Abstract:Background: Esophageal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. A deeper understanding of the trends in annual incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of esophageal cancer is critical for management and prevention. In this study, we report on the disease burden of esophageal cancer in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019 by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI). Methods: Data on incidence, mortality, and DALYs were extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. The estimated numbers and age-standardized rates for esophageal cancer in 2019 are presented in this paper, as well as trends from 1990 to 2019. All estimates are presented as counts and age-standardized rates per 100,000 population, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) for each estimate. Results: In 2019, nearly 535,000 (95% UI: 467,000-595,000) new cases of esophageal cancer occurred globally. Esophageal cancer was responsible for more than 498,000 (95% UI: 438,000-551,000) deaths and 11.7 million (95% UI: 10.4-12.9 million) DALYs. Worldwide age-standardized rates of esophageal cancer, including incidence, deaths, and DALYs, have declined since 1990. However, the trends differ across countries and territories. Notably, there was a nonlinear but generally inverse correlation between age-standardized DALY rates and SDI. Higher age-standardized incidence and death rates were observed in males compared to females, and both increased with age. Regarding risk factors, smoking, alcohol use, and high body-mass index were 3 predominant contributors to esophageal cancer DALYs in 2019 for both sexes worldwide. Conclusions: This study found a global reduction in the esophageal cancer burden, but substantial heterogeneity remains across regions and countries. Hence, the identification of high-risk groups and the exploration of specific local strategies and primary prevention efforts are required.

Abstract:Abstract Objective In view of the high incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer, the latest statistical data on the disease burden of esophageal cancer can provide strategies for cancer screening, early detection and treatment, and help to rationally allocate health resources. This study provides an analysis of the global disease burden and risk factors of esophageal cancer from 1990 to 2019. Methods Using the 2019 Global Burden of Disease, Injury and Risk Factor (GBD) data, we present the incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) of esophageal cancer in 21 regions and 204 countries and different sociodemographic index (SDI) regions from 1990 to 2019. The age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the age, period, and cohort trend of esophageal cancer in different SDI regions. The estimated proportion of DALY attributable to each risk factor from 1990 to 2019. Results From 1990 to 2019, the number of new cases of esophageal cancer, the number of deaths and DALY increased by 67.07%, 55.97% and 42.13%, respectively, but age standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age standardized DALY rate (ASDR) decreased by 19.28%, 25.32% and 88.22%, respectively. Overall, the results of the age-period-cohort model showed that the incidence, mortality, and DALY rates in countries and regions with higher SDI levels showed a downward trend over time and with the passage of time. Conversely, there were no significant changes in incidence and mortality in countries and regions with low SDI levels. In the past 30 years, the incidence and death of esophageal cancer in the world has gradually changed to people over 80 years old, but the population aged 60–79 still accounts for the largest proportion. The global DALY in esophageal cancer is mainly attributable to smoking, followed by alcohol consumption and occupational exposure. Conclusions Although ASIR, ASMR and ASDR have decreased significantly, esophageal cancer is still the main factor causing the disease burden worldwide. Public health administrators in low SDI and low-middle SDI countries are high-risk areas for esophageal cancer, and preventive control measures should be implemented to raise awareness, screening, and treatment of esophageal cancer in these areas. Tobacco and alcohol control and reduction of occupational hazards are key steps in reducing the burden of esophageal cancer.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the global burden of esophageal cancer (EC) and determine the temporal trends and factors influencing changes in the global burden. Methods: The latest incidence and mortality data for EC worldwide were obtained from GLOBALCAN 2022. The mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates for EC from 1990–2019 were sourced from the 2019 Global Burden of Diseases. Trends in EC mortality and DALYs attributable to 11 risk factors or clusters of risk were analyzed using the joinpoint regression model. The trends in age-related EC burden were assessed using a decomposition approach. Results: An estimated 511,054 new cases of EC were diagnosed in 2022 with 445,391 deaths worldwide. Approximately 75% of cases and deaths occurred in Asia. Nearly 50% of global EC deaths and DALYs were attributed to tobacco use in men in 2019, while 20% were attributed to high body mass index (BMI) in women. From 1990–2019, EC deaths and DALYs attributable to almost all risk factors had declining trends, while EC deaths and DALYs attributed to high BMI in men had upward trends. The age-related EC burden exhibited an upward trend driven by population growth and aging, which contributed to 307.4 thousand deaths and 7.2 million DALYs due to EC. Conclusions: The EC burden remains substantial worldwide. Effective tobacco and obesity control measures are critical for addressing the risk-attributable burden of EC. Population growth and aging pose challenges for EC prevention and control efforts.

Abstract:Abstract Background: This study aimed to predict the disease burden of esophageal cancer (EC) over the period 2013-2030 in China. Methods : A dynamic cohort Markov model was developed to simulate the EC prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALY), and the medical direct expenditure based on gender. JoinPoint Regression Program was used to calculate the average annual percentage change (AAPC) of EC prevalence and DALY rates, while the regression model was applied to analyze the changing trend of economic burden over time. Results: The predicted DALY rates per 100 000 people increased in both-sex (219.17 - 252.39) and males (302.89 – 384.31), while it decreased in females (131.21- 115.91). The years of life lost (YLL) accounted for the majority of DALYs. The AAPC were 0.8%(95% CI, 0.8%-0.9%), 1.4%(95% CI, 1.3%- 1.5%), and -0.7%(95% CI, -0.8%- -0.7%) in both-sex, males and females, respectively. The medical direct expenditure in both-sex, males, and females was predicted to increase by 165.35%, 194.04%, and 94.20%, respectively. Conclusions: EC still caused a severe burden on society. YLL was responsible for the majority of the DALYs, which highly suggesting the implementation of accurate prevention like screening and early diagnosis and treatment programs.
Disease burden and related risk factors of esophageal cancer in China and globally from 1990 to 2021, with forecast to 2035: An analysis and comparison

Abstract:Introduction: In this study we estimate the burden of esophageal cancer (EC) in China and globally from 1990 to 2021, with a forecast to 2035, using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data. We also analyze the related risk factors to investigate burden trends. Methods: Mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), crude rates, and age-standardized rates of EC were analyzed in China and globally from 1990 to 2035, utilizing GBD open data as a secondary dataset analysis of GBD data. Temporal change trends of EC risk factors were analyzed from 1990 to 2021. Joinpoint regression determined average annual percentage change (AAPC) of age-standardized rates. Descriptive analysis compared mortality and DALYs by age groups. Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) predicted age-standardized mortality and DALYs rates for the next 14 years. Results: The ASMR and ASDR fluctuations in EC were significant in China, showing an overall downward trend. Globally, although there was also a downward trend, the fluctuations were relatively mild. The number of deaths and DALYs related to EC in China and globally showed a significant upward trend. Age-specific burden trends in China for EC indicated that the age group with the peak number of EC deaths shifted to the 70-74 years age group in 2021, while DALYs peaked in the 65-69 years age group. The crude mortality rate (CMR) peaked consistently in 1990 and 2021, both within the 90-94 years age range, while the crude DALY rate (CDR) shifted to the 85-89 years age group. Overall, the burden of EC deaths and DALYs in the population aged <40 years was relatively low, increasing rapidly after the age of 40 years, reaching a peak and gradually declining, and reaching a lower level after the age of 85 years. The predictive results of the BAPC model indicated that over the next 14 years, both ASMR and ASDR for EC in China and globally would show a slight overall increase. The GBD 2021 study identified smoking, high alcohol use, chewing tobacco, and diet low in vegetables as the main risk factors affecting EC mortality rate and DALYs. Among these, smoking and alcohol use were the most significant risk factors, with a higher impact on EC in China compared to the global level. From 1990 to 2021, the overall changes in ASMR and ASDR indicate a decreasing trend in the impact of these four risk factors on EC mortality rate and DALYs. Conclusions: The burden of EC is expected to steadily increase in China and globally until 2035, posing a significant challenge. Targeted prevention and control policies, such as calling on people to quit smoking and reduce alcohol use, may help curb this upward trend.
Burdens of stomach and esophageal cancer from 1990 to 2019 and projection to 2030 in China: Findings from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study

Abstract:Background: Stomach and esophageal cancer exhibit high morbidity and mortality rate in China, resulting in substantial disease burdens. It is imperative to identify the temporal trends of stomach and esophageal cancer from 1990 to 2019 and project future trends until 2030, which can provide valuable information for planning effective management and prevention strategies. Methods: We collected and analysed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) between 1990 and 2019, including incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR), mortality rate (ASMR) and DALYs rate. We also calculated and reported the proportion of mortality and DALYs attributable to risk factors by sex in China and different regions. The Bayesian age-period-cohort model was applied to project future trends until 2030. Results: The new cases, deaths and DALYs of stomach and esophageal cancer increased from 1990 to 2019. However, the ASIR, ASMR and age-standardised DALYs rates for stomach and esophageal cancer all decreased during the same period. These changes may be related to risks, such as smoking and diet. Furthermore, we utilised the projection model to estimate that the ASIR and ASMR of stomach and esophageal cancer among females will likely follow steady downward trends, while the ASMR of stomach cancer among males is expected to exhibit a significant decline. However, the ASIR of stomach and esophageal cancer and the ASMR of esophageal cancer among males are projected to display slight upward trends until 2030. Conclusions: The analysis of stomach and esophageal cancer trends in China from 1990 to 2030 reveals a general decline. However, it is crucial to acknowledge the persistent high burden of both cancers in the country. Adopting healthy lifestyle practices, including the reduction of tobacco and alcohol intake, avoidance of moldy foods and increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables can contribute to mitigating the risk of stomach and esophageal cancer. Significantly, the formulation and implementation of well-founded and efficacious public health policies are imperative for alleviating the disease burden in China.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the global burden, risk factors, and trends of esophageal cancer based on age, sex, and histological subtype. The data were retrieved from cancer registries database from 48 countries in the period 1980–2017. Temporal patterns of incidence and mortality were evaluated by average annual percent change (AAPC) using joinpoint regression. Associations with risk factors were examined by linear regression. The highest incidence of esophageal cancer was observed in Eastern Asia. The highest incidence of adenocarcinoma (AC) was found in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. A higher AC/squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) incidence ratio was associated with a higher prevalence of obesity and elevated cholesterol. We observed an incidence increase (including AC and SCC) in some countries, with the Czech Republic (female: AAPC 4.66), Spain (female: 3.41), Norway (male: 3.10), Japan (female: 2.18), Thailand (male: 2.17), the Netherlands (male: 2.11; female: 1.88), and Canada (male: 1.51) showing the most significant increase. Countries with increasing mortality included Thailand (male: 5.24), Austria (female: 3.67), Latvia (male: 2.33), and Portugal (male: 1.12). Although the incidence of esophageal cancer showed an overall decreasing trend, an increasing trend was observed in some countries with high AC/SCC incidence ratios. More preventive measures are needed for these countries.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:To estimate the contribution of tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, low vegetable intake and low fruit intake to esophageal cancer mortality and incidence in China.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We calculated the proportion of esophageal cancer attributable to four known modifiable risk factors [population attributable fraction (PAF)]. Exposure data was taken from meta-analyses and large-scale national surveys of representative samples of the Chinese population. Data on relative risks were also from meta-analyses and large-scale prospective studies. Esophageal cancer mortality and incidence came from the 3(rd) national death cause survey and population-based cancer registries in China. We estimated that 87,065 esophageal cancer deaths (men 67,686; women: 19,379) and 108,206 cases (men: 83,968, women: 24,238) were attributable to tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, low vegetable intake and low fruit intake in China in 2005. About 17.9% of esophageal cancer deaths among men and 1.9% among women were attributable to tobacco smoking. About 15.2% of esophageal cancer deaths in men and 1.3% in women were caused by alcohol drinking. Low vegetable intake was responsible for 4.3% esophageal cancer deaths in men and 4.1% in women. The fraction of esophageal cancer deaths attributable to low fruit intake was 27.1% in men and 28.0% in women. Overall, 46% of esophageal cancers (51% in men and 33% in women) were attributable to these four modifiable risk factors.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, low vegetable intake and low fruit intake were responsible for 46% of esophageal cancer mortality and incidence in China in 2005. These findings provide useful data for developing guidelines for esophageal cancer prevention and control in China.
Burden, trends, and risk factors of esophageal cancer in China from 1990 to 2017: an up-to-date overview and comparison with those in Japan and South Korea

Abstract:Abstract Background The epidemiology of esophageal cancer (EC) can elucidate its causes and risk factors and help develop prevention strategies. We aimed to provide an overview of the burden, trends, and risk factors of EC in China from 1990 to 2017. We also investigated the differences between China, Japan, and South Korea and discussed the possible causes of the disparities. Methods We used the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 to obtain data on incident cases, deaths, disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) cases, age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized death rate (ASDR), and age-standardized DALY rate of EC in China, Japan, and South Korea from 1990 to 2017. Trend analysis was performed using joinpoint analysis. We measured the associations between ASIR, ASDR, and age-standardized DALY rate and the socio-demographic index (SDI) for 1990–2017. We also analyzed the risk factors associated with EC deaths and DALYs. Results China recorded 234,624 (95% uncertainty intervals: 223,240–246,036) incident cases of and 212,586 (202,673–222,654) deaths from EC in 2017. The ASIR and ASDR declined from 1990 to 2017. Until 2017, the ASIR was 12.23, and ASDR was 11.25 per 100,000 persons. The DALYs were 4,464,980 (4,247,816–4,690,846) with an age-standardized rate of 222.58 per 100,000 persons in 2017. The ASIR, ASDR, and age-standardized DALY rate in China were twice those of Japan and South Korea. These three indicators showed a decreasing trend, whereas SDI increased, in all three countries from 1990 to 2017. Tobacco and alcohol use remained the major risk factors for EC death and DALYs, especially for men in China and women in Japan and South Korea. High body mass index (BMI) and low-fruit diet were the main risk factors for women in China. Conclusions The incident cases and deaths of EC in China, Japan, and South Korea increased from 1990 to 2017, whereas the ASIR, ASDR, and age-standardized DALY rate declined. China had the greatest burden of EC among three countries. SDI and aging along with tobacco use, alcohol use, high BMI, and low-fruit diet were the main risk factors of death and DALYs and should be paid more attention.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Nearly half of the cases of esophageal cancer in the world were in China, but the corresponding burden in China has not been estimated for the past decades or for the near future.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>Data on the incidence, mortality, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) rates owing to esophageal cancer in China from 1990 to 2017 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017. To reflect the trend in the disease burden, we calculated the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in the age‐standardized rates of these three outcomes in China from 1990 to 2017.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The age‐standardized incidence rate (ASIR) for esophageal cancer decreased from 19.38/100,000 in 1990 to 12.23/100,000 in 2017, with an EAPC of −2.53 (95%CI: −2.90, −2.16), but the number of cases of esophageal cancer increased from 164,473 to 234,624. The age‐standardized rates of esophageal cancer in females were always lower than they were in males during the study period, and there was a downward trend that was more pronounced among females than males. The most common risk factors for males were smoking and alcohol consumption, while the most common risk factors for females were a diet low in fruits and a high body mass index (BMI). New cases of, and deaths from esophageal cancer are predicted to increase by about 1.5 times in the coming 25 years.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>Although the age‐standardized burden of esophageal cancer has been declining, the number of new cases of, and deaths from esophageal cancer have increased in China over the past 30 years, and they will continue to increase in the near future. Hence, national policies should be adopted to promote the prevention and management of known risk factors for it, especially smoking and excessive caloric intake.</p></section>

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to explore the global burden of early-onset cancer based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study for 29 cancers worldwid.Methods and analysis Incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and risk factors for 29 early-onset cancer groups were obtained from GBD.Results Global incidence of early-onset cancer increased by 79.1% and the number of early-onset cancer deaths increased by 27.7% between 1990 and 2019. Early-onset breast, tracheal, bronchus and lung, stomach and colorectal cancers showed the highest mortality and DALYs in 2019. Globally, the incidence rates of early-onset nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer showed the fastest increasing trend, whereas early-onset liver cancer showed the sharpest decrease. Early-onset colorectal cancers had high DALYs within the top five ranking for both men and women. High-middle and middle Sociodemographic Index (SDI) regions had the highest burden of early-onset cancer. The morbidity of early-onset cancer increased with the SDI, and the mortality rate decreased considerably when SDI increased from 0.7 to 1. The projections indicated that the global number of incidence and deaths of early-onset cancer would increase by 31% and 21% in 2030, respectively. Dietary risk factors (diet high in red meat, low in fruits, high in sodium and low in milk, etc), alcohol consumption and tobacco use are the main risk factors underlying early-onset cancers.Conclusion Early-onset cancer morbidity continues to increase worldwide with notable variances in mortality and DALYs between areas, countries, sex and cancer types. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle could reduce early-onset cancer disease burden.

Abstract:The spatial distribution of esophageal cancer ASMR (A) and ASDR (B) attributable to high BMI in 2019. Background Esophageal cancer (EC), a common and fatal disease, includes two histological subtypes; esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (ECA). To aid policymakers in the allocation of resources for the prevention and treatment of EC, updated data on EC deaths and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to high body mass index (BMI) are necessary. The objective of this study was to identify trends in EC associated with high BMI between 1990 and 2019 using 2019 Global Burden of Disease data. Methods In this observational population‐based study, epidemiological data on the association between high BMI and EC were obtained from GBD 2019. The age‐standardized mortality rate (ASMRs) and disability‐adjusted life year rate (ASDRs) attributable to high BMI‐related EC were stratified by year, age, country, and sociodemographic index (SDI). The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to evaluate the temporal trends of the ASMRs and ASDRs between 1990 and 2019. Results In 2019, the proportion of EC deaths and DALYs attributed to high BMI was 18.1% and 18.9%, respectively, resulting in 89 904 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 27 879–171 255) deaths and 2 202 314 (95% CI: 681 901–4 173 080) DALYs. High BMI‐related deaths and DALYs showed a strong upward trend, increasing by more than two‐fold since 1990. East Asia and Western Europe showed the highest risk of EC mortality and DALYs attributable to high BMI; China and the USA bear the greatest burden. The ASMR and ASDR increased in five SDI regions. Conclusions The incidence of EC is increasing, particularly in developing nations, which may be attributed to the prevalence of high BMI. To mitigate the impact of high BMI on the incidence of EC, it is important to increase awareness of its deleterious effects, which may alleviate the burden of this disease.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to predict the disease burden of esophageal cancer (EC) over the period 2013-2030 in China. Methods : A dynamic cohort Markov model was developed to simulate the EC prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALY), and the medical direct expenditure based on gender. JoinPoint Regression Program was used to calculate the average annual percentage change (AAPC) of EC prevalence and DALY rates, while the regression model was applied to analyze the changing trend of economic burden over time. Results: The predicted DALY rates per 100 000 people increased in both-sex (219.17 - 252.39) and males (302.89 – 384.31), while it decreased in females (131.21- 115.91). The years of life lost (YLL) accounted for the majority of DALYs. The AAPC were 0.8%(95% CI, 0.8%-0.9%), 1.4%(95% CI, 1.3%- 1.5%), and -0.7%(95% CI, -0.8%- -0.7%) in both-sex, males and females, respectively. The medical direct expenditure in both-sex, males, and females was predicted to increase by 165.35%, 194.04%, and 94.20%, respectively. Conclusions: EC still caused a severe burden on society. YLL was responsible for the majority of the DALYs, which highly suggesting the implementation of accurate prevention like screening and early diagnosis and treatment programs.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>The incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer are high, with 5.90 new cases and 5.48 deaths per 100 000 people worldwide in 2017. The prognosis of esophageal cancer is poor, with an overall 5‐year survival rate of less than 20%. Esophageal cancer in different geographical locations has different etiologies, and the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer continue to rise in some regions.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>We collected incidence and mortality data by age and gender for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017 in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database. And we used these data to calculate the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) to quantify trends in morbidity and mortality. Then we analyzed the gender‐ and age‐specific incidence and mortality in esophageal cancer to targeted high‐risk populations. Finally, we analyzed the correlation between the age‐standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and both the EAPC and social‐demographic index (SDI), and we calculated the Pearson correlation coefficient.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>We found that Malawi, East Asia, and high‐middle SDI regions had the highest age‐standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and ASMR, and the ASIR and ASMR in western Sub‐Saharan Africa showed an upward trend. Our study also showed that the incidence and mortality in esophageal cancer were highest in men and in the 70+ years age group, and they presented a decreasing trend in most regions, but the 15‐49 years age groups in Australasia, Caribbean, and Oceania and the 70+ years age group in High‐Income North America, Oceania and high‐SDI regions presented an increasing trend. There were significant negative associations between ASMR at baseline and EAPC and between ASMR and SDI in 2017.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>By analyzing the global distribution of incidence and mortality in esophageal cancer, trends over time, and gender and age specificity, we can understand the heterogeneity of its global trends. This heterogeneity can help us to identify high‐risk groupsand to provide clues for the exploration of the etiology and early prevention of the disease.</p></section>

Mortality burden and future projections of major risk factors for esophageal cancer in China from 1990 to 2019

Abstract:Objective: This study, based on Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data, aimed to report the long-term trend in mortality rates caused by risk factors for esophageal cancer (EC) in China from 1990 to 2019 and predict the burden of EC mortality caused by these risk factors over the next 15 years. Methods: We examined six risk factors that influenced EC mortality rates in China and their respective rankings. Furthermore, we analyzed the number of deaths and crude mortality rates (CMR) caused by these risk factors for both sexes and different age groups. Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and the number of deaths across all age groups were also analyzed. Finally, we utilized the Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort (BAPC) model to predict the trends in ASMR burden caused by these risk factors in the future. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the percentage changes in ASMR for EC caused by the six risk factors in China were as follows: smoking (- 33.4%), alcohol consumption (- 23.0%), low fruit intake (- 73.6%), low vegetable intake (- 96.0%), high Body Mass Index (BMI) (25.1%), and tobacco chewing (- 32.8%). In 2019, the top three risk factors contributing to EC ASMR in China were smoking, alcohol consumption, and high BMI. Overall, the ASMR for EC in China fluctuated and declined from 1990 to 2019. The most common risk factors for males were smoking and alcohol consumption, while low fruit intake and high BMI were the most common risk factors for females. The impact of these risk factors on EC mortality increased with age, except for the elderly population. BAPC analysis indicated that the influence of these risk factors on ASMR was expected to remain relatively stable in the next 15 years, suggesting a continued significant burden of EC. Conclusion: The projected burden of EC mortality in China was expected to continue increasing steadily over the next 15 years, highlighting the pressing need for disease control measures. To alleviate this burden, targeted prevention and control policies addressing risk factors for EC such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and high BMI are necessary.

Abstract:Considerable evidence has been provided these last years for the involvement of the GABAA receptor complex in memory processes. Compounds that enhance the action of GABA, such as benzodiazepines, impair memory processing. On the contrary, compounds that reduce the action of GABA, such as -CCM, pentylenetetrazol or picrotoxin, have the opposite action, that is : enhance memory processing. All these actions seem to focus mainly on the acquisition (learning) processes. Depending on the dose, the same compounds also have effects on anxiety and on seizuring. Benzodiaze-pines are well-known anxiolytic and anticonvulsant agents whereas compounds that reduce the action of GABA have been found to produce anxiogenic and convulsant actions. The GABAA receptor complex might thus be the location of a possible link between a pathological state (epilepsy) and two normal functions (anxiety and learning). This link is likely to involve common genetic pathways. In the normal subject, these data also emphasize the idea that normal memory processing involves a moderate level of anxiety.

Abstract:Objective Increasing evidence has shown that dietary behaviors are closely correlated with the carcinogenesis and progression of many types of cancer. However, few studies have assessed the global diet-related burden of cancer. This study aimed to estimate the pooled burdens and trends of five types of cancers attributable to dietary behaviors. Methods Data regarding cancer attributable to dietary behaviors were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019, including the death cases and age-standardized death rates, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) estimated according to diseases, age, sex, the socio-demographic index (SDI) and location. Results According to the Global Burden of Disease study 2019, five types of cancer were affected by dietary behaviors: colon and rectum cancer; tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer; stomach cancer; esophageal cancer and breast cancer. Unhealthy dietary behaviors for cancer caused a total of 605.4 thousand deaths and 13951.3 thousand DALYs globally. The burden of cancer attributable to dietary risks was higher for men than for women. The highest age-standardized death rates in 2019 were observed in southern Latin America, and the lowest rates were observed in North Africa and the Middle East. The greatest increases in the age-standardized death rates, from 1990 to 2019, were found in Western Sub-Saharan Africa, with the greatest decreases in Central Asia. The highest attributable proportions of death or DALYs were colon and rectum cancer. The greatest diet-related cancer burden was observed in regions with a high-middle SDI. Conclusion Global age-standardized deaths and DALYs rates attributable to diet-related cancer are considerable and cause a substantial burden. Successful population-wide initiatives targeting unhealthy dietary behaviors would reduce this burden.
