Abstract:Although parental involvement is among the most crucial aspects of social support for students' school engagement and achievement, current review work on the relationship between parental involvement and student engagement is largely missing. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review on such topics from the perspectives of landscapes, methodology characteristics (e.g., conceptualisation and measurement), and study patterns from 2000–2022. Following PRISMA guidelines, 33 articles involving 47,307 students and 3391 parents were reviewed. The results yielded several interesting facts. First, studies on this topic were primarily conducted in the United States during the first decade, but publications increased during emergency remote teaching (ERT) and China produced most of the publications. Studies were primarily cross-sectional (72.7%) and used secondary school Caucasian or Asian samples. In addition, although studies varied greatly on the conceptualisation and measurement of parental involvement and student engagement, they seem to embrace the idea of measuring parental involvement via school and home subtypes (85%) and student engagement via ABC dimensions (i.e., affective, behavioural, and cognitive; 57.4%). Moreover, in terms of patterns, studies often (82%) investigated its relations with student engagement or how it mediated the connections between parental involvement and learning achievement (e.g., success at school, dropout). They, however, often failed to provide concrete/practical parental involvement strategies. This pattern of results indicated an urgent need for more studies on specific parental involvement practices that could promote student engagement from multiple stakeholders. Limitations and suggestions for future studies were provided accordingly.

Meta-analysis of the relationship between social support and subjective well-being of Chinese college students

Abstract:[Objective] To explore the relationship between social support and college students' subjective well-being based on the social support rating scale, and explore the research characteristics that affect the relationship between the two. [Methods] We searched the databases of CNKI, Wanfang and VIP, collected the articles on social support and college students' subjective well-being published from 2003 to 2023, and used CMA software to conduct meta-analysis. [Results] A total of 40 articles were included and 40 independent samples were generated, with a total of 27740 samples. The results showed that subjective support, objective support and utilization of support were positively correlated with the overall subjective well-being of college students, life satisfaction and positive emotions, and negatively correlated with negative emotions. The correlation between the two was regulated by the test group, that is, the correlation between the two was different in different test groups.
Measuring social support perceived by inclusive education teachers in China

Abstract:<span>Social support perceived by inclusive education teachers is seldom empirically investigated, and there are few tools to measure it. This research aims to develop a valid instrument to investigate inclusive education teachers' social support and to determine the current situation of such support in China. A total of 216 and 367 valid questionnaires from teachers in elementary and junior high inclusive education schools were collected in study 1 and study 2, respectively. The findings indicated that (1) Chinese inclusive education teachers' social support was represented by a four-factor model with high reliability and validity that included professional, emotional, administrative and material support; (2) teachers received mostly emotional support, followed by administrative support, material support, and then professional support; and (3) demographic variables such as age, length of service, academic qualification, training time, and establishment of a school resource room had significant influences on teachers' perceived social support. The study contributes to developing a conceptual framework and measurement instrument for Chinese inclusive education teachers' social support. It provides practical implications for the improvement of current Chinese teacher education programmes and the development of high-quality inclusive education.</span>

Feasibility of Gauss-Newton method for indoor positioning

Abstract:This paper addresses the feasibility of using iterative least-squares (ILS) methods for indoor positioning, where coordinates are to be determined based on estimated/measured ranges. Special attention is given to the Gauss-Newton method, since it is well suited for solving (small residual) non-linear problems and most commonly applied in positioning. Dealing with non-linear inverse problems, the parameter estimation possibly features local minima next to the sought for global one, and the position estimator is inherently biased. In satellite positioning systems, e.g. GPS, or other large scale systems, an initial guess that leads the iterative method to a global convergence is not hard to obtain, and the bias due to non-linearity is negligible. However, in indoor systems, both effects can become problematic, and therefore extra care needs to be taken to properly apply the ILS methods. Two schemes are proposed in this paper, one to obtain a good initial guess and the other to test the significance of the bias due to non-linearity. The validation of the proposed schemes is supported by simulations as well as by experimental results obtained with an UWB acoustic positioning system, which achieves centimeter level positioning accuracy with LoS propagation and full bandwidth between 3.6 and 12.1 kHz (with equal wavelength compared to the radio signals with the bandwidth between 3.1 to 10.6 GHz allowed for UWB radio communications). The proposed schemes are validated with a number of system setups, differing in the positions of transmitters, the position of the receiver, redundancy, the bandwidth used and therefore the range measurement error.

Abstract:Existing literature indicates that motivation is the most powerful determining factor that influences the rate and success of second language learning (Jiang, 2016; Kramsch & Yin, 2018; Li & Edwards, 2017; Liu et al., 2016; Liu, 2016; You & Dörnyei, 2016; Zhi & Wang, 2019). Currently, there is a growing body of empirical research indicating the changes in second language learning motivation at different school levels at the same or different schools (Chambers, 1999; Kim, 2011, 2012a, b; Lamb, 2007; Williams et al., 2002). The findings of previous studies have mostly shown that student second language learning motivation increases with increasing school levels. Do ̈rnyei (2000) suggested that concentrating on the time dimension of second language motivation is crucial for comprehending the second language motivation of students. However, the temporal variations of second language motivation, particularly motivational changes at different Chinese secondary school levels, have not been emphasized by second language motivation researchers, therefore, this quantitative research investigated the changes in Chinese secondary school students’ English learning motivation from junior high to high school. An English learning motivation questionnaire was used and administered to 3000 students from Grades 7 to 12 in public secondary schools across Mainland China, and employed the reliability analysis and analysis of variance to analyze quantitative data. The statistical results revealed that Chinese high school students ranked highest in English learning motivation, followed by junior high school students. Furthermore, the college entrance examination had a positive impact on high school students' motivation to learn English.

Abstract:BackgroundDue to the COVID-19 pandemic， both teenagers' studies and personal life are critically affected， which has resulted in a variety of mental health problems. In this regard， scholars at home and abroad have carried out a large number of research concerning adolescent mental health， of which there still exists a lack of systematic combing and review.ObjectiveTo understand the status and development trend of research on adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic at home and abroad， and to grasp the current research hotspots and trends in this field， so as to provide references for relevant research and practice in the post-epidemic era.MethodsOn October 30， 2022， we searched through China Knowledge Network Infrastructure （CNKI） and Web of Science database， and the publishing time of articles to be retrieved was limited between December 1， 2019 and October 30， 2022. Excel and CiteSpace were used to perform visual analysis on these articles in terms of number， author， institution， country and keywords of the articles.ResultsA total of 7 608 articles were included. At home and abroad， the number of papers related to adolescent mental health generally increased at first and then decreased under the pandemic situation. Compared with foreign countries， the connection and cooperation among domestic scholars and institutions was not close enough. The top three countries in the number of English literature published were the United States， Britain and China， and those in intermediary center were Tunis， Cameroon and Anguilla. The parent-child relationship and mental health of teenagers during were much concerned by scholars both at home and abroad. With the passage of time， researchers at home and abroad had shifted their focus from only negative factors to positive factors.ConclusionChinese scholars or institutions need to strengthen more domestic and international exchanges and cooperation. Chinese Students’ Health Literacy Level and Its Associated Factors: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Health Literacy (HL) is an important determinant of health. Many scholars have conducted a large number of studies on the level of Chinese students’ HL and its associated factors. However, previous studies on HL level and the factors that influence it have been contradictory. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the level of Chinese students’ HL and its three dimensions (knowledge, behavior and skills) and to identify factors associated with HL in Chinese students. Two investigators independently searched literature, selected research and extracted data through comprehensively searching of four international electronic databases and three Chinese electronic database to identify all relevant observational studies on affecting factors for HL in Chinese students published in English and Chinese from database January, 2010 to September, 2020. In total, 61 articles were extracted in the study. The results showed that the level rates of HL and its three dimensions were 26%, 35%, 26%, 51%, respectively. For Chinese students, the significant factors were urban residents, senior class students, well performance at school, the Han nationality, focus on health knowledge, less exposure to video games, highly educated parents, income of one-child families, receiving health education, having medical background. This study provides some inspirations for improving the level of Chinese students’ HL and their health. First, the findings may help Chinese policy makers understand the overall HL of Chinese students and their levels across three dimensions (knowledge, behavior and skills). Second, protective factors for Chinese students’ HL were found in this research, which will help to improve the level of Chinese students’ HL, stimulate students’ awareness of prevention, and lay the foundation for a healthy China.

Interventions in Chinese Undergraduate Students' Mental Health: Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Over 30% of university students from 8 countries were afflicted with mental distress according to a World Health Organization survey. Undergraduate students in increasing numbers in China have also been reported to suffer from different mental problems. Various psychological distresses significantly impact their academic and daily life, thereby causing role impairments and unsatisfactory academic achievements. While the prevalence of, diverse underlying factors for, and interventions of social support in college students' mental health have extensively been investigated in China, there is no study exclusively focusing on the impact of interventions on their psychological well-being. Objective: The aim of this review was to identify and synthesize the interventions in the mental health concerns of Chinese undergraduate students studying in China reported in the literature to inform educational authorities, college and university management, students' affairs counselors, and mental health providers. Methods: We performed a systematic review and reported the research findings of previous studies according to the protocol of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020 statement. First, based on the predefined search strategy, keyword searches were performed in the PubMed and ProQuest databases to retrieve relevant studies. Subsequently, we screened the candidate articles based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, we analyzed the included papers for qualitative synthesis. Results: We retrieved a total of 675 studies from the PubMed and ProQuest databases using the search strategy on March 15, 2022. Among these candidate studies, 15 that were not written in English, 76 duplicates, and 149 studies of other document types were removed before screening. An additional 313 studies were excluded in the screening process, with 73 articles ruled out for being not relevant to interventions, not related to mental health, or not focused on undergraduate students in the full-text review. As a result, 49 papers were eligible and included in this systematic review. In the qualitative synthesis, we divided the interventions reported in the selected studies into two categories: (1) social support from government authorities, university authorities, students' affairs counselors and teachers, family members, health care authorities and professionals, and the media (various online platforms), and (2) various coping strategies adopted by undergraduate students themselves. We identified further research on mental health interventions that may be delivered by digital medical platforms, conversational agents (eg, chatbots), and researchers. Conclusions: This was the first systematic review of interventions to address the mental health concerns of Chinese undergraduate students studying in China. The categorization of reported interventions and the identification of new intervention channels can effectively inform stakeholders. Interventions for undergraduate students' mental health is a research topic worth further investigation.
Sports motivation in Chinese college students: A systematic review

Abstract:Background According to the 2014 National Physical Fitness and Health Monitor, people aged 9 to 22 exhibit limited physical activity, with a large proportion exercising for less than 1 h daily. China has focused on the study of college student sports motivation. This study comprehensively analyzed sports motivation studies and their relevant factors on Chinese college students. Methods The researchers searched CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), WANFANG DATA, Cqvip, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library for sports motivation in Chinese college students. Articles from 2018 to 2023 were searched. The final analysis included 30 pieces of literatures that met the topic criteria. Results The results show that Chinese college students' sports motivation studies used large sample sizes and covered most of China. The main sports motivations are health, shape, and relaxation. Demography, psychology, social support, physical environment, and policy aspects affect sports motivation. Lack of use of qualitative and longitudinal studies. Conclusion In the future, scholars who research the sports motivation of Chinese college students need to pay more attention to social support, physical environment, and policy. Furthermore, scholars may try to use qualitative and longitudinal studies.
Study on the influence of social support on the effect of science education in rural primary schools

Abstract:This paper analyses the influence of different social support on the effect of science education in rural primary schools, based on the data of rural primary school teachers in 5 re¬gions of Heilongjiang Province in China. The study found that the independent effects of the five social supports such as economic support, the support of science education venues, the guidance of science education and teaching on-site, improvement training of science teacher quality, serve as a science education counsellor on the effect of science education in rural primary schools were significant. The improvement training of science teacher quality and the guidance of science education and teaching on-site still has a great influence on the effect of science education in rural primary schools under the background of different school characteristics, and under sufficient and insufficient capital of science teaching. However, the impact of economic support, the support of science education venues, serving as a science education counsellor is not significant. Therefore, in order to better provide high-quality social support for science education in rural primary schools, a multi-subject science education alliance, led by the county educational administrative departments, should be established to improve coordination and matching degree of social support resource. A science education demand evaluation system, should be established in rural primary schools, to enhance the accuracy of social support services. The quality improvement of science teachers should be taken as the core of social support to clarify the direction of social support.

The impact of school life and family involvement on Western China junior high school students' wellbeing at multidimensional levels

Abstract:Background: The focus of students' health concerns has gradually progressed from the single factor of physical health to comprehensive health factors, and the physical and mental health of students are now generally considered together. This study focuses on exploring the status of junior high school students' physical health and their subjective health assessment with the major societal factors that affect students' lives: School Life and Family involvement. In addition, we explore the main factors influencing students' subjective health. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 190 Tibetan junior high school students in the Maozhuang Township. The intentional sampling was used to choose the research object. The structured questionnaire comprised four parts, namely social and demographic information, family condition, school life, and subjective health quality which was assessed by PROMIS (Chinese version of the Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System). Result: The average height and weight of boys and girls are statistically different (p-values of 0.026 and 0.044, respectively), but there is no statistically significant difference in BMI (Body Mass Index) between boys and girls (p-value of 0.194). The average values of the five dimensions of depression, anger, anxiety, fatigue, and peer relationships in the PROMIS of the research subjects were 58.9 ± 5.3, 53.3 ± 8.0, 58.1 ± 7.3, 52.8 ± 8.0, 39.3 ± 6.6. In the demographic dimension, the grade was the main factor influencing anger (p < 0.01) and fatigue (p < 0.01), while gender was related to peer relationships (p = 0.02). In the family dimension, the father's educational level was related to peer relationships (p = 0.05), while the family financial situation was related to depression (p = 0.01). In the school life dimension, relationship with classmates was found to affect anger (p = 0.05), while homework was related to anxiety (p = 0.02) and fatigue (p = 0.05). Conclusion: the physical health index BMI and subjective health evaluation of students are worse than students of more developed areas in China. Their family environment and school life all have varying degrees of impact on the five subjective health outcomes. There are differences in gender and grade level. The government and society need to pay more attention to the physical and mental health of students in remote and underdeveloped areas and improve their health through a student nutrition plan and the establishment of mental health offices.
School educational models and child mental health among K-12 students: a scoping review

Abstract:Background The promotion of mental health among children and adolescents is a public health imperative worldwide, and schools have been proposed as the primary and targeted settings for mental health promotion for students in grades K-12. This review sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of key factors involved in models of school education contributing to student mental health development, interrelationships among these factors and the cross-cultural differences across nations and societies. Methods This scoping review followed the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and holistically reviewed the current evidence on the potential impacts of school-related factors or school-based interventions on student mental health in recent 5 years based on the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and PsycExtra databases. Results/findings After screening 558 full-texts, this review contained a total of 197 original articles on school education and student mental health. Based on the five key factors (including curriculum, homework and tests, physical activities, interpersonal relationships and after-school activities) identified in student mental development according to thematic analyses, a multi-component school educational model integrating academic, social and physical factors was proposed so as to conceptualize the five school-based dimensions for K-12 students to promote student mental health development. Conclusions The lessons learned from previous studies indicate that developing multi-component school strategies to promote student mental health remains a major challenge. This review may help establish appropriate school educational models and call for a greater emphasis on advancement of student mental health in the K-12 school context among different nations or societies.

A network analysis of subjective well-being in Chinese high school students

Abstract:Abstract Background The psychological situation of high school students during adolescence is not promising, and the most obvious manifestation is the lack of subjective well-being (SWB). This network analysis presents a model of the interaction and correlation between different items of SWB, identifying the most central items for high school students. Methods Through offline and online surveys, 4,378 questionnaires were sent out and finally 4,282 Chinese high school students were available. The response rate was 97.807%. The study used the eLASSO method to estimate the network structure and centrality measures. This algorithm used the EBIC to select the best neighbor factor for each node. Results The average age for high school students was 16.320 years old and the average SWB score was 76.680. The distribution of SWB between male and female students was significant different ( P < 0.001). S8 (Have you been anxious, worried, or upset) was the node with the highest strength and expected influence. The network structure and centrality remained stable after discarding 75% of the sample at random. Except for S15 (How concerned or worried about your health have you been), all nodes were positively correlated with each other ( P < 0.01). The network structure of SWB was similar for female and male students (network strength: 8.482 for male participants; 8.323 for female participants; P = 0.159), as well as for rural and urban students (network strength: 8.500 for rural students; 8.315 for urban students; P = 0.140). Conclusion Targeting S8 (Have you been anxious, worried, or upset) as a potential intervention target may increase high school students’ SWB effectively.

Perceived teacher support, student engagement, and academic achievement: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Guided by the self-system process model, the aim of this study was to unravel the relationship between students’ perceived teacher support and academic achievement as well as to address the role of student engagement, using a meta-analytic approach. Based on 71 empirical articles, we found that there was a small to medium correlation between perceived teacher support and achievement (r = 0.16), moderated by grade level, dimensions of teacher support, and measures of academic achievement. Perceived teacher support had the greatest impact on achievement among upper-secondary students, while also had a larger influence on student course grades than standardised test scores. Meanwhile, perceived emotional support had a larger effect size than autonomy or academic support on student achievement. In terms of mediating analysis, both general student engagement and its sub-types (behavioural, cognitive, and emotional engagement) partially mediated the relation between perceived teacher support and student achievement.

Abstract:BackgroundThere is growing interest in the role that schools can play in promoting student health. The aim of this study was to describe the coverage of school health monitoring systems for infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and school physical environments in China, and to explore differences by geography, regional wealth, and school type.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed using data from 2428 schools from 17 provinces in China in 2018. Data were collected using a questionnaire administered by the Ministry of Education through its monitoring system, and included infectious diseases (e.g., reporting system for student infectious diseases), non-communicable diseases (e.g., regular student health examinations), and school physical environments (e.g., monitoring of classroom light, microclimate and drinking water).FindingsOverall, the coverage rate of full school health monitoring systems was 16·6%. The coverage rates of school health monitoring systems for infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and school physical environments were 71·2%, 68·5%, and 24·9%, respectively. Coverage was higher in schools from urban rather than rural areas, in schools from areas with greater wealth, and in senior secondary schools rather than junior secondary and primary schools.InterpretationSystems for monitoring infectious diseases in school students have been widely implemented in China. Systems for monitoring non-communicable diseases and physical environments need to be strengthened. Relationship between Perceived Teacher Support and Student Engagement in Physical Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Student engagement is an essential indicator of educational quality and an instability behavior influenced by teachers. However, research on how teacher support influences this behavioral outcome in physical education has started late compared to academic settings. Hence, this systematic review aims to examine the empirical literature regarding the relationship between perceived teacher support and student engagement in physical education. This review complied with the PRISMA statement and ultimately found 11 eligible studies through the literature utilizing several databases, namely, Web of Science, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, ERIC, and SPORTDiscus. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between perceived teacher support and multiple dimensions of student engagement in physical education, especially in behavioral and emotional engagement. Mediating effects were found in five studies, and autonomous motivation and psychological need satisfaction were the crucial mediators. Teacher support plays a vital role in positive student–teacher interactions and students demonstrate enhanced engagement in physical education learning when teachers provide autonomy, competence, and emotional support. This study has great significance for developing instructional strategies to improve the sustainability of student engagement in physical education and also provides insight for researchers exploring options for optimizing motivational teaching styles to promote the development of sustainable teaching practices.

Abstract:Background: With the advances in society and in response to changing times, college students have had to face multiple challenges. These challenges frequently affect the mental health of college students, leading to significant consequences for their social lives, personal well-being, and academic achievements, thereby attracting extensive societal attention. Therefore, examining the current status of research topics related to the mental health of college students can assist academia in dissecting the influencing factors and seeking solutions at their source or through early intervention. This can contribute to a better understanding of and effectively address this challenge. Method: CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 1609 journal articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database over the past two decades (2000-2022), which helped identify the current state of research and hot topics in the field based on development trends. Furthermore, this study analyzes and discusses the core authors, high-productivity countries and organizations, key journals, and keyword clustering in this field. This study clarifies the current research landscape, analyzes evolving trends based on developmental trajectories, and identifies forefront research hotspots. This study provides scholars with reference research directions and ideas for conducting subsequent studies. Results: Since the beginning of the 21st century, research on college students' mental health has increased, especially in the past three years, and due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and online distance learning, the number of publications has increased rapidly. With the increase in attention and publication volume, the countries and organizations contributing papers as well as core journals have all started to take shape. Cluster and evolution analyses found that several stable research topics have been formed in this research field, and many new and diverse topics are continuously emerging with time. Conclusion: and prospect: The findings prove that the field of college students' mental health has begun to take shape, gradually shifting from conceptual research to the implementation of specific interventions. However, whether specific interventions are effective and how effective they are require further investigation.
The effect of teacher support on primary school students’ reading engagement: the mediating role of reading interest and chinese academic self-concept

Abstract:The subjects of this research were 776 pupils from grade three to grade six in Shandong Province, China. This study examined the influence of teacher support on students’ reading engagement, and the mediating variables between those two factors, as measured by the perception of teachers’ support scale, reading engagement scale, reading interest scale and Chinese academic self-concept scale. Results showed that the reading engagement of primary school students who lived in urban areas was significantly greater than that of students in rural areas. Moreover, teacher support positively influenced primary school students’ reading engagement, and reading interest had a mediating effect on teacher support and reading engagement, whereas the Chinese academic self-concept did not mediate such relations. However, Chinese academic self-concept completely mediated the relationship between teacher support and reading interest, such that there was a specific sequential effect between teacher support and reading engagement that formed an intermediating chain.

Abstract:Introduction: Resilience plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic accomplishments, psychological well-being, and future prospects of high school students. Despite its significance, there is a notable dearth of studies examining the current state and determinants of resilience among high school students in China. Methods: This research addresses this gap by assessing and exploring levels of resilience and their interconnections across four key domains—individual, family, school, and community—among Chinese high school students. The study also investigates variations in resilience based on factors such as gender, geographical location, and grade levels. A total of 667 high school students participated in the study, responding to four resilience scales. Results: Chinese high school students exhibited generally low levels of resilience, with family resilience ranking the highest and community resilience the lowest. The study revealed that resilience is positively influenced by resilience levels in school, family, and community settings. Consequently, strategies aimed at fortifying resilience should prioritize interventions in familial, educational, and communal environments. Discussion: Moreover, the research findings indicate noteworthy disparities in resilience among high school students based on gender, urban-rural divide, and grade levels. Female, urban, and lower-grade students displayed higher resilience compared to their male, rural, and higher-grade counterparts. This highlights the importance of focusing on resilience-building measures tailored to male, rural, and higher-grade high school students, given their increased likelihood of facing significant challenges and stressors in both academic and personal spheres. Conclusion: This study contributes to the broader understanding of resilience by investigating the correlations between individual, family, school, and community resilience among Chinese high school students. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to enhance resilience, particularly in specific demographic groups, thereby advancing the efficacy of resilience-building techniques in high school settings.
