What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to effectively confine noble metal single atoms by graphitic carbon nitride (g - C₃N₄) in single - atom catalysts (SACs) to improve their photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the research objectives are: 1. **Understand the single - atom confinement effect**: Explore the confinement effect of noble metal single atoms (such as Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Os, Ir, Pt, Au) on monolayer g - C₃N₄, especially the stability of these metal single atoms on g - C₃N₄ and the changes in their electronic structures. 2. **Optimize the geometric structure**: Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, determine the adsorption sites that are most conducive to the stability of noble metal single atoms, and analyze the geometric structure characteristics of these sites. 3. **Improve photocatalytic performance**: Study the influence of noble metal single atoms on the band structure of g - C₃N₄, especially the change in the conduction band position and the narrowing of the band gap, and how these changes affect the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and photocatalytic activity. 4. **Provide theoretical support**: Provide a theoretical basis for the design of new - type photocatalysts that are efficient, stable, and highly selective, especially for the improvement in visible - light response and photocatalytic activity. Through these studies, the paper aims to reveal the enhancement mechanism of the single - atom confinement effect on the photocatalytic performance of g - C₃N₄, and provide guidance for catalyst design in practical applications.
