Abstract:Dimethylnitramine (DMNA) is a prototype system used in the investigation of the unimolecular decomposition mechanism of the nitramine-compound family. The photoinduced excited-state nonadiabatic processes and successive unimolecular dissociation of DMNA were investigated by trajectory surface-hopping dynamics at the semiempirical OM2/MRCI level. Two S-1/S-0 conical intersections (CI01 alpha and CI01 beta) were found to play essential roles in the nonadiabatic decay dynamics of DMNA. After the S-1 -> S-0 decay, the excess kinetic energy finally results in the cleavage of the N-N bond in the ground electronic state. The two reaction channels through CI01 alpha and CI01 beta show differences in molecular motions and decay features. The trajectories passing CI01 alpha can hop one or several times, and the intramolecular vibrational energy transfer in the ground state takes place before dissociation, whereas trajectories following the CI01 beta channel mainly dissociate directly after only one S-1 -> S-0 hop.

Abstract:Oral administration of 2-aminoethianethiosulfuric acid offered a powerful protective action in mice against X-radiation of 600-800R. The effectiveness continued for more than 6hr after ingestion of the compound. The radiation protective. effect of the compound was not observed, however, in the animals which received 900RR radiation. S-Sulfocysteine was also radioprotective orally, but the effectiveness faded away in one hr.

Abstract:Abstract The vast applications of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde-derived systems in the sensors originate from their unusual excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence in the molecules. The mechanism of ESIPT fluorescence in the solvated 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde carbohydrazone (HNLSC) system was investigated by ab initio time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculation. The solvation stabilized both ground state and excited state in the enol form, and the medium intramolecular interaction ensured the bond break, bond-forming and proton transfer in the conversion from excited enol form to keto form. ESIPT reaction from the enol form to the keto form had a low barrier of 2.54 kcal mol −1 in the cyclohexane solvation, and all the calculated emission was consistent with the experimental findings. Moreover, the disaggregation of excited enol form was favoured instead of the IPT conversion to keto form, vanishing the specific ESIPT pathway in the protic surroundings. Our research can give a meaningful insight into the two kinds of fluorescence spectroscopy in the HNISC system found by experimental measurement and be potential guidance to the application of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde-derived systems in the development of new-type sensors, nonlinear optical materials and biochemical probes.

Abstract:The development of fluorescence materials with switched on/off emission has attracted great attention owing to the potential application of these materials in chemical sensing. In this work, the photophysical properties of a series of original 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidines were thoroughly studied. The compounds were prepared by following well-established and straightforward methodologies and showed very little or null photoluminescence both in solution and in the solid state. This absence of emission can be explained by a fast proton transfer from the OH group to the nitrogen atoms of the pyrimidine ring to yield an excited tautomer that deactivates through a nonradiative pathway. The key role of the OH group in the emission quenching was demonstrated by the preparation of 2'-unsubstituted derivatives, all of which exhibited violet or blue luminescence. Single crystals of some compounds suitable for an X-ray diffraction analysis could be obtained, which permitted us to investigate inter- and intramolecular interactions and molecular packing structures. The protonation of the pyrimidine ring by an addition of trifluoroacetic acid inhibited the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, causing a reversible switch on fluorescence response detectable by the naked eye. This acidochromic behavior allows 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidines to be used as solid-state acid-base vapor sensors and anticounterfeiting agents. Extensive density functional theory and its time-dependent counterpart calculations at the M06-2X/6-31+G** level of theory were performed to rationalize all the experimental results and understand the impact of protonation on the different optical transitions.

Abstract:Agar gel, cellulose acetate, and starch gel electrophoresis are all capable of diagnosing sickle-cell anaemia, sickle-cell haemoglobin C disease, and haemoglobin C disease in cord blood samples. Of these three electrophoretic techniques, agar gel is the easiest to interpret. Paper electrophoresis can reliably and rapidly detect sickle haemoglobin and haemoglobin C in cord blood samples. Being incapable of differentiating foetal and normal adult haemoglobin, the value of paper electrophoresis is limited to an initial screening procedure.

Abstract:The photophysical properties of N-butyl-4-hydroxyl-1, 8-naphthalimide (BOH) and N-(morpholinoethyl)−4-hydroxy-1, 8-naphthalimide (MOH) in various solvents are presented and the density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods at the B3LYP/TZVP theoretical level are adopted to investigate the UV–visible absorption and emission data. An efficient intermolecular excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reaction occurs for both compounds in DMSO, methanol and water. In aqueous solution, both BOH and MOH can be used as ratiometric pH probes and perform as strong photoacids with pKa*=−2.2, −2.4, respectively. Most interestingly, in the steady-state fluorescence spectra of BOH and MOH in concentrated HCl, an unexpected blue-shifted band is observed and assumed to originate from the contact ion pair (CIP) formed by hydronium ion and the anionic form of the photoacid resulted from ESPT. Theoretical calculations are used to simulate the CIP in the case of BOH, which afford reasonable results compared with the experimental data.

Abstract:The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton-transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. This work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer state, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Abstract:Indoles are notable for their distinct photophysical and photochemical properties, making them useful indicators in biological systems and promising candidates for a variety of pharmaceutical applications. While some indoles exhibit room temperature phosphorescence, such a phenomenon has not been observed in nitroindoles. Typically, adding of a nitro group into aromatic compounds promotes ultrafast intersystem crossing and increases the formation quantum yield of the lowest excited triplet (T1). Therefore, understanding the reactivity of nitroindoles' T1 states is imperative. This study investigated the physical properties and chemical reactivities of the T1 state of 6-nitroindole (3HN-6NO2) in both polar aprotic and protic solvents, using transient absorption spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate the basicity and acidity of 3HN-6NO2, emphasizing its potential for protonation and dissociation in mildly acidic and basic conditions, respectively. Furthermore, 3HN-6NO2 has a high oxidizing capacity, participating in electron transfer reactions and proton-coupled electron transfer to produce radicals. Interestingly, in protic solvents like alcohols, 3HN-6NO2 dissociates at the -NH group and forms N-H…O hydrogen-bonded complexes with the nitro group. By identifying transient absorption spectra of intermediates and quantifying kinetic reaction rate constants, we illuminate the unique properties of the T1 state nitroindoles, enriching our understanding of their photophysical and photochemical behaviors. The results of this study have significant implications for their potential application in both biological systems and materials science.

Abstract:Recently, nicotinoyl nitrene (2) has been generated from the photodecomposition of nicotinoyl azide (1) and used as the key intermediate in probing nucleobase solvent accessibility inside cells. Following the 266 nm laser photolysis of nicotinoyl azide (1) and isonicotinoyl azide (5) in solid N2 matrices at 15 K, nicotinoyl nitrene (2) and isonicotinoyl nitrene (6) have now been identified by matrix-isolation infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Both aroyl nitrenes 2 and 6 adopt closed-shell singlet ground states stabilized by significant Nnitrene···O interactions, which is consistent with the spectroscopic analysis and calculations at the CBS-QB3 level of theory. Upon subsequent visible light irradiations, 2 (400 ± 20 nm) and 6 (532 nm) undergo rearrangement to pyridyl isocyanates 3 and 7. Further dissociation of 3 and 7 under 193 nm laser irradiation results in CO elimination and formation of ketenimines 12 and 13 via the ring opening of elusive pyridyl nitrenes 4 and 8, respectively. In addition to the IR spectroscopic identification of 8 in the triplet ground state, its reversible photointerconversion with ring expansion to diazacycloheptatetraene 9 has been observed directly. The spectroscopic identification of the nitrene intermediates was aided by calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level, and the mechanism for their generation in stepwise decompositions of the azides is discussed in the light of CBS-QB3 calculations.

Abstract:0rtho-Nitroaniline (ONA) is a model for the insensitive high explosive 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) that shares strong hydrogen bonding character between adjacent nitro and amino groups. This work reports femtosecond time-resolved mass spectrometry (FTRMS) measurements and theoretical calculations that explain the high stability of the ONA cation compared with related nitroaromatic molecules. Ab initio calculations found that the lowest-lying electronic excited state of the ONA cation, D1, lies more than 2 eV above the ground state, and the energetic barriers to rearrangement and dissociation reactions exceed this D1 energy. These theoretical results were confirmed by FTRMS pump-probe measurements showing that (1) fragment ions represented less than 30% of the total ion yield when a 1014 W cm-2, 1300 nm, 20 fs pump pulse was used to ionize ONA; and (2) 3.1 eV (400 nm) photons were required to induce dissociation of the ONA cation. Stronger coupling between the ground D0 and excited D4 states of the ONA cation at the geometry of neutral ONA resulted in a transient enhancement of fragment ion yields at <300 fs pump-probe delay times, prior to relaxation of the ONA cation to its optimal geometry.

Abstract:As a potential source of the hydroxyl (OH) radical and nitrous acid (HONO), photolysis of o-nitrophenol (ONP) is of significant interest in both experimental and theoretical studies. In the atmospheric environment, the number of water molecules surrounding ONP changes with the humidity of the air, leading to an anisotropic chemical environment. This may have an impact on the photodynamics of ONP and provide a mechanism that differs from previously reported ones in the gas phase or in solution. Herein, the high-level MS-CASPT2//CASSCF method was performed to elucidate the excited-state decay and the generation of the OH radical for ONP before proton transfer in the microsolvated surrounding. We found that the varying number of water molecules affects the ground-state structures and alters the energy levels of nπ* and ππ* at the Franck-Condon (FC) region. Nevertheless, this is not the case for the excited-state minima, which exhibit very similar adiabatic excitation properties. In addition, the presence of water molecules also significantly influences the intersection structures since hydrogen bonds will hinder or alleviate the rotation or pyramidalization of the nitro (NO2) group. This will, in turn, change the excited-state relaxation mechanism of ONP. Finally, we speculated that the OH radical might be formed in the hot ground state of ONP in the microsolvated surrounding after exploring all possible electronic states.

Abstract:Triazole compounds are important organic systems with excellent electronic properties, which has diagnostic potential in the fields of organic electronics and organic photovoltaics. The important photophysical nature of these systems is the transformation between the enol and keto forms after excited-state proton transfer. In this work, the IR vibrational spectrum, ESIPT mechanism and excited-state decay dynamics of 2,2'-(1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diyl)diphenol (ExPh) are explored by using electronic structure calculations and non-adiabatic dynamics simulations. Two S1/S0 conical intersections with distinct proton transfer (ESIPT-I and ESIPT-II) involved were obtained. The associated two-dimensional S1 minimum-energy potential energy surface indicates that the dynamical roles of these two S1/S0 conical intersections in the S1 excited-state decay are quite different. The ESIPT-I reaction is more favorable to occur than the ESIPT-II process. Our dynamics simulations support this suspect with the whole trajectories decay to the ground state via the S1S0-1 conical intersection which involves ESIPT-I process. The ESIPT-involved efficient deactivation pathway can be partially responsible for the decrease of fluorescence emission. These results and ESIPT mechanisms are helpful for understanding the decay pathways of similar systems.

How nitro group position determines the emission properties of diketopyrrolopyrroles

Abstract:Two complex π-expanded diketopyrrolopyrroles (EDPPs) have been prepared following multistep but straightforward strategy. We discovered that the fate of these molecules in the excited state can be controlled by subtle differences in their structure. When NO2 groups are located at a distant position, the quadrupolar, centrosymmetric dye possesses strong red emission across the solvents’ polarity scale. However, when NO2 groups are adjacent to the lactam moiety, the EDPP has negligible emission even in non-polar solvents. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the primary distinction between the two molecules lies in the structural planarity. The molecule with NO 2 groups adjacent to the lactam moiety exhibits a loss of planarity due to the Coulombic repulsion between these groups. The calculations also suggest that the nitro group does not participate in the S0→S1 excitation. Furthermore, for both compounds, the first two excited states (one bright and one dark) are found to be very close in energy. The change in molecular geometry affects the non-radiative deactivation of excited states, leading to the two distinct emission behaviors. Experiments in glassy solvent at low temperatures reveal that at 77 K, the photophysics of both dyes becomes the same, which proves that thermal activation is the key mechanism for non-radiative decay of the excited state for non-emissive EDPP.

Abstract:Shikonin, a naphthoquinone dye, is a molecule of colour of natural origin, whose peculiar properties have not yet been fully rationalized. Its core structure consists of a di-hydroxy-naphthoquinone with an additional non-aromatic hydroxy group. From a comprehensive study involving fast spectroscopic techniques (fs-TA and fs-UC) and TDDFT electronic structure calculations on shikonin ( Shk ) and its derivatives 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone ( 5HNQ ), 5,8 – diacetoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone ( DiAc ), 5,8-dihidroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone ( DHNQ ) and acetylshikonin, AcShk , it is shown that intramolecular excited state proton transfer (ESPT) is present and is determinant in the deactivation of the hydroxy containing molecules. This is mirrored by the dominance of the internal conversion deactivation channel. In Shk, the non-aromatic hydroxy group determines the preferred conformer in both the ground- and excited-state, as reflected in the doubling of fluorescence quantum yield of this molecule relative to DHNQ . From fs-UC, a kinetic isotopic effect of 1.7 was obtained for DHNQ .

Abstract:Photoacids show a strong increase in acidity in the first electronic excited state, enabling real-time studies of proton transfer in acid-base reactions, proton transport in energy storage devices and biomolecular sensor protein systems. Several explanations have been proposed for what determines photoacidity, ranging from variations in solvation free energy to changes in electronic structure occurring along the four stages of the Förster cycle. Here we use picosecond nitrogen K-edge spectroscopy to monitor the electronic structure changes of the proton donating group in a protonated aromatic amine photoacid in solution upon photoexcitation and subsequent proton transfer dynamics. Probing core-to-valence transitions locally at the amine functional group and with orbital specificity, we clearly reveal pronounced electronic structure, dipole moment and energetic changes on the conjugate photobase side. This result paves the way for a detailed electronic structural characterization of the photoacidity phenomenon.

Mechanistic Insights on Chemosensing Response of Pyrene and Anthracene Based Fluorescent Probes Towards Nitroaromatic Compounds

Abstract:Two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon‐based compounds, N2,N4,N6‐tris‐((pyren‐1‐yl) methyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine‐2,4,6‐triamine (SM1) and N2,N4,N6‐tris‐((anthracen‐9‐yl)methyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine‐2,4,6‐triamine (SM2) are explored as chemosensors for detecting nitroaromatic compounds. The chemosensing studies of SM1 and SM2 showed selective sensing of 4‐nitroaniline (4NA) in homogeneous medium (in Acetonitrile (ACN) and in DMSO) which is due to the hyperpolarizability of 4NA. Quenching mechanism studied for the three analytes (4NA, 2NA and PA) showed dynamic quenching in SM1 in presence of 4NA and 2NA, while static quenching in presence of PA. Solvent effect on the chemosensing response of SM1 and SM2 towards PA was observed and it showed enhancement in the response on changing the solvent from ACN to DMSO to water. DFT studies, photophysical analysis, NMR experiments and complex synthesis experiments were done to provide an in depth analysis on the observed sensing phenomena. Both SM1 and SM2 being insoluble in water, were used as heterogeneous chemosensors in aqueous medium where selective sensing was observed for 4NA and PA. The LOD of PA and 4NA by SM1 in water was found to be 1.3 ppt and 2.1 ppt, respectively. The recyclability and stability after sensing studies were confirmed by PXRD.
