Abstract:Multimodal discourse analysis is the analysis of different symbolic modes within a text, which breaks through many limitations of traditional discourse analysis to a great extent. This paper takes the visual grammar of Kress and Leeuwen as the theoretical framework, which gives a good explanation of the reproducing meaning, interactive meaning and composition meaning of image discourse, which is also suitable for the analysis of news picture discourse. This paper expounds how other symbolic resources interact with each other, so as to construct a complete text with linguistic symbols, and then convey more social interactive meaning. The results show that visual grammar is feasible and operational in the analysis of multimodal news texts. The background and text of news discourse can be effectively supplemented and explained, and it is of great significance to improve readers' pictures’ reading ability.

Abstract:In terms of cross-cultural exchanges, the film is not only an important embodiment of a country's cultural soft power but also the most direct and favorable way of communication. The advent of the all-around well-off era has propelled people's demand for spiritual, cultural, and entertainment which promotes the vigorous development of the film culture industry. The expansion and development of China's film market, domestic films, are a reflection and extension of China's culture and ideas. It plays an extremely important role in enhancing cultural self-confidence and cultural output. In order to better grasp the emotional tendency of the audience, understand the viewing needs, and put forward suggestions on domestic film production, it is very necessary to analyze the emotion of film reviews and dig deep into semantics. Since the evaluation of film works considers many factors that are complex and changeable, the choice of model plays a significant role in the process of emotion analysis. The deep learning model represented by a deep neural network has high tolerance to sentence noise, has strong information discrimination, and features self-learning ability. It also has great advantages in emotion classification tasks. This study conducts an in-depth study and research on the traditional emotion analysis methods and finally puts forward an effective emotion analysis framework that combines the traditional emotion analysis method and deep learning network. This framework enhances the text vectorization representation and emotion classification model by performing emotion analysis. The effectiveness is verified by corresponding experiments which justify the superiority of the approach.

Abstract:Chinese discourse has attracted considerable scholarly attention from communication and discourse researchers during the last decade. For discourse analysis, conspicuously neglected from the existing body of literature is the systematic investigation of multimodal semiotic resources. As multimodality has become the norm in most, if not all, spheres of communication, a large part of meaning is carried by other semiotic resources, such as visual images, facial expressions, gestures, and intonation. Consequently, the exclusive focus on language may lose essential aspects of meaning, and subsequent interpretations of communicative effects, cultural values and ideology may be partial or incorrect. As Kress (2003: 11) points out, ‘we cannot now hope to understand written texts by looking at the resources of writing alone. They must be looked at in the context of the choice of modes made, the modes which appear with writing, and even the context of which modes were not chosen’. Similarly, Jewitt (2009: 3) observes that ‘speech and writing no longer appear adequate in understanding representation and communication in a variety of fields’. Therefore, it can be argued that studying multimodal discourse is an imperative and logical next step for Chinese discourse research.

Abstract:Lim (2019) states that one challenge for the researchers in multimodal discourse analysis is to describe and discuss the interplay across various semiotic resources. English micro-lectures, as a kind of popular and widespread teaching materials in the information age, are typical multimodal discourses involving multi-semiotic resources. This article adopts the systemic-functional synthetic framework for multimodal discourse analysis from Zhang Delu (2018) to explore the relationship of various modes involved in excellent English micro-lectures and further examine how the semiotic resources cooperate and interact to construct communicative meaning. By analyzing and interpreting the context of culture, the meaning, the lexico-grammar, the media and the substance systems of involved modes in micro-lectures, it proves that English micro-lectures demonstrate complicated intersemiosis and various modes cooperate in a perfect way in meaning construction. This comprehensive investigation of semiotic systems sheds light on teachers’ mode choice and teaching design in producing micro-lectures and students’ learning strategies of micro-lectures in the mobile-assisted learning environment.

Abstract:As a typical multimodal discourse, a video can construct its meaning through various modalities, such as image, sound, action, and language. From the perspective of systemic functional grammar, taking the visual grammar of Kress & van Leeuwen as the theoretical framework, this paper analyzes the multimodal video “Union Is Strength” from the representational meaning, interactional meaning and compositional meaning, and discusses the meaning construction of the multimodality such as image and speech. The study has found that the video constructs union is strength in a variety of narrative ways, and union can realize the theme significance of the weak winning over the strong.

Abstract:People share their opinions, stories, and reviews through online video sharing websites every day. The automatic analysis of these online opinion videos is bringing new or understudied research challenges to the field of computational linguistics and multimodal analysis. Among these challenges is the fundamental question of exploiting the dynamics between visual gestures and verbal messages to be able to better model sentiment. This article addresses this question in four ways: introducing the first multimodal dataset with opinion-level sentiment intensity annotations; studying the prototypical interaction patterns between facial gestures and spoken words when inferring sentiment intensity; proposing a new computational representation, called multimodal dictionary, based on a language-gesture study; and evaluating the authors' proposed approach in a speaker-independent paradigm for sentiment intensity prediction. The authors' study identifies four interaction types between facial gestures and verbal content: neutral, emphasizer, positive, and negative interactions. Experiments show statistically significant improvement when using multimodal dictionary representation over the conventional early fusion representation (that is, feature concatenation).

Abstract:Film is an essential expression of a country's cultural soft power in terms of cross-cultural exchange. In addition, film is also the most direct and favourable means of communication. Along with the expansion and development of the Chinese film market, outstanding animation films have emerged in recent years. Animated films have both artistic and commercial properties and can not only have a cultural impact but can also contribute to economic growth. For this reason, our country is now paying more and more attention to the development of animated films. Specifically, animated films not only represent a country's cultural soft power and national image, but they are also a symbol of the strength of a country's cultural industry. As a reflection and extension of China's culture and ideology, animated films play an important role in enhancing cultural confidence and cultural export. In recent years, China's economy has shown a steady and sustained growth trend. At the same time, with the rapid development of internet technology, social networking has gradually penetrated into all aspects of people's lives. Various social networking forums, websites, and sites have emerged. While satisfying a wide range of needs, they also provide information on product reviews, social reviews, and service reviews. These reviews contain feedback from the reviewer about the subject of the review. Tapping into the emotions in these reviews can provide consumers with shopping references and help businesses to optimise their products and improve their business strategies. With the help of modern internet technology and information technology, the modern movie industry, such as Cat's Eye Movies and other internet entertainment service platforms, has developed a model of online ticketing, offline movie viewing, and online reviews and feedback. The content of the reviews on these movie websites fully reflects the attitudinal views of the movie-going community. These reviews play a decisive role in the box office and the further spread of culture. As a result, in order to better understand the audience's emotional tendencies and needs, it is necessary to carry out sentiment analysis and deep semantic mining of animated film reviews. As the evaluation of film works considers many factors and is complex and variable, the choice of model is crucial in the process of sentiment analysis. Machine learning models represented by deep neural networks are more tolerant of sentence noise and have strong information discrimination and feature self-learning capabilities. As a result, intelligent machine learning is more advantageous for sentiment classification tasks. This study is a combination of textual data mining and statistical analysis from the perspective of viewers' comments to study the online reviews of animation films from different countries. At the same time, this research hopes to uncover meaningful information from the film reviews and the gap between Chinese and other countries' animation films, in order to provide a little help for the rise of domestic animation films.

Abstract:This article provides rich insights into the process of data generation for discourse analysis from three separate studies of the video recordings of a single science classroom in action. The central claim is that multimodal transcription can contribute to developments in discourse theory. A three-stage reflective heuristic is developed and used in the article to support meta-methodological discussion on different researchers' negotiations with the complexity of the video data. The focus is how the different researchers attended to modalities of meaning making (e.g. speech, learning artefacts, whiteboard notes, gestures, bodily actions) and appropriated, adapted and transformed their theoretical framework in order to construct the transcripts for each study. The three-stage heuristic is shown to facilitate transparency in analytic decision-making and is recommended for promoting much needed discussion on processes of data generation for discourse analysis that draws upon video recordings of action in situ.

Abstract:Reading English is required for high school students to gain language proficiency, enhance their cultural awareness, and broaden their global perspective. This study incorporates the theory of multimodal discourse analysis into English reading teaching for high school students based on the principles of social semiotics and systemic functional linguistics. The results indicate that utilizing multimodal discourse analysis theory in high school English reading enhances students' focus in class and boosts their English reading scores. Additionally, it facilitates their comprehension of text information and establishes a solid basis for developing multiple literacies. Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet and multimedia services in the past decade, a huge amount of user-generated and service provider-generated multimedia data become available. These data are heterogeneous and multi-modal in nature, imposing great challenges for processing and analyzing them. Multi-modal data consist of a mixture of various types of data from different modalities such as texts, images, videos, audios etc. In this article, we present a deep and comprehensive overview for multi-modal analysis in multimedia. We introduce two scientific research problems, data-driven correlational representation and knowledge-guided fusion for multimedia analysis. To address the two scientific problems, we investigate them from the following aspects: 1) multi-modal correlational representation: multi-modal fusion of data across different modalities, and 2) multi-modal data and knowledge fusion: multi-modal fusion of data with domain knowledge. More specifically, on data-driven correlational representation, we highlight three important categories of methods, such as multi-modal deep representation, multi-modal transfer learning, and multi-modal hashing. On knowledge-guided fusion, we discuss the approaches for fusing knowledge with data and four exemplar applications that require various kinds of domain knowledge, including multi-modal visual question answering, multi-modal video summarization, multi-modal visual pattern mining and multi-modal recommendation. Finally, we bring forward our insights and future research directions.

Abstract:Visual-textual sentiment analysis could benefit user understanding in online social networks and enable many useful applications like user profiling and recommendation. However, it faces a set of new challenges, i.e., exacerbated noise problem caused by irrelevant or redundant information in different modalities, and the gap in joint understanding for multimodal sentiment. In this article, we propose hierarchical cross-modality interaction model for visual-textual sentiment analysis. Our model emphasises the consistency and correlation across modalities, by extracting the semantic and sentiment interactions between image and text in a hierarchical way, which could cope with the noise and joint understanding issues, respectively. Hierarchical attention mechanism is first adopted to capture the semantic interaction and purify the information in one modality with the help of the other. Then, multimodal convolutional neural network, which could fully exploit cross-modality sentiment interaction is incorporated, and better joint visual-textual representation is generated. A transfer learning method is further designed to alleviate the impact of noises in real social data. Through extensive experiments on two datasets, we show that our proposed framework greatly surpasses the state-of-the-art approaches. Specifically, the phrase-level text fragment plays an important role in interacting with image regions for joint visual-textual sentiment analysis.

Abstract:Films and TV series are popular cultural products with massive global audiences. They construct and reflect social realities, invite audience engagement and create other discourses such as fan reactions, critics’ comments or ‘water cooler conversations’. They are also increasingly sophisticated narratives, with complex characters and plots. The language used in TV/film texts is consumed by billions of viewers world-wide. These are only some of the reasons why such texts are worthy of discourse analysis. At the same time, such narratives integrate multiple meaning-making resources, not just language, and therefore invite a multimodal approach. This chapter considers issues arising in corpus linguistic studies of televisual and filmic texts. Because of their global reach the focus is on English-language products. I will start by addressing general issues before discussing a small case study.

Abstract:In the circumstance of social big data, sentiment analysis is attracting increasing attention for its capacity in understanding individuals' attitudes and feelings. Traditional sentiment analysis methods focus on single modality and become ineffective as enormous data are emerging on the social websites with multiple manifestations. In this article, multimodal learning approaches are proposed to capture the relations between image and text, which only stay at the region level and ignore the fact that the channels are also closely correlated with the semantic information. In addition, social images in the social platforms are closely connected by various types of relations, which are also conducice to sentiment classification but neglected by most existing works. In this article, we propose an attention-based heterogeneous relational model to improve the multimodal sentiment analysis performance by incorporating rich social information. Specifically, we propose a progressive dual attention module to capture the correlations between image and text, and then learn the joint image-text representation from the perspective of content information. A channel attention schema is proposed here to highlight semantically rich image channels and a region attention schema is further designed to highlight the emotional regions based on the attended channels. After that, we construct a heterogeneous relation network and extend graph convolutional network to aggregate the content information from social contexts as complements to learn high-quality representations of social images. Our proposal is thoroughly evaluated on two benchmark datasets, and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model.

Eyes Wide Shut? Exploring the Visual Shortcomings of Multimodal LLMs

Abstract:Is vision good enough for language? Recent advancements in multimodal models primarily stem from the powerful reasoning abilities of large language models (LLMs). However, the visual component typically depends only on the instance-level contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP). Our research reveals that the visual capabilities in recent multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) still exhibit systematic shortcomings. To understand the roots of these errors, we explore the gap between the visual embedding space of CLIP and vision-only self-supervised learning. We identify ''CLIP-blind pairs'' - images that CLIP perceives as similar despite their clear visual differences. With these pairs, we construct the Multimodal Visual Patterns (MMVP) benchmark. MMVP exposes areas where state-of-the-art systems, including GPT-4V, struggle with straightforward questions across nine basic visual patterns, often providing incorrect answers and hallucinated explanations. We further evaluate various CLIP-based vision-and-language models and found a notable correlation between visual patterns that challenge CLIP models and those problematic for multimodal LLMs. As an initial effort to address these issues, we propose a Mixture of Features (MoF) approach, demonstrating that integrating vision self-supervised learning features with MLLMs can significantly enhance their visual grounding capabilities. Together, our research suggests visual representation learning remains an open challenge, and accurate visual grounding is crucial for future successful multimodal systems.

Discourse Parsing in Videos: A Multi-modal Appraoch

Abstract:Text-level discourse parsing aims to unmask how two sentences in the text are related to each other. We propose the task of Visual Discourse Parsing, which requires understanding discourse relations among scenes in a video. Here we use the term scene to refer to a subset of video frames that can better summarize the video. In order to collect a dataset for learning discourse cues from videos, one needs to manually identify the scenes from a large pool of video frames and then annotate the discourse relations between them. This is clearly a time consuming, expensive and tedious task. In this work, we propose an approach to identify discourse cues from the videos without the need to explicitly identify and annotate the scenes. We also present a novel dataset containing 310 videos and the corresponding discourse cues to evaluate our approach. We believe that many of the multi-discipline AI problems such as Visual Dialog and Visual Storytelling would greatly benefit from the use of visual discourse cues.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to multimodal sentiment analysis using deep neural networks combining visual analysis and natural language processing. Our goal is different than the standard sentiment analysis goal of predicting whether a sentence expresses positive or negative sentiment; instead, we aim to infer the latent emotional state of the user. Thus, we focus on predicting the emotion word tags attached by users to their Tumblr posts, treating these as "self-reported emotions." We demonstrate that our multimodal model combining both text and image features outperforms separate models based solely on either images or text. Our model's results are interpretable, automatically yielding sensible word lists associated with emotions. We explore the structure of emotions implied by our model and compare it to what has been posited in the psychology literature, and validate our model on a set of images that have been used in psychology studies. Finally, our work also provides a useful tool for the growing academic study of images - both photographs and memes - on social networks.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, with the rapid development of NLP (Natural Language Processing) and deep learning, public opinion and public opinion on the Internet have decreased a lot compared to the past. Many Internet users have changed from mere "bystanders" to disseminators of Internet information. Movie review sentiment analysis technology is an emerging category in the field of information mining. More and more people have joined the "review army". The quality of a movie is closely related to movie reviews! The manual screening method not only consumes a lot of manpower and material resources, but also is inefficient. Therefore, the use of deep learning-based sentiment analysis has become the current general trend. Based on the principle of word mosaic (word vector) and deep learning, this paper proposes a movie review sentiment analysis technology based on deep learning and machine learning word mosaic. Experiments show that the method used in this article has reached the correct rate of emotional classification of movie reviews. 83.13%, the experimental results prove the practicability and scalability of this method and the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:As the internet and education technologies boom, second language teaching has been witnessing profound changes. The second language instruction video is one of the changes mentioned. This paper aims to construct a framework to study the instruction videos based on the Visual Grammar Theory of Social Semiotics and Power Distance theory and then applies this framework to the analysis of prize-winning instruction videos in China, so as to find out the features in narration, representational meaning, interactive meaning, compositional meaning and the ideology behind the videos. The significance of this study is twofold, one is to illustrate that video analysis should be done with reference to cultural theories and an analytical framework should be built according to a specific genre. The other is to discuss how to effectively build the identity of teachers in the digital era, and provide some suggestions for future police discourse practice.
