Abstract:The effect of rumen ammonia concentration on microbial protein synthesis and fermentation was studied in three separate experiments. In each experiment three separate sheep were fed semi-purified diets [designated A (‘concentrate’), B (‘roughageconcentrate’) or C (‘roughage’)] and infused intra-ruminally with five graded amounts of urea according to a randomised block design. Rumen ammonia concentrations remained low until the total nitrogen intake was about 10 g day−1 after which rumen ammonia concentration rose rapidly. Rumen and duodenal ammonia concentrations were linearly related (r=0.90, 0.98 and 0.84 for diets A, B and C, respectively; P< 0.001). Microbial protein production did not increase when rumen ammonia concentrations exceeded 2.8 mM for diet A, 6.0 mM for diet B and 1.6 mM for diet C. Diets A and C produced a propionate-type fermentation while diet B was characterised by an acetate-type fermentation. Rumen ammonia concentration had no apparent effect on either concentration or the molar proportions of volatile fatty acids. There were no systematic trends in digestibility in relation to rumen ammonia concentration.

Abstract:China confronts a challenging dilemma between environmental protection and economic development as it endeavors to achieve dual carbon goals. To discern a feasible developmental path, this paper designs a comprehensive index of the digital economy encompassing four dimensions: input, production, output, and consumption, conducts an empirical analysis to explore the relationship between the digital economy and carbon emissions by using a two-way fixed effect model with China's provincial data from 2013 to 2019, and suggests that the digital economy can significantly reduce carbon emissions and carbon intensity. Public low carbon awareness and green innovation are mechanisms that mediate the association between the digital economy and carbon emissions. The carbon reduction effect varies across dimensions of the digital economy, regions, and sources of carbon emissions. These empirical findings provide valuable insights and policy implications to effectively achieve China's dual carbon goals.

Abstract:In the context of global digitalization, fostering the expansion of the digital economy holds immense importance in promoting energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Utilizing a sample of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2019, this research analyzes the impact of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions in China. This study employs various methods, including principal component analysis, fixed-impact model, and mediating effect model. Based on the research findings, the development of the digital economy has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions in metropolitan areas. Moreover, these effects are especially noticeable in cities located to the east of the Hu Huanyong Line. These cities are characterized by limited reliance on resources and a high level of marketization. Further research reveals that promoting technical innovation and modernizing industrial structures can reduce the intensity of carbon emissions in metropolitan areas. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the effective reduction of carbon emissions in developing countries during the evolution of the digital economy. It acts as a crucial cornerstone for guiding policies and executing strategies aimed at fostering top-tier economic development in the future. The findings of this study confirm the inhibitory effect of the digital economy on urban carbon emission intensity. However, this study has limitations in data samples, research scope, and depth of mechanism analysis, which prevent a full exploration of the spatial spillover effect of the digital economy and other factors. Therefore, the conclusions drawn in this study can only provide empirical evidence for identifying the relationship between the digital economy and carbon emission intensity to a certain extent. Future research should aim to expand on these aspects.

Abstract:The digital economy, being a nascent technology, has exerted a substantial sway on how businesses are produced, how governments are run, how people live, etc. Considering this, additional investigation is required to gain a deeper comprehension of the connection between digital economic expansion and the impact of pollutant reduction, as well as the impact mechanism at play. Accordingly, using panel data from city-level data in China spanning the years 2011–2019 for analysis, this research explores the effects and mechanisms of digital economic growth on urban industrial pollution emission reduction. A two-way fixed effects model is applied. The outcomes demonstrate that a particular inflection point value determines how much the digital economy may reduce urban industrial pollutant emissions. Specifically, only when the digital economic development index surpasses 10 does it become viable to generate the emission reduction effect. The digital economic promotional influence on the decrease of urban industrial pollution emissions grows as industrial company service levels rise. Moreover, in regions with high market segmentation, in the eastern territories, and areas with strong policy support, the digital economy exhibits a lower inflection point for demonstrating its discharge lessening effects.

Abstract:The digital economy has great potential to boost innovation and social productivity, and it plays an important role in helping to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. This study focuses on analyzing and testing the role of the digital economy in promoting carbon reduction in Chinese cities. Based on panel data of 282 cities in China from 2011 to 2019, this study measured the development level of the digital economy and carbon emission intensity by constructing a digital economy development level evaluation index system and a carbon emission inversion model, respectively. It was found that the digital economy can significantly reduce urban carbon emissions by promoting industrial structure upgrading and green innovation, and the digital economy will have a more obvious promotion effect on urban carbon emission reduction over time. This conclusion was found to be valid after we performed robustness tests such as the instrumental variable method, quasi-experimental analysis, and placebo test. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis showed that eastern, regenerative, and provincial capital cities are better able to promote carbon emission reduction under the development of the digital economy. This study provides new empirical evidence at the city level for developing the digital economy to reduce urban carbon emissions and acts as a useful reference for developing countries to realize "smart carbon emission reduction".

Abstract:Digital technologies hold significant potential for addressing environmental issues, such as air pollution and rising global temperatures. China is focusing on accelerating the dual transformation of industrial greening and digitization to accomplish the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and sustainable economic growth. By combining a two-way fixed effect model, a mediated effect model, and a panel threshold model, this research endeavors to explore the effect that the expansion of the digital economy has on the level of carbon emission intensity that is produced by industry. The research yielded the following primary conclusions. (1) The digital economy effectively reduces the industrial carbon intensity via three distinct mechanisms: enhancements to the technological and innovative capacities of China, improvements in energy efficiency, and enhancements to the country's overall industrial structure. (2) Regions where industrialization and digitization are highly integrated and developing, as well as the early pilot regions of the Comprehensive Big Data Pilot Zones, are particularly susceptible to this inhibitory effect. This research offers a theoretical backing for advancements in the digital economy; the achievement of energy-saving and carbon-reducing sustainable development objectives; and the establishment of green, ecologically friendly, and recycling development strategies.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of the digital economy, it is essential to understand its impact on carbon emissions reduction. This study uses provincial panel data from China during 2011–2019 to construct a moderating mediating effect model and a spatial panel Durbin model to examine the relationship between the digital economy and carbon emissions reduction. This study analyzes the mediating effect of the energy structure on the digital economy's impact on carbon emission reduction, and the spatial effect and regional heterogeneity of the digital economy's impact on carbon emission reduction. The findings indicate that the development of the digital economy can effectively promote regional carbon emission reductions, both directly and indirectly, with a significant spatial spillover effect. Second, the energy structure plays a significant mediating role in promoting carbon emission reduction in the digital economy, and the industrial structure has a positive moderating effect. Third, the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions reduction has significant regional heterogeneity, and the inhibitory effect of the digital economy is more effective in the central and western provinces. This study provides a theoretical reference for achieving high-quality development of the digital economy while promoting carbon emissions reduction.

Abstract:As a new economic form, the digital economy is not only empowering new impetus to economic growth, but also reshaping specific business forms of economical operation. Therefore, we conducted an empirical test to verify the impact and mechanism of pollution reduction in the digital economy, based on the panel data of 280 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2019. The results show that, first the development of the digital economy indeed has the positive effect of realizing pollution reduction. The results of mediating effect test indicate the influence mechanism mainly rely on promoting the upgrading of industrial structure (structural effect) and upgrading the level of green technology innovation (technical effect). Second, the results of regional heterogeneity analysis show that the emission reduction effect of digital economy development on four pollutants is characterized by weakness in the east and strong in the west in regional distribution. Third, the development of digital economy has a threshold effect on the level of economic development to achieve its pollution reduction effect. Further identification of the threshold effect indicates that the higher the level of economic development, the better in emission reduction effect.

Abstract:Advancing the digital economy while curbing carbon emissions is essential for fostering high-quality economic growth. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2011 to 2021, this study adopts an empirical model to investigate the direct influence of digital economic development on carbon emissions and utilizes both a mediating effects model and a moderating effects model to explore the transmission mechanism of green technological innovation and the moderating effect of R&D investment. The research results indicate that the following: (1) The digital economy contributes to carbon emissions reduction. (2) The analysis of heterogeneity demonstrates that the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions is pronounced in the eastern and central regions of China but is insignificant in the western provinces. Furthermore, the carbon mitigation effect of the digital economy is more potent in regions with high marketization compared to those with low marketization. (3) The mediation effect analysis shows that green technology innovation plays a transmitting role between the digital economy and carbon emissions reduction. (4) The moderating effect test reveals that R&D investment enhances the digital economy's ability to reduce carbon emissions. The conclusions highlight the need to optimize digital economy development and strengthen green technology innovation to achieve carbon emissions reduction.

Abstract:The digital economy serves as a pivotal catalyst for sustainable and eco-friendly development. This study employs a suite of advanced econometric models, including the fixed effects, mediation, threshold and moderation model, to elucidate the intricate dynamics by which the digital economy influences carbon emissions through the lens of green innovation. Building on the existing research on digital economy, green technology innovation and carbon emissions, this paper takes a dual-innovation perspective and divides green technology innovation into disruptive green technology innovation and incremental green technology innovation. And from the government and the public level, it explores how social concerns affect the effect of digital economy on carbon emissions. The analysis is grounded in a comprehensive dataset encompassing a decade of provincial-level data from 2011 to 2021 across China's 30 provinces. The benchmark regression outcomes indicate the digital economy's ability to substantially cut down carbon emissions; the threshold effect and mediating effect models demonstrate that a single-threshold effect exists and that disruptive and progressive green technological innovations mediate such ability. Additional research reveals that the digital economy's impact on carbon emissions could be positively moderated by public and governmental attention. Eastern and western regions in China, as well as those with high levels of foreign investment and low levels of technological transaction activity, are more affected by the digital economy in terms of carbon emission reduction. Our conclusions offer practical recommendations for digital economy's coordinated advancement and carbon emissions mitigation, and guide local governments to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract:Under the new development model, the digital economy has become a new engine to promote the green development of the economy and realize the goal of "double carbon". Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2020, this paper empirically investigates the impact of the development of the digital economy on energy and carbon emissions using a series of econometric models such as baseline regression, a mechanism test, and the spatial Durbin model, etc. Common prosperity plays an intermediary role between digital economy development and carbon emissions; digital economic development optimizes resource allocation, effectively solves the problem of uneven resource distribution, and reduces energy and carbon emissions while achieving common prosperity. In addition, green innovation, industrial structure, urbanization level, R&D intensity, and the degree of marketization also have different degrees of influence on energy and carbon emissions. Therefore, the government should accelerate the construction of new digital infrastructure and implement the digital economy development strategy according to local conditions, so as to promote the digital economy to produce a more significant carbon emission reduction effect.

Abstract:The digital transformation of enterprises is a significant catalyst for achieving cleaner production and directly affects a company's carbon performance. This research elucidates the theoretical logic and potential impact mechanisms of digital transformation in reducing corporate carbon emissions. Second, using a panel data set of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2020, this study quantitatively investigates the effect of corporate digital transformation on the carbon emissions intensity of businesses. The empirical results indicate that corporate digital transformation has a statistically significant negative effect on the carbon emissions intensity of Chinese firms. Several robustness tests have validated this conclusion. The heterogeneity analysis reveals that state-owned businesses, firms with high carbon intensity, and those with strong financing capacity would benefit more from digital transformation in achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, the impact of digital transformation on corporate carbon emission abatement is more prominent in industries with limited technological input and high energy consumption. At the regional level, digital transformation has a more significant impact on reducing carbon emissions in cities with stringent environmental regulation, advanced marketization, and resource-based economies. The transmission mechanism analysis confirms that improving corporate energy use efficiency, enhancing financial performance, and fostering green innovation are crucial transmission mechanisms through which digital transformation can help enterprises decrease their carbon emissions. These findings assist companies in comprehending the role of digital transformation in lowering carbon emissions and provide them with valuable insights.

Abstract:In the current discourse surrounding economic and societal growth, much emphasis has been placed on the role and impact of digitalization. Despite this trend, research exploring the ecological implications of the digital economy remains scarce. To fill this research gap, our study aimed to investigate the correlation between the digital economy and carbon emissions, specifically examining the moderating impact of environmental regulations. For empirical analysis, we utilize the CRITIC methodology to establish a thorough set of indicators that can evaluate the performance of China’s digital economy. According to our empirical results, the digital economy seems to exert a moderating influence on the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and this negative impact is more pronounced in affluent and densely populated regions of China. The effectiveness of digitalization in reducing pollution can be enhanced by the enforcement of environmental regulations. This paper elucidates the potential mechanisms via which the digital economy affects carbon dioxide emissions, and constructs a framework for the mechanisms via which the digital economy affects the environment by influencing the carbon dioxide emissions, providing a new way for enterprises and governments to participate in environmental protection and expanding the content of research related to the digital economy.

Abstract:Recently, the progress of reaching carbon emission peaks and achieving carbon neutrality has had significant impacts on the global economy. The overall societal efforts on carbon emission reduction from various industries will likely be strengthened, thanks to the advantages enterprises could gain in digital technologies through a structural upgrade in the energy systems. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2011 to 2019, this paper constructs a spatial panel Durbin model and a mediating effect model to investigate the mechanism and influence of the digital economy on carbon emission reduction. The results show that (1) the development of the digital economy has a significant spatial spillover effect on carbon emission reduction; (2) the digital economy influences carbon emission reduction both directly and indirectly. This means that the carbon emission reduction can be affected indirectly by the digital economy through the transformation of energy structure; (3) the carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy exhibits regional heterogeneity, it is more prominent in eastern regions than in other areas. The above findings provide substantial empirical evidence to policymakers on how to best promote the development of the digital economy and intensify the coordination of China’s digital infrastructure in regional environmental governance.

How does the digital economy empower corporate ESG? Evidence from China

Abstract:Based on the realistic background of corporate digitalization and green development, this paper explored how the digital economy can empower corporate Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG). Taking A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2021 as a research sample, this paper used methods such as mediation effect analysis, moderating effect analysis, and endogenous testing. This paper found that the digital economy could drive the improvement of corporate ESG performance significantly, especially for the environmental and social aspects. The improvement effect is more obvious for companies with heavily pollution and green financial environments. The results of the mechanism showed that the empowerment of the digital economy to corporate ESG could be achieved through two paths: Easing financing constraints and promoting green economic development. The results showed that the digital economy could achieve deep integration with corporate environmental governance, social responsibility, and internal governance. Moreover, the digital economy could improve the level of corporate ESG through policy support and have inspirational meaning for the empowerment of the digital economy to corporate ESG.

Abstract:The digital economy is progressively emerging as the new driving force behind economic and social advancement. Whether the digital economy can drive the green transformation development still requires further exploration. Drawing on the data of 275 prefecture-level cities in China from 2010 to 2019, we employ the time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) method to investigate the influence of the digital economy on regional carbon emissions. By considering the Chinese National Big Data Comprehensive Experimental Zone (NBDCEZ) as a quasi-natural experiment for the development of regional digital economies, we aim to shed light on the potential relationship between these two sectors and their impact on environmental sustainability. The results reveal that the construction of NBDCEZ reduces regional CO 2 by about 14.4%, and the value of emission reduction achieved is about 8.5*10 7 USD. The mechanism analysis indicates that the construction of NBDCEZ achieves the emission reduction target by stimulating green innovation, mobilizing public environmental participation, and cutting energy consumption. Heterogeneity analysis suggests that NBDCEZ exhibits a notable effect on reducing carbon emissions in the eastern regions, non-resource-based cities, larger cities and regions with better digital infrastructure. The findings of this paper provide empirical insights for achieving the goal of energy saving and emission control.

Abstract:Improving energy efficiency and lowering carbon emissions are of great importance to realize the “dual carbon” goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Digital economy is a new engine of economic development, but whether or how it affects energy efficiency and carbon emissions are unclear. Utilizing panel data of China's 30 provinces from 2012 to 2019, this study empirically explores the relationships among digital economy, energy efficiency, and carbon emissions. Meanwhile, from the perspective of energy efficiency, applying mediation models and panel threshold model, it analyzes the direct, indirect, and nonlinear influencing mechanisms of digital economy on carbon emissions. The results reflect that the development of digital economy in China intensifies carbon emissions. Energy efficiency serves as a vital partial mediator between the two. The enhancement of energy efficiency can lower carbon emissions. However, the development of digital economy is not conducive to improving energy efficiency, thereby, indirectly increasing carbon emissions. The mediating effect of energy efficiency accounts for 30.58 % of the total effect of digital economy on carbon emissions. Meanwhile, taking energy efficiency into account, the impact of digital economy on carbon emissions has a significant double-threshold effect and presents an N-shaped trend. [0.824, 0.912] is the optimal range of energy efficiency, within which the growth of the digital economy can empower carbon emission abatement to some extent. In addition, the expansion of population size, the coal-based energy consumption structure, and the industrial structure significantly increase carbon emissions. The improvements in living standards and environmental regulations can help to decrease carbon emissions, but the emission abatement effects are not significant. Those conclusions reveal the importance of optimizing the level and quality of digital economy and adopting differentiated digital economy development policies based on energy efficiency to achieve carbon emission reduction.

Abstract:The development of the digital economy has promoted a new round of technological innovation and industrial transformation, in the era of the digital economy, can the rapidly developing digital economy promote carbon reduction? Based on the panel data of Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2019, this study calculated the digital economy index and total factor carbon emission performance in China. This study also constructed a spatial Durbin model and a mediation effect model to explore the mechanism and impact of the digital economy on carbon emission performance. The results show that: (1) The digital economy significantly promotes the improvement of carbon emission performance, and this conclusion still holds true after using instrumental variables and robustness tests. (2) The impact of the digital economy on carbon emission performance has spatial spillover effects. (3) The impact of the digital economy on carbon emission performance has regional heterogeneity, and the digital economy in the eastern china has a greater promoting effect on carbon emission performance. (4) Mechanism analysis shows that the digital economy can suppress market segmentation, thereby promoting the improvement of carbon emission performance. The above research results provide policymakers with a large amount of empirical evidence on how to better guide the development of the digital economy and promote market integration. Also, the development of the digital economy has played an important role in promoting carbon reduction.
