Abstract:Biopsy of a tumor site has long been the gold standard for the diagnosis of malignancy. Advanced sequencing technology has enabled us to study the molecular changes driving a particular cancer. As we move towards the molecular era of medicine, repeat tumor biopsies are often obtained to assess for development of resistance, which has both prognostic and therapeutic implications. However, the logistics of obtaining repeat tumor biopsies are complicated—many patients with advanced malignancies are unable or unwilling to undergo another invasive procedure and the skillset and personnel required for these procedures are often time consuming, expensive, and leads to delay in care. Furthermore, it is known that tumors develop heterogeneity over time and disease sites and therefore one biopsy may not provide a complete picture of the tumoral landscape.
An Explainable Classification Method Based on Complex Scaling in Histopathology Images for Lung and Colon Cancer

Abstract:Lung and colon cancers are among the leading causes of human mortality and morbidity. Early diagnostic work up of these diseases include radiography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography. Certain blood tumor markers for carcinoma lung and colon also aid in the diagnosis. Despite the lab and diagnostic imaging, histopathology remains the gold standard, which provides cell-level images of tissue under examination. To read these images, a histopathologist spends a large amount of time. Furthermore, using conventional diagnostic methods involve high-end equipment as well. This leads to limited number of patients getting final diagnosis and early treatment. In addition, there are chances of inter-observer errors. In recent years, deep learning has shown promising results in the medical field. This has helped in early diagnosis and treatment according to severity of disease. With the help of EfficientNetV2 models that have been cross-validated and tested fivefold, we propose an automated method for detecting lung (lung adenocarcinoma, lung benign, and lung squamous cell carcinoma) and colon (colon adenocarcinoma and colon benign) cancer subtypes from LC25000 histopathology images. A state-of-the-art deep learning architecture based on the principles of compound scaling and progressive learning, EfficientNetV2 large, medium, and small models. An accuracy of 99.97%, AUC of 99.99%, F1-score of 99.97%, balanced accuracy of 99.97%, and Matthew's correlation coefficient of 99.96% were obtained on the test set using the EffcientNetV2-L model for the 5-class classification of lung and colon cancers, outperforming the existing methods. Using gradCAM, we created visual saliency maps to precisely locate the vital regions in the histopathology images from the test set where the models put more attention during cancer subtype predictions. This visual saliency maps may potentially assist pathologists to design better treatment strategies. Therefore, it is possible to use the proposed pipeline in clinical settings for fully automated lung and colon cancer detection from histopathology images with explainability.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to contribute to the development of approaches for the classification and segmentation of various gastrointestinal (GI) cancer diseases, such as dyed lifted polyps, dyed resection margins, esophagitis, normal cecum, normal pylorus, normal Z line, polyps, and ulcerative colitis. This research is relevant and essential because of the current challenges related to the absence of efficient diagnostic tools for early diagnostics of GI cancers, which are fundamental for improving the diagnosis of these common diseases. To address the above challenges, we propose a new hybrid segmentation model, U-MaskNet, which is a combination of U-Net and Mask R-CNN models. Here, U-Net is utilized for pixel-wise classification and Mask R-CNN for instance segmentation, together forming a solution for classifying and segmenting GI cancer. The Kvasir dataset, which includes 8000 endoscopic images of various GI cancers, is utilized to validate the proposed methodology. The experimental results clearly demonstrated that the novel proposed model provided superior segmentation compared to other well-known models, such as DeepLabv3+, FCN, and DeepMask, as well as improved classification performance compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) models, including LeNet-5, AlexNet, VGG-16, ResNet-50, and the Inception Network. The quantitative analysis revealed that our proposed model outperformed the other models, achieving a precision of 98.85%, recall of 98.49%, and F1 score of 98.68%. Additionally, the novel model achieved a Dice coefficient of 94.35% and IoU of 89.31%. Consequently, the developed model increased the accuracy and reliability in detecting and segmenting GI cancer, and it was proven that the proposed model can potentially be used for improving the diagnostic process and, consequently, patient care in the clinical environment. This work highlights the benefits of integrating the U-Net and Mask R-CNN models, opening the way for further research in medical image segmentation.

Deep Learning Based Multi-Organ Segmentation And Metastases Segmentation In Whole Mouse Body And The Cryo-Imaging Cancer Imaging And Therapy Analysis Platform (Citap)

Abstract:We are creating a cancer imaging and therapy analysis platform (CITAP), featuring image analysis/visualization software and multi-spectral cryo-imaging to support innovations in preclinical cancer research. Cryo-imaging repeatedly sections and tiles microscope images of the tissue block face, providing color anatomy and molecular fluorescence 3D microscopic imaging over vast volumes as large as a whole mouse, with single-metastatic-cell sensitivity. We utilized DenseVNet from NiftyNet for multi-organ segmentation on color anatomy images to further analyze major organs. The proposed algorithm was trained/validated/tested on 70/5/4 color anatomy volumes with manually labeled lung, liver, and spleen. The mean Dice similarity coefficient for lung, liver, and spleen in the test set were 0.89 +/- 0.01, 0.92 +/- 0.01, and 0.83 +/- 0.04. We deem Dice coefficient of >0.9 good for analyzing distribution of metastases. To segment GFP-labeled breast cancer metastases in high resolution green fluorescence images, big and small candidates were segmented using marker-based watershed and multi-scale Laplacian of Gaussian filtering followed by Otsu segmentation respectively. A bounding box around each candidate was classified with a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). In one test mouse with 226 metastases, CNN-based classification and random forest with hand-crafted features achieved sensitivity/specificity of 0.95/0.89 and 0.92/0.82, respectively. DenseVNet-based organ segmentation allows automatic quantification of GFP-labeled metastases in each organ of interest. In the test mouse with 226 metastases, 78 (1 with size >2mm, 21 with size 0.5mm-2mm, and 56 with size <0.5mm) and 24 (1 with size >2mm, 11 with size 0.5-2mm, and 12 with size <0.5mm) were found in the lung and liver respectively.
Applying dual models on optimized LSTM with U-net segmentation for breast cancer diagnosis using mammogram images

Abstract:Background of the study: Breast cancer is the most fatal disease that widely affects women. When the cancerous lumps grow from the cells of the breast, it causes breast cancer. Self-analysis and regular medical check-ups help for detecting the disease earlier and enhance the survival rate. Hence, an automated breast cancer detection system in mammograms can assist clinicians in the patient's treatment. In medical techniques, the categorization of breast cancer becomes challenging for investigators and researchers. The advancement in deep learning approaches has established more attention to their advantages to medical imaging issues, especially for breast cancer detection. Aim: The research work plans to develop a novel hybrid model for breast cancer diagnosis with the support of optimized deep-learning architecture. Methods: The required images are gathered from the benchmark datasets. These collected datasets are used in three pre-processing approaches like "Median Filtering, Histogram Equalization, and morphological operation", which helps to remove unwanted regions from the images. Then, the pre-processed images are applied to the Optimized U-net-based tumor segmentation phase for obtaining accurate segmented results along with the optimization of certain parameters in U-Net by employing "Adapted-Black Widow Optimization (A-BWO)". Further, the detection is performed in two different ways that is given as model 1 and model 2. In model 1, the segmented tumors are used to extract the significant patterns with the help of the "Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Local Gradient pattern (LGP)". Further, these extracted patterns are utilized in the "Dual Model accessed Optimized Long Short-Term Memory (DM-OLSTM)" for performing breast cancer detection and the detected score 1 is obtained. In model 2, the same segmented tumors are given into the different variants of CNN, such as "VGG19, Resnet150, and Inception". The extracted deep features from three CNN-based approaches are fused to form a single set of deep features. These fused deep features are inserted into the developed DM-OLSTM for getting the detected score 2 for breast cancer diagnosis. In the final phase of the hybrid model, the score 1 and score 2 obtained from model 1 and model 2 are averaged to get the final detection output. Results: The accuracy and F1-score of the offered DM-OLSTM model are achieved at 96 % and 95 %. Conclusion: Experimental analysis proves that the recommended methodology achieves better performance by analyzing with the benchmark dataset. Hence, the designed model is helpful for detecting breast cancer in real-time applications.

Abstract:Breast cancer significantly impacts women's health, with ultrasound being crucial for lesion assessment. To enhance diagnostic accuracy, computer-aided detection (CAD) systems have attracted considerable interest. This study introduces a prospective deep learning architecture called "Multi-modal Multi-task Network" (3MT-Net). 3MT-Net utilizes a combination of clinical data, B-mode, and color Doppler ultrasound. We have designed the AM-CapsNet network, specifically tailored to extract crucial tumor features from ultrasound. To combine clinical data in 3MT-Net, we have employed a cascaded cross-attention to fuse information from three distinct sources. To ensure the preservation of pertinent information during the fusion of high-dimensional and low-dimensional data, we adopt the idea of ensemble learning and design an optimization algorithm to assign weights to different modalities. Eventually, 3MT-Net performs binary classification of benign and malignant lesions as well as pathological subtype classification. In addition, we retrospectively collected data from nine medical centers. To ensure the broad applicability of the 3MT-Net, we created two separate testsets and conducted extensive experiments. Furthermore, a comparative analysis was conducted between 3MT-Net and the industrial-grade CAD product S-detect. The AUC of 3MT-Net surpasses S-Detect by 1.4% to 3.8%.
GRU-Net: Gaussian Attention Aided Dense Skip Connection Based MultiResUNet for Breast Histopathology Image Segmentation

Abstract:Breast cancer is a major global health concern. Pathologists face challenges in analyzing complex features from pathological images, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. Therefore, efficient computer-based diagnostic tools are needed for early detection and treatment planning. This paper presents a modified version of MultiResU-Net for histopathology image segmentation, which is selected as the backbone for its ability to analyze and segment complex features at multiple scales and ensure effective feature flow via skip connections. The modified version also utilizes the Gaussian distribution-based Attention Module (GdAM) to incorporate histopathology-relevant text information in a Gaussian distribution. The sampled features from the Gaussian text feature-guided distribution highlight specific spatial regions based on prior knowledge. Finally, using the Controlled Dense Residual Block (CDRB) on skip connections of MultiResU-Net, the information is transferred from the encoder layers to the decoder layers in a controlled manner using a scaling parameter derived from the extracted spatial features. We validate our approach on two diverse breast cancer histopathology image datasets: TNBC and MonuSeg, demonstrating superior segmentation performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Abstract:The success of deep learning, a subfield of Artificial Intelligence technologies in the field of image analysis and computer can be leveraged for building better decision support systems for clinical radiological settings. Detecting and segmenting tumorous tissues in brain region using deep learning and artificial intelligence is one such scenario, where radiologists can benefit from the computer based second opinion or decision support, for detecting the severity of disease, and survival of the subject with an accurate and timely clinical diagnosis. Gliomas are the aggressive form of brain tumors having irregular shape and ambiguous boundaries, making them one of the hardest tumors to detect, and often require a combined analysis of different types of radiological scans to make an accurate detection. In this paper, we present a fully automatic deep learning method for brain tumor segmentation in multimodal multi-contrast magnetic resonance image scans. The proposed approach is based on light weight UNET architecture, consisting of a multimodal CNN encoder-decoder based computational model. Using the publicly available Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) Challenge 2018 dataset, available from the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) society, our novel approach based on proposed light-weight UNet model, with no data augmentation requirements and without use of heavy computational resources, has resulted in an improved performance, as compared to the previous models in the challenge task that used heavy computational architectures and resources and with different data augmentation approaches. This makes the model proposed in this work more suitable for remote, extreme and low resource health care settings.

Abstract:Although the U-Net architecture has been extensively used for segmentation of medical images, we address two of its shortcomings in this work. Firstly, the accuracy of vanilla U-Net degrades when the target regions for segmentation exhibit significant variations in shape and size. Even though the U-Net already possesses some capability to analyze features at various scales, we propose to explicitly add multi-scale feature maps in each convolutional module of the U-Net encoder to improve segmentation of histology images. Secondly, the accuracy of a U-Net model also suffers when the annotations for supervised learning are noisy or incomplete. This can happen due to the inherent difficulty for a human expert to identify and delineate all instances of specific pathology very precisely and accurately. We address this challenge by introducing auxiliary confidence maps that emphasize less on the boundaries of the given target regions. Further, we utilize the bootstrapping properties of the deep network to address the missing annotation problem intelligently. In our experiments on a private dataset of breast cancer lymph nodes, where the primary task was to segment germinal centres and sinus histiocytosis, we observed substantial improvement over a U-Net baseline based on the two proposed augmentations.

Abstract:One of the most prevalent forms of malignant tumor affecting the digestive system is the Colorectal Cancer (CRC). Due to the recurrent nature of occurrence of CRC tumors the morbidity and mortality rate associated with CRC tumors is very high, making it the fourth leading cause of cancer worldwide. Although colonoscopy, is considered as pre-dominant screening mechanism for detection of CRC, over the recent years several researchers have attempted in developing AI diagnostic tools for segmenting colonic polyps. However, manual intervention and decreased accuracy rate is a major drawback witnessed by these approaches. In this study, we propose a novel automated colonic polyp segmentation mechanism using U-Net and chroma based deformable model termed as ContourNet. The proposed model eliminates the need for manual identification of region of interest irrespective of the high degree of variability between the lesion and non-lesion pixels. The model considers the chromaticity and statistical information from the identified region of interest to evolve the contour close to the affected area. The proposed algorithm was developed using Clinic CVC dataset for training, and a test accuracy of 94% was obtained. The generalization ability of the proposed design is validated on three different datasets, considering all the images as test set, a high degree of accuracy was obtained in identifying the affected regions. Thereby the results obtained prove the ability of the proposed method to be adopted in developing a CAD tool in detection of pathologies associated with gastroenterology in contrast to the state of art methods reported in literature.

Abstract:Tumors are an important health concern in modern times. Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of death for women. Breast cancer is rapidly becoming the leading cause of mortality among women globally. Early detection of breast cancer allows patients to obtain appropriate therapy, increasing their probability of survival. The adoption of 3-Dimensional (3D) mammography for the medical identification of abnormalities in the breast reduced the number of deaths dramatically. Classification and accurate detection of lumps in the breast in 3D mammography is especially difficult due to factors such as inadequate contrast and normal fluctuations in tissue density. Several Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) solutions are under development to help radiologists accurately classify abnormalities in the breast. In this paper, a breast cancer diagnosis model is implemented to detect breast cancer in cancer patients to prevent death rates. The 3D mammogram images are gathered from the internet. Then, the gathered images are given to the preprocessing phase. The preprocessing is done using a median filter and image scaling method. The purpose of the preprocessing phase is to enhance the quality of the images and remove any noise or artifacts that may interfere with the detection of abnormalities. The median filter helps to smooth out any irregularities in the images, while the image scaling method adjusts the size and resolution of the images for better analysis. Once the preprocessing is complete, the preprocessed image is given to the segmentation phase. The segmentation phase is crucial in medical image analysis as it helps to identify and separate different structures within the image, such as organs or tumors. This process involves dividing the preprocessed image into meaningful regions or segments based on intensity, color, texture, or other features. The segmentation process is done using Adaptive Thresholding with Region Growing Fusion Model (AT-RGFM)". This model combines the advantages of both thresholding and region-growing techniques to accurately identify and delineate specific structures within the image. By utilizing AT-RGFM, the segmentation phase can effectively differentiate between different parts of the image, allowing for more precise analysis and diagnosis. It plays a vital role in the medical image analysis process, providing crucial insights for healthcare professionals. Here, the Modified Garter Snake Optimization Algorithm (MGSOA) is used to optimize the parameters. It helps to optimize parameters for accurately identifying and delineating specific structures within medical images and also helps healthcare professionals in providing more precise analysis and diagnosis, ultimately playing a vital role in the medical image analysis process. MGSOA enhances the segmentation phase by effectively differentiating between different parts of the image, leading to more accurate results. Then, the segmented image is fed into the detection phase. The tumor detection is performed by the Vision Transformer-based Multiscale Adaptive EfficientNetB7 (ViT-MAENB7) model. This model utilizes a combination of advanced algorithms and deep learning techniques to accurately identify and locate tumors within the segmented medical image. By incorporating a multiscale adaptive approach, the ViT-MAENB7 model can analyze the image at various levels of detail, improving the overall accuracy of tumor detection. This crucial step in the medical image analysis process allows healthcare professionals to make more informed decisions regarding patient treatment and care. Here, the created MGSOA algorithm is used to optimize the parameters for enhancing the performance of the model. The suggested breast cancer diagnosis performance is compared to conventional cancer diagnosis models and it showed high accuracy. The accuracy of the developed MGSOA-ViT-MAENB7 is 96.6 %, and others model like RNN, LSTM, EffNet, and ViT-MAENet given the accuracy to be 90.31 %, 92.79 %, 94.46 % and 94.75 %. The developed model's ability to analyze images at multiple scales, combined with the optimization provided by the MGSOA algorithm, results in a highly accurate and efficient system for detecting tumors in medical images. This cutting-edge technology not only improves the accuracy of diagnosis but also helps healthcare professionals tailor treatment plans to individual patients, ultimately leading to better outcomes. By outperforming traditional cancer diagnosis models, the proposed model is revolutionizing the field of medical imaging and setting a new standard for precision and effectiveness in healthcare.

Abstract:TRH stimulation tests (n = 1109) were performed on 1061 ambulatory and 43 hospitalized patients with varying thyroid status, using a TSH immunochemiluminometric assay with third and fourth generation sensitivity characteristics (functional sensitivity, 0.01 and 0.001 mU/L, respectively). TRH test results were analyzed as both absolute (stimulated minus basal TSH) and fold (stimulated/basal TSH) responses. The absolute TRH response varied 8-fold across the physiological TSH range, whereas the mean fold response remained almost constant (mean +/- SEM, 8.5 +/- 0.2). The fold response became progressively attenuated as basal TSH values declined below physiological levels, becoming essentially absent in clinically thyrotoxic patients with markedly depressed basal serum TSH levels (0.007 +/- 0.002 mU/L). Progressive attenuation also occurred at hypothyroid TSH levels; a markedly impaired fold response (2.5 +/- 0.4) was characteristic of primary hypothyroid patients with basal TSH values greater than 50 mU/L. In untreated central hypothyroid patients with near-normal basal TSH levels, the TRH fold response was impaired (1.7 +/- 0.2), whereas in T4-replaced central hypothyroid patients, fold responses were near normal (5.6 +/- 1.2). Neither nonthyroidal illness, age, or sex appeared to influence the pattern of fold TRH response in the populations evaluated. When using third and fourth generation TSH methodology, the TRH-stimulated TSH fold response is more diagnostically useful than the absolute TRH response. However, if patients have an intact hypothalamic-pituitary axis, there appears to be no diagnostic advantage gained by TRH testing over an accurately measured basal TSH value.
Computer-aided colorectal cancer diagnosis: AI-driven image segmentation and classification

Abstract:Colorectal cancer is an enormous health concern since it is among the most lethal types of malignancy. The manual examination has its limitations, including subjectivity and data overload. To overcome these challenges, computer-aided diagnostic systems focusing on image segmentation and abnormality classification have been developed. This study presents a two-stage approach for the automatic detection of five types of colorectal abnormalities in addition to a control group: polyp, low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, serrated adenoma, adenocarcinoma. In the first stage, UNet3+ was used for image segmentation to locate the anomalies, while in the second stage, the Cross-Attention Multi-Scale Vision Transformer deep learning model was used to predict the type of anomaly after highlighting the anomaly on the raw images. In anomaly segmentation, UNet3+ achieved values of 0.9872, 0.9422, 0.9832, and 0.9560 for Dice Coefficient, Jaccard Index, Sensitivity, Specificity respectively. In anomaly detection, the Cross-Attention Multi-Scale Vision Transformer model attained a classification performance of 0.9340, 0.9037, 0.9446, 0.8723, 0.9102, 0.9849 for accuracy, F1 score, precision, recall, Matthews correlation coefficient, and specificity, respectively. The proposed approach proves its capacity to alleviate the overwhelm of pathologists and enhance the accuracy of colorectal cancer diagnosis by achieving high performance in both the identification of anomalies and the segmentation of regions.
MTANet: Multi-Task Attention Network for Automatic Medical Image Segmentation and Classification

Abstract:Medical image segmentation and classification are two of the most key steps in computer-aided clinical diagnosis. The region of interest were usually segmented in a proper manner to extract useful features for further disease classification. However, these methods are computationally complex and time-consuming. In this paper, we proposed a one-stage multi-task attention network (MTANet) which efficiently classifies objects in an image while generating a high-quality segmentation mask for each medical object. A reverse addition attention module was designed in the segmentation task to fusion areas in global map and boundary cues in high-resolution features, and an attention bottleneck module was used in the classification task for image feature and clinical feature fusion. We evaluated the performance of MTANet with CNN-based and transformer-based architectures across three imaging modalities for different tasks: CVC-ClinicDB dataset for polyp segmentation, ISIC-2018 dataset for skin lesion segmentation, and our private ultrasound dataset for liver tumor segmentation and classification. Our proposed model outperformed state-of-the-art models on all three datasets and was superior to all 25 radiologists for liver tumor diagnosis.

Abstract:In Computer vision for microscopy image analysis applications, object segmentation, classification, and structure localization are essential processes for many biological researchers across the globe. The proposed method is significant as it provides automated cancer diagnosis. The manual interpretation of microscopic biopsy for cancer diagnosis is subjective, time-consuming, and dependent on pathologists' interpretations, degree of skill. An automated cancer diagnosis is required to address these constraints. In this work, A deep learning-based architecture, namely enhanced EMD convolution neural networks (EECNNs) for object segmentation is proposed for microscopy images. The multiple IMFs give detailed frequency components of an image for feature extraction. This improves the performance significantly as compared to the previous works of feature extraction. The presented network is utilized for the segmentation of nuclei and cells in microscopy. The network uses multi-resolution deconvolution filters to train at several levels of an input image, it links the intervening layers for improved localization and context and provides the outcome. The additional convolution layers, which skip the max-pooling function, allow the network to train for varying input intensities and object dimensions while making it adaptable to noisy data. Here, we have compared the experimental results of the proposed method on widely accessible data sets which demonstrate that the proposed method provides superior results in terms of Accuracy of 0.9445, Specificity of 0.9256, Sensitivity of 0.9245, MCC of 0.9654, and BCR of 0.9250.

Abstract:Cancer of the breasts is a prevalent and possibly fatal disease that causes abnormal development of cells in breast tissue. It is the most prevalent tumor in women globally, and it has various subtypes that respond differently to treatments. Early detection, such as mammograms, is critical to enhancing outcomes since it allows for prompt intervention. Treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and hormone therapy, either alone or in combination, depending on the features and stage of the cancer. Breast cancer has profound emotional and psychological effects on individuals and their families in addition to its physical effects Ongoing research, public awareness campaigns, and advances in personalized medicine all contribute to the collective efforts aimed at lowering the incidence of breast cancer, improving early detection, and improving the overall quality of life for those affected. By seamlessly integrating state-of-the-art deep learning models: pre-trained ResNet and U-Net, this study pioneers a transformative approach to breast cancer diagnosis. ResNet's expertise in hierarchical feature learning is combined with U-Net's segmentation prowess to focus on digital mammogram-based feature extraction and early-stage identification. The collaborative synergy provides a solid foundation for the accurate detection of breast abnormalities. A neural network is introduced to augment this process for classification, raising diagnostic capabilities to new heights. The combination of pre-trained ResNet and U-Net models creates a dynamic feature extraction pipeline for capturing intricate patterns and segmenting region-specific abnormalities. This collaborative methodology enables the model to detect subtle nuances indicative of early-stage breast cancer, thereby facilitating early detection and intervention. The seamless integration of these models addresses the complexities of mammographic data, providing a complete solution for accurate and nuanced breast cancer detection. A neural network is added to the diagnostic pipeline for more precise classification. The neural network refines the diagnostic process by analyzing the extracted features, reducing false positives, and increasing specificity. This multi-layered approach represents a significant step forward in breast cancer diagnosis, providing a comprehensive tool that integrates feature extraction, early-stage identification, and classification, with the potential to transform clinical practices and improve patient outcomes. Extensive validation and clinical testing validate this transformative model's efficacy and reliability in real-world healthcare scenarios. The responsible use of this transformative tool is supported by ethical considerations such as patient privacy safeguards and adherence to informed consent principles. This study, as a pioneering effort in breast cancer diagnosis, achieves outstanding performance with an accuracy of 99%, precision of 98.6%, recall of 99.01%, and specificity of 98.9%, showcasing superior metrics, lays the groundwork for future innovations, encouraging improved accuracy, personalized treatment strategies, and, ultimately, improved healthcare outcomes for patients.

Abstract:Breast cancer is a prevalent type of cancer that significantly impacts women health and stands as a leading cause of death. In clinical settings, automated breast tumor segmentation is crucial for early-stage diagnosis and treatment planning. Automatic tumor segmentation is complicated by several issues, including variations in tumor form, breast mass size, intensity variances, and a lack of training data. To address these issues, the proposed study emphasizes on multiscale feature extraction and transfer learning-based approach, utilizing past experiences from a source domain to improve the encoder design in the target domain. The multiscale feature fusion encoder yields precise location specific maps, successfully handling irregular shapes and sizes. Furthermore, the lightweight upsampling decoder enhances accurate restoration of tumor specific information. The inclusion of a sidewise deep supervision enhances breast lesion segmentation and facilitates easier localization in ultrasound images. Additionally, the utilization of a two-phase transfer learning and ensemble segmentation approach improves the quality of the segmentation map. Extensive experiments highlight the superiority of proposed model over state-of-the-art methods on three publicly available datasets. By utilizing publicly available databases, this work improves analytical perspectives on tumor types, methodologies and offers insightful information for the future research. The proposed system reached superior performance with dice score of 88.59% on BUSI and 92.11% on UDAIT dataset with outstanding tumor detection performance. Compared to previous deep learning models, this method reduces overfitting and greatly enhances generalization on smaller datasets. The identification of small tumor sizes, which is essential for early-stage diagnosis, is maximized by the proposed approach. This study enables precise segmentation of diverse tumor shapes and sizes, making it clinically useful for early-stage tumor diagnosis.

Abstract:Rectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging has become a vital tool in diagnosing and treating patients with rectal cancer. Notably, early diagnosis of rectal cancer can help improve patient survival rate; however, the clinical expertise of physicians is a limiting factor. Therefore, we propose an attention-based multiscale densely connected convolutional neural network based on an attention mechanism to improve the accuracy of diagnosis by automatically segmenting rectal tumors from two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance images (MRI) using computer-aided diagnostic techniques. First, to address the inability of U-Net (a classical segmentation network for medical images) and extract rich semantic features and the inconsistent shape and size of tumors between different patients, we replace the conventional convolutional blocks in the U-Net network with multiscale densely connected convolutional blocks. Second, to make the network focus better on global contextual information, we add central blocks with atrous convolution in the final coding layer or the last coding layer. Finally, we add a hybrid attention mechanism to each decoder module to help the model focus on the features of the rectal tumor region. We validated the effectiveness of the proposed method using 3773 2D MRI datasets from 572 patients. The sensitivity, specificity, Dice correlation coefficient, and Hausdorff distance of MRI rectal tumor segmentation were 85.47%, 86.35%, 94.71%, and 7.88mm, respectively. The results showed that the proposed method outperforms conventional approaches. Moreover, the proposed method has better segmentation results in the rectal tumor segmentation task and can provide physicians with the second-most important clinical diagnostic opinion.

Abstract:Colon image analysis is an important step in diagnosing colon cancer, and achieving automated and accurate segmentation remains a challenging problem because of the diversity of cell shapes and boundaries in pathological sections. In this paper, we propose a U-shaped colon cancer segmentation network , which combines depth-separable convolution and morphological methods to reduce the number of model parameters and effectively improve segmentation accuracy. We improve the global and local feature capabilities by taking advantage of serial convolution and external focus as the underlying architecture for the model. We designed the skip connection to fuse the features from the encoder in a morphological way to enhance the morphological features. We introduced an edge enhancement module by extracting contour information using morphological methods to enhance edge features. We evaluated the proposed method on three colon cancer datasets, and the experimental results showed that our method with a small number of parameters has a Dice coefficient of 92.76% ± 5.86% on the Glas dataset, 86.11% ± 7.11% on the CoCaHis dataset, and 91.61% ± 11.25% on the Colon dataset. Abstract:Colon cancer (CC) is a leading cause of mortality rate across worldwide. Early diagnosis of colon cancer prolongs human life and is also helpful in preventing the disease. Histopathological inspection is a frequently used technique to detect and diagnose it. Visual inspection of histopathological analysis needs more inspection time and the decision is based on clinicians’ subjective perceptions. Typically, machine learning techniques depend on conventional feature extraction which is time-consuming and laborious, and may not be suitable for a large amount of data. This work proposed a lightweight multi-headed convolutional neural network (MHCNN) for the classification of colon tissue using histopathological images. Authors have employed the first-time Tikhonov-based unsharp masking on colon tissue histopathological images. Tikhonov-based unsharp masking is used to highlight the high-frequency details (such as edges, corners, contours, etc.) of histopathological images. Then, the obtained unsharp mask-based histopathological images are given as input to the proposed MHCNN. Further, quantized aware training is applied to the proposed model to reduce the model size for efficient storage and speed up the training and testing time while maintaining high accuracy. The effectiveness of the developed model is compared with the other existing state-of-the-art methods. The proposed MHCNN achieved an average classification accuracy of 96.62%, precision of 97.48%, specificity of 97.46%, f1 score of 0.9664, and area under the curve of 0.9828. The quantized accuracy of 96.10% is achieved by the proposed network. Clinicians may install the developed network to validate the diagnosis in the hospitals.
