Abstract:The objective of this work was to analyze four essential oils (EOs) from Rhododendron species in China and evaluate their repellent activity against Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults. These four EOs from Rhododendron species, including R. capitatum, R. przewalskii, R. mucronulatum, and R. micranthum, were obtained by hydrodistillation. Major components of four EOs were identified as sesquiterpenoids by GC-MS. The relatively high components included cedrene (22.20%), borneol (36.64%), 4-(2,3,4,6-tetramethylphenyl)-3-buten-2-one (27.74%), and germacrene D (27.60%). Repellent activity of EOs from Rhododendron species was investigated against T. castaneum, L. serricorne, and L. bostrychophila adults for the first time. In this study, EOs had demonstrated their repellent activities against three stored-product insects in 2- and 4-h exposure. The above results can not only provide comprehensive utilization of plant resources of Rhododendron genus but also establish a very good perspective of novel application to control stored-product insects.
Chemical Composition of Essential Oils from Three Rhododendron Species and Their Repellent, Insecticidal and Fumigant Activities

Abstract:In order to assess the repellent, contact, and fumigant properties of three essential oils (EOs) from Rhododendron species in China against adults of Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, Sitophilus oryzae, this study analyzed their chemical components. The three EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation from leaves of Rhododendron species, including R. davidsonianum, R. heliolepis and R. strigillosum. Sesquiterpenoids and monoterpenes were the main components of the three EOs that were detected by GC/MS and GC-FID. α-Pinene, β-Caryophyllene, α-Humulene, Kaura-16-ene and Sandaracopimaradiene was among the comparatively high components. In this study, the EOs of three Rhododendron species demonstrated repellent activities against T. castaneum and L. serricorne in 2 h and 4 h exposure, but the repellent activity to S. oryzae was not obvious. The three EOs from R. davidsonianum, R. heliolepis and R. strigillosum also had contact activities and fumigant activities against the Tribolium castaneum (LC50 =13.453 mg/L air, 4.728 mg/L air, 4.529 mg/L air and LD50 =15.027 μg/adult, 15.017 μg/adult, 10.994 μg/adult, respectively), Lasioderma serricorne (LC50 =8.584 mg/L air, 6.044 mg/L air, 6.355 mg/L air and LD50 =4.566 μg/adult, 7.067 μg/adult, 3.652 μg/adult, respectively) and Sitophilus oryzae (LC50 =3.304 mg/L air, 6.795 mg/L air, 7.130 mg/L air and LD50 =10.200 μg/adult, 15.021 μg/adult, 9.178 μg/adult, respectively) adults. The above results not only opened a potential prospect for applications of Rhododendrons in the prevention and control of insects in stored products, but also provide a basis for the comprehensive utilization of the rich natural Rhododendron plant resources.

Abstract:In this work, the essential oils (EOs) from leaves and flowers of Rhododendron spinuliferum and Rhododendron spiciferum were extracted by hydrodistillation, chemical compositions of EOs were analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. For R. spinuliferum and R. spiciferum , α- and β-pinene were common major compounds. It provided an opportunity to test the potential synergistic effect of α- and β-pinene among EOs. Firstly, four EOs and two major compounds (α- and β-pinene) exhibited fumigant, contact and repellent activities to three stored-product insects. To the red flour beetle, leaves of both species exhibited stronger contact toxicity than flowers did. This trend was diverse to the booklouse. Furthermore, binary mixture bioassays of α- and β-pinene were performed following natural proportions. Results of multiple linear regression showed that α-pinene, trans-β-farnesene and bornyl acetate were responsible for the contact toxicity to the red flour beetle and booklouse with diverse contribution.

Insecticidal and acetylcholine esterase inhibition activity of Rhododendron thymifolium essential oil and its main constituent against two stored product insects

Abstract:In this work, we investigated the bioactivities of the essential oil (EO) extracted from the Rhododendron thymifolium and its principal germacrone against Lasioderma serricorne and Tribolium castaneum. The EO was obtained by steam distillation. Germacrone was obtained by cryogenic crystallization. The bioactivity of EO and germacrone was tested via contact and repellent activity assays. The results showed that EO and germacrone possessed contact and repellent activities against two species of insects. EO exhibited obvious contact activity against the L. serricorn adults, larvae and T. castaneum larvae with LD50 values of 29.15 µg/adult, 42.73 µg/larva, 19.65 µg/larva respectively. Germacrone exhibited excellent contact activity against the L. serricorne adults, larvae and the T. castaneum larvae with LD50 values of 17.18 µg/adult, 20.94 µg/larva, 20.93 µg/larva respectively. And at the highest testing concentrations (78.63 and 15.73 nL/cm2), the repellent activity of EO and germacrone on two target insects was comparable to that of the positive control (DEET) after 30 h exposure. In especially, in the treatment of the 120 h after the repellent activity of EO and germacrone against T.castaneum adults and larvae were still very significant and showed the same level percentage repellency as DEET. Meanwhile, germacrone exhibited inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity with IC50 values of 3%. The results indicated that the EO of R. thymifolium and germacrone had the potential to be developed as natural insecticides and repellents for the control of T. castaneum and L. serricorne.

Abstract:The bioactivities of methyl eugenol (ME) against rice insect pests, the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilarparvata lugens, the leaf folder (RLF), Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, the striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis, and their major natural enemies, a predator Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and parasitoids Anagrus nilaparvatae and Trichogramma japonicum were determined under laboratory conditions. The results showed ME had repellent, systemic and contact insecticidal activities against BPH. The nymphal mortality increased with raised ME concentrations. The LC50 value for BPH using an impregnated filter paper bioassay was 1025 mg/L which was much lower than that of 3778 mg/L obtained from an immersion bioassay. ME also had a contact toxicity against RLF larvae with a LC50 of 250 mg/L However, bioactivity of ME against SSB larvae was much lower than against RLF. Only 21.8% of 2nd instar SSB larvae died at 24 h after being treated with 8000 mg/L ME. In addition, ME also had contact toxicity to predator C. lividipennis and parasitic natural enemies A. nilaparvatae, T. japonicum, with LC50 values of 527, 105 and 123 mg/L, respectively. Even so, the toxicity of ME to natural enemies was much lower than that of chemical insecticides. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Preliminary Study on Insecticidal Potential and Chemical Composition of Five Rutaceae Essential Oils against Thrips flavus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Abstract:To meet the demand for novel pest management strategies to combat the development of insecticide resistance, plant essential oils may be a promising alternative source. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of five essential oils from the Rutaceae plant family against Thrips flavus Schrank (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) under laboratory conditions. The plant essential oils were citrus oil (Citrus reticulata Blanco), Chuan-shan pepper oil (Zanthoxylum piasezkii Maxim.), zanthoxylum oil (Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim.), pomelo peel oil (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.) and orange leaf oil (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck). Among the essential oils evaluated, orange leaf oil (LC50 = 0.26 g/L), zanthoxylum oil (LC50 = 0.27 g/L), and pomelo peel oil (LC50 = 0.44 g/L) resulted in a higher gastric toxicity under laboratory conditions. The results of the pot experiment also showed that orange leaf oil (93.06 ± 3.67% at 540.00 g a.i.·hm−2, 97.22 ± 1.39% at 720 g a.i.·hm−2, 100.00% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2) zanthoxylum oil (98.73 ± 1.27% at 900 g a.i.·hm−2), and pomelo peel oil (100.00% at 900 g a.i.·hm−2) exhibited a higher control efficacy, being the most effective against T. flavus after 7 days of treatment. The essential oil components were then identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The insecticidal activity of orange leaf oil, pomelo peel oil, and zanthoxylum oil could be attributed to their main constituents, such as methyl jasmonate (50.92%), D-limonene (76.96%), and linalool (52.32%), respectively. In the olfactory test, adult T. flavus were attracted by zanthoxylum oil and Chuan-shan pepper oil. We speculated that linalool might be the key signaling compound that attracts T. flavus. These results showed that orange leaf oil, zanthoxylum oil, and pomelo peel oil exhibited insecticidal activities under controlled conditions. They can be implemented as effective and low-toxicity botanical insecticides and synergistic agents against T. flavus.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Alpinia zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’, as a special spice, has attracted social attention for its potential to replace synthetic chemicals as insecticides and repellents in food protection. In this work, the essential oils (EOs) from different organs of Alpinia zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’ (stem and leaf, flower, and rhizome) were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The contact toxicities and repellent activities of the extracted EOs, along with their common components, against three insect species (Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, and Liposcelis bostrychophila) were evaluated. GC-MS analysis identified 25 components, and eucalyptol and camphor were the common primary components in the three EOs. The result showed that EOs and the main components (eucalyptol and camphor) exhibited varying degrees of contact toxicity and repellent activity against three insect species. Camphor exhibited more obvious contact toxicity than eucalyptol against both insect species (L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila), but the toxic effect was opposite for T. castaneum. The gray relation analysis explained that REOA had the strongest repellency against L. serricorne, with a coefficient of 0.52. The results in this study suggest that EOs of A. zerumbet cv. ’Variegata’ have the potential to be developed into botanical insecticides and repellents to control stored-product insects.

Abstract:PURPOSE To explore differences in the patterns of dose spillage to normal brain in stereotactic radiosurgery when using the Gamma Knife Perfexion (GKP) versus single-isocenter volumetric modulated arc radiosurgery (VMAS) to treat multiple metastases. METHODS Radiosurgery plans were generated on five T1-weighted MRI data sets for delivery with a Gamma Knife Perfexion (Elekta GammaPlan V10.1) and a Varian accelerator using VMAS (Philips Pinnacle V9.2). Each data set contained between three and five brain metastases. The percent of the target volume receiving the prescription dose (V100%) was >99% for each target. No heterogeneity corrections were used with either planning system. Following planning, the images, contours, and dose distributions were exported to an analysis program (VelocityAI). On each data set, the normal brain volumes receiving 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of the prescription dose were determined and tabulated. Normal brain was defined as brain minus any target volumes. A percent change from GKP to VMAS was calculated for each dose level. Isodose lines and DVHs were generated for each modality and overlaid. RESULTS Dose spillage to normal brain was consistently higher for single-isocenter VMAS compared to GKP, even when the volume of brain receiving the prescription dose remained similar or decreased. This increase in dose spillage could be seen for all dose levels (V90%-V20%), and was more significant for lower dose levels. Levels V20-40% showed an average increase of+653% compared to GKP. Levels V70-90% showed an average increase of +355%. The average increase across all levels was +546%. CONCLUSION Dose spillage to normal brain is significantly increased when treating multiple metastases with single-isocenter VMAS compared to multi-shot treatment with GKP. The clinical implications of this increased spillage should be examined further, particularly in situations where patients may receive multiple SRS treatments or radiosurgery combined with whole-brain radiotherapy.

Abstract:The use of Förster or fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) as a spectroscopic technique has been in practice for over 50 years. A search of ISI Web of Science with just the acronym "FRET" returns more than 2300 citations from various areas such as structural elucidation of biological molecules and their interactions, in vitro assays, in vivo monitoring in cellular research, nucleic acid analysis, signal transduction, light harvesting and metallic nanomaterials. The advent of new classes of fluorophores including nanocrystals, nanoparticles, polymers, and genetically encoded proteins, in conjunction with ever more sophisticated equipment, has been vital in this development. This review gives a critical overview of the major classes of fluorophore materials that may act as donor, acceptor, or both in a FRET configuration. We focus in particular on the benefits and limitations of these materials and their combinations, as well as the available methods of bioconjugation.

Abstract:Red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, which is an invasive alien ant, causes serious ecological and public safety problems. Concerns about the impact of traditional synthetic pesticides on nontarget organisms, plant essential oils (EOs) as alternative products with lower environmental impact can be used to control insects. The "push-pull" strategy is considered to be a method of controlling the number and distribution of pests through attraction and repulsion. To find active compounds with effect on the behavior of RIFA, 6 types of EO of plant flowers with a strong aroma, including Osmanthus fragrans (Thunb.) Lour., Sophora japonica Linn, Eugenia caryoph mu llata Thunb., Ligustrum compactum (Wall. exG. Don) Hook.f., Jasminum sambac (L.) Ait., Allium polyrhizum Turcz. Ex Regel were studied by Y-tube experiment, electrophysiological detection (EAG), and gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). The results showed that different concentrations of six EOs significantly affected the behavioral selectivity of different castes of RIFA, the data of high concentration-repellent and low concentration-attractive have been recorded. The repellent rate of 1000 mu g/ml L. compactum of EO was 68.75 % and the attraction rate of 2 mu g/ml of EO was 66.25 % on small worker ants. For large worker ants, both 1000 mu g/ml (repellent rate: 72.50 %) and 40 mu g/ml (attractive rate: 68.75 %) of L. compactum EO reached an extremely significant difference. As for E. caryoph mu llata EOs, the repellent rate of male ants was 67.5 % at 1000 mu g/ml and 68.75 % of the attraction rate was calculated at 2 mu g/ml. The most interesting finding was that all concentrations of L. compactum EOs showed a remarkable attractive effect on virgin ants and the attraction rate of 1000 mu g/ml EO reached an extremely significant difference (attraction rate: 72.5 %). The highest absolute EAG values of different castes of RIFA in the EO were followed as: small worker ants (1.8788 mV, J. sambac), large worker ants (1.5550 mV, O. fragrans), male ants (1.6088 mV, A. polyrhizum), and virgin ants (1.2350 mV, E. caryoph mu llata). The GC-MS results of the EOs were followed as: the compounds with high content in O. fragrans EO were butyl phthalate (37.95 %) and p-methoxyphenethyl alcohol (16.76 %); the main chemical components in S. japonica EO were benzeneethanol (20.62 %) and phenol (11.16 %); the total contents of eugenol (82.5 %) and aceteugenol (15.81 %) reached 98.31 % in E. caryoph mu llata EO; the most compound of EO was benzyl alcohol (19.33 %), followed by linalool (18.70 %) in J. sambac EO; the main chemical components of L. compactum EO were benzyl alcohol (17.45 %) and phenethyl alcohol (27.63 %); five compounds, including pentacosane (11.78 %), heptacosane (10.37 %), oleylamide (11.9 %), non-acosane (20.15 %), and octacosane (8.24 %) were the main chemical components in A. polyrhizum EO. The GC-EAD results showed that three compounds (estragole, alpha-humulene, and caffeine) were identified to have the potential to develop as behavioral orienting chemicals against worker ants of RIFA. Furthermore, several compounds were expected to be developed as attractants for reproductive ants, including eugenol, cis-linalool oxide, furfural, and its analogs. Our data will provide basic materials for the "push-pull" strategy and have the potential to lay the foundation for the eventual development of efficient and safe repellents.
Chemical constituents, antibacterial, acaricidal and anti-inflammatory activities of the essential oils from four Rhododendron species

Abstract:As the ornamental plants and traditional medicines, Rhododendron przewalskii, R. anthopogonoides, R. thymifolium , and R. capitatum are widely distributed in western China. In this paper, the essential oils from these four species were extracted by supercritical extraction and the components were analyzed using headspace solid phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), the antibacterial, acaricidal and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated. Results showed that R. thymifolium (RTEO) contained the highest yield of 0.99% with 246 compounds, followed by R. capitatum (RCEO, 0.81%) with 290 chemicals, R. anthopogonoides (RAEO, 0.57%) with 302 compounds and R. przewalskii (RPEO, 0.30%) with 294 components. They also exhibited the safety at given doses and have the anti-inflammatory in vitro and in vivo tests via inhibiting the cytokines productions, the acaricidal and antibacterial activities also were found. 4-Hydroxy-3-methylacetophenone from RPEO, α-pinene and β-pinene from RAEO, β-farnesene and germacrone from RTEO, and benzylacetone from RCEO, as main and active components, inhibited the NO content in RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS. These results indicated that four essential oils have certain medicinal value and laid the foundation for the development of these species as raw materials for the pharmaceutical and perfume industries.

Abstract:Essential oils produced by Cymbopogon distans and Ruta graveolens with a similar Chinese name could be explained as book fragrance in the Chinese idiom, "shu xiang men di", namely, a wealthy intellectual family according to ancient Chinese. Therefore , volatile oils from these two plants and their main compounds were tested to explore their antifungal, repellent and insecticide actions. In this study, essential olis (EOs) of C. distans exhibited significant antifungal activity against Rhizopus stolonifera ( 97%), Mucor racemosus (97%), and Trichoderma viride (84%); its main compounds display interesting activity, such as methyleugenol (87%) and elemicine (85%) against T. viride , and butyl hydroxytoluene against M. racemosus (90%) and R. stolonifera (95%). EOs of R. graveolens and other major chemical constituents showed weak inhibitory effects against other fungi ( Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium oxysporum ). Then, EOs ( C. distans and R. graveolens ) and its main compounds exhibited obvious repellent activity (more than 85%) at the concentration of 16 nL/cm2, which was consistent with the repellency of the positive control (DEET). In terms of insecticidal activity, the mortality of C. distans volatile oil against R. padi (56.4%) was lower than that of R. graveolens volatile oil (92.4%), and all compounds showed strong lethal effects. These results provide a natural substance for controlling fungi and insects when storing books, and which can be used as a biological pesticide for industrial production. Through our study, the book fragrance in the Chinese idiom "shu xiang men di" was speculated to be the EO odor of C. distans.

Abstract:The red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, is an invasive pest that is extremely aggressive and thus poses a strong threat to human health, agricultural production, equipment and the environment. In this study, we evaluated the repellent effects of eight Chinese herbal essential oils (EOs) on RIFAs, and identified the main repellent components in the EOs. Results showed that all eight EOs had outstanding repellency to RIFAs, among which A. argyi and S. album EOs had the strongest repellent effects on RIFAs. GC-MS revealed 34 ingredients in A. argyi EO, among which sesquiterpenoids and their oxygenated derivatives accounted for the greatest proportion (50 %), followed by monoterpenes and their oxygenated derivatives (47.06 %) and unknown components (2.94 %). Dipentene, 1-caryophyllene, p-cymene, α-terpineol, and Δ-cadinene were the most abundant compounds. A total of 61 ingredients were identified in S. album EO, including monoterpenes and their oxygenated derivatives (40.98 %), sesquiterpenoids and their oxygenated derivatives (39.34 %), diterpenoids and their oxygenated derivatives (3.28 %), aromatic compounds (3.28 %), and unknown components (13.12 %). Among them, the most abundant compounds were diethyl phthalate, α-cetone, 2-phenylethanol and sandacanol. The GC-EAD results showed that RIFA workers exhibited strong electroantennographic responses to dipentene, α-terpineol and 1-caryophyllene from A. argyi EO, as well as to linalool, 2-phenylethanol and benzyl acetate from S. album EO. Furthermore, all of the above six ingredients had significant repellent effects against RIFAs based on behavioral experiments. In conclusion, A. argyi and S. album EOs have good repellent effects on RIFAs, and the active ingredients include dipentene, α-terpineol, 1-caryophyllene, linalool, 2-phenylethanol and benzyl acetate. Our findings provide new information for the development of green, safe, and efficient repellents against RIFAs.

Abstract:Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (D. citri) is one of the major pests in the citrus industry, which spreads Citrus Huanglongbing disease. It has developed resistance to chemical insecticides. Therefore, searching for greener solutions for pest management is critically important. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the repellent and insecticidal efficacy of essential oils (EOs) from four species of Myrtaceae plants: Psidium guajava (PG), Eucalyptus robusta (ER), Eucalyptus tereticornis (ET), and Baeckea frutescens (BF) against D. citri and to analyze their chemical compositions. GC-MS analysis was performed, and the results indicated that the EOs of PG, ER, ET, and BF were rich in terpenoids, ketones, esters, and alcohol compounds. The repellent rate of all four EOs showed that it decreased with exposure time but increased with the concentration of EOs from 80.50% to 100.00% after treating D. citri for 6 h with four EOs at 100% concentration and decreased to 67.71% to 85.49% after 24 h of exposure. Among the compounds from the EOs tested, eucalyptol had the strongest repellent activity, with a 24 h repellency rate of 100%. The contact toxicity bioassay results showed that all EOs have insecticidal toxicity to D. citri; the LC50 for nymphs was 36.47–93.15 mL/L, and for adults, it was 60.72–111.00 mL/L. These results show that when PG is used as the reference material, the ER, ET, and BF EOs have strong biological activity against D. citri, which provides a scientific basis for the further development of plant-derived agrochemicals.

Abstract:The chemical composition of eight (seven shoot and one inflorescence) essential oils (EOs) of Rh. tomentosum H. plants growing in Eastern Lithuania is reported. The plant material was collected during different phases of vegetation (from April to October). The oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from air-dried aerial parts (leaves and inflorescences). In total, up to 70 compounds were identified by GC-MS and GC (flame-ionization detector, FID); they comprised 91.0 ± 4.7%-96.2 ± 3.1% of the oil content. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (54.1 ± 1.5%-76.1 ± 4.5%) were found to be the main fraction. The major compounds were palustrol (24.6 ± 2.6%-33.5 ± 4.4%) and ledol (18.0 ± 2.9%-29.0 ± 5.0%). Ascaridol isomers (7.0 ± 2.4%-14.0 ± 2.4% in three oils), myrcene (7.2 ± 0.3% and 10.1 ± 1.3%), lepalol (3.3 ± 0.3% and 7.9 ± 3.0%), and cyclocolorenone isomers (4.1 ± 2.5%) were determined as the third main constituents. The toxic activity of marsh rosemary inflorescence and shoot oils samples was evaluated using a brine shrimp (Artemia sp.) bioassay. LC50 average values (11.23-20.50 µg/mL) obtained after 24 h of exposure revealed that the oils were notably toxic. The oil obtained from shoots gathered in September during the seed-ripening stage and containing appreciable amounts of palustrol (26.0 ± 2.5%), ledol (21.5 ± 4.0%), and ascaridol (7.0 ± 2.4%) showed the highest toxic activity. Radical scavenging activity of Rh. tomentosum EOs depended on the plant vegetation stage. The highest activities were obtained for EOs isolated from young shoots collected in June (48.19 ± 0.1 and 19.89 ± 0.3 mmol/L TROLOX (6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetra-methylchromane-2-carboxylic acid) equivalent obtained by, respectively, ABTS•+ (2,2'-amino-bis(ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt) and DPPH•(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assays). Agar disc diffusion assay against pathogenic yeast Candida parapsilosis revealed the potential antifungal activity of EOs. An alternative investigation of antifungal activity employed mediated amperometry at yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae-modified electrodes. The subjection of yeast cells to vapors of EO resulted in a three to four-fold increase of electrode responses due to the disruption of yeast cell membranes.
Plant Essential Oils: Dual Action of Toxicity and Egg-Laying Inhibition on Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), Unveiling Their Potential as Botanical Pesticides

Abstract:Tetranychus urticae, a prominent pest mite in strawberry and vegetable cultivation in China, has developed escalating resistance due to extensive chemical pesticide application. Consequently, there is an urgent need to identify safe and efficacious methods to reduce resistance development. In this study, 38 commercially available plant essential oils (EOs) were screened for their acaricidal potential and ability to inhibit oviposition. The findings revealed that 13 EOs exhibited notable acaricidal activity, with lemon EO demonstrating the highest toxicity, followed by sage, patchouli, frankincense, lemongrass, palmarosa, and oregano EOs. In addition, 18 EOs displayed significant inhibitory effects on oviposition, with lemon EO exhibiting the highest inhibition rate (99.15%) and inhibition index (0.98). Subsequently, sage, frankincense, clove, lemongrass, oregano, patchouli, myrrh, black pepper, palmarosa, and geranium EOs also showed inhibition rates exceeding 50%. Despite black pepper, clove, myrrh, and oregano EOs demonstrating relatively low toxicity against T. urticae, they exhibited heightened efficacy in inhibiting oviposition and suppressing population expansion. This study conducted a comparative assessment of the acaricidal and oviposition inhibition activities of EOs and their principal constituents, thus providing a theoretical basis for the development of botanical acaricides against T. urticae.

Abstract:Purpose Policy statements recommend the use of ultrasound guidance (USG) to improve patient safety during placement of central venous catheters (CVCs). Studies have conclusively demonstrated greater success rates and fewer complications with the use of USG in catheter placement using the internal jugular vein approach. Data supporting the use of USG for the subclavian vein (SCV) approach, however, have been less conclusive, and USG for SCV cannulation is rarely used in clinical practice. We compared USG placement versus anatomic placement during subclavian insertion of a CVC. Methods A prospective randomized study was performed in March 2010 using a simulation model. Results Ultrasound guidance did not provide a statistically significant benefit for successful cannulation of the SCV (93.3% with USG and 100% without; P=0.15 or 2) or for rate of inadvertent arterial puncture (3.3% with USG and 0% without; P=0.31). Conclusions The use of USG to access the SCV utilizing a task trainer did not improve time to cannulation or success rates. Further study is required to delineate why USG for SCV cannulation has not been widely adopted in clinical practice.
Comparative Metabolomic Responses of Three Rhododendron Cultivars to the Azalea Lace Bug (Stephanitis pyrioides)

Abstract:Rhododendron, with its high ornamental value and ecological benefits, is severely impacted by the azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides), one of its primary pests. This study utilized three Rhododendron cultivars, 'Zihe', 'Yanzhimi', and 'Taile', to conduct a non-targeted metabolomic analysis of leaf samples before and after azalea lace bug stress using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GCMS) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS). A total of 81 volatile metabolites across 11 categories and 448 nonvolatile metabolites across 55 categories were detected. Significant differences in metabolic profiles were observed among the different cultivars after pest stress. A total of 47 volatile compounds and 49 nonvolatile metabolites were upregulated in the most susceptible cultivar 'Zihe', including terpenes, alcohols, nucleotides, amino acids, and carbohydrates, which are involved in energy production and secondary metabolism. Conversely, 'Yanzhimi' showed a downtrend in both the differential volatiles and metabolites related to purine metabolism and zeatin biosynthesis under pest stress. The resistant cultivar 'Taile' exhibited moderate changes, with 17 volatile compounds and 17 nonvolatile compounds being upregulated and enriched in the biosynthesis of amino acids, pentose, glucuronate interconversions, carbon metabolism, etc. The phenylalanine metabolic pathway played an important role in the pest resistance of different susceptible cultivars, and relevant metabolites such as phenylethyl alcohol, methyl salicylate, and apigenin may be involved in the plant's resistance response. The results of this study provide a new perspective on the metabolomics of Rhododendron–insect interactions and offer references for the development of pest control strategies.

Abstract:Haemaphysalis longicornis, which is widely distributed in China, can transmit various tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, babesiosis, rickettsia disease and so on, and do great harm to human health and the development of animal husbandry. Chemical acaricides are the most traditional tick control method, but because of its many shortcomings, there is an urgent need to find a substitute with high efficiency, environmental protection and low toxicity. It has been found that some plant essential oils (EOs) have good insecticidal activity and environmental safety. In this study, the components of EOs from Pimenta racemosa and Eugenia caryophyllata were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their potential for application in the control of Haemaphysalis longicornis were studied. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that the main components of P. racemosa EO were eugenol (64.07%), those of E. caryophyllata EO were Hexadecanoic acid, 2-methylpropyl ester (51.84%) and eugenol (39.76%). Larval packet test showed that the EOs of P. racemosa and E. caryophyllata had significant acaricidal activity against unfed larvae of H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 1.20 mg/mL and 0.47 mg/mL and LC90 values of 8.76 mg/mL and 2.91 mg/mL, respectively. The P. racemosa EO, E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol showed significant acaricidal activity against unfed nymph H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 1.65 mg/mL, 2.29 mg/mL and 0.93 mg/mL and LC90 values of 5.03 mg/mL, 11.01 mg/mL and 4.77 mg/mL, respectively. The P. racemosa EO, E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol showed significant acaricidal activity against unfed adults H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 0.51 mg/mL, 2.57 mg/mL and 1.83 mg/mL and LC90 values of 2.44 mg/mL, 11.44 mg/mL and 2.54 mg/mL, respectively. Enzyme assays revealed that the E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol significantly inhibited the activity of carboxylesterase (CarE), eugenol significantly inhibited the activity of catalase (CAT), and two EOs and eugenol had no significant effect on acetylcholinesterase (AchE) (p < 0.05). The above results suggest that the essential oils from P. racemosa and E. caryophyllata have great potential for use as alternatives to synthetic acaricides for tick control.
Behavioral Preferences of Solenopsis Invicta Buren to Essential Oils and Active Compounds from Amiaceae Plants

Abstract:The red imported fire ant (RIFA) ( Solenopsis invicta Buren) has caused serious ecological and public safety problems in invasive areas. While extensive use of pesticides to control RIFA may negatively affect human health and environment, essential oils (EOs) of Lamiaceae possessing aromatic smell and multiple biological activities are potential alternatives of chemical pesticides. In this study, we evaluated the behavioral preferences of different castes of RIFA towards the EOs from five species of Lamiaceae plants ( Salvia miltiorrhiza , Perilla frutescens , Pogostemon cablin , Schizonepeta tenusfolia, Mentha canadensis ), and then investigated the active compounds in these EOs that trigger insect behavioral preferences by gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). The results of behavioral experiment indicated that three EOs strongly altered the behavior of RIFA. Notably, all concentrations of P. frutescens EO showed a significant repellent activity on virgin queen ants, with a repellent rate of 62.50% at the lowest concentration of 2 mu g/ml. The repellent effect of S. tenusfolia EO against small worker ants reached a very significant difference between control and treatment groups, with the highest repellent rate of 85.00% observed at 1000 mu g/ml. Save for the lowest concentration 2 mu g/ml, other doses of M. canadensis EO showed a remarkable repellent effect on small worker ants, demonstrating a positive dose -effect relationship (with repellent rates of 77.50% and 65.00% at 1000 and 8 mu g/ml, respectively). A total of 39 EAD-active compounds were detected in these EOs, and 12 of them were subsequently evaluated for behavioral preferences of RIFA. Our findings indicated that six compounds (menthone, menthol, caryophyllene oxide, pulegone, 3-methylcyclopentanol, eugenol) consistently triggered behavioral preferences in worker ants. Meanwhile, six compounds, including borneol, eugenol, phenylethyl alcohol, perilla ketone, 3-methylcyclopentanol, alpha-guaiene, were found to significantly alter the behavioral selectivity of virgin queen ants. These results may help to develop application value of selected Lamiaceae plants EOs and contribute to the exploration of new green control methods for invasive pests.
