Abstract:Background Simulation-based medical education has been widely used in medical skills training; however, the effectiveness and long-term outcome of simulation-based training in thoracentesis requires further investigation. The purpose of this study was to assess the learning curve of simulation-based thoracentesis training, study skills retention and transfer of knowledge to a clinical setting following simulation-based education intervention in thoracentesis procedures. Methods Fifty-two medical students were enrolled in this study. Each participant performed five supervised trials on the simulator. Participant's performance was assessed by performance score (PS), procedure time (PT), and participant's confidence (PC). Learning curves for each variable were generated. Long-term outcome of the training was measured by the retesting and clinical performance evaluation 6 months and 1 year, respectively, after initial training on the simulator. Results Significant improvements in PS, PT, and PC were noted among the first 3 to 4 test trials (p < 0.05). A plateau for PS, PT, and PC in the learning curves occurred in trial 4. Retesting 6 months after training yielded similar scores to trial 5 (p > 0.05). Clinical competency in thoracentesis was improved in participants who received simulation training relative to that of first year medical residents without such experience (p < 0.05). Conclusions This study demonstrates that simulation-based thoracentesis training can significantly improve an individual's performance. The saturation of learning from the simulator can be achieved after four practice sessions. Simulation-based training can assist in long-term retention of skills and can be partially transferred to clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: The need for developing healthcare professional students' peer teaching skills is widely acknowledged, and a number of discipline-based peer teacher training programs have been previously reported. However, a consensus on what a student peer teaching skills program across the health professions should entail, and the associated benefits and challenges, has not been previously described. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the design and implementation of an interprofessional Peer Teacher Training (PTT) program, and explore outcomes and participant perceptions, using Experience-Based Learning (ExBL) theory. Methods: In 2016, an interprofessional team of academics from across three healthcare faculties: Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, developed and implemented a six module, flipped learning, interprofessional PTT program. Pre- and post questionnaires, using a Likert scale of 1-5, as well as open ended questions, were distributed to students. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. Results: Ninety senior students from across the three faculties participated. Eighty nine percent of participants completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire. Students felt the required pre-class preparation, including online pre-reading, discussion board, videos, and teaching activities enhanced their face-to-face learning experience. In class, students valued the small-group activities, and the opportunities to practice their teaching skills with provision of feedback. Students reported increased confidence to plan and deliver peer teaching activities, and an increased awareness of the roles and responsibilities of health professionals outside of their own discipline, and use of different terminology and communication methods. Students' suggestions for improving the PTT, included; less large group teaching; more online delivery of theory; and inclusion of a wider range of health professional disciplines. Conclusion: The PTT program provided a theoretically informed framework where students could develop and practice their teaching skills, helping to shape students' professional values as they assume peer teaching responsibilities and move towards healthcare practice. The flipped learning, interprofessional format was successful in developing students' skills, competence and confidence in teaching, assessment, communication and feedback. Importantly, participation increased students' awareness and understanding of the various roles of health professionals.

Abstract:Introduction Oral presentation and public speaking skills are poorly emphasised in the medical school curriculum. The student grand round was created to tackle this deficiency by changing the way in which students are taught, from traditional lecture-based learning to interactive small-group peer-to-peer teaching. This approach encourages students to become responsible for their own learning, develop their public speaking and teaching skills, as well as identify and address gaps in their knowledge. Aims The primary aims of this study were to determine the understanding of students before and after peer teaching, including retention of concepts via quiz scores and confidence of students in giving SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) handovers. The secondary aim is to determine the place of student-led grand round teaching in the medical curriculum as a means of developing teaching skills and encouraging active learning. Methods A cohort of 21 third-year medical students from Leicester University attended a weekly peer teaching programme where students presented a case they had encountered during their clinical attachment. Peer teachers were required to research some background and pathophysiology regarding the topic and teach in an interactive manner and create discussion regarding the topic. The students then summarised the case and practised the skill of concise handovers using the SBAR format. Knowledge and understanding were assessed with an interactive quiz, and feedback via a survey was gathered before and after sessions. Each student engaged in case discussion and received input from a specialty registrar regarding their presentation skills, case knowledge, and SBAR handover. Results Individual and combined session analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in scores across understanding the topic and confidence in SBAR. Student recommendation for the session cumulatively was significant (p=0.02); however, comparison of medical student recommendations of individual sessions did not yield statistically significant results. There was a significant improvement in the overall quiz score (p=0.045), and average scores improved from 51% to 70% (p=0.043). There was a significant increase in the mean quiz result after the first two sessions (28-55% (p=0.002) and 56-85% (p=0.0001), respectively). Summary The student grand round is a promising teaching initiative that capitalises on peer teaching, a valuable learning theory that centres around students taking on the role of teachers to instruct their peers. Results from this study have shown that this method of collaborative teaching is effective in improving the understanding of medical topics, increases confidence in public speaking and precise handover skills, and therefore better prepares medical students for their career as future clinicians.

Abstract:Background: Failures of teamwork and interpersonal communication have been cited as a major patient safety issue. Although healthcare is increasingly being provided in interdisciplinary teams, medical school curricula have traditionally not explicitly included the specific knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors required to function effectively as part of such teams. Methods: As part of a new "Foundations" core course for beginning medical students that provided a two-week introduction to the most important themes in modern healthcare, a multidisciplinary team, in collaboration with the Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment, was asked to create an experiential introduction to teamwork and interpersonal communication. We designed and implemented a novel, all-day course to teach second-week medical students basic teamwork and interpersonal principles and skills using immersive simulation methods. Students' anonymous comprehensive course evaluations were collected at the end of the day. Through four years of iterative refinement based on students' course evaluations, faculty reflection, and debriefing, the course changed and matured. Results: Four hundred twenty evaluations were collected. Course evaluations were positive with almost all questions having means and medians greater than 5 out of 7 across all 4 years. Sequential year comparisons were of greatest interest for examining the effects of year-to-year curricular improvements. Differences were not detected among any of the course evaluation questions between 2007 and 2008 except that more students in 2008 felt that the course further developed their "Decision Making Abilities" (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.07-2.67). With extensive changes to the syllabus and debriefer selection/assignment, concomitant improvements were observed in these aspects between 2008 and 2009 (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.28-3.50). Substantive improvements in specific exercises also yielded significant improvements in the evaluations of those exercises. Conclusions: This curriculum could be valuable to other medical schools seeking to inculcate teamwork foundations in their medical school's preclinical curricula. Moreover, this curriculum can be used to facilitate teamwork principles important to inter-disciplinary, as well as uni-disciplinary, collaboration.

Abstract:Introduction Cardiology training requires trainees to manage clinical duties whilst developing practical skills. Changes to the UK curriculum have resulted in reduced time available for procedural teaching. Pericardiocentesis is one of many required competencies. The Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board cardiology curriculum cites the importance of simulation-based education to teach procedures. Procedural training encompasses the development of clinical reasoning alongside motor skills. Gange (1962) and Carless (2010) emphasized the importance of expert-guided practice, interactive teaching, and instant feedback in motor skills teaching to maximize the educational experience. Aim Develop a simulation teaching programme to enhance trainees' confidence and competency in pericardiocentesis. Procedures form part of a summative Direct Observation of Procedural Skills, enabling trainees to learn in a safe environment and use as evidence at their Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP). Method We developed a pilot programme for pericardiocentesis facilitated through high-fidelity equipment between February 2023 and February 2024. Participants were recruited through medical education departments. The sessions were delivered on a one-to-one basis by a cardiology consultant to facilitate discussion and interactivity. The teaching involved a core knowledge presentation, discussion of trainee experiences, case studies as examples, including review of echocardiography features. This was followed by clinical skills teaching of pericardiocentesis, utilizing a model, and transthoracic echocardiography. Trainees were sent anonymous feedback forms after the session. Results 46 cardiology registrars participated; 48% were within their first few years of training. 87% reported difficulty in practicing this skill in clinical practice due to: lack of exposure, other clinical responsibilities taking priority, and the need for consultant-delivered care on patients requiring an urgent or emergency procedure. Mean trainee confidence before teaching was 3.24 out of 5 (SD = 1.14), with a significant improvement to 4.48 (SD = 0.59 p<0.001). 52% improved in confidence by 1 unit and, 31% improved in confidence by 2 or more units. Trainees reported the following themes regarding the session: knowledgeable trainer, high fidelity equipment, instant feedback to predict, prevent, and overcome challenges, and a multi-modal approach to teaching, incorporating presentation and discussion on pericardial effusion, tamponade, and drainage. Conclusion Our programme offers a unique multi-modal teaching approach, with dedicated time with an expert. We supported the progress of 46 trainees and enhanced their training competencies. We aim to expand the programme to incorporate more procedures in line with growing curriculum requirements. Tracking trainee progress until ARCP outcomes will reveal the impact of simulation teaching on their experience and professional development.

Abstract:Introduction: Effective team leadership is linked to better teamwork, which in turn is believed to improve patientcare. Simulation-based training provides a mechanism to develop effective leadership behaviors. Traditionally, healthcare curricula have included leadership as a small component of broader teamwork training, with very few examples of leadership-focused curricula. The objective of this work is to describe a novel simulation-basedteam leadership curriculum that easily adapts to individual learners.Methods: We created a simulation-based team leadership training for trauma team leaders in graduatemedical education. Participants included second- and third-year emergency medicine and surgery residents. Training consisted of a single, four-hour session and included facilitated discussion of trauma leadership skills,a brief didactic session integrating leadership behaviors into Advanced Trauma Life Support®, and a seriesof simulations and debriefing sessions. The simulations contained adaptable components that facilitated individualized learning while delivering set curricular content. A survey evaluation was administered 7-24 months following the training to assess self-reported implementation of trained material.Results: A total of 36 residents participated in the training and 23 (64%) responded to the survey. The majority of respondents (n = 22, 96%) felt the training was a valuable component of their residency education and allrespondents reported ongoing use of at least one behavior learned during the training. The most commonly cited skills for ongoing use included the pre-arrival brief (n = 21, 91%) and prioritization (n = 21, 91%).Conclusion: We delivered a leadership-focused, simulation-based training that 1) adapted to learners'individual needs, and 2) was perceived to impact practice up to 24 months post-training. More work is needed tounderstand the impact of this training on learner knowledge and behavior, as well as patient outcomes.

Abstract:The ability to team up and safely work in any kind of healthcare team is a critical asset and should be taught early on in medical education. Medical students should be given the chance to "walk the talk" of teamwork by training and reflecting in teams. Our goal was to design, implement and evaluate the feasibility of a simulation-based teamwork training (TeamSIM) for undergraduate medical students that puts generic teamwork skills centerstage. We designed TeamSIM to include 12 learning objectives. For this pre-post, mixed-methods feasibility study, third-year medical students, organized in teams of 11-12 students, participated and observed each other in eight simulations of different clinical situation with varying degrees of complexity (e.g., deteriorating patient in ward; trauma; resuscitation). Guided by an interprofessional clinical faculty with simulation-based instructor training, student teams reflected on their shared experience in structured team debriefings. Using published instruments, we measured (a) students' reactions to TeamSIM and their perceptions of psychological safety via self-report, (b) their ongoing reflections via experience sampling, and (c) their teamwork skills via behavior observation. Ninety four students participated. They reported positive reactions to TeamSIM (M = 5.23, SD = 0.5). Their mean initial reported level of psychological safety was M = 3.8 (SD = 0.4) which rose to M = 4.3 (SD = 0.5) toward the end of the course [T(21) = -2.8, 95% CI -0.78 to-0.12, p = 0.011 (two-tailed)]. We obtained n = 314 headline reflections from the students and n = 95 from the faculty. For the students, the most frequent theme assigned to their headlines involved the concepts taught in the course such as "10 s for 10 min." For the faculty, the most frequent theme assigned to their headlines were reflections on how their simulation session worked for the students. The faculty rated students' teamwork skills higher after the last compared to the first debriefing. Undergraduate medical students can learn crucial teamwork skills in simulations supported by an experienced faculty and with a high degree of psychological safety. Both students and faculty appreciate the learning possibilities of simulation. At the same time, this learning can be challenging, intense and overwhelming. It takes a team to teach teamwork.

Abstract:Hepatic cholesterogenesis was studied in pair-fed and pyridoxine-deficient rats as well as in rat liver homogenate systems. Crossover of various subcellular components from pair-fed homogenates into pyridoxine-deficient homogenate systems and vice versa was also done.On 8 weeks of pyridoxine deficiency, acetate-14C incorporation rates into liver cholesterol increased by a factor of approximately 10. The same phenomenon was observed with the total liver homogenate systems.Pyridoxine deficiency does not appear to affect HMG-CoA reductase activity of pyridoxine-deficient liver microsomes sufficiently to explain the rapid acetate-1-14C incorporation rates in this same tissue. The activating system(s) responsible for the 10-fold increase in acetate-14C incorporation rates into pyridoxine-deficient rat liver cholesterol appears to be located in the high-speed supernatant fraction. Peer teacher training for health professional students: a systematic review of formal programs

Abstract:BackgroundSkills in peer teaching, assessment and feedback are documented internationally as required graduate attributes for health professional students, placing emphasis on universities to prepare health professional graduates with teaching skills. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the rational, design, content and evaluation of student peer teacher training skills programs across the health professions.MethodsIn October 2017, a search was conducted of five databases (Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL, ERIC and Cochrane Collection) using combinations of key search terms: ‘Student as teacher’, ‘near-peer teaching’, ‘student teacher’, ‘peer teacher’, ‘peer-to-peer’, ‘undergraduate’, ‘medical education’, ‘curriculum’, ‘program’, ‘training’, ‘allied health’, ‘health science’, ‘pharmacy’, ‘nurse’, and ‘medicine’, with results restricted to articles published in English within the decade. Articles were excluded if they were not original research, focused on a teaching approach other than peer assisted learning or teaching, did not adequately describe a student teacher training component of at least 3 hrs duration, or addressed only clinical skills training and not teaching skills training.ResultsThe two authors independently assessed 42 full-text articles for eligibility, with 19 articles satisfying criteria for inclusion. Dominating results were uni-disciplinary, faculty-led, non-mandated programs, targeting participants in senior years of training. Medicine was the dominant profession, with an obvious underrepresentation of the other health professions. Common program content included the foundations of education theory, teaching methods and techniques, and providing feedback. Summary and comparison of program design is restricted by gaps and inconsistencies in reporting, while the evaluation of programs remains largely subjective.ConclusionsTeaching is increasingly recognised as a core professional skill across the health workforce, with expectations to teach peers and colleagues, within and across professional disciplines, as well as to educate patients. Students, faculty and institutes may benefit from training programs being designed for implementation in any health profession; and further to this, implemented within an interprofessionally context. Consistent reporting of teacher training programs, and objective methods of evaluation would enable more in-depth investigation.

Peer Coaching as a Faculty Development Tool: A Mixed Methods Evaluation

Abstract:ABSTRACT Background In the era of competency-based assessment, medical education faculty are frequently challenged to develop unique teaching approaches. One method to address faculty development needs in a real-time clinical learning environment is peer coaching. Objective We implemented and evaluated a faculty development program involving peer observation and feedback for attending physicians. Methods Hospital internal medicine faculty assigned to a teaching service were recruited for the study. Participants voluntarily agreed to observe and be observed by a peer attending physician during a 2-week block of teaching rounds. When serving in the coaching role, faculty were asked to observe 4 separate occasions using an observation tool based on the Stanford Faculty Development Program framework to guide feedback. An outside consultant facilitated a focus group and completed a qualitative content analysis to categorize all participants' experiences during the faculty development activity. Results Of the 22 eligible faculty, 14 (64%) agreed to participate by committing to 6 to 8 hours observing another faculty member during rounds, 2 feedback sessions, and 90 minutes to provide program feedback during a focus group. The analysis of the focus group revealed favorable reactions to the faculty development program, including (1) observed attending awareness of unrecognized habits; (2) personalized teaching tips for the observed attending to improve teaching quality based on individual style/preferences; and (3) exposure to new teaching techniques. Conclusions An inpatient-based peer-coaching faculty development program was acceptable and feasible for a majority of faculty and may improve individual teaching effectiveness among conventionally trained physicians.

Owning the Trauma Bay: Teaching Trauma Resuscitation to Emergency Medicine Residents and Nurses through In-situ Simulation

Abstract:Audience: The following two cases were designed to address learning objectives specific to interns, junior residents, and senior residents in emergency medicine, as well as trauma-certified emergency nurses. Introduction: Traumatic and unintentional injuries account for 5.8 million deaths across the globe each year, with a high proportion of those deaths occurring within the initial hour from the time of injury. This "golden hour" begins in the pre-hospital setting yet is predominantly spent in the emergency department (ED).1 Being able to effectively manage the multidisciplinary team required to care for trauma patients is crucial to providing timely and appropriate care. In-situ simulation, where the learning case is moved out of the simulation lab and into the typical workplace, has emerged as a powerful training tool for improving care-systems and team dynamics.2,3 Multiple specialties have shown in-situ simulation to be an effective strategy to teach both educational content as well as critical procedural and communication skills.4,5 In-situ simulation training has also been applied with similar success to trauma management, allowing for the simultaneous education of different learners with different roles in trauma resuscitations.6,7 We present two in-situ simulation cases with specific educational objectives and feedback mechanisms that allow for easy implementation of a cost-effective approach to training multidisciplinary emergency medicine providers in trauma management.Educational Objectives: The core objectives of these simulations center on effective teamwork and communication during trauma resuscitation of a critically ill patient. Both cases are designed to include maneuvers that require coordinating team members' actions during a stressful situation such as rolling a vomiting patient with a head injury and applying a binder to an unstable pelvic fracture. While the cases are largely focused on improving communication, salient learning points on emergent management of intracranial hemorrhage and unstable pelvic fractures are highlighted during the encounter. In addition, this simulation module allowed for the practice of graduated level of responsibilities amongst residents in the trauma bay. Educational methods: Two in-situ simulation cases were run with the same group of learners using standardized patient actors as patients and functional medical equipment in actual rooms in the emergency department to recreate a realistic experience. These groups were composed of emergency medicine residents with at least one intern, one junior resident, and one senior resident in each group as well as a bedside nurse, documenting nurse, and simulation instructor. Each case was followed by a group debriefing session using multiple sources of feedback. Standardized patients, bedside nursing, and simulation instructors were all incorporated into the feedback and debriefing process. Research methods: Pre- and post-simulation surveys were given to participants to assess their confidence in participating and leading trauma resuscitations. Results: A total of 29 emergency medicine residents completed both our pre- and post-survey. We found that less than half of those surveyed felt comfortable leading trauma resuscitations. After the simulation scenarios, an overwhelming majority agreed that they felt more prepared to run trauma resuscitations as a result of the simulation experience. In their free response comments participants also remarked upon the ability of in-situ simulation to better foster realistic learning opportunities with regards to communication and resuscitation management. Discussion: Based on our survey results, we found that a large portion of our participants did not feel comfortable leading trauma resuscitations. The post-survey and the free-text responses collected during the case scenarios show that our in-situ simulation proved to be an effective way to teach various types of learners new trauma roles and optimize high-stress communication during resuscitations. The use of in-situ simulation provides an effective and easily adapted framework even for those outside of academic centers and simulation labs while also offering an opportunity for multidisciplinary growth. Regular incorporation of similar learning opportunities into resident, nursing, and staff education can lead to better communication and teamwork during in-vivo patient encounters. High-Fidelity Bleeding Control Simulation Scenario During Medical Student Orientation Improves Students' Self-Reported Ability to Identify and Treat Life-Threatening Bleeding with 3-year Follow-up

Abstract:Objective: Increasingly, medical schools integrate clinical skills into early didactic coursework. The Stop the Bleed® Campaign emphasizes prehospital hemorrhage control to reduce preventable deaths; however, this course overlooks team interactions. We assessed the impact of high-fidelity simulation during medical student orientation on identification and treatment of life-threatening hemorrhage in a team setting. Design: In this mixed method, prospective pre-, post-, and follow-up survey analysis assessing student knowledge and attitudes, student teams encountered a standardized patient in a prehospital environment with pulsatile bleeding from an extremity wound. Individual students completed surveys assessing previous experience, willingness and ability to assist bleeding person(s), and knowledge and attitudes about tourniquets. Postscenario, faculty preceptors made qualitative observations on teamwork. Setting: Medical student orientation at a tertiary care academic medical center with long-term follow-up. Participants: Medical students (N = 150). Results: Ninety students (60%) completed both pre- and postsimulation questionnaires. Sixteen (17%) students had previous tourniquet training experience although none had applied a tourniquet outside of training. Postsimulation, students reported increased likelihood of providing treatment until additional help arrived (p = 0.035), improved ability to identify life-threatening hemorrhage (p < 0.001), and more favorable opinions about tourniquet use (p < 0.001) and potential for limb-salvage (p = 0.018). Long-term follow-up respondents (n = 34, 23%) reported increased ability to identify life-threatening hemorrhage (p = 0.010) and universal willingness to intervene until additional help arrived. Follow-up survey responses elicited themes in hemorrhage control including recognition of the importance of continuous pressure, appropriate use of tourniquets, a desire for repeated team training, and the recognition of clerkship rotations as an optimal setting for skill reinforcement. Preceptors noted variable team responses but uniformly endorsed the exercise. Conclusions: High-fidelity bleeding simulation during medical student orientation improved students' knowledge and attitudes about treating life-threatening hemorrhage and served as an introduction to team-based emergency care. Future studies should further explore team training and hemorrhage control education.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Teaching cardiac ultrasound (CU) image acquisition requires hands-on practice under qualified instructors supervision. We assessed the efficacy of teaching medical students by their previously trained classmates (teaching assistants [TAs]) compared to teaching by expert trainers (cardiologists or diagnostic medical sonographers.METHODS: Sixty-six students received 8-hour CU training: 4-hour lectures on ultrasound anatomy and imaging techniques of 6 main CU views (parasternal long [PLAV] and short axis [PSAV]; apical 4-chamber [4ch], 2-chamber [2ch], and 3-chamber [3ch]; and sub costal [SC]) followed by 4 hours of hands-on exercise in groups of ≤5 students under direct supervision of a TA (group A: 44 students) or a qualified trainer (group B: 22 students). Students' proficiency was evaluated on a 6-minute test in which they were required to demonstrate 32 predetermined anatomic landmarks spread across the 6 views and ranked on a 0-100 scale according to a predetermined key.RESULTS: The 6-minute test final grade displayed superiority of group A over group B (54±17 vs. 39±21, respectively [p = 0.001]). This trend was continuous across all 6 main views: PLAV (69±18 vs. 54±23, respectively), PSAV (65±33 vs. 41±32, respectively), 4ch (57±19 vs. 43±26, respectively), 2ch (37±29 vs. 33±27, respectively), 3ch (48±23 vs. 35±25, respectively), and SC (36±27 vs. 24±28, respectively).CONCLUSIONS: Teaching medical students CU imaging acquisition by qualified classmates is feasible. Moreover, students instructors were superior to senior instructors when comparing their students' capabilities in a practical test. Replacing experienced instructors with TAs could help medical schools teach ultrasound techniques with minimal dependence on highly qualified trainers.

Implementing peer tutoring in a graduate medical education programme

Abstract:Background: In modern times, peer tutoring methods have been explored in health care education for over 30 years. In this paper, we report our experience of implementing a peer-tutoring approach to Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL) training in the Graduate Entry in Medicine Programme (GEM) at University College Cork. Methods: Eighteen fourth-year medical students were recruited as peer tutors for CSL sessions on physical examination. In order to standardise the process, we developed a training course for peer tutors that comprised two stages. They then ran the practical sessions with junior students, under the watchful eye of medical educators. At the end of the last CSL session, the students were given 10 minutes to reflect individually on the experience, and were asked to complete a feedback form. Results: Twenty-four of the 42 GEM students and six of the seven Senior Tutors (STs) completed and returned their feedback forms. With the caveats of small sample sizes and low response rates, both groups reported that they had both positive and negative experiences of peer tutoring, but that the positive experiences predominated. Conclusion: The overall experience was positive. In terms of the primary thesis of this study, the STs thought that they were well prepared by the teaching staff to take part in these teaching sessions.

Abstract:Introduction: Pediatric trauma resuscitations are low-frequency, high-stakes events that require skilled multidisciplinary teams with strong medical knowledge and communication skills. Methods: This pediatric trauma simulation training session included two cases and formats. The first case was designed in a traditional format and featured a 12-month-old child with inflicted blunt head and abdominal trauma. The second case was organized in successive rounds utilizing the rapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) model and featured an 18-month-old with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest. Educational objectives included effective communication in a multidisciplinary team, timely completion of primary and secondary surveys, awareness of systems and processes related to trauma care, and increasing competency with low-frequency pediatric trauma skills. Necessary equipment included high-fidelity toddler-sized mannequins, chest tube task trainer or applicable mannequin and equipment, intubation equipment and supplies, intraosseous access, and blood products with rapid delivery infusers. This training session was designed for learners in a multidisciplinary team including physician trainees, nurses, and advanced practice providers; adjustments could be made to the team members as desired. Results: Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrated high learner satisfaction and engagement, particularly in the RCDP style of learning. Discussion: Multidisciplinary team practice of pediatric trauma scenarios, particularly utilizing the RCDP simulation model, provides the opportunity to improve teamwork and communication, practice procedural skills, and deepen team members' understanding of and comfort with trauma resuscitations.
