Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the internal morphology of deciduous molars through the use of computed microtomography in a sample from Rio de Janeiro. Material and methods: Thirty maxillary and 30 mandibular deciduous molars (n = 60), divided in first and second primary molars, were scanned by computed microtomography. The teeth were evaluated for root number, root canals, Vertucci classification, root curvature, presence of lateral canals, furcation dentin thickness, structure model index (SMI), volume, and canal surface area. Results: The results showed 100% of maxillary molars had three roots and Vertucci type I canal was more prevalent in this group. In the mandibular ones, type IV was more frequent in the mesial root and class I in the distal root and the cavo-interradicular canal occurred in 2 specimens. Dentin thickness in the furcation region measured 1.53 and 1.59 mm in the maxillary and mandibular, respectively. Volume and area parameters varied according to the evaluated canals and SMI demonstrated that all canals had a cylindrical shape. Conclusion: More detailed information about the internal anatomy of the primary molars has been described, which may help strategies in the preparation of these root canals.

Abstract:This study aimed to analyze the root and root canal morphology of mandibular first and second molars using CBCT images. A total of 2,400 mandibular molars exams were selected from 600 patients aged between 18 and 75 years. The number of roots, number of root canals, and root canal configuration according to the Vertucci classification were verified. Overall, 94.92% of mandibular first molars and 90.17% of mandibular second molars had two separate roots. Among the biradicular molars, the first molars showed a greater incidence of type IV canals in the mesial root and type I in the distal root. In the second molars, the most common canal form was type IV in the mesial root and type I in the distal root. In the triradicular molars, the type IV and type I configurations were the most common in the mesial root of the first molar and second molar, respectively. In both triradicular molars, there was a prevalence of type I canal in the distal and DL roots. Statistical analysis was performed at a significance level of 0.05. The number of roots was correlated with gender (Spearman test), and the canal's configuration with gender and bilaterality (Wilcoxon test). The subpopulation studied has a high incidence of bilateral symmetry and mandibular molars with two roots with two distinct mesial canals and one distal canal. The bilateral configuration is possible to estimate the number of canals, especially in images that are difficult to visualize, such as atresic canals.

Abstract:The mandibular first molar often requires endodontic intervention, which can be challenging and complex with several variants in the number of canals and roots. Usually, these teeth have a single mesial and distal root, but variants and anomalies have been noted. The incidence of the number of roots can differ between populations. For instance, up to a third of East Asians present with a third root, while the global prevalence is 8.9%. One- and four-rooted first molar teeth are seldom encountered. Over the years different methods have been used to study root and canal morphology, but micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has provided a non-invasive method to study root and canal morphology in high definition. This paperis the first of two giving an overview of available literature on various aspects of the external and internal root andcanal morphology of the mandibular first permanent molar. The aim is to provide an overview of relevant aspects of the external root morphology of the mandibular first molar in different populations. The content is supported by illustrative micro-CT images and a report on clinical cases where anomalies have been treated.

Abstract:The endodontic intervention of the mandibular first molar can be challenging. Once root canals or any portion of them remain undiscovered and untreated, the risk of treatment failure greatly increases. The consensus is that mandibular first molars may have three or four main root canals. However, variations have been noted between populations, which include the mid-mesial canal (MM) and the mid-distal canal (MD). Authors have also attempted to classify root canal configurations to identify common patterns for diagnostic and treatment planning purposes. The introduction of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to root and canal morphological studies revolutionised observation of complex root canal anatomy in three dimensions and high definition. This paper is the second of two providing an overview of literature on various aspect of the external and internal root and canal morphology of the mandibular first permanent molar. Analysis of morphology and symmetry of the root canal system of incisors, premolars and mandibular molars using CBCT

Abstract:Knowledge of root canal internal anatomy and its variations is important forproper endodontic treatment. It is therefore necessary to investigate morphological aspects among different dental groups in the same patient to define the best protocol for the case. Aim: To evaluate the morphology and symmetry of homologous incisors, premolars and mandibular molars using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and method: Descriptive statistical analysis was performed for the frequency of categorical variables, and a chi-square test or Fisher 's exact test was used to test whether gender and side were associated with number of roots, number of canals, and Vertucci's classification. Forty-five CBCT scans were evaluated, and 444 mandibular teeth were analyzed. The number of roots, number of canals, classification of the canals in each root according to Vertucci and presence of a symmetrical relationship between pairs of posterior teeth were analyzed. Results: The resuls showed that 74% of mandibular central incisors had type I root canal, 26% of mandibular lateral incisors had type I and, with a significant difference in the number of canals between males and females (p < 0.05). In mandibular first premolars, 70.5% had type I; and in mandibular second premolars, 98.5% had type I. Mandibular first molars had two roots in 98% of the cases. Second mandibular molars had two roots in 92.5% of the cases, one root in 6%, and three roots in 1.5%. Symmetry between central incisors was higher in females than in males. Conclusión: Teeth of the same group can have different morphologies in the same patient.

Abstract:Introduction: The mesial root of the mandibular molar is one of the most complex internal anatomies of human dentition. This study aimed to detect root canal morphology and the incidence of isthmus in the mesial root canal of the mandibular first molar using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of different voxel size scanning modes compared to stereomicroscopic evaluation after teeth clearance. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted mandibular first molars were collected, fixed in foam blocks, and scanned using CBCT with 150 and 400 μm voxel sizes. All the teeth were cleared and fixed in clear epoxy blocks for serial cross-sectioning from the apex, then examined using a stereomicroscope. Comparisons between cross-sectioned slices were achieved using Friedman's test ( P ≤ 0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the cleared teeth, voxel sizes of 400 and 150 μm in the detection of the root canal and isthmus. Only voxel size 150 μm was able to detect the isthmus at 1 mm and 2.5 mm from the apex. Vertucci Types IV and II were the most common canal configurations reported, with a high incidence of isthmus at 4 mm and 5.5 mm from the apex. Conclusion: The 150 μm voxel size mode provides more accurate detection of the isthmus portion and root canal morphology. Vertucci Types IV and II were the most common canal configurations, and an isthmus with a high incidence was found at 4 mm and 5.5 mm from the apex of the mesial root of the mandibular first molar.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Mandibular first premolars are familiar with their varied root canal morphology, causing difficulties and challenges for successful endodontic procedures. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to study the characterization of root and canal morphology of the first mandibular premolar using micro-computed tomography. Methodology The literature search was conducted using electronic web databases like PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Cochrane with the chosen MeSH key words and data was retrieved until May 2023. Further to perform the statistical analysis, R v 4.3.1 software with "meta", 'metafor" "metaviz" " ggplot2" package was used, and results were represented by odds ratios (OR) and the percentage of forest plots along a 95 per cent confidence interval (CI). Results The total number of studies meeting the inclusion criteria was 13; these studies were conducted on mandibular first premolar using Micro-CT; the total sample size was 1817. To scan the sample, an X-ray micro-focus CT system (Siemens Inveon CT, Erlangen, Germany) was used in four studies and seven different machines were used in the respective studies. Mimics 10.01 software (Materialize, Leuven, Belgium) and NRecon v.1.6.9 software (Bruker, Kontich, Belgium) were commonly operated. The minimum and maximum voxel size ranges between 11.94 and 50 μm. Vertucci’s classification was frequently used (9), while one study applied Ahmed et al. and Vertucci’s classification. Conclusion This systematic review provides essential information about the root and canal configurations, radicular grooves, accessory canals, and apical foramina through Micro-CT, aiming to improve the accuracy of endodontic treatment and help practitioners.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the features of the apical root canal anatomy and its relation to the level at which 2 separate root canals merge in the mesial roots of the mandibular first molars with Vertucci type II canal configuration by using micro-computed tomography analysis.METHODS: The anatomic features of the apical 3 mm of root canals in 83 mesial roots of mandibular first molar teeth were investigated by micro-computed tomography and software imaging according to the level at which 2 separate root canals merge. The most apical slice where a visible root canal was detectable was recorded as 0 level. The specimens from where 2 root canals rejoin at within 3 mm from the 0 level were then assigned to group 1 (n = 37), whereas the specimens from where root canals rejoin 3-9 mm from the 0 level were assigned to group 2 (n = 46). Data were presented by using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U tests, with the significance level set at 5%.RESULTS: In all specimens the long oval type of cross-sectional shape increased from 50.9% at 1 mm to 80.5% at 3 mm. Group 1 presented significantly higher major diameter values compared with group 2 (P < .05). There was no significant difference regarding minor diameter values (P > .05) between groups. Group 2 displayed significantly higher roundness values than group 1 (P < .05).CONCLUSIONS: A long oval root cross section of apical root canal anatomy is more prevalent in roots for which 2 root canals merge within apical 3 mm of root canals.

Abstract:When soluble metal salts are placed in a silicate solution, chemical gardens grow. These gardens are treelike structures formed of long thin hollow tubes. The growth is driven by the increase in internal pressure from osmosis. One particular case is examined here, calcium chloride in a solution of sodium trisilicate. We directly measure the internal pressure of a silicate garden as it grows via a series of relaxation oscillations. From these observations we deduce the stresses in the membrane and discuss how they influence the growth of tubes. Also we estimate the critical stress and the average Young's modulus for the silicate garden's membrane.
Three-dimensional modelling and concurrent measurements of root anatomy in mandibular first molar mesial roots using micro-computed tomography

Abstract:Aim: To obtain concurrent radicular measurements in the mesiobuccal (MB) and mesiolingual (ML) canals of mandibular first molars using scanned data of micro-computed tomography (μCT) with novel software. Methodology: The scanned data from 37 mandibular first molar mesial roots were reconstructed and analysed with custom-developed software (Kappa2). For each canal, three-dimensional (3D) surface models were re-sliced at 0.1-mm intervals perpendicular to the central axis. Dentine thicknesses, canal widths and 3D curvatures were measured automatically on each slice. Measurements were analysed statistically with anova for differences at each direction and at different levels of both canals. Results: Lateral dentine thicknesses were significantly higher than mesial and distal thicknesses, at all the levels of both canals (P < 0.001). Mesial thicknesses were significantly higher than distal thicknesses in the coronal third of both canals (P < 0.001). Thinnest dentine thicknesses were mainly located on the disto-inside of both canals. Narrowest canal widths were 0.24 ± 0.10 and 0.22 ± 0.09 mm in MB and ML canals, respectively. Canal curvatures were greatest in the apical third of both canals (P < 0.001), and they were greater in the MB canals than in the ML canals (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Micro-computed tomography with novel software provided valuable anatomical information for optimizing instrumentation and minimizing mishaps in nonsurgical root canal treatment.

Abstract:To investigate the anatomic features of the root furcation of permanent mandibular first molars. A total of 50 extracted mandibular first molars (25 two-rooted and 25 three-rooted) were collected and scanned using micro-computed tomography. The digital models of teeth and root canal systems were reconstructed three-dimensionally. The tooth models were displayed in parallel projection mode from buccal and distal views. Screenshots were captured and subsequently analyzed using Image-Pro Plus 6.0 software after calibration. The furcation angle, root trunk length, maximum depth and level of distal root concaves of mesial roots, and length of enamel projections were measured, and the furcation types (classified into type V, type U and type W) were detected. Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk's test, one-way analysis of variance, Student's t- test and Chi-square test.

Abstract:Background: A thorough understanding of root and canal anatomy is crucial for successful root canal treatment outcomes. This systematic review aims to explore the published micro-CT studies investigated the anatomy of root and canal system in permanent mandibular first molars. Method: An electronic search was performed on Web of science, PubMed, and Scopus. Micro-CT journal studies investigated the root and canal anatomy of permanent double-rooted mandibular first molars were included. Data on study characteristics, objectives of interest, specifications of the studies, and micro-CT specifications were extracted. Risk of bias assessment (ROB) of the included studies was performed using Anatomical Quality Assessment (AQUA) tool. The extracted data were presented in tables and figures to present and synthesise the results. A meta-analysis was performed for the studies related to the prevalence of Vertucci's canal configurations, middle mesial canal (MMC) configurations, and Fan's isthmus types. Results: Amongst 1358 identified studies, thirty met the inclusion criteria. In terms of the objectives, the selected studies showed high anatomical variability in mandibular first molars. Twenty-two (73%), 25 (83%), and 12 (40%) of the studies reported the population/ethnicity, micro-CT specifications, and ethical approval, respectively. 28 (93%) studies did not disclose the method of sample size estimation. In only 6 (20%) of the studies, the authors had calibrated the assessment approaches. Mostly, a potential ROB was reported in domain 1 (objective(s) and subject characteristics) and domain 3 (methodology characterization). Whilst, low risk was reported in domains 2 (study design), 4 (descriptive anatomy), and 5 (reporting of results). The overall ROB was reported to be ''moderate'' in the vast majority of the studies (27/30). Meta-analysis results showed high levels of heterogeneity among the studies related to MMCs (I2 = 86%) and Fan's isthmus (I2 = 87%). As for the root canal configuration, pooled prevalence showed that Vertucci type IV and type I were the most prevalent in mesial and distal root canals, respectively. Conclusion: Based on moderate risk of bias level of evidence, micro-CT studies have shown wide range of qualitative and quantitative data presentations of the roots and canals in mandibular first molars. Geometric Analysis of the Distolingual Root and Canal in Mandibular First Molars: A Micro–computed Tomographic Study

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Introduction</h3><p>To comprehensively assess by micro-CT imaging the anatomical features of distolingual (DL) roots and canals in mandibular first molars collected from one population.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>102 specimens were examined for the location and initial direction of the DL canal, and the relationship between the distance of apical deviation and angle of root curvature.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>All DL roots had only one canal. A new 7-category classification system is proposed for the DL roots of mandibular first molar. Most DL roots were type Ⅳ (28 teeth), type Ⅲ (26 teeth) and type Ⅴ (25 teeth). The average canal curvature in all root types was over 25°. There was a positive correlation between the angles of root and canal curvature for types Ⅱ, Ⅳ, and Ⅴ (<em>P</em> < 0.05), but not for types Ⅰ and Ⅲ (<em>P</em> > 0.05). In bucco-lingual view most DL roots were straight, whereas in the mesiodistal (MD) view the root curvature was close to the maximum value. The orifice of the DL canal was four times further from the line that bisects a line between MB and ML canal orifices than the DB canal. The angle between the MB-ML line and the horizontal projection of the coronal third of the DL canal on the pulp floor was 8.1 ± 10.0° and 6.1 ± 8.2° for teeth from the left and right side, respectively. The angle between the inserted simulated file and the CEJ was 57.9 ± 6.3°. 73% of the DL canals had no constriction in the apical area. DL canals were narrow and had a conical frustum-like shape with 0.04 taper at the apical portion.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>The novel classification of the DL roots helps to better understand the clinically challenging anatomy of the root and canal.</p>

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: In the present study, confluent canals in the mandibular first molar's mesial root were investigated in an Italian population by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A total of 200 molars, selected from the CBCT examinations of 130 patients who required this type of X-ray study as part of their dental treatment, were examined. The evaluated parameters were number of canals, root canal system configuration, presence of apical confluences, distance between confluences and apical foramina, which canal had a higher degree of curvature, and symmetry between left and right elements in the same individual. Statistical Analysis Used: Percentages of the cases were reported. Results: All the examined roots presented two canals. In 59% of cases, a Vertucci Type IV canal configuration was observed, while in 41% of cases, a Type II configuration was observed. Apical confluences were present in 41% of cases. The average distance between confluences and apical foramina was 2.85 mm. When confluences were present, the mesiobuccal canal showed a higher degree of curvature in 78% of cases. Symmetry in Vertucci configuration was seen in 88% of cases. Conclusions: Apical confluences in the mesial roots of mandibular molar can be present in a significantly high number of cases, and their recognition is essential to prevent the iatrogenic errors during canal instrumentation.

Abstract:A well-protected microbial habitat may be present in the root and canal morphology, which is varied and complicated. Before initiating effective root canal treatment, a detailed knowledge of the root and canal anatomical variances in each tooth is a must. This study aimed to investigate the root canal configuration, apical constriction anatomy, location of the apical foramen, dentine thickness, and prevalence of accessory canals in mandibular molar teeth in an Egyptian subpopulation using micro-computed tomography (microCT). A total of 96 mandibular first molars were scanned using microCT, and 3D reconstruction was performed using Mimics software. The root canal configurations of each of the mesial and distal root were classified with two different classification systems. The prevalence and dentin thickness around middle mesial and middle distal canals were investigated. The number, location and anatomy of major apical foramina and the apical constriction anatomy analysed. The number and location of accessory canals were identified. Our findings showed that two separate canals (15%) and one single canal (65%) were the most common configuration in the mesial and distal roots, respectively. More than half of the mesial roots had complex canal configurations and 51% had middle mesial canals. The single apical constriction anatomy was the most common for both canals followed by the parallel anatomy. Disto-lingual and distal locations of the apical foramen are the most common location for both roots. Mandibular molars in Egyptians show a wide range of variations in root canal anatomy with high prevalence of middle mesial canals. Clinicians should be aware of such anatomical variations for successful root canal treatment procedures. A specific access refinement protocol and appropriate shaping parameters should be designated for each case to fulfil the mechanical and biological objectives of root canal treatment without compromising the longevity of treated teeth.

Abstract:This study investigated the root canal morphology of fused‐rooted mandibular second molars based on the pulp chamber floor (PCF) and analysed the correlation between the external morphology of the radicular groove, and the internal morphology of the PCF and root canal configuration. A total of 291 fused‐rooted teeth collected from the Chinese population were scanned using micro‐computed tomography and a dental operating microscope was used for observing the PCFs. The classification of the PCF and root canal configuration were identified according to modified Min et al.'s and Gao et al.'s classifications, respectively. Abstract:BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Minimally invasive endodontic approach become a research hotspot and may prevent the fracture of endodontically-treated teeth. This research aims to measure the coronal root canal morphology of permanent mandibular first molars in 3D and propose a new minimally invasive endodontic approach based on this measurement.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 136 permanent mandibular first molars were involved and reconstructed in 3D models with canals. Then, the morphology characteristics of the coronal root canal were measured.RESULTS: Overall, the distribution of root canal orifices was more centralized than other landmarks. The landmarks were located more mesiobuccally to the center of the occlusal plane of molars. Specifically, the measurements of the maximum curvature of coronal root canals in the axial direction were: in 3-canals 2-rooted teeth, the average angles of curvatures were 23°,25°,11° for mesiobuccal (MB), mesiolingual (ML) and distobuccal (DB) canals, respectively; in 4-canals 2-rooted teeth were 23°,25°,12°,16°for MB, ML, DB, and distolingual (DL) canals, respectively; in 4-canals 3-rooted teeth were 25°,27°,17°,39° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively. The degrees of coronal root canal curvatures in the horizontal direction were: in 3-canals teeth, the average angles of curvatures were -1°,47°,-2° for MB, ML and DB canals, respectively; in 4-canals 2-rooted teeth were -4°,41°,-25°,48° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively; in 4-canals 3-rooted teeth were -3°,33°,-43°,79° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively.CONCLUSION: The results of this study are similar to those previously obtained using CBCT and can help us design endodontic approaches.

Abstract:This paper presents an RF DAC transmitter (TX) with integrated, programmable harmonic cancellation as well as mixed-signal filtering at a peak power of 25.6dBm. The 65nm CMOS prototype uses device stacking and transformer combining and demonstrates 24dB to 42dB HD3 reduction across a frequency range of 0.7GHz to 2GHz, and up to 18dB of notching at a 40MHz offset.
