Most patients with haemorrhoids can be managed non‐surgically in an office setting, but conventional haemorrhoidectomy is the best option for patients with large symptomatic haemorrhoids.

Abstract:Blueberries (BBs) are perennial fruits belonging to the Ericaceae family. BBs are popular worldwide because of their high concentration of bioactive compounds. BBs have a long history of usage as traditional healthy foods, but their short shelf-life (less than 6 days under non-controlled conditions) is the main reason for their unavailability. Thus, processing BBs to different products is a better option for long time storage. Thus, this review highlighted the nutritional importance of BB fruits and explored potential options for the long-time preservation and consumption of BBs. Moreover, the review addressed the health benefits of BBs and BBs-based food products. BBs exhibited high nutritional composition, especially anthocyanins (123.2–623.89 mg/100 g dry weight). Many processing technologies can be applied to extend the consumption time of BBs, including drying, juicing, producing wine and vinegar, and using them as food additives. BBs powder, juice, and wine are considered the best options to prolong BBs consumption time. Additionally, BBs and their products exert excellent antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anticancer activities. The anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, and anticancer effects are noticeable among all bioactivities. Therefore, developing commercial food products using BBs or BBs-components can increase the health benefits and consumer acceptability.

Abstract:Cranberries are well-known berry fruits and a member of Ericaceae family. It is a potential source of bioactive components including phenolic acids, flavonols, organic acids, pentacyclic triterpenoids, anthocyanins, etc. Until now, several scientific researches uncovered the positive role of cranberry consumption to suppress human diseases including obesity, diabetes, microbial infection, hepatotoxicity, hypertensive and cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and cancer. This review focused on the chemical components of cranberries, as well as comprehensively explored the biological capabilities of cranberries based on recent findings. Furthermore, the health benefits of cranberries were also discussed based on recent clinical studies. Our review reported that cranberries are a rich source of various minerals, vitamins, organic acids, sugars, and polyphenols. Cranberries exert potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiobesity, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer activity via regulating several signaling pathways such as PI3K/Akt/Nrf2, Nrf2/ARE, PI3K/Akt/COX-2, TLR4-NF-kB-p38 MAPK, JAK-STAT, PPARs, TGFβ/Smad, ACE I, and others. Among all bioactivities, antimicrobial activity of cranberries is promising due to bactericidal, bacteriostatic, and antibiofilm properties. Recent clinical studies further confirmed the health benefits and safety, though extensive clinical research are recommended to ensure these effects at the clinical level. Apart from this, consumption of cranberries and their products is suggested because of the rich source of bioactive components to ameliorate biological disorders.

Abstract:Blueberry fruits are rich in anthocyanins. There are 25 known anthocyanidins found in blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) until now. Anthocyanins found in blueberries have attracted considerable interest for their outstanding abilities as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and neuroprotection compounds, as well as their potential for preventing cardiovascular diseases, protecting vision, and inhibiting cancer development. However, their application is constrained by issues related to instability and relatively low bioavailability. Thus, this review provides a detailed overview of categories, functions, stability, and bioavailability of blueberry anthocyanins and their practical applications. The available studies indicate that there is more potential for the industrial production of blueberry anthocyanins.

Abstract:Background Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, which have been studied for many years. Interest in these compounds has grown attributing to their possible therapeutic and beneficial effects, among which are the reduction of coronary heart disease, anticancer/antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects, as well as the improvement of visual acuity and cognitive behavior. However, the chemical instability of anthocyanins is one of the major limitations on their application. Anthocyanins are susceptible to degrade, leading to the loss of color. Several environmental factors could significantly influence the stability of anthocyanins, including temperature, light, oxygen, enzymes, and pH. The instability of anthocyanins would likely result in their poor bioavailability. Scope and approach This review provides critical information for a better understanding of the bioavailability of blueberry anthocyanins. Furthermore, recent findings regarding different approaches to increase the bioavailability of blueberry anthocyanins will be discussed. More than half of the nearly 100 papers cited in this review were published in the last decade. Key Findings and Conclusions The improvement in anthocyanin stability is an important problem that needs to be solved urgently. A major challenge in food applications is to find a strategy to overcome this obstacle of anthocyanin's instability, which could lead to low bioavailability. Therefore, the utilization of different formulations such as nanoparticulate systems, microencapsulation, and protein complexes could potentially improve the bioavailability after ingestion and during digestion. Developing effective novel systems to increase stability of anthocyanins and thus its bioavailability in the human body following ingestion, can enhance its nutraceutical use in the context of prevention and/or cure of diseases.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the health benefits of Chinese bayberry fruits by capturing the chemical compositions of anthocyanins from Chinese bayberry fruits. It investigates the extraction and separation, chemical stability, health benefits, and their applications of anthocyanins from bayberry fruits. Recent scientific evidence has presented that anthocyanins from bayberry play a positive and potential role in the treatment of many various human diseases. Different parts of this plant are commonly used in traditional herbal medicine or folk recipes because of their various pharmacological activities such as the antioxidant, antibacterial, neuroprotective, and anticancer activities. As the number of bioactive compounds identified from bayberry extraction is increasing, the correlative researches of in vivo metabolism and bioavailability, synergies, and competitive effects of bayberry fruit extracts are receiving more and more attention. The chapter explains targeting bioactive substances, developing the commercial treatment, deep processing, and developing pharmaceutical products from bayberry fruits.

Abstract:Blueberry, hailed as an antioxidant superfood, is the fruit of small shrubs in the genus Vaccinium (family Ericaceae). The fruits are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. The antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities derived from the polyphenolic compounds, particularly from the abundantly present anthocyanin pigment, have been highlighted as the major contributing factor to the health-benefitting properties of blueberry. In recent years, blueberry cultivation under polytunnels has expanded, with plastic covers designed to offer protection of crop and fruit yield from suboptimal environmental conditions and birds. An important consideration is that the covers reduce photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and filter out ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is critical for the fruit's bioactive composition. Blueberry fruits grown under covers have been reported to have reduced antioxidant capacity as compared to fruits from open fields. In addition to light, abiotic stresses such as salinity, water deficit, and low temperature trigger accumulation of antioxidants. We highlight in this review how interventions such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), photo-selective films, and exposure of plants to mild stresses, alongside developing new varieties with desired traits, could be used to optimise the nutritional quality, particularly the content of polyphenols, of blueberry grown under covers.

The extraction and purification technology of blueberry anthocyanins is one of the hot spots of research, and new techniques to improve the extraction rate and utilization have been emerging in recent years. This paper reviews the chemical structure, types, extraction and purification techniques, physiological functions and applications of blueberry anthocyanins in the food field, and gives an outlook on the application prospects, in order to provide scientific guidance and theoretical reference for the development and technical improvement of blueberry related products.
A Review on Benefits of Blue Berries

Abstract:The health benefits of fruits have been exploited since ancient days. A healthy diet not only keeps away various chronic diseases and metabolic syndromes but also confers protection from the undesirable side effects of drugs. Habitual consumption of phyto nutrient rich fruits and vegetables is a potential strategy for the prevention or delay of various diseases. Berry fruits are rich in vitamins and antioxidant polyphenolics. Blueberries, in particular, are a rich source of antioxidant flavonoids, dietary fiber, trace elements, and vitamins. Their vast health-promoting potential includes scardio, neuro, hepato, and immuno-protection, making them a preferable dietary interventional choice. Moreover, research has reported that blueberry supplementation improved ocular health offset macular degeneration, and reduced urinary tract infection. The health benefits and nutrient content in this super fruit is summarized in this article.

Abstract:Blueberry is the source of a variety of bioactive substances, including phenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins, pterostilbene, phenolic acids, etc. Several studies have revealed that polyphenols in blueberry have important bioactivities in maintaining health, such as antioxidant and anti-tumor activities, immune regulation, the prevention of chronic diseases, etc. Therefore, these phenolic compounds in blueberries have been widely used in the field of healthcare, and the extraction, isolation, and purification of phenolic compounds are the prerequisites for their utilization. It is imperative to systematically review the research progress and prospects of phenolic compounds present in blueberries. Herein, the latest progress in the extraction, purification, and analysis of phenolic compounds from blueberries is reviewed, which can in turn provide a foundation for further research and usage of blueberries.

Abstract:Functional plant-based foods (such as fruits, vegetables, and berries) can improve health, have a preventive effect, and diminish the risk of different chronic diseases during in vivo and in vitro studies. Berries contain many phytochemicals, fibers, vitamins, and minerals. The primary phytochemicals in berry fruits are phenolic compounds including flavonoids (anthocyanins, flavonols, flavones, flavanols, flavanones, and isoflavonoids), tannins, and phenolic acids. Since berries have a high concentration of polyphenols, it is possible to use them for treating various diseases pharmacologically by acting on oxidative stress and inflammation, which are often the leading causes of diabetes, neurological, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. This review examines commonly consumed berries: blackberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, black raspberries, and strawberries and their polyphenols as potential medicinal foods (due to the presence of pharmacologically active compounds) in the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and other diseases. Moreover, much attention is paid to the bioavailability of active berry components. Hence, this comprehensive review shows that berries and their bioactive compounds possess medicinal properties and have therapeutic potential. Nevertheless, future clinical trials are required to study and improve the bioavailability of berries’ phenolic compounds and extend the evidence that the active compounds of berries can be used as medicinal foods against various diseases.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Awareness of the human health benefits of blueberries is underpinned by a growing body of positive scientific evidence from human observational and clinical research, plus mechanistic research using animal and in vitro models. Blueberries contain a large number of phytochemicals, including abundant anthocyanin pigments. Of their various phytochemicals, anthocyanins probably make the greatest impact on blueberry health functionality. Epidemiological studies associate regular, moderate intake of blueberries and/or anthocyanins with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, death, and type 2 diabetes, and with improved weight maintenance and neuroprotection. These findings are supported by biomarker-based evidence from human clinical studies. Among the more important healthful aspects of blueberries are their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions and their beneficial effects on vascular and glucoregulatory function. Blueberry phytochemicals may affect gastrointestinal microflora and contribute to host health. These aspects have implications in degenerative diseases and conditions as well as the aging process. More evidence, and particularly human clinical evidence, is needed to better understand the potential for anthocyanin-rich blueberries to benefit public health. However, it is widely agreed that the regular consumption of tasty, ripe blueberries can be unconditionally recommended.

Abstract:The fruit-based dietary supplement business is flourishing, and many plant bioactive compounds exhibit beneficial effects on health. Polyphenols, including anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, flavanols, phenolic acids and flavanols in bilberry, blueberry and chokeberry, are the bio-factors that determine the biological activities of the three berries. Many reports on phenolic compounds and their biological activities in berries have been published. Therefore, it is urgent to make a systematic comparison among them. We reviewed these scientific researches about phenolic substances including their compositions, contents and bioavailability from the bilberry, blueberry and chokeberry. On this basis, the phenolic compounds regarding monomer components and their contents in the three berries were systematically summarized. Variations of anthocyanidins within interspecies and different families were explained. Biological properties including biostability and bioavailability of anthocyanin and prospects for further study on berries were contained.
Overview of the distinctive characteristics of strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry in berries, berry wines, and berry spirits

Abstract:Red berries have gained popularity as functional and nutritious food due to their health benefits, leading to increased consumer demand and higher production, totaling over 11,000 ktons for strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries combined in 2021. Nutritionally, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries present high levels of vitamin C (9.7-58.8 mg/100 g dry weight [dw]), folates (6-24 µg/100 g dw), and minerals (96-228 mg/100 g dw). Due to their perishable nature, producers have utilized alcoholic fermentation to extend their shelf life, not only increasing the lifespan of red berries but also attracting consumers through the production of novel beverages. Strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry wines possess low alcohol (5.5-11.1% v/v), high acidity (3.2-17.6 g/L), and interesting bioactive molecules such as phenolic compounds, carotenoids, polysaccharides, and melatonin. Distillation holds tremendous potential for reducing food waste by creating red berry spirits of exceptional quality. Although research on red berry spirits is still in the early stages, future studies should focus on their production and characterization. By incorporating these factors, the production chain would become more sustainable, profitable, and efficient by reducing food waste, capitalizing on consumer acceptance, and leveraging the natural health-promoting characteristics of these products. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of strawberry, blueberry, and red raspberry in berries, wines, and spirits, with a focus on their chemical composition and production methods.

Abstract:Blueberries are an important source of bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds. The growing interest in these berries is associated with their composition rich in anthocyanins, which represent the most widely studied class of phenolic compounds in blueberry. In addition, anthocyanins are known to bringing benefits to consumers’ health, and are also responsible for their attractive and intense blue coloration. In total, forty-three anthocyanins have been identified, being found cyaninidins, delphinidins, malvidins, petunidins, and peonidins with different ligands. However, these compounds are sensitive to light, oxygen, temperature, and pH variations and are highly unstable and susceptible to degradation. An alternative to increase anthocyanin stability is microencapsulation. Different methods are used in the microencapsulation of blueberry compounds, with spray drying being the most widely used. Several studies showed that microencapsulation was efficient and promising method that incorporates and protects bioactive compounds, thereby prolonging their half-life, in addition to increasing their bioavailability and their controlled release in the gastrointestinal system.

Abstract:The consumption of small fruits has increased in recent years. Besides their appealing flavor, the commercial success of small fruits has been partially attributed to their high contents of phenolic compounds with multiple health benefits. The phenolic profiles and contents in small fruits vary based on the genetic background, climate, growing conditions, and post-harvest handling techniques. In this review, we critically compare the profiles and contents of phenolics such as anthocyanins, flavonols, flavan-3-ols, and phenolic acids that have been reported in bilberries, blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, black and red currants, raspberries, and strawberries during fruit development and post-harvest storage. This review offers researchers and breeders a general guideline for the improvement of phenolic composition in small fruits while considering the critical factors that affect berry phenolics from cultivation to harvest and to final consumption.

Abstract:Functional ingredients in blueberry have the best health benefits. To obtain a better understanding of the health role of blueberry in chronic disease, we conducted systematic preventive strategies for functional ingredients in blueberry, based on comprehensive databases, especially PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI for the period 2008–2018. Blueberry is rich in flavonoids (mainly anthocyanidins), polyphenols (procyanidin), phenolic acids, pyruvic acid, chlorogenic acid, and others, which have anticancer, anti-obesity, prevent degenerative diseases, anti-inflammation, protective properties for vision and liver, prevent heart diseases, antidiabetes, improve brain function, protective lung properties, strong bones, enhance immunity, prevent cardiovascular diseases, and improve cognitive decline. The anthocyanins and polyphenols in blueberry are major functional ingredients for preventive chronic disease. These results support findings that blueberry may be one of the best functional fruits, and further reveals the mechanisms of anthocyanins and polyphenols in the health role of blueberry for chronic disease. This paper may be used as scientific evidence for developing functional foods, nutraceuticals, and novel drugs of blueberry for preventive chronic diseases.

Abstract:As a highly economic berry fruit crop, blueberry is enjoyed by most people and has various potential health benefits, many of which are attributed to the relatively high concentrations of flavonoids. To obtain more accurate and comprehensive transcripts, the full-length transcriptome of half-highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum/angustifolium cultivar Northland) obtained using single molecule real-time and next-generation sequencing technologies was reported for the first time. Overall, 147,569 consensus transcripts (average length, 2738 bp; N50, 3176 bp) were obtained. After quality control steps, 63,425 high-quality isoforms were obtained and 5030 novel genes, 3002 long non-coding RNAs, 3946 transcription factor genes (TFs), 30,540 alternative splicing events, and 2285 fusion gene pairs were identified. To better explore the molecular mechanism of flavonoid biosynthesis in mature blueberry fruit, an integrative analysis of the metabolome and transcriptome was performed on the exocarp, sarcocarp, and seed. A relatively complete biosynthesis pathway map of phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and proanthocyanins in blueberry was constructed. The results of the joint analysis showed that the 228 functional genes and 42 TFs regulated 78 differentially expressed metabolites within the biosynthesis pathway of phenylpropanoids/flavonoids. O2PLS analysis results showed that the key metabolites differentially accumulated in blueberry fruit tissues were albireodelphin, delphinidin 3,5-diglucoside, delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside, and delphinidin 3-O-sophoroside, and 10 structural genes (4 Vc4CLs, 3 VcBZ1s, 1 VcUGT75C1, 1 VcAT, and 1 VcUGAT), 4 transporter genes (1 VcGSTF and 3 VcMATEs), and 10 TFs (1 VcMYB, 2 VcbHLHs, 4 VcWD40s, and 3 VcNACs) exhibited strong correlations with 4 delphinidin glycosides. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of flavonoid biosynthesis and accumulation in blueberry fruit.

The present review addresses the availability of blueberry crop residues (BCR), applications of this feedstock in bioprocess for obtaining range of value-added products, to offer economic viability, business development and market potential, challenges and future perspectives. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article addressing the blueberry waste valorization for a sustainable circular bioeconomy. Furthermore, it covers the information on the alternative BCR valorization methods and production of biochar for environmental management through removal or mitigation of organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated sites. The review also discusses the ample opportunities of strategic utilization of BCR to offer solutions for environmental sustenance, covers the emerging trends to produce multi-products and techno-economic prospective for sustainable agronomy.

Abstract:Fresh and processed fruits are commonly used to prepare different industrial products with superior nutritional and health-promoting properties. Currently, the demand for processed-fruit products has motivated the rapid growth of fruit-processing industries, persuading them to produce an enormous number of by-products. Furthermore, people’s shifting dietary habits and lack of awareness of nutritional properties result in a large number of fruit by-products. The lack of knowledge about the value of by-products urges the exploration of proper documents that emphasize the health benefits of such products. Hence, this article was prepared by carefully reviewing the recent literature on industrial applications of fruit by-products and their nutritional and health-promoting properties. The use of fruit by-products in food industries for various purposes has been reported in the past and has been reviewed and described here. Fruit by-products are a good source of nutrients and bioactive components, including polyphenols, dietary fibers, and vitamins, implying that they could have an important role for novel, value-added functional food properties. Furthermore, fruit by-products are used as the substrate to produce organic acids, essential oils, enzymes, fuel, biodegradable packaging materials, and preservatives.

Abstract:Blackberry (Rubus sp.) fruit contains high levels of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds, mainly flavonols and ellagitannins, which contribute to its high antioxidant capacity and other biological activities. Blackberry phenolic composition and concentrations are known to be influenced by genetics, growing conditions, and maturation. Despite the current knowledge of their chemistry, research specific to blackberry phenolic compounds' health benefits, metabolism, bioavailability, and mechanism by which they confer health benefits is scarce. Blackberry phenolic compounds have protective effects on age-related neurodegenerative diseases and bone loss in vivo and can inhibit low-density lipoprotein and liposomal oxidation in vitro. Blackberry extracts have also exerted antimutagenic effects in vitro and in vivo by modifying cell signaling pathways and suppressing tumor promotion factors. However, the antiobesity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties of blackberry phenolic compounds need investigation. Similarly, studies that elucidate the in vivo physiologically effective concentrations of blackberry phenolic compounds are necessary.
