STUDIES ON PRODUCTION OF BIOETHANOL FROM WASTE POTATOES USING CO-CULTURE OF SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE AND ASPERGILLUS NIGER

Abstract:Bioethanol production from starchy materials such as potato, sweet potato, corn flour is based on bioconversion of starch into sugar and then ethanol by fermentation process. In the present scenario, there is a growing interest for ecologically and economically sustainable biofuel production. In the present scenario, bio-fuels have increased in popularity because of rising oil prices and the need for energy security. India imports >70% of it’s required crude oil, which leads a major expenditure of foreign currency. India can cut it’s crude oil import by using bioethanol for vehicles. In the past years, feasibility of lignocelluloses containing materials for ethyl alcohol production has been explored depending upon the availability in the region (Shindo and Tachibana, 2006). Waste potatoes, as byproduct, are easily available and account for 5-10% of the crop produced in India. The present study was carried out with the objectives of analyze the major chemical constituents of waste potatoes collected from different locations, optimize the fermentation variables for better yield of bioethanol using co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergillus niger and quality evaluation of bioethanol produced. In this study for bioethanol production main fermentation variables were optimized in solid state fermentation (SSF) and simultaneous Saccharification and fermentation (SiSF) methods using co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae MTCC 170 and Aspergillus niger MTCC 2196. The results of various experiments revealed that with the SSF technique the highest yield of bioethanol (5.8%) using co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae MTCC 170 and Aspergillus niger MTCC 2196 was obtained at incubation temperature of 30°C after 96 hr of incubation period. In case of simultaneous Saccharification and fermentation (SiSF), the results of various experiments revealed that by employing co-culture of yeast and fungi the highest yield of bioethanol (5.3%) was obtained at a pH of 4.5 with incubation temperature of 25°C after 96 hr of incubation period. The results of various quality attributes of the bioethanol produced showed that there were no major differences in values of density, viscosity, of the bioethanol produced from both methods of fermentation.

Abstract:This prospective randomized study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) and meibomian gland expression (MGX) as polytherapy for Sjögren’s Syndrome-related dry eye (SS-DE). The study enrolled 55 participants with SS-DE, 27 for the treatment group and 28 for the control group. The treatment group underwent three IPL-MGX treatments, three weeks apart. A randomly-selected eye from each patient was assessed at baseline and on weeks 9, 12, and 15 for Snellen best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, conjunctival congestion, tear meniscus height, non-invasive tear breakup time (NBUT), Schirmer’s I test (SIT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), meibomian gland (MG) dropout, eyelid margin abnormality, MGX and meibum quality. OSDI, NBUT, CFS, MGX, and meibum quality were significantly improved in both groups, particularly in the treatment group. The eyelid margin abnormality improved significantly in the treatment but not in the control group on weeks 12 and 15. Snellen BCVA, conjunctival congestion, and SIT improved significantly in the treatment group, but the two groups were statistically similar. Our results indicated that three IPL-MGX sessions could significantly improve the subjective and objective characteristics of SS-DE, representing a promising treatment strategy.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of IPL treatment on Asian skin by reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) analysis. Ten Asian female volunteers (39~54 years old, Fitzpatrick skin type III~IV) received five monthly IPL treatments. RCM skin images were evaluated, and several skin physiological parameters including thickness of stratum corneum, minimal thickness of epidermis, thickness of basal layer, density of dermal papillae, and mean diameter of papillae capillaries were measured both at baseline and 1 month after the last treatment. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was evaluated, as well. Thickness of stratum corneum was 4.80 ± 1.48 μm before IPL treatment and 5.50 ± 1.35 μm after treatment (p = 0.322). Both minimal thickness of epidermis and thickness of basal layer were significantly increased (p = 0.002 and 0.018, respectively) after IPL treatment. Dermal papillae density was significantly increased (p = 0.035), whereas mean capillary diameter was reduced significantly (p = 0.035). TEWL was slightly increased after treatment, while the difference was not significant on either T-zone or U-zone (p = 0.085 on T-zone and p = 0.114 on U-zone). RCM imaging is a feasible method to evaluate the effect of IPL effect on human skin. Moreover, IPL treatment serves to be highly safe in skin rejuvenation.

Efficacy of fractional radiofrequency in the treatment of erythematous capillary rosacea: A split-face study

Abstract:Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of treating erythematotelangiectatic rosacea using fractional radiofrequency (FRF). Methods: Twenty patients with a confirmed diagnosis of erythema capillaris rosacea were selected, and one side of each patient's face was randomly assigned to receive FRF treatments for three to six times, with an interval of 2 weeks between each treatment. VISIA, dermoscopy, and the Clinician's Erythema Evaluation Scale (CEA) were applied to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment before and after the treatment, to record the VAS scores and adverse reactions, and to conduct a patient satisfaction survey. Results: The characteristic counts and scores of red zone and porphyrin as assessed by VISIA test were significantly decreased, and the difference between the treated side and the pretreatment side was statistically significant (p < 0.05), and the efficacy of the treatment was statistically insignificant compared with the control side, except for the red zone and porphyrin which were statistically significant before and after the treatment (p > 0.05). By CEA score, the difference between the treated side after treatment and the control side was statistically significant (p < 0.05), and the difference between the treated side before and after treatment was statistically significant (p < 0.05); the difference between the control side before and after treatment was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Dermatoscopic observation showed reduction in pore size, reduction of yellowish-white and black horn plugs within the pores, lightening of the red background and thinning and blurring of the capillary structure on the treated side of the skin compared to the control side, and the skin on the treated side showed the above mentioned changes before and after the treatment as well. The mean pain score of the subjects was obtained by VAS score 3.67 ± 0.90. Adverse effects included mild edema, erythema, and microscopic crusting; no long-term adverse effects were seen in all patients. The efficacy of FRF treatment was evaluated 1 month after the final treatment, and 85% of the subjects rated it as satisfactory, very satisfactory, and very satisfactory. Conclusion: FRF for the treatment of erythematous capillary dilatation rosacea is effective, safe, and suitable for clinical promotion.
A Randomized, Split-Face, Comparative Study of a Combined Needle Radiofrequency/Intense Pulsed Light Device in Moderate-to-Severe Acne Patients

Abstract:Background: Radiofrequency (RF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) have been reported as efficient adjuvant treatment modalities for acne vulgaris. Objective: We sought to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of a combined needle RF and vacuum IPL device for acne treatment without the use of other conventional topical or oral agents. Methods: This randomized, split-faced study was designed to include patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris. Comedone extraction was performed on both parts of the face prior to laser treatment. One side of the face was treated with RF and IPL in 2-week intervals, while the other side was left untreated as a control. Two independent blinded investigators evaluated the patients for improvement using clinical photographs. We also assessed for possible adverse effects. Results: The study included 44 patients with acne vulgaris (27 men and 17 women). Their ages ranged from 19-39 years (average, 23 years). At the final 12-week follow-up visit, the acne reduction rate was 34.80% (±33.45%; range, 30.92%-19.03%) on the treated side and 13.76% (±37.58%; range, 28.26%-23.27%) in the control group compared to baseline, constituting a significant difference. The difference in reduction rate between the treated and control sides was 21.03% (±25.09%), with the treated side experiencing more significant improvement (p<0.05). In the assessment of adverse events, one patient experienced mild surrounding erythema that spontaneously improved. Conclusion: Combined treatment of needle RF and IPL could improve acne lesions.

Abstract:Background Combinational therapy such as taking tranexamic acid while using laser treatment has been proved potential efficacy by many experiments. However, there is few research which contains large samples and consistent observations. Objective We evaluated clinical efficacy and safety of a new systemic treatment of drug-laser-photon therapy. Methods Retrospective and randomized investigator-blinded study of 75 patients with mixed type melasma was analyzed. At each visit, standardized photographs were taken using VISIA. Modified melasma area and severity index (mMASI) scores were marked using photographs by two dermatologists. Results The mMASI score decreased significantly from 6.92 to 3.84 after the treatment. The VISIA analyze right cheek data shows: Spots (from 49.67 +/- 3.43 to 56.09 +/- 3.31), UV spots (from 41.39 +/- 24.45 to 44.56 +/- 25.86), and Brown spots (from 23.97 +/- 17.89 to 28.16 +/- 21.28) are statistically increased (p = 0.035, p = 0.018, p = 0.07). All patients feel varying degrees of improvement, about 10.17% felt very much improved, 30.51% felt much improved (51%-75%), 45.76% felt moderately improved (26%-50%), and 13.56% felt little improved (1%-25%). Limitations This study was no control group. Conclusion The efficacy and safety profile of the combination of drug-laser-photon therapy systemic treatment in melasma patients has been proved. It has potential possibility to become a new, reliable, widely suitable therapy strategy.

Abstract:1. The passive elastic and viscous properties of isolated rat diaphragm muscle were studied, under various strains and strain rates similar to those in the animal, to measure their effects on the storage and release of mechanical potential energy. 2. Increasing the muscle length or amplitude of the displacement increased energy loss per stretch/shorten cycle, and increased the relative recovery of potential energy from the stretch during subsequent shortening. 3. Increasing strain rates increased energy loss per cycle and decreased the relative recovery of energy put into the stretch. 4. These effects were due to increased viscous resistance and increased elastic tension with increased length, and increased viscous resistance with increased strain rates. 5. The effects of increasing strain rate alone (1‐4 Hz) were small relative to the effects of a 10% increase in muscle length or the amplitude of the length cycle. 6. Diaphragm muscle movements involving low velocity, small amplitude displacements at long muscle lengths are most effective at conserving net passive mechanical energy, while short muscle lengths minimize gross energy loss.

Abstract:Previous clinical studies have shown that pulsed dye laser (PDL) and intense pulsed light (IPL) are effective for treating erythematotelangiectatic rosacea(ETR). This article aims to compare the efficacy and safety of PDL and IPL at three different wavelength bands (broad-band, single-narrow-band, and dual-narrow-band) in treating ETR. Sixty subjects with ETR were randomly categorized into four groups and received one of the following laser treatments: PDL (595 nm), IPL with Delicate Pulse Light (DPL, 500–600 nm), IPL with M22 590 (590–1200 nm), or IPL with M22 vascular filter (530–650 nm and 900–1200 nm). Four treatment sessions were administered at 4-week intervals, with one follow-up session 4 weeks after the final treatment. The efficacy of the four lasers was evaluated by comparing the clinical symptom score, total effective rate, VISIA red area absolute score, and RosaQoL score before and after treatment. The safety was evaluated by comparing adverse reactions such as pain, purpura, erythematous edema, and blister. All 60 subjects completed the study. Within-group effects showed that the clinical symptom score, VISIA red area absolute score, and RosaQoL score of all four groups were significantly reduced compared to before treatment ( p < 0.001). Between-group effects showed no statistically significant difference among the four laser groups. Safety analysis showed that all four lasers were safe, but the incidence of blister was higher in the M22 vascular group. Nonpurpurogenic PDL, DPL, M22 590, and M22 vascular were equally effective in treating ETR and were well-tolerated. ClinicalTrial.gov Identifier: NCT05360251.

Abstract:Background: Fractional technology overcomes several problems of ablative lasers such as a high incidence rate of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). A new technology fractional radiofrequency, which induces deep dermal heating and leaves the epidermal less affected results in less adverse effect in Chinese. Objective : To evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerance of fractional bipolar radiofrequency (RF) in the treatment of acne scars in Asian people with the strategy of high energy. Methods: Twenty-six healthy Asian patients with acne scars received four monthly high energy (85-95mj/pin) treatments with a fractional bipolar RF device. Improvement and tolerance were evaluated at each treatment and a 4-week and 12-week follow-up visit. Results: Twenty-three patients completed the study. Acne score showed a significantly decrease at 4-week and 12-week follow-up visits. Patients' evaluation of global improvement and satisfaction increased at the 12-week visit compared with baseline. Side effects were limited to transient pain, erythema, dryness and low risk of PIH. Conclusion: Treatment with high energy of fractional bipolar RF is safe and effective for acne scars in Asian people. Common side effects such as PIH, eschars are less than fractional lasers.

Abstract:Background: Facial telangiectasias is a prevalent cosmetic disorder that can be associated with several conditions such as rosacea. IPL (intensity pulsed light) therapy is commonly used for the treatment of vascular lesions. This study tested the efficacy of an IPL system emitting selected vascular chromophore-specific wavelengths in the range of 500–1200 nm for the treatment of vascular lesions. Materials and Methods: A total of 39 patients affected by different vascular lesions on their face were enrolled. The procedure consisted of three treatment sessions, spaced 1 month apart, using the IPL system with a 500–677 and 854–1200 nm filter. Follow-up was performed at 21–90 days (3 weeks–3 months) after the last IPL session. Three-dimensional and dermoscopic clinical photographs were captured and evaluated using a five-point scale. Adverse events were checked. Results: In total, 21 patients achieved excellent improvement, 13 patients achieved good improvement, 3 patients achieved moderate improvement, 2 patients achieved mild improvement, and 0 patients achieved no improvement, with an overall good response to treatment. The photographic evaluation showed good results as soon as 3 days after the last IPL session. Relevant side effects were absent. Conclusions: The study device may represent a successful treatment to improve vascular lesions that are resistant to laser therapy.

Abstract:IntroductionPost-inflammatory erythema (PIE) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are the most common acne-related sequelae with no effective treatments. By combining different cut-off filters, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy can effectively treat these conditions with few side effects. While the safety and effectiveness of IPL for treating post-burn hyperpigmentation is well known, there is little evidence for its benefits for acne-related PIH. In this article, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of IPL for the treatment of acne-related PIE and PIH.MethodsThis retrospective study evaluated 60 patients with more than 6 months of PIE and PIH treated by the same IPL device and similar protocols. The treatment included three to seven sessions at 4–6-week intervals, and three cut-off filters (640 nm, 590 nm and 560 nm) were used sequentially in each session. Using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), and Erythema Assessment Scale (EAS), patients were evaluated on the basis of their facial photographs. The facial brown spots and red areas were visualised and analysed using the VISIA-CR system. Six months after the last treatment, the patients were assessed for acne relapse or any side effects.Please check and confirm that the authors and their respective affiliations have been correctly processed and amend if necessary.Checked and confirmed. No further corrections.ResultsOn the basis of the GAIS, 49 of 60 patients (81.7%) showed complete or partial clearance of erythema and hyperpigmentation. A significant reduction (p < 0.01) in the facial brown spots and red areas was seen after IPL treatment. While no long-term side effects were reported, seven patients (11.7%) experienced acne relapse at follow-up.ConclusionIPL is an effective and safe treatment for acne-related PIE and PIH.

Abstract:Different treatment modalities are used for the treatment and esthetic improvement of aging hands. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel technology, which combines bipolar radio frequency (RF) and optical energies for the cosmetic treatment of aging hands. The objective of the study was to assess the efficacy, safety, tolerability, and patient satisfaction of combined bipolar radiofrequency and optical energies vs. optical energy alone for the treatment of aging hands. Thirteen female patients with solar lentigines on the back of the hands were enrolled. Participants received three treatments: combined RF and intense pulsed light (IPL) on one hand and IPL treatment alone on the other. Standardized clinical photographs were taken, and patient and investigator improvement assessment (Global Esthetic Improvement (GAI) scale), patient satisfaction, and tolerability were evaluated. At the 1 and 3 months follow-up, skin laxity and pigmentation, investigator and patient improvement assessments, and satisfaction were significantly better in the hand treated with combined bipolar RF and IPL. This study demonstrates the safety and efficacy of combining RF and optical energies for the esthetic improvement of aging hands. Combined RF and IPL treatment was more efficient than IPL alone in improving skin pigmentation, skin laxity, and texture.

Abstract:Background and Objectives Fractional radiofrequency devices have been demonstrated to improve skin texture, such as smoothness, rhytides, brightness, and atrophic acne scars, by increasing dermal thickness, dermal collagen content, and dermal fibrillin content. The objective of the study is to assess the efficacy and adverse effects of this device on Asian patients of skin type III and IV with skin textural changes. Materials and Methods The study was designed as a prospective, open‐labeled single‐arm study, which was conducted with 20 Chinese patients aged 21–60 years and having irregularities in their skin texture, rhytides, and acne scars. The patients received six treatments at intervals of 4 weeks. Treatment was initiated with the maximum energy tolerated, which was then adjusted during the course of treatment if the patients felt excessive discomfort. A total of two passes were delivered in each session. Physician assessment results and standardized photographs were collected at the baseline, after all treatment visits, and at 1, 2, and 6 months after the final treatment visit. Results A total of 17 patients completed the study according to the established protocol. At the 6‐month follow‐up, 71% of patients were satisfied and 24% of patients were very satisfied with the received treatments, and the treatment physician reported varying degrees of improvement based on the global assessment scale in 60% of the subjects. While the anticipated side effects, such as erythema, edema, pinpoint bleeding, scab formation, and flare of acne, were noted in the patients, no serious adverse effects occurred. Conclusion The use of fractional radiofrequency improves skin texture and is safe for use in Asian patients of skin type III and IV. No long‐term serious adverse effects were noted.

Abstract:Intense pulsed light (IPL) devices have been used in acne treatment in combination with conventional topical and oral medications. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IPL treatment using a dual-band filter (400–600 nm and 800–1200 nm) in facial acne vulgaris treatment. Twenty-three acne vulgaris patients were enrolled in this study. The patients were treated on both sides of the face. The treatments were performed in 2-week intervals for a total of five sessions. The final visit for the clinical evaluation was 2 weeks after the fifth treatment session. The mean number of papules, pustules, and comedones, and the melanin index, was significantly decreased at the final visit. However, sebum production and the erythema index showed no statistically significant differences after treatment. IPL treatment using a dual-band filter can be an alternative for patients who are unfit for systemic acne medication. It can also be used with conventional acne treatment for better treatment results.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A number of devices are available for skin rejuvenation and conventional devices include both ablative and non-ablative lasers. More recently, bipolar fractionated radiofrequency (RF) devices have been introduced.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel 144 pin high density tip bipolar fractionated radiofrequency (RF) device for skin rejuvenation in Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV.METHODS AND MATERIALS: This single-center, prospective, study enrolled 25 female between the ages of 35-60 years, with mild to moderate wrinkling based on the Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Scale. The subjects were of Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV. Each subject underwent 3 full-face treatments with a 144 pin fractional bipolar RF device at 30-day intervals. All subjects underwent clinical evaluations during the study period to evaluate for any adverse events. Subsequently, all subjects were evaluated for improvement in rhytides, dyschromias and skin texture based on photographic evaluation by blinded investigators at 6 months following the final RF treatment.RESULTS: A statistically significant improvement in rhytides, dyschromias and texture was noted. Adverse events were limited to mild erythema and swelling. Post-inflammatory pigmentary changes were not observed in any subjects.CONCLUSION: The novel 144 pin high density tip bipolar fractionated RF device is both safe and effective for facial skin rejuvenation in Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV.

Clinical Observation of Intense Pulsed Light in Treatment of Facial Corticosteroid Dependent Dermatitis

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of intense pulsed light in treatment of facial sensibility dermatitis with hormone preparation for long time application.Method In treatment group IPL was applied on face with an interval of 3 weeks,five sessions of treatment served as a course,and the therapeutic parameter was selected in low-grade power about 20～25J/cm2 at the start.In the control group lankefuning was applied by cold compress on face 1～2 times daily,with loratadine taken orally 10mg,1 times daily,4 weeks as a therapeutic course.Result Total effective ratio of rational symptom(calorescence,pruritus,pain,aridity,tautness)in treatment and control group were 78.38%,83.33% respectively,there was no statistical difference between them(P0.05).And total effective ratio of objective sign(telangiectasis,acne,pigmentation,skin aging,wolly hair)in treatment and control group were 86.49%,38.10% respectively.Treatment group has significant effect compared with control group(P0.01).Conclusion Intense pulsed light is safe,effective method in the treatment of facial sensibility dermatitis with hormone.

Abstract:The clinical features of photoaging include: skin texture changes, laxity, rhytides, pigmentary changes, and vascular changes such as erythema and telangiectasias. In order to meet patients' increasing demands for improving all aspects of photoaging at one office visit, employing a multi-modality treatment for all aspects of photoaging has become increasingly desirable for the physician and patient alike. We examine a novel device that employs bipolar radiofrequency (RF), intense pulsed light (IPL), and infrared diode laser. These laser and light source treatments are performed sequentially. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of this device (i.e., ELOS Triniti™). Twenty-six subjects received four ELOS Triniti™ treatments at 1-month intervals. They were followed up 1, 3, and 6 months after completing the treatments. Two blinded dermatologists used a comprehensive grading scale to evaluate the degree of the photoaging in terms of rhytides, laxity, dyschromia, erythema, telangiectasias, and texture. Subjects used a 0-10 grading scale for self-assessment of photoaging. Additionally, we measured the Erythema Index (EI), Melanin Index (MI), transepidermal water loss scores (TEWL), stratum corneum moisture scores (SC), and dermis moisture scores (D) before treatment and 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. There was a statistically significant improvement in all five aspects of the comprehensive grading scale. Overall, it had excellent efficacy for improving erythema, telangiectasias, and skin texture. It also had a relatively long effect on improving skin laxity; however, it had only a limited ability to improve rhytides and dyschromia. It can mildly to moderately improve the global photoaging. This global effect can be noted 1 month after treatment and becomes most clinically apparent 3 months after treatment. This is maintained at least 6 months after treatment. MI index and SC and D values increased while EI index and TEWL values decreased after the treatment. The subjects' self-assessment improved by 2.7 ± 1.2 points. The overall satisfaction rate was 88%. The degree of pain measured 2.5 ± 1.9 points on average. There was no downtime and no severe side effects reported. The sequential implementation of bipolar radiofrequency based optical combination devices (IPL, IR, diode laser) is effective and safe for global facial photoaging.
