Abstract:The ability of 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazoles to undergo proton transfer processes and to exist in N-hydroxy and N-oxide tautomeric forms can be used in coordination chemistry for the design of ESIPT-capable complexes. A series of ESIPT-capable zinc(II) complexes [Zn(HL)Hal2] (Hal = Cl, Br, I) with a rationally designed ESIPT-ligand 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-2,4-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HL) featuring spatially separated metal binding and ESIPT sites have been synthesized and characterized. Crystals of these compounds consist of a mixture of two isomers of [Zn(HL)Hal2]. Only a major isomer has a short intramolecular hydrogen bond O-H⋯N as a pre-requisite for ESIPT. In the solid state, the complexes [Zn(HL)Hal2] demonstrate temperature- and excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence in the cyan region due to the interplay of two intraligand fluorescence channels with excited state lifetimes spanning from 0.2 to 4.3 ns. The coordination of HL by Zn2+ ions results in an increase in the photoluminescence efficiency, and the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the complexes reach 12% at λex = 300 nm and 27% at λex = 400 nm in comparison with the PLQY of free HL of ca. 2%. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that N-hydroxy-N-oxide phototautomerization is both thermodynamically and kinetically favourable in the S1 state for [Zn(HL)Hal2]. The proton transfer induces considerable geometrical reorganizations and therefore results in large Stokes shifts of ca. 230 nm. In contrast, auxiliary ESIPT-incapable complexes [ZnL2][Zn(OAc)2]2·2H2O and [ZnL2][ZnCl2]2·4H2O with the deprotonated ligand exhibit excitation wavelength independent emission in the violet region with the Stokes shift reduced to ca. 130 nm.

Abstract:ESIPT-based materials (ESIPT = Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer) find diverse applications in optoelectronics and biomedicine owing to the peculiarities of their luminescence properties. Here, an ESIPT-capable compound 2-(3,5-dimethyl-1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidine ( HL 4,2,Me ) featuring a short O–H⋅⋅⋅N intramolecular hydrogen bond and two N,N-sites for metal binding has been synthesized. HL 4,2,Me is the first reported molecule which can act as an ESIPT molecular switch triggered by metal ion coordination without its deprotonation. Drastic changes in the HL 4,2,Me conformation in the [Zn(HL 4,2,Me )X 2 ] (X = Cl, Br, I) complexes significantly alter the photoluminescence response compared to the free ligand. In the solid state, HL 4,2,Me exhibits barrierless ESIPT and large Stokes-shifted yellow-orange emission due to the interplay of anti-Kasha S 2 → S 0 fluorescence and Kasha-like T 1 → S 0 phosphorescence radiative channels. The violation of Kasha's rule for HL 4,2,Me is justified by an extraordinarily large S 2 – S 1 energy gap ( ca. 0.9 eV), slowing down the rate of S 2 → S 1 internal conversion. The photoluminescence behavior of the ESIPT–incapable zinc(II) coordination compounds strongly depends on the halide anion: the chlorido complex exhibits only fluorescence, the bromido complex displays a minor phosphorescence channel in addition to a major fluorescence channel, while the iodido complex exhibits predominantly phosphorescence. As a result, the emission color of the [Zn(HL 4,2,Me )X 2 ] complexes changes gradually from blue for X = Cl to orange for X = I, providing a platform for the fine-tuning of emission by the halide anion.

Abstract:In this work, the coexistence of In(III) and K(I) induces a rapid crystal growth of single crystals of heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [In0.5K(3-qlc)Cl-1.5(H2O)(0.5)](2n) (1) and [InK(ox)(2)-(H2O)(4)](n) (2) (3-Hqlc = quinoline-3-carboxylic acid; H(2)ox = oxalic acid). Remarkably, with the help of achiral 3-Hqlc, compound 1 represents the chiral interpenetrating p-block heterometallic MOFs with helical chain along the 43 screw axis, while compound 2 possesses a highly symmetric (4,4,4)-connected topology network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(2).8(3).10))(4(2).8(4)). Consideration of two different organic ligands viz. 3-Hqlc and H(2)ox constructed heterometallic MOFs with different geometrical dimensions of unit cells, their influences on luminescence arid photovoltaic properties are studied. Compounds 1 and 2 show tunable luminescence from blue to yellow and white by varying the temperature in the solid state. Encouraged by the UV visible absorption and HOMO-LUMO energy states matched for sensitizing TiO2, the two compounds are employed in combination with N719 in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to compensate for absorption in the region of ultraviolet and blue-violet. Under optimized conditions, the DSSCs devices using cosensitizers of 1/N719 and 2/N719 display an overall conversion efficiency of 8.07% and 7.42%, which is 22.09% and 12.25% higher than that of a device solely sensitized by N719 (6.61%). Consequently, both of the two compounds could serve as excellent photosensitizers and application in luminescence sensors and DSSCs.
Turning ON/OFF the fluorescence of the ESIPT state by changing the hydrogen bond distance and orientation in quinoline–pyrazole derivatives

Abstract:The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process is sometimes non-fluorescent owing to interference from other non-radiative processes. Thus, effectively lighting up the “invisible” ESIPT state is crucial. In this work, quinoline–pyrazole (QP) derivatives containing fused and non-fused aromatic frameworks (QP1, QP2, and QP3) were used as model compounds to explore the effects of hydrogen bond (HB) distance and orientation on ESIPT. Analysis of the electronic structures and HB interactions revealed that the HB in fused six-membered ring QP2 was significantly enhanced upon photoexcitation, which making the ESIPT process occur more readily. In contrast, the ESIPT process was less favorable for the more flexible non-fused six-membered ring in QP3 owing to HB weakening in the S1 state. Furthermore, analysis of the potential energy curves indicated that the ESIPT fluorescence of QP1 and QP3 was quenched by intersystem crossing. Remarkably, the dark ESIPT state was successfully illuminated in QP2. Our findings demonstrate that targeted modifications to the molecular structure in the region of HBs can serve as a control knob to effectively regulate the ESIPT fluorescence, providing a route toward potential photoelectric applications.

Abstract:1H-Imidazole derivatives establish one of the iconic classes of ESIPT-capable compounds (ESIPT = excited state intramolecular proton transfer). This work presents the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (LOH,OH) as the first example of ESIPT-capable imidazole derivatives wherein the imidazole moiety simultaneously acts as a proton acceptor and a proton donor. The reaction of LOH,OH with chloroacetone leads to the selective reduction of the imidazolic OH group (whereas the phenolic OH group remains unaffected) and to the isolation of 4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (LH,OH), a monohydroxy congener of LOH,OH. Both LOH,OH and LH,OH demonstrate luminescence in the solid state. The number of OH···N proton transfer sites in these compounds (one for LH,OH and two for LOH,OH) strongly affects the luminescence mechanism and color of the emission: LH,OH emits in the light green region, whereas LOH,OH luminesces in the orange region. According to joint experimental and theoretical studies, the main emission pathway of both compounds is associated with T1 → S0 phosphorescence and not related to ESIPT. At the same time, LOH,OH also exhibits S1 → S0 fluorescence associated with ESIPT with one proton transferred from the hydroxyimidazole moiety to the pyridine moiety, which is not possible for LH,OH due to the absence of the hydroxy group in the imidazole moiety.

Abstract:Most luminophores often suffer from the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) or fluorescence disappearance in dilute solution. It is significant to bridge the gap between ACQ and AIE. In this work, a facile but effective strategy was proposed for the fabrication of always-on luminophores based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism, and six luminophores emitting bright fluorescence in solution, aggregation and solid states were synthesized from 5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyisophthalaldehyde. All these ESIPT systems show only keto emission owing to their congested structures which block the breakage of intramolecular hydrogen bond (O–H•••N) by solvation, and subsequently make enol emission impossible. Three of these luminophores are prone to convert into the corresponding phenolate anions emitting blue-shifted emission, which enable them to sense pH variation in the weakly basic range. Furthermore, white-light emission was achieved by combining two of them which show complementary-color fluorescence, and one of them was utilized for bioimaging of living Hela cells and the high-resolution image was obtained.

Abstract:As reversible fluorescent probes, HTP-1 and HTP-2 have favourable applications for the detection of Zn2+ and H2S. Herein, the impact of solvent on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of HTP-1 and HTP-2 was comprehensively investigated. The obtained geometric parameters and infrared (IR) vibrational analysis associated with the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) indicated that the strength of IHB for HTP-1 was weakened in the excited state. Moreover, structural torsion and almost no ICT behaviour indicated that the ESIPT process did not occur in HTP-1. Nevertheless, when the 7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) group replaced the H atom, the IHB strength of HTP-2 was enhanced after photoexcitation, which inhibited the twisting of tetraphenylethylene, thereby opening the ESIPT channel. Notably, hole-electron analysis and frontier molecular orbitals revealed that the charge decoupling effect was the reason for the fluorescence quenching of HTP-2. Furthermore, the potential energy curves (PECs) revealed that HTP-2 was more inclined to the ESIPT process in polar solvents than in nonpolar solvents. With a decrease in solvent polarity, it was more conducive to the ESIPT process. Our study systematically presents the ESIPT process and different detection mechanisms of the two reversible probe molecules regulated by solvent polarity, providing new insights into the design and development of novel fluorescent probes.

Abstract:A triphenylamine (TPA)-based 2H-quinazoline Zn(II) complex (Q-TPA-Zn) exhibiting dual fluorescence and phosphorescence emission in the solid state was designed and prepared. It possesses mechanochromic luminescence and thermochromic luminescence properties. In the solid state, the white afterglow luminescence could be observed at 77 K (CIExy: 0.27, 0.33) while cyan luminescence could be observed at 297 K. After thermolysis at 300 °C, Q-TPA-Zn could be transformed into Schiff base complex S-TPA-Zn with white fluorescence in the powder state (CIExy: 0.32, 0.38), in methanol (CIExy: 0.32, 0.39), and in dimethylformamide (CIExy: 0.26, 0.32) at room temperature. This arises from dual emission of normal* emission and tautomeric* emission induced by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the benzimidazole NH group to the Schiff base N atom. Q-TPA-Zn could also be transformed into its isomeric form, S-TPA-Zn, through photochemical ring-opening reaction upon irradiation under 365 nm in the solution, exhibiting high-contrast photochromic luminescence. Interestingly, S-TPA-Zn could further be transformed into its zwitterionic isomer after continuous irradiation. The same ring-opening reaction could also take place for the orgainc compound Q-TPA via heating or 365 nm irradiation. The ring-opening reaction mechanism and ESIPT emission were interpreted via theoretical calculation.

Effects of substitution and conjugation on photophysical properties of ESIPT-based fluorophores with the core of 4-aminophthalimide

Abstract:4-Aminophthalimide is a highly fluorescent signaling unit with excellent photophysical properties and wide application foregrounds. Based on this, a range of theoretical investigations are conducted on the fluorescent probe (E)-5-((2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) isoindoline-1, 3-dione (HID) with the core of 4-aminophthalimide using density functional theory (DFT) and time-containing density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in this paper. The optimized configurations, vertical excitation and emission energies, electronic characteristics and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviors of the probe HID are discussed in detail. Furthermore, to enhance the luminescent properties of HID, five novel compounds have been designed based on the structure of HID by introducing amino, methoxy and naphthalene groups (-NH2, -OMe and C10H8). Our work thoroughly explores how the property and position of substituents and conjugation affect photophysical characteristics and ESIPT processes. We find that the ESIPT dynamics can be modulated by the substitution and conjugation effects. Specifically, the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the ortho-position and the introduction of the naphthalene group promote the ESIPT behavior of HID1, whereas the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the meta-position exhibits the contrary impact. Therefore, we boldly infer that the introduction of electron-donating groups in the ortho-position and the introduction of the conjugated group make the ESIPT process more effortless to occur, whereas the introduction of substituents with opposing natures in the meta-position makes the ESIPT process more difficult to occur. In addition, the ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energies (λh and λe) of molecules are calculated to assess their potential as luminescent materials. Our work not only reveals the luminescence and ESIPT mechanism of the probe HID1, but also proposes to modulate the ESIPT process through the substitution and conjugation effects. In particular, the designed molecules have better photoelectric properties as a result of their red-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra, smaller energy gaps, larger transferred charges and greater charge transferred distances, which offers some valuable ideas for the experimental development of more efficient organic luminescent materials with ESIPT properties.
Tactfully regulating the ESIPT mechanism of novel benzazolyl-4-quinolones fluorophore by atomic electronegativity

Abstract:The effects of atomic electronegativity (O, S and Se) on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior of fluorescent benzazolyl-4-quinolones derivatives have been investigated theoretically. Analysis of structure parameters and infrared vibrational spectra indicate that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (O 1 H 1 ⋯N 1 ) are gradually strengthened in the first (S 1 ) excited state as the atomic electronegativity diminishes (O → S → Se). The topological parameters, reduced density gradient (RDG) scatter plots and interaction region indicator (IRI) isosurface further confirm our results. The energy gap of molecular orbitals reflect that the less atomic electronegativity prompt greater excited state reactivity. In addition, the constructed potential energy curves (PECs) reveal that Se substituent has lower potential barrier (0.42 kcal/mol), which is more likely to accelerate the occurrence of ESIPT process. These results show that the atomic electronegativity helps to regulate the ESIPT process, which will pave the way for the design and synthesis of ESIPT-based fluorophores in future.

Extended conjugation of ESIPT-type dopants in nematic liquid crystalline phase for enhancing fluorescence efficiency and anisotropy

Abstract:Organic compounds capable of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) show fluorescence with a large Stokes shift and serve as solid-state emitters, luminescent dopants, and fluorescence-based sensing materials. Fluorescence of ESIPT molecules is usually increased in the solid state, but is weak in solvents due to the accelerated non-radiative decays by rotational motions of a part of the molecular core in these environments. Here we report, using a representative ESIPT motif 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), the extended-conjugation strategy of keeping sufficient fluorescence efficiency both in the solid state and in organic media. The introduction of an alkyl-terminated phenylene-ethynylene group into the HBT molecule dramatically enhances the fluorescence quantum yield from 0.01 to 0.20 in toluene and from 0.07 to 0.32 in a representative room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, 4-pentyl-4'-cyano biphenyl (5CB). The newly-synthesized CnP-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-HBT (n = 5 or 8) serves as a fluorescent dopant in 5CB and exhibits anisotropic fluorescence with the order parameter of 0.48, where the luminescence is controlled by the applied electric-field. The enhanced emission efficiency is rationalized by the larger height of energy barrier for the ESIPT process due to the introduction of phenylene-ethynylene groups.
Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Zwitterionic Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

Abstract:The unique four-level photocycle characteristics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) materials enable population inversion and large spectral separation between absorption and emission through their respective enol and keto forms. This leads to minimal or no self-absorption losses, a favorable feature in acting as an optical gain medium. While conventional ESIPT materials with an enol-keto tautomerism process are widely known, zwitterionic ESIPT materials, particularly those with high photoluminescence, are scarce. Facilitated by the synthesis and characterization of a new family of 2-hydroxyphenyl benzothiazole (HBT) with fluorene substituents, HBT-Fl1 and HBT-Fl2, we herein report the first efficient zwitterionic ESIPT lasing material (HBT-Fl2). The zwitterionic ESIPT HBT-Fl2 not only shows a remarkably low solid-state amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold of 5.3 μJ/cm2 with an ASE peak at 609 nm but also exhibits high ASE photostability. Coupled with its substantially large Stokes shift (≈236 nm ≈10,390 cm-1) and an extremely small overlap of excited-state absorption with ASE emission, comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT studies reveal the zwitterionic characteristics of HBT-Fl2. In opposition to conventional ESIPT with π-delocalized tautomerism as observed in analogue HBT-Fl1 and parent HBT, HBT-Fl2 instead shows charge redistribution in the proton transfer through the fluorene conjugation. This structural motif provides a design tactic in the innovation of new zwitterionic ESIPT materials for efficient light amplification in red and longer-wavelength emission.
Constructing ESIPT-Capable α-Cyanostilbene Luminogens: Influence of Different Aromatic Substitutions Tethered to H-Acceptor (CH = N) on Photophysical Properties, Cu2+ and Fe3+ Detection

Abstract:Herein, two excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-capable α-cyanostilbene luminogens were synthesized by Schiff base reaction of salicylaldehyde-like α-cyanostilbene candidate with 1-naphthylamine and 3-biphenylamine, respectively. We systematically analyzed their photophysical properties compared with their analogue, and demonstrated that their fluorescence behaviors could be elaborately modulated by different aromatic substitutions tethered to H-acceptor (CH = N). In virtue of the outstanding solid fluorescence, the 3-biphenylamine-decorated fluorophore was applied for monitoring Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ qualitatively on the TLC-based test strip in real time and sensing Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ quantitatively in the THF/H 2 O medium ( f w = 90%, pH = 7.4). When the probe chelated with Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ , similar "turn-off" fluorescence signal outputs were triggered. From the fluorescence titration experiments, the detection limits were evaluated as 7.97 × 10 − 8 M for Cu 2+ and 8.24 × 10 − 8 M for Fe 3+ , and the binding constant ( K α ) values of the complexes were found to be 7.80 × 10 4 M -1 for Cu 2+ and 9.06 × 10 4 M -1 for Fe 3+ . Job's plots indicated that probe complexed with Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ in a 2:1 binding stoichiometry ratio. Furthermore, the probe was used to accurately quantify the Fe 3+ spiked in real water specimens. This study offered a new perspective to construct ESIPT-capable α-cyanostilbene luminogen as the potential luminescent probe.

Manipulating Intramolecular Charge Transfer in Terpyridine Derivatives towards "Turn‐On" Fluorescence Chemosensors for Zn2+

Abstract:A series of donor‐acceptor (D‐A) terpyridine derivatives with various intramolecular charge transfer interactions have been successfully synthesized bearing phenyl, methoxyphenyl, N‐butyldiphenylamine (DPA), and triphenylamine (TPA) as electron‐donors and terpyridine (TPY), 2,6‐di(pyrazin‐2‐yl)pyridine (PYDPZ), and N,N‐dimethylated PYDPZ (PYDPZ‐2CH3) as electron acceptors. Upon the introduction of pyrazine rings instead of pyridine ones and further selective N,N'‐dimethylation, the intramolecular D‐A interactions are significantly enhanced, resulting in the remarkable reduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transitions and quenched PL emissions in CH2Cl2 solution. However, their ICT emissions are clearly recovered upon adding Zn2+. Especially, for double positively charged compound 12, the Zn2+‐induced "turn‐on" green emission (λmax, em = 518 nm, Φ = 0.24) with excellent sensitivity (I/I0 = 77) and selectivity (IZn/ICd = 23) is detected. Under the optimized experimental condition (EtOH‐H2O (9:1, v/v), containing 0.05 M HEPES buffer (pH = 7.4)), this probe is used to quantitative determination of Zn2+ in a water sample with an average recovery of 97.5%. Furthermore, the probe is applied to imaging of Zn2+ ions in HeLa cells and its mechanism is confirmed by the molecular dynamics simulation, in which lower coulomb potential for membrane surface adsorption and energy barrier for membrane translocation can be found.

Abstract:We present novel insights into the interplay between excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the 10-Hydroxy-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (10-HHBF) molecule, utilizing the time-dependent density functional theory approach and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Our discoveries entail a reassessment of the luminescence mechanism for 10-HHBF, characterizing it as an ESIPT fluorophore. Additionally, we demonstrate that the molecule undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) following proton transfer, which quenches fluorescence of the proton-transferred state, thus resulting in the absence of dual emission and a limited spectral range of fluorescence. Furthermore, our investigation reveals that 10-HHBF displays a SOC enhancement feature induced by ESIPT, which facilitates the ISC process. This trait serves as a barrier to the application of 10-HHBF in single-molecule white light emitters (SMWLEs). Our findings underscore the notable influence of ESIPT-induced spin-orbit interaction enhancement on luminescent properties, which necessitates consideration in the design of SMWLEs.

Abstract:The sulfur-containing hydrogen bonds exhibit notable potential in gene and protein engineering. As an important research direction of sulfur-containing hydrogen bonding dynamics, the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction of the thiol proton has garnered significant interest. Recently, Chou et al. synthesized a series of sulfur-containing H-bonded molecules, inclusive of 3-thiolflavone (3 TF), its trifluoromethyl derivative (3FTF), and its diethylamino derivative (3NTF), thereby inaugurating a new chapter in the ESIPT reaction of the thiol proton. Nevertheless, many open issues cannot be answered solely by experimental means and call for a detailed theoretical investigation, especially the relationship between the molecular excited-state properties and different luminescence properties of the three molecules. Herein, we validate that the molecules undergo the ESIPT reaction of the thiol proton and identify the time scale through the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculation. Moreover, employing the spin-flip TDDFT approach, the analysis of the non-radiative transition process reveals that difference in Gibbs free energy of activation (ΔG ⧧ ) for the transition from Frank-Condon point to minimum energy conical intersection (MECI) point primarily accounts for the different luminescence properties of the three molecules. Besides, we also reveal the reason for the abnormal blue-shifted fluorescence of the 3NTF in the aggregated state by the ONIOM (TDDFT: UFF) strategy. These findings are favorable to understanding the luminescence mechanism of sulfur-containing H-bonded molecules and provide a reference for the synthesis and design of the luminescent materials based on the molecules with thiol proton transfer properties.

Abstract:Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules demonstrating specific enol-keto tautomerism and the related photoluminescence (PL) switch have wide applications in displaying, sensing, imaging, lasing, etc. However, an ESIPT-attributed coordination polymer showing alternative PL between thermally activated fluorescence (TAF) and long persistent luminescence (LPL) has never been explored. Herein, we report the assembly of a dynamic Cd(II) coordination polymer (LIFM-101) from the ESIPT-type ligand, HPI2C (5-(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)isophthalic acid). For the first time, TAF and/or color-tuned LPL can be achieved by controlling the temperature under the guidance of ESIPT excited states. Noteworthily, the twisted structure of the HPI2C ligand in LIFM-101 achieves an effective mixture of the higher-energy excited states, leading to ISC (intersystem crossing)/RISC (reverse intersystem crossing) energy transfer between the high-lying keto-triplet state (Tn(K*)) and the first singlet state (S1(K*)). Meanwhile, experimental and theoretical results manifest the occurrence probability and relevance among RISC, ISC, and internal conversion (IC) in this unique ESIPT-attributed coordination polymer, leading to the unprecedented TAF/LPL switching mechanism, and paving the way for the future design and application of advanced optical materials.

Fluorescence emission mechanism for the π-conjugated zwitterion 2,4-Bisimidazolylphenol base on ESIPT: A TDDFT theoretical reconsideration

Abstract:Molecules with zwitterionic characteristics exhibit significant potential for utilization in nonlinear optics, optoelectronics, and organic lasers owing to their large dipole moments. Recently, the synthesized compound 2,4-bis (4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl) phenol (2,4-bImP) by Sakai et al. has been noticed for its unique photochromic properties in solvents [J. Phys. Chem. A, 125 (2021), 4784-4792]. The observed fluorescence in chloroform was attributed to the keto tautomer. Based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer, the photochromism of 2,4-bImP in chloroform was interpreted as zwitterion production. However, the zwitterion with a specific electronic structure can be in resonance with the conventional neutral structure. The impact of the resonance contribution from the zwitterion and the conventional neutral structure on fluorescence attribution was not taken into account in the previous studies. In this investigation, the ESIPT mechanism of the 2,4-bImP in chloroform has been explored using both the density functional theory and the time-dependent density functional theory. The optimized geometric configuration parameters illustrate the molecular resonant properties. The calculated fluorescence spectra on the basis of the optimization results further corroborate that the fluorescence peaks after proton transfer originates from the resonance of the zwitterionic and the neutral configuration. The zwitterionic nature of the molecule was demonstrated by electrostatic potential and atomic dipole modified Hesfeld atomic charge (ADCH) analysis. Furthermore, the characterization of potential energy curves and IR spectrum further verified the resonance of both the zwitterionic and neutral structures. The results reveal that the 2,4-bImP molecule generates the neutral o-quinoid structure and the zwitterionic structure resonance phenomenon following ESIPT. The aforementioned resonance structure offers novel insights into the ascription of fluorescence. These discoveries establish the theoretical foundation for the exploration and development of zwitterions.

Abstract:In this work, the substitution effect of different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the electron spectra and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties of the chromophore 2-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)benzo[d]oxazole-5-sulfonic acid (BOM-1) has been studied via the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. All the compounds exhibit the dual-fluorescence emission, and the fluorescence spectra of the derivatives show redshift emission compared with that of the original molecule, resulting in the larger Stokes shift as expected. The results were cross-verified by the molecular geometry, frontier molecular orbitals, infrared spectroscopy and other auxiliary calculations. These results show that the electron-withdrawing group greatly promote the occurrence of the forward ESIPT process and increase the Stokes shift. What is more special is that the Stokes shift and the energy barrier of the forward ESIPT are significantly enlarged by introducing both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups. The energy barrier, absorption and fluorescence spectra of luminescent molecules can be adjusted effectively by introducing appropriate functional groups. In addition, the emission spectra from the ultraviolet region (359 nm) to the orange region (601 nm) are obtained. This work would contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of ESIPT reactions and improves the luminescence properties of ESIPT molecules.
