Abstract:Anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants with varying concentrations (0.2–1.2%) were introduced to neutralize beads on lignin nanofibers by decreasing the surface tension of spinning dopes. The surfactants used in this work were sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), N,N,N-trimethyl-1-dodecanaminium bromide (DTAB), and Triton X-100 (TX-100). The effects of viscosity, rheological properties, surface tension, and conductivity of the solutions on the morphology and physicochemical performances of fibers were investigated. As expected, the presence of certain amounts of surfactants eliminated the beads and resulted in the formation of smooth and bead-free fibers with small diameters. Furthermore, the gravimetric capacitance of the carbon mat with 1% SDS was slightly improved from 66.3 to 80.7 F g–1. The results suggested that the surfactants benefit from the electrospinning of lignin and allow for the control over nanofiber morphology without compromising their performance as supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Using acetic acid instead of dimethylformamide as solvent, lignin-based nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning with industrial low molecular weight lignin. After pre-oxidation and carbonization, the fibril was transformed into carbon fiber. The results showed that different viscosity of spinning solution and different parameters of electrospinning have great influence on the morphology of fibers. The diameter of fibers could be concentrated in 300-500nm by using the best electrospinning process. After carbonizing the fibers, it was found that the lignin fibers could retain the morphology of the fibers after carbonization at a suitable heating rate and holding temperature. This study showed the conditions required for the preparation of carbon fiber from low molecular weight lignin, and provided a way for high value utilization of waste biomass and green preparation of carbon fiber.

Abstract:At present, most carbon fibers are made from non-renewable polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Substantial efforts have been made to replace the need for petroleum-based precursors for carbon fiber production. Interestingly, lignin is a carbon fiber precursor material that is cheap, highly available, and sustainable. Sub-micron scale lignin-based carbon nanofibers could find use in numerous areas, such as electronic devices, batteries, supercapacitors, and low-cost, high performance structural composite materials. Trackspinning (TS) technology offers a way scale the versatile, but inefficient mechanical pulling technique to produce small diameter lignin fibers from environmentally friendly aqueous solutions. In this study, the effects of track spinning based on probe drawing of low concentration lignin nanofibers blended with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and glycerol in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution were investigated. TS lignin fibers were well aligned and reached diameters as low as 500-1000 nm as the drawing length was increased. Lignin fiber macromolecular alignment was isotropic at low levels of draw and dichroic ratio was increased from 1 to 2.25 by doubling the drawing length. The most highly drawn track-spun lignin fibers had a mechanical strength of 3.92 MPa and a Young's Modulus of 2.15 GPa, which were similar to reported values for solvent electrospun lignin nanofibers. These findings support the potential to utilize TS to produce small diameter lignin fibers using a simple aqueous solvent approach.

Abstract:Upscaling lignin-based precursor fibre production is an essential step in developing bio-based carbon fibre from renewable feedstock. The main challenge in upscaling of lignin fibre production by melt spinning is its melt behaviour and rheological properties, which differ from common synthetic polymers used in melt spinning. Here, a new approach in melt spinning of lignin, using a spin carrier system for producing bicomponent fibres, has been introduced. An ethanol extracted lignin fraction from LignoBoost process of commercial softwood kraft black liquor was used as feedstock. After additional heat treatment, melt spinning was performed in a pilot-scale spinning unit. For the first time, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a spin carrier to enable the spinning of lignin by improving the required melt strength. PVA-sheath/lignin-core bicomponent fibres were manufactured. Afterwards, PVA was dissolved by washing with water. Pure lignin fibres were stabilized and carbonized, and tensile properties were measured. The measured properties, tensile modulus of 81.1 ± 3.1 GPa and tensile strength of 1039 ± 197 MPa, are higher than the majority of lignin-based carbon fibres reported in the literature. This new approach can significantly improve the melt spinning of lignin and solve problems related to poor spinnability of lignin and results in the production of high-quality lignin-based carbon fibres. Effective Fractionation Strategy of Sugarcane Bagasse Lignin to Fabricate Quality Lignin-Based Carbon Nanofibers Supercapacitors

Abstract:Lignin is recommended to a tempting alternative precursor of petroleum for fabricating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) due to its high carbon content, low-cost and renewable resources. However, the property of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) is inferior owing to the heterogeneity and 3D-network structure of lignin, which hinders its application in supercapacitors. The latest developments in fractionation technology have shown great potential for overcoming the aforementioned shortcomings. However, most of fractionation methods mainly rely on expensive chemicals and complex reaction process, such as enzymes, multiple solvents, membranes, and dialysis tubes. Herein, we proposed a controllable and effective strategy to fractionate lignin by only changing the ratio of ethanol/water (V/V) as mixture solvent. This gradient extraction method effectively removed the part of lignin with small molecular and branching structure, thus selectively getting the fractionated lignin with high molecular weight, narrow polydispersity index, and good linear structure. Fortunately, when the ratio of ethanol/ water was 6:4, the corresponding LCNFs (LCNFs-L60) was obtained with large specific surface area, independent filamentous morphology networks and excellent electrochemical property. Its specific capacitance was up to 405.8 F/g. This way features controllable and sustainable for preparing high-quality LCNFs supercapacitors.
A Feasible Way To Produce Carbon Nanofiber By Electrospinning From Sugarcane Bagasse

Abstract:Recently, the nanofiber materials derived from natural polymers instead of petroleum-based polymers by electrospinning have aroused a great deal of interests. The lignocellulosic biomass could not be electrospun into nanofiber directly due to its poor solubility. Here, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was subjected to the homogeneous esterification with different anhydrides, and the corresponding esterified products (SCB-A) were obtained. It was found that the bead-free and uniform nanofibers were obtained via electrospinning even when the mass fraction of acetylated SCB was 70%. According to the thermogravimetric analyses, the addition of SCB-A could improve the thermal stability of the electrospun composite nanofibers. More importantly, in contrast to the pure polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon nanofiber, the SCB-A based carbon nanofibers had higher electrical conductivity and the surface N element content. In addition, the superfine carbon nanofiber mats with minimum average diameter of 117.0 +/- 13.7 nm derived from SCB-A were obtained, which results in a larger Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area than pure PAN based carbon nanofiber. These results demonstrated that the combination of the homogeneous esterification and electrospinning could be a feasible and potential way to produce the bio-based carbon nanofibers directly from lignocellulosic without component separation.
Highly Strong and Conductive Carbon Fibers Originated from Bioinspired Lignin/Nanocellulose Precursors Obtained by Flow-Assisted Alignment and In Situ Interfacial Complexation

Abstract:Composite filaments comprised of lignin and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were fabricated by a microfluidic spinning technique together with in situ interfacial complexation. The hierarchical assembly of well-ordered lignin/CNFs cross-linked using chitosan by ionic bonds resulted in the high orientation degree and compact microstructure of the filament, which was a promising precursor of carbon fibers. After stabilization and carbonization, bio-based carbon fibers with fine graphite microcrystals were obtained and carbon lattice was highly oriented along the fiber direction, contributing to the superior macro-performance. When the content of lignin was 75 wt %, the tensile strength and electrical conductivity of the carbon fibers reached 1648 MPa and 185.3 S/cm, respectively, surpassing the most reported values in the literature. Furthermore, a combined TG-FTIR approach was applied to further analyze the carbonization process of lignin/CNF precursors. The excellent mechanical and electrical performance of the bio-based carbon fibers would broaden their applications as a reinforcing agent and an electrical device. Abstract:Fabricating lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) with the lignin in spent coffee grounds (SCG) as raw material which are disposed as waste amounting to millions tons annual is benefit to promote economy and environmental protection. However, due to the heterogeneity and complex three-dimensional structure, the mechanic property is very poor. In this study, we propose a fractionating pretreatment method to overcome the above problems by regulating the structure of SCG lignin in which high-performance LCNFs were fabricated. On one hand, the linear structure of SCG lignin was optimized to fit the raw material of LCNFs by tuning the content of β-O-4 and C5-substituted condensed phenolic compounds. On the other hand, the carboxyl as the hydrophilic groups was removed so as to promote the mixing of lignin and polyacrylonitrile (PAN, blending agent) in organic solvents. Additionally, the heterogeneity was reduced by screening large molecular weight SCG lignin with low polydispersity index (PDI). Fortunately, with 1:1 mass ratio of the above fractionated lignin and PAN as substrate, the LCNFs could reach to comparable mechanic properties with those of pure PAN CNFs. This work can provide a new way to not only promote the utilization of SCG lignin but also accelerate the development of LCNFs.

Abstract:The production of low-cost and high-quality carbon fibers (CFs) from biorenewable lignin precursors has been of worldwide interest for decades. Although numerous works have been reported and the proposed "1.72 GPa/172 GPa" target set by the Department of Energy (DOE) has been closely met in a few studies, most lignin-based CFs (LCFs) have poor strength properties compared to industrial PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based CFs. The production of LCFs involves several steps, and the final quality of LCFs is governed by both lignin's properties and the manufacturing processes. Therefore, understanding the key factors of producing high quality LCF is of high importance. In this review, we firstly outlined several lignin's properties (e.g., impurities, thermal properties, molecular structure) that may play important role in determining its processability and suitability as carbon fiber precursor. Secondly, conversion strategies include spinning, stabilization and carbonization, and corresponding parameters influencing the final quality of LCF are comprehensively analyzed. Last, additional characterization methods are proposed as a means to facilitate analyzing of lignin and LCF. This review attempts to provide insights towards high-quality LCF production from both material and manufacturing aspects.

Abstract:This paper reports on the production of electro-spun nanofibers from softwood Kraft lignin without the need for polymer blending and/or chemical modification. Commercially available softwood Kraft lignin was fractionated using acetone. The acetone-soluble lignin (AcSL) had an ash content of 0.06 wt %, a weight average molecular weight of 4250 g·mol-1 along with the polydispersity index of 1.73. The corresponding values for as-received lignin (ARL) were 1.20 wt %, 6000 g·mol-1, and 2.22, respectively. The AcS was dissolved in a binary solvent consisting of acetone, and dimethyl sulfoxide (2:1, v/v) was selected for dissolving the AcSL. Conventional and custom-designed grounded electrode configurations were used to produce electro-spun neat lignin fibers that were randomly oriented or highly aligned, respectively. The diameter of the electro-spun fibers ranged from 1.12 to 1.46 μm. After vacuum drying at 140 °C for 6 h to remove the solvents and oxidation at 250 °C, the fibers were carbonized at 1000, 1200, and 1500 °C for 1 h. The carbonized fibers were unfused and void-free with an average diameter of 500 nm. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis were used to characterize the carbonized fibers.
Preparation and Characterization of Highly Porous Polyacrylonitrile Electrospun Nanofibers Using Lignin as Soft Template via Selective Chemical Dissolution Technique

Abstract:In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was mixed with a renewable polymer, lignin, to produce electrospun nanofibers by using an electrospinning technique. Lignin was utilized as a soft template that was removed from the nanofibers by using a selective dissolution technique to create porous PAN nanofibers. These nanofibers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) to study their properties and morphology. The results showed that lignin can be homogeneously mixed into the PAN solution and successfully electrospun into nanofibers. FESEM results showed a strong relationship between the PAN: lignin ratio and the diameter of the electrospun fibers. Lignin was successfully removed from electrospun nanofibers by a selective chemical dissolution technique, which resulted in roughness and porousness on the surface of the nanofibers. Based on the BET result, the specific surface area of the PAN/lignin nanofibers was more than doubled following the removal of lignin compared to PAN nanofibers. The highest specific surface area of nanofibers after selective chemical dissolution was found at an 8:2 ratio of PAN/lignin, which was 32.42 m2g−1 with an average pore diameter of 5.02 nm. The diameter of electrospun nanofibers was also slightly reduced after selective chemical dissolution. Porous PAN nanofibers can be seen as the precursors to the production of highly porous carbon nanofibers.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers are a type of carbon material known for their high mechanical strength and multifunctionality, and they have promising applications in fields such as electronics, transportation, and aerospace. Currently, the majority of carbon nanofibers are produced using nonrenewable resources such as polyacrylonitrile, which makes them relatively expensive. However, lignin, as an inexpensive and renewable resource, is considered a potential alternative material for carbon nanofiber production. This article explores the classification, molecular structure, and extraction methods of lignin, summarizing the preparation methods for lignin-based carbon nanofibers, including spinning and chemical vapor deposition. Furthermore, we address challenges such as low density and poor orientation in lignin-based carbon nanofibers and provide an overview of reinforcement methods such as drawing, rolling, and particle doping to overcome these limitations. Additionally, we focus on their primary applications in devices like supercapacitors, sodium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we also offer a glimpse into the prospective advancements in lignin-based carbon nanofiber development.

Abstract:Adhesion of fibers within a spun tow, including carbon fibers and precursors, is undesirable as it may interrupt the manufacturing process and entail inferior fiber properties. In this work, softwood kraft lignin was used together with a dissolving pulp to spin carbon fiber precursors. Lignin–cellulose precursors have previously been found to be prone to fiber fusion, both post-spinning and during carbon fiber conversion. In this study, the efficiency of applying different kinds of spin finishes, with respect to rendering separable precursors and carbon fibers, has been investigated. It was found that applying a cationic surfactant, and to a similar extent a nonionic surfactant, resulted in well separated lignin–cellulose precursor tows. Furthermore, the fiber separability after carbon fiber conversion was evaluated, and notably, precursors treated with a silicone-based spin finish generated the most well-separated carbon fibers. The underlying mechanism of fiber fusion post-spinning and converted carbon fibers is discussed.

Abstract:Lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) with tunable lignin contents from sugarcane bagasse were directly prepared by low-temperature soda‑oxygen pulping combined with simple mechanical treatment. The residual lignin structure, morphology and physical dimensions of LCNFs, and properties of the relevant cellulose nanopapers (CNPs) were investigated. In situ 2D Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (HSQC) NMR spectra showed β-O-4 linkages, ferulate, and para-coumarate were well preserved in the LCNFs. Compared with the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), LCNFs displayed a more uniform size and narrow diameter distribution. The corresponding CNPs exhibited outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strength reached 152.9 MPa), and excellent combined optical properties both in the UV blocking and visible light transparency. Moreover, the water contact angles (50.0-80.2°) of LCNFs were much higher than that of CNFs (21.7°). Direct preparation of LCNFs under mild condition would unlock the full potential of cellulosic materials and provide enhanced opportunities for cellulose to fabricate multi-functional and high-value materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the use of amorphous lignin, a waste by-product of the paper industry, for the production of high performance carbon fibers (CF) as precursor with improved thermal stability and thermo-mechanical properties. The precursor was prepared by blending of lignin with polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which was previously dissolved in an ionic liquid. The fibers thus produced offered very high thermal stability as compared with the fiber consisting of pure PAN. The molecular compatibility, miscibility, and thermal stability of the system were studied by means of shear rheological measurements. The achieved mechanical properties were found to be related to the temperature-dependent relaxation time (consistence parameter) of the spinning dope and the diffusion kinetics of the ionic liquids from the fibers into the coagulation bath. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical tests (DMA) were utilized to understand in-depth the thermal and the stabilization kinetics of the developed fibers and the impact of lignin on the stabilization process of the fibers. Low molecular weight lignin increased the thermally induced physical shrinkage, suggesting disturbing effects on the semi-crystalline domains of the PAN matrix, and suppressed the chemically induced shrinkage of the fibers. The knowledge gained throughout the present paper allows summarizing a novel avenue to develop lignin-based CF designed with adjusted thermal stability.

Abstract:In the search for more sustainable energy storage devices, biomass-derived materials have been widely researched as carbon source for electrode applications. Here we present the processing of high molecular lignin, an abundant carbon rich biopolymer and byproduct of the pulp and paper industry, into freestanding nonwoven carbon fiber (CNFs) electrodes by using electrospinning. It is worth mentioning that no petrol-derived polymers that are usually included in the electrospinning of lignin, were employed in this work, making these electrodes more sustainable than common lignin-derived carbon electrodes. The effect of the carbonization temperature and oxygen plasma treatment in the electrochemical performance of the CNFs as electrodes for supercapacitors was studied. The upscaling of the processing of lignin into carbon electrodes was also explored by comparing a standard electrospinning set up with a needleless electrospinning equipment that enabled faster and higher throughput. The electrochemical performance of the CNFs increased after plasma treatment of the surface and the electrodes prepared using the standard set up exhibited the highest activity, achieving specific capacitances of up to 103.6 F g −1 .

Abstract:Bio-based carbon fibers derived from lignin have gained significant attention due to their diverse and renewable sources, ease of extraction, and low cost. However, the current limitations of low specific surface area and insufficient electrical conductivity hinder the widespread application of lignin-derived carbon fibers (LCFs). In this work, highly conductive and porous LCFs are developed through melt-blowing, pretreatment, and carbonization processes. The effects of the carbonization temperature and heating rate on the structures and properties of the LCFs are systematically investigated. The resultant LCFs exhibit high electrical conductivity (71 400 S m-1) and a large specific surface area (923 m2 g-1). The assembled lithium-ion battery based on the LCF anodes demonstrates a long cycle life of >800 cycles and a high specific capacity of 466 mA h g-1. The findings of this study hold practical significance for promoting the utilization of lignin in the fields of energy storage, adsorption, and beyond.
Preparation of flexible and binder-free lignin-based carbon nanofiber electrode materials by electrospinning in aqueous system

Abstract:Lignin, as a widely distributed, renewable and environmentally friendly source of carbon, could been utilized for carbon nanofibers to not only maximize the usage of resources, but also expand the energy-related opportunities. In this research, flexible lignin-based carbon nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning lignin nanofibers in a new green aqueous solution of lignin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is then characterized by physical and chemical characterizations. The results reveal that optimal carbonization temperature of 800 °C shows great improvements on the structural properties of lignin-based carbon nanofibers, which can be applied as binder-free electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrodes with good flexibility. The 2032 type button battery has a superior electrochemical performance with a large specific capacitance of 217.2 F g −1 at a 0.2 A g −1 current density, and remarkable cyclic stability of 94.9 % capacitance retention even after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, due to the abundance of mesoporous volume and large microporous surface area of lignin-based carbon nanofiber electrodes carbonized in 800 °C.

Abstract:Compared to carbon fibers made from conventional petroleum-based precursors, lignin-based carbon fibers can lower the production cost while enabling cleaner manufacturing. The use of lignin-based carbon fibers is currently hindered by their poor mechanical properties that are mainly attributed to the lack of orientability in lignin structure. Herein, we demonstrated a novel method of producing high-quality carbon fiber, by which lignin is first transformed into a new precursor polymer with a linear molecular orientation, and the precursor is subsequently melt-processed. Specifically, a raw red oak lignin bio-oil consisting of multifunctional compounds with distributed molecular weights was converted into a lightly branched, acrylate polymer via a hybrid functionalization followed by controlled radical polymerization. By carefully investigating different synthesis parameters and determining the effects of the intrinsic properties of the crude lignin bio-oil have on the polymerization, a melt-spinnable thermoplastic polymer could be obtained in high yield. The new polymer was then used to produce carbon fiber with average tensile strength of 1.70 GPa and tensile modulus of 182 GPa. Our analysis results indicated that the new precursor structure can improve the degree of graphitization and reduce structural defects in the resulting carbon fiber. Structural analyses showed that the carbon fiber contains a highly ordered and well-stacked turbostratic structure. Overall, this study presents a promising approach to produce low-cost, high-quality carbon fiber that may have applications in the automobile industries.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the successful production of lignin‐based carbon fibers. For this purpose, lignin fibers are spun by dry spinning from aqueous solution followed by stabilization and continuous carbonization to endless yarns. This represents a completely new and environmentally friendly approach, since the process does not require the use of solvents or toxic additives. The preparation of lignin‐based carbon fibers by dry spinning from aqueous solution followed by stabilization and continuous carbonization to endless yarns is reported. The influence of carbonization temperature and draw ratio on the morphology and mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers is investigated by single‐fiber testing, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. A draw ratio of 5% (1.05) with a carbonization temperature of 1400 °C leads to the best mechanical properties. The resulting multifilament carbon fibers have an average diameter between 10–12 μm, an average tensile strength of 1.30 ± 0.32 GPa, a Young's modulus of 101 ± 18 GPa, and an elongation at break of 1.31 ± 0.23%. The maximum Weibull strength (σ0) is 1.04 GPa with a Weibull modulus (m) of 5.1. The use of a water‐soluble system is economically advantageous; also, unlike melt‐spun lignin fibers, the dry‐spun precursor fibers can be thermally converted without any additional crosslinking step.
