Abstract:Since discovered in 2011, transition metal carbides or nitrides (MXenes) have attracted enormous attention due to their unique properties. Morphology regulation strategies assembling 2D MXene sheets into 3D architecture have endowed the as‐formed porous MXene with a better performance in various fields. However, the direct patterning strategy for the porous MXene into integration with multifunctional and multichannel electronic devices still needs to be investigated. The metal‐assisted electro‐gelation method the authors propose can directly generate porous‐structured MXene hydrogel with a tunable feature. By electrolyzing the sacrificial metal, the released metal cations initiate the electro‐gelation process during which electrostatic interactions occur between cations and the MXene sheets. A high spatial resolution down to micro‐meter level is achieved utilizing the method, enabling high‐performance hydrogels with more complex architectures. Electronics prepared through this metal‐assisted electro‐gelation process have shown promising applications of the porous MXene in energy and biochemical sensing fields. Energy storage devices with a capacitance at 33.3 mF cm−2 and biochemical sensors show prominent current responses towards metabolites (sensitivity of H2O2: 165.6 µA mm−1 cm−2; sensitivity of DA: 212 nA µm−1 cm−2), suggesting that the metal‐assisted electro‐gelation method will become a prospective technique for advanced fabrication of MXene‐based devices.

Abstract:MXenes have exhibited potential for application in flexible devices owing to their remarkable electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. Printing strategies have emerged as a facile route for additive manufacturing of MXene-based devices, which relies on the rational design of functional inks with appropriate rheological properties. Herein, aqueous MXene/xanthan gum hybrid inks with tunable viscosity, excellent printability, and long-term stability are designed. Screen-printed flexible MXene films using such hybrid inks exhibit a high conductivity up to 4.8 x 10(4) S m(-1), which is suitable to construct multifunctional devices mainly including electromagnetic shielding, Joule heaters, and piezoresistive sensors. The average electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding value can reach to 40.1 dB. In the Joule heater, the heating rate of printed MXene film can reach 20 degrees C s(-1) under a driving voltage of 4 V, with a highest steady-state temperature of 130.8 degrees C. An MXene-based piezoresistive sensor prepared by the printing interdigital electrode also presents good sensing performance with a short response time of 130 ms and wide pressure region up to 30 kPa. As a result, screen-printed MXene film exhibits reinforced multifunctional performance, which is promising for application in the next-generation of intelligent and wearable devices.

Abstract:Abstract MXenes are interesting 2D materials that have been considered as attractive frontier materials for potential applications in the fields of energy and electronic devices due to their excellent optoelectronic properties including metallic conductivity and high optical transparency. However, it is still challenging to achieve compatibility for the as‐synthesized MXene nanosheets with simple solution‐deposition and patterning processes because of their limited solubility in many solvents. Here, a promising strategy is developed for obtaining alcohol‐dispersible MXene nanosheets suitable for all‐printed electronics while enhancing their electrical conductivity. This strategy includes a trifluoroacetic acid treatment—applied in order to contribute to the modification of intercalants between the MXene nanosheets—and achieves long‐term dispersion of the MXene in alcoholic media and balanced jetting conditions during the electrohydrodynamic printing process. Furthermore, the high conductivity levels of the treated MXenes allow their printed patterns to be applied as gate and source/drain electrodes in all‐printed logic circuits, displaying good and robust operation in transistors, inverters, and NAND, and NOR logic gates. This study provides a promising approach for modifying MXene nanosheets with the purpose of achieving desirable properties suitable for large‐area printing processes, suggesting the feasibility of using MXene in practical applications involving all‐printed electronics.

Direct Ink Writing of Highly Conductive MXene Frames for Tunable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Electromagnetic Wave-Induced Thermochromism

Abstract:Highlights 3D printing of MXene frames with tunable electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency is demonstrated. Highly conductive MXene frames are reinforced by cross-linking with aluminum ions. Electromagnetic wave is visualized by electromagnetic-thermochromic MXene patterns. Abstract The highly integrated and miniaturized next-generation electronic products call for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to assure the normal operation of their closely assembled components. However, the most current techniques are not adequate for the fabrication of shielding materials with programmable structure and controllable shielding efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate the direct ink writing of robust and highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene frames with customizable structures by using MXene/AlOOH inks for tunable EMI shielding and electromagnetic wave-induced thermochromism applications. The as-printed frames are reinforced by immersing in AlCl 3 /HCl solution to remove the electrically insulating AlOOH nanoparticles, as well as cross-link the MXene sheets and fuse the filament interfaces with aluminum ions. After freeze-drying, the resultant robust and porous MXene frames exhibit tunable EMI shielding efficiencies in the range of 25–80 dB with the highest electrical conductivity of 5323 S m −1 . Furthermore, an electromagnetic wave-induced thermochromic MXene pattern is assembled by coating and curing with thermochromic polydimethylsiloxane on a printed MXene pattern, and its color can be changed from blue to red under the high-intensity electromagnetic irradiation. This work demonstrates a direct ink printing of customizable EMI frames and patterns for tuning EMI shielding efficiency and visualizing electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Intelligent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding modulators with a wide tuning range and cyclic stability are urgently needed but their fabrication remains challenging. A gel-like MXene/norepinephrine ink is developed and multifunctional MXene gratings with wide EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) tuning range, superior reversibility, and high mechanical flexibility are constructed by direct ink writing approach for dynamic EMI shielding and patterned Joule heating applications. The modulable MXene/norepinephrine grating with a high conductivity of 3510 S·cm −1 can conveniently realize the seamless modulation of the EMI SE by adjusting the angle between the MXene grating filaments and the electric field of the incident electromagnetic waves, offering highly reversible switching between shielding "On" (28.0 dB) and "Off" (0.5 dB) states. Notably, due to the optimized integration of the MXene ink and the rationally designed pattern, a superior specific EMI SE of 95,688.2 dB·cm 2 ·g −1 is achieved in the "On" state. Furthermore, the MXene/norepinephrine ink can be used to fabricate many complex patterned gratings with superior stability, instant responsibility, and superb mechanical flexibility, exhibiting a unique patterned Joule heating behavior. Direct writing of multifunctional gratings paves a means for developing intelligent EMI shielding materials, wearable electronic devices, and advanced thermal management materials.

Scalable Production of Catecholamine‐Densified MXene Coatings for Electromagnetic Shielding and Infrared Stealth

Abstract:A facile and easily scalable method for the fabrication of large‐area, highly oriented, and compact MXene‐based coatings is developed by engineering the rheological property of small MXene‐based inks and the microstructures of the coatings. Catecholamine‐densified MXene coatings exhibit ultraefficient electromagnetic interference shielding and low infrared emissivity, proving the feasibility of application in aerospace, military, and wearable devices. Processing transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) inks into large‐area functional coatings expects promising potential for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and infrared stealth. However, the coating performances, especially for scalable fabrication techniques, are greatly constrained by the flake size and stacking manner of MXene. Herein, the large‐area production of highly densified and oriented MXene coatings is demonstrated by engineering interfacial interactions of small MXene flakes with catecholamine molecules. The catecholamine molecules can micro‐crosslink MXene nanosheets, significantly improving the ink's rheological properties. It favors the shear‐induced sheet arrangement and inhibition of structural defects in the blade coating process, making it possible to achieve high orientation and densification of MXene assembly by either large‐area coating or patterned printing. Interestingly, the MXene/catecholamine coating exhibits high conductivity of up to 12 247 S cm−1 and ultrahigh specific EMI shielding effectiveness of 2.0 ×10 5 dB cm2 g−1, obviously superior to most of the reported MXene materials. Furthermore, the regularly assembled structure also endows the MXene coatings with low infrared emissivities for infrared stealth applications. Therefore, MXene/catecholamine coatings with ultraefficient EMI shielding and low infrared emissivity prove the feasibility of applications in aerospace, military, and wearable devices.

Abstract:As a thriving member of the 2D nanomaterials family, MXenes, i.e., transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, exhibit outstanding electrochemical, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. They have been exploited in many applications including energy storage, electronics, optoelectronics, biomedicine, sensors, and catalysis. Compared to other 2D materials, MXenes possess a unique set of properties such as high metallic conductivity, excellent dispersion quality, negative surface charge, and hydrophilicity, making them particularly suitable as inks for printing applications. Printing and pre/post‐patterned coating methods represent a whole range of simple, economically efficient, versatile, and eco‐friendly manufacturing techniques for devices based on MXenes. Moreover, printing can allow for complex 3D architectures and multifunctionality that are highly required in various applications. By means of printing and patterned coating, the performance and application range of MXenes can be dramatically increased through careful patterning in three dimensions; thus, printing/coating is not only a device fabrication tool but also an enabling tool for new applications as well as for industrialization.

Abstract:Inks printing is an innovative and practicable technology capable of fabricating the next generation of flexible functional systems with various designs and desired architectures. As a result, inks printing is extremely attractive in the development of printed wearables, including wearable sensors, micro supercapacitor (MSC) electrodes, electromagnetic shielding, and thin-film batteries. The discovery of Ti3C2Tx in 2011, a 2D material known as a MXene, which is a compound composed of layered nitrides, carbides, or carbonitrides of transition metals, has attracted significant interest within the research community because of its exceptional physical and chemical properties. MXene has high metallic conductivity of transition metal carbides combined with hydrophilic behavior due to its surface terminated functional groups, all of which make it an excellent candidate for promising inks printing applications. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of 2D MXene inks, including synthesis procedures, inks formulation and performance, and printing methods. Further, the review briefly provides an overview of future guidelines for the study of this new generation of 2D materials.

Holocellulose Nanofibril-Assisted Intercalation and Stabilization of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene Inks for Multifunctional Sensing and EMI Shielding Applications

Abstract:2D transition-metal carbide/nitride (MXene)-based conductive inks have received tremendous attention due to their high electrical conductivity and other fascinating properties. However, the unstability of MXene-based inks, low fabrication yield of MXene flakes, and poor mechanical properties of printed products strongly limit the proper and large-scale printing of MXene patterns. Here, functioning as a dispersant, an intercalation agent, and reinforcement, sulfated holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) with a unique "core–shell" structure are conducive to the fabrication, storage, and subsequent printing of MXene inks. The MXene/HCNF (MH) ink with high yield (97.2%), good stability, and good homogeneity exhibits excellent printing performance (high resolution and good coverage). It could print various products with adjustable thicknesses and electrical conductivity properties on different substrates. The products printed by the MH ink can be applied as multifunctional sensing materials responding to multiple external stimuli, such as stress/strain, blowing, humidity, and temperature. Unlocking Self‐antioxidant Capability and Processability of Additive‐free MXene Ink towards High‐performance Customizable Supercapacitors

Abstract:The solution processing of MXene ink is the feasible strategy to realize its state-of-the-art applications. Nevertheless, achieving high stability and processability of additive-free MXene ink is particularly challenging. Herein, we propose an oxyanion-terminated Ti3C2Tx MXene ink that exhibits excellent self-antioxidant capability and processability. The vertex-connected polyhedrons of oxyanions capping on the Ti3C2 host serve as an in-situ antioxidative shield, effectively preventing the attack of free H2O molecules while increasing the robustness of the Ti–C bond and reducing the susceptibility of surface Ti atoms to oxidation. Consequently, the shelf life of MXene ink can be extended up to 5 months at room temperature. Moreover, the high electron accumulation of oxyanions enhances the interlayer interactions among MXene sheets through electrostatic binding, which enables the formation of stable and uniform MXene inks with controlled rheological properties and processability. Inspired by Chinese calligraphy, we utilize the oxyanion-terminated MXene ink to fabricate high-performance and customizable paper supercapacitors, which exhibit exceptional flexibility and stability, allowing them to be tailored to desired capacity, stretchability, and shapes. This in-situ surface chemistry strategy of oxyanion can activate the self-antioxidant capability and solution processability of MXene, paving the way for its widespread applications in flexible and wearable electronics.

Size effect enabling additive-free MXene ink with ultrahigh conductivity for screen printing of wireless electronics

Abstract:Facile preparation of additive-free inks with both high viscosity and high conductivity is critical for scalable screen printing of wireless electronics, yet very challenging. MXene materials exhibit excellent conductivity and hydrophilicity, showing great potential in the field of additive-free inks for screen printing. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of additive-free two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide MXene inks, and realize screen-printed MXene wireless electronics for the first time. The viscosity of MXene ink is solely regulated by tuning the size of MXene nanosheet without any additives, hence rendering the printed MXene film extremely high conductivity of 1.67 × 10 5 S/m and fine printing resolution down to 0.05 mm on various flexible substrates. Moreover, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags fabricated using the additive-free MXene ink via screen printing exhibit stable antenna reading performance and superb flexibility. This article, thus offers a new route for the efficient, low-cost and pollution-free manufacture of printable electronics based on additive-free MXene inks.

Abstract:While water is a good solvent for dispersing MXenes, high‐throughput printing of water‐based dispersions typically yields poor results. Excellent ink properties are achieved in co‐solvent systems such as propylene glycol and water, whereby water plays the role of a surfactant to disperse MXenes in solvents well known for their suitability as carrier medium for various printing techniques. MXene inks are promising alternatives for conventional conductive inks in printing electronics. However, the formulation of MXene inks is challenging due to the physicochemical properties of the few solvents in which MXenes can be dispersed. Furthermore, conventional MXene dispersions form high‐viscosity gels at low concentrations, making their ink formulation even more difficult. Here, a novel co‐solvent‐based approach is reported for dispersing MXenes in polar organic solvents that have excellent physicochemical properties as a carrier solvent for ink formulation but are not suitable for dispersing MXenes. Water is used as a dispersing agent and the second component of the co‐solvent system. The surfactant‐like role of water in dispersing MXenes in such solvents is also confirmed using molecular dynamics simulations. Using this strategy, the sol‐gel transition is significantly upshifted, enabling the formulation of highly concentrated inks with single‐ or few‐layered large‐flake MXenes. Numerous types of electronic components such as interconnects, resistors, transparent flexible conductive electrodes, and micro‐supercapacitors are fabricated using high‐throughput coating and printing techniques such as gravure printing, showcasing the immense potential of MXene inks for room‐temperature printing of electronics.

Abstract:Over the past several years, atomically thin two‐dimensional carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, otherwise known as MXenes, have been expanded into over fifty material candidates that are experimentally produced, and over one hundred and fifty more candidates that have been theoretically predicted. They have demonstrated transformative properties such as metallic‐type electrical conductivities, optical properties such as plasmonics and optical non‐linearity, and key surface properties such as hydrophilicity, and unique surface chemistry. In terms of their applications, they are poised to transform technological areas such as energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, sensing, and bioelectronics in future. One of the most promising aspects of MXene's future application in all the above areas of interest, we believe, is developing their flexible and bendable electronics and optoelectronics by printing methods (henceforth, termed as printed flexible MXetronics). Designing and manipulating MXene conductive inks according to the application requirements will therefore be a transformative goal for future printed electronic technologies. MXene's combined property of high electrical conductivity and water‐friendly nature to easily disperse its micro/nano‐flakes in an aqueous medium without any binder paves the way for designing additive‐free highly conductive MXene ink. However, the chemical and/or structural and hence functional stability of water based MXene inks over time is not reliable, opening research avenues for further development of stable and conductive MXene inks. Such priorities will enable applications requiring high‐resolution and highly reliable printed MXene electronics using state‐of‐the art printing methods. Engineering MXene structural and surface functional properties while tuning MXene ink rheology in solvents of choice will be a key for ink developments. This review article summarizes the present status and prospects of MXene inks and their use in inkjet‐printed (IJP) technology for future flexible and bendable MXetronics. Abstract:Establishing dependable, cost-effective electrical connections is vital for enhancing device performance and shrinking electronic circuits. MXenes, combining excellent electrical conductivity, high breakdown voltage, solution processability, and two-dimensional morphology, are promising candidates for contacts in microelectronics. However, their hydrophilic surfaces, which enable spontaneous environmental degradation and poor dispersion stability in organic solvents, have restricted certain electronic applications. Herein, electrohydrodynamic printing technique is used to fabricate fully solution-processed thin-film transistors with alkylated 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine functionalized Ti3C2Tx (AD-MXene) as source, drain, and gate electrodes. The AD-MXene has excellent dispersion stability in ethanol, which is required for electrohydrodynamic printing, and maintains high electrical conductivity. It outperformed conventional vacuum-deposited Au and Al electrodes, providing thin-film transistors with good environmental stability due to its hydrophobicity. Further, thin-film transistors are integrated into logic gates and one-transistor-one-memory cells. This work, unveiling the ligand-functionalized MXenes' potential in printed electrical contacts, promotes environmentally robust MXene-based electronics (MXetronics).
Modulation of Multifunctional Electric Dipoles on MXenes for Boosting Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Abstract:Free-standing MXene films are recognized as excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding walls owing to their high conductivity, laminate structures, and abundant terminations. Here, we report conjugated polymers of PBTz-SO 3 Na, PBTzSO 3 TBA, and PEDOT:PSS, respectively, electrostatically assembled on interlayer surfaces of Ti 3 C 2 T ,r MXene generating tunable electric dipoles, accompanied by improvements of conductivity, oxidation resistance, and mechanical stability, to ultimately enhance EMI shielding performance. PEDOT 2+ (or TBA + ) cations on Ti 3 C 2 T ,r surfaces induce reversely strong polarized dipoles and enhance conductivity for more electromagnetic wave (EW) attenuation. By increasing the anchored polymers, the enhanced absorption attenuation ensures complete attenuation of incident EW, revealing a dual mechanism of reflection and absorption for EW shielding. At last, the Ti 3 C 2 T ,r anchored with PEDOT 2+ (or TBA + ) achieves EMI shielding effectiveness approaching 100 dB at 20 - m m thickness. Briefly, multifunctional engineering in electric dipoles between MXene interlayers opens an unexplored avenue for designing efficient EMI shielding materials.

Abstract:Direct printing of functional inks is critical for applications in diverse areas including electrochemical energy storage, smart electronics and healthcare. However, the available printable ink formulations are far from ideal. Either surfactants/additives are typically involved or the ink concentration is low, which add complexity to the manufacturing and compromises the printing resolution. Here, we demonstrate two types of two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene inks, aqueous and organic in the absence of any additive or binary-solvent systems, for extrusion printing and inkjet printing, respectively. We show examples of all-MXene-printed structures, such as micro-supercapacitors, conductive tracks and ohmic resistors on untreated plastic and paper substrates, with high printing resolution and spatial uniformity. The volumetric capacitance and energy density of the all-MXene-printed micro-supercapacitors are orders of magnitude greater than existing inkjet/extrusion-printed active materials. The versatile direct-ink-printing technique highlights the promise of additive-free MXene inks for scalable fabrication of easy-to-integrate components of printable electronics.

Abstract:A "100%" utilization of MAX/MXene strategy is proposed to produce novel, additive‐free, and high‐performance conductive inks. A new type of wearable, large‐area e‐textiles that perform in extreme conditions are thus manufactured through a scalable direct‐blade‐coating followed by chemical cross‐linking approach. The structural design provides integrated multifunctionality, offering exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding, visual electro‐/photothermal conversion, electrothermal deicing, and antibacterial performance. Transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) show great potential for preparing wearable, flexible multifunctional e‐textiles due to the exceptional electrical and mechanical properties and easy processing in aqueous medium. At present, MXene‐based e‐textiles face challenges including high production costs, low utilization of precursor titanium aluminum carbide (MAX), poor durability in extreme environments, and the inability to achieve a balance between large‐scale fabrication and high performance. Here, this work proposes a "100%" utilization of MAX/MXene strategy to produce additive‐free conductive inks with controllable viscosity, subsequently enabling an accessible, scalable direct‐blade‐coating followed by chemical cross‐linking approach for creating wearable, high‐performance, multifunctional MXene‐based e‐textiles that perform in extreme conditions. The structural design provides integrated multifunctionality involving controllable and exceptional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding within an ultrabroadband frequency range, visual electrothermal conversion, electrothermal deicing, remarkable visual photothermal, and antibacterial performance. This work employs a fabrication process that is simple, cost‐effective, and scalable, presenting a novel "100% efficiency" and "waste‐to‐wealth" strategy to manufacture robust, durable, multifunctional e‐textiles. This approach provides exciting potential for the next generation of wearable electronics, EMI compatibility, visual heating, thermotherapy, antibacterial treatments, deicing, defense, and aerospace applications.

Abstract:Printing is regarded as a revolutionary and feasible technique to guide the fabrication of versatile functional systems with designed architectures. 2D MXenes are nowadays attractive in printed energy storage devices. However, owing to the van der Waals interaction between the MXene layers, the restacking issues within the printed electrodes can significantly impede the ion/electrolyte transport and hence handicap the electrochemical performances. Herein, a melamine formaldehyde templating method is demonstrated to develop crumpled nitrogen‐doped MXene (MXene‐N) nanosheets. The nitrogen doping boosts the electrochemical performances of MXene via enhanced conductivity and redox activity. Accordingly, two types of MXene‐N inks are prepared throughout the optimization of the ink viscosity to fit the 2D screen printing and 3D extrusion printing, respectively. As a result, the screen printed MXene‐N microsupercapacitor delivers an areal capacitance of 70.1 mF cm−2 and outstanding mechanical robustness. Furthermore, the 3D‐printed MXene‐N based supercapacitor manifests an areal capacitance of 8.2 F cm−2 for a three‐layered electrode and readily stores a high areal energy density of 0.42 mWh cm−2. The approach to harnessing such versatile MXene‐N inks offers distinctive insights into the printed energy storage systems with high areal energy density and large scalability.

Abstract:A novel method using cysteine on MXene nanosheets tackles limitations in 2D MXenes (ionic activity & active sites). This one‐step approach creates a high‐performance MXene ink for both micro‐supercapacitors (superior capacitance & power density) and lead removal (exceptional adsorption). DFT simulations support cysteine's effectiveness. This method emphasizes MXene inks with antioxidant properties for future printable electronics and clean water solutions. 2D Ti3C2Tx‐MXenes have gained attention as highly promising materials owing to their distinctive characteristics. Even so, the limited ionic kinetics and active site exposure of these materials are hindered by the significant degradation caused by oxidation, as well as the challenges in ink formulation processability and nanosheet restacking. Here, this study presents a single‐step and economical method to embellish cysteine onto titanium carbide (MX‐C) nanosheets. Cysteine is found to facilitate the tuning of the interlayer spacing in MXene nanosheets. The idea is then applied in the development of micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs) and the removal of toxic metal ions, specifically lead. In addition, the investigation reveals that MX‐C exhibits antioxidant behavior and possesses excellent qualities as inks. The MX‐C‐printed MSC exhibits ultra‐high areal capacitance (68 mF cm−2 ( = 5)) and power density (170.6 μW cm−2) compared to the reported printed MSC system. Similarly, the MX‐C facilitates a high capacity for selectively adsorbing lead while also exhibiting excellent performance in terms of adsorption–desorption. The adsorption‐induced effectiveness of cysteine is additionally validated by density functional theory simulations. The versatile approach emphasizes the potential of MX‐C inks with antioxidation properties for the invention of MSCs and metal uptake for printable electronics and clean water applications, respectively.
