Abstract:BACKGROUND:It is not well clear how psychosocial factors like depressive symptoms, social support affect quality of life in rural elderly in China. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the association between social support and quality of life. METHODS:Cross-sectional data of 420 rural elderly were taken from four villages in Hangzhou City. They were interviewed with a demographic questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression, the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) for social support, and the short version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF) for quality of life. Mediation was examined by a nonparametric Bootstrapping method, controlling for socioeconomic variables. RESULTS:Poor quality of life was associated with low social support and increased depressive symptoms. A significant indirect effect of social support existed through depression in relation to quality of life (ab = 0.0213, 95% CI [0.0071, 0.0421]), accounting for 9.5% of the effect of social support on quality of life. Approximately 4.8% of the variance in QOL was attributable to the indirect effect of social support through depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS:Depressive symptoms mediated the impact of social support on quality of life among rural older adults.
Social Support and Depression Related to Older Adults’ Hypertension Control in Rural China

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to investigate association between social support and hypertension (HTN) control in rural China older adults, and to what extent depression mediates this relationship. The authors hypothesized that depression severity mediated the relationship between social support and HTN control. Methods: Data for the analyses were obtained from baseline data from a randomized controlled clinical trial of a collaborative depression care management intervention conducted in rural villages of China, with older adults with comorbid depression and HTN. Data included baseline assessments of 2,351 subjects aged 60 years and older, whose blood pressure and depression severity were measured using a calibrated manual sphygmomanometer and the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17), respectively. Social support was measured using the 20-item Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey. Results: Uncontrolled HTN was associated with older age (t[df = 2349] = 3.16; p < 0.01), higher HDRS-17 score (t[df = 1488] = 5.89; p < 0.001), and lower social support (t[df = 2349] = 5.37; p < 0.001). A significant indirect effect of social support via depression severity in relation to HTN control (a x b = -0.04[0.01]), bootstrap p = 0.0015, and 95% confidence interval (-0.07, -0.02), accounting for 11% of the effect of social support on HTN control. Conclusion: These findings imply that social support impacts HTN control directly and indirectly through depression. Intervention approaches such as primary care-based collaborative care models should address social support to achieve greater outcomes for depression and HTN management.
Association Between Social Health Status and Depressive Symptoms among Community-Dwelling Elderly Adults in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Mental disorders of the elderly population in China deserve attention. Social health is significantly associated with depression. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of depressive symptoms and to test the relationships between social health and depressive symptoms among a large sample of community-dwelling elderly adults. We conducted a cross-sectional study among community-dwelling adults aged 60 years or above in Zhejiang Province, China. Face-to-face interviews were used to complete a structured questionnaire for all participants. We used the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE) to evaluate social health status and used the short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale to evaluate depressive symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between social health status and depressive symptoms. Of the total of 3757 participants included, 1887 (50.23%) were female, and the mean±standard deviation (SD) age was (70.0±8.3) years. The rate of depressive symptoms was 25.92%. The social health score was higher in non-depressed participants than in depressed participants (raw score 50.7 vs. 48.3, P < 0.001). Participants with “moderate” or “good” social health had a significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms than those with “poor” social health (odds ratio (OR)=0.55, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.46-0.66 for moderate social health; OR=0.45, 95% CI: 0.35-0.60 for good social health). The association between social health and depressive symptoms was consistent across several subgroups. Social health is significantly inversely associated with depressive symptoms. The SHSE may serve as an efficient screener to identify those elderly adults with social health deficits, but systematic assessment to guide intervention merits further investigation.

Abstract:Background This study aimed to assess the association between social resources and dependency, and explored the effect of social support in modifying important risk factors for dependency among the elderly. Methods This was a population-based cross-sectional study. A total of 950 participants aged >= 60 years were selected using a complex multistage sampling design from 22 locations in China. All data were collected using questionnaires by face-to-face interviews. Dependency was assessed using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-II, and social resource status with the Chinese version of the Older American Resources and Services (OARS) questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between dependency and social resources. Analysis of covariance was performed to evaluate the effect of social support on modifications of important risk factors for dependency. Results A total of 913 participants were included in the analysis, and 10.3% of the males and 14.4% of the females were identified as in dependency. The results of logistic regression analysis showed a significant negative association between the levels of social resources and dependency. The odds ratio was 0.78 (95% confidence interval, 0.73-0.84) after adjusting for important confounding factors. The results of analysis of covariance showed differences in the mean dependency scores between different groups defined by chronic disease status and social support level. Conclusions Levels of social resources were negatively associated with dependency. Our results suggest that social support has both a direct effect on dependency and an indirect effect through modifying chronic disease status and individual income.
An exploratory study on material deprivation and loneliness among older adults in Hong Kong

Abstract:Background: Poverty, as a risk factor for loneliness, has been understudied, and there is a need to gain a better understanding of the relationship between poverty examined by material deprivation and loneliness among older adults in Hong Kong. It also aimed to explore the possible mediation and moderation effects of social support, social networks, neighborhood collective efficacy, and social engagement in the link between material deprivation and loneliness. Methods: 1696 Chinese older adults aged 60 years and above (Mage = 74.61; SD = 8.71) participated in a two-wave study. Older adults reported their loneliness level, material deprivation, perceived level of social support, social network, neighborhood collective efficacy, social engagement, and sociodemographic information. Logistic regression was conducted to examine the effect of material deprivation on loneliness, as well as the mediation and moderation models. Results: The results indicated that material deprived older adults reported a significantly higher level of loneliness 2 years later when controlling for demographic variables, health-related factors, and loneliness at baseline. We also found that engagement in cultural activities partially mediated the effect of material deprivation and loneliness. Furthermore, neighborhood collective efficacy and engagement in cultural activities were significant moderators that buffer the relationship between material deprivation and loneliness. Conclusions: Our results suggested the need to alleviate the negative impact of material deprivation on loneliness by developing interventions focused on promoting neighborhood collective efficacy and social engagement, which could be aimed at building meaningful bonds among Chinese older adults in Hong Kong.
Reciprocal relationship between social support and depressive symptoms among Chinese elderly

Abstract:For many Hong Kong Chinese elderly, depression is a quite common occurrence. This study examines the reciprocal relationship between social support and depressive symptoms. The data came from a longitudinal study of a representative community sample of the elderly population in Hong Kong. Using multiple regression models, the authors found that elderly persons who reported depressive symptoms more frequently were likely to receive higher levels of social support from family members living with elders, but lower levels of social support from friends three years later, even after controlling for socio-demographic and physical health status variables. In addition, elderly people who received more social support from family members not living with elders reported fewer depressive symptoms three years later.

Abstract:Abstract Background Little research describes the mechanisms underlying depressive symptoms and personal relative deprivation in Chinese populations. Methods In this study, the respondents were ( N = 914) residents of Beijing (17–59 years old) and robust multiple linear regressions were used to assess the main relationship between relative deprivation and depressive symptoms and social support as a potential moderator for that relationship. Results Individuals who reported higher personal relative deprivation had greater depressive symptoms than those who reported lower personal relative deprivation. Perceived social support buffered the relationship between depressive symptoms and personal relative deprivation. Conclusions The findings of this current study demonstrate the importance of relative deprivation for psychological strain and income in explaining how socioeconomic indices correlate with depressive symptoms. They also demonstrate the need to acknowledge the interaction of perceived social support and personal relative deprivation for influencing depression.

Abstract:Background Depressive symptoms has become an increasingly important public health issue, contributing to disability and disease burden around the world. Higher socioeconomic status (SES) has been found to be associated with lower prevalence of depression, but there are few studies about the older Chinese adults with long-term follow up and rigorous prospective design. Meanwhile, there is little conclusive evidence about the mechanisms through which SES influences the onset of depressive symptoms. Objective To prospectively examine the association of baseline socioeconomic factors with the risks of developing depressive symptoms during 7-year follow up in older Chinese population, and to study the mechanism by which SES impacts the prevalence of depressive symptoms. Methods A total of 5677 individuals over 45 years who participated in an ongoing nationally representative prospective cohort study, China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, were free from depressive symptoms at baseline, and completed 7-year follow-up were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale score. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the association of SES and the incidence of depressive symptoms in 2011 to 2018. Generalized structural equation model was used to analyze the mediation effects of social support on the relation between SES and depressive symptoms. Results During the 7-year follow-up, 2398 (42.2%) cases were identified as depressive symptoms. Compared with the lowest level of household income, participants with the highest level of household income had a 20% reduction in risk (95% CI, 0.70-0.92, P < 0.001). Participants who had junior high school or above education had a 41% lower risk of depressive disorders compared with illiterate participants (95% CI, 0.52-0.69, P < 0.001). The relationship between SES and depressive symptoms was partially mediated by the social support, where higher social support was negatively associated with depressive symptoms. The proportion of mediation effect was even larger for women compared with men. Conclusion Socioeconomic factors were independently associated with the development of depressive symptoms, and the relationship was partially mediated by social support. Social support could be an effective intervention to alleviate the negative effects of lower SES on mental health. Multiple-level policies should precisely target low-SES groups, and timely intervention to promote social support for this group should be used to reduce the influence of depression on individuals, family as well as the whole society.

Abstract:Abstract This research will present the association between physical frailty and depressive symptoms among U.S. Chinese older adults, and the extent to which social support moderates the relationship. Cross-sectional data were obtained from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago collected between 2011 and 2013 (N=3,157). Physical frailty was assessed by the Short Performance Physical Battery (range=0-15). A cut-off point of 6 was used to define physical frailty as suggested by prior research. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Social support was measured by a scale assessing positive support and negative strain from spouse, family members, and friends. Logistic regression analyses with interaction terms were conducted. In our sample, 1,682 (54.3%) had depressive symptoms, and 16.1% had physical frailty. Having physical frailty was positively associated with depressive symptoms (Odds Ratio [OR] 1.15, 1.11-1.18). Additionally, female gender (OR 1.39, 1.20-1.61), education (OR 1.03, 1.01-1.04), and chronic conditions (OR 1.18, 1.12-1.25) were positively associated with depressive symptoms. Social support (OR 0.85, 0.83-0.87) and children (OR=0.92, 0.87-.97) were negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, family members (OR 0.96, 0.94-0.98) and friends (OR 0.96, 0.94-0.98) has moderating effect on the relationship between physical frailty and depressive symptoms. However, the interaction between social support from spouse and physical frailty was not significant. The findings highlight the interconnections among physical frailty, social support, and depressive symptoms. Intervention strategies focusing on social support may have the potential to reduce depressive symptoms among frail U.S. Chinese older adults.
Financial strain and social support as moderators of the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms in older people

Abstract:This study investigated the moderating effect of financial strain or social support on depressive symptoms among older people living alone in Taiwan. Data were collected from the "Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA)," which included 1513 participants aged 65 and over, among them, 153 (10.1%) were living alone, while 1360 (89.9%) were living with others. Measurement tools included the Depression scale (CES-D), financial stress scale, social support scale, ADL scale, IADL scale, and stress scale, with Cronbach's α coefficients were 0.85, 0.78, 0.67, 0.91, 0.90, and 0.70 respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to examine the moderator effect. The findings revealed that (1) Financial strain was found to moderate the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms, acting as a promotive moderator among older men living alone. For older women, financial stress does not moderate the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms. However, financial strain was also identified as a significant factor associated with depressive symptoms among older women living alone. (2) Social support does not moderate effect on the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms in older men or older women. These results underscore the importance of considering financial stress in mental health policy development by government agencies. It is imperative to address the unique challenges faced by older individuals living alone, particularly in relation to financial strain, in order to promote their mental well-being.
Age-varying relationships between family support and depressive symptoms in Chinese community-dwelling older adults

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Adequate family support is an important factor in reducing the risk of depressive symptoms in older adults. We aimed to explore the age-varying relationships of family support and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults.METHODS: A total of 22,163 person-waves of older adults aged 60 to 85 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Family support was divided into instrumental family support and emotional family support. A Time-Varying Effects Model was utilized to analyze the age-varying relationships.RESULTS: There were age-varying relationships between family support and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults. Around age 70 was an important turning point of age. In instrumental family support, access to living care can reduce the risk of depressive symptoms in almost all age groups. At least medium-level financial support was required to be protective against depressive symptoms, and high-level financial support was necessary after age 70. In emotional family support, meeting children with high frequency was significantly associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms before age 70. Contacting children with low or medium frequency added the risk of depressive symptoms before age 70.LIMITATIONS: Limited sample size of participants aged 80 years and above, lack of assessment for expectations of family support.CONCLUSIONS: Providing the appropriate type and intensity of family support for older adults at a suitable age was encouraged. Future research should further verify and explicate the age-varying relationships longitudinally.

Association Between Social Support and Depression Help-Seeking Behaviors among U.S. Chinese Older Adults

Abstract:Objectives: Depression has become one major mental health concern among Asian older adults. Yet, less is known about the role of social support on depression help-seeking among this population. This study examined the association between positive (i.e., open up to, rely on) and negative (i.e., too many demands, criticism) social support and depression help-seeking among U.S. Chinese older adults. Methods: Data were derived from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (PINE). Study sample consisted of 994 U.S. Chinese older adults with depressive symptoms. Results: Stepwise logistic regression results indicated that greater positive social support was associated with increased likelihood of both formal and informal help-seeking behaviors, whereas negative support was not a significant predictor. Discussion: Findings highlight the key role of positive social support in influencing U.S. Chinese older adults’ depression help-seeking behaviors. Tailored strategies are recommended to better meet the mental health needs of this vulnerable population.
Risk factors for depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: The study aims to explore the risk factors for depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults. Methods: PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, EMbase, Google Scholar, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, and Wanfang data were searched for potentially relevant articles published before September 1st, 2019. Stata/IC 15 was used to perform a meta-analysis and subgroup analysis to compute the pooled odds ratio. Results: The retrieve strategy yielded 11 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The total sample size was 31528 across seven districts, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Patients with depression were included in the sample size. Fourteen risk factors were extracted for at least having two or more relative studies. The combined odds ratio ranged from 0.70 to 4.75. Female, poor self-perceived financial condition, single, average and poor self-perceived health status, diabetes, adverse life events, poor social support, two or more numbers of cardiovascular diseases, and functional disability are risk factors of depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults. Fair or good social support is a protective factor. Limitations: These findings may be somewhat limited by (i) quality of studies included, (ii) a finite number of studies met inclusion criteria. Conclusions: Despite the methodological limitations of the studies and this meta-analysis, average or poor selfperceived health status, functional disability, poor social support, poor self-perceived financial condition, negative life events, and diabetes appear to be significant risk factors for depressive symptoms among the aged population in China. Social support can mitigate depressive symptoms.
Attitudes Toward Aging, Social Support and Depression among Older Adults: Difference by Urban and Rural Areas in China.

Abstract:Background: The specific impacts of attitudes toward aging on depressive symptoms have not been widely reported in previous studies in China. Objectives: The aim is to examine the associations between attitudes toward aging, perceived social support, and depressive symptoms among older adults stratified by rural and urban dwelling. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional data including 7209 participants, among which 64.6% were urban adults and 35.4% were rural adults. Several multiple liner regression models were used to analysis the data. Three social support types were analyzed as moderators of the relationship between the attitudes toward aging and depressive symptoms. Results: Positive attitudes toward aging (beta=-0.139, P <0.001), negative attitudes toward aging (beta=0.284, P <0.001) were significantly associated with lower depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults. Support from family (beta= -0.087, P <0.001), friends (beta= -0.047, P <0.01) and the government (beta= -0.035, P <0.01) were all significantly associated with urban older adults ' levels of depressive symptoms. Only family support (beta= -0.109, P <0.001) was associated with lower depressive symptoms among rural older adults '. In addition, family support buffered the effect of negative attitudes toward aging on depressive symptoms for all the older adults, while the moderation effects of support from friends and government only worked for urban elderly. Limitations: A cross-sectional design is limited to establish causal associations. Conclusions: Addressing depression among older adults should focus on improving attitudes toward aging and expanding the availability of social support. Moreover, deeper reforms are needed to address inequalities be-tween urban and rural areas in China.
Association Between Perceived Social Support and Depressive Symptoms among Community-Dwelling Older Chinese Americans.

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined the association between social support and depressive symptoms among U.S. Chinese older adults. Methods: Data were from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (PINE) study. Independent variables were positive and negative perceived social support (PSS). Dependent variable was depressive symptoms. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: A total of participants were 3,157 Chinese older adults with the mean age of 72.8 years (range 60-105 years). After controlling for confounding factors, Chinese older adults with higher positive PSS were 12% (odds ratio [OR] = 0.88, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.85, 0.92]) and 18% (OR = 0.82, 95% CI = [0.79, 0.86]) less likely to report mild and moderate-severe depressive symptoms, respectively, compared to reporting minimal depressive symptoms; On the contrary, Chinese older adults with higher negative PSS were 34% (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = [1.24, 1.46]) and 38% (OR = 1.38, 95% CI = [1.26, 1.52]) more likely to report mild and moderate-severe depressive symptoms, respectively. Discussion: The study findings corroborate previous research that social support is significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Our findings reinforce the importance of developing strategies to utilize positive social support and limit negative support in practice for the depressed older adults. Further studies should be conducted to better understand the associations between different dimensions of social support and depression among U.S. Chinese older adults.
Effects of Social Support Provided by Disabled Older Adults to Others on Their Own Depressive Symptoms: A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract:Purpose: While previous studies have extensively examined the impact of receiving positive social support during social support interactions on depressive symptoms among older adults, adverse effects experienced, such as being rejected or ignored, are often overlooked. Moreover, there has been limited discussion on the effects of giving social support to others. Thus, this study investigates the impacts of social support given by disabled older adults to others on their own depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating role of receiving social support (both positive and negative aspects) and the moderating effect of the activity of daily living (ADL). Patients and methods: This cross-sectional, community-based study was conducted in Wenzhou and Jiaxing City, China, from September 2021 to September 2022, with a total of 255 disabled older adults meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were collected face-to-face using a structured questionnaire. The participants were asked to complete the Barthel Index Scale, the Chinese version of the Positive and Negative Social Exchange Scale, the Giving Social Support questionnaire, and the Short Form Chinese Geriatric Depression Scale to measure disability, receiving positive and negative social support, giving social support, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, mediation effect tests, and moderation effect tests were used to analyse the questionnaire data. Results: The social support provided by disabled older adults to others primarily involved companionship and care. The positive aspect of social support received was largely emotional support, while the negative aspect was mainly characterised by failure to obtain help and unsympathetic behaviour. Providing social support was found to be associated with a potential beneficial effect on depressive symptoms, linked to lower severity, with this effect fully mediated by receiving social support. Specifically, receiving emotional support accounted for 56.63% of the effect size, while failure to obtain help and unsympathetic behaviour contributed 21.55%, and rejection and neglect collectively accounted for 21.83%. Additionally, the effect was partially moderated by ADL, with older adults exhibiting lower ADL scores showing a greater benefit from both giving and receiving social support compared to those with higher ADL scores. Conclusion: It is imperative to recognise and encourage disabled older adults to provide social support to others, especially emotional support, while reducing negative feedback, such as neglect and unnecessary blame. This could alleviate their depressive symptoms and promote psycho-social well-being.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated how anticipated instrumental support sources and intergenerational support influence depressive symptoms in older Chinese adults. Methods: We employed binary logistic regression on data from 7,117 adults aged ≥60 in the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, controlling for gender, marital status, and self-rated health. Results: 38.89% of respondents exhibited depressive symptoms. Anticipated support from spouse and children, spouse only, children only, or other sources showed 52, 25, 46, and 40% lower odds of depression, respectively, compared with no anticipated support. Those providing financial support had 36% higher odds of depression than those without exchanges. However, those receiving financial support, receiving instrumental support, and receiving and providing financial and emotional support had 19, 14, 23, and 24% lower odds of depression. Conclusion: Different anticipated instrumental support sources and intergenerational support influenced depression odds in older adults, suggesting potential benefits in promoting such support systems.

Abstract:Background Many studies have shown that having noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) is strongly associated with depressive symptoms in elderly people; however, the mechanisms of this association are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate whether perceived social support (PSS) mediates the effect of NCDs on depressive symptoms and whether these relationships differ depending on where middle-aged and elderly people live. Methods The study population was from the psychology and behavior investigation of Chinese residents (PBICR). A total of 8732 people aged 45 and older were included in the hypothetical modulated model. Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to evaluate PSS and depressive symptoms. Results NCDs were positively related to depressive symptoms ( β = 0.81, p < 0.01) and indirectly mediated through PSS ( β = 0.08). Residency moderated the relationship between NCDs and PSS ( β = −0.16, p < 0.01) and between NCDs and depressive symptoms ( β = 0.29, p < 0.01). Specifically, the effect of NCDs on PSS and depressive symptoms was greater in rural middle-aged and older adults. Conclusions NCDs raise the risk of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese, with PSS playing a partially protective role. In addition, the area of residence moderated the connection between the number of NCDs and PSS, NCDs, and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract:Objective: This study examined the moderating effect of overall social support and the different types of social support on cognitive functioning in depressed older adults. We also investigated whether the moderating effect varied according to age. Methods: A total of 2,500 older adults (≥60 years old) from Shanghai, China were enrolled using a multistage cluster sampling method. Weighted linear regression and multiple linear regression was utilized to analyze the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function and to explore its differences in those aged 60–69, 70–79, and 80 years and above. Results: After adjusting for covariates, the results indicated that overall social support (β = 0.091, p = 0.043) and support utilization (β = 0.213, p < 0.001) moderated the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function. Support utilization reduced the possibility of the cognitive decline in depressed older adults aged 60–69 years (β = 0.310, p < 0.001) and 80 years and above (β = 0.199, p < 0.001), while objective support increased the possibility of cognitive decline in depressed older people aged 70–79 years (β = −0.189, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our findings highlight the buffering effects of support utilization on cognitive decline in depressed older adults. We suggest that age-specific measures should be taken when providing social support to depressed older adults in order to reduce the deterioration of cognitive function.
