Abstract:Policymakers around the globe have used various options for controlling CO2 emissions, among which increasing renewable energy consumption has proved to be the most viable. Consequently, this research attempts to look into the effects of financial efficiency, education, and digitization on renewable energy consumption in China from 1994 to 2020. To estimate the short- and long-run relationship between the variables, we have utilized the QARDL approach. The results suggest that the ICT, financial institutions and market development, education, GDP, and CO2 emissions all help improve renewable energy consumption in China in the long run. In the short run, the ICT, financial institutions and markets, education, GDP, and CO2 emissions all proved to be beneficial in increasing renewable energy consumption. In order to test whether our independent variables have a symmetric or asymmetric impact on renewable energy consumption, the Wald test is applied, which confirms the long-run nonlinear impact of ICT, financial institutions and markets, education, GDP, and CO2 emissions on renewable energy consumption, while the short-run asymmetric impacts are confirmed for a financial institution and GDP only. Therefore, governments should reinforce the amalgamation of digitalization, financial efficiency, and education while formulating policies for renewable energy consumption.

Abstract:The most accepted solution to deal with the problems of global warming and climate change is to transform the energy sector by moving toward renewable energy. Therefore, the primary focus of the analysis is to examine the role of renewable energy consumption, higher education, and ICT in improving environmental quality and green growth in China. We have employed the quantile ARDL model to obtain the short-and long-run estimates. According to the findings of QARDL, the long-run estimated coefficients of renewable energy consumption and higher education are positively significant in most quantiles. However, in the long run, the estimates attached to ICT are insignificant in the CO 2 emissions model in most quantiles. On the other hand, the estimates of renewable energy consumption are significantly positive from the 50th quantile and onward in the green growth model, confirming that the higher the renewable energy in the economy, closer it will get to the target of green economic growth. The long-run estimates of higher education and ICT are positively significant at most quantiles in the green growth model. In the short run, renewable energy consumption turned out to be the most critical determinant of CO 2 emissions and green growth.

Abstract:Renewable energy not only helps to safeguard the environment and slow down climate change but also supports economic growth and energy security. The significance of renewable energy sources is expanding as more people throughout the globe understand how important it is to switch to clean energy sources. Therefore, empirics are in search of the factors that can promote renewable energy production. This analysis investigates some of the novel determinants of renewable energy production, such as digital inclusion, public participation, and environmental governance, which have not been examined previously in any study. For empirical analysis, the study employs the ARDL and QARDL estimation techniques using Chinese data from 1998Q1 to 2021Q4. The analysis findings confirm that digital financial inclusion, ICT, and GDP are vital in boosting both short and long-run renewable production. Green investment, environmental governance, and carbon emissions also significantly and favourably impact long-run renewable energy production. In the Quantile ARDL model, digital financial inclusion is positively linked to renewable energy production at most of its quantiles in the short and long run, while the ICT, GDP, environmental governance, and carbon emissions are positively linked to renewable energy in most quantiles in the long-run only. The Wald test confirms the asymmetric impact for all variables in the long run, which implies that policymakers should consider the positive and negative changes in these factors while devising policies for enhancing renewable energy production.

Abstract:Environmental problems such as climate change have brought to light the necessity of implementing more stringent environmental regulations and expanding the use of renewable energy sources in order to protect the environment and maintain a green ecosystem. As a result, this study aims to investigate the impact of China's financial development and consumption of renewable energy on the country's environmental quality from 2009 to 2019. Following the application of the ARDL method, this research begins by employing the NARDL (non-linear autoregressive distributive lag) model in order to analyze the asymmetry in the data that results from the presence of either positive or negative aspects of financial development. The results of the NARDL bound test indicate that the variables are long-term co-integrated. This enables the application of the ARDL methodology. The ARDL bound test findings show a positive relationship that exists over the long-term between financial development, trade openness, renewable energy consumption, economic growth, and CO 2 emissions. In addition, the error correction model (ECM) provides evidence that there is, at least in the short run, a connection between CO 2 emissions, financial development, economic growth, and energy consumption. Furthermore, according to a dynamic multiplier graph, the positive aspect of financial development has a greater influence on carbon emissions for a longer time than the shocks associated with a less favorable financial development. According to the findings, there does not appear to be any asymmetry between CO 2 emissions and financial development, which supports the idea that both the positive and negative aspects of financial development have an equally significant impact.

Abstract:Pro-environmental behavior has a significant role to play in environmental sustainability. There has been little research done on environmental higher education-renewable energy consumption nexus. This study examines the impact of environmental higher education on renewable energy consumption in China from 1997 to 2021. The ARDL results show that higher environmental education enhances renewable energy consumption in long run. Findings also show that internet usage and economic development encourage renewable energy consumption in the long run. However, financial development and internet usage have a short-term impact on renewable energy consumption in China. The QARDL estimates are robust, and the finding shows that environmental higher education has a positive impact on renewable energy consumption in short and long run at higher quantiles. The empirical findings have environmental implications for China in terms of achieving long-term environmental sustainability by embracing patterns of pro-environmental behavior.

Abstract:Financial inclusion means that individuals and businesses can easily avail financial goods and services at an affordable cost. It is widely recognized that financial inclusion can help preserve the environment by increasing the consumption of renewable energy sources. Hence, our basic aim is to investigate whether financial inclusion has any effect on renewable energy consumption and environmental quality in China. To get the estimates of the variables, we have preferred the ARDL model. The estimates of the model confirm that a rise in the number of ATMs and total insurance has a positive impact on renewable energy consumption in China in the long run. Conversely, an increase in the number of ATMs and total insurance negatively affects CO2 emissions in China. In general, we can say that financial inclusion increases renewable energy consumption and reduces CO2 emissions in China. Therefore, by using financial inclusion, policymakers should try to divert the resources towards environmentally friendly consumption and production activities.

Abstract:How do digitalizing businesses help them achieve sustainable growth? This research examines the mediating function of green technology innovation in answering this question by defining sustainable development performance in terms of corporations' financial and environmental success. The educational system in China is examined to see how much of an impact it has on eco-innovation, as well as the relationship between green technology and innovation. The IFE test was utilized to determine whether or not the associations between variables such as GDP per capita, urbanization, green technology, higher education, and carbon dioxide emissions will continue to exist between 2004 and 2020 in China. The data for this analysis came from 30 of China's provinces. The findings of both the short-term and long-term CS-ARDL estimations demonstrated a positive link between eco-innovation and GDP per capita, green technology, higher education, and CO 2 emissions. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between urbanization and eco-innovation. The next topic covered in the research was how the effects of green technology might be seen in areas such as GDP per capita, higher education, and carbon dioxide emissions. The findings might provide valuable knowledge that developing economies can use to construct a feasible, sustainable path.

Abstract:Increasing renewable energy consumption is considered the panacea to tackle the issue of global warming and energy security. The digitalization of society can provide smart solutions for energy and environmental-related issues. Similarly, education can bring environmental awareness and encourage individuals and firms to rely more on renewable energy sources. We have tried to investigate the impact of education and digitalization on the renewable energy demand in Japan by applying the Quantile ARDL model. In the short and long run, the estimates attached to education are significantly positive almost all quantiles, which confirms that the higher the level of education in Japan, the higher the renewable energy demand. Likewise, the estimated coefficients of ICT, in both the short and long run, are positive and significant, confirming that increased digitalization help facilitate the renewable energy demand in Japan. Moreover, when we observe the Wald test, the asymmetric impact of education and digitalization are confirmed on the renewable energy demand in the short and long run.

Abstract:The post-COP26 era provides policy directions for economies to track the ways of achieving sustainable environment as a lasting solution to the ravaging impacts of global warming. The call for global sustainability heightens the criticality of digital economy which is recently evolving in environmental empirics. This study provides the first empirical evidence advancing the symmetric effects of eco-digitalization, green technology, green finance, and renewable energy on environmental sustainability in China within the novel STIRPAT model. The study explores the ARDL model to evaluate the stated hypotheses based on quarterly data from 1995Q1 to 2019Q4. The preliminary analyses reveal the vulnerability of the Chinese environment to surging greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Besides, the structural break unit root anchored on Zivot–Andrew reveals prominent breakpoint years. The essential roles of urbanization and affluence are empirically investigated. Robustness checks on the long-run impacts are conducted based on FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR coupled with the causality analysis examined based on Toda–Yamamoto estimator. The findings uncover that eco-digitalization, green technology, green finance, and renewable energy promote environmental sustainability in China by mitigating CO 2 emissions and ecological footprint. Conversely, urbanization and affluence escalate both pollutants. Further, causalities running from bidirectional to unidirectional nexuses among the variables are well documented. Policy insights that drive the paths to sustainability in China are suggested based on the findings.

Abstract:This study is intended to expose the connectedness of green financing and other green policies like renewable energy and technological progress towards identifying the best practice to achieve climate goal cum sustainable environmental development for China within the period 1985–2021. Amid the increased utilization of fossil fuels in China's economic activities and its position as the highest carbon emitting country in the world, China is considered a financial stable economy with access to renewable energy source such as hydroelectric power. For effective research into the objective of this study, the study builds on mechanism of the green finance—renewable—technology and emission nexus with the help of linear dynamics of ARDL bound and VECM granger causality methods. Empirical results from both approaches have given insight to the selected objectives of this study. According to ARDL dynamics: (i) the coefficients of linear (1.802) and non-linear(− 1.860) (i.e. square term) of financial development are positively and negatively connected to the carbon emissions. This confirms the presence of inverted U-shape relationship between the financial development and carbon emissions. (ii) the relationship between hydroelectric power representing renewable energy and CO 2 is negative—(− 0.19) and significant at 1% level. This results depicts the reduction power of hydroelectric power on CO 2 , (iii) also, a negative (− 0.000982) linkage between number of patent application representing technological innovation and environmental development through carbon emissions responses is established. Also, findings from VECM granger causality approach back the findings from ARDL through a nexus between the variables of interest (finance, hydroelectric power, and technology and carbon emissions). Findings point to the ability of green financing to reduce carbon emissions if green financing policies are utilized effectively in regulating carbon emissions.

Abstract:China's government has pledged to attain net-zero emissions by 2050 and aims to create the world's most resilient and forward-looking border by 2025. It has outlined a high-level vision for digital trade and a freeport plan and guarantees to implement new free trade agreements, develop infrastructure, and equalise the economy. Therefore, this study explores the dynamic impact of digital trade and financial development on ecological sustainability from 2000-Q1 to 2020-Q4. We apply the Bootstrap ARDL model for empirical analysis and found that digital trade in goods and services, financial development, and green innovation are conducive to long-term environmental sustainability. Similar results are also observed in the short run; however, the influence of short-run parameters is relatively lower. Moreover, the error correction term endorses convergence towards stable equilibrium with a 32.7% quarterly adjustment rate. Granger causality test report uni-direction casualty in all variables, except green innovation and carbon emissions. These findings recommend an inclusive policy for promoting digital trade, financial integration, and green innovation in China.

Most of the countries are making fundamental changes in their economic models so that they can become carbon neutral by the year 2050. In this regard, green growth should be the preferred model for most economies in the world. The literature on green growth is growing, but no past study has shed light on how financial deepening, smart urbanization, rural development, and digital economy impact green growth within the framework of carbon neutrality targets. Thus, there exists a significant gap in the literature, which motivates to conduct this analysis. The primary motive of this study is to analyze the asymmetric impact of financial deepening, smart urbanization, rural development, and digital economy on green growth within the framework of carbon neutrality targets. Empirical estimates are obtained by utilizing the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag framework. The results confirm that positive changes in financial deepening, smart urbanization, ICT, and rural development help promote long-term green growth. The negative changes in financial deepening hinder green growth in the long-run, while the negative changes in smart urbanization, information and communication technology (ICT), and rural development do not significantly impact green growth in the long-run. In the short-run, only the positive changes in financial deepening and ICT promote green growth, while the rest of the estimates are insignificant. The results imply that financial deepening, smart urbanization, ICT, and rural development are vital in achieving carbon-neutrality objectives by fostering green growth. Thus, policymakers should rely on the green growth framework to achieve net zero carbon emissions.

Abstract:Due to its rapid economic development over the past few decades, China is now at the forefront of environmental issues, necessitating creative solutions that combine ICT, digital financial inclusion, environmental pressure, and free trade to encourage green investment. This study aims to investigate the linkage between ICT, digital financial inclusion, environmental pressure, free trade, and green investment in China from 1996 to 2022 by employing the Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). As per our results, the statistical values of Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability, and average variance are all above the cutoff point, demonstrating the applicability of this methodology. According to the structural model's results, the path coefficients between digital financial inclusion and green investment, environmental pressure and green investment, and GDP and green investment are positively significant, implying that these three factors are crucial for boosting green investment in China. In addition, our vector autoregressive model results suggest that ICT, digital financial inclusion, environmental pressures, free trade, and GDP cause green investment to rise in China. Thus, the policymakers in China should focus on developing comprehensive policies to encourage green investment in China, which is crucial for economic and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:In today's world of rapidly expanding economies, the fundamental aim of most nations is to raise the quality of living for their citizens. The investigation aims to analyze how environmental rules affect the emergence of environmentally conscious economies. This research focused on China's 26 provinces to investigate the elements influencing green economic development. These components included information and communication technology (ICT), industrial structure (IND), human capital (EDU), and foreign direct investment. Spatial modeling and SBM methods were utilized to show that there is still a connection between the variables after all these years using yearly time series data that began in 2000. Overall, the results suggest that environmental regulation helps green economic development (GDE), whereas industrial structure significantly hinders. Similar to the previous point, information and communication technology has a favorable influence on building a sustainable economy. The problem of ensuring long-term economic growth via information and communication technology is complicated and has scholars engaged in exciting discussion. The expansion of the green economy is also affected by factors such as human capital and foreign direct investment. This study's findings illuminate the economic effects of environmental regulations and support the contention that such laws are necessary for accomplishing the win-win goals of green economic development and environmental protection. This means that the research provides a fresh perspective to consider the monetary effects of environmental restrictions.

Abstract:The idea of green growth stresses the necessity for economic expansion while resolving environmental issues, notably climate change. The Internet of Things (IoT) and environmental regulations have the potential to support green growth. Therefore, this study intends to examine the empirical link between the IoT, environmental regulations, and green growth in China by utilizing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) methods to analyze data from 1997 to 2021. Data are obtained from reputable local and international sources like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), World Development Indicators (WDI), the Energy Information Administration (EIA), and the National Bureau of Statistics of China. Findings derived from the baseline ARDL model prove that the IoT, environmental regulations, renewable energy consumption, and research and development (R&D) encourage long-run green growth. Likewise, the robust model also highlights that the internet, environmental policy stringency, renewable energy consumption, and R&D help encourage green growth. In the short run, environmental policy stringency and the internet are favorably linked to green growth in the robust model, and renewable energy consumption is favorably linked to green growth in the baselines model; however, environmental regulation is negatively linked to green growth. The findings from the QARDL analysis show that the impact of the IoT on promoting green growth is significant across all quantiles. On the other hand, the effects of environmental regulation are more pronounced at higher levels of green growth. These findings imply that policymakers should try to increase the role of digitalization in society by promoting the IoT and the internet to decouple economic growth and environmental pollution. Moreover, the digitalization policy should be supported by implementing strict environmental laws and regulations.

Abstract:This study focuses on determining the relationship between carbon emissions, financial development, population, green technology innovation, energy Consumption, and employment rate from 1980 to 2019 in China. The study applies the unit root test, bootstrapped ARDL cointegration, and the Granger causality to examine the data properties and association between the variables of interest. Empirical findings indicate that green technology innovations and financial development play a major role in environmental protection, specifically in the long run. In contrast, energy consumption and employment rate are more vulnerable to protecting the natural environment in China. On the other side, the findings under short-run estimation do not support the role of green technology innovation in reducing environmental degradation. Based on the empirical findings, it is suggested that a strong financial system would help to achieve long-run sustainability and the emissions mitigating effects can be further strengthen by implementing green technologies across industries. In doing so, strict environmental regulations can regulate the financial and traditional industrial sector in adoption of energy efficient technologies.

Abstract:In the past 20 years, there has been an increased focus on the connection between investments in digitalization, environment, and economic growth, however the effects of digitalization on energy efficiency in developing nations have received little attention in empirical researches. therefore, the goal of current research is to study the effect of digitalization on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in China over 1995-2020. For this purpose, two separate models are formulated with energy efficiency and CO2 emissions as dependent variables and digitalization (measured by ICT technologies) as the explanatory variable. The study applies three time series approaches namely, Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS), Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS), and Canonical Cointegration Regression (CCR) to empirically estimate the study objectives. The study findings show that ICT plays positive role in promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability as coefficient of ICT is negative in both models. It was concluded from the findings that ICT sector has positive implications in terms of energy and environment in China. The study recommends the Chinese government and policy makers to pay attention and device effective policies for promotion of ICT sector in the country.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Rapid modernization and industrialization have significantly intensified carbon emissions and worsened environmental sustainability around the globe. Despite the significant importance of green innovation, clean energy consumption, and education in every aspect of life, the role of all these variables in determining environmental sustainability has not been explored quite extensively in case of China. Under this premise, the present study aims to investigate the role of green innovation, clean energy investment, and education on environmental sustainability in highly polluted Asian economies for the period of 1991–2019 by employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The findings infer that increase in green innovation reduces CO2 emissions in China, India, and Japan in the long-run. However, an increase in clean energy investment and education tends to decline CO2 emissions in Russia and Japan. The findings confirm that green innovation, clean energy investment, and education improve environmental sustainability in long-run, while short-run estimates are diverse. Thus, governments of highly polluted economies should increase investment in education, clean energy, and technology to mitigate CO2 emissions.

Nowadays, economic progress has been considered a primary target to compete with other nations at any cost of environmental degradation. But, there may be some alternative solutions to reduce such costs, and the existing literature has not considered such core indicators. Thus, the present study assesses the eco-friendly variables for a sustainable environment in which green finance, green energy, and research and development expenditures. Moreover, this study also focuses on socio-economic factors like economic growth, urbanization, and openness. Time series estimators such as fully modified ordinary least square and Markov switching regression model are employed to investigate selected variables' long-run impact on carbon emissions. The estimated outcomes show the significant contribution of green finance, green energy, openness, and R&D expenditures to environmental quality. Likewise, China's urbanization and economic progress are harmful to environmental quality. Moreover, this study investigates the causal association between the selected variables and shows the two-way causal association between openness and emissions, RE and openness, and green finance and R&D expenditures. The results of the uni-directional association are also interesting. The current study develops some interesting policy implications for a sustainable environment on behalf of empirical outcomes.

The impact of renewable energy and technology innovation on Chinese carbon dioxide emissions

Abstract:Understanding the influencing factors of carbon dioxide emissions is an essential prerequisite for pol- icy makers to maintain sustainable low-carbon economic growth. Based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), we investigate the relationships among economic growth, carbon emission, financial development, renewable energy consumption and technology innovation for China for the period 1965-2018. Our empirical results confirm the presence of a long run relationship among the underlying variables. Our long run estimates show that financial development has negatively significant impacts on carbon emissions, whereas renewable energy and technology innovation have limited impacts on carbon mitigations. In addition, the short run Granger causality analysis reveals that renewable energy consumption has a bidirectional Granger causality with carbon emissions and technology innovations. In the short run, we find that financial development can positively effect China’s carbon mitigation indirectly, via the channels of renewable energy sources and technology innovations. Our results have a number of public policy implications for Chinese policy makers to maintain sustainable low carbon economic development: (i) establish a green finance market to mobilize the social capital into green industry; (ii) continue the environmental law enforcement to control for carbon emissions among energy-intensive industries; (iii) provide government fiscal incentives to promote renewable energy sources on both supply and demand sides of the market.
