Abstract:Motivated by the recent observations of various exotic quantum states in the equilateral triangular-lattice phosphates Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ with $J\rm_{eff}$ = 1/2 and Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$ with $S$ = 1, the magnetic properties of spin-5/2 antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaMn(PO$_4$)$_2$, their classical counterpart, are comprehensively investigated experimentally. DC magnetization and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples indicate two successive magnetic transitions at $T\rm_{N1}$ $\approx$ 1.13 K and $T\rm_{N2}$ $\approx$ 1.28 K, respectively. Zero-field neutron powder diffraction measurement at 67 mK reveals a Y-like spin configuration as its ground-state magnetic structure, with both the $ab$-plane and $c$-axis components of the Mn$^{2+}$ moments long-range ordered. The incommensurate magnetic propagation vector $k$ shows a dramatic change for the intermediate phase between $T\rm_{N1}$ and $T\rm_{N2}$, in which the spin state is speculated to change into a collinear structure with only the $c$-axis moments ordered, as stabilized by thermal fluctuations. The successive magnetic transitions observed in Na$_2$BaMn(PO$_4$)$_2$ are in line with the expectation for a triangle-lattice antiferromagnet with an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:A new frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na2BaNi(PO4)2 was synthesized by high temperature flux method. The two-dimensional triangular lattice is formed by the Ni2+ ions with S = 1. Its magnetism is highly anisotropic with the Weiss constants θ CW = –6.615 K (H ⊥ c) and –43.979 K (H ∥ c). However, no magnetic ordering is present down to 0.3 K, reflecting strong geometric spin frustration. Our heat capacity measurements show substantial residual magnetic entropy existing below 0.3 K at zero field, implying the presence of low energy spin excitations. These results indicate that Na2BaNi(PO4)2 is a potential spin liquid candidate with spin-1.

Abstract:An interplay of geometrical frustration and strong quantum fluctuations in a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TAF) can lead to exotic quantum states. Here, we report the neutron-scattering, magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric studies of the recently discovered spin-1/2 TAF Na 2 BaCo(PO 4 ) 2 , which can be described by a spin-1/2 easy axis XXZ model. The zero-field neutron diffraction experiment reveals an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground state with a significantly reduced ordered moment of about 0.54(2) μ B /Co. Different magnetic phase diagrams with magnetic fields in the a b plane and along the easy c -axis were extracted based on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and elastic neutron-scattering results. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) spin dispersion in the triangular plane was observed in the high-field polarized state, and microscopic exchange parameters of the spin Hamiltonian have been determined through the linear spin wave theory. Consistently, quantum critical behaviors with the universality class of d = 2 and ν z = 1 were established in the vicinity of the saturation field, where a Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of diluted magnons occurs. The newly discovered quantum criticality and fractional magnetization phase in this ideal spin-1/2 TAF present exciting opportunities for exploring exotic quantum phenomena.

Abstract:The recent discovery of the spin supersolid candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ stimulates numerous research interest on the triangular-lattice transition-metal phosphates. Here we report a comprehensive study on the structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline Na$_2$$A$$T$(PO$_4$)$_2$ ($A$ = Ba, Sr; $T$ = Co, Ni, Mn). X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements confirm that Na$_2$Ba$T$(PO$_4$)$_2$ (NB$T$P) crystallizes in a trigonal structure, while Na$_2$Sr$T$(PO$_4$)$_2$ (NS$T$P) forms a monoclinic structure with a slight distortion of the triangular network of $T^{2+}$ ions. The dc magnetization data show that all six compounds order antiferromagnetically below 2 K, and the Néel temperatures of NS$T$P are consistently higher than those of NB$T$P for $T$ = Co, Ni, and Mn, due to the release of geometrical frustration by monoclinic distortions. Further magnetocaloric measurements show that trigonal NB$T$P can reach a lower temperature in the quasi-adiabatic demagnetization process and thus shows a better performance in the magnetic refrigeration, compared with monoclinic NS$T$P. Our findings highlight the outstanding magnetocaloric performances of the trigonal transition-metal phosphates, and disclose two necessary ingredients for a superior magnetic coolant that can reach an ultra-low temperature, including a perfect geometrically frustrated lattice and a small effective spin number associated with the magnetic ions.

Abstract:Frustrated quantum magnets pose well-defined questions concerning quantum fluctuation effects and the nature of the many-body wavefunction, which challenge theory, numerics, experiment and materials synthesis. The S = 1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) presents a case where classical order is strongly suppressed by quantum fluctuations, leading to extensive renormalization of physical properties at all energy scales. However, purely two-dimensional (2D) models are difficult to realise in the 3D world and their physics is controlled by the Mermin-Wagner theorem, which describes the dominant effects of additional thermal fluctuations. Here we report the magnetic properties Ba8CoNb6O24, whose Co2+ions have an effective spin 1/2 and construct a regular TLAF with very large interlayer spacing. We find no magnetic ordering down to 0.028 K, strong low-energy spin fluctuations in qualitative agreement with theoretical analysis and a diverging correlation length, all indicating a Mermin-Wagner trend towards zero-temperature ordering in this ideal 2D system.

Abstract:We successfully synthesized and characterized the triangular lattice anitferromagnet Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, which comprises equilateral spin-5/2 Mn$^{2+}$ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic Nb$^{5+}$ layers. The detailed susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and spin wave theory simulation on this system reveal that it has a 120 degree ordering ground state below T$_N$ = 1.45 K with in-plane nearest-neighbor exchange interaction ~0.11 meV. While the large separation 18.9 A between magnetic layers makes the inter-layer exchange interaction virtually zero, our results suggest that a weak easy-plane anisotropy is the driving force for the k$_m$ = (1/3 1/3 0) magnetic ordering. The magnetic properties of Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, along with its classical excitation spectra, contrast with the related triple perovskite Ba$_3$MnNb$_2$O$_9$, which shows easy-axis anisotropy, and the iso-structural compound Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$, in which the effective spin-1/2 Co$^{2+}$ spins do not order down to 60 mK and in which the spin dynamics shows sign of strong quantum effects.

Abstract:Two triangular lattice antiferromagnets Sr$_3$Co(Nb,Ta)$_2$O$_9$ with an effective $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ of Co$^{2+}$ are synthesized and their magnetic properties are investigated via magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The leading in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange coupling is estimated to be $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 4.7$ K and 5.8 K, respectively. Both the compounds feature two-step magnetic transitions at low temperatures [($T_{\rm N1} \simeq 1.47$ K and $T_{\rm N2} \simeq 1.22$ K) and ($T_{\rm N1} \simeq 0.88$ K and $T_{\rm N2} \simeq 0.67$ K), respectively], driven by weak easy-axis anisotropy. Under magnetic field Sr$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$ evinces a plateau at $1/3$ magnetization. Interestingly, the high field magnetization of Sr$_3$CoTa$_2$O$_9$ reveals an exotic regime (between $H_{\rm S1}$ and $H_{\rm S2}$), below the fully polarized state in which the heat capacity at low temperatures is governed by a power law ($C_{\rm p} \propto T^{\alpha}$) with a reduced exponent $\alpha \simeq 2$. These results demonstrate an unusual field induced state with gapless excitations in the strongly frustrated magnet Sr$_3$CoTa$_2$O$_9$. The complete $T-H$ phase diagram is discussed for both the compounds.

Abstract:We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical frustration of the triangular spin lattice. Further studies under external fields were performed down to 50 mK, and the magnetic phase diagrams are established with magnetic fields applied both within and perpendicular to the triangular plane. KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ serves as an example of a two-dimensional triangular lattice with large spin values ($S=7/2$) and can be directly compared with the iso-structure KBaR(BO$_3$)$_2$ (R = Dy-Yb) family of doublet ground states, which exhibit effective spins of $S=1/2$.

Abstract:We report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba2MnTeO6 using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal Ba2MnTeO6 to be antiferromagnetically ordered with a propagation vector k=(0.5,0.5,0) and Néel transition temperature of TN≈20 K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Modeling of the inelastic neutron scattering data with linear spin wave theory yielded magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next-nearest interlayer of J1=0.27(3), meV J2=0.27(3) meV, and J3=−0.05(1) meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of Dzz=−0.01 meV. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals a collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order that is stabilized by the competition between J1,J2, and J3.

Field tunable BKT and quantum phase transitions in spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Abstract:Quantum magnetism is one of the most active fields for exploring exotic phases and phase transitions. The recently synthesized Na2BaCo(PO4)2 (NBCP) is an ideal material incarnation of the spin-1/2 easy axis triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF). Experimental evidence shows that NBCP hosts the spin supersolid state with a giant magnetocaloric effect. It was also proposed that the applied magnetic field B can drive the system through Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and other richer quantum phase transitions. However, the detection of these transitions is challenging because they onset at extremely low temperature T at around 60 mK, and the measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of these transitions requires high sensitivity. With the help of our newly developed gradient force magnetometer in a dilution refrigerator, we constructed the contour diagram of the magnetic susceptibility in the B-T phase diagram in T as cold as 30 mK. These results provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the several field-tunable quantum phase transitions and BKT melting of the spin supersolidity, which are especially significant when their giant magnetocaloric effects highlight potential applications for sub-Kelvin refrigeration under concerns about global helium shortages.

Thermal conductivity of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na2BaCo(PO4)2: Absence of itinerant fermionic excitations

Abstract:We present the ultralow-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which was recently argued to host itinerant fermionic excitations, like a quantum spin liquid, above its antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 0.148 K. In specific heat measurements, we confirm the peaks due to antiferromagnetic ordering when magnetic field $\mu_0 H \leq$ 1 T, roughly consistent with previous work [N. Li $et$ $al.$, Nat. Commun. 11, 4216 (2020)]. However, in thermal conductivity measurements, we observe negligible residual linear term in zero and finite magnetic fields, in sharp contrast to previous report [N. Li $et$ $al.$, Nat. Commun. 11, 4216 (2020)]. At 0.35 K, the thermal conductivity increases with field up to 3 T then saturates, similar to that of another triangular-lattice compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which further shows that the heat is conducted only by phonons with scattering from spins and boundary. Our results clearly demonstrate the absence of itinerant fermionic excitations in the disordered state above $T_{\rm N}$ in this frustrated antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, thus such a state is not as exotic as previously reported.
Magnetic Properties of New Triangular Lattice Magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$

Abstract:The geometrically frustrated two dimensional triangular lattice magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$ (A = Ba, Sr, La; B' = Co, Ni, Mn; B = W, Re) have been studied by x-ray diffraction, AC and DC susceptibilities, powder neutron diffraction, and specific heat measurements. The results reveal that (i) the samples containing Co$^{2+}$ (effective spin-1/2) and Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-1) ions with small spin numbers exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) ordering while the sample containing Mn$^{2+}$ (spin-5/2) ions with a large spin number exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. We ascribe these spin number manipulated ground states to the competition between the AFM B'-O-O-B' and FM B'-O-B-O-B' superexchange interactions; (ii) the chemical pressure introduced into the Co containing samples through the replacement of different size ions on the A site finely tunes the FM ordering temperature of the system. We attribute this effect to the modification of the FM interaction strength induced by the change of the O-B-O angle through chemical pressure.
Static and dynamic magnetic properties of the spin-5/2 triangle lattice antiferromagnet Na3Fe(PO4)2 studied by 31P NMR

Abstract:$^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of Fe$^{3+}$ ($S$ = 5/2) spins in the two-dimensional triangular lattice (TL) compound Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$. The temperature ($T$) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) shows a clear peak around N\'eel temperature, $T_{\rm N} = 10.9$~K, corresponding to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. From the temparature dependence of NMR shift ($K$) above $T_{\rm N}$, an exchange coupling between Fe$^{3+}$ spins was estimated to be $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 1.9$~K using the spin-5/2 Heisenberg isotropic-TL model. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1T$ divided by the magnetic susceptibility ($\chi$), $1/T_1T\chi$, above $T_{\rm N}$ proves the AFM nature of spin fluctuations below $\sim$ 50 K in the paramagnetic state. In the magnetically ordered state below $T_{\rm N}$, the characteristic rectangular shape of the NMR spectra is observed, indicative of a commensurate AFM state in its ground state. The strong temperature dependence of 1/$T_1$ in the AFM state is well explained by the two-magnon (Raman) process of the spin waves in a 3D antiferromagnet with a spin-anisotropy energy gap of 5.7 K. The temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization is also well reproduced by the spin waves. Those results indicate that the magnetically ordered state of Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$ is a conventional 3D AFM state, and no obvious spin frustration effects were detected in its ground state.
Correlated flat bands in the paramagnetic phase of triangular antiferromagnets Na$_2$BaX(PO$_4$)$_2$ (X = Mn, Co, Ni)

Abstract:Flat band systems in condensed matter physics are intriguing because they can exhibit exotic phases and unconventional properties. In this work, we studied three correlated magnetic systems, Na$_2$BaX(PO$_4$)$_2$ (X = Mn, Co, Ni), and revealed their unusual electronic structure and magnetic properties. Despite their different effective angular momentum, our first-principles calculations showed a similar electronic structure among them. However, their different valence configurations led to different responses to electronic correlations in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. Using the dynamical mean-field method, we found that all systems can be understood as a multi-band Hubbard model with Hund'ss coupling. Our calculations of spin susceptibility and the {\it ab-initio} estimation of magnetic exchange coupling indicated strong intra-plane antiferromagnetic coupling and weak inter-plane coupling in all systems. The ground states of these systems are largely degenerate. It is likely that none of these magnetic states would dominate over the others, leading to the possibility of quantum spin liquid states in these systems. Our work unifies the understanding of these three structurally similar systems and opens new avenues for exploring correlated flat bands with distinct electronic and magnetic responses.

Anisotropy stabilized magnetic phases of the triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$

Abstract:The magnetic H - T phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional easy plane antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ (S = 5/2) with an equilateral triangular lattice structure is studied with $^{87}$Rb NMR technique for field directed along hard axis C3. The studies confirm the two step transition from the low field umbrella-like incommensurate magnetic phase to the paramagnetic state observed recently (Mitamura et al. 2016). The transitions were identified as a lambda anomaly in the spin-lattice relaxation rate and a step increase of magnetic susceptibility at intermediate transition. The $^{87}$Rb NMR study precludes the possibility of either V or fan spin textures in the X phase. The additional transition is presumably associated with loss of inter plane magnetic order before the transition to paramagnetic state of individual triangular planes.

Abstract:We study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba3MnSb2O9, an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane 120o state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba3MnSb2O9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasi-classical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z2-vortex excitations.

Abstract:By means of a combined x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat study, we investigate the interplay between orthorhombic distortion and stripe-like antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the Mott insulator BaCoS$_{2}$ at $T_N=290$ K. The data give evidence of a purely electronic AFM transition with no participation of the lattice. The observation of large thermal fluctuations in the vicinity of $T_N$ and a Schottky anomaly unveils competing ground states within a minute $\sim$1 meV energy range that differ in the orbital and spin configurations of the Co ions. This interpretation suggests that the stripe-like order results from a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the geometrically frustrated pristine tetragonal phase, which offers an ideal playground to study the driving force of multi-orbital Mott transitions without the participation of the lattice.

Antiferromagnetic ℤ_2 Topological Metal Near the Metal-Insulator Transition in MnS_2

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor MnS_2 possesses both high-spin and low-spin magnetic phases that can be reversibly switched by applying pressure. With increasing pressure, the high-spin state undergoes pressure-induced metalization before transforming into a low-spin configuration, which is then closely followed by a volume collapse and structural transition. We show that the pressure driven band inversion is in fact topological, resulting in an antiferromagnetic ℤ_2 topological metal (Z2AFTM) phase with a small gap and a Weyl metal phase at higher pressures, both of which precede the spin-state crossover and volume collapse. In the Z2AFTM phase, the magnetic order results in a doubling of the periodic unit cell, and the resulting folding of the Brillouin zone leads to a ℤ_2 topological invariant protected by the persisting combined time-reversal and half-translation symmetries. Such a topological phase was proposed theoretically by Mong, Essin, and Moore in 2010 for a system with AFM order on a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, which until now has not been found in the pool of real materials. MnS_2 represents a realization of this original proposal through AFM order on the Mn FCC sublattice. A rich phase diagram of topological and magnetic phases tunable by pressure, establishes MnS_2 as a candidate material for exploring magnetic topological phase transitions and for potential applications in AFM spintronics.
