Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a promising pyrolysed carbon-enriched soil amendment and has excellent properties for agriculture production and to remediate environmental pollution. A set of reviews were conducted on biochar production by pyrolysis process from various waste biomass which has drawn extensive interest due to the low cost of production with several benefits. As many potential technologies have been developed, there are still several knowledge gaps that have been identified for some key points to contribute a comprehensive study towards soil fertility, nutrient and water retention, soil microbial activity, plant growth and yield, pollution remediation, mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and an improvement in the farmer’s economy to achieve maximum profit by adopting environmentally friendly technique “pyrolysis”. Therefore, this review explored a detailed study on food waste biochar production by the pyrolysis process and its impact on different applications as an amendment. Slow pyrolysis process at low and medium temperatures is a potential amendment for agriculture production and soil and water remediation by enhancing biochar properties like carbon, BET surface area, cation exchange capacity, zeta potential, and nutrient content, etc. with minimum ash content. The biochar enhances soil water and nutrient retention capacity, crop yield, and improved microbial community at different soil quality. Additionally, food waste to biochar is a realistic adsorbent and economical carbon sequester to mitigate GHG emissions. This review conducted a brief assessment of the knowledge gaps and future research directions for researchers, encouraging investigators, stakeholders, and policymakers to make the best possible decision for food waste valorization.

Abstract:Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of biomass residues under limited oxygen conditions. In recent years, biochar as an amendment has received increasing attention on composting and soil remediation, due to its unique properties such as chemical recalcitrance, high porosity and sorption capacity, and large surface area. This paper provides an overview on the impact of biochar on the chemical characteristics (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, decomposition and humification of organic matter) and microbial community structure during composting of organic wastes. This review also discusses the use of biochar for remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants and heavy metals as well as related mechanisms. Besides its aging, the effects of biochar on the environment fate and efficacy of pesticides deserve special attention. Moreover, the combined application of biochar and compost affects synergistically on soil remediation and plant growth. Abstract:The transformation of agricultural waste into biochar that is both eco-friendly and cost-effective is not only a wise recycling strategy but also a solution to environmental pollution management. Due to its low cost, high efficiency, simplicity of use, ecological sustainability, and reliability in terms of public safety, biochar from agricultural residues can be a useful alternative technique for controlling contaminants. Biochars have achieved significant progress in the following areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing soil nutrient dispersion, sequestering atmospheric carbon into the soil, increasing agricultural productivity, and reducing the bioavailability of environmental contaminants. A comprehensive scientific assessment of the relationship between the properties of biochars and their impact on soil properties, environmental pollutant remediation, plant growth, yield, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses is warranted by recent advancements in the understanding of biochars. The primary factors influencing biochar's properties are the feedstock nature, heat transfer rate, residence duration, and pyrolysis temperature. The efficacy of biochar in the management of pollutants is significantly influenced by its elemental composition, ion-exchange capacity, pore size distribution, and surface area, which are contingent upon the nature of the feedstock, preparation conditions, and procedures. The chapter investigated the potential of biochar derived from agricultural refuse as a viable alternative for the long-term application of biochar in the environment, soil conditioning, and the remediation of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Biochar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, has been suggested as a mean to combat climate change, and at the same time to achieve agricultural and environmental benefits. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil nutrient retention and nutrient availability, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper briefly reviewed and synthesized recent findings and discussions regarding the production and characteristics of biochar, its effects on global climate change and particularly in relation to the environmental effects of biochar in soils. Agronomic benefits of biochar application are critically highlighted because researches show that biochar had varied effects on crop productivity thorough the different bio-physical interactions between the biochar and the soils, which are deserved for further investigations. Potential pitfalls and knowledge gaps were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and the effects of biochar in agricultural ecosystem.

Abstract:Global warming and associated climate change are becoming a threat to almost all the ecosystems on the earth. According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) special report 2019, the global mean surface (land and ocean) temperature has been increased by 0.87 °C while mean of land surface air temperature has increased by 1.53 °C since 1850–2015. Climate change is affecting food security and human life due to warming, changing precipitation patterns, and the greater frequency of some extreme events. The main cause of global warming is the continuous increase in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) like CO2, CH4, N2O and fluorinated gases due to several anthropogenic activities. Therefore, reducing the increasing concentration of GHG is necessary to slow down global warming and climate change. Among several options of greenhouse mitigation, application of biochar into the soil is gaining popularity due to several advantages over other options. Biochar is a highly stable form of carbon derived from pyrolysis of biomass at relatively low temperatures. Application of biochar into the soil has been reported to provide multiple benefits like increase in crop yield, nutrient and water use efficiency and several environmental benefits. Recalcitrant nature, relatively higher carbon content and easily available feedstock make biochar a highly sustainable and quick option for carbon sequestration into the soil. Biochar application into the soil not only helps in carbon sequestration but also provides a better option for managing agricultural residues. The application of biochar has also reported for reducing a considerable amount of methane and nitrous oxide emission from the agricultural field due to its priming effect on the soil. Biochar yield, physical properties, and carbon content varies with the type of feedstock and pyrolysis condition. Therefore, the rate of carbon sequestration and mitigation of greenhouse gas is also highly variable, however, the biochar application ultimately leads to a positive contribution towards climate change mitigation. However, most of the reported benefits are confined to laboratory and field trial at institute level, widespread adoption of biochar on farmer’s field is still lacking. In the present chapter, all the aspects of biochar towards carbon sequestration and greenhouse mitigation have been well discussed.

Abstract:Biochar generation from biomass pyrolysis is an appealing and practical technology for storing carbon and lowering the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Carbon recalcitrance in biochar, also known as biochar stability, is an important feature that determines carbon sequestration capacity. Further, the stability of biochar affects the varying process parameter, which flatters the frontier of biochar study. Also, the properties of biochar substantially alter with the various parameters such as operating constraints, types of feedstock, reactors types, etc. In this review, the stability of biochar is explored in-depth, as well as how and why biomass handling variables such as pyrolysis temperature and reaction residence time, compositions and physicochemical properties impact on it. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) of biochar are also highlighted in this review. This review invalidates the failure of current research to give weight to such important concerns in the exposure of TEA and LCA to biochar production. According to this review, relatively high temperatures (400–900 °C), extended residence and holding times, moderate heating rates, certain minerals, and biomass feedstock with a high lignin content and big particle size are desirable for biochar stability. However, the trade-offs between biochar stability and other potential improvements are mediated by constraints. The compromises between the stability of biochar and other possible gains are mediated by obstacles. In addition to carbon nanotubes, capacitors, energy storage devices, and bio-adsorbents, strategies have been developed to promote the use of biochar as a tool to mitigate climate change. The goal of this review is to improve and commercialize biochar technology to fulfill the needs of many industries; it help to the researcher particularly interested in the thermochemical alteration of feeds and the creation of novel pyrolyzer.

Abstract:With increased interest in scientific investigations and large-scale applications of lignocellulosic biomass derived biochar for environmental management, a comprehensive understanding of its function in the fragile earth environment is urgently needed. The study on the relationship between biochar properties and potential applications requires continuing research. This review provides new insights into the state-of-the-art accomplishments in the utilization of biochar in environmental management and covers three perspectives: firstly, mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as sequestration of CO2 and CH4 in global carbon pools and mitigation of N2O emissions; secondly, pollution control, including adsorptive removal and reactive removal of inorganic and organic contaminants; thirdly, potential negative aspects of biochar applications, including contaminations originated from biochar, negative alterations to soil properties and soil biota, negative impacts of biochar on GHG emissions and negative impacts of biochar migration. From a unique and comprehensive environmental perspective, this article aims to provide a critical review of updated knowledge on both positive and negative impacts of biochar for environmental management, based on an exponentially increased number of publications on the topic over the past decade.

Abstract:Biomass waste generation is increasing enormously and biomass burning emits greenhouse gas emissions causing severe effects on the environment and health of the population. It contains high organic and carbon content which can be reused/diverted for useful products (like Biochar) that facilitate climate change mitigation. Biochar, a renewable carbon, is gaining importance and it opens up an area of research to explore on the properties and stability of biochar, its wide applications, impacts on soil characteristics, techno-economic details, carbon and nitrogen interactions of biochar-soil matrix, and emission control. This review addresses opportunities of biomass wastes for biochar production, various thermo-chemical reactions for preparation and its basics/mechanisms, properties of biochar and hydrochar, and gaps/operational challenges, and summarizes wide applications of biochar in soil improvement, climate change mitigation, energy production, waste management, and environmental remediation. The effect of physico-chemical parameters (temperature, heating rate, chemical composition, etc.) on the biochar production will help in valorizing this industry. The optimized process conditions involved in low temperature (torrefaction, microwave-assisted pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization), pyrolysis (Fast, Slow, Flash), gasification, and combustion processes for biochar, syngas, and bio-oil production are to be explored. The critical review on the biochar addition influence on CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions in various soil types and carbon sequestration is done here. The modification and activation of biochar are recently attractive due to their role in improving biochar quality and for expanding its applications. Limitations and future status of biochar production from biomass waste are highlighted. Biochar will be a promising solution as an alternative to fossil fuels, waste management, bioenergy, and combat climate change.

Abstract:Biochar, a pyrolyzed product of biomass, is richer in aromatic carbon (C) and poorer in oxygen which provides structural recalcitrance to it against microbial decomposition in soil. Biochar, being a stable source of C when applied to soil, remains there for longer period of time imparting long-term soil C sequestration. This sequestering effect of biochar has another advantage to mitigate climate change by reducing emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from soil. Both the interconnected processes imparted by biochar have its prominent role in climate resilience and environmental sustainability. Researchers around the world have been focusing on this aspect; thus revealing new facts and findings on managing biochar in agriculture. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to describe the biochar-governed mechanisms on emission of GHGs from soil, how the structural and functional properties of biochar regulates that, and the other associated factors like feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature during biochar preparation and soil inherent properties controlling various processes. Similarly, highlights of C sequestration potential of biochar made up of different crop/animal residues and other regulating factors have been described. Increase in pyrolysis temperature and switching over from manure to wood as a feedstock for biochar production increase the stability of biochar and reduce emission of GHGs from soil. The soils low in organic matter trigger C mineralization than that with high organic matter content. Biochar in presence of N fertilizer is reported to enhance CH4 sink/decrease source strength of soil. The strongest effect of biochar on enhancing C sequestration and reducing GHGs emission is evident when it is applied in acid soils than alkaline soils. Both the concurrent processes of C sequestration and GHGs emission bring sanity to soil by physically more stable, enriching soil fertility, biologically more active and resulting to enhanced soil quality and lowering the C-footprint in agroecosystems.

In this context, the realm of agriculture confronts formidable challenges in its pursuit of soil resource reclamation, improving water quality, mitigating climate change, and maintaining soil and natural resources for posterity. Central to these aspirations is the preservation of an optimum organic matter, serving as a linchpin threshold is crucial for protecting the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the soil, while simultaneously sustaining agricultural productivity. To address these multifaceted challenges, the introduction of diverse organic amendments has emerged as a crucial strategy. Noteworthy among these is the application of biochar, which functions as a soil conditioner capable of bolstering soil health, mitigating the impact of climate change, and securing global food security. Biochar is a carbon-enriched substance produced through pyrolysis of assorted biomass waste. It has a larger surface area, higher cation exchange capacity, and an extended carbon storage capability. Abstract:In the context of climate change and the circular economy, biochar has recently found many applications in various sectors as a versatile and recycled material. Here, we review application of biochar-based for carbon sink, covering agronomy, animal farming, anaerobic digestion, composting, environmental remediation, construction, and energy storage. The ultimate storage reservoirs for biochar are soils, civil infrastructure, and landfills. Biochar-based fertilisers, which combine traditional fertilisers with biochar as a nutrient carrier, are promising in agronomy. The use of biochar as a feed additive for animals shows benefits in terms of animal growth, gut microbiota, reduced enteric methane production, egg yield, and endo-toxicant mitigation. Biochar enhances anaerobic digestion operations, primarily for biogas generation and upgrading, performance and sustainability, and the mitigation of inhibitory impurities. In composts, biochar controls the release of greenhouse gases and enhances microbial activity. Co-composted biochar improves soil properties and enhances crop productivity. Pristine and engineered biochar can also be employed for water and soil remediation to remove pollutants. In construction, biochar can be added to cement or asphalt, thus conferring structural and functional advantages. Incorporating biochar in biocomposites improves insulation, electromagnetic radiation protection and moisture control. Finally, synthesising biochar-based materials for energy storage applications requires additional functionalisation.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a significant interest on biochar for various environmental applications, e.g., pollutants removal, carbon sequestration, and soil amelioration. Biochar has several unique properties, which makes it an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly material for diverse contaminants removal. The variability in physicochemical properties (e.g., surface area, microporosity, and pH) provides an avenue for biochar to maximize its efficacy to targeted applications. This review aims to highlight the vital role of surface architecture of biochar in different environmental applications. Particularly, it provides a critical review of current research updates related to the pollutants interaction with surface functional groups of biochars and the effect of the parameters variability on biochar attributes pertinent to specific pollutants removal, involved mechanisms, and competence for these removals. Moreover, future research directions of biochar research are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract: Biochar has garnered considerable attention in recent times due to its potential uses in the environmental field. In this study, we comprehensively examine and condense information on biochar production, characteristics, and adsorption mechanisms, with a focus on its economic applications for remediating hazardous contaminants. Our assessment is based on over 200 publications from the past decade. Biochar, a carbon-rich material, can be derived from various organic waste sources, such as food waste and urban sewage sludge. Researchers are particularly interested in biochar due to its high carbon content, cation exchange capacity, substantial specific surface area, and stable structure. We investigate how the physical and chemical properties of biochar may vary based on the feedstock used, providing a comprehensive overview of biochar and its composition for pollution remediation. The review also discusses common techniques such as gasification, hydrothermal carbonization, and pyrolysis used to produce biochar. We analyze current research on the mechanisms involved in pollutant treatment using biochar and its composites while also addressing future directions in biochar research.

Abstract:Biochar has emerged as a promising soil supplement, offering a sustainable solution for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agricultural soils over the past two decades. Produced through the pyrolysis of organic materials under anaerobic conditions, biochar's quality is heavily influenced by pyrolysis conditions and feedstock types. This comprehensive review investigates the biochar's potential to reduce GHG emissions from agricultural soils and explores sustainable production methods and innovative technologies to combat climate change. This study highlights biochar's impacts on soil quality, carbon storage, microbial activity, and GHG emissions as a soil supplement that reduces agricultural GHG emissions. Addressing historical research gaps, the investigation proposes comprehensive biochar soil management studies to mitigate global warming since agriculture contributes considerably to global emissions. The review highlights the necessity of co-existing GHG emission data and computer analysis of their warming potentials, along with aging studies on biochar production. Stressing the importance of distinguishing biochar-induced changes from inherent soil features, the review advocates for effective GHG emission-reducing management techniques. Additionally, it calls for the development of tracking and monitoring methods to identify carbon storage locations, trace carbon dioxide origins, and evaluate biochar's impact on soil ecosystem GHG flow. To achieve significant reductions in GHG emissions, the review suggests analyzing the dynamics of biochar generation and related processes to gain insights into their long-term effects. By promoting sustainable solutions to mitigate soil and agriculture-based emissions, this review aims to support provincial and federal governments in meeting their carbon reduction targets outlined in the Paris Agreement.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities have caused irreversible consequences on our planet, including climate change and environmental pollution. Nevertheless, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and capturing carbon can mitigate global warming. Biochar and hydrochar are increasingly used for soil remediation due to their stable adsorption qualities. As soil amendments, these materials improve soil quality and reduce water loss, prevent cracking and shrinkage, and interact with microbial communities, resulting in a promising treatment method for reducing gas emissions from the top layer of soil. However, during long-term studies, contradictory results were found, suggesting that higher biochar application rates led to higher soil CO 2 effluxes, biodiversity loss, an increase in invasive species, and changes in nutrient cycling. Hydrochar, generated through hydrothermal carbonization, might be less stable when introduced into the soil, which could lead to heightened GHG emissions due to quicker carbon breakdown and increased microbial activity. On the other hand, biochar, created via pyrolysis, demonstrates stability and can beneficially impact GHG emissions. Biochar could be the preferred red option for carbon sequestration purposes, while hydrochar might be more advantageous for use as a gas adsorbent. This review paper highlights the ecological impact of long-term applications of biochar and hydrochar in soil. In general, using these materials as soil amendments helps establish a sustainable pool of organic carbon, decreasing atmospheric GHG concentration and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Biochar modulating soil biological health: A review

Abstract:Biochar can be used for multifunctional applications including the improvement of soil health and carbon storage, remediation of contaminated soil and water resources, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and odorous compounds, and feed supplementation to improve animal health. A healthy soil preserves microbial biodiversity that is effective in supressing plant pathogens and pests, recycling nutrients for plant growth, promoting positive symbiotic associations with plant roots, improving soil structure to supply water and nutrients, and ultimately enhancing soil productivity and plant growth. As a soil amendment, biochar assures soil biological health through different processes. First, biochar supports habitats for microorganisms due to its porous nature and by promoting the formation of stable soil micro-aggregates. Biochar also serves as a carbon and nutrient source. Biochar alters soil physical and chemical properties, creating optimum soil conditions for microbial diversity. Biochar can also immobilize soil pollutants and reduce their bioavailability that would otherwise inhibit microbial growth. However, depending on the pyrolysis settings and feedstock resources, biochar can be comprised of contaminants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements that can inhibit microbial activity, thereby impacting soil health.

Abstract:This review explores the multifaceted impacts of biochar on soil ecosystems honing in on its capacity to improve soil characteristics and modify microbial behavior. Biochar is a carbon-rich substance generated through pyrolysis of biomass which has gained escalating interest within the scientific community due to its potential for boosting soil carbon sequestration enhancing soil fertility and mitigating soil pollutants. The improvements brought about by biochar extend to influencing the metabolic activities and community structures of soil microorganisms. Our investigation delves into the effects of biochar on soil physical and chemical properties, its influence on enzymatic activities, nutrient availability and its role in contaminant transformation. Notably, we also study the interplay between biochar and microbial entities elucidating possible mechanisms underpinning this interaction. Alongside the benefits of biochar use this review underscores potential risks, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the broader implications of biochar applications. By amalgamating current knowledge, we strive to lay the groundwork for future explorations in this field.

Abstract:This review article explores the sustainable practice of producing biochar from plant residues, effectively transforming green waste into a valuable resource commonly referred to as “green gold”. It discussed mainly on the pyrolysis process of biochar production, and the impact of different pyrolysis methods on the resulting biochar's properties, including surface area, porosity, and nutrient holding capacity. Further, the review analyzes the multifaceted benefits of biochar for soil health and plant growth. It highlights how biochar can improve soil structure, increase water retention, and enhance nutrient availability, leading to healthier and more productive agricultural lands. Additionally, the review explores biochar's potential in influencing the soil microbial community, potentially promoting beneficial organisms and suppressing harmful pathogens. It also explores biochar's role in mitigating climate change by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, a balanced perspective is maintained by acknowledging potential drawbacks associated with biochar use, such as the need for further research to optimize production methods and potential negative impacts on certain soil fauna. This review highlights biochar's promise as a sustainable, cost-effective solution for agriculture and environmental issues. Biochar adoption can lead to a greener future through carbon capture, soil health, and waste management.

Abstract:Biochar is a carbon-rich material which can be prepared from various organic waste feedstock, such as agricultural wastes and municipal sewage sludge. Biochar has received increasing attention due to its unique feature such as high carbon content and cation exchange capacity, large specific surface area and stable structure. This review systematically analyzed and summarized the preparation, characterization, modification, and especially environmental application of biochar, based on more than 200 papers published in recent 10 year, to provide an overview of biochar with a particular on its environmental application. The physiochemical properties of biochar varies with the types of feedstocks. Pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal carbonization are the common methods for biochar preparation. Biochar can be modified by acid, alkali, oxidizing agents, metal ions, carbonaceous materials, steam and gas purging. The selection of modification methods depends on the environmental application fields. The biochar has been used for soil remediation and amelioration, carbon sequestration, organic solid waste composting, decontamination of water and wastewater, catalyst and activator, electrode materials and electrode modifier, which were discussed in detail. The application of biochar in the carbon sequestration should be further investigated at similar experimental conditions to obtain the consistent results. The effect of biochar on soil microbes should be further investigated to elucidate the dominant reason for the improvement of soil fertility based on different soil and feedstock. In addition, more attention should be paid to the release of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from biochar to the environment when biochar is practically used for the environmental remediation. The relationship between biochar structure and activation capability should be further investigated to clarify the activation mechanism of persulfate by biochar when it is used as activator. In summary, biochar has wide application prospect in environmental remediation, and the mechanism of biochar in environmental application should be further investigated.<h5>Graphical abstract</h5>
