Abstract:The hybrid power generation system uses renewable resources to avoid the issues of using traditional energy systems. This study investigates an integrated hybrid energy system with storage for the electrification of rural Indian areas. Several configurations are analyzed for techno-economic viability, and the optimal one is chosen. The hybrid system fulfills the energy demand of the rural community. The suggested system formed by integration consists of photovoltaics, wind turbines, diesel generators, and storage. The proposed approach employs a gray wolf optimization algorithm to simulate microgrid models to calculate the exact cost of energy. According to the findings, the optimal and most economical electrification system includes a 5.9 kW photovoltaic, 7 battery banks, a 1 kW wind generator, and 3-kW diesel generator units. The optimized system's total net present cost is $5874.34, with a LCOE of $0.305 per kWh. The results revealed that the optimum system reduced CO2 emissions when maximum renewable energy is employed in the modelling. Sensitivity analysis is employed to determine how the parameter's influence on energy prices has changed over time.

Abstract:Renewable resources can help reduce carbon emissions, but their inconsistency causes inconsistent energy generation, mandating the introduction of a battery bank to overcome the demand‐supply gap. The integration of renewables for electrical supply systems in rural regions has received much attention, as has the hybrid energy system with storage for microgrids. This work presents an optimization technique for the design and operation of a standalone microgrid with load demand. The research framework is demonstrated by a case study in a remote rural location in Uttarakhand (India). This research proposes an integrated techno‐economic optimization and power management of a standalone integrated renewable energy system to meet the electrical energy demand. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE), the net present cost (NPC), and pollution emission are minimized using grey wolf optimization. Four alternative models are compared based on environmental considerations and economic research. According to the simulation findings, the optimal configuration has a 0.203 $/kWh LCOE and a 92% renewable portion. In addition, the optimization results have been presented and compared. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the impact of various factors on the system in question.

Abstract:Rural villages can be electrified using renewable power sources for the area to grow effectively. Microgrids powered by renewable energy is more environmentally friendly and practical choices for electrifying rural areas. This study attempts to ascertain the technological and financial viability of an autonomous hybrid energy source for a remote Indian area in order to provide a reliable power supply. The region's load requirements can be met with the help of a solar energy system, biogas, wind energy, diesel generators, and batteries. Differential evaluation (DE) is used to optimize the proposed microgrid for grid-independent operation. The system's ultimate objective is to reduce energy costs and recommend workable component configurations. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the genetic algorithm (GA) are used to compare the DE findings. The finding suggested the optimal energy cost of 0.22 5,18,656, and a capital cost of $8,50,774. DE's total net present cost is 4.3% less than PSO and 5.2% less than GA. However, it has been determined that the recommended approach is more practical and affordable for electrifying rural areas.

Abstract:In the face of a significant power crisis, Bangladesh is turning towards renewable energy solutions, a move supported by the government's initiatives. This article presents the findings of a study conducted in a residential area of Pabna, Bangladesh, using HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources) Pro software version 3.14.2. The study investigates the feasibility and efficiency of a grid-connected hybrid power system, combining photovoltaics (PV), a biomass generator, and wind energy. The simulation produced six competing solutions, each featuring a distinct combination of energy sources. Among the configurations analyzed, the grid-connected PV–biomass generator system emerged as the most cost-effective, exhibiting the lowest COE at USD 0.0232, a total net present cost (NPC) of USD 321,798.00, and an annual operating cost of USD 6060.59. The system presents a simple payback period of 9.25 years, highlighting its economic viability. Moreover, this hybrid model significantly reduces CO2 emissions to 78,721 kg/year, compared to the 257,093 kg/year emissions from a solely grid-connected system, highlighting its environmental benefits. Sensitivity analyses further reveal that the system's performance is highly dependent on solar irradiance, indicating that slight variations in solar input can significantly impact the system's output. This study underscores the potential of integrating multiple renewable energy sources to address the power crisis in Bangladesh, offering a sustainable and economically viable solution while also mitigating environmental impacts.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents an optimization solution to reduce the operational cost for a hybrid residential microgrid consisting of diesel generator, wind turbine and photovoltaic array, and battery energy storage system. Traditionally, loads in residential microgrids are mainly supplied by diesel generators. Increasing development and integration of renewable energy resources and battery energy storage system into a residential microgrid, decreases the cost of generation, and increases environmental emission mitigation and generation efficiency. In this study, the optimization problem is solved using a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The primary objectives of the optimization procedure can be expressed as follows: (i) the minimization of total costs of DERs (ii) reduction of environmental emission in the MG system (iii) increasing the penetration level of RES. Several numerical results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method using demand, local solar irradiance, and wind speed. The proposed method results are shown that there is about a 35% reduction in CO<sub>2</sub> emission in the optimal configuration in comparison with the scenario in which only diesel generators provide the total demand of the MG system. It is observed that installing the optimum configuration during different years brought down the fuel to 44.36 (M-Liter). It is also worth mentioning that the optimal installation of DER units in different years plays an important role in increasing the MG system performance. The simulation results for the case verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach.</p>

Abstract:The concept of microgrids based on locally available renewable energy sources (RES) is becoming very popular in remote locations. They are going to play a significant role in future power systems providing economical, reliable and environmental benefits as compare to the existing power systems. But it can be only achieved by providing considerable attention and efforts to resolve the copious economic, commercial, and technical challenges incurred in their development. This work presents an economic evaluation considering the installation and operating cost of such a microgrid for remote terrains. An optimization problem is formulated for capital cost and running costs. A comparative cost analysis of different configurations of hybrid renewable energy resource system (HRES) is carried out using practical data. It is found that hybrid energy system consisting of solar/wind/diesel generator along with battery is the most feasible system. With the appearance of such microgrids the current way of expanding the electricity demand will revolutionize, exclusively for remote location being served below par by the customary power system.

Abstract:This research presents a comprehensive framework for designing cost‐effective and sustainable renewable energy systems in unelectrified regions. The framework identifies the optimal energy solution by integrating community‐specific data, cost analysis, life cycle assessment, and multi‐criteria decision‐making methods. The approach is validated through a real‐world case study, demonstrating its potential to optimize energy access and promote sustainability in off‐grid areas. The design of renewable energy systems traditionally emphasizes life cycle costs, often focusing primarily on emissions rather than a comprehensive life cycle impact assessment. This research proposes a four‐tier methodology to balance cost‐effectiveness and sustainability in the electrification of remote areas. Tier 1 focuses on understanding the community context by analyzing electrical load profiles, meteorological data, and component specifications for microgrid design. Tier 2 evaluates the feasibility of various systems, optimizing them through cost analysis and Multi‐Criteria Decision‐Making (MCDM) to rank alternatives. Tier 3 assesses environmental impacts using life cycle assessment, ranking alternatives based on environmental criteria. Tier 4 integrates cost and environmental rankings to determine the most suitable energy configurations, followed by sensitivity analysis to ensure robust decision‐making. The methodology is validated through a case study of an unelectrified remote community, demonstrating that the PV‐Wind Turbine‐Biomass Generator‐Converter configuration is the most robust alternative, proving to be the optimal choice in 50% of the analyzed scenarios, achieving a Cost of Energy of 0.213 USD/kWh while minimizing environmental impact across all 18 criteria considered over a 25‐year life cycle. This novel framework offers a scalable approach to designing renewable energy systems, enhancing sustainable electrification efforts in developing regions.

Abstract:This paper presents planning and optimization of standalone DC microgrids for rural and urban applications in India. Load profiles in the form of a rural village, an urban residential building and a business organisation are considered for the study. Using these load profiles, different microgrid configurations with generation from PV, wind turbine and biodiesel generators are constructed. Optimization studies are then carried out using Homer Energy software to determine the optimal system configuration which has the lowest cost of energy. Historical data of hourly solar irradiation and wind speed were also used in the study to obtain a realistic result. A special case study for the rural scenario with a partial connectivity to the grid is also conducted which is reminiscent to the poor reliability of supply in India. The study also gives a detail comparison between the various cost components, electrical productions, energy management and emissions for each of these systems. The results of optimization show reasonable cost of electricity for reliable supply of power for the various load configurations as compared to the actual grid prices.

Abstract:Due to rising population growth and economic development, there is indeed a growing demand for electricity. Both in aspects of generation and transmission, conventional power firms are striving to manage these demands. Moreover, the ubiquitous utilization of electricity and other power generators, which are mainly driven from fossil fuels, seems to have some limitations, like declining performance and restricted energy production. As a result, use of renewable energy sources is incredibly important. Decentralized power generation in remote regions has become the primary requirement of society, based on renewable energy. Particularly in comparison with the electrification of urban areas, rural electrification is quite expensive. Microgrid’s development utilizing hybrid power is a potential solution for the electrification of rural regions where the transmission chain of network’s extension is unfeasible or inefficient. This research aims to structure a power generation model associated with different HRES combinations using a HOMER software application at a location in India. In the findings of this research, it has been observed that NPC, O&M, COEs, and RF of on-grid energy systems are better than off-grid energy systems. In the study, between eight hybrid system combinations, the lowest COE of 0.034 $/kWh is obtained with the PV-WT-MH-GRID-CT system in the on-grid scenario. This analysis shows NPC, COE, O&M, and renewable fraction are sensitive to the variation in all the considered sensitivity parameters 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 .

Abstract:This paper aims to develop a rural energy system design framework and analyzes the techno-economic feasibility of potential hybrid energy systems (HES) for rural electrification of a village in district Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. At first, a comprehensive resource assessment is carried out. Subsequently, system size optimization and techno-economic viability is conducted using a standard software tool HOMER PRO to fulfil the peak-load demand. Due to the deficiency of wind power and biomass resources at the targeted site, the results indicate that a community power system based on solar PV as a primary energy source, batteries as a storage, diesel generator as a backup, and a time-constrained availability of national grid is the most feasible solution. Sensitivity analysis using macro-economic variables and derating factor of PV has been opted to ensure robustness and commercial applicability of the proposed HES. The study finds that levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) in grid-integrated systems (0.072$/kWh and 0.078$/kWh) is economical than the off-grid systems (0.145$/kWh and 0.167$/kWh). The obtained results indicate commercial efficacy of the grid-integrated configurations, where LCOE is lower than the existing government tariff. Most importantly, this hybrid energy system is capable of providing a 24/7 continuous electricity to the site under consideration.

Abstract:Abstract Growing energy demand, diminishing fossil fuel reserves and geopolitical tensions are serious concerns for any country’s energy strategy and security. These factors have a greater impact on developing countries, as many of them rely largely on traditional energy resources. Cleaner energy generation is the viable alternative for mitigating these problems, as well as achieving energy independence and tackling climate change. The article discusses planning and design optimization of a residential community microgrid based on multiple renewable resources. In particular, the design and techno-economic assessment of a grid-tied hybrid microgrid for meeting the electricity demand of an alluvial region, Urir Char, located in southern Bangladesh, was addressed. Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources is used for the evaluation and it is supplemented by a fuzzy-logic-based load profile design strategy. In addition to the analysis, a predictive load-shifting-based demand management is also introduced. Several cases were considered for the studies and, after considering several criteria, a grid-tied system comprising a photovoltaic array, wind turbine and energy storage system was found to be the best fit for powering the loads. The suggested system reduces the life-cycle cost by 18.3%, the levelized cost of energy by 61.9% and emissions by 77.2% when compared with the grid-only option. Along with the microgrid design, cooking emissions and energy categorization were also discussed.

Abstract:Alternative energy sources have significantly impacted the global electrical sector by providing continuous power to consumers. The deployment of renewable energy sources in order to serve the charging requirements of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) has become a crucial area of research in emerging nations. This research work explores the techno-economic and environmental viability of on-grid charging of PEVs integrated with renewable energy sources in the Surat region of India. The system is designed to facilitate power exchange between the grid network and various energy system components. The chosen location has contrasting wind and solar potential, ensuring diverse renewable energy prospects. PEV charging hours vary depending on the location. A novel metaheuristic-based optimization algorithm, the Pufferfish Optimization Algorithm (POA), was employed to optimize system component sizing by minimizing the system objectives including Cost of Energy (COE) and the total net present cost (TNPC), ensuring a lack of power supply probability (LPSP) within a permissible range. Our findings revealed that the optimal PEV charging station configuration is a grid-tied system combining solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels and wind turbines (WT). This setup achieves a COE of USD 0.022/kWh, a TNPC of USD 222,762.80, and a life cycle emission of 16,683.74 kg CO2-equivalent per year. The system also reached a 99.5% renewable energy penetration rate, with 3902 kWh/year of electricity purchased from the grid and 741,494 kWh/year of energy sold back to the grid. This approach could reduce reliance on overburdened grids, particularly in developing nations.

Abstract:This paper proposes an optimal sizing design and cost-benefit evaluation framework for stand-alone renewable microgrid system to serve rural community load usage in Northeast China. The microgrid system combines Photovoltaic arrays (PV), Wind turbines (WT), Tidal turbines (Tid), Battery (Bat) storage and hydrogen storage, respectively. The optimal component sizing is determined based on the actual local hourly meteorological data and load demand during a year using Chameleon swarm algorithm (CSA), with minimum Total net present cost (TNPC) of the microgrid system as the optimization objective and the reliability constraint is considered as Loss of power supply probability (LPSP). Meanwhile, a cost-benefit index is further introduced for conveniently evaluating the overall effectiveness of the microgrid systems. The results of the simulation experiments under the benchmark scenario reveal that the PV/WT/Tid/Bat system is the most viable approach for local load supply among different versions of the microgrid. Additionally, a thorough sensitivity investigation of the optimal sizing of two exemplary microgrid systems based on different energy storage is carried out under different techno-economic scenarios. This study can provide a more efficient and clean electrification scheme and insightful reference for investment in the power-starved Northeast China.

Abstract:Microgrids are designed to utilize renewable energy resources (RER) that are revolutionary choices in reducing the environmental effect while producing electricity. The RER intermittency poses technical and economic challenges for the microgrid systems that can be overcome by utilizing the full potential of hybrid energy storage systems (HESS). A microgrid comprising of a solar photovoltaic panel, wind turbine, lead-acid battery, electrolyzer, fuel cell, and hydrogen (H ) tank is considered for techno-economic feasibility and environmental impact assessment on a grid integration scenario. Mathematical functions are utilized to model the components for estimating annual hourly renewable generation and energy storage behavior. The load consumption model for 50 homes is generated using Gaussian distribution to incorporate the uncertainty. Optimal sizing of the microgrid components is determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to minimize the upfront installation cost and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Different energy storage penetration scenarios, e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% for the microgrid system, are considered where 100% penetration level stands for maintaining the load demand using the available resources without depending on the grid energy supply. The lowest LCOE is found between 0.06 /kWh, and the highest annual GHG is reduced to half compared to the grid emission. GHG is imposed around 62.14 (tCO e/yr) - 73.57 (tCO e/yr) for Madrid and Seville, respectively.

Abstract:The demand for renewable sources-based micro-grid systems is increasing all over the world to address the United Nation’s (UN) sustainable development goal 7 (SDG7) “affordable and clean energy”. However, without proper viability analysis, these micro-grid systems might lead to economic losses to both customers and investors. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the feasibility and sustainability of a hybrid micro-grid system based on available renewable resources in remote hill tracts region of Bangladesh. Nine different scenarios are analyzed here, and a combination of solar, hydro, biogas, and diesel generator systems are found to be the best feasible solution in regard to the least cost of electricity and emission. The optimized result shows that with a renewable fraction of 0.995, the unit levelized cost of energy of the micro-grid system is $0.182 and it emits 54 and 117 times less CO 2 compared to grid-based and diesel-based systems. Further, the fuel share of the system being 0.5% and greenhouse gas per energy being 0.06425 kg/KWh, validate the system as highly sustainable and eco-friendly. With the ability to fulfill load demands without interrupting supply, and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, the designed microgrid can provide sustainable energy solutions to any hill-tracts of Bangladesh.

Abstract:The novel concept of using hybrid renewable resources to provide clean energy helps to address the unique shortcomings of each renewable source. This study describes an innovative concept about the design of optimal grid PV/biomass 100 % renewable and fully reliable energy systems without considering energy storage devices. By leveraging community solar and biomass resources, the proposed system can power remote villages with a minimum cost of energy. Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is employed to perform an optimal procedure. The PV-biomass deployment project's economic viability is assessed using financial metrics such as net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE). In order to install a hybrid system at the chosen site, the optimal configuration (PV 87 kW, biomass 1 29 kW, and biomass 2 125 kW) was examined. The NPC, COE, and total system cost, in this configuration, are 0.02/kWh, and $892,892, respectively. The combined yearly consumption of the biomass1 and biomass2 generators is 704.81 tons of wheat straw. The total annual CO 2 emissions of the PV, biomass1, and biomass2 generators in this system are avoided by 729.5 tons. The findings clearly demonstrate that the suggested approach can manage a reliable power flow with a suitable configuration. The solar PV and biomass system examined in this study will probably be a specialized solution in regions with abundant biomass resources; nevertheless, it offers a reliable starting point for the creation of larger-scale bioenergy value chains with the long-term objective of generating electricity from wheat straw biomass materials.

Abstract:Integrating renewable energy sources into conventional power system is a solution to the horrendous problems of environmental pollution and global energy crisis. But the uncertain nature of renewable sources inspires the researchers to combine different energy sources as well as energy storage devices to ensure power supply reliability. In this paper, an intelligent energy management system (EMS) algorithm is proposed which dictates the power flow among the hybrid renewable system, energy storage and the grid for two cases. Different energy storage systems are considered. Their suitability for use in the proposed system is evaluated. With the appropriate storage system two different cases are considered for fixed and variable load. Each case is studied for three hypotheses i.e. grid, energy storage and optimal grid and energy storage participation. Optimal participation of both the grid and energy storage systems poses maximum financial benefit of 3190.50 INR and 2513.70 INR for both types of loads. This paper also compares the economic impacts of using solar PV panels and ESSs both in standalone and grid connected modes.

Abstract:Although hybrid wind-biomass-battery-solar energy systems have enormous potential to power future cities sustainably, there are still difficulties involved in their optimal planning and designing that prevent their widespread adoption. This article aims to develop an optimal sizing of microgrids by incorporating renewable energy (RE) technologies for improving cost efficiency and sustainability in urban areas. Diverse RE technologies such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, biomass, batteries, wind turbines, and converters are considered for system configuration to obtain this goal. Net present cost ( NPC ) is this study's objective function for optimal sizing microgrid configuration. For demonstration, we assess the technical, economic factors, and atmospheric emissions of optimal hybrid renewable energy systems for Putrajaya City in Malaysia. The required solar radiation data, temperature, and wind speeds are collected from the NASA surface metrological database. From the quantitative analysis of simulations, the biomass-battery-based system has optimal economic outcomes compared to other systems with an NPC of around 1.07 M$, while the cost of energy ( COE ) is 0.118 $/kWh. Moreover, environmentally safe nitrogen oxide emissions, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide concentrations exist. The grid-tied RE technology boasts cost-effectiveness, with an NPC of 348,318 $ and a COE of 0.0112 $/kWh. This study aids decision-makers in formulating policies for integrating hybrid RE systems in urban areas, promoting sustainable energy generation.

Abstract:Renewable energy has grown in popularity in recent years as a solution to combat the effects of pollution on the environment. The main purpose of this research is to design a microgrid system in Lakshadweep Island to determine the cost and dependability of a solar photovoltaic system that is combined with biomass, wind energy and diesel generator. Two types of hybrid systems like solar/biomass generator/wind turbine and Solar/diesel generator/biomass are investigated to get an optimal solution using HOMER Pro software. The hybrid microgrid system is optimized with low cost of energy (COE) and less environmental pollution. The reliability indice like unmet load is determined for each case to access the performance of the system. The influence of different Weibull shape parameter in solar/biomass generator/wind turbine hybrid system with sensitive variation of solar irradiation and wind speed are discussed. The scheduling of diesel generator in solar/diesel generator/biomass generator with various scenarios are analyzed based on minimum net present cost. The optimization results shows that the solar/diesel generator/biomass hybrid system has low net present cost of 432513 $ and cost of energy of 0.215 $/kWh as compared to solar/biomass/wind turbine for the selected site location. The proposed solar/diesel generator/biomass system produces emission of 7506 kg/yr. The emission produced in Lakshadweep Island using the proposed model is reduced since this Island currently produces electricity mainly with diesel generators. The optimal sizing of various components in microgrid system is performed to get the optimal solution.

Abstract:In recent years; owing to the effect of fossil fuels on global warming, the exhaustion of oil fields, and the lucrative impacts of renewable energy resources (RESs), the penetration of RESs has been increasing significantly in power systems. An effective way to benefit from all RESs advantages is by applying them in microgrid systems (MGS). Furthermore, MGS can ease the way for utilizing a large amount of RESs, if its economic-environmental-technical aspects of it are taken into account. In this regard, this paper proposes an optimal solution for the energy management of a microgrid by considering a comprehensive study. In the proposed methodology, different distributed energy resources such as wind turbines generator (WTG), energy storage (ES), combined heat and power (CHP), rubbish burning agent (RBA), and diesel generators (DG) are modeled. In addition, electric vehicles (EVs) are considered a load with uncertainty. The objective function of the proposed method is to minimize the microgrid's total cost by considering the microgrid's emission cost and technical constraints. In this study, the microgrid's technical, environmental, and economic aspects are investigated. In addition, the optimization problem is converted into a mixed-integer linear programming method by using the proper linearization method. In this paper, the increasing effect of wind energy penetration rate on the total price also has been studied. The simulation results show that by increasing the wind energy penetration rate by up to 30% of total power, the total cost will decrease by up to 30.9%.
