Abstract:The modeling of cracks is an important topic - both in engineering as well as in mathematics. Since crack propagation is characterized by a free boundary value problem (the geometry of the crack is not known beforehand, but part of the solution), approximations of the underlying sharp-interface problem based on phase-field models are often considered. Focusing on a rate-independent setting, these models are defined by a unidirectional gradient-flow of an energy functional. Since this energy functional is non-convex, the evolution of the variables such as the displacement field and the phase-field variable might be discontinuous in time leading to so-called brutal crack growth. For this reason, solution concepts have to be carefully chosen in order to predict discontinuities that are physically reasonable. One such concept is that of Balanced Viscosity solutions (BV solutions). This concept predicts physically sound energy trajectories that do not jump across energy barriers. The paper deals with a time-adaptive finite element phase-field model for rate-independent fracture which converges to BV solutions. The model is motivated by constraining the pseudo-velocity of the crack tip. The resulting constrained minimization problem is solved by the augmented Lagrangian method. Numerical examples highlight the predictive capabilities of the model and furthermore show the efficiency and the robustness of the final algorithm.

Abstract:The modeling of cracks has been an intensely researched topic for decades - both from the mechanical as well as from the mathematics point of view. As far as the modeling of sharp cracks/interfaces is concerned, the resulting free boundary problem is numerically very challenging. For this reason, diffuse approximations in the sense of phase-field theories have become very popular. Within this paper, the focus is on rate-independent damage models. Since the resulting phase-field energies in general are non-convex, we are faced with a discontinuous evolution of the phase-field variable. Solution concepts have to be carefully chosen in order to predict discontinuities that are physically reasonable. We focus here on the concept of balanced viscosity solutions and develop a convergence scheme that combines alternate minimization with a local minimization ansatz due to Mielke/Efendiev, [EM06]. We proof the convergence of the incremental solutions to balanced viscosity solutions. Moreover, the discretization concept is implemented and several carefully selected examples show the performance of this combined approach. Particularly, the effect of different norms and arc-length parameters in the local minimization scheme is investigated.
Towards Fully Automatic Modelling of the Fracture Process in Quasi-Brittle and Ductile Materials: a Unified Crack Growth Criterion

Abstract:Fully automatic finite element (FE) modelling of the fracture process in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and rocks and ductile materials such as metals and alloys, is of great significance in assessing structural integrity and presents tremendous challenges to the engineering community. One challenge lies in the adoption of an objective and effective crack propagation criterion. This paper proposes a crack propagation criterion based on the principle of energy conservation and the cohesive zone model (CZM). The virtual crack extension technique is used to calculate the differential terms in the criterion. A fully-automatic discrete crack modelling methodology, integrating the developed criterion, the CZM to model the crack, a simple remeshing procedure to accommodate crack propagation, the J2 flow theory implemented within the incremental plasticity framework to model the ductile materials, and a local arc-length solver to the nonlinear equation system, is developed and implemented in an in-house program. Three examples, i.e., a plain concrete beam with a single shear crack, a reinforced concrete (RC) beam with multiple cracks and a compact-tension steel specimen, are simulated. Good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental data is found, which demonstrates the applicability of the criterion to both quasi-brittle and ductile materials.
Phase-field modeling of fracture in heterogeneous materials -- jump conditions, convergence and crack propagation

Abstract:In this contribution, a variational diffuse modeling framework for cracks in heterogeneous media is presented. A static order parameter smoothly bridges the discontinuity at material interfaces, while an evolving phase-field captures the regularized crack. The key novelty is the combination of a strain energy split with a partial rank-I relaxation in the vicinity of the diffuse interface. The former is necessary to account for physically meaningful crack kinematics like crack closure, the latter ensures the mechanical jump conditions throughout the diffuse region. The model is verified by a convergence study, where a circular bi-material disc with and without a crack is subjected to radial loads. For the uncracked case, analytical solutions are taken as reference. In a second step, the model is applied to crack propagation, where a meaningful influence on crack branching is observed, that underlines the necessity of a reasonable homogenization scheme. The presented model is particularly relevant for the combination of any variational strain energy split in the fracture phase-field model with a diffuse modeling approach for material heterogeneities.

Abstract:A variational discrete element method is applied to simulate quasi-static crack propagation. Cracks are considered to propagate between the mesh cells through the mesh facets. The elastic behaviour is parametrized by the continuous mechanical parameters (Young modulus and Poisson ratio). A discrete energetic cracking criterion coupled to a discrete kinking criterion guide the cracking process. Two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to illustrate the robustness and versatility of the method.

Abstract:A rate-dependent cohesive continuum model is developed to represent material particles interacting in a viscous medium. Interactions between material particles are modeled using a cohesive force law while microstructural resistance to relaxation is represented by a phenomenological continuum viscosity function. The model exhibits two failure mechanisms, elastic bond breaking and viscous weakening, which combine to induce rate dependence in the cohesive strength, fracture energy, and cohesive state wave speed. The model is used to simulate dynamic crack propagation. Results display rate-dependent terminal speeds which correspond to the cohesive strength and not to the local driving force; thus supporting the local limiting speed hypothesis. Abstract:We show that for the simulation of crack propagation in quasi-brittle, two-dimensional solids, very good results can be obtained with an embedded strong discontinuity quadrilateral finite element that has incompatible modes. Even more importantly, we demonstrate that these results can be obtained without using a crack tracking algorithm. Therefore, the simulation of crack patterns with several cracks, including branching, becomes possible. The avoidance of a tracking algorithm is mainly enabled by the application of a novel, local (Gauss-point based) criterion for crack nucleation, which determines the time of embedding the localisation line as well as its position and orientation. We treat the crack evolution in terms of a thermodynamical framework, with softening variables describing internal dissipative mechanisms of material degradation. As presented by numerical examples, many elements in the mesh may develop a crack, but only some of them actually open and/or slide, dissipate fracture energy, and eventually form the crack pattern. The novel approach has been implemented for statics and dynamics, and the results of computed difficult examples (including Kalthoff's test) illustrate its very satisfying performance. It effectively overcomes unfavourable restrictions of the standard embedded strong discontinuity formulations, namely the simulation of the propagation of a single crack only. Moreover, it is computationally fast and straightforward to implement. Our numerical solutions match the results of experimental tests and previously reported numerical results in terms of crack pattern, dissipated fracture energy, and load–displacement curve.

Abstract:We address the simulation of dynamic crack propagation in brittle materials using a regularized phase-field description, which can also be interpreted as a damage-gradient model. Benefiting from a variational framework, the dynamic evolution of the mechanical fields are obtained as a succession of energy minimizations. We investigate the capacity of such a simple model to reproduce specific experimental features of dynamic in-plane fracture. These include the crack branching phenomenon as well as the existence of a limiting crack velocity below the Rayleigh wave speed for mode I propagation. Numerical results show that, when a crack accelerates, the damaged band tends to widen in a direction perpendicular to the propagation direction, before forming two distinct macroscopic branches. Crack propagation in anisotropic brittle materials: from a phase-field model to a shape optimization approach

Abstract:The phase-field method is based on the energy minimization principle which is a geometric method for modeling diffusive cracks that are popularly implemented with irreversibility based on Griffith's criterion. This method requires a length-scale parameter that smooths the sharp discontinuity, which influences the diffuse band and results in mesh-sensitive fracture propagation results. Recently, a novel approach based on the optimization on Riemannian shape spaces has been proposed, where the crack path is realized by techniques from shape optimization. This approach requires the shape derivative, which is derived in a continuous sense and used for a gradient-based algorithm to minimize the energy of the system. Due to the continuous derivation of the shape derivative, this approach yields mesh-independent results. In this paper, the novel approach based on shape optimization is presented, followed by an assessment of the predicted crack path in anisotropic brittle material using numerical calculations from a phase-field model.

Abstract:In this work we propose and compare the two models for crack propagation in dynamics. Both models are based on embedded strong discontinuities for localized cohesive type crack description and both provide the advantage to not to require tracking algorithms. The first one is based on discrete lattice approach, where the domain is discretized with Voronoi cells held together prior to crack occurrence by cohesive links represented in terms of Timoshenko beams. The second one is based on constant strain triangular solid element. In both models, propagation of cracks activates enhancements in the displacement field leading to embedded strong discontinuities. The latter remain localized inside the element, regulated by the localized traction separation behavior defined through exponential softening law. Thus, the both models provide the result that remain mesh-independent, with fracture energy as the model parameter. We show that implementation in dynamics framework can be obtained by adding inertial effects without modifying the existing quasi-statics models. In order to provide reliable results, classical implicit Newmark algorithm can be used for time integration. The two presented models are subjected to dynamic crack propagation benchmarks, where detailed analysis on strain, kinetic, plastic free and dissipated energy during simulation is verified by comparison to the amount of total work which is introduced into the system. The main strength of the proposed approach is that cracks initiation, propagation, their coalescence, merging and branching are automatically obtained without any tracking algorithms. In addition, since the discontinuities remain localized inside elements, accurate results can be obtained even with coarser grids, leading to efficient methodology capable of capturing complex crack patterns in dynamics.

Abstract:Lattice networks with dissipative interactions are often employed to analyse materials with discrete micro- or meso-structures, or for a description of heterogeneous materials which can be modelled discretely. They are, however, computationally prohibitive for engineering-scale applications. The (variational) QuasiContinuum (QC) method is a concurrent multiscale approach that reduces their computational cost by fully resolving the (dissipative) lattice network in small regions of interest while coarsening elsewhere. When applied to damageable lattices, moving crack tips can be captured by adaptive mesh refinement schemes, whereas fully-resolved trails in crack wakes can be removed by mesh coarsening. In order to address crack propagation efficiently and accurately, we develop in this contribution the necessary generalizations of the variational QC methodology. First, a suitable definition of crack paths in discrete systems is introduced, which allows for their geometrical representation in terms of the signed distance function. Second, special function enrichments based on the partition of unity concept are adopted, in order to capture kinematics in the wakes of crack tips. Third, a summation rule that reflects the adopted enrichment functions with sufficient degree of accuracy is developed. Finally, as our standpoint is variational, we discuss implications of the mesh refinement and coarsening from an energy-consistency point of view. All theoretical considerations are demonstrated using two numerical examples for which the resulting reaction forces, energy evolutions, and crack paths are compared to those of the direct numerical simulations.

FeynKrack: A continuum model for quasi-brittle damage through Feynman-Kac killed diffusion

Abstract:Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is a popular framework for modelling crack propagation in solids. The CDM uses a damage parameter to quantitatively assess what one loosely calls `material degradation'. While this parameter is sometimes given a physical meaning, the mathematical equations for its evolution are generally not consistent with such physical interpretations. Curiously, degradation in the CDM may be viewed as a change of measures, wherein the damage variable appears as the Radon-Nikodym derivative. We adopt this point of view and use a probabilistic measure-valued description for the random microcracks underlying quasi-brittle damage. We show that the evolution of the underlying density may be described via killed diffusion as in the Feynman-Kac theory. Damage growth is then interpreted as the reduction in this measure over a region, which in turn quantifies the disruption of bonds through a loss of force-transmitting mechanisms between nearby material points. Remarkably, the evolution of damage admits an approximate closed-form solution. This brings forth substantive computational ease, facilitating fast yet accurate simulations of large dimensional problems. By selecting an appropriate killing rate, one accounts for the irreversibility of damage and thus eliminates the need for ad-hoc history-dependent routes typically employed, say, in phase field modelling of damage. Our proposal FeynKrack (a short form for Feynman-Kac crack propagator) is validated and demonstrated for its efficacy through several simulations on quasi-brittle damage. It also offers a promising stochastic route for future explorations of non-equilibrium thermodynamic aspects of damage.

Abstract:A nonlocal model for dynamic brittle damage is introduced consisting of two phases, one elastic and the other inelastic. Evolution from the elastic to the inelastic phase depends on material strength. Existence and uniqueness of the displacement-failure set pair follow from an initial value problem describing the evolution. The displacement-failure pair satisfies energy balance. The length of nonlocality is taken to be small relative to the domain in , . The strain is formulated as a difference quotient of the displacement in the nonlocal model. The two point force is expressed in terms of a weighted difference quotient and delivers an evolution on a subset of . This evolution provides an energy balance between external energy, elastic energy, and damage energy including fracture energy. For any prescribed loading the deformation energy resulting in material failure over a region is uniformly bounded as . For fixed , the failure energy is discovered to be is nonzero for dimensional regions associated with flat crack surfaces. Calculation shows, this failure energy is the Griffith fracture energy given by the energy release rate multiplied by area for (or length for ). The nonlocal field theory is shown to recover a solution of Naiver's equation outside a propagating flat traction free crack in the limit of vanishing spatial nonlocality. The theory and simulations presented here corroborate the recent experimental findings of (Rozen-Levy et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett. 125(17):175501, 2020) that cracks follow the location of maximum energy dissipation inside the intact material. Simulations show fracture evolution through the generation of a traction free internal boundary seen as a wake left behind a moving strain concentration.

Abstract:The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is a numerical method for modeling strong (displacement) as well as weak (strain) discontinuities within a standard finite element framework. In the X-FEM, special functions are added to the finite element approximation using the framework of partition of unity. For crack modeling in isotropic linear elasticity, a discontinuous function and the two-dimensional asymptotic crack-tip displacement fields are used to account for the crack. This enables the domain to be modeled by finite elements without explicitly meshing the crack surfaces, and hence quasi-static crack propagation simulations can be carried out without remeshing. In this paper, we discuss some of the key issues in the X-FEM and describe its implementation within a general-purpose finite element code. The finite element program Dynaflow™ is considered in this study and the implementation for modeling 2-d cracks in isotropic and bimaterial media is described. In particular, the array-allocation for enriched degrees of freedom, use of geometric-based queries for carrying out nodal enrichment and mesh partitioning, and the assembly procedure for the discrete equations are presented. We place particular emphasis on the design of a computer code to enable the modeling of discontinuous phenomena within a finite element framework.

Abstract:A nonlocal model of peridynamic type for dynamic brittle damage is introduced consisting of two phases, one elastic and the other inelastic. Evolution from the elastic to the inelastic phase depends on material strength. Existence and uniqueness of the displacement-failure set pair follow from the initial value problem. The displacement-failure pair satisfies energy balance. The length of nonlocality $\epsilon$ is taken to be small relative to the domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. The new nonlocal model delivers a two point strain evolution on a subset of $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}^d$. This evolution provides an energy that interpolates between volume energy corresponding to elastic behavior and surface energy corresponding to failure. In general the deformation energy resulting in material failure over a region $R$ is given by a $d-1$ dimensional integral that is uniformly bounded as $\epsilon\rightarrow 0$. For fixed $\epsilon$, the failure energy is nonzero for $d-1$ dimensional regions $R$ associated with flat crack surfaces. This failure energy is the Griffith fracture energy given by the energy release rate multiplied by area for $d=3$ (or length for $d=2$). The nonlocal field theory is shown to recover a solution of Naiver's equation outside a propagating flat traction free crack in the limit of vanishing spatial nonlocality. Simulations illustrate fracture evolution through generation of an internal traction free boundary as a wake left behind a moving strain concentration. Visco-energetic solutions for a model of crack growth in brittle materials

Abstract:Visco-energetic solutions have been recently advanced as a new solution concept for rate-independent systems, alternative to energetic solutions/quasistatic evolutions and balanced viscosity solutions. In the spirit of this novel concept, we revisit the analysis of the variational model proposed by Francfort and Marigo for the quasi-static crack growth in brittle materials, in the case of antiplane shear. In this context, visco-energetic solutions can be constructed by perturbing the time incremental scheme for quasistatic evolutions by means of a viscous correction inspired by the term introduced by Almgren, Taylor, and Wang in the study of mean curvature flows. With our main result we prove the existence of a visco-energetic solution with a given initial crack. We also show that, if the cracks have a finite number of tips evolving smoothly on a given time interval, visco-energetic solutions comply with Griffith's criterion.

Abstract:We are concerned with the numerical solution of a unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum mechanics that goes back to the work of Godunov, Peshkov and Romenski <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0640">[64]</a>, <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0670">[67]</a>, <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0960">[96]</a> (GPR model) and which is an extension of nonlinear hyperelasticity that is able to describe simultaneously nonlinear elasto-plastic solids at large strain, as well as viscous and ideal fluids. The proposed governing PDE system also contains the effect of heat conduction and can be shown to be symmetric and thermodynamically compatible, as it obeys the first and second law of thermodynamics.In this paper we extend the GPR model to the simulation of nonlinear dynamic rupture processes, which can be achieved by adding an additional scalar to the governing PDE system. This extra parameter describes the material damage and is governed by an advection-reaction equation, where the stiff and highly nonlinear reaction mechanisms depend on the ratio of the local equivalent stress to the yield stress of the material. The stiff reaction mechanisms are integrated in time via an efficient exponential time integrator. Due to the multiple spatial and temporal scales involved in the problem of crack generation and propagation, the model is solved on space–time adaptive Cartesian meshes using high order accurate discontinuous Galerkin finite element schemes endowed with an a posteriori subcell finite volume limiter.A key feature of our new model is the use of a twofold diffuse interface approach that allows the cracks to form anywhere and at any time, independently of the chosen computational grid, which is simply adaptive Cartesian (AMR). This is substantially different from many fracture modeling approaches that need to resolve discontinuities explicitly, such as for example dynamic shear rupture models used in computational seismology, where the geometry of the rupture fault needs to prescribed a priori. We furthermore make use of a scalar volume fraction function α that indicates whether a given spatial point is inside the solid (<math>α=1</math>) or outside (<math>α=0</math>), thus allowing the description of solids of arbitrarily complex shape.We show extensive numerical comparisons with experimental results for stress-strain diagrams of different real materials and for the generation and propagation of fracture in rocks and pyrex glass at low and high velocities. Overall, a very good agreement between numerical simulations and experiments is obtained. The proposed model is also naturally able to describe material fatigue.

Abstract:Fractures are normally present in the underground and are, for some physical processes, of paramount importance. Their accurate description is fundamental to obtain reliable numerical outcomes useful, e.g., for energy management. Depending on the physical and geometrical properties of the fractures, fluid flow can behave differently, going from a slow Darcian regime to more complicated Brinkman or even Forchheimer regimes for high velocity. The main problem is to determine where in the fractures one regime is more adequate than others. In order to determine these low-speed and high-speed regions, this work proposes an adaptive strategy which is based on selecting the appropriate constitutive law linking velocity and pressure according to a threshold criterion on the magnitude of the fluid velocity itself. Both theoretical and numerical aspects are considered and investigated, showing the potentiality of the proposed approach. From the analytical viewpoint, we show existence of weak solutions to such model under reasonable hypotheses on the constitutive laws. To this end, we use a variational approach identifying solutions with minimizers of an underlying energy functional. From the numerical viewpoint, we propose a one-dimensional algorithm which tracks the interface between the low- and high-speed regions. By running numerical experiments using this algorithm, we illustrate some interesting behaviors of our adaptive model on a single fracture and small networks of intersecting fractures.
Navigating with Stability: Local Minima, Patterns, and Evolution in a Gradient Damage Fracture Model

Abstract:In phase-field theories of brittle fracture, crack initiation, growth and path selection are investigated using non-convex energy functionals and a stability criterion. The lack of convexity with respect to the state poses difficulties to monolithic solvers that aim to solve for kinematic and internal variables, simultaneously. In this paper, we inquire into the effectiveness of quasi-Newton algorithms as an alternative to conventional Newton-Raphson solvers. These algorithms improve convergence by constructing a positive definite approximation of the Hessian, bargaining improved convergence with the risk of missing bifurcation points and stability thresholds. Our study focuses on one-dimensional phase-field fracture models of brittle thin films on elastic foundations. Within this framework, in the absence of irreversibility constraint, we construct an equilibrium map that represents all stable and unstable equilibrium states as a function of the external load, using well-known branch-following bifurcation techniques. Our main finding is that quasi-Newton algorithms fail to select stable evolution paths without exact second variation information. To solve this issue, we perform a spectral analysis of the full Hessian, providing optimal perturbations that enable quasi-Newton methods to follow a stable and potentially unique path for crack evolution. Finally, we discuss the stability issues and optimal perturbations in the case when the damage irreversibility is present, changing the topological structure of the set of admissible perturbations from a linear vector space to a convex cone.
