Abstract:Printing ink wastewater from printing facilities is difficult to treat because of its heavy pollutant load (chemical oxygen demand - COD, color and total suspended solids - TSS). In this study undiluted printing ink wastewater with high COD (i.e., 20,000 mgL-1) was treated using a highly efficient, continuous flow electrocoagulation reactor with aluminum electrodes. The parameters investigated were: initial COD concentration (4000, 10,000 and 20,000 mgL-1), current density (21, 42 and 83 mAcm-2), and inlet flow rate (6, 8 and 10 mLmin-1). All parameters showed great efficiency in terms of pollutant removal for diluted printing ink wastewater. For undiluted printing ink wastewater treatment, COD, color, and TSS removal were maximized at 6 mLmin-1 flow rate reaching 82%, 98%, and 85% COD, color, and TSS removal, respectively, by applying the lower tested current density 21 mAcm-2. COD, color and TSS removal increased with increasing current density. For undiluted printing ink wastewater and a flow rate of 8 mLmin-1, COD removal was between 42 and 88%, color reduction between 85 and 99%, and TSS reduction between 83 and 98% when the applied current was increased (from 21 to 83 mAcm-2). Lower pollutant removal was observed at the highest flow rate of 10 mLmin-1 for all current densities tested. Process cost calculations in terms of electrical energy, electrode material consumption and sludge disposal, showed that the use of continuous flow electrocoagulation reactor (with flow rate 6 mLmin-1, and at 21 mAcm-2) is an affordable and effective treatment method for printing ink wastewater streams with very high COD. Sludge characterization showed Al-silicate-rich sludge. Particle sizes increased after treatment and Cu and Ti were detected in the sludge. A post-treatment stage is necessary before discharging effluent into water bodies.

Abstract:Textile wastewaters from alkali reduction, printing and dyeing operations are usually highly basic, turbid and have many COD and color constituents present in high concentrations; therefore, effective pretreatment is required to make them biotreatable. Direct acidification of one such wastewater failed because it resulted in heavy production of colloidal products. Coagulation and flocculation, using 800~1 500 mg/L of MgSO_ 4 and 2 mg/L of a high molecular weight organic flocculant HPAM, and followed by acidification to a pH of <3.0, achieved excellent pretreatment performance; COD, color intensity and turbidity of the wastewater sample were reduced by 92%, 97%, and nearly 100%, respectively.
Comparison of Coagulative Colloidal Microbubbles with Monomeric and Polymeric Inorganic Coagulants for Tertiary Treatment of Distillery Wastewater.

Abstract:The flotation using coagulative colloidal gas aphrons (CCGAs) is of great potential in effectively removing the recalcitrant dissolved organic matter (DOM) and colorants from the bio-chemically treated cassava distillery wastewater. As bubble modifier, the monomeric and polymeric inorganic coagulants need to be studied considering their distinct influence on the surfactant/coagulant complex, the properties of colloidal aphrons as well as the process performance and mechanisms. Such studies help to create robust CCGAs with high flotation potential. In this work, the commonly-used monomeric and polymeric Al(III)- and Fe(III)-coagulants were combined with the cationic surfactant - cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to generate CCGAs. The CCGAs functionalized with Al(III)-coagulants (both monomeric and polymeric ones) were featured as small bubble size, strong stability and high air content. Particularly, the monomeric Al(III)-coagulant (AlCl3 in this work) resulted in low surface tension and high foamability when being mixed with CTAB in the bubble generation solution. Those CCGAs achieved high removal efficiencies of DOM and colorants at low coagulant concentrations. The molecular weight of DOM in effluent was well controlled below 1 kDa by CCGAs. For the flocs obtained from CCGA-flotation, the characteristic Raman band of DOM and colorants showed the layer-by-layer variation of Raman intensity which decreased from the outer layer to the center. In contrast with the conventional coagulation-flotation, the reduction of coagulant dosage by CCGAs was 67% (AlCl3), 25% (polyaluminum chloride), 60% (Fe-2(SO4)(3)) and 40% (polyferric sulfate). The sludge production could then be largely reduced, and meanwhile, the retention time was shortened by 9.5 min. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Printing and dyeing wastewater treated by two-stage bio-treatment plant was further treated by the high-efficiency coagulation precipitation - filtration process with precipitation sludge return.The experimental results show that when the dosage of poly aluminum chloride is 160 mg/L,the average removal rates of COD and TP are 34.6%and 87.9%respectively,and the average effluent TP is 0.3 mg/L.The analysis results of GC-MS and AES-ICP indicate that the coagulation process has good effects on organics and TP removal.

Abstract:Ink-cartridge-washing wastewater had characteristics of high color,high COD concentrations,and low biodegradability.In this study,ink-cartridge-washing wastewater was treated by the combined Fenton-oxidation and flocculation process.The optimal conditions for the Fenton-oxidation treatment were:H2O2 dosage of 2 000 mg.L-1,Fe2+/H2O2 ratio of 0.05,pH of 3,and reaction duration of 120 min.Flocculating the effluent wastewater after the Fenton-oxidation treatment,the optimal conditions were:PAC dosage of 150 mg.L-1 and pH of 8.After treating by the combined Fenton-oxidation and flocculation process,water quality met the national discharging standard;the treated wastewater had TOC concentration of 28 mg.L-1 and color of 10,and the corresponding removal percentages were 92% and 98.7,respectively.
Application of cellulose nanofibers to remove water-based flexographic inks from wastewaters

Abstract:Water-based or flexographic inks in paper and plastic industries are more environmentally favourable than organic solvent-based inks. However, their use also creates new challenges because they remain dissolved in water and alter the recycling process. Conventional deinking technologies such as flotation processes do not effectively remove them. Adsorption, coagulation/flocculation, biological and membrane processes are either expensive or have negative health impacts, making the development of alternative methods necessary. Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are biodegradable, and their structural and mechanical properties are useful for wastewater treatment. TEMPO-oxidised CNF have been evaluated for the decolourisation of wastewaters that contained copper phthalocyanine blue, carbon black and diarlyide yellow pigments. CNF in combination with a cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) has also been tested. Jar-test methodology was used to evaluate the efficiency of the different treatments and cationic/anionic demand, turbidity and ink concentration in waters were measured. Results show that dual-component system for ink removal has a high potential as an alternative bio-based adsorbent for the removal of water-based inks. In addition, experiments varying CNF and cPAM concentrations were performed to optimise the ink-removal process. Ink concentration reductions of 100%, 87.5% and 83.3% were achieved for copper phthalocyanine blue, carbon black and diarlyide yellow pigments, respectively. Flocculation studies carried out show the decolourisation mechanism during the dual-component treatment of wastewaters containing water-based inks.

Abstract:Aiming at treating the printing & dyeing wastewater in the centralized treatment plant of a printing and dyeing industrial park,polyaluminum ferric chloride(PAFC) and polyaluminum ferric chloride sulfate(PAFCS) have been used for pretreatment by flocculation. The effects of chemical dosage,initial pH and temperature on the organism removing efficiency are studied. Flocculation mechanisms are discussed combining with process ζ potential changes. The sludge output of flocculants is studied systematically,and the treatment efficacies of PFS and PAC are compared. The results show that when the temperature is 25 ℃,pH 10.0,and dosage 620 mg/L,the COD removing rates of PAFC and PAFCS reach 52.6% and 43.6%,respectively,and sludge output coefficients are 1.33 g/g and 0.88 g/g,respectively. Compared with conventional flocculants PAC,PFS,etc.,polyaluminum ferric flocculant is characterized by high treatment efficacy,low dosage consumption and low sludge output. It can be popularized and applied to printing and dyeing wastewater treatment engineering.
Application of Composite Pre-Polymerized Coagulants for the Treatment of High-Strength Industrial Wastewaters

Abstract:The aim of this study was the investigation of alternative pre-polymerized coagulants for the treatment of high-strength industrial wastewaters, such as those created by tanneries, or by yeast production industries. The novel inorganic composite coagulant examined in this study (as well as variations of it) was denoted as PSiFAC1.5-10-15. The contribution of a typical polyelectrolyte to improve the effectiveness of the coagulation/flocculation (C/F) process was additionally studied, either by adding it separately (i.e., as a flocculant aid) or by co-polymerizing it within the structure of inorganic coagulant (denoted as PAPEFAC1.5-10-15). It was found that the PSiFAC1.5:10:15 coagulant, either with or without the addition of polyelectrolyte, can provide better efficiency for the C/F process than the conventional coagulants. For example, the addition of 80 mg Al/L in yeast production wastewater samples resulted in a 56% reduction of COD, 40% of turbidity, and 43% of phosphates, regarding the pre-treated anaerobically wastewater samples and reduced by an extra 22%, 14%, and 38% for the pre-treated anaerobically plus aerobically wastewater samples, respectively. The residual aluminum concentration in the treated wastewaters was found to be below the legislation limit of 200 μg Al/L. The characterization of coagulants showed the relatively higher Al13 content of 51% and 43% for the cases of PSiFAC1.5-10-15 and PAPEFAC1.5-10-15, respectively, accompanied by the high zeta-potential measurements (50.5 and 39.5 mV).

Abstract:Dyeing wastewater biological effluent needs advanced treatment to meet the reuse standards.In this study,both an organic-inorganic compound flocculant with reaction performance and an inorganic compound flocculant with flocculation and oxidation performance were prepared and screened for advanced treatment on dyeing wastewater biological effluent with cycled flocs use.Comparing with traditional flocculation,the water chroma can be reduced to 10-fold and the flocculant dosage and flocculation sludge production reduced by 50%,and chemical oxygen demand(CODcr)removal efficiency increased by 5%—10%,and flocs recycled up to 10 times.Mixed with powdered activated carbon,the organic-inorganic compound flocculants can reduce another 50% of flocculant dosage and flocculation sludge production by effective cycle of 15 times.

Abstract:In this work, electrocoagulation–flotation (ECF) following sedimentation was applied as a printing and packaging wastewater treatment using four Al electrodes with a parallel monopolar configuration. A sedimentation process was applied after the ECF as a post-treatment phase to remove large pollutants. The simultaneous efficacy of the operating parameters initial color content (1,843.44–12,156.56 ADMI), initial pH (3.56–10.44), current density (6.02–22.18 mA/cm2), and treatment time (5.62–74.38 min) on color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were evaluated alongside processing costs. Response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD) optimized these key parameters to achieve the highest removal efficiencies and lowest operating costs. Based on the results analyzed by RSM-CCD, using initial color content of 5,576.38 ADMI, initial pH of 7.29, the current density of 18.49 mA/cm2, and treatment time of 59.76 min as optimum operational conditions can result in 97.8% and 92.1% for color and COD removal efficiencies, respectively. At these optimum conditions, operating costs (OPCs), including electrodes material and energy consumption, were 0.07 US$/(kg color removed) and 0.4 US$/(kg COD removed). The results confirm ECF-sedimentation as a promising and costeffective tool for the treatment of printing and packaging wastewater.

Abstract:Hydrolytic acidification-bio-contact oxidation-flocculation sedimentation process has been used for treating printing and dyeing wastewater.When the concentrations of COD,BOD5 and SS are ranged from 640-1 230, 160-382,164-322 mg/L,respectively,and the effluent concentrations of which are 64-92,9-24,34-60 mg/L,respectively.The effluent result reaches the first grade Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard(GB 8978—1996).Its optimal HRT is 9 h.When the volumetric loading rate is 6 kg/(m3·d),the COD removing effect is better.The wastewater treatment cost is CNY 1.28/m3,having obvious economic benefit.

Abstract:Experimental research for wastewater processing has been carried out on the activated dye wastewater from cotton-printing and dyeing by using a chemical coagulation method with MgSO4 as coagulation agent and anion polyacrylamide as coagulant aid. It shows that the pH is of the substantial effect on decolorization. When the pH is greater than 12.0,decolorization rate approaches stable. Decolorization and COD removal rate all increase with the increase of MgSO4 addition. The floc settling time becomes shorter by adding a little anion polyacrylamide. It has been confirmed that the decolorization rate is above 90%,COD removal rate is greater than 80%. Clearly, the combined processing method is suitable for the activated dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The wastewater from white card paper production was treated with inclined screen-flocculation sedimentation-A/O process.The results showed that the average removal percentage of COD_ Cr and SS reached 97.9% and 99.1%,respectively.The effluent could meet the national standard steadily.When the inclined screen was adopted to reclaim waste fiber in wastewater and the superficial loading rate was set at 5～ 12 m~3/(m~2·h), the removal percentage of COD_ Cr and SS reached 52.8% and 53.7%, separately.The benefit from fiber reclamation is equal to 33 yuan per ton of paper, which is 2.5% of the total cost of paper.Recycle of the excessive activated sludge could cut down the chemical dosage,thus saving 25% of total running cost and alleviating secondary pollution.

Abstract:In this work, different alternatives to conventional tertiary treatment of pulp and paper (P&P) wastewater (WW), i.e., physicochemical coagulation-flocculation, were investigated to enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of industrial wastewater treatment. In particular, following a preliminary characterization of secondary effluents, cloth filtration and adsorption were studied, the former by pilot-scale tests, while the latter at laboratory scale. An economic analysis was finally accomplished to verify the full-scale applicability of the most promising technologies. Cloth filtration showed excellent total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiency (mean 81% removal) but a very limited influence on chemical oxygen demand (COD) (mean 10% removal) due to the prevalence of soluble COD on particulate COD. Adsorption, instead, led to a good COD removal efficiency (50% abatement at powdered activated carbon—PAC—dosage of 400 mg/L). The economic analysis proved that adsorption would be convenient only if a local low-cost (100 €/ton) adsorbent supply chain was established. Ultrafiltration was considered as well as a potential alternative: its huge capital cost (19 M€) could be recovered in a relatively short timeframe (pay-back time of 4.7 years) if the ultrafiltrated effluent could be sold to local industries.

Abstract:Ink wastewater is hazardous because it contains oil and refractory pollutants, with high Chroma and turbidity. There are many aromatic compounds in the wastewater, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and phthalocyanines, azos, and nitroso, which make high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen content. The refractory pollutants are always encapsulated in diverse oil-water systems. Usually a massive degreaser has to be used to destroy the dispersant oil forms under preferred alkaline condition, and advanced oxidation is used for good removal of refractory pollutants under preferred acid condition, which commonly lead to a bad coagulation and sedimentation as a result. In this study, the nano-Fe3O4 (MNPs) activated sodium persulfate (SPS) has been testified to enhance degrease with efficient coagulation and sedimentation. The results showed that the removal of oil, COD, ammonia nitrogen, Chroma and turbidity reached respectively 96.40%, 98.35%, 88.00%, 99.70% and 98.22%, within 40–50 min. The mechanism shows that the catalytic oxidation significantly decreased the Zeta potential of the colloidal particles in the wastewater, which destroyed the steady-state of the colloid and enhanced the effect of coagulation sedimentation. Importantly, the combination of MNPs and colloidal particles successfully promoted the simultaneous production of SO 4 − and a large amount of HO under weakly alkaline (pH = 7.5–8.0) conditions, which made synergistic oxidation to remove micro-oil and organic pollution efficiently.

Abstract:The pulp and paper industry employs processes that produce a large amount of wastewater, resulting in pollution of the environment. In the present study, deinking wastewater was treated using an integrated process of combined coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and Fenton reaction system. The deinking wastewater produced from a large-scale papermaking company was treated. Results indicated that the sedimentation with coagulation and flocculation, used as a pretreatment process, was a preferred option for SS removal. The semi-extended aeration system for COD and BOD5 removal delivered excellent performance. The residual and barely biodegradable pollutants in the wastewater could be efficiently removed by Fenton reactions. The COD, BOD5, and SS total removal efficiencies achieved were 94%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. Measures for control proposed in the present study can efficiently resolve the problems encountered in the operation and can maintain a stable process. The integrated process combining coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and the Fenton reaction system is a favorable option for the long-term operation of the treatment of deinking wastewater. Fenton reactions as a tertiary process applied in deinking wastewater treatment can remove efficiently recalcitrant pollutants and show reliable performance for effluent.

Abstract:In our previous studies, several papermaking sludge-based flocculants (PSBFs) were synthesized from wood pulp papermaking sludge. The structure-activity relationships of the PSBFs have been investigated in simulated dye wastewater treatment, but their efficiencies in practical printing and dyeing wastewater (PPDW) treatment are unknown. Herein, an PSBF was prepared, and its performance is discussed in comparison to polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) in PPDW treatment. The PSBF was used in three ways: as an independent flocculant, as a PAC aid, or used to treat the effluent of the PAC system. The results indicated that adding PSBF alone produced similar color and chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) removals as the PAC system alone, but PSBF performed better than PAC when the pH of PPDW was higher than 7.0. Adding PSBF as a PAC aid improved the color, CODCr and turbidity removals, but the elimination efficiencies were slightly lower than those of the PAC + PAM system. However, when PSBF was used as a flocculant to treat the effluent of the PAC system (PAC → PSBF), the effluent qualities were enhanced. Compared with the PAC system, the color and CODCr removals of PAC → PSBF system increased by 16.21% and 13.26%, respectively. The excitation and emission matrix fluorescence results indicated that PSBF removed tryptophan-like pollutants more efficiently than PAC. Considering the pH requirements of the subsequent bioreactor treatment in practice, the PAC → PSBF system were also investigated at the PPDW pH level of 7.0. Its maximum removal efficiencies of color, CODCr and turbidity were 90.17%, 32.60% and 82.50%, respectively.

Abstract:The carboxymethylchitosan cladding coal ash (CWF) was oxidized by the high temperature using coal ash and sodium carboxymethyl chitosan as raw and processed material for treatment of simulated and actual printing and dyeing wastewater over iron-carbon micro-electrolysis. The results on pH and CWF dosage for effluent dispose were evaluated by the decolorization rate, COD removal efficiency and turbidity removal rate. The experimental results indicated that the decolorization rate was first augmented and then declined with the increase of pH, and attained a peak value when pH was at 5-6. The COD removal efficiency augmented with the augmented of pH, and attained a peak value when pH was 6-7. The turbidity removal rate was first increases and afterwards decreases with the augment of pH, and attained a peak value when pH was at 5-6. Furthermore, the optimum pH for the treatment of simulated dyeing wastewater was 6 over iron-carbon micro-electrolysis, which indicated that the appropriate pH can promote the degradation of wastewater.

Abstract:A coagulation–flocculation process was used to treat a paper-recycling wastewater with aluminum chloride as coagulant and a modified natural polymer, chitosan-g-PDMC (poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride), as flocculant. To minimize turbidity and sludge volume index (SVI), the experiments were carried out using jar tests and response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize this process. A central composite design, which is the standard design of RSM, was used to evaluate the effects and interactions of three factors, i.e. coagulant dosage, flocculant dosage and pH on the treatment efficiency. The optimal conditions obtained from the compromise of the two desirable responses, turbidity and SVI, were coagulant dosage of 759mgl−1, flocculant dosage of 22.3mgl−1 and pH 5.4, respectively. The RSM was demonstrated as an appropriate approach for the optimization of the coagulation–flocculation process by confirmation experiments.
Screening the Impact of Surfactants and Reaction Conditions on the De-Inkability of Different Printing Ink Systems for Plastic Packaging

Abstract:One of the major applications (40% in Europe) of plastic is packaging, which is often printed to display required information and to deliver an attractive aesthetic for marketing purposes. However, printing ink can cause contamination in the mechanical recycling process. To mitigate this issue, the use of surfactants in an alkaline washing process, known as de-inking, has been employed to remove printing ink and improve the quality of recyclates. Despite the existence of this technology, there are currently no data linking the de-inking efficiency with typical printing ink compositions. Additionally, it is necessary to investigate the de-inking process under the process parameters of existing recycling plants, including temperature, NaOH concentration, and retention time. This study aims to evaluate the performance of commonly used printing inks with different compositions under various washing scenarios for plastic recycling in conjunction with different de-inking detergents containing surfactants or mixtures of surfactants. The results indicate that the pigments applied to the ink have no significant effect on the de-inking process, except for carbon black (PBk 7). Nitrocellulose (NC) binder systems exhibit high de-inkability (over 95%) under the condition of 55 °C and 1 wt.% NaOH. However, crosslinked binder systems can impede the de-inking effect, whether used as a binder system or as an overprint varnish (OPV). The de-inking process requires heating to 55 °C with 1 wt.% NaOH to achieve a substantial effect. Based on the findings in this work, breaking the Van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds, and covalent bonds between the printing ink and plastic film is an essential step to achieve the de-inking effect. Further research is needed to understand the interaction between surfactants and printing inks, enabling the development of de-inkable printing inks and high-performance surfactants that allow for de-inking with less energy consumption. The surfactant and NaOH have a synergistic effect in cleaning the printing ink. NaOH provides a negative surface charge for the adsorption of the cationic head of the surfactant and can hydrolyze the covalent bonds at higher concentrations (>2 wt.%).
