Abstract:Monolayer (ML) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continue to attract research attention, and the heterojunctions formed by vertically stacking or laterally stitching two different TMDs, e.g., MoSe2 and WSe2, may have many interesting electronic and optical properties and thus are at the center stage of current research. Experimentally realizing such heterojunctions with desired interface morphologies and electronic properties is of great demand. In this work, we report a diverse interface structure in molecular-beam epitaxial WSe2-MoSe2 heterojunction. The corresponding electronic bands show type-II band alignment for both monolayer ML-ML and ML-bilayer lateral junctions irrespective of the presence or absence of step states. Interestingly, a strong anisotropy in lateral heterojunction formation is observed, where sharp interfaces are obtained only when WSe2 deposition precedes MoSe2. Reversing the deposition order leads to alloying of the two materials without a notable boundary. This is explained by a step segregation process as suggested by the first-principles total energy calculations.

Abstract:Designing van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of two-dimensional materials is an efficient way to realize amazing properties as well as open up opportunities for applications in solar energy conversion, nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices. The electronic structures and optical and photocatalytic properties of SiS, P and SiC van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are investigated by (hybrid) first-principles calculations. Both binding energy and thermal stability spectra calculations confirm the stability of these heterostructures. Similar to the corresponding parent monolayers, SiS-P (SiS-SiC) vdW heterostructures are found to be indirect type-II bandgap semiconductors. Furthermore, absorption spectra are calculated to understand the optical behavior of these systems, where the lowest energy transitions lie in the visible region. The valence and conduction band edges straddle the standard redox potentials of SiS, P and SiC vdW heterostructures, making them promising candidates for water splitting in acidic solution.
First-principles investigation of potential water-splitting photocatalysts and photovoltaic materials based on Janus transition-metal dichalcogenide/WSe2 heterostructures

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials have been shown to exhibit exotic properties that make them very interesting for both photo-catalytic and photo-voltaic applications. In this study, van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations were carried out on heterostructures of MoSSe/WSe2, WSSe/WSe2, and WSeTe/WSe2. The heterostructures are semiconductors with type II band alignments which are advantageous for electron-hole pair separation. The HSE06 level electronic band gap was found to be 1.093 eV, 1.427 eV and 1.603 eV for MoSSe/WSe2, WSSe/WSe2, and WSeTe/WSe2 respectively. We have considered eight high symmetry stacking patterns for each of the heterostructures, and among them the most stable stacking orders were ascertained based on the interlayer binding energies. The binding energies of the most stable MoSSe/WSe2, WSSe/WSe2, and WSeTe/WSe2 heterostructures were found to be -0.0604 eV, -0.1721 eV, and -0.3296 eV with an equilibrium interlayer space of 5.75 Å, 4.05 Å, and 4.76 Å respectively. The Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE) was found to be 20, 19.98, and 18.24 percent for the MoSSe/WSe2, WSSe/WSe2, and WSeTe/WSe2 heterostructures, respectively. The results show that they can serve as suitable photovoltaic materials with high efficiency, thus, opening the possibilities of developing solar cells based on 2D Janus/TMD heterostructures. The most stable heterostructures are also tested for photocatalytic water splitting applications and WSeTe/WSe2 shows excellent photocatalytic activity by being active for full water splitting at pH = 7 and pH = 14, the MoSSe/WSe2 heterostructure is good for the oxygen evolution reaction and WSSe/WSe2 is active for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Recent investigations have revealed that some transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2 and WS2, are excellent candidates for high-efficiency photocatalysts for water splitting. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers greatly hinders their practical application. A promising solution involves developing novel TMDs-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with type-II band alignment. In this study, we used first-principles calculations to design two new heterostructures—MoS2/BSe and WS2/BSe—as potential photocatalysts and investigated their structures, stabilities, and electronic and optical properties. We found that both MoS2/BSe and WS2/BSe vdW heterostructures are stable and possess inherent type-II band alignment, which significantly suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, their band edges straddle the redox potential of water, making them suitable for use as photocatalysts in water splitting. They also possess significant built-in electric fields, relatively high carrier mobilities, and excellent abilities to absorb sunlight. Our theoretical findings should shed light on the design of novel TMD-based photocatalysts for water splitting and provide useful guidelines for future experiments.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials viz. transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and transition metal oxides (TMO) offer a platform that allows creation of heterostructures with a variety of properties. The optoelectronic industry has observed an upheaval in the research arena of MoS$_2$ based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (HTSs) and Janus structures. Therefore, interest towards these structures are backed by the selectivity in terms of electronic and optical properties. The present study investigates the photocatalytic ability of bilayer, MoS$_2$ and Janus (MoSSe) based vdW HTSs viz. MoS$_2$/TMO, MoS$_2$/TMD, MoSSe/TMO and MoSSe/TMD, by first-principles based approach under the framework of (hybrid) density functional theory (DFT) and manybody perturbation theory (GW approximation). We have considered HfS$_2$, ZrS$_2$, TiS$_2$, WS$_2$ and HfO$_2$, T-SnO$_2$, T-PtO$_2$ from the family of TMD and TMO, respectively. The photocatalytic properties of these vdW HTSs are thoroughly investigated and compared with the respective individual monolayers by visualizing their band edge alignment, electron-hole recombination rate and optical properties. Strikingly we observe that, despite most of the individual monolayers do not perform optimally as a photocatalyst, type II band edge alignment is noticed to vdW HTSs and they appear to be efficient for photocatalysis via Z-scheme. Moreover, these HTSs have also shown promising optical response in the visible region. Finally on computing electron-hole recombination rate we find MoSSe/HfS$_2$, MoSSe/TiS$_2$, MoS$_2$/T-SnO$_2$, MoS$_2$/ZrS$_2$ and MoSSe/ZrS$_2$ are probable, most efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Continuous recognition memory tests: are the assumptions of the theory of signal detection met?

Abstract:Two continuous recognition memory tests were administered to 20 males and 20 females using the confidence rating procedure to determine if the underlying assumptions of the theory of signal detection (TSD) are met by these tasks. Z-score transformed ROC curves proved to be straight lines parallel to the positive diagonal of the ROC graph. These findings suggest that the distributions of familiarity for old and new stimuli are normal and of equal variance for the Continuous Recognition Memory and Continuous Visual Memory Tests. TSD interpretation of test data appears to be justified.
First-Principles Study on Janus-Structured Sc2CX2/Sc2CY2 (X, Y = F, Cl, Br) Heterostructures for Solar Energy Conversion

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures have good application prospects in solar energy conversion due to their excellent optoelectronic performance. In this work, the electronic structures of Sc2CF2/Sc2CCl2, Sc2CF2/Sc2CBr2, and Sc2CCl2/Sc2CBr2 heterostructures, as well as their properties in photocatalysis and photovoltaics, have been comprehensively studied using the first-principles method. Firstly, both of the three thermodynamically and dynamically stable heterostructures are found to have type-II band alignment with band gap values of 0.58 eV, 0.78 eV, and 1.35 eV. Meanwhile, the photogenerated carriers in Sc2CF2/Sc2CCl2 and Sc2CF2/Sc2CBr2 heterostructures are predicated to follow the direct Z-scheme path, enabling their abilities for water splitting. As for the Sc2CCl2/Sc2CBr2 heterostructure, its photovoltaic conversion efficiency is estimated to be 20.78%. Significantly, the light absorption coefficients of Sc2CF2/Sc2CCl2, Sc2CF2/Sc2CBr2, and Sc2CCl2/Sc2CBr2 heterostructures are enhanced more than those of the corresponding monolayers. Moreover, biaxial strains have been observed to considerably tune the aforementioned properties of heterostructures. All the theoretical results presented in this work demonstrate the application potential of Sc2CX2/Sc2CY2 (X, Y = F, Cl, Br) heterostructures in photocatalysis and photovoltaics.

Abstract:Stacking engineering is a popular method to tune the performance of two-dimensional materials for advanced applications. In this work, Jansu MoSSe and WSSe monolayers are constructed as a van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructure by different stacking configurations. Using first-principle calculations, all the relaxed stacking configurations of the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure present semiconductor properties while the direct type-II band structure can be obtained. Importantly, the Z-scheme charge transfer mode also can be addressed by band alignment, which shows the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure is an efficient potential photocatalyst for water splitting. In addition, the built-in electric field of the MoSSe/WSSe vdWs heterostructure can be enhanced by the S-Se interface due to further asymmetric structures, which also results in considerable charge transfer comparing with the MoSSe/WSSe vdWs heterostructure built by the S-S interface. Furthermore, the excellent optical performances of the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure with different stacking configurations are obtained. Our results provide a theoretical guidance for the design and control of the two-dimensional heterostructure as photocatalysts through structural stacking.

Abstract:The two-dimensional MoSSe based heterostructures has attracted much attention due to its excellent physical and chemical properties. In this research, first principles study were used to investigate the stability, electronic structure and optical behavior of g-SiC/MoSSe vdW heterostructures, as well as the photocatalytic performance of the overall water splitting. This research found that the g-SiC/MoSSe vdW heterostructures was an indirect band gap semiconductor with a type II band alignment which indicated the reduction and oxidation reactions of water splitting were carried out in different layers. In addition, the 6.23 eV potential drop generated by the charges transfer in the interface region can effectively inhibit the photo-generated e-/h+ recombination which is beneficial to improve the carriers mobility and the existence lifetime. Significantly, the g-SiC/MoSSe vdW heterostructures has a relatively high optical absorption in the visible light region which can effectively utilize the solar energy comparing to g-SiC and MoSSe monolayers. At different pH of medium, the photocatalytic ability of g-SiC/MoSSe vdW heterostructures all satisfy the splitting of water. These fascinating properties indicate that g-SiC/MoSSe vdW heterostructures can be used as an efficient photocatalysts and have extraordinary application prospects.

Abstract:Converting solar energy into chemical energy by splitting water is a promising method to generate a sustainable and renewable solution without detrimental environmental impact. The two-dimensional semiconductors serve as potential catalysts in this regard, and here we combine Janus transition-metal dichalcogenides (MoXY,X/Y=S,Se,Te) and graphitic carbon nitride in a van der Waals heterostructure. Within the first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic, optical and excitonic properties that determine the photocatalytic activity. Due to the internal electric field, the photogenerated electrons and holes are separated in the MoXY layers, and also generates high overpotentials for the redox reactions. The high optical absorptions span throughout the entire visible and near ultraviolet regime in these heterostructure nanocomposites. Further, the lower exciton binding, calculated within the two-dimensional hydrogenic model, indicates efficient charge separation. The maximum solar-to-hydrogen efficiency using the entire solar spectrum reaches up to 16.5% in these heterostructures. The present results indicate these heterostructures to be excellent candidate materials for photocatalytic applications and also demonstrate the enormous possibilities in two-dimensional heterostructures that should attract considerable theoretical and experimental attention in future.

Abstract:By using systematic first‐principles calculations, the stability and electronic properties of 2D Janus transition metal dichalcogenides with intrinsic electric field for photocatalytic applications are investigated. A total of 18 MXY (M = V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W; X/Y = S, Se, Te) have been considered, in which nine structures are found to be stable, as indicated by phonon spectra and molecular dynamics simulations. By comparing the type and size of bandgap, carrier mobility of electrons/holes, and vacuum level difference of X/Y surfaces, the following three candidates are successfully obtained: CrSSe, MoSSe, and WSSe, which show promising photocatalytic activity toward water splitting. In particular, the computed conduction band edge of one surface is much higher than the redox potential of H+/H2, and valence band edge of the other surface is significantly lower than the oxidation potential of H2O/O2, which is beneficial for maximized performance. As a direct‐bandgap semiconductor, 2D CrSSe exhibits excellent visible‐infrared light absorption capability, and the predicted solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency reaches an unprecedented level of 30%. These results not only provide physical insights into the design of novel 2D structures, but also shed light on their future implementation for photocatalytic water splitting and other important energy‐related applications.
Geometric, electronic, and optical properties of MoS 2 /WSSe van der Waals heterojunctions: a first-principles study

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions constructed by vertical stacking two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides hold exciting promise in realizing future atomically thin electronic and optoelectronic devices. Recently, a Janus WSSe structure has been successfully synthesized by using chemical vapor deposition, selective epitaxy atomic replacement, and pulsed laser deposition methods. Herein, based on first-principles calculations, we introduce the structures and performances of MoS2/WSSe vdW heterojunctions with different interfaces and stacking modes. The vdW heterojunctions possess indirect band gaps for S–S interfaces, while direct band gaps for Se–S interfaces. Besides, the potential drop indicates an efficient separation of photogenerated charges. Interestingly, the opposite built-in electric fields formed in the vdW heterojunctions with a S–S interface and a Se–S interface suggest different charge transfer paths, which would motivate further theoretical and experimental investigations on charge transfer dynamics. Moreover, the electronic property is adjustable by applying external in-plane strains, accomplishing with indirect to direct bandgap transition and semiconductor to metal transition. The findings are helpful for the design of multi-functional high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices based on the MoS2/WSSe vdW heterojunctions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prepared an innovative heterogeneous structure by stacking monolayers of Sc 2 CF 2 on isolated WSSe. Base on the first principles and density functional theory, the interface stability, electronic properties, optical properties of the two-dimensional Sc 2 CF 2 /WSSe heterostructure are discussed by calculation and further verification. The results show that the heterostructure has a indirect band gap of 1.00 eV (GGA-PBE), and has a direct-Z band arrangement profitable for water splitting. The heterostructure shows greater capability of the segregation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs directly. The optical properties was studied for further consideration. Moreover the associated edge positions also satisfy the thermodynamic requirements of water spitting when pH = 7. The heterostructure of Sc 2 CF 2 /WSSe shows reinforced optical properties relative to monolayers and feasibility in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Chemotaxis plays an important role in cancer cell metastasis. In this study, we showed that epidermal growth factor (EGF) was a more potent chemoattractant than chemokine SDF-1alpha/CXCL12 for human breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231. Different inhibitors were used to evaluate the involvement of 12 protein kinase C (PKC) isotypes in the chemotactic signaling pathway. Chelerythrine chloride, an inhibitor of all PKC isotypes, blocked chemotaxis, whereas inhibitors of classic and novel PKC, such as Gö6976, Gö6850, or calphostin C, only impaired EGF-induced chemotaxis to a minor extent by not greater-than32% inhibition. These data suggested that atypical PKC were involved. The ligand-induced actin polymerization and cell adhesion were also similarly dependent on atypical PKC. Immunofluorescent staining showed an EGF-induced, LY294002-sensitive translocation of PKCzeta from the cytosol to the plasma membrane, indicating that EGF was capable of activating PKCzeta, probably via phosphoinositide 3 kinases. A myristoylated PKCzeta pseudosubstrate blocked the chemotaxis with an IC(50) of 20 mumol/L. To expand our investigation, we further showed that in MCF-7 and T47D, two additional human breast cancer cell lines, EGF-activated PKCzeta and the PKCzeta pseudosubstrate, inhibited chemotaxis. Taken together, our data suggest that PKCzeta is an essential component of the EGF-stimulated chemotactic signaling pathway in human breast cancer cells.
First principles study of electronic properties and optoelectronic performance of type-II SiS/BSe heterostructure

Abstract:The construction of van der Waals heterostructures are extensively studied for designing new devices for potential applications in nanotechnology and renewable energy. In this work, we perform the first-principles calculations to explore the electronic structure, optical properties and photocatalytic performance of SiS/BSe heterostructure. The SiS/BSe heterostructure is energetically and thermally stable at the ground state. The generation of SiS/BSe heterostructure gives rise to a reduction in the band gap compared to the constituent monolayers, suggesting that the optical absorption of such heterostructure can be enlarged. Furthermore, the formation of SiS/BSe heterostructure leads to generation of type-II band alignment, which makes the heterostructure promising candidate for photogenerated charge separation and light detection purposes. The absorption spectrum demonstrates broadening and red-shift in SiS/BSe heterostructure. Additionally, the SiS/BSe heterostructure possesses suitable band edges and straddle the standard redox potentials, thus making it potential candidate for photocatalytic water dissociation under irradiation of solar light. These findings pave the way for practical applications of the SiS/BSe heterostructure for optoelectonics and photocatalysis applications.

Abstract:In this paper, structural, electronic properties, optical spectra, stability, as well as the quantum efficiency of bulk, monolayer and two different stacking heterostructure configurations (XY 2 /XY 2 ) of dichalcogenide compounds XY 2 (where X = Mo or W and Y = S or Se) were performed using density functional technique. Our findings reveal the strong chemical bonds and high interlayer banding energy for MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructure of configuration-2, which confirms its stability and its feasibility for synthesizing. Besides, the elastic stiffness coefficients demonstrate all studied heterostructures are mechanically stable at ambient pressure, this means that the studied heterostructures are harder to separate their components, making them more durable and less reactive under certain conditions, especially MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructure-configuration 2. Otherwise, the electronic band structure highlights an indirect semiconductor behavior for bulk XY 2. In contrast, a strong ionic bonding between the chalcogen and metal atoms leads to the electrons confinement in the direction perpendicular to the plane revealing direct semiconductor behavior for monolayers XY 2 at Γ point. Besides, after combining two monolayers with different work functions the holes and electrons are accumulated in different layers, therefore indirect excitons have been observed for XY 2 /XY 2 heterostructures (Γ → K). Furthermore, due to the presence of the type-II band alignment, the optical absorbance spectra proves that the absorbance is enhanced along both x and z directions for all investigated heterostructures. In addition, the MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructure of configuration-2, has about 65% of photons converted into usable electrical power, while 35% of photons are lost as heat and/or reflected. Finely, its high stability, its suitable forbidden band, its high visible light absorption, as well as its high quantum efficiency make the 2D Van der Waals MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructure-configuration-2 as new potential candidate for upcoming nano-electronic, photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) ternary monolayer MSi2N4 (M = Mo, W) was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. However, monolayer MSi2N4 (M = Mo, W) has an indirect bandgap, which seriously hinders its application in optoelectronic devices. Herein, we propose two MSi2N4/InS (M = Mo, W) van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) possessing type-II band alignments by first-principles. Our results indicate that these vdWHs achieve an indirect-to-direct bandgap transition and exhibit fascinating optical absorption spectra in the range of visible light. Moreover, the light absorption efficiencies of both vdWHs are significantly strengthened, and the intrinsic electric field of vdWHs can effectively promote the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. In particular, the most significant electron mobility of MSi2N4/InS (M = Mo, W) vdWHs is up to 6.6 × 103 cm2 V−1 s−1, demonstrating their considerable potential for optoelectronic device applications. Notably, MSi2N4/InS (M = Mo, W) vdWHs can facilitate water splitting due to their suitable band edges. Therefore, our findings demonstrate two 2D MSi2N4/InS (M = Mo, W) type-II vdWHs with fascinating potentials for photocatalysis.

First-principles Calculations of MoSeTe/WSeTe Bilayers: Stability, Phonons, Electronic Band Offsets, and Rashba Splitting

Abstract:Janus materials have attracted much interest due to their intrinsic electric dipole moment and Rashba band splitting. We show that, by building bilayers of MoSeTe and WSeTe with different chalcogen atom sequences and different stacking patterns, one can modulate the net dipole moment strength and the Rashba effect, as well as the band alignment of the MoSeTe/WSeTe bilayer. Type-II band alignment is found which can be exploited to create long-lived interlayer excitons. Moreover, it is shown that the atomic sequence and stacking play pivotal roles in the interlayer distance of MoSeTe/WSeTe and thus its electronic structure and vibrational, especially low-frequency, characteristics. The long-range dispersion forces between atoms are treated with a conventional additive pairwise, as well as a many-body-dispersion method. It is shown that under the many-body dispersion method, more clear and rational thermodynamic trends of bilayer stacking are realized and interface distances are estimated more accurately. Vibrational spectra of the bilayers are calculated using first-principles phonon calculations and the fingerprints of monolayer attraction and repulsion are identified. An anti-correlation between distance and the shearing mode frequency of the rigid monolayers is demonstrated which agrees well with experimental findings. The results suggest that the judicious selection of the atomic sequence and stacking helps to widen the scope of the low-dimensional materials by adding or enhancing properties for specific applications, e.g. for spintronics or valleytronics devices.

Abstract:Construction of a van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction is a promising approach with effective separation of charge carriers for intensified solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency. A trilayer MoS2/ZnO/WS2 heterojunction with two different configurations is constructed and their electronic and photocatalytic properties are investigated in detail. The heterojunction exhibited a type-II band alignment, where the ZnO monolayer is placed to the valence band maxima (VBM) position and MoS2 is contributed at the conduction band minima (CBM) of the heterojunction. In addition, trilayer heterojunction showed a high electron mobility of 454.12 cm2 V–1 s–1 and optical absorption intensity of 8.54 × 105 cm–1 in the visible region, which is much more significant than the individual monolayers. Interestingly, the MoS2/ZnO/WS2 heterojunction exhibited the maximum STH efficiency of 16.83%, which is much higher than the MoS2, ZnO, and WS2 monolayers and MoS2/ZnO and MoS2/WS2 heterostructures. S top acts as a brilliant adsorption site for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The theoretical overpotential value of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is 1.45 eV, much smaller than that of the MoS2 monolayer. The present study suggests that the construction of vdW vertical stacking of the trilayer heterojunction significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity with high carrier mobility, STH efficiency, and optical absorption in the visible region for overall water-splitting applications.
