Abstract:Although groundwater is the primary drinking water source in northern of China, little is known about generation mechanisms and related health risks of high fluoride groundwater at the geomorphic transition zones. Thus, 419 groundwater samples were collected from Zhangjiakou region, where is a typically geomorphic transition zone of the North China Plain and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, to conduct the hydrochemical analysis, geochemical modeling, multivariate statistical analysis, and health risks assessment. From the results, F− concentration in groundwater had a range of 0.05–9.71 mg L−1. About 37.1% and 26.2% of groundwater samples from Bashang region (BSR) and Baxia region (BXR), respectively, were over the 1.50 mg L−1, which were mainly distributed in the groundwater flow retardation area and/or evaporation discharge area. Thermodynamic simulations demonstrated that F-bearing minerals dissolution and Ca2+/Mg2+ removal via calcite/dolomite precipitation primarily governed high-F- groundwater formation in the whole study area. Competitive adsorption, evaporation, evaporites dissolution and salt-effect also affected F− enrichment in BSR. Desorption in alkaline environment, ion exchange and human activities played a vital role in F− enrichment at BXR. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that the origin of F− contamination was geogenic in BSR; whereas, it was geogenic and anthropogenic in BXR. Besides, more than 71.8%, 51.0%, 36.1% and 25.5% of the study area exceeded the acceptable level (health index>1) for infants, children, adult males, and females, respectively. The health risks for different groups of people varied significantly and ranked: infants > children > males > females, suggesting that younger people were more susceptible to fluoride contamination. Meanwhile, females were more resistant to fluoride contamination than males. These findings are vital to providing insights on high-F- groundwater formation, investigate the situation of health risks, and conduct the integrated management for high fluoride groundwater in geomorphic transition zones at northern China.

Abstract:Abstract This article took fluoride in shallow groundwater of a township in southwestern China as the research object. Fifty sampling points were set up in the studied area. The fluoride was tested by the ion-selective electrode method. The health risk model recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency was used. Based on the Chinese population, human health risk assessment was performed for fluoride in shallow groundwater in the studied area, and the Kriging interpolation method was used to simulate the spatial distribution of fluoride concentration in the area. The research showed the following. (1) The concentration of fluoride in the shallow groundwater samples in the studied area was 0.06–0.78 mg/L, with an average value of 0.35 mg/L, which was in line with the limit value (1.00 mg/L) in the standards for drinking water quality (GB 5749–2006), but its maximum value was 0.78 mg/L, which was 1.86 times of the background value. (2) The average hazard index of children and adults were 0.27 and 0.15, respectively, which were less than 1, and the risk was at an acceptable level; the noncarcinogenic risk of children was 1.8 times that of adults; the average values of total risk quotient for groundwater fluoride intake by children and adults were 0.27 and 0.15, respectively, and 1.19E-03 and 7.26E-04 by skin, respectively. This indicated that of the two routes, oral intake was the main route of exposure to fluoride. The noncarcinogenic risk values of fluoride in rural and urban areas were similar, and both were less than 1. (3) The high-value areas of fluoride were mainly concentrated in the southeast of the area, which was mainly affected by the superposition of natural factors and industrial park sewage discharge. Through human health risk assessment and spatial distribution of fluoride in regional groundwater, it can provide a theoretical basis for regional groundwater pollution prevention.
Spatial evolution analysis of groundwater chemistry, quality, and fluoride health risk in southern Hebei Plain, China

Abstract:The present study investigated ion and fluoride concentrations in groundwater and their associated health risks to local populations in the southern Hebei Plain during 2018-2020. A total of 336 groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells at 112 different locations. Statistical analysis, Gibbs diagram, principal ion ratio, and saturation index were carried out to clarify the chemical characteristics and control mechanism of groundwater. The results indicated that the groundwater types in the study area were mainly HCO3-Ca, Cl-Na, and SO4-Ca. The concentrations of cations and anions were Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ and HCO3- > SO42- > Cl- > NO3- > F-, respectively. Based on the water chemical parameters, the pollution index of groundwater (PIG) was used to comprehensively evaluate the water quality. The results showed that during the study period, 60.41% of groundwater samples were suitable for drinking purposes, and 39.59% needed purification treatment to meet the requirements of drinking water standards. The groundwater quality in the western pre-hill plain areas was good, while the water quality in the northeastern and southeastern areas was poor and contaminated to varying degrees. Groundwater quality was mainly affected by the combined effect of total dissolved solids (TDS), Na+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42- and HCO3- concentrations. Fluoride concentrations in the groundwater samples ranged from 0.07 to 8.51 mg/L, with 44% of the samples containing fluoride below the recommended limit of 0.5 mg/L, which would put the population at risk of dental caries. Also, 8% of the samples exceeded the permissible limit for fluoride in drinking water (1.5 mg/L), which would expose the local population to the risk of fluorosis. The human health risk evaluation of fluoride showed significant differences in non-carcinogenic effects between two different groups of children and adults. HIin values ranged from 0.08 to 10.19 for children and 0.03 to 4.65 for adults, with hazard indices greater than 1 at 29.16% and 10.11%, respectively. This indicates that children have a greater exposure risk than adults, and the entropy of higher risk is mainly distributed in the northeast of the study area. Based on the above analysis of the spatial evolution of groundwater chemistry, water quality, and fluoride health risks in the southern Hebei Plain region, corresponding protection and management measures were proposed, which also provided reference significance for the effective use of drinking water and health risk prevention in the region.

Abstract:Groundwater is the main water supply source especially in arid/semiarid regions, whose quality has been widely concerned. To clarify the spatial distribution, occurrence and the impacts of fluoride (F − ) and nitrate (NO 3 − ) in groundwater, 26 groundwater samples were collected from domestic water wells and agricultural irrigation wells in Xilinhot city, a famous tourist city on the Xilin Gol grassland of China. The integration of statistical analysis and hydrochemical diagrams and the model of health risk assessment recommended by the USEPA were carried out in the study. The analysis reveals that the groundwater is weakly alkaline, and the hydrochemical facies are mainly HCO 3 ‐Ca·Mg and SO 4 ·Cl‐ Na + K, which are controlled by natural processes and anthropogenic factors in the study area. Groundwater with high fluorine is chiefly located in the west of the study area, and high‐nitrate groundwater is chiefly located in the middle and southern parts of the study area. Fluoride in groundwater is predominantly derived by the weathering and dissolution of fluoride‐bearing minerals and ion exchange. The values of hazard index (HI) of 65.38% groundwater samples were greater than the recommended limit for noncarcinogenic risk (HI = 1) for children, followed by 38.46% for adult females and 30.77% for adult males. The water quality of the urban water supply should be treated. At the same time, contaminant filters and other instruments should be supplied to residents in pastoral area to reduce fluoride and nitrate concentration in drinking water, which will mitigate health risks and ensure the safety of drinking water in the study area.

Abstract:Fluoride (F−) enrichment reduces the availability of groundwater resources in the arid region, and it is thus important to investigate the hydrogeochemistry and health hazards of fluoride-enriched groundwater. Seventy-two groundwater samples (20 unconfined samples from the piedmont plain, 22 unconfined samples and 30 shallow confined samples from the alluvial plain) were collected in the Tarim Basin of China to illustrate the geochemical processes driving the F− enrichment and the incidence of dental fluorosis. The patterns of average ions contents in groundwater are Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ and SO42− > Cl− > HCO3− > NO3− > F−. The highest F− concentration (average 2.16 mg/L) is observed in unconfined groundwater in the alluvial plain, while the lowest (average 0.63 mg/L) is recorded in unconfined groundwater in the piedmont plain. Approximately 5.0% of unconfined groundwater in the piedmont plain, 90.9% of unconfined groundwater and 33.3% of shallow confined groundwater in the alluvial plain contain F− concentrations exceeding 1.0 mg/L (Chinese drinking water standard). Mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation play a significant role in the formation of solutes in groundwater. High-F- groundwater is mostly associated with SO4·Cl–Na·Ca, SO4·Cl–Na·Mg, and SO4·Cl–Na types water. Thermodynamic simulations reveal that the dissolution of F-bearing minerals (e.g., fluorite) significantly controls the F− contents in groundwater. High concentrations of F− are closely related to high HCO3−, high Na+, high salinity, cation exchange, and evaporation. This demonstrates that high F− concentrations are caused by the increase in fluorite solubility due to high ionic strength, Ca2+ consumption and the desorption of F− from solid surfaces under alkaline conditions. Mixing with the upper unconfined groundwater plays a vital role in the enrichment of F− in shallow confined groundwater in the alluvial plain. The health risk assessment based on Dean's classification indicates that the percentage prevalence of fluorosis for boys aged 6 to 18 is 15.5% for Yecheng (YC), 18.4% for Zepu (ZP), 33.3% for Shache (SC), 29.8% for Maigaiti (MG), and 44.9% for Bachu (BC), while that for girls of the same age is 14.3% for YC, 24.3% for ZP, 42.2% for SC, 41.4% for MG, and 45.3% for BC. For male and female adults aged between 19 and 68, the percentage prevalence of fluorosis is: YC (11.5%, 12.0%), ZP (18.3%, 20.0%), SC (35.4%, 35.0%), MG (32.5%, 39.7%), and BC (42.4%, 44.3%). It is obvious that younger generation, especially girls, suffers from more severe dental fluorosis. This study has implications for the effective management of high-F- groundwater in arid regions.

Abstract:The crux of groundwater protection lies in a profound understanding of the sources of pollutants and their impacts on human health. This study selected 47 groundwater samples from the Fengshui mining area in central Shandong Province, China, employing advanced hydrogeochemical techniques, positive matrix factorization (PMF), and Monte Carlo analysis methods, aimed at unveiling the characteristics, origins, and health risks of water pollutants. The results indicated that the majority of samples exhibited a slightly alkaline nature. Notably, the concentrations of fluoride (F − ) and nitrate (NO 3 − ) exceeded China's safety standards in 40.43% and 23.40% of the samples, respectively. Moreover, a water quality index (WQI) below 50 was observed in approximately 68.09% of the sites, suggesting that the water quality in these areas generally met acceptable levels. However, regions with higher WQI values were predominantly located in the northern and southern parts of the mining area. PMF analysis revealed that regional geological and industrial activities were the primary factors affecting water quality, followed by mining discharges, fundamental geological and agricultural processes, and leachate enrichment activities. The health risk assessment highlighted the heightened sensitivity of the youth demographic to fluoride, with a more pronounced non-carcinogenic risk compared to nitrate, affecting about 31.89% of the youth population. Hence, it is imperative for local authorities and relevant departments to take prompt actions to remediate groundwater contamination to minimize public health risks.

Abstract:Fluoride enrichment (> 1.5 mg/L) in groundwater has become a global threat, particularly given the hazards to human health. This study collected 58 unconfined groundwater samples from Fengpei Plain in June 2022 for hydrochemical and stable isotope analyses combined with multiple methods to explore sources, influencing factors, and potential health hazards of groundwater F − . The results showed that groundwater F − concentration ranged from 0.08 to 8.14 mg/L, with an average of 1.91 mg/L; over 41.4% of them exceeded the acceptable level of 1.5 mg/L prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The dominant hydrochemical facies changed from Ca·Mg-HCO 3 and Ca·Mg-SO 4 ·Cl type in low-F – groundwater to Na-HCO 3 and Na-SO 4 ·Cl water types in high-F – groundwater. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and ionic correlation analysis indicated that F − is positively correlated to pH, EC, Na + , K + , SO 4 2− , and TDS, but negatively to Ca 2+ and δ 18 O. Groundwater F − accumulation was primarily driven by F − -bearing minerals dissolution such as fluorite. Simultaneously, the carbonates precipitation, positive cation exchange processes, and salt effect were conducive to groundwater F − enrichment. However, competitive adsorption between OH − /HCO 3 − and F − , evaporation, and anthropogenic activities only had a weak effect on the F − enrichment in groundwater. The hazard quotient (HQ) assessment results show that 67.2% of groundwater samples pose a non-carcinogenic risk (HQ > 1) for infants, followed by 53.4% for children, 32.8% for females, and 25.9% for males. The Monte Carlo simulation results agreed with those of the deterministic model that minors are more susceptible than adults. These findings are vital to providing insights into the geochemical behavior, driving factors, and drinking water safety of high-F − groundwater worldwide.

Abstract:Identification of geochemical factors controlling the formation of fluoride and quantifying exposure risks associated with fluoride in groundwater is important for drinking water resource protection and public health. In the present study, 129 groundwater samples [89 from a shallow aquifer (SG) and 40 from a deep aquifer (DG)] were collected from a drinking water resource in the North Anhui Plain in eastern China. Hydrogeochemical methods, mineral saturation indices, and a human health risk assessment model were used to determine the formation mechanism and noncarcinogenic risks of fluoride in groundwater. The results indicate that fluoride concentrations in 10.1% and 2.5% of the SG and DG samples, respectively, exceeded the Chinese groundwater quality standard. Concentrations of fluoride were higher in Na–HCO 3 and Mg–HCO 3 type water than in Ca–HCO 3 type water. Ca 2+ /Na + versus HCO 3 − /Na + and Mg 2+ /Na + diagrams suggest that weathering of silicate minerals is a key factor controlling groundwater chemistry and fluoride concentrations. Relationships between F − and F − /Cl − , pH and Ca 2+ indicate that geologic sources are an important source of groundwater fluoride and that direct cation exchange and competitive adsorption in alkaline environments favor F − enrichment. A saturation index analysis demonstrated that calcite and dolomite were saturated, while fluorite and gypsum could be further dissolved. Noncarcinogenic risks to adults associated with fluoride in groundwater were low. However, 21.3% and 35% of the SG and DG samples, respectively, presented unacceptable noncarcinogenic risks for children. High-risk areas were identified in the central, northern and southern portions of the study area. Our findings suggest that groundwater quality management and control measures should be implemented to protect the health of the local population, particularly children, in high-risk areas.

Abstract:Abstract Assessing groundwater quality is critical to regional water resource conservation and human health safety, especially in areas with co-existence of toxic constituents fluoride (F − ) and arsenic (As). In this study, fourteen groundwater samples were collected in Feng County, Northwestern Jiangsu Province to identify dominant contaminants and their spatial distribution and health risk. The composition and variation characteristics of major ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , and NO 3 − ) and trace elements (F − , As, and Mn) were analyzed. The hydrochemical results revealed that high F − groundwater was mainly distributed in the northern areas whereas As-riched groundwater was primarily distributed in southern areas. Notably, over 85.7% and 21.4% of the shallow groundwater samples exceeded the drinking water quality standard of 1.5 mg/L for F − and 10 μg/L for As, respectively. Based on the water quality index (WQI) appraisal result, 71.4% of the groundwater in the study area is classified as “poor”, and thus unsuitable for drinking directly. We assessed the human non-carcinogenic health risk of F − (HQ Fluoride ) and As (HQ Arsenic ) and the carcinogenic health risk of As (CR Arsenic ). The calculated hazard quotient (HQ) for F − indicated nearly all groundwater samples have an unacceptable risk (HQ > 1) for each age group. However, HQ Arsenic values revealed that 28.6%, 21.4%, 21.4%, and 21.4% of groundwater samples posed potential non-carcinogenic health risks for infants, children, females, and males, respectively. The calculated results of CR Arsenic showed that 0%, 21.4%, 28.6%, and 28.6% of groundwater samples posed unacceptable health risks (CR > 1.0 × 10 −4 ) to infants, children, females, and males, respectively. The groundwater irrigation suitability assessment results showed that 21.4% of samples were doubtful to unsuitable for irrigation, and 85.7% owed magnesium hazards. The findings of this study will assist policymakers in formulating proper remedial policies and mitigation strategies to ensure the safety of drinking and irrigation water.

Abstract:c exposure to geogenic fluoride and arsenic iChronic exposure to geogenic fluoride and arsenic in groundwater has a deleterious influence on the health of billions of people globally. The health status of residents impacted by connected diseases is urgently needed. A twelve-year study was carried out to identify the spatial distribution pattern of high fluoride/arsenic groundwater in an arid/semi-arid area and to estimate the population exposed to related disease. A geostatistical interpolation method and a disease inversion model were used. The results indicated that fluoride/arsenic-rich groundwater primarily accumulated in basins of Shanxi Province. Groundwater fluoride exposure provided a health concern to 3.16 million persons (9.08 % of the population), including 2.50 million children at risk of dental caries. Exposure to groundwater arsenic caused a health risk to 4.38 million inhabitants (12.58 % of total), with 1.92 million at risk of lung cancer, 1.87 million at risk of bladder cancer, and 0.29 million at risk of skin cancer, respectively. The pollution and impact of groundwater fluoride and arsenic vary greatly among residents in different environments, and accurate assessment of the affected population is of great significance for residents' health and water quality management. Our research study complements the critical data on the disease risks associated with geogenic-contaminated groundwater and provides scientific basis of water quality management for policy makers.

Abstract:High-F groundwater has caused serious human health problems worldwide. In this paper, a typical saline-fresh water mixing zone (SFMZ) in a coastal plain (south of Laizhou Bay, China) was chosen as an example to analyze and summarize the distribution characteristics and enrichment mechanism human health risks of high-fluorine groundwater. Thirty-two groundwater samples have F - concentrations that exceed the drinking water guideline value of the World Health Organization (WHO; 1.5 mg/L), Thirty-two groundwater samples exceeded the drinking water guideline value of the WHO (1.5 mg/L) and 43 groundwater samples exceeded the National Sanitary Standard for drinking water of China (1.0 mg/L), accounting for 68.1 and 91.5% of the total groundwater samples. The groundwater quality is relatively poor in this study area, and the water is unsuitable for human consumption. High-F groundwater is mainly found in the central and northern parts of the study area, and the concentrations increase in the direction of water flow. According to the analysis, the groundwater environment, saline water intrusion (SWI), evaporation and cation exchange are the main factors influencing the enrichment of F in the SFMZ. The neutral and weakly alkaline environment is conducive to the enrichment of F - . Cation exchange and evaporation are the most important factors in the enrichment of F. Human activity is not the main source of groundwater F. Na + and HCO 3 − are adequately abundant in the groundwater environment in the study area, creating conditions that are conducive to the dissolution of fluorite and the release of F into the groundwater. An increase in the Na + concentration and a decrease in the Ca 2+ concentration can promote further dissolution of fluorite and other F-containing minerals, thereby releasing F - into the groundwater. Fluorite dissolution is prevalent in the groundwater environment, which can lead to an increase in the F concentration. This study is helpful to the development of strategies for the integrated management of high-F groundwater in coastal plains. The health risk assessment shows that long-term exposure to high-F groundwater can pose a great threat to four age clusters, especially for children and infants. The HQ values for shallow groundwater range from 0.32 to 2.89, 0.39 to 3.61, 0.56 to 5.11, and 0.42 to 3.85 for adults, teenagers, children and infants, respectively. The groundwater in this study area is not for irrigation and animal husbandry, which may indirectly affect human health.

Abstract:Native high fluoride (F − ) groundwater is one of the most serious environmental problems facing China and even the international society, which seriously threatens human health. The confined aquifer in the Guide basin contains high concentrations of F- and is subject to multifaceted influences, stemming not only from the geothermal activity present at the basin's bedrock but also from distinctive attributes such as elevated alkalinity, significant burial depths, and limited water circulation. Consequently, the precise mechanisms governing the enrichment of F − within the groundwater in this confined aquifer remain inadequately understood. This study aims to elucidate the migration and enrichment mechanism of F − in aquifers and assess the relative contributions of different control mechanisms responsible for high F − groundwater through systematic sampling, analysis and statistical calculations. Chemical types of confined groundwater and unconfined groundwater are Na-HCO 3 -Cl and Ca-HCO 3 , respectively. High-F − groundwater mainly exists in confined aquifers, and the content of F − gradually increases along the flow path. High content of HCO 3 − in confined groundwater promotes the precipitation of Ca 2+ , then enhances the dissolution of F − -containing minerals, resulting in F − being continuously released into groundwater. High pH, high Na/Ca molar ratios, geothermal and long residence time of groundwater are the additional factors to accelerate the release and migration of F − in groundwater. Results of redundancy analysis showed that competitive adsorption is the primary mechanism for F − enrichment in confined groundwater, followed by the geothermal effect, precipitation of carbonate minerals and residence time of groundwater time. The results of potential health risk assessment indicate that the potential health risks associated with confined groundwater are notably higher across all age groups compared to unconfined groundwater. The research results are not only helpful for the local government in reducing the threat of drinking-water fluorosis, but also provide a reference for other high-F − groundwater research with similar geological conditions in China and around the world.

[Distribution Characteristics and Source of Fluoride in Groundwater in Lower Plain Area of North China Plain: A Case Study in Nanpi County]

Abstract:There is an obvious regional contradiction between water resources and agricultural produce in lower plain area of North China, however, excessive fluorine in deep groundwater further limits the use of regional water resources. In order to understand the spatial distribution characteristics and source of F(-) in groundwater, study was carried out in Nanpi County by field survey and sampling, hydrogeochemical analysis and stable isotopes methods. The results showed that the center of low fluoride concentrations of shallow groundwater was located around reservoir of Dalang Lake, and centers of high fluoride concentrations were located in southeast and southwest of the study area. The region with high fluoride concentration was consistent with the over-exploitation region of deep groundwater. Point source pollution of subsurface drainage and non-point source of irrigation with deep groundwater in some regions were the main causes for the increasing F(-) concentrations of shallow groundwater in parts of the sampling sites. Rock deposition and hydrogeology conditions were the main causes for the high F(-) concentrations (1.00 mg x L(-1), threshold of drinking water quality standard in China) in deep groundwater. F(-) released from clay minerals into the water increased the F(-) concentrations in deep groundwater because of over-exploitation. With the increasing exploitation and utilization of brackish shallow groundwater and the compressing and restricting of deep groundwater exploitation, the water environment in the middle and east lower plain area of North China will undergo significant change, and it is important to identify the distribution and source of F(-) in surface water and groundwater for reasonable development and use of water resources in future.

Abstract:Hundreds of millions of people around the world are currently exposed to excessive amounts of fluoride (F-) in drinking water. Although the factors controlling the spatiotemporal distribution of F- contents have been analyzed, their contributions have rarely been quantified. In this study, 510 water samples were collected in the dry and wet seasons in China's Loess Plateau to investigate the spatial and seasonal distribution, controlling factors, and potential health risks of F- in natural water. High-F- waters were mainly distributed in valley areas of the Loess Plateau, and more severe fluoride pollution of streamwater and groundwater was found in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Mineral dissolution, competitive adsorption, adsorption/desorption and cation exchange jointly controlled F- enrichment. Spatiotemporal distribution of high-F- levels was mainly determined by climate and streamwater-groundwater connectivity in the dry season, with contribution rates of 41.7% and 37.6%, and by terrain and anthropogenic activities in the wet season, with contribution rates and 49.9–55.6% and 30.7%, respectively. Fluoride in groundwater through oral intake posed the greatest health risks to infants, followed by children, teenagers and adults in the dry and wet seasons. This study provides a scientific basis for the effective management of high-F- water in arid regions.

Abstract:High-fluoride groundwater is a major challenge to safe groundwater supply for global community. This study emphasized on the high-fluoride phreatic groundwater in the lower flood plain of Yellow River. A total of 86 phreatic groundwaters were sampled to elucidate the hydrochemistry, sources and driving forces of high-fluoride groundwater, and associated health hazards. Results indicate phreatic groundwaters in the study area are all slightly alkaline with TDS in a large variation of 559–4271 mg/L. High-fluoride groundwater is widespread in the study area with ~ 70% of groundwaters exceeding the Chinese drinking water permissible limit of 1 mg/L, and characterized by hydrochemical faces of HCO3− and Na+. Groundwater fluoride originates predominantly from the geogenic sources of fluorite dissolution and silicates weathering. Its release is retrained by the gypsum dissolution but stimulated by the precipitation of calcite, aragonite and dolomite. Groundwater fluoride enrichment is also facilitated by the alkaline condition, competitive adsorption of HCO3−, cation exchange process. The excessive fluoride in groundwater can pose non-carcinogenic risk to all populations at more than 50% of sampling sites via drinking water pathway, but mostly the medium risk category. Infants were more susceptible with 15.12% of groundwaters demonstrated high health risk. The high health risk to other populations is limited. Differential water supply and defluorination are recommended to effectively utilize groundwater resource and safeguard residents’ health.

Abstract:Endemic fluorosis was investigated and studied in the west region of the Songnen plain, Northeast China in 2001–2002. The results showed that the fluorine distribution in aquatic environment was that the fluorine concentrations in the lake water and unconfined ground water were higher than that in the river water and confined ground water. The lake water (Alkali lake) is connected with unconfined ground water. In unconfined ground water, from the east and southeast areas to the west and the northwest areas of the plain, fluorine concentration fluctuated with high and low alternatively. The fluorine in the water comes from the weathering of rocks and minerals in the mountains and hills around the Songnen Plain. The main influence factors of the fluorine distribution in aquatic environment are discussed. Unconfined ground water containing high fluorine is used as drinking water. In this region, the fluorine concentration in drinking water is evidently correlated to the morbidity of dental and skeletal fluorosis. High fluorine concentration in drinking water has endangered human health.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current situation of endemic fluorosis associated with drinking water in Shaanxi province in 2008, providing prevention and control work with scientific evidence. Methods According to data of drinking water endemic fluorosis in Shaanxi, 15 counties in Yulin, Weinan and Xianyang city were divided into mild, moderate and severe diseased areas according to fuoride level in the drinking water or the fluorosis severity, and 12,39,45 endemic fluorosis villages were selected respectively from each area. Dental fluorosis for all the children aged 8 - 12 years old and clinical skeletal fluorosis for the people over the age of 16 were examined. In mild, moderate and severe areas, 30% of the survey villages received X-ray to examine skeletal fuorosis. Five water samples were collected from villages with unimproved water respectively from the east, the west, the south, the north, the middle; if there was less than 5 that could be sampled, then all were collected, moreover 3 peripheral and 1 central water samples were collected from villages with improved water. Also in mild, moderate and severe illness areas, 50% of the surveyed villages were selected; in each village, 30 urine samples of the children aged 8 - 12 were collected, 6 portions in each age group. If Less than 30 children in all the age groups or less than 6 in each age group, all their urine samples were collected to determine fluoride. Results Totally 3652 children aged 8 - 12 years old were examined and 1930 cases of dental fluorosis were diagnosed, the rate was 52.85% and the index was 1.22. The rates in Dinghian, Jingbian and Pucheng village were higher, being 90.43% (170/188) ,82.89%(126/152),80.65% (325/403) respectively. A total of 40 543 adults over the age of 16 were examined and 5935 cases of skeletal fluorosis were diagnosed, in a rate of 14.64%. The rates of the mild, moderate, severe skeletal fluorosis were respectively 9.17%(3717/40 543),4.36%(1769/40 543),1.11%(449/40 543).All 706 adults were taken X-ray films.and 280 cases of positive change were diagnosed,the positive rate was 39.66%. The rates of the mild,moderate,severe change were respectively 17.28%(122/706),17.00%(120/706),5.38%(38/706).All 427 water samples were collected,the fluoride content waS(2.22±1.41)ms/L,and the abnormal rate was 85.01%(363/427).All 1393 portions of urine sample were collected in children and the median of fuoride was 2.37 mg/L Conclusions The endemic fluorosis associated with drinking water is still comparatively serious in Shaanxi.The preventive measures for improving water must be improved.

Abstract:The west plain region of Jilin province of northeast China is one of the typical endemic fluorosis areas caused by drinking water for many years. Investigations of hydrogeological and eco-environmental conditions as well as endemic fluorosis were conducted in 1998. Results show that the ground water, especially, the water in the unconfined aquifer is the main source of drinking water for local residents. The fluoride concentration in groundwater in the unconfined aquifers is higher than that in the confined aquifer in the west plain of Jilin province. The fluoride concentration in the unconfined aquifer can be used to classify the plain into fluoride deficient area, optimum area and excess area, which trend from west to east. High fluoride (>1.0 mg L −1 ) in drinking water resulted in dental and skeletal fluorosis in local residents (children and pregnant women). There exists a positive correlation between fluoride concentration in the drinking water and the morbidities of endemic fluorosis disease ( r 1 = 0.781, r 2 = 0.872). Health risks associated with fluoride concentration in drinking water are assessed. It has been determined that fluoride concentration in excess of 1.0 mg L −1 exposes residents to high health risks based on risk identification. The study area is classified into five health risk classes as shown in Figure 4. The risk indexes of this area more than 1.0 are accounted for 68% of the total west plain region.

Abstract:In this study, the groundwater (GW) in the high-fluorine area of the Southwestern Shandong Plain was divided according to the characteristics of high Na% (> 75%), and its water chemistry characteristics and causes were discussed separately, and the hydrochemical process of the formation of high-fluorine GW was determined. Finally, the GW quality of the study area was evaluated. The results proved that silicate hydrolysis can significantly promote the release of F− in fluorine-containing minerals; high %Na can be used as one of the early-warning conditions for judging high-fluoride areas. To this end, 132 GW samples were collected from 66 wells during the dry and wet seasons. The study area was found to have weakly alkaline GW (pH 7.1–8.9) and could be divided into high %Na areas (HNA) and non-HNA. GW exhibited different hydrochemical characteristics between HNA and non-HNA. In non-HNA, total hardness (TH) exceeded 200 mg/L, and total dissolved solids (TDS) ranged from 514.1 to 5246.1 mg/L; in HNA, TH was less than 200 mg/L, TDS ranged from 552.8 to 1298.3 mg/L, and Na+ increased with TDS, whereas Ca2+ and Mg2+ contents were low. The main water type in HNA was HCO3-Na and in non-HNA was SO4·Cl-Ca·Mg and SO4·Cl-Na. The study area is experiencing serious fluoride pollution. GW in HNA is mostly controlled by carbonate and silicate hydrolysis and evaporation, whereas GW in non-HNA is controlled by dolomite dissolution and cation exchange in the main. Moreover, GW in HNA has significantly been altered by albite hydrolysis, which produces Na+ and HCO3− and triggers various reactions promoting the release of F− from fluorine-containing minerals (FCM). Regarding the water quality for irrigation, GW in HNA was found to be less suitable than that in non-HNA. Nevertheless, in terms of the water quality index (WQI), GW is moderate for drinking and poor for irrigation. Therefore, extensive attention should be paid to the exploitation and management of high-sodium GW in the plain area.
