Abstract:Reverse osmosis through a polyamide (PA) membrane is an important technique for water desalination and purification. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the biofouling mechanism (i.e., protein adsorption) and nonequilibrium steady-state water transfer of a cross-linked PA membrane. Our results demonstrated that the PA membrane surface's roughness is a key factor of surface's biofouling, as the lysozyme protein adsorbed on the surface's cavity site displays extremely low surface diffusivity, blocking water passage, and decreasing water flux. The adsorbed protein undergoes secondary structural changes, particularly in the pressure-driven flowing conditions, leading to strong protein-surface interactions. Our simulations were able to present water permeation close to the experimental conditions with a pressure difference as low as 5 MPa, while all the electrolytes, which are tightly surrounded by hydration water, were effectively rejected at the membrane surfaces. The analysis of the self-intermediate scattering function demonstrates that the dynamics of water molecules coordinated with hydrogen bonds is faster inside the pores than during the translation across the pores. The pressure difference applied shows a negligible effect on the water structure and content inside the membrane but facilitates the transportation of hydrogen-bonded water molecules through the membrane's sub-nanopores with a reduced coordination number. The linear relationship between the water flux and the pressure difference demonstrates the applicability of continuum hydrodynamic principles and thus the stability of the membrane structure.

Abstract:The influence of the spacer filament on the flow and mass transfer in reverse osmosis seawater desalination membrane is studied by the lattice Boltzmann method. The effects of Reynolds number ( Re ), blockage ratio ( β ), and osmotic pressure (Δ P ) on the concentration polarization, permeate flux, the drag and lift force on the spacer, and the shear stress on the membrane surface are studied, respectively. The results show that the spacer near the membrane surface at large Re can effectively prevent the formation of the concentration boundary layer. The vortices near the membrane surface bring the solutes into the bulk flow, then reducing the concentration polarization and improving the mass transfer efficiency. In addition, the changes of the flow pattern, the mean value of the drag coefficient ( C d ), the lift coefficient ( C L ), and the skin friction coefficient ( f skin ) are explored, respectively. The drag coefficient ( C d ) increases with the increase of β and decreases with Re , the permeate flux across the membrane and the increasing of the osmotic pressure will slightly reduce the drag and lift coefficient.

Abstract:A three-dimensional model for the simulation of concentration polarisation in a full-scale spiral wound reverse osmosis (RO) membrane element was developed. The model considered the coupled effect of complex spacer geometry, pressure drop and membrane filtration. The simulated results showed that, at a salt concentration of 10,000 mg/L and feed pressure of 10.91 bar, permeate flux decreased from 27.6 L/(m2 h) (LMH) at the module inlet to 24.1 LMH at the module outlet as a result of salt accumulation in the absence of a feed spacer. In contrast, the presence of the spacer increased pressure loss along the membranes, and its presence created vortices and enhanced fluid velocity at the boundary layer and led to a minor decrease in flux to 26.5 LMH at the outlet. This paper underpins the importance of the feed spacer’s role in mitigating concentration polarisation in full-scale spiral wound modules. The model can be used by both the industry and by academia for improved understanding and accurate presentation of mass transfer phenomena of full-scale RO modules by different commercial manufacturers that cannot be achieved by experimental characterization of the mass transfer coefficient or by CFD modelling of simplified 2D flow channels.

Abstract:A numerical model is presented and experimentally validated for predicting the local concentration polarization and the related separation performance of nanofiltration (NF) system. The model combines computational fluid dynamics for describing the transport phenomena in NF channel, with Spiegler‐Kedem‐Katchalsky model for considering the permeation properties through NF membrane. Particular attention is given to the modeling of spatially varied solute rejection and solute transport through membrane, representing essential distinctions from the modeling of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Also, an experimental‐numerical framework is proposed to determine model parameters related to solute transport, including reflection coefficient and solute permeability as functions of feed solute concentration. The usefulness of this model is highlighted by predicting concentration polarization under different conditions related to operations, membrane systems (NF vs. RO), and solute types (NaCl vs. MgSO4). Abstract:Development of energy-efficient and low-cost desalination techniques is of pivotal importance, and reverse osmosis (RO) is regarded as one of the most promising solutions to tackle the world water crisis and has been widely deployed for large-scale and distributed water desalination. Graphene with nanopores was considered as a promising desalination membrane due to its unique properties. However, the intrinsic complexity of the desalination process, together with the various tunable properties of the membranes/nanopores themselves, makes accurate prediction of the performance or designing of new materials challenging. Machine learning (ML) techniques are superior in analyzing physical processes from multiple aspects, which could facilitate the rational design of high-performance desalination membranes. In this work, it was discovered that salt rejection mainly depends on the pore shape, pore area, and applied pressure and that water permeation mainly depends on the pore area and applied pressure from the ML study. The physical-chemical analysis based on the ion density and water density along the nanopore offers us a deep understanding of the effect of the pore shape on salt rejection and water permeation. In light of the results of ML and the analysis of physicochemical properties, we design the graphene pore with a particular pore shape, which could achieve high water permeation with high salt rejection. ML combined with high-throughput computation methods could help us design the material with excellent performance for desalination.

Abstract:Feed spacer is a key component of the spiral wound membrane module. However, the membrane deformation induced by the feed spacer under high pressure presents a significant challenge to long-term operation of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. This deformation alters the fluid hydraulic behavior within the feed channel and its underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD) was conducted to illustrate the impact of the feed spacer geometry on membrane deformation under high pressure and the resultant changes in hydraulic performances. The simulated results revealed that an increase in the mesh angle and a reduction in the filament diameter and length, led to a higher degree of membrane deformation. In addition, larger mesh angles and filament diameters, and shorter the filament lengths could significantly enhance the performance of the spiral wound membrane (SWM) module. This study provides an insight for the design of feed spacer to optimize the performance of reverse osmosis membrane module.

Abstract:This study numerically investigates the impacts of an elliptical spacer on the flow and mass transfer within a desalination membrane channel. We consider the effects of the fluid Reynolds number, the elliptical spacer position yin/H, the flow attack angle θ and the aspect ratio B of spacer on the fluid flow, concentration polarization, and permeation flux. Our findings reveal that the elliptical spacers can improve both the mass transfer and permeation flux compared with the traditional circular spacers. Placing the spacer near the membrane surface effectively disrupts the concentration boundary layer, thereby amplifying the local concentration polarization surrounding the spacer. A single recirculation vortex behind the spacer induces numerous large vortices around the membrane, resulting in a significant increment in freshwater production. By changing θ and B, the system's stability can be reduced, potentially leading to a 16.0% increment in permeation flux when compared with the traditional circular spacers. Furthermore, the drag and lift coefficients acting on the elliptical spacer are greater than those of circular spacers, which is the main reason for the transition of flow condition. Our findings provide a reference for the design of the efficient structures in reverse osmosis membranes.

Multiscale Analysis of Permeable and Impermeable Wall Models for Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination

Abstract:In recent years, high permeability membranes (HPMs) have attracted wide attention in seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination. However, the limitation of hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics for conventional spiral wound modules defeats the advantage of HPMs. Feed spacer design is one of the effective ways to improve module performance by enhancing permeation flux and mitigating membrane fouling. Herein, we propose a multiscale modeling framework that integrates a three-dimensional multi-physics model with a permeable wall and an impermeable wall, respectively, at a sub-millimeter scale and a system-level model at a meter scale. Using the proposed solution framework, a thorough quantitative analysis at different scales is conducted and it indicates that the average errors of the friction coefficient and the Sherwood number using the impermeable wall model are less than 2% and 9%, respectively, for commercial SWRO membrane (water permeability 1 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and HPMs (3 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, 5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 10 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) systems, compared to the predictions using the permeable wall model. Using both the permeable and impermeable wall models, the system-level simulations, e.g., specific energy consumption, average permeation flux, and the maximum concentration polarization factor at the system inlet are basically the same (error < 2%), while the impermeable wall model has a significant advantage in computational efficiency. The multiscale framework coupling the impermeable wall model can be used to guide the efficient and accurate optimal spacer design and system design for HPMs using, e.g., a machine learning approach.
Inverse design of V-shape feed spacer for batch and semi-batch reverse osmosis

Abstract:In recent years, batch and semi-batch reverse osmosis (RO) processes have received wide attention because of their internal staging feature. However their performance is severely compromised by salt retention induced by incomplete flushing, which leads to elevated salt concentration, uplifted peak pressure, and extra power consumption. Herein we adopt transient 3-D computational fluid dynamics to systematically analyze the effect of the V-shape feed spacer geometries on hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics. After a sensitivity analysis of all geometric parameters, a heuristic optimization framework is proposed for inverse design of the feed spacer. Using the optimized feed spacer, flushing efficacies after one displacement volume are 0.936, 0.962, 0.969 and 0.974 respectively for one, three, five and seven membrane elements connected in series (whereas 0.884, 0.926, 0.942 and 0.952 for commercial spacers), which help to mitigate membrane scaling and fouling. Moreover, the optimized spacer has a pressure drop per meter 73 % lower than that of the commercial spacer. If used in conjunction with high permeability membranes, batch RO and semi-batch RO could save 29.9 % and 24.1 % specific energy consumption relative to conventional one-stage seawater RO.

Abstract:To understand the spatial variations of the desalination behavior, a mathematical model is systematically formulated to simulate a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) with the hollow fiber module for desalination. The model equation for the entire module is derived by integrating the mass, momentum and energy balances on both feed and permeate sides with the permeate flux across the membrane. The property variations of feed and permeate sides along the length of the membrane module are thoroughly simulated. Sensitivity of the permeate flux and the thermal efficiency along the fiber length to operating conditions is further investigated over a range of temperature and flow rate. It is shown that both permeate flux and thermal efficiency decrease along the fiber length as the feed gets cooled down. Although the velocity variations of both streams are not big, the flow rate ratio of the hot feed to the cold solution has a dramatic impact on the distribution of the permeate flux and the thermal efficiency along the fiber length. The effect analysis could potentially be applied to optimal design and scale-up of hollow fiber DCMD modules.

Abstract:<p>Microalgae (Scenedesmus obliquus) dewatering using forward osmosis membrane has received considerable attention for its possible application in biofuel generation. To investigate the filtration performance by analyzing permeate water flux, five different velocities (0.23 m/s, 0.31 m/s, 0.40 m/s, 0.55 m/s, 0.66 m/s) were selected in a bench-scale experiments. The results showed that the optimal flux was with 0.55 m/s velocity. Moreover, the same velocities (0.23 m/s, 0.31 m/s, 0.40 m/s, 0.55 m/s, 0.66 m/s) and three various spacer positions (0.3 mm, 1 mm and 2 mm away from the membrane) were simulated employing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results showed that the pressure and velocity distribution were affected by the velocities at the module inlet and the spacer configuration. And the 0.55 m/s velocity was confirmed, while the CFD revealed that the velocity distribution was relatively uniform and exerted a higher pressure on the membrane, and 0.55 m/s velocity agreed with the experiment in optimal operation. As for the spacer configurations, they were evenly distributed in the channel and the optimum structures occurred when the spacers were 1 mm away from the membrane. The spacer is beneficial for alleviating external concentration polarization (ECP) during osmosis process.</p>

Abstract:Spiral-wound modules have been the most common configuration of packing flat-sheet membranes since the early development of polyamide (PA) membranes for water treatment applications. Conventional spiral-wound modules (SWMs) for desalination applications typically consist of several leaf sets, with each leaf set comprising feed spacers, membranes, and a permeate carrier (PC) wrapped around a permeate-collecting tube. The membrane area that can be packed into a given module diameter is limited by the overall leaf set thickness, restricting module productivity for a given membrane permeability. We describe here a novel industrial-scale method for successfully coating the polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) support layer directly onto a permeate carrier, instead of conventional non-woven fabric, as a precursor to the polyamide TFC coating, resulting in twofold benefits: (a) drastically simplifying the membrane fabrication process by eliminating the use of non-woven fabric and (b) increasing the throughput of each membrane module by facilitating the packing of a larger membrane area in a standard module housing. By combining the permeate carrier and membrane into a single sheet, the need for the non-woven support layer was eliminated, leading to a significantly reduced leaf set thickness, enabling a much larger membrane area to be packed in a given volume, leading to lower energy consumption per cubic meter of produced water. Molecular-weight cutoff (MWCO) values in the range of 36–96 kDa were found to be dependent on PC thickness and material. Nevertheless, the reinforced membranes were successfully fabricated with a ~9% reduction in membrane leaf thickness compared to a conventional membrane. Preliminary trials of coating a thin-film composite PA layer resulted in defect-free reverse osmosis (RO) membranes with a salt rejection of 94% and a flux of 40 L m−2 h−1 when tested against a 2000 mg/L NaCl feed solution at an operating pressure of 15 bar. Results from the testing of the 1812 and 2514 elements validated the novel concept and paved the way for further improvements towards full-scale RO membranes with the potential to be the next low-energy workhorse of the water industry.

Abstract:The reverse osmosis membrane module is an integral element of a desalination system as it determines the overall performance of the desalination plant. The fraction of clean water that can be recovered via this process is often limited by salt precipitation which plays a critical role in its sustainability. In this work, we present a model to study the complex interplay between flow, transport and precipitation processes in reverse osmosis membranes, which together influence recovery and in turn process sustainability. A reactive porous interface model describes the membrane with a dynamic evolving porosity and permeability to capture the scaling and clogging of the membrane. An open-source finite-volume numerical solver is implemented within the OpenFOAM library and numerical tests are presented here showing the effect of the various parameters of the model and the robustness of the model to describe a wide range of operating conditions.

Abstract:Inorganic material (scale) precipitation on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is a serious issue in plants because performance recovery via cleaning is challenging, and the replacement expenses are enormous. This study investigated the calcium sulfate scaling phenomena on membranes using a flat membrane cell with a spacer to model a spiral wound-type RO element. Subsequently, the mass transfer coefficient of the flat membrane cell with the spacer and the convergent value of permeate flux due to solute precipitation were determined. The dimensionless equation for the mass transfer coefficient of the cell with the spacer could be expressed using the dimensionless equation for the mass transfer coefficient of a flat membrane cell without a spacer. The behavior in permeate flux due to the precipitation of calcium sulfate on the RO membrane of the cell with the spacer was analyzed based on the scaling-based critical flux and scaling index, which discriminate scale precipitation. Finally, scale precipitation experiments were conducted by varying spacers and the operating conditions of pressure, solute concentration, temperature, and Reynolds number; the permeate flux was confirmed to converge to the scaling-based critical flux, and the scaling index could discriminate the operating condition area of scale precipitation.

Abstract:Abstract Computational fluid dynamics simulations are conducted to study the performance of the sweeping gas membrane distillation module (SGMD) for seawater desalination process. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of membrane properties on the membrane flux performance and temperature and concentration polarization characteristics of the module. CFD simulations are conducted in a three-dimensional module to characterize the steady-state velocity, temperature and concentration field in the feed and permeate channel. The Reynolds number for the feed and the permeate stream are set to 900 and 2000, and thus the laminar flow model is adapted for each channel. The effects of the porosity and the membrane thickness are varied while the pore size is fixed for the parametric study. It is revealed that the membrane thickness has a profound influence while the membrane porosity has a slight influence on the SGMD performance. We observed a high level of temperature polarization within the module, which adversely affects the system performance. Remedies for mitigating temperature polarization should be considered for future studies.

Abstract:Spiral-wound reverse osmosis membrane elements have been widely applied in household water purification which usually demand a high water recovery rate. Membrane scaling remains an intractable hurdle which would deteriorate the performance of membrane elements. In this study, we developed a novel feed channel with diagonal flow direction, for which the performances were examined by filtration experiments on real membrane elements and the impacts of channel configuration were analyzed via the coupling of computational fluid dynamics simulation with response surface methodology. The results showed that the membrane element with the novel diagonal-flow feed channels exhibited a higher water flux along with lower declining rate and higher salt rejection than the conventional one with axial flow direction. The alteration of water flow direction could considerably increase the average cross-flow velocity in the channel, thus enhancing mass transfer and reducing concentration polarization. For a targeted water recovery of 75% and water flux of ~45 L/(m2·h), the optimal configuration regarding the width ratios of the wide and the narrow openings at inlet/outlet of diagonal-flow feed channels are suggested within the range of 20–43% and 5–10%, respectively. The diagonal-flow feed channel has a promising application prospect for membrane scaling control.

Abstract:Forward osmosis (FO) is a low-energy treatment process driven by osmosis to induce the separation of water from dissolved solutes/foulants through the membrane in hydraulic pressure absence while retaining all of these materials on the other side. All these advantages make it an alternative process to reduce the disadvantages of traditional desalination processes. However, several critical fundamentals still require more attention for understanding them, most notably the synthesis of novel membranes that offer a support layer with high flux and an active layer with high water permeability and solute rejection from both solutions at the same time, and a novel draw solution which provides low solute flux, high water flux, and easy regeneration. This work reviews the fundamentals controlling the FO process performance such as the role of the active layer and substrate and advances in the modification of FO membranes utilizing nanomaterials. Then, other aspects that affect the performance of FO are further summarized, including types of draw solutions and the role of operating conditions. Finally, challenges associated with the FO process, such as concentration polarization (CP), membrane fouling, and reverse solute diffusion (RSD) were analyzed by defining their causes and how to mitigate them. Moreover, factors affecting the energy consumption of the FO system were discussed and compared with reverse osmosis (RO). This review will provide in-depth details about FO technology, the issues it faces, and potential solutions to those issues to help the scientific researcher facilitate a full understanding of FO technology.

Solving the fouling mechanisms in composite membranes for water purification: An advance approach

Abstract:With the increasing population worldwide more wastewater is created by human activities and discharged into the waterbodies. This is causing the contamination of aquatic bodies, thus disturbing the marine ecosystems. The rising population is also posing a challenge to meet the demands of fresh drinking water in the water-scarce regions of the world, where drinking water is made available to people by desalination process. The fouling of composite membranes remains a major challenge in water desalination. In this innovative study, we present a novel probabilistic approach to analyse and anticipate the predominant fouling mechanisms in the filtration process. Our establishment of a robust theoretical framework hinges upon the utilization of both the geometric law and the Hermia model, elucidating the concept of resistance in series (RIS). By manipulating the transmembrane pressure, we demonstrate effective management of permeate flux rate and overall product quality. Our investigations reveal a decrease in permeate flux in three distinct phases over time, with the final stage marked by a significant reduction due to the accumulation of a denser cake layer. Additionally, an increase in transmembrane pressure leads to a correlative rise in permeate flux, while also exerting negative effects such as membrane ruptures. Our study highlights the minimal immediate impact of the intermediate blocking mechanism (n = 1) on permeate flux, necessitating continuous monitoring for potential long-term effects. Additionally, we note a reduced membrane selectivity across all three fouling types (n = 0, n = 1.5, n = 2). Ultimately, our findings indicate that the membrane undergoes complete fouling with a probability of P = 0.9 in the presence of all three fouling mechanisms. This situation renders the membrane unable to produce water at its previous flow rate, resulting in a significant reduction in the desalination plant's productivity. I have demonstrated that higher pressure values notably correlate with increased permeate flux across all four membrane types. This correlation highlights the significant role of TMP in enhancing the production rate of purified water or desired substances through membrane filtration systems. Our innovative approach opens new perspectives for water desalination management and optimization, providing crucial insights into fouling mechanisms and proposing potential strategies to address associated challenges.

Abstract:A substantial amount of Earth’s water is inadequate for human consumption while local demand is outstripping traditional supplies in many world regions; thereby, brackish and seawater treatment has become a prerequisite. This investigation suggested a complete design of an RO-based desalination filter with a multilayer biomimetic membrane. The study demonstrated a comprehensive method for experimentally fabricating a proprietary biomaterial-based multilayer nano-porous membrane. This analysis revealed that Silk Nano-Fibril (SNF) and Hydroxyapatite (HAP) extracted from Bombyx Mori silkworm cocoons may be utilized to manufacture highly methodical multilayer membranes by incorporating protein-self-assembly and in-situ-bio-mineralization. Membrane’s aquaporin layer containing lipid-bilayers has rapid water permeability and high efficacy at eliminating salt ions and contaminants. The 4 µm thick SNF/HAP membrane showed a considerable decrease in salinity, with a salt rejection of 93.33%. The proposed membrane had a saline water permeability of 6.58 LMH/bar, almost 61.09% higher than conventional TFC membranes. Hydrophobic barrier and spiral-wrapped filter architecture of the membrane enable low fouling and self-cleaning properties. The schematic filter design and biomimetic fabrication of the SNF/HAP membrane have formulated a conceptual framework that might direct to the broad-scale, low-cost RO water purification filters, increasing the efficiency of water desalination and boosting the effectiveness of water treatment technologies to reduce potable water scarcity.
