Abstract:The full quasistatic thermomechanical system of PDEs, describing water diffusion with the possibility of freezing and melting in a visco-elasto-plastic porous solid, is studied in detail under the hypothesis that the pressure-saturation hysteresis relation is given in terms of the Preisach hysteresis operator. Abstract:Took into consideration the coupling effect of thermo, hydraulics and mechanics, a set of thermo–hydro-mechanical coupled wave equations for fluid–saturated soil are developed. In these wave equations, the $P_{3}$-wave in solid phase and $P_{4}$-wave in fluid phase are coupled into $T$-wave in fluid–saturated soil by the assumption that the temperature of the solid phase is equal to the temperature of liquid phase at the same position. The dispersion equations for the thermo-elastic wave, which can be degraded to the equations for elastic wave in fluid–saturated soil, are derived from the above equations by introducing four potential functions. Then, these equations are solved numerically. The characteristics of wave phase velocity, attenuation and the effect of thermal expansion, initial temperature and porosity, etc., on phase velocities of $P_{1}$-, $P_{2}$-, and $T$-wave are discussed. As a reference, the characteristics of the propagation of elastic waves in fluid–saturated soil are also studied. The computation results show that (1) the phase velocity of $P_{1}$-wave obtained by the theory of thermoporoelascity (THM) is faster than that by the theory of poroelasticity (HM); (2) the attenuation of $P_{1}$-wave obtained by either the theory of THM or HM are consistent; (3) the dissemination characteristics of $P_{2}$-wave are almost consistent; (4) the phase velocity of $T$-wave is the slowest among the three compressional waves; and (5) The attenuation versus frequency characteristic of $T$-wave is similar to that of $P_{2}$-wave.

Abstract:Phase transition in porous materials is relevant within different engineering applications, such as freezing in saturated soil or pancake sea ice. Mathematical descriptions of such processes can be derived based on Biot's consolidation theory or the Theory of Porous Media. Depending on parameters such as density ratio, permeability or compressibility of the solid matrix, either small or finite deformations occur. Numerical solution procedures for the general, finite deformation case, suffers from instabilities and high computational costs. Simplifications, assuming small deformations, increases stability and computational efficiency. Within this work shortcomings of simplified theories based on Biot and linearisations of the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) are systematically studied. In order to determine the interaction of the different model parameters a non-dimensional model for poro-elasticity is presented. Based on a characteristic test-case including phase-transition and consolidation, the simplified models are compared to the fully non-linear TPM, focusing on mass errors as well as the time behaviour of the solution. Taking further into account the efficiency of discretisation based on different primal variables and finite-element-spaces, a guideline for selecting an appropriate combination of model, kinematic assumption and discretisation scheme is presented.

Abstract:The phase change problem in porous media has attracted extensive attention due to its complexity of both the heat transfer process and pore structure. This study investigates the mechanisms governing the freezing of water at the pore scale in a porous model, employing a combination of experimental and numerical approaches. Mathematical-physical model is used to simulate the phase change process in porous structures. Experiments are conducted on water freezing in porous resin and steel, with a pore distance of 500 μm. The evolutions of the phase interface and temperature field during the freezing process are analyzed. Results demonstrate good agreement between the simulations and experiments. Moreover, when the thermal conductivity of the solid skeleton is lower than that of the fluid (porous resin), the phase interface in the pore evolves from concave to convex, with a non-linear change in relative curvature. The temperature gradient of the fluid and skeleton within the pore channels first decreases and then increases. However, when solid skeletons have higher thermal conductivities than the fluid (porous steel), the evolution of the phase interface and its relative curvature, as well as the temperature gradient in the pore are different from the other case.

Abstract:A phase transition model for porous media in consolidation is studied. The model is able to describe the phenomenon of fluid-segregation during the consolidation process, i.e., the coexistence of two phases differing on fluid content inside the porous medium under static load. Considering pure Darcy dissipation, the dynamics is described by a Cahn–Hilliard-like system of partial differential equations (PDE). The goal is to study the dynamics of the formation of stationary fluid-rich bubbles. The evolution of the strain and fluid density profiles of the porous medium is analysed in two physical situations: fluid free to flow through the boundaries of the medium and fluid flow prevented at one of the two boundaries. Moreover, an analytic result on the position of the interface between the two phases is provided.

Abstract:Hysteresis in the pressure-saturation relation in unsaturated porous media, owing to surface tension on the liquid-gas interface, exhibits strong degeneracy in the resulting mass balance equation. As an extension of previous existence and uniqueness results, we prove that under physically admissible initial conditions and without mass exchange with the exterior, the unique global solution of the fluid diffusion problem exists and asymptotically converges as time tends to infinity to a possibly non-homogeneous mass distribution and an a priori unknown constant pressure.

Abstract:This work deals with numerical simulation of water freezing and thawing in a complex three-dimensional geometry of a porous medium. The porous structure is represented by a virtual container filled with glass beads. Phase transition modeling is approached at both macro-scale and micro-scale, combining heat transfer in a heterogeneous medium and a phase-field approximation of the Gibbs-Thomson relation by means of the Allen-Cahn equation. The formulation of the model contains novel components tailored for the given purpose. At the macro-scale, surface tension effects are negligible and phase transition focusing based on temperature can replace the Allen-Cahn equation. In contrast to that, simulations of equilibrium states at the micro-scale allow to eliminate the heat equation by assuming constant supercooling. For numerical solution, an efficient hybrid parallel algorithm based on the finite volume method and the Runge-Kutta-Merson solver with adaptive time stepping are employed. The results of different model variants at different scales are discussed. In a parametric study, the full phase-field model is demonstrated to deliver consistent results across a wide range of surface tension values, exhibiting curvature-induced premelting if surface tension is artificially exaggerated. As surface tension tends to the realistic values, the results of the phase-field approach those of the simplifed temperature-driven phase transition model. In addition, micro-scale simulations of water freezing at different supercooling values aim to predict the unfrozen water content and compare the results with data from literature. Numerical stability, accuracy, and computational costs are also discussed.

Abstract:The transition between two different phases of a substance is an everyday process, which is encountered amongst others in the geomechanical field, for example, in CO2 storage. The transition from the liquid to the gaseous phase and vice versa crosses the so‐called two‐phase region, where both phases coexist for specific temperature and pressure conditions. In this context, two mass‐balance equations are defined for both fluid phases, respectively. These two equations are coupled by the mass‐production term, which describes the mass transfer between the two phases during phase transition. A great variety of models exist to describe phase transition processes in zero dimensional systems, e. g., batch reactors. However, only a few articles can be found, where phase changes inside a porous medium are discussed. An approach to the latter case can be based on the well‐founded, continuum‐mechanical Theory of Porous Media (TPM), which allows to describe multi‐phasic flow inside a deformable porous medium. By evaluating the entropy inequality, a constitutive relation for the mass production term can be derived. This term compares to the two‐film theory, the standard model for the description of mass transfer in a two‐phase system. Adapting this relation to porous media leads to a mass transfer coefficient, which represents the kinetic behaviour of the molecules of the substance under consideration and the influence of the solid porous material on the phase transition process. For lack of experimental data, the mass transfer coefficient will be composed of the transfer coefficient from classical thermodynamics and geometrical information of the porous‐media structure. The thermodynamical behaviour of the fluid is described by, e. g., the Redlich‐Kwong‐Soave equation of state. Simulations conducted with either changing temperature or pressure boundary conditions are compared with simulations, where only one mass balance is used for both fluid phases and the mass transition is only visible by the jump in density. Abstract:A poromechanical model of partially saturated deformable porous media is proposed based on a phase field approach at modeling the behavior of the mixture of liquid water and wet air, which saturates the pore space, the phase field being the saturation (ratio). While the standard retention curve is expected still^ to provide the intrinsic retention properties of the porous skeleton, depending on the porous texture, an enhanced description of surface tension between the wetting (liquid water) and the non-wetting (wet air) fluid, occupying the pore space, is stated considering a regularization of the phase field model based on an additional contribution to the overall free energy depending on the saturation gradient. The aim is to provide a more refined description of surface tension interactions.An enhanced constitutive relation for the capillary pressure is established together with a suitable generalization of Darcy's law, in which the gradient of the capillary pressure is replaced by the gradient of the so-called generalized chemical potential, which also accounts for the “force”, associated to the local free energy of the phase field model. A micro-scale heuristic interpretation of the novel constitutive law of capillary pressure is proposed, in order to compare the envisaged model with that one endowed with the concept of average interfacial area.The considered poromechanical model is formulated within the framework of strain gradient theory in order to account for possible effects, at laboratory scale, of the micro-scale hydro-mechanical couplings between highly localized flows (fingering) and localized deformations of the skeleton (fracturing).

Abstract:Hysteresis in the pressure-saturation relation in unsaturated porous media, which is due to surface tension on the liquid-gas interface, exhibits strong degeneracy in the resulting mass balance equation. Solutions to such degenerate equations have been recently constructed by the method of convexification even if the permeability coefficient depends on the hysteretic saturation. The model is extended here to the case that the solid matrix material is viscoelastic and that the system is coupled with a gravity driven moisture flux. The existence of a solution is proved by compact anisotropic embedding involving Orlicz spaces with respect to the time variable.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new thermodynamically consistent phase transition model describing the evolution of a liquid substance, e.g., water, in a rigid container $\Omega$ when we freeze the container. Since the density $\varrho_{2}$ of ice with volume fraction $\beta_{2}$, is lower than the density $\varrho_{1}$ of water with volume fraction $\beta_{1}$, experiments - for instance the freezing of a glass bottle filled with water - show that the water pressure increases up to the rupture of the bottle. When the container is not impermeable, freezing may produce a non-homogeneous material, for instance water ice or sorbet. Here we describe a general class of phase transition processes including this example as particular case. Moreover, we study the resulting nonlinear and singular PDE system from the analytical viewpoint recovering existence of a global (in time) weak solution and also uniqueness for some particular choices of the nonlinear functions involved.

Abstract:Darcy's law for porous media transport is given a new local thermodynamic basis in terms of the grand potential of confined fluids. The local effective pressure gradient is determined using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics, and the hydraulic conductivity and permeability are investigated. The transport coefficients are determined for single-phase flow in face-centered cubic lattices of solid spheres. The porosity changed from that in the closest packing of spheres to near unity in a pure fluid, while the fluid mass density varied from that of a dilute gas to a dense liquid. The permeability varied between \SI{5.7e-20}{\meter^2} and \SI{5.5e-17}{\meter^2}, showing a porosity-dependent Klinkenberg effect. Both transport coefficients depended on the average fluid mass density and porosity but in different ways. These results set the stage for a non-equilibrium thermodynamic investigation of coupled transport of multi-phase fluids in complex media.

Homogenization of Phase Transition Problems with Evolving Microstructure

Abstract:We consider the mathematical analysis and homogenization of a moving boundary problem posed for a highly heterogeneous, periodically perforated domain. More specifically, we are looking at a one-phase thermo-elasticity system with phase transformations where small inclusions, initially periodically distributed, are growing or shrinking based on a kinetic under-cooling-type law and where surface stresses are created based on the curvature of the phase interface. This growth is assumed to be uniform in each individual cell of the the perforated domain. After transforming to the initial reference configuration (utilizing the Hanzawa transformation), we use the contraction mapping principle to show the existence of a unique solution for a possibly small but $\varespilon$-independent time interval ($\varespilon$ is here the scale of heterogeneity). In the homogenization limit, we discover a macroscopic thermo-elasticity problem which is strongly non-linearly coupled (via an internal parameter called height function) to local changes in geometry. As a direct byproduct of the mathematical analysis work, we present an alternative equivalent formulation which lends itself to an effective precomputing strategy that is very much needed as the limit problem is computationally expensive.

Abstract:We develop constitutive equations for multi-component, multi-phase, macro-scale flow in a porous medium exposed to temperature-, composition-, and pressure -gradients. The porous medium is non-deformable. We define the pressure and the composition of the representative elementary volume (REV) in terms of the volume and surface averaged pressure and the saturation, and the respective driving forces from these variables. New contributions due to varying porosity or surface tension offer explanations for non-Darcy behavior. The interaction of a thermal and mechanical driving forces give thermal osmosis. An experimental program is suggested to verify Onsager symmetry in the transport coefficients.

Abstract:This article presents a novel mathematical model of hygro-thermal processes in a porous material, partially saturated with liquid water, exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of pore water. Water–ice phase transition is modeled by means of a kinetic approach considering water supercooling and thermodynamic non-equilibrium of the phases, what allows taking into account a hysteresis of ice content during freezing–thawing of moist porous materials. The model equations are solved for two numerical examples. The first one deals with laboratory differential scanning calorimetry test of a cement mortar saturated with water and exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of water (down to −40°C). The results are used for experimental validation of the proposed model, confirming its accuracy and practical usefulness. In the second example, the mesh refinement test is performed and the influence of the solid–liquid water phase change model parameters on the simulation results for a 1D model problem concerning water freezing–thawing are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:<p>Different from normal and high temperature, pore water will freeze at low temperature, and thus the heat transfer process in rocks is more complex but less investigated. In this paper, we establish a model to describe the process of heat transfer in rocks with phase transition. The kinetic feature of phase transition is considered here, in comparison with the conventional equilibrium model that assumes the phase transition process is instantaneous. The established model is calibrated and validated by heating tests of water-saturated sandstone and coal samples. In particular, our model can reproduce the observed temperature plateau located above the melting point (0 °C), which however cannot be explained by the equilibrium model. When the kinetic rate coefficient is high enough, the temperature plateau approaches the melting point, and our model reduces to the equilibrium model. Further parameter analysis is also conducted on the influencing factors such as kinetic rate coefficient, specific heat, convection coefficient, and environment temperature.</p>

A degenerating PDE system for phase transitions and damage

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze a PDE system arising in the modeling of phase transition and damage phenomena in thermoviscoelastic materials. The resulting evolution equations in the unknowns \theta (absolute temperature), u (displacement), and \chi (phase/damage parameter) are strongly nonlinearly coupled. Moreover, the momentum equation for u contains \chi-dependent elliptic operators, which degenerate at the pure phases (corresponding to the values \chi=0 and \chi=1), making the whole system degenerate. That is why, we have to resort to a suitable weak solvability notion for the analysis of the problem: it consists of the weak formulations of the heat and momentum equation, and, for the phase/damage parameter \chi, of a generalization of the principle of virtual powers, partially mutuated from the theory of rate-independent damage processes. To prove an existence result for this weak formulation, an approximating problem is introduced, where the elliptic degeneracy of the displacement equation is ruled out: in the framework of damage models, this corresponds to allowing for partial damage only. For such an approximate system, global-in-time existence and well-posedness results are established in various cases. Then, the passage to the limit to the degenerate system is performed via suitable variational techniques.

Abstract:It is shown that the problem of moisture propagation in porous media with a nonlinear relation between the mass flux and the pressure gradient as a counterpart of the Darcy law exhibits the property of bounded speed of propagation even in the case of a hysteresis relation between the capillary pressure and the moisture content. The paper specifies conditions for existence and uniqueness of solutions, and provides an upper bound for the moisture propagation speed.

It is well known that the generalized Darcy law describing multiphase flow in porous media has some shortcomings. In particular, it cannot explain hysteresis effects in the capillary pressure--saturation curve which have been observed in measurements. In this work, we derive a numerically tractable micro-macro model including coupled generalized Darcy's laws that still includes the microscale dynamics which are responsible, e.g., for hysteresis effects. For this purpose, we extend the two-scale expansion approach of periodic homogenization to include different time scales which allows us to start from a fully instationary Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard model at the pore scale as microscale. Identifying and separating the time scales allows us to derive local fast scale equations describing the microscale dynamics and global slow-scale equations giving rise to the macroscopic Darcy law.
