Abstract:Exercise fatigue can exert deleterious effects on the body. This study evaluated the effects and mechanisms by which Lonicera caerulea berry polyphenols extract (LCBP) improved the treadmill endurance of mice. Comparison was performed between the effects at 25 °C and low temperatures (-5 °C). Energy storage, product metabolism, and other biochemical indices were determined using vitamin C (VC) as a positive control. Co-immunoprecipitation was performed to detect the interaction between different proteins. Dietary supplementation with LCBP significantly prolonged the exhaustion time during treadmill exercise by 20.4% (25 °C) and 27.4% (-5 °C). LCBP significantly regulated the expression of antioxidant and inflammatory proteins, Bcl-2 /Bax apoptosis proteins, and the PKCα -NOx2 / Nox4 pathway proteins, and activated the expression of AMPK-PGC1α -NRF1-TFAM proteins in skeletal muscle mitochondria. The gene and protein expression of miRNA-133a/IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR in skeletal muscle cells was also activated. Molecular docking confirmed that the main components of LCBP such as cyanidin-3-glucoside, catechin, and chlorogenic acid, have strong binding affinity towards AMPKα. LCBP alleviates exercise fatigue in mice by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis of skeletal muscle cells, enhances mitochondrial biosynthesis and cell proliferation, reduces fatigue, and enhances performance. These effects are also significant in a low-temperature environment. Consequently, these results provide novel insights into the anti- fatigue roles of LCBP in exercise fatigue.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, lemon peel flavonoids (LPF) were administered to investigate its effect on the anti-fatigue and antioxidant capacity of mice that undergo exercise until exhaustion. LPF (88.36 min in LPFH group mice) significantly increased the exhaustion swimming time compare to the untreated mice (40.36 min), increased the liver glycogen and free fatty acid content in mice and reduce lactic acid and BUN content in a dose-dependent manner. As the concentration of lemon peel flavonoids increased, the serum creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase levels of mice gradually decreased. LPF increases superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels in mice and reduces malondialdehyde levels in a dose-dependent manner. And LPF raises hepatic tissue SOD, CAT activities and reduces skeletal muscle tissue iNOS, TNF-α levels of mice compared to the control group. LPF also enhanced the expression of copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), and CAT mRNA in mouse liver tissue. LPF also enhanced the expression of alanine/serine/cysteine/threonine transporter 1 (ASCT1) mRNA and attenuate the expression of syncytin-1, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in mouse skeletal muscle. According to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, it was found that LPF contains flavonoids such as rutin, astragalin, isomangiferin, naringin, and quercetin. Our experimental data show that LPF has good anti-fatigue effects and anti-oxidation ability. In summary, LPF has high prospects to be developed and added to nutritional supplements.

Abstract:Over the past 15 years, several algorithms have been proposed and used for closed-loop blood glucose regulation. Their intent is to artificially replace the normal responses of the pancreatic beta cell absent in insulin-dependent diabetes. All of these algorithms calculate insulin infusion rates on the basis of minute-by-minute measurements of whole blood glucose concentration and its calculated rate of rise or fall. In addition, various techniques are employed to compensate for measurement delay time and the presence of noise in the measured signals. The goal of these feedback systems is to normalize blood glucose in diabetes mellitus. Interestingly, some recently "optimized" versions provide only a near normalization of glycemia in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, a degree ofglycemic control which is not significantly different from intensified conventional insulin therapy.

Abstract:Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) with different molecular weights (LBP1, LBP2 and LBP3) of 92,441 Da, 7714 Da, and 3188 Da were used as stabilizers and capping agents to prepare uniformly dispersed selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), and determined the storage stability. In addition, the anti-fatigue activity of LBP-decorated SeNPs with the best stability (LBP1-SeNPs) was estimated by using forced swimming test. The results showed that LBP1-SeNPs exhibited smaller particle size and more excellent stability than those of LBP2-SeNPs and LBP3-SeNPs when the storage time was extended to 30 days, and the average particle size was maintained at about 105.4 nm. The exhaustion swimming time of all tested dose groups of LBP1-SeNPs was significantly longer than the control group (p < 0.05), and the high-dose group among them was even obviously longer than the positive group (p < 0.05). The results of glycogen, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood lactic acid (BLA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were further confirmed that LBP1-SeNPs could relieve fatigue by increasing the reserve of glycogen, enhancing antioxidant enzyme levels and regulating metabolic mechanism. These results demonstrated that LBP1-SeNPs could be developed as a potential anti-fatigue nutritional supplement.

Abstract:Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), is a major active ingredient Lycium barbarum (LB), which exhibits several beneficial effects through NF-κB, PI3K-Akt-mTOR, p38-MAPK, Wnt-β-catenin, PI3K-Akt-GSK-3β, and MyD88 signal pathway, including anti-oxidation, and anti-aging, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic, radiation, anti-tumor, and neuroprotection. Today, many researching papers are published on the LBP in physiology and pathology; however, the review of the LBP taking part in the signal transduction pathway in physiology and pathology is rear searched. Therefore, this research topic is a collection of reviews and original research articles that focus on the methods of the LBP extraction and its effects on the signal transduction pathway. The aim of this study is to provide theoretical evidence for in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of LBP in clinical clinical research studies.
Muscle Fatigue-Alleviating Effects of a Prescription Composed of Polygonati Rhizoma and Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma

Abstract:Long-term muscle fatigue is a major cause of injury. Drugs/nutrients from herbal medicines that prevent fatigue remain a major research focus. In China, a prescription composed of Polygonati Rhizoma and Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma has been commonly used as a herb and food nutrient, providing protection against fatigue in the clinic. To date, the mechanisms through which this prescription prevented fatigue are unknown. Here, we identified the effects of this prescription on muscle fatigue based on energy and oxidation regulation. Fatigue mouse models were produced through weight-bearing exhaustive swimming. Mice were intragastrically administered prescription extracts (1 and 2 g/kg) for four weeks. Changes in exhaustive swimming times, antifatigue biochemical indicators, oxidative status, and energy metabolism were investigated. The prescription prolonged the exhaustive swimming time of the mice. The content of lactic acid and blood urea nitrogen in the serum was also markedly reduced by the prescription. The content of liver glycogen and lactate dehydrogenase in the serum increased. The prescription also significantly reduced malondialdehyde levels and increased the levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. The levels of ATPase, complexes I and II in the mitochondria of hind-leg skeletal muscle, and serum creatine kinase also increased in response to the prescription. Our results indicated that the prescription could effectively alleviate muscle fatigue status by promoting energy metabolism and antioxidation ability. The prescription therefore represents a useful drug/nutrient strategy to alleviate muscle fatigue.
Polysaccharides from Polygonatum kingianum Collett & Hemsl ameliorated fatigue by regulating NRF2/HO-1/NQO1 and AMPK/PGC-1α/TFAM signaling pathways, and gut microbiota

Abstract:Polygonatum kingianum Coll & Hemsl is an important Chinese medicine used for enhancing physical function and anti-fatigue, and polysaccharides (PKPs) are considered as the main bioactive components. However, the mechanisms through which PKPs exert their anti-fatigue effects are not fully understood. This study aimed more comprehensively to explore the anti-fatigue mechanisms of PKPs, focusing on metabolism, protein expression, and gut flora, by using exhaustive swimming experiments in mice. Results showed a significant increase in the exhaustive swimming time of the mice treated with PKPs, especially in the high-dose group (200 mg/kg/day). Further studies showed that PKPs remarkably improves several fatigue-related physiological indices. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that PKPs increased antioxidant bacteria (e.g., g_norank_f_Muribaculaceae) and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), while reducing the abundance of harmful bacteria (e.g., g_Escherichia-Shigella and g_Helicobacter). PKPs also mitigated oxidative stress through activating the NRF2/HO-1 signaling pathway, and promoted energy metabolism by upregulating the expression of AMPK/PGC-1α/TFAM signaling pathway proteins. This research may offer theoretical support for incorporating PKPs as a novel dietary supplement in functional foods targeting anti-fatigue properties.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the possible therapeutic effects and active components of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) on a high fat diet-induced NASH rat model. We induced NASH in a rat model by voluntary oral feeding with a high-fat diet ad libitum for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, 1 mg/kg LBP was orally administered for another 4 weeks with a high-fat diet. When compared with NASH rats treated for 12 weeks, therapeutic LBP treatment for 4 weeks during 12 weeks of NASH induction showed ameliorative effects on: (1) increased body and wet liver weights; (2) insulin resistance and glucose metabolic dysfunction; (3) elevated level of serum aminotransferases; (4) fat accumulation in the liver and increased serum free fatty acid (FFA) level; (5) hepatic fibrosis; (6) hepatic oxidative stress; (7) hepatic inflammatory response; and (8) hepatic apoptosis. These improvements were partially through the modulation of transcription factor NF-κB, MAPK pathways and the autophagic process. In a palmitate acid-induced rat hepatocyte steatosis cell–based model, we also demonstrated that l-arabinose and β-carotene partially accounted for the beneficial effects of LBP on the hepatocytes. In conclusion, LBP possesses a variety of hepato-protective properties which make it a potent supplementary therapeutic agent against NASH in future clinical trials.

Abstract:[Objective] To assess the antifatigue effects and immunoactivity of the fruit of lycium barbaruml. [Methods] Mice were given oral doses of the fruit of lycium barbaruml of 0. 085g/kg,0, 17g/kg, 0. 5 g/kg, using distilled water as control. Swimming time, blood lactate, blood urea nitrogen and hepatic glycogen were measured. Indexes of cellular immunity. and humoral immunity were observed to detect the effects of the fruit of lycium barbaruml on immunoregulation in mice. [Re sults] Compared with the control group, in the dose group of 0. 5g/kg the swimming time of mice extended obviously, the hepatic glycogen increased obviously while the content of blood lactate, and blood urea nitrogen decreased significantly. Abstract:Anthocyanins from Lycium ruthenicum Murry (LRAs) were used to explore the anti-fatigue activities of LRAs at different concentrations in a mouse fatigue model. Eight biochemical indexes were determined in liver tissue, muscle tissue and serum. The results showed that the LRAs used in the experiment mainly contained delphinium, petunidin and malvidin. During 21 days of gavage, there was no significant difference in mouse body weight. The exercise time of the LRA-exposed mice increased. LRAs could increase serum glucose (Glu), liver/muscle glycogen and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduce the vitality of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), the levels of lactic acid (LD) and serum urea nitrogen (BUN). This study indicated that LRAs can enhance exercise endurance, increase sugar reserves, scavenge free radicals and improve metabolism, thereby increasing anti-fatigue activities.

Abstract:Aims In daily life, it is common for humans to be exposed to multiple phthalate esters (PAEs). However, there is limited research on the mechanisms and intervention of combined PAEs toxicity. This study aims to explore the cytotoxicity of combined PAEs and evaluate the potential of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) in mitigating the aforementioned toxicity. Main methods LBP (62.5, 125 and 250 μg/mL) were applied to intervene HepG2 cells treated with DEHP and DBP mixtures (50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 μg/mL). Western Blot and different kits were mainly performed in our study. Key findings DEHP and DBP mixtures suppressed the expression of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and activated MAPK pathway by increasing ROS. Combined DEHP and DBP exposure reduced ATP content and inhibited the mitochondrial biogenesis pathway in HepG2 cells through oxidative stress, which in turn caused cytotoxicity. LBP reduced oxidative stress and cell death induced by mixed plasticizers, upregulated Nrf2 levels and mitochondrial biogenesis pathway levels and inhibited MAPK pathway activation. Notably, after treating HepG2 cells with Nrf2-specific inhibitor (ML385, 0.5 μM), we found that the activation of Nrf2 played a crucial role on LBP intervention of DEHP and DBP induced HepG2 cytotoxicity. Significance This study not only enhances our understanding of the toxicological effects caused by combined PAEs exposure, but also has significant implications in devising strategies to mitigate the toxicological consequences of combined exposure to exogenous chemicals through the investigation of the role of LBP.

Isobolographic Analysis of the Antinociceptive Interaction between Ursolic Acid and Diclofenac or Tramadol in Mice

Abstract:Abstract It is considered that natural products used in folk medicine can potentiate the effect of drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacological interaction between ursolic acid, a triterpene isolated from herbal medicines to treat pain, and the analgesics diclofenac or tramadol. Individual dose-response curves of the antinociceptive effect of these compounds were built to calculate the ED50, as well as the pharmacological interaction, by using isobolographic analysis. All treatments decreased significantly and in a dose-dependent manner the writhing behavior with ED50 values of 103.50 ± 19.66, 20.54 ± 6.05, and 9.60 ± 1.69 mg/kg, for ursolic acid, diclofenac, and tramadol, respectively. An isobolographic analysis allowed the characterization of the pharmacological interaction produced by a fixed ratio combination of 1 : 1 and 1 : 3 of equi-effective doses of these compounds. Theoretical antinociceptive ED50 values of ursolic acid–diclofenac were 62.12 ± 10.28 and 41.43 ± 6.69 mg/kg, respectively, not statistically different from those obtained experimentally (44.52 ± 5.25 and 44.89 ± 49.05 mg/kg, respectively), reporting an additive interaction. Theoretical antinociceptive ED50 values of ursolic acid–tramadol (56.56 ± 9.87 and 33.08 ± 5.07 mg/kg, respectively) were significantly lower than those observed experimentally (138.36 ± 49.05 and 67.34 ± 18.98 mg/kg, respectively) reporting antagonism in this interaction. Antinociceptive response obtained from isobolograms in the writhing test was corroborated by using formalin test in mice. Adverse effects such as gastric damage in the ursolic acid–diclofenac combination did not increase in an additive form similarly as with antinociception. Conversely, sedative response was significantly increased in the ursolic acid–tramadol combination. As observed in the formalin test, the antagonism on the antinociceptive response between ursolic acid and tramadol (1 : 1) was not reverted in the presence of the opioid antagonist naltrexone (1 mg/kg, i. p.). These results provide evidence for a differential pharmacological interaction, in which ursolic acid does not interfere with the antinociceptive effect of diclofenac but antagonizes that obtained with tramadol in an independent opioid mechanism. Therefore, medicinal plants containing abundant presence of ursolic acid may also modify efficacy in the alternative combinations for the pain therapy.

Abstract:Two polysaccharides, BCP-1 and BCP-2, were obtained from Bupleurum chinense DC. by water extraction and ultrafiltration. BCP-1 (1.04 × 10 5 Da) and BCP-2 (2.14 × 10 4 Da) were composed of Mannose, Rhamnose, Glucose, Galactose, Arabinose, and Galacturonic acid in different proportions. They both contained oligogalacturonides in their main chain. Besides, the backbone of BCP-1 was composed of 4-β-Gal p and 4,6-β-Glc p , and branched at C4 of 4,6-β-Glc p . While BCP-2 contained a backbone of 3,5-α-Ara f residues with branches at C3. BCP-2 effectively extended the forced swimming time, improved the glycogen reserves and antioxidant system, decreased the levels of blood urea nitrogen, lactic acid, lactate dehydrogenase and creatinine kinase expression. It alleviated physical fatigue through regulating 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Nuclear Factor erythroid 2-Related Factor 2 (Nrf2) signalling pathway in skeletal muscles. This study demonstrated that BCP-2 exhibited more effective anti-fatigue activity than BCP-1 potentially associated with its primary and higher structures.

Abstract:Polygonati rhizoma (known as Huangjing in Chinese), an edible medicinal herb with homology of medicine and food, was also commonly used as food additives in Asian countries to provide many health benefits. Currently, the amelioration of fatigue induced by excessive exercise has become a health concern. In the present study, we studied the anti-fatigue effect of P. rhizoma polysaccharides (PRP) and also explored its potential mechanism by gut flora regulation. The molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, morphology, and FT-IR analysis of PRP were performed. Following intragastric administration of PRP, the exhaustive swimming model mice demonstrated increased swimming time, creatine kinase and malondialdehyde level, decreased lactic acid and blood urine nitrogen levels. Furthermore, the abundance of Akkermansia , Lactobacillus , and Faecalibacterium was remarkably enhanced, while the abundance of Streptococcus and Bacteroides was decreased, compared to model group. In summary, our findings offer compelling evidence supporting the beneficial effects of PRP on exercise-induced fatigue.

Abstract:Alleviation of fatigue has been emerging as a serious issue that requires urgent attention. Health professionals and sports physiologists have been looking for active natural products and synthetic compounds to overcome fatigue in humans. This study was designed to define the anti-fatigue property of Rubus parvifolius L. (RPL) by characterization of active constituents using a mouse forced swimming test model. Four RPL fractions with different polarities containing anti-fatigue activity were sequentially isolated from the n-butanol RPL extract, followed by elution of 50% ethanol-water fraction from D101 macroporous resin chromatography to obtain nigaichigoside F1, suavissimoside R1 and coreanoside F1. Active constituents of the 50% ethanol-water eluate of RPL were total saponins. The fractions were examined based on the effect on weight-loaded swimming capacity of mice. Serum levels of urea nitrogen (SUN), triglyceride fatty acids (TG), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactic acid (LA), ammonia and hepatic glycogen (HG) were also examined for potential mechanisms underlying the anti-fatigue effect of RPL extracts. During the experiment, two inflammatory markers, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in serum, were measured. We found that total saponins from RPL possess potent capabilities to alleviate mouse fatigue induced by forced swimming and that nigaichigoside F1 was responsible for the pharmacological effect. The underlying mechanisms include delays of SUN and LA accumulation, a decrease in TG level by increasing fat consumption, increases in HG and LDH so that lactic acid accumulation and ammonia in the muscle were reduced, and suppression of increased immune activation and inflammatory cytokine production. Our findings will be helpful for functional identification of novel anti-fatigue components from natural medicinal herbs.

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to establish the optimal extraction conditions of polysaccharides of Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp) and explore its anti-fatigue ability of exhaustive exercise rats. Methods Response surface methodology, based on Box-Behnken design, was used to optimize of ultrasonic extraction conditions of maca polysaccharides.Three independent variables (ratio of water to raw material, ultrasonic time, ultrasonic temperature) were taken into consideration. Subsequently, 80 male SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, negative control group, low dose group (ML, 130mg/Kg.bw/d), middle dose group (MM, 270mg/Kg.bw/d), high dose group (MH, 800mg/Kg.bw/d). After continuous oral gavage for 30 days, 10 rats were randomly selected from each group to measure the liver glycogen, and the remaining 40 were used to determine the exhaustion swimming time, biochemical indicators of exercise capacity in rats. Results 1. The best extracting method the ratio of material to liquid 1:22g/ml, ultrasonic time was 28min, ultrasonic temperature was 59 degrees centigrade, the extraction rate was 17.6754%. 2. Both middle and high doses of maca polysaccharides could significantly improve the swimming time of exhausted rats. 3. The maca polysaccharides group (ML, MM, MH) could effectively inhibit the growth of lactic acid in rats and accelerated the elimination of lactic acid. The effect of high dose MH group was the most obvious(P<0.05). 4. The content of BUN in swimming rats was reduced by different doses of maca polysaccharides. High dose of maca polysaccharides on reducing the content of MDA was the most significant(P<0.05). 6. Different doses of maca polysaccharides increased liver glycogen storage in rats, the high dose of maca polysaccharides to improve the effect of liver glycogen content of rats was the most significantly(P<0.05). Conclusions 1. The optimum extraction conditions of maca polysaccharides was as follows: the ratio of material to liquid was 1:22g/ml, the ultrasonic time was 30min, the ultrasonic temperature was 60, and the extraction rate was 17.6754%. 2. Maca polysaccharides could improve the antioxidant capacity of the body, improve energy reserves; prolonged exhaustive swimming time.

Abstract:Background: The molecular mechanisms regulating the therapeutic effects of plant-based ingredients on the exercise-induced fatigue (EIF) remain unclear. The therapeutic effects of both tea polyphenols (TP) and fruit extracts of Lycium ruthenicum (LR) on mouse model of EIF were investigated. Methods: The variations in the fatigue-related biochemical factors, i.e., lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), in mouse models of EIF treated with TP and LR were determined. The microRNAs involved in the therapeutic effects of TP and LR on the treatment of mice with EIF were identified using the next-generation sequencing technology. Results: Our results revealed that both TP and LR showed evident anti-inflammatory effect and reduced oxidative stress. In comparison with the control groups, the contents of LDH, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-2 were significantly decreased and the contents of SOD were significantly increased in the experimental groups treated with either TP or LR. A total of 23 microRNAs (21 upregulated and 2 downregulated) identified for the first time by the high-throughput RNA sequencing were involved in the molecular response to EIF in mice treated with TP and LR. The regulatory functions of these microRNAs in the pathogenesis of EIF in mice were further explored based on Gene Ontology (GO) annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses with a total of over 20,000–30,000 target genes annotated and 44 metabolic pathways enriched in the experimental groups based on GO and KEGG databases, respectively. Conclusion: Our study revealed the therapeutic effects of TP and LR and identified the microRNAs involved in the molecular mechanisms regulating the EIF in mice, providing strong experimental evidence to support further agricultural development of LR as well as the investigations and applications of TP and LR in the treatment of EIF in humans, including the professional athletes.

Abstract:Brassica rapa L. is an edible and medical plant in China used for treating various diseases, especially in the Tibet region. In this study, the chemical constituents of Brassica rapa L. extract (BE) was clarified by UHPLC-MS and anti-fatigue ability of BE was assessed through the behavior test and weight-loaded forced swimming test in mice. Then we determined several biochemical parameters related to fatigue to explore possible reasons. Results indicate that BE could significantly enhance exercise performance in mice, and there was a significant improvement in both grip-strength and the time on rota-rods. Meanwhile, BE showed significant anti-fatigue effects by decreasing the blood lactic acid (BLA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase (CK) levels and increasing the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Increases in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were observed and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels was regulated. Liver and muscle glycogen levels and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels were also significantly increased. Pearson correlation analysis indicates that fatigue-related indexes including metabolites and energy-related indexes were significantly correlated with antioxidant levels. In conclusion, BE possesses remarkable anti-fatigue activity, thereby shows great potential for improving exercise performance and alleviating physical fatigue and can be considered as a functional food supplement for further development.

Polysaccharides derived from natural edible and medicinal sources as agents targeting exercise-induced fatigue: A review

Abstract:Exercise-induced fatigue (EF) is a common occurrence during prolonged endurance and excessive exercise and is mainly caused by energy depletion, harmful metabolite accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation. EF usually leads to a reduction in initiating or maintaining spontaneous activities and muscle performance and ultimately results in a decrease in the quality of life of people who engage in physical work. Therefore, the interest in investigating EF-targeting agents with minimal side effects and good long-term efficacy has substantially increased. Natural edible and medicinal polysaccharides have shown positive anti-EF effects, but the relevant reviews are rare. This review comprehensively summarizes studies on natural polysaccharides from edible and medicinal sources that can relieve EF and improve physical performance from the past decade, focusing on their sources, monosaccharide compositions, anti-EF effects, and possible molecular mechanisms. Most of these anti-EF polysaccharides are heteropolysaccharides and are mainly composed of glucose, arabinose, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, and mannose. In EF animal models, the polysaccharides exert positive EF-alleviating effects through energy supply, metabolic regulation, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and gut microbiota remodeling. However, further studies are still needed to clarify the anti-EF effects of these polysaccharides on human beings. In summary, the present review expects to provide scientific data for the future research and development of natural polysaccharide-based anti-EF drugs, dietary supplements, and health-care products for specific fatigue groups.
