heart, 61 liver, and 52 lung) from pre-TX until 1 year post-TX. Multivariable analyses determined which pre-TX factors (i.e., anxiety, depression, personality traits, social support, adherence with medication, and smoking status) predict poor post-TX outcome (i.e., NA, late acute rejection, graft loss, and resource utilization), controlling for medical predictors of poor outcome. Results: Pre-TX self-reported medication nonadherence (odds ratio [OR]=7.9), lower received social support (OR=0.9), a higher education (OR=2.7), and lower "conscientiousness" (OR=0.8) were independent predictors of post-TX NA. Not living in a stable relationship predicted graft loss (OR=4.9). Pre-TX medication NA was the only predictor for presence of late acute rejection (OR=4.4). No other pre-TX predictors for poor outcome could be found. Conclusion: This is the first prospective study demonstrating that selected pre-TX psychosocial factors predict post-TX NA and poor clinical outcome, implying that pre-TX screening should include this set of factors in addition to traditional medical criteria.
Personal Resources and Expectations and Health Behaviors Among Solid Organ Transplant Recipients-A Multicenter Study

Abstract:Background: The long-term success of organ transplantation (Tx) depends on the transplant recipient's ability to self-manage symptoms, treatment, lifestyle changes, and psychosocial consequences. Health behavior (HB) determinants include personality traits such as optimism, self-efficacy, and health locus of control. Purpose: Assessing the relationship between personal resources and expectations and health behaviors of organ transplant recipients. Material and methods: The study was conducted between 01/04/2018 and 30/10/2019 at 3 transplant centers in Poland. The study group consisted of 243 Tx recipients of kidney, heart, liver, and lung. The Health Behavior Inventory, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC), General Self-Efficacy Scale, Dispositional Optimism Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to collect data. Findings: The study group had medium levels of dispositional optimism (mean 15) and high levels of self-efficacy (mean 30.18). The MHLC scale was dominated by a belief in the influence of others and an internal locus of control over one's health. The respondents presented a high level of HB (mean 92.09). A positive relationship was found between personal resources (self-efficacy and optimism), MHLC and HB. The presence of depression and anxiety negatively affected personal resources and internal locus of health control and HB in terms of a positive mental attitude. Type of Tx differentiated internal locus of health control and HB. Predictors of HB were dispositional optimism, self-efficacy, influence of others with health locus of control, symptoms of depression, age and time since transplantation-explaining between 6.1% and 14.5% of health behavior categories. Conclusions: To improve health practices among organ recipients, strengthening their personal resources is recommended. It is necessary to form an internal locus of control for adherence to positive HB.
