Abstract:PM2.5 pollution has been alleviated significantly since implementing the Clean Air Action in China, whereas a concomitant increase in O3 pollution has been observed. In the megacity of China, haze episodes can be aggravated by the interaction between aerosols and the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Such interactions have been largely investigated in the middle and upper PBL and less so near the ground. Here, using observations from the ground and in the PBL during summer, we find that haze pollution has decreased notably, but O3 pollution has worsened in Nanjing. PM2.5, black carbon (BC), BC/PM2.5, O3 and planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) changed at rates of -0.34 μg m-3·month-1, 13 ng m-3·month-1, 0.08%·month-1, -0.06 μg m-3·month-1 and 1.5 m month-1, respectively (3.5 m·month-1excluding data from 2020) during 2015-2020. The height of the lower boundary of the temperature inversion layer decreased first and then increased at a rate of 5.4 m month-1 between 2017 and 2020. As the PM2.5 concentration has decreased by 42.4% over the last six years, aerosol extinction has weakened in the PBL. Subsequently, the solar radiation has strengthened near the ground, which is conducive to forming O3 and is mainly concentrated between 0 and 600 m. Due to the heating effect of BC, which can increase the temperature near the ground, the lower boundary of the inversion layer has been elevated, which further mitigates and aggravates the haze and O3 pollution, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract. Severe ozone (O3) pollution episodes plague a few regions in Eastern China at times, e.g., the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). The formation mechanisms including contributing meteorological factors of these severe pollution events remain elusive. A severe summer smog stretched over the YRD region from August 22 to 25, 2016 with hourly surface O3 concentrations exceeding 300 µg m−3 on August 25 in Nanjing, located in the western YRD. The weather pattern of this episode was characterized by near-surface prevailing easterly wind and continuous high air temperature. The formation mechanism of this O3 episode over the YRD area, particularly the extreme values over western YRD, was investigated using observation data and simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). The O3 pollution episode was generally well simulated by the WRF-Chem air quality model. On August 24, the high O3 levels with the peak values of 250 µg m−3 occurred in the daytime mixing layer over the eastern YRD area. During nighttime, a shallow stable boundary layer formed near the surface, which decoupled the residual layer (RL) above it from the surface. O3 in the decoupled RL remained nearly constant, resulting an O3-rich reservoir, due to lack of NO titration and absence of dry deposition. The prevailing easterly wind in the lower troposphere transported the O3-rich air mass in the nocturnal RL from the eastern to western YRD. Consequently, the O3 concentrations in the RL over the western YRD area increased to 170 µg m−3 in the wee hours of August 25, 2016. Due to the growth of the convective boundary layer after the sunrise, entrainment of O3-rich RL air and boundary layer mixing contributed considerably to the rapid increase of surface O3. Process analysis indicated vertical mixing contributed ~ 40 µg m−3 h−1 of O3 accumulation over Nanjing in the morning of August 25, 2016, which played an important role in contributing to the severe daytime O3 pollution in the western YRD area. The mechanism of regional O3 transport through the nocturnal RL has a great implication for understanding O3 pollution in air quality change.
Characteristics of urban black carbon aerosols in the Yangtze River Delta of China based on long-term observations

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) aerosols are important absorbing components that can impact the regional climate and environment. To better understand the effects of BC, long-term variations in BC concentrations and the relationships between BC and other air pollutants were investigated in urban Nanjing in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) based on near-nine-year observations using a seven-channel aethalometer (AE-31). The BC concentrations in YRD city had substantial seasonal and diurnal variations, which are higher in winter (rush hours) and lower in summer (at noon). They had a significant declining trend since 2013 when the Action Plan for Air Pollution Prevention and Control was carried out, which was reduced by at least 45% from 2013 to 2019, and the same applies to heavy pollution episodes. The aerosol absorption coefficient (AAC) had temporal variations similar to those of the BC concentration because BC was the dominant component of absorbing aerosols (>80% at 550 nm). Investigations also indicated that the average contributions of BC from biomass burning (BCbb) and fossil fuel (BCff) to the total BCs concentration could be of equal importance. However, the ratios of BCbb to the total BCs in colder seasons were much higher than those in summer. Nevertheless, both BCbb and BCff might significantly contribute to the high BC loadings during particulate pollution episodes. Further comparisons showed that BCs had substantial positive correlations with CO and PM2.5. The relationships between BC and CO imply that the sources of fossil fuel BC aerosols in Nanjing might mainly came from the combustion of industrial coal and gasoline vehicles. An extremely high BC loading or higher BC/PM2.5 ratio always corresponded to a lower O3 concentration, implying that BC might have a substantial influence on O3 formation.

During nighttime from 24 to 25 August, a shallow stable boundary layer formed near the surface which decoupled the RL above it from the surface. Ozone in the decoupled RL remained quite constant, which resulted in an O3 -rich “reservoir” forming in this layer. This reservoir persisted due to the absence of O3 consumption from nitrogen oxide (NO) titration or dry deposition during nighttime. The prevailing easterly winds in the lower troposphere governed the regional transport of this O3 -rich air mass in the nocturnal RL from the eastern to the western YRD. As the regional O3 transport reached the RL over the western YRD, O3 concentrations in the RL accumulated and rose to 200 µ g m −3 over the western Nanjing site during the sunrise hours on 25 August. The development of the daytime convective boundary layer after sunrise resulted in the disappearance of the RL, as the vertical mixing in the convective boundary layer uniformly redistributed O3 from the upper levels via the entrainment of O3 -rich RL air down to the O3 -poor air at the ground. This net downward transport flux reached up to 35 µ g m −3 h −1 , and contributed a considerable surface O3 accumulation, resulting in severe daytime O3 pollution during the summer smog event on 25 August in the western YRD region. The mechanism of regional O3 transport through the nocturnal RL revealed in this study has great implications regarding understanding O3 pollution and air quality change.

Abstract:In recent decades, air pollution has become an important environmental problem in the megacities of eastern China. How to control air pollution in megacities is still a challenging issue because of the complex pollutant sources, atmospheric chemistry, and meteorology. There is substantial uncertainty in accurately identifying the contributions of transport and local emissions to the air quality in megacities. The COVID-19 outbreak has prompted a nationwide public lockdown period and provides a valuable opportunity for understanding the sources and factors of air pollutants. The three-month period of continuous field observations for aerosol particles and gaseous pollutants, which extended from January 2020 to March 2020, covered urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas in the typical megacity of Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China. In general, the concentrations of PM2.5–10, PM2.5, NOx, SO2, and CO reduced 58%, 47%, 83%, 11% and 30%, respectively, in the megacity during the COVID-Lock period. The reduction proportions of PM2.5 and CO were generally higher in urban and urban-industry areas than those in suburban areas. NOx exhibited the greatest reduction (>80%) among all the air pollutants, and the reduction was similar in the urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas. O3 increased 102%–125% during the COVID-Lock period. The daytime elevation of the planetary boundary layer height can reduce 30% of the PM10, PM2.5, NOx and CO concentrations on the ground in Hangzhou. During the long-range transport events, air pollutants on the regional scale likely contribute 40%–90% of the fine particles in the Hangzhou urban area. The findings highlight the future control and model forecasting of air pollutants in Hangzhou and similar megacities in eastern China.

Measurement and Model Analyses of the Ozone Variation During 2006 to 2015 and Its Response to Emission Change in Megacity Shanghai, China

Abstract:The fine particles (PM2.5) in China have decreased significantly in recent years as a result of the implementation of Chinese Clean Air Action Plan since 2013, while the O3 pollution is getting worse, especially in megacities such as Beijing and Shanghai. Better understanding of the elevated O3 pollution in Chinese megacities and its response to emission change is important for developing an effective emission control strategy in the future. In this study, we analyze the significant increasing trend of daily maximum O3 concentration from 2006 to 2015 in the megacity Shanghai with the variability of 0.8–1.3 ppbv yr−1. It could likely be attributed to the notable reduction in NOx concentrations with the decreasing rate of 1.86–2.15 ppbv yr−1 accompanied by the small change in VOCs during the same period by excluding the weak trends of meteorological impacts on local dispersion (wind speed), regional transport (wind direction), and O3 photolysis (solar radiation). It is further illustrated by using a state-of-the-art regional chemical and dynamical model (WRF-Chem) to explore the O3 variation response to the reduction in NOx emissions in Shanghai. The control experiment conducted for September of 2009 shows excellent performance for O3 and NOx simulations, including both the spatial distribution pattern and the day-by-day variation through comparison with six in situ measurements from the MIRAGE-Shanghai field campaign. Sensitivity experiments with 30 % reduction in NOx emissions from 2009 to 2015 in Shanghai estimated by Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center shows that the calculated O3 concentrations exhibit obvious enhancement by 4–7 ppbv in urban zones with increasing variability of 0.96–1.06 ppbv yr−1, which is consistent with the observed O3 trend as a result of the strong VOC-limited condition for O3 production. The large reduction in NOx combined with less change in VOCs in the past 10 years promotes the O3 production in Shanghai to move towards an NOx-limited regime. Further analysis of the WRF-Chem experiments and O3 isopleth diagram suggests that the O3 production downtown is still under a VOC-limited regime after 2015 despite the remarkable NOx reduction, while it moves to the transition regime between NOx-limited and VOC-limited in sub-urban zones. Supposing the insignificant VOC variation persists, the O3 concentration downtown would keep increasing until 2020 with the further 20 % reduction in NOx emission after 2015 estimated by Shanghai Clean Air Action Plan. The O3 production in Shanghai will switch from a VOC-limited to an NOx-limited regime after 2020 except for downtown area, which is likely close to the transition regime. As a result the O3 concentration will decrease by 2–3 ppbv in sub-urban zones and by more than 4 ppbv in rural areas as a response to a 20 % reduction in NOx emission after 2020, whereas it is not sensitive to both NOx and VOC changes downtown. This result reveals that the control strategy of O3 pollution is a very complex process and needs to be carefully studied.
Characteristics of Ozone and Particles in the Near-Surface Atmosphere in the Urban Area of the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:Aerosols and ozone have significant influences on air qualities, human health, and climate changes. To further understand the characteristics and interactions among different urban air pollutants in the west Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, continuous measurements of low-layer atmospheric particles and trace gases have been performed at an urban site in Nanjing from September 2016 to February 2017 in this study. In the urban area of the west YRD, the mean PM10 and O3 concentrations are 86.3 µg m−3 and 37.7 ppb, respectively, with significant seasonal and diurnal variations. Particles, which are dominated by fine aerosols, are relatively scattering. And most of their optical properties have similar variations to the aerosol concentrations. Results also show that the west YRD could still suffer severe air pollution, although the seasonal mean aerosol concentrations have decreased in recent years. Even in cold seasons, O3 could exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for about 40 days during the sampling period. Most of polluted episodes are caused by local and subregional emissions. A case study for a typical O3 and PM2.5 episode in December 2016 demonstrates that the episode was generally associated with regional transport and a stable weather system. Air pollutants were mostly transported from the western areas with high emissions, as well as with an anticyclone and high-pressure system in this region. Correlation analysis reveals that the interactions between O3 and PM are complex, with a combination of inhibition and promotion under different conditions. The inhibition effect might result from the reduction of photolysis frequency near the surface due to aerosols in addition to their positive correlations with precursors, while the promotion effect is from the formation of secondary aerosols under high concentrations of oxidants and solar radiation. However, the interaction between O3 and BC shows an inhibiting effect due to its chemical stability. This also indicated a VOC-sensitive regime for photochemical production of O3 in this region. This study further improves insight into the characteristics and interactions of main pollutants and may contribute to the improvement of the simulation and prediction of aerosols and gases in the urban area of the YRD.
Annual Variations of Black Carbon over the Yangtze River Delta from 2015 to 2018

Abstract:In this study, the black carbon (BC) measurements in the atmosphere of Nanjing, China were continuously conducted from 2015 to 2018 using a Model AE-33 aethalometer. By combining dataset of PM2 5, PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, O-3 and meteorological parameters, the temporal variations and the source apportionment of BC were given in this study. The results showed that the PM2 5 mass concentrations decreased in Nanjing, with an average annual rate of variation of 6.50 mu g/(m(3).year). Differently, the annual average concentrations of BC increased with an average annual variation rate of 214.71 ng/(m(3).year). The seasonal variations showed the pattern of BC mass concentrations in winter > autumn > spring > summer. The diurnal variations of BC mass concentrations showed a double-peak in all four seasons. The first peak occurred at approximately 7:00 in spring, summer and autumn and around 8:00 in winter. The second peak took place after 18:00. The average AAE (absorption Angstrom exponent) was 1.26 with a maximum of 1.35 during wintertime and the lowest (1.12) during summertime. In addition, the AAE was smaller in the daytime than that at night, with a minimum occurring between 13:00 and 14:00. BC and visibility show a good power-function relationship at different humidity levels. The average values of the visibility thresholds of the BC mass concentrations in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 1.326, 5.522, 1.340 and 0.708 mu g/m(3), respectively. Spatio-temporal characteristics of PM2.5 and O3 synergic pollutions and influence factors in the Yangtze River Delta

Abstract:Since the implementation of pollution prevention and control action in China in 2013, particulate pollution has been greatly reduced, while ozone pollution has become gradually severe, especially in the economically developed eastern region. Recently, a new situation of air pollution has emerged, namely, enhanced atmospheric oxidation, ascending regional ozone pollution, and increasing particle and ozone synergic pollution (i.e., double-high pollution). Based on the long-term observation data from 2015 to 2021, we examined the spatio-temporal characteristics of urban PM 2.5 and O 3 pollution in the Yangtze River Delta and quantified the effects of meteorological and non-meteorological factors on pollution in four city clusters using stepwise multiple linear regression models. Temporally, PM 2.5 decreased gradually year by year while, O 3 increased in city clusters. Spatially, PM 2.5 declined from northwest to southeast, while O 3 decreased from northeast to southwest. Except for southern Zhejiang, other city clusters suffer from complex air pollution at different levels. In general, pollution intensity and frequency vary with city location and time. Single PM 2.5 pollution mostly occurred in northern Anhui. Single O 3 pollution occurred in central and southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang. Synergic pollutions of PM 2.5 and O 3 mainly occurred in central Jiangsu. The contributions (90%) of non-meteorological factors (e.g., anthropogenic emission) to PM 2.5 decrease and O 3 increase are far larger than that of meteorological factors (5%). Relative humidity, sea level pressure, and planetary boundary layer height are the most important meteorological factors to drive PM 2.5 changes during pollution. Downward solar radiation, total cloud cover, and precipitation are the most important meteorological factors that affect O 3 changes during pollution. The results provide insights into particulate and ozone pollution in the Yangtze River Delta and can help policymakers to formulate accurate air pollution prevention and control strategies at urban and city cluster scales in the future.

Abstract:The optical properties of black carbon aerosols (BC) are determined by the particles size and the associated non-BC materials, which may be source-related or modified during secondary processing. The one-year long monitoring of BC was first conducted using a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) from December 2013 to November 2014 in Nanjing, a megacity in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. The seasonal variation in the BC size distribution and mixing state were investigated. There was no apparent systematic variation in the mean BC core mass median diameter between seasons, as these values were 226 ± 12 nm, 217 ± 13 nm, 211 ± 15 nm and 221 ± 12 nm for winter, spring, summer and autumn respectively. The mixing state of BC was quantified as the bulk relative coating thickness (defined as particle size Dp over core size Dc, Dp/Dc), which ranged from 1.05 to 2.65. The BC was found to be significantly more coated in the winter (Dp/Dc = 1.50 ± 0.30) than in other seasons (Dp/Dc = 1.27 ± 0.09, 1.28 ± 0.10, 1.27 ± 0.11 in spring, summer and autumn respectively). Higher levels of coating during the winter may due to the contributions of the primary source (with the highest BC mass loadings between seasons) or secondary processes such as low temperature that facilitated the condensation. It was found that the photochemical process may enhance the coatings on BC in summer. At nighttime, the reduced and stabilized planetary boundary layer and the nighttime secondary formation may also lead to BC becoming well mixed with other components. Moreover, BC was shown to be less coated when the NOx concentration was high. However, during all seasons, the BC coating was strongly correlated with other non-BC particulate mass, which suggests that at higher pollution levels BC was more significantly coated with other existing materials through coagulation or condensation by other secondary species.
Effects of significant emission changes on PM2.5 chemical composition and optical properties from 2019 to 2021 in a typical industrial city of eastern China

Abstract:Restrictions on emission controls were implemented in China to cope with the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), providing a chance to study the impacts of anthropogenic emissions on air quality. Subsequently, three-year measurements of PM2.5 chemical composition and light absorption were conducted in a typical megacity (Suzhou) of the Yangtze River Delta in China from 2019 to 2021. The annual observation period was divided into four different stages: Normal Days, Chinese New Year, Lockdown, and Work Resumption. Our results show that the concentrations of PM2.5 composition (e.g., SO4 2−, NO3 −, OC, and EC) and gas species (e.g., SO2, NO2, and CO) gradually decreased from 2019 to 2021, associated with emission reduction. During the four stages, the COVID-19 lockdown period had the lowest concentrations of PM2.5, indicating that strict emission control could significantly improve the air quality. The significant increase in O3 during the COVID-19 lockdown period is likely due to the reduced NO emission from the traffic. The Normal Days in 2020 had the highest mass loadings of SO4 2−, NO3 −, NH4 +, OC, and EC, while the mass concentrations of SO4 2−, NO3 −, NH4 +, Cl−, and Na+ in the Lockdown were the lowest. Meanwhile, aerosol light absorption has decreased yearly, and significant decreases in light absorption were observed during the COVID-19 lockdown. The high values of Absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) observed in Suzhou (ranging from 1.3 to 1.4), indicated that brown carbon played critical contributions to the light absorption. The mass concentration and fraction of fuel fossil were significantly higher than that of biomass burning during the entire campaign. The remarkable decline of fuel fossil BC during the COVID-19 lockdown can be attributed to the closure of factories and the reduction of vehicle emissions. The potential contribution source function analysis suggests a notable regional variation in the sources of fossil fuel and biomass combustion. Our results highlight that strict emission control could provide a positive direction for air pollution mitigation campaigns.

Abstract:We examined the spatial-temporal variations of surface-layer ozone (O3) and PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter of 2.5 μm or less) observed from April 2013 to December 2019 in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region to identify the O3-PM2.5 relationship and to focus on the co-polluted days by O3 and PM2.5. Averaged over the YRD, the observed annual mean concentration of maximum daily 8 h average ozone (MDA8 O3) increased by 36.8 μg m−3 (49.5%) whereas that of PM2.5 decreased by 13.3 μg m−3 (22.1%) over 2014–2019. During warm months of April-October of 2013–2019, the observed regional mean daily concentrations of MDA8 O3 and PM2.5 had a small positive correlation of 0.23, and this correlation coefficient became 0.44 when the long term trends were removed from the concentrations. The days with co-pollution of MDA8 O3 and PM2.5 (MDA8 O3 > 160 μg m−3 and PM2.5 > 75 μg m−3) were observed frequently, which reached 54 days in Shanghai and 71 days in Jiangsu province during 2013–2019. Such co-polluted days in the YRD were found to occur mainly in the months of April, May, June, and October. The occurrence of co-pollution in the YRD is found to be mainly dependent on relative humidity, surface air temperature, and wind speed. The mean anomalous values of these three variables were, respectively, −7.3%, 0.46 °C, −0.17 m s−1 for days with O3 pollution alone while −6.2%, 1.84 °C, and −0.40 m s−1 for days with co-pollution. Four typical weather patterns were identified to be associated with the co-polluted days. Our results provide better understanding of the complex air pollution and have implications for the control of such co-polluted events.

The influence of the black carbon warming effect on near-surface ozone in China in summer

Abstract:Black carbon aerosol (BC) has significant impacts on regional climate changes due to its absorption of solar radiation, which might lead to substantial variations in surface ozone (O 3 ) pollution. Therefore, the potential role of the BC warming effect on O 3 responses during summertime in China is investigated and quantified based on online-coupled regional climate-chemistry model (RegCM-Chem) simulations and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis. The results suggest that the absorption of solar radiation can lead to considerable decreases in cloud amount, precipitation and relative humidity in most regions of China in summer, which further cause a warming of the low-layer atmosphere and an enhancement in the southerly East Asian summer monsoon. The variations inO 3 concentrations in response to the BC warming effect are almost as large as the observed O 3 growth in China from 2013 to 2017 (7.2%). They have significant regional specificity over China. Due to the warming effect of BC, the near-surface daily O 3 concentrations are increased in most areas of Central to East China, with an increase of 6.2%, while they are decreased in Southwest China, with a reduction exceeding 5.8%, implying that BC emission reductions favor the mitigation of ozone pollution in East China in summer. Further investigations via MLR analysis indicate that the BC-induced O 3 increases in Central and East China and O 3 decreases in Southwest China are strongly related to changes in relative humidity, while the BC-induced O 3 increases in North and Northeast China are likely linked to the changes in transportation. These results may help us better understand the mechanism of O 3 variation and can provide a scientific reference for BC and O 3 reduction strategies over China.

Abstract:This study aims to understand the characteristics of surface ozone (O3), search for factors affecting the variations in its concentration, and estimate its impacts on the secondary organic carbon (SOC) levels and atmospheric oxidation capacities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). Four years of continuous observations (2014–2017) of the surface O3, organic carbon, elemental carbon, nitrogen oxides, PM2.5 and meteorological factors along with three years of measurements (2015–2017) of the concentrations of 56 volatile organic compounds were conducted at a rural site. Our measurements showed that the total number of O3 pollution days more than doubled over the four-year period, from 28 days in 2014 to 76 days in 2017. The annual mean of the maximum daily 8-h average O3 concentration during the months with the strongest solar radiation (July–September) showed a 6.8% growth rate, from 124.5 (2014) to 149.8 μg m−3 (2017). Regional transport was shown to be the dominant contributor to the high level of O3 based on a process analysis of the O3 variation using the Weather Research and Forecasting-Community Multiscale Air Quality model for this site. The simulation results indicated that the city junction site served well as an epitome of the regional background of the YRD. We also found that the level of SOC, which is a major component of PM2.5 that results from atmospheric oxidizing processes, gradually increased with the increase in the surface O3 level, even though the overall PM2.5 concentration significantly decreased each year. There was an increasingly strong correlation between SOC and Ox (O3 + nitrogen dioxide) during both the daytime and night-time from 2014 to 2017 when the highest annual O3 concentration was observed. These findings imply that the atmospheric oxidation capacity increased and likely contributed to the SOC production in the YRD during 2014–2017.

Air Quality During COVID-19 Lockdown in the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta: Two Different Responsive Mechanisms to Emission Reductions in China

Abstract:Despite the large reduction in anthropogenic activities due to the outbreak of COVID-19, air quality in China has witnessed little improvement and featured great regional disparities. Here, by combining observational data and simulations, this work aims to understand the diverse air quality response in two city clusters, Yangtze River Delta region (YRD) and Pearl River Delta region (PRD), China. Though there was a noticeable drop in primary pollutants in both the regions, differently, the maximum daily 8 h average ozone (O3) soared by 20.6–76.8% in YRD but decreased by 15.5–28.1% in PRD. In YRD, nitrogen oxide (NOx) reductions enhanced O3 accumulation and hence increased secondary aerosol formation. Such an increment in secondary organic and inorganic aerosols under stationary weather reached up to 36.4 and 10.2%, respectively, which was further intensified by regional transport. PRD was quite the opposite. The emission reductions benefited PRD air quality, while regional transport corresponded to an increase of 17.3 and 9.3% in secondary organic and inorganic aerosols, respectively. Apart from meteorology, the discrepancy in O3–VOCs–NOx relationships determined the different O3 responses, indicating that future emission control shall be regionally specific, instead of one-size-fits-all cut. Abstract:With rapid economic growth and urbanization, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China has experienced serious air pollution challenges. In this study, we analyzed the air pollution characteristics and their relationship with emissions and meteorology in the YRD region during 2014–2016. In recent years, the concentrations of all air pollutants, except O3, decreased. Spatially, the PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and CO concentrations were higher in the northern YRD region, and NO2 and O3 were higher in the central YRD region. Based on the number of non-attainment days (i.e., days with air quality index greater than 100), PM2.5 was the largest contributor to air pollution in the YRD region, followed by O3, PM10, and NO2. However, particulate matter pollution has declined gradually, while O3 pollution worsened. Meteorological conditions mainly influenced day-to-day variations in pollutant concentrations. PM2.5 concentration was inversely related to wind speed, while O3 concentration was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with relative humidity. The air quality improvement in recent years was mainly attributed to emission reductions. During 2014–2016, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NOx, CO, NH3, and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions in the YRD region were reduced by 26.3%, 29.2%, 32.4%, 8.1%, 15.9%, 4.5%, and 0.3%, respectively. Regional transport also contributed to the air pollution. During regional haze periods, pollutants from North China and East China aggravated the pollution in the YRD region. Our findings suggest that emission reduction and regional joint prevention and control helped to improve the air quality in the YRD region.

Abstract:Although much attention has been paid to investigating and controlling air pollution in China, the trends of air-pollutant concentrations on a national scale have remained unclear. Here, we quantitatively investigated the variation of air pollutants in China using long-term comprehensive data sets from 2013 to 2017, during which Chinese government made major efforts to reduce anthropogenic emission in polluted regions. Our results show a significant decreasing trend in the PM2.5 concentration in heavily polluted regions of eastern China, with an annual decrease of ∼7% compared with measurements in 2013. The measured decreased concentrations of SO2, NO2 and CO (a proxy for anthropogenic volatile organic compounds) could explain a large fraction of the decreased PM2.5 concentrations in different regions. As a consequence, the heavily polluted days decreased significantly in corresponding regions. Concentrations of organic aerosol, nitrate, sulfate, ammonium and chloride measured in urban Beijing revealed a remarkable reduction from 2013 to 2017, connecting the decreases in aerosol precursors with corresponding chemical components closely. However, surface-ozone concentrations showed increasing trends in most urban stations from 2013 to 2017, which indicates stronger photochemical pollution. The boundary-layer height in capital cities of eastern China showed no significant trends over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions from 2013 to 2017, which confirmed the reduction in anthropogenic emissions. Our results demonstrated that the Chinese government was successful in the reduction of particulate matter in urban areas from 2013 to 2017, although the ozone concentration has increased significantly, suggesting a more complex mechanism of improving Chinese air quality in the future.

Abstract:Photochemical pollution in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China is presently quite serious. It is important to ascertain the impacts of the anthropogenic precursors and the effectiveness of air quality management in the region based on long-term air quality trends independent of meteorological influences. In this study, Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filtering, a technique used to separate different scales of motion in a time series, was applied to analyze the time series of the maximum daily 8-h running average for O-3 (MDA8) from 16 cities in the YRD during 2013-2017, and its trends and driving factors were discussed. Results of the KZ filtering revealed that the short-term, seasonal and long-term components of O-3 account for 54.2%, 43.4%, and 2.3% of the total variance, respectively. Long-term component of MDA8 in the YRD is comparable to that of Los Angeles in the 1990s and the most recent 4 years, and is much higher than those of Berlin, Paris and London. The long-term trend in the YRD indicates that MDA8 underwent a large increase during 2013-2017, at average rates of 1.35-8.14 mu gm(-3)/yr for specific cities. Only Taizhou in Zhejiang Province had a decreasing trend of -0.69 mu gm(-3)/yr. This pattern could be attributed to emission changes of O-3 precursors (76.7%), particularly a reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and an increase in the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Large decreases in particulate matter were estimated to be responsible for O-3 increases of 22% on average for cities in the YRD, impling that further decreases in NOx and VOCs emissions are necessary in order to overcome the effect of decreasing PM2.5 causing an increase in ozone.
