Abstract:Abstract This study investigates the dynamic mechanism of financial markets on volatility spillovers across eight major cryptocurrency returns, namely Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar, Ripple, Tether, Cardano, Litecoin, and Eos from November 17, 2019, to January 25, 2021. The study captures the financial behavior of investors during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of national lockdowns and slowdown of production. Three different methods, namely, EGARCH, DCC-GARCH, and wavelet, are used to understand whether cryptocurrency markets have been exposed to extreme volatility. While GARCH family models provide information about asset returns at given time scales, wavelets capture that information across different frequencies without losing inputs from the time horizon. The overall results show that three cryptocurrency markets (i.e., Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin) are highly volatile and mutually dependent over the sample period. This result means that any kind of shock in one market leads investors to act in the same direction in the other market and thus indirectly causes volatility spillovers in those markets. The results also imply that the volatility spillover across cryptocurrency markets was more influential in the second lockdown that started at the beginning of November 2020. Finally, to calculate the financial risk, two methods—namely, value-at-risk (VaR) and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR)—are used, along with two additional stock indices (the Shanghai Composite Index and S&P 500). Regardless of the confidence level investigated, the selected crypto assets, with the exception of the USDT were found to have substantially greater downside risk than SSE and S&P 500.

Abstract:This study investigates tail dependence among five major cryptocurrencies, namely Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, and Bitcoin Cash, and uncertainties in the gold, oil, and equity markets. Using the cross-quantilogram method and quantile connectedness approach, we identify cross-quantile interdependence between the analyzed variables. Our results show that the spillover between cryptocurrencies and volatility indices for the major traditional markets varies substantially across quantiles, implying that diversification benefits for these assets may differ widely across normal and extreme market conditions. Under normal market conditions, the total connectedness index is moderate and falls below the elevated values observed under bearish and bullish market conditions. Moreover, we show that under all market conditions, cryptocurrencies have a leadership influence over the volatility indices. Our results have important policy implications for enhancing financial stability and deliver valuable insights for deploying volatility-based financial instruments that can potentially provide cryptocurrency investors with suitable hedges, as we show that cryptocurrency and volatility markets are insignificantly (weakly) connected under normal (extreme) market conditions.

Abstract:We are the first to explore the effect of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and the COVID-19 pandemic on the correlation between the cryptocurrency index CRIX and the world stock market portfolio, as well as the hedging properties of CRIX. To this end, we mainly apply the dynamic conditional correlation model with mixed data sampling regressions, a threshold vector autoregressive model and the generalized impulse response function. We demonstrate that the correlation is influenced by the uncertainty stance of the economy and behaves differently in low-, medium- and high-uncertainty periods. Most of the abnormal market relations exist in high levels of EPU or during the COVID-19 period, and the impact of global EPU is greater than that of EPU originating in the United States, Europe, Russia and China. Moreover, the CRIX can serve as a hedge asset against the world stock market. The high (low) level of EPU has a significantly positive (negative) effect on the optimal hedge ratio of CRIX, which increases significantly during the COVID-19 period. Our findings have implications for risk management, portfolio allocations and hedging strategies.

Abstract:This study investigates volatility spillovers and network connectedness among four cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, and BNB coin), four energy companies (Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Nextera Energy), and four mega-technology companies (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon) in the US. We analyze data for the period November 15, 2017–October 28, 2022 using methodologies in Diebold and Yilmaz (Int J Forecast 28(1):57–66, 2012) and Baruník and Křehlík (J Financ Economet 16(2):271–296 2018). Our analysis shows the COVID-19 pandemic amplified volatility spillovers, thereby intensifying the impact of financial contagion between markets. This finding indicates the impact of the pandemic on the US economy heightened risk transmission across markets. Moreover, we show that Bitcoin, Ethereum, Chevron, ConocoPhilips, Apple, and Microsoft are net volatility transmitters, while Tether, BNB, Exxon Mobil, Nextera Energy, Alphabet, and Amazon are net receivers Our results suggest that short-term volatility spillovers outweigh medium- and long-term spillovers, and that investors should be more concerned about short-term repercussions because they do not have enough time to act quickly to protect themselves from market risks when the US market is affected. Furthermore, in contrast to short-term dynamics, longer term patterns display superior hedging efficiency. The net-pairwise directional spillovers show that Alphabet and Amazon are the highest shock transmitters to other companies. The findings in this study have implications for both investors and policymakers.

Abstract:Abstract We analyze properties identified in the price volatility of Bitcoin and some of the leading cryptocurrencies namely Litecoin, Ripple, and Ethereum. We employ Heterogeneous Autoregressive models (HAR) in both a univariate and multivariate level of analysis. First, the significance of heterogeneity and jumps is examined, considering the ability of several univariate HAR models, to predict realized volatility of cryptocurrencies. Second, we examine the relevance of realized volatility jumps and covariances in the transmission of volatility spillovers among cryptocurrencies. We perform a comparative spillover analysis of the multivariate HAR models in two versions, considering variances only and covariances as well. Our results indicate that covariances and jumps inclusion lead to an increase in spillovers. The time-varying spillover analysis indicates higher dependency between Bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies mostly at short frequencies.

Abstract:This study quantifies the spillover effects among seven cryptocurrencies to explore the spillover characteristics of seven cryptocurrencies, namely, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Monero, Stellar, and NEM. The connectedness networks of returns are based on standard VAR and quantile VAR spillovers. In addition, the framework focuses on intact, pre-, and post-COVID-19 crisis sub-sample periods. Our results highlight that Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ripple are the dominant transmitters to return spillover. The strongest interconnection is found for Bitcoin/Litecoin and Ripple/Sellar pair. Interestingly, Ethereum is the unvarying recipient in the system and is influenced by most of the cryptocurrencies. Further, NEM exhibits no connection with any of the cryptocurrency in the network acting as a potential diversifier. The quantile spillovers suggest increased intensity of connectedness at right and left tails. The sub-sample analysis confirms the low network integration across the cryptocurrencies during pre-COVID period. Finally, the post-COVID period indicates tangled clusters across the cryptocurrencies. The analysis provides contrasting results as obtained in the pre-analysis phase. Implications for investors and policymakers are highlighted in the study.

Abstract:This paper examines the dynamic spillovers among the major cryptocurrencies under different market conditions and accounts for the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. We also investigate whether cryptocurrency policy (CCPO) uncertainty and cryptocurrency price (CCPR) uncertainty affect the dynamic connectedness. We adopt the Quantile-VAR approach to capture the left and right tails of the distributions corresponding to return spillovers under different market conditions. Generally, cryptocurrencies show heterogeneous responses to the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that the total spillover index (TCI) varies across quantiles and rises widely during extreme market conditions, with a noticeable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bitcoin lost its position as a dominant "hedger" during the health crisis, while Litecoin became the most dominant "hedger" and/or "safe-haven" asset before and during the pandemic period. Moreover, our analysis shows a significant impact of market uncertainties on total and net connectedness among the five cryptocurrencies. We argue that the COVID-19 pandemic crisis plays a vital role on the relationship between CCPO as well as CCPR and the dynamic connectedness across all market conditions.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive multiscale analysis of volatility spillover mechanisms among diverse financial markets utilizing a novel combination of Normalized Adaptive Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (NA-MEMD) and Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregressive (TVP-VAR) model. Our analysis spans Bitcoin, crude oil, gold, foreign exchange, emerging stock markets, and developed stock markets, examining their respective roles in global volatility transmission. Utilizing the NA-MEMD methodology and a time-varying volatility spillover index, we find that in the short-term, Bitcoin and crude oil primarily act as volatility receivers, while other markets serve as volatility transmitters. Over the long-term, gold and Bitcoin consistently act as volatility receivers, with Bitcoin and gold showing evident safe-haven effects, while the remaining markets primarily function as volatility transmitters. Particularly post-COVID-19, developed stock markets emerge as significant transmitters of volatility, largely directed towards the crude oil market. By evaluating and comparing risk transmission patterns among financial markets before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, our findings offer valuable insights that can assist policymakers and other stakeholders in managing financial uncertainty in times of global crises.
The Effect of COVID-19 on Cryptocurrencies and the Stock Market Volatility -- A Two-Stage DCC-EGARCH Model Analysis

Abstract:This research examines the correlations between the return volatility of cryptocurrencies, global stock market indices, and the spillover effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we employed a two-stage multivariate volatility exponential GARCH (EGARCH) model with an integrated dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) approach to measure the impact on the financial portfolio returns from 2019 to 2020. Moreover, we used value-at-risk (VaR) and value-at-risk measurements based on the Cornish-Fisher expansion (CFVaR). The empirical results show significant long- and short-term spillover effects. The two-stage multivariate EGARCH model's results show that the conditional volatilities of both asset portfolios surge more after positive news and respond well to previous shocks. As a result, financial assets have low unconditional volatility and the lowest risk when there are no external interruptions. Despite the financial assets' sensitivity to shocks, they exhibit some resistance to fluctuations in market confidence. The VaR performance comparison results with the assets portfolios differ. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the Dow (DJI) index reports VaR's highest loss, followed by the S&P500. Conversely, the CFVaR reports negative risk results for the entire cryptocurrency portfolio during the pandemic, except for the Ethereum (ETH).

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of volatility transmission among Bitcoin and other leading cryptocurrencies, namely, Binance USD, BNB, Cardano, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Polkadot, Polygon, Solana, Tether, USD Coin and XRP. Design/methodology/approach The multivariate BEKK-GARCH model is used with the daily data set from 1 January 2017 to 31 March 2023. The data set is analysed in its entirety and is also the COVID-19 epidemic period. Findings The study reveals that while the volatility of cryptocurrency prices is influenced by their own historical shocks and volatility, there is proof of the effects shock transmission among Bitcoin and other notable cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, the authors identify the spillover effects of volatility among all 11 pairs and provide evidence that conditional correlations with varying time constants are present, and predominantly positive for both the entire and COVID-19 outbreak periods. Practical implications The findings will be helpful to market experts who want to avoid losses in traditional assets. To develop the best risk management and hedging strategies, businesses might use the information to build asset portfolios or personalise payment methods. The use of such data by investors and portfolio managers could aid in the development of investment opportunities, risk insurance plans or hedging strategies for the management of financial portfolios. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, the use of the BEKK-GARCH model for examining the effects of volatility spillover among Bitcoin and the other eleven top cryptocurrencies has not been previously documented.

Time-varying spillovers in high-order moments among cryptocurrencies

Abstract:This study uses high-frequency (1-min) price data to examine the connectedness among the leading cryptocurrencies (i.e. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance, Cardano, Litecoin, and Ripple) at volatility and high-order (third and fourth orders in this paper) moments based on skewness and kurtosis. The sample period is from February 10, 2020, to August 20, 2022, which captures a pandemic, wartime, cryptocurrency market crashes, and the full collapse of a stablecoin. Using a time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) connectedness approach, we find that the total dynamic connectedness throughout all realized estimators grows with the time frequency of the data. Moreover, all estimators are time dependent and affected by significant events. As an exception, the Russia–Ukraine War did not increase the total connectedness among cryptocurrencies. Analysis of third- and fourth-order moments reveals additional dynamics not captured by the second moments, highlighting the importance of analyzing higher moments when studying systematic crash and fat-tail risks in the cryptocurrency market. Additional tests show that rolling-window-based VAR models do not reveal these patterns. Regarding the directional risk transmissions, Binance was a consistent net transmitter in all three connectedness systems and it dominated the volatility connectedness network. In contrast, skewness and kurtosis connectedness networks were dominated by Litecoin and Bitcoin and Ripple were net shock receivers in all three networks. These findings are expected to serve as a guide for portfolio optimization, risk management, and policy-making practices.

Abstract:How do cryptocurrency prices evolve? Is there any interdependence among cryptocurrency returns and/or volatilities? Are there any return spillovers and volatility spillovers between the cryptocurrency market and other financial markets? To answer these questions, we use GARCH-in-mean models to examine the relationship between volatility and returns of leading cryptocurrencies, to investigate spillovers within the cryptocurrency market, and also from the cryptocurrency market to other financial markets. Overall, we find statistically significant transmission of shocks and volatilities among the leading cryptocurrencies. We also find statistically significant spillover effects from the cryptocurrency market to other financial markets in the United States, as well as in other leading economies (Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan).

Abstract:This paper examines return and volatility connectedness between Bitcoin, traditional financial assets (Crude Oil, Gold, Stocks, Bonds, and the United States Dollar-USD), and major global uncertainty measures (the Economic Policy Uncertainty-EPU, the Twitter-based Economic Uncertainty-TEU, and the Volatility Index-VIX) from April 29, 2013, to June 30, 2020. To this end, the Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregression (TVP-VAR) model, dynamic connectedness approaches, and network analyses are used. The results indicate that total spillover indices reached unprecedented levels during COVID-19 and have remained high since then. The evidence also confirms the high return and volatility spillovers across markets during the COVID-19 era. Regarding the return spillovers, Gold is the centre of the system and demonstrates the safe heaven properties. Bitcoin is a net transmitter of volatility spillovers to other markets, particularly during the COVID-19 period. Furthermore, the causality-in-variance Lagrange Multiplier (LM) and the Fourier LM tests' results confirm a unidirectional volatility transmission from Bitcoin to Gold, Stocks, Bonds, the VIX and Crude Oil. Interestingly the EPU is the only global factor that causing higher volatility in Bitcoin. Several potential implications of the results are also discussed.

Abstract:Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading cryptocurrencies have undergone significant price fluctuations, prompting widespread interest in the interdependence and spillover effects among cryptocurrency markets, as well as in identifying the key cryptocurrencies that drive market movements. This study contributes to the existing literature by utilising innovative vector wavelet coherence (VWC) and wavelet local multiple correlation (WLMC) frameworks to investigate the time-frequency co-movements among four cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, and Binance). By exploring the co-movements across multiple time scales over a period from 01/01/2020 to 10/04/2023 through continuous and discrete wavelet coherency analysis, we identify four key empirical findings. Firstly, the returns connectedness is stronger than the volatility connectedness. Secondly, high-frequency co-movements are more erratic and correspond to positive and negative unexpected news, while low-frequency co-movements vary with changes in US monetary policy. Thirdly, Tether and Binance exhibit the weakest returns and volatility connectedness with other cryptocurrencies. Lastly, Ethereum and Tether (not Bitcoin) are the primary cryptocurrencies that account for returns and volatility movements in the market. We discuss the implications of these findings for various stakeholders in cryptocurrency markets.

Abstract:This paper examines the dynamic connectedness of return- and volatility spillovers among cryptocurrency index (CRIX), Gold, and uncertainty measures. Apart from traditional uncertainty measures, we also consider two novel uncertainty measures: Cryptocurrency Policy Uncertainty and Cryptocurrency Price Uncertainty indices. We observe that cryptocurrency policy uncertainty is the main transmitter of the return spillovers to other variables. In addition, Gold is a net receiver of both the return and the volatility spillovers. These results are valid under bearish, bullish, and normal market conditions. Our findings contribute to the literature considering the spillover effect between cryptocurrencies and other assets and their determinants.

Abstract:This paper examines the dynamics of the asymmetric volatility spillovers across four major cryptocurrencies comprising nearly 61% of cryptocurrency market capitalization and covering both conventional (Bitcoin and Ethereum) and Islamic (Stellar and Ripple) cryptocurrencies. Using a novel time-varying parameter vector autoregression (TVP-VAR) asymmetric connectedness approach combined with a high frequency (hourly) dataset ranging from 1st June 2018 to 22nd July 2022, we find that (i) good and bad spillovers are time-varying; (ii) bad volatility spillovers are more pronounced than good spillovers; (iii) a strong asymmetry in the volatility spillovers exists in the cryptocurrency market; and (iv) conventional cryptocurrencies dominate Islamic cryptocurrencies. Specifically, Ethereum is the major net transmitter of positive volatility spillovers while Stellar is the main net transmitter of negative volatility spillovers.

Abstract:This research investigates the effects of several measures of Twitter-based sentiment on cryptocurrencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Innovative economic, as well as market uncertainty measures based on Tweets, along the lines of Baker et al. (2021), are employed in an attempt to measure how investor sentiment influences the returns and volatility of major cryptocurrencies, developing on non-linear Granger causality tests. Evidence suggests that Twitter-derived sentiment mainly influences Litecoin, Ethereum, Cardano and Ethereum Classic when considering mean estimates. Moreover, uncertainty measures non-linearly influence each cryptocurrency examined, at all quantiles except for Cardano at lower quantiles, and both Ripple and Stellar at both lower and higher quantiles. Cryptocurrencies with lower values are found to be unaffected by investor sentiment at extreme values, however, prove to be profitable due to more aligned investor behaviour.

Abstract:The rise of cryptocurrencies as alternative financial investments, with potential safe-haven and hedging properties, highlights the need to examine their market efficiency. This study is the first to investigate the combined impact of liquidity and volatility features of cryptocurrencies on their price delays. Using a wide spectrum of cryptocurrencies, we investigate whether the COVID-19 outbreak has affected market efficiency by studying price delays to market information. We find that as liquidity increases and volatility decreases, cryptocurrencies demonstrate stronger market efficiency. Additionally, we show that price delay differences during the COVID-19 outbreak increase with higher levels of illiquidity, particularly for highly volatile quintiles. We suggest that perceived risks and high transaction costs in illiquid and highly volatile cryptocurrencies reduce active traders’ willingness to engage in arbitrage trading, leading to increased market inefficiencies. Our findings are relevant to investors, aiding in improving their decision-making processes and enhancing their investment efficiency. Our paper also presents significant implications for policymakers, emphasizing the need for reforms aimed at enhancing the speed at which information is incorporated into cryptocurrency returns. These reforms would help mitigate market distortions and increase the sustainability of cryptocurrency markets.

We employ a hybrid approach to derive these risk measures that integrate GARCH models, extreme value models, and copula functions. This framework uses a bivariate portfolio approach involving cryptocurrency data and traditional financial indices. To estimate the above risks of these portfolio structures, we employ symmetric and asymmetric GARCH and both tail flexible EVT models as marginal to model the marginal distribution of each return series and apply different copula functions to connect the pairs of marginal distributions into a multivariate distribution. The empirical findings indicate that the eGARCH EVT-based copula model adeptly captures intricate dependencies, surpassing conventional methodologies like Historical simulations and t-distributed parametric in VaR estimation. At the same time, the HS method proves superior for ES, and the t-distributed parametric method outperforms RVaR. Eventually, the Diebold-Yilmaz approach will be applied to compute risk spillovers between four sets of asset sequences. This phenomenon implies that cryptocurrencies reveal substantial spillover effects among themselves but minimal impact on other assets. From this, it can be concluded that cryptocurrencies propose diversification benefits and do not provide hedging advantages within an investor's portfolio. Our results underline RVaR superiority over ES regarding regulatory arbitrage and model misspecification. The conclusions of this study will benefit investors and financial market professionals who aspire to comprehend digital currencies as a novel asset class and attain perspicuity in regulatory arbitrage.

Abstract:Purpose –The COVID-19 pandemic has generated exceptional response of the financial markets and exceptional increase in the volatility of asset classes. The aim of this study is to establish influence of daily ambiguity surrounding infectious disease. In particular,the purpose is to test as to how the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have generated volatility spillovers both onto and within traditional financial market assets.Design/methodology/approach –In this study, the methodological approach is developed upon a time-varying robust Granger-causality methodology, which is further designed to incorporate macroeconomic variables using sentiment indices and policy uncertainty indices as additional control variables.Findings –The analysis reveals that EMVID index has a vital role in driving both price and volatility of the asset classes being investigated. It also has a considerably varying effect on these financial assets. It is also shown that there are major differences of international response across the markets for equities, oil, gold and cryptocurrency. Furthermore, the transmission of volatility spillovers in the early Asian occurrence of the COVID-19 epidemic show that the financial markets that did not adequately identify the threat in the earlier phase of the pandemic.Discussion –The results help both investors and policymakers in their decision-making process as it is shown that although oil and bond markets presented some early signs for the volatility transmission, it was mainly currencyand in particular cryptocurrency markets with more immediate and influential effects. Furthermore, the results provide support for the increasing maturity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. On the other hand, they also present some important outcomes for regulatory authorities and policymakers. For instance, while the currency markets demand for cash as a catalyst of volatility and oil prices and demand adapt due to worldwide economic recession, cryptocurrency market would not be expected to respond in the same way. This result has the implication that cryptocurrencies were employed as a safe-haven vehicle during the onset of this incredible event
