What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This story explores how to present historical tragedies without violating the dignity of historical victims. The protagonist, Aleksandre, is a historical guide who transports tourists through time using a device called "Dial". They witness the interrogation and torture of a woman named Ekaterina during the Soviet era. Although Aleksandre initially believes he is preserving history, he realizes that the commodification and entertainment of suffering by tourists distort history. He tries to restore some human dignity while also experiencing his own feelings of powerlessness. In the story, Jules, as a tourist, demonstrates indifference or even excitement towards historical tragedies, prompting Aleksandre to reflect on his responsibilities. He violates the rules to go back in time and discovers moments of happiness in Ekaterina's life. He commemorates her with song and snowflakes as a way to resist the trend of turning historical pain into entertainment. Author Yelena Crane is inspired by the Russo-Ukrainian War and the history of Soviet concentration camps. She warns against commercializing or using historical tragedies solely for sensory stimulation when telling stories. She hopes that this story will provoke thoughts on how to truly learn from historical mistakes while respecting the victims of history.
