Abstract:Magnesium ferrite (MF 0.33 ) impregnated flower-shaped mesoporous ordered silica foam (MOSF) was successfully synthesized in present study. MOSF was added with precursor solution of MF 0.33 during MF 0.33 synthesis which soaked the materials and further chemical changes occurred inside the pore. Therefore, no additional synthesis process was required for magnesium ferrite impregnated mesoporous ordered silica foam (MF 0.33 -MOSF) synthesis. MF 0.33 -MOSF showed higher morphological properties compared to other magnesium ferrite modified nanomaterials and adsorbed arsenic III [As(III)] and arsenic V [As(V)] 42.80 and 39.73 mg/g respectively. These were higher than those of other Fe-modified adsorbents at pH 7. As MOSF has no adsorption capacity, MF 0.33 played key role to adsorb arsenic by MF 0.33 -MOSF. Data showed that MF 0.33 -MOSF contain about 2.5 times lower Fe and Mg than pure MF 0.33 which was affected the arsenic adsorption capacity by MF 0.33 -MOSF. Adsorption results best fitted with Freundlich isotherm model. The possible mechanism of arsenic adsorption might be chemisorption by electrostatic attraction and inner or outer-sphere surface complex formation.

Adsorptive removal of pollutants from water using magnesium ferrite nanoadsorbent: a promising future material for water purification

Abstract:Nanoadsorbents having large specific surface area, high pore volume with tunable pore size, affordability and easy magnetic separation gained much popularity in recent time. Iron-based nanoadsorbents showed higher adsorption capacity for different pollutant removal from water among other periodic elements. Spinel ferrite nanomaterials among iron-bearing adsorbent class performed better than single iron oxide and hydroxides due to their large surface area, mesoporous pore, high pore volume and stability. This work aimed at focusing on water treatment using magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanomaterials. Synthesis routes, properties and pollutant adsorption were critically investigated to explore the performance of magnesium ferrite in water treatment. Structural and surface properties were greatly affected by the factors involved in different synthesis routes and iron and magnesium ratio. Complete removal of pollutants through adsorption was achieved using magnesium ferrite. Pollutant adsorption capacity of MgFe2O4 and its modified forms was found several folds higher than Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanomaterials. In addition, MgFe2O4 showed strong stability in water than other pure iron oxide and hydroxide. Modification with graphene oxide, activated carbon, biochar and silica was demonstrated to be beneficial for enhanced adsorption capacity. Complex formation was suggested as a dominant mechanism for pollutant adsorption. These nanomaterials could be a viable and competitive adsorbent for diverse pollutant removal from water.

Abstract:The occurrence of heavy metal ions in water is intractable, and it has currently become a serious environmental issue to deal with. The effects of calcining magnesium oxide at 650 °C and the impacts on the adsorption of pentavalent arsenic from water are reported in this paper. The pore nature of a material has a direct impact on its ability to function as an adsorbent for its respective pollutant. Calcining magnesium oxide is not only beneficial in enhancing its purity but has also been proven to increase the pore size distribution. Magnesium oxide, as an exceptionally important inorganic material, has been widely studied in view of its unique surface properties, but the correlation between its surface structure and physicochemical performance is still scarce. In this paper, magnesium oxide nanoparticles calcined at 650 °C are assessed to remove the negatively charged arsenate ions from an aqueous solution. The increased pore size distribution was able to give an experimental maximum adsorption capacity of 115.27 mg/g with an adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g/L. Non-linear kinetics and isotherm models were studied to identify the adsorption process of ions onto the calcined nanoparticles. From the adsorption kinetics study, the non-linear pseudo-first order showed an effective adsorption mechanism, and the most suitable adsorption isotherm was the non-linear Freundlich isotherm. The resulting R2 values of other kinetic models, namely Webber-Morris and Elovich, were still below those of the non-linear pseudo-first-order model. The regeneration of magnesium oxide in the adsorption of negatively charged ions was determined by making comparisons between fresh and recycled adsorbent that has been treated with a 1 M NaOH solution.

Abstract:A new, easy, rapid and relatively inexpensive method using microscopy has been developed for the detection of herbicide effects in leaves of grass weed species displaying no visual signs of damage. The method has potential to be used as a tool to indicate future death of grass species due to herbicide exposure by observing phytochemical effects, i.e. early-warning effects. In the present study, Apera spica-venti (L.) Beauv., Bromus hordeaceus L., Alopecurus myosuroides Huds., Lolium perenne L. and Poa annua L. were exposed to lethal rates of four herbicides with different mode of action. The herbicides investigated were the thiocarbamate: prosulfocarb, the sulfonylurea: iodosulfuron, the aryloxyphenoxypropionate: fenoxaprop-P-ethyl and the organophosphate glyphosate. Autofluorescence of leaves was studied under a microscope using ultraviolet and blue light. The fluorescence of leaves treated to enhance flavonoids was also examined. To confirm the results, microspectrofluorometry was performed. Effects indicating future death of the grasses were observed in visually healthy leaves following treatment with prosulfocarb, glyphosate and iodosulfuron. No changes were detected following treatment with fenoxaprop-P-ethyl. After exposure to glyphosate or iodosulfuron, changes in the content of flavonoids and other compounds with a conjugation system and rigid structure and a decrease in the content of chlorophyll were detected in the leaves. Prosulfocarb treatment resulted in changes in the content of flavonoids and other compounds with a conjugation system and rigid structure and an increase in the content of chlorophyll in the leaves. The results obtained from microspectrofluorometry indicated that exposure to prosulfocarb caused a reduction in the flavonoids quercetin, naringenin and/or naringin.
Removal of Arsenic Contaminants with Magnetic Γ-Fe2o3 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles synthesized by a co-precipitation method at room temperature have been used to remove As(III) and As(V) from their aqueous solutions. The adsorption of As(III) or As(V) was found to be saturated within 30min and has been interpreted in terms of a Langmuir model at different temperatures. The adsorption capacities for As(III) reached 59.25, 67.02, and 74.83mg/g at 10, 30 and 50°C, respectively. For As(V), the adsorption capacities at these temperatures were 88.44, 95.37, and 105.25mg/g, respectively. The effects of pH and competing ions on the adsorption of arsenite and arsenate have also been examined. The adsorption capacity remained unchanged in the range of pH 3 to 11. The presence of Cl−, SO42-, and NO3- had no effect on the adsorption capacity. However, the presence of PO43-, which has a similar outer electronic structure to that of the arsenic species, led to a significant reduction in the adsorption capacity. It is concluded from FTIR and XPS analyses that chemical binding with OH on the adsorbent surface is responsible for the adsorption of As(III) and As(V). The saturated magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could be recovered by applying a magnetic field of strength greater than 0.35T. Arsenic compounds were eluted from the magnetic adsorbent following treatment with 1m NaOH, leading to regeneration of the magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The nanoparticles retained over 40% of their initial adsorption capacity for arsenic compounds after 6 cycles.
Simultaneous Removal of Arsenate and Fluoride Using Magnesium-Based Adsorbents

Abstract:In this study, arsenate, As(V), and fluoride (F) were simultaneously removed from contaminated water using MgO, Mg(OH)2, and MgCO3 as Mg-based adsorbents, as existing studies only focus on their individual removal. The removal performance of As(V) and F followed the order MgCO3 < Mg(OH)2 < MgO. Under the test conditions, MgO and Mg(OH)2 met the environmental standards for As and F (0.01 and 0.8 mg/L, respectively), but MgCO3 did not. The As(V) removal performance was not significantly affected by an increase in the initial F concentration. It was concluded that As(V) was adsorbed and removed more preferentially than F by Mg-based adsorbents because a considerable amount of F remained even when the majority of As(V) was removed. Most arsenic (As)-adsorption data for MgO fit the Langmuir and Freundlich models, whereas those for Mg(OH)2 did not fit either model well. Additionally, the As-adsorption data for MgCO3 fit the Freundlich model but not the Langmuir model. Most of the F-adsorption data for the Mg-based adsorbents fit the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The removal mechanisms of As(V) and F using Mg-based adsorbents were assumed to be predominantly caused by ion-exchange and chemical-adsorption reactions on the adsorbent surface because no magnesium arsenate, magnesium fluoride, or magnesium hydroxide fluoride species were observed in the X-ray diffraction analysis. This research advances the sustainable As–F simultaneous treatment method using inexpensive adsorbents.

Abstract:The urgent need to remove arsenic from groundwater stems from the irreversible damage it causes to aquatic systems and biological health. In this study, unique magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites derived from MIL-100(Fe)/GO precursor were rationally and precisely developed by combination of solvothermal synthesis and pyrolysis methods. The optimized MIL-100(Fe)/1%GO-400 magnetic nanocomposite (where 1% and 400 represent the mass ratio of GO to MIL-100(Fe) and pyrolysis temperature, respectively) exhibited exceptional adsorption capacity for As(V) and possessed magnetic separation properties. The novel nanocomposite had complete MOF morphology and crystal structure, as well as good resistance to interference from ions and could be used effectively over a wide pH range (2–9) for adsorption of As(V). The As(V) adsorption on the nanocomposite was found to follow the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Temkin adsorption isotherm model, as well as a spontaneous endothermic process dominated by chemisorption. The incorporation of GO and pyrolysis of the Fe-MOFs was proven to enhance the adsorption capacity of nanocomposite, water stability, and magnetic recovery ability. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effect of chemical complexation, hydrogen binding and electrostatic interaction. This work not only presents a feasible strategy for the development of Fe-MOFs-based derivatives, but also offers a promising approach to expanding the application of functional Fe-MOFs-based derivatives in arsenic-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Efficient Removal of Trace Arsenite Through Oxidation and Adsorption by Magnetic Nanoparticles Modified with Fe-Mn Binary Oxide

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) modified simultaneously with amorphous Fe and Mn oxides (Mag-Fe-Mn) were synthesized to remove arsenite [As(III)] from water. Mag-Fe-Mn particles were fabricated through heterogeneous nucleation technique by employing the maghemite as the magnetic core and Fe Mn binary oxide (FMBO) as the coating materials. Powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to characterize the hybrid material. With a saturation magnetization of 23.2 emu/g, Mag-Fe-Mn particles with size of 20 -50 nm could be easily separated from solutions with a simple magnetic process in short time (within 5 min). At pH 7.0, 200 mu g/L of As(III) could be easily decreased to below 10 mu g/L by Mag-Fe-Mn particles (0.1 g/L) within 20 min. As(III) could be effectively removed by Mag-Fe-Mn particles at initial pH range from 4 to 8 and the residual As was completely oxidized to less toxic arsenate [As(V)]. The co-occurring redox reactions between Mn oxide and As(III) was confirmed by XPS analysis. Chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, and nitrate at common concentration range had negligible influence on As(III) removal, whereas, silicate and phosphate reduced the As(III) removal by competing with arsenic species for adsorption sites. As(M) removal was not obviously affected by natural organic matter (up to 8 mg/L as TOC). Mag-Fe-Mn could be regenerated with ternary solution of NaOH, NaCl, and NaClO. Throughout five consecutive cycles, the adsorption and desorption efficiencies maintained above 98% and 87%, respectively. Mag-Fe-Mn had a larger adsorption capacity for As(III) (47.76 mg/g) and could remove trace As(III) more thoroughly than MNPs modified solely with either Fe or Mn oxide due to the synergistic effect of the coating Fe and Mn oxides. This research extended the potential applicability of FMBO to a great extent and provided a convenient approach to efficiently remove trace As(III) from water. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Influence of Phosphate on Arsenic Adsorption Behavior of Si-Fe-Mg Mixed Hydrous Oxide

Abstract:The arsenic adsorption performance of silicon (Si), iron (Fe), and magnesium (Mg) mixed hydrous oxide containing a Si: Fe: Mg metal composition ratio of 0.05:0.9:0.05 (SFM05905) was investigated. SFM05905 was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Batch experiments on arsenic adsorption were conducted at various temperatures and concentrations. Adsorption isotherms models were represented by a linearized equations and were insensitive to temperature change. The anion selectivity of SFM05905 at single component was high for arsenite (III), arsenate (V), and phosphate (PO4), indicating that PO4 inhibits arsenic adsorption. The adsorption amount of As (III), As (V), and PO4 were compared using a column packed with granular SFM05905, and an aqueous solution was passed by a combination of several anions that are single, binary, and ternary adsorbate systems. As (III) had the highest adsorption amount; however, As (III) and PO4 were affected by each other under the ternary mixing condition. Although the adsorption amount of As (V) was smaller than that of As (III), it was not affected by other adsorbates in the column experiments. Finally, although the adsorption of both arsenic continued, the adsorbed PO4 gradually desorbed.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES This paper summarizes the information on immigrant occupational health available from recent studies, incorporating varied study designs. METHODS A systematic search was carried out in PubMed employing terms of interest to the study and related terms supplied by the same search engine. Articles were selected through the following process: (i) reading the title and abstract, in English or Spanish, for the period 1990-2005, (ii) reading of the entire text of selected articles; (iii) making a manual search of the relevant citations in the selected articles; (iv) eliminating articles without a focus on the themes of central interest (immigration, work, and health), and (v) reading and analyzing the definitive article set. No quality criteria were used in the article selection. RESULTS The location of studies was not straightforward and required careful thought about the search terms. The included 48 papers were often multifaceted and difficult to categorize. They generally came from countries historically associated with immigration and described occupational risk factors, health consequences, and the social, economic, and cultural influences on worker health. The authors of the studies highlighted the fact that the data were limited and that the [corrected] surveillance, training, and preventive measures used among these populations [corrected] were inadequate. CONCLUSIONS Increased migration is a reality in industrialized countries all over the world, and it has social, political, and economic consequences for migrating groups, as well as for their sending and host societies. More reliable data, targeted appropriate interventions, and enforcement of existing regulations are necessary to improve the health of immigrant workers. Furthermore, studies in sending and developing countries should be encouraged to form a more complete understanding of this complex situation.
Adsorption behavior and mechanism of different arsenic species on mesoporous MnFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Arsenic pollution poses severe threat to human health, therefore dealing with the problem of arsenic contamination in water bodies is extremely important. The adsorption behaviors of different arsenic species, such as arsenate (As(V)), p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA), roxarsone (ROX), dimethylarsenate (DMA) from water using mesoporous bimetal oxide magnetic manganese ferrite nanoparticles (MnFeO) have been detailedly investigated. The adsorbent was synthesized via a facile co-precipitation approach and recovered conveniently owing to its strong magnetic properties. The obtained MnFeO with large surface area and abundant hydroxyly functional groups exhibited excellent adsorption performance for As(V) and p-ASA, in contrast to ROX and DMA with the maximum adsorption capacities of As(V), p-ASA, ROX and DMA of 68.25 mg g, 59.45 mg g, 51.49 mg g, and 35.77 mg g, respectively. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model correlated satisfactorily with the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters depicted the spontaneous endothermic nature for the adsorption of different arsenic species. The adsorption mechanism of different arsenic species onto MnFeO nanoparticles at various pH values could be explained by surface complexation and molecular structural variations. Attenuated Total internal Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further proved that arsenic species were bonded to the surface of MnFeO through the formation of an inner-sphere complex between the arsenic acid moiety and surface metal centers. The results would help to know the interaction of arsenic species with iron-manganese minerals and the mobility of arsenic species in natural environments.

Abstract:Abstract In this work the adsorption features of activated carbon and the magnetic properties of iron oxides were combined in a composite to produce magnetic adsorbent. Batch experiments were conducted to study the adsorption behavior of arsenate onto the synthetic magnetic adsorbent. The effects of initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and co-existing anionic component on the adsorption of arsenate were investigated. The results showed that the removal percentage of arsenate could be over 95% in the conditions of adsorbent dosage 5.0 g/L, initial solution pH 3.0-8.0, and contact time 1 h. Under the experimental conditions, phosphate and silicate caused greater decrease in arsenate removal percentage among the anions, and sulfate had almost no effect on the adsorption of arsenate. Kinetics study showed that the overall adsorption rate of arsenate was illustrated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The applicability of the Langmuir and Freundlich models for the arsenate adsorption data was tested. Both the models adequately describe the experimental data. Moreover, the magnetic composite adsorbent could be easily recovered from the medium by an external magnetic field. It can therefore be potentially applied for the treatment of water contaminated by arsenate.

Abstract:Arsenic in water is currently a global concern due to the long-term exposure that could affect human health. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), CoFe2O4, and MnFe2O4 were successfully synthesized and applied to remove arsenic (As) from water. The MNPs were characterized using different techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET), and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nanoscale size and the specific surface area achieved a fast, selective, and high As adsorption capacity. MNPs have a mesoporous structure with a mean pore diameter of 5 nm and a mean particle size of 30 nm. The adsorption capacity of these MNPs was determined through kinetic and equilibrium experiments, multilayer adsorption that obeyed the Freundlich model equation was observed, and the maximum adsorption capacities reached were 250 mg/g for CoFe2O4 and 230 mg/g for MnFe2O4. Furthermore, MNPs characteristics like regeneration and reuse, several pH tolerances, non-ion interference, and effective As removal from groundwater samples confirms the nanomaterials’ potential for future applications in water treatment systems combined with magnetic separation.

Abstract:This study proposes a process consisting of in situ precipitated ferric and manganese binary oxides (FMBO) adsorption, sand filtration, and ultra-filtration (UF) for arsenic removal. Bench scale studies indicate that the FMBO shows higher capability of removing arsenic than hydrous ferric precipitate (HFO) and hydrous manganese oxide (HMO). This is ascribed to the combined effects of oxidizing As(III) and adsorbing As(V) for FMBO. The continuous experiments indicate that this process is effective for arsenic removal. In the presence of 0.624mg/L As(III), when the Fe(II) dosage is 3mg/L and the KMnO4 dosage is equivalent to the sum of As(III) and Fe(II), the residual As concentration is as low as 29.2μg/L. The adsorption of arsenic onto FMBO is fast, and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 45s is enough for the adsorption unit. Sand filtration leads to more than 90% of arsenic removal, and UF further removes the particulate arsenic that passes through the sand filter. During the backwashing of the sand filter, the maximal aqueous arsenic concentration is 0.105mg/L (at 150s), and the dissolution of arsenic from FMBO is neglectable. The main operating cost of this process is as low as 0.355RMB/m3, which is acceptable in rural areas for arsenic removal in engineering.

Abstract:Iron-manganese binary oxides (FeMnOx) can remove contaminants from aqueous solutions with high efficiency, and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) is widely used as a supporting material due to its large specific surface area and good stability. In this study, SBA-15 was used to support FeMnOx in the synthesis of a novel arsenic (As) adsorbent (FeMnOx/SBA-15), and its characteristics under different reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, presence of competing ions, and humic acid, were tested. The results showed that the contaminant adsorption efficiency of the novel adsorbent was better than that of bare FeMnOx, as the addition of SBA-15 decreased the agglomeration effect of FeMnOx. Additionally, FeMnOx/SBA-15 underwent calcination to further enhance its performance. The state of iron and manganese in FeMnOx/SBA-15 and the corresponding arsenic removal efficiency were improved by calcination at 350 degrees C with an FeMnOx/SBA-15 mass fraction of approximately 45%. Almost 90% of As (50 mL, 5.0 mg L-1) could be removed by 0.2 g L-1 of FeMnOx/SBA-15 (mass ratio of 45% and calcination temperature of 350 degrees C). The FeMnOx/SBA-15 could regenerate and still be used after four consecutive cycles. The high As sorption capacity, ability to regenerate, and reusability of FeMnOx/SBA-15 confirmed that this adsorbent is promising for treating As-contaminated drinking water.

Abstract:Arsenic is an extremely toxic metalloid. The majority of arsenic water pollution originates from industrial activities such as mining, smelting, and utilization of arsenic compounds in glass, pigment, semiconductor, and other industries. Arsenic-containing wastewater poses a threat to groundwater, freshwater, seawater, and soil. Bioaccumulation of arsenic as a result of accidental ingestion may have a harmful effect on the skin and cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, thereby posing a major health risk. Chemical coagulation, membrane filtration, and adsorption can be used to treat arsenic-containing wastewater. However, chemical coagulation produces a large amount of waste sludge, which is harmful and incurs high processing costs. Membrane filtration is difficult to adopt because of its high operation and maintenance costs. Adsorption is an inexpensive, easy-to-use, sludge-free water treatment method that enables adsorbent recycling. These characteristics make adsorption an economically feasible technique for water treatment. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are small particles with a high surface area to volume ratio. Their strong magnetic properties enable them to absorb specific water pollutants. MNPs are currently used as water treatment adsorbents. However, they have several drawbacks, including low acid and alkali buffer capacity and water oxidation. In this study, MNPs immobilized with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) were used to enhance the efficacy of wastewater treatment with magnetic materials. These modified MNPs exhibited magnetic characteristics and improved acid resistance. When 100 g/L PVA/SA-MNPs (pH 1–6) were stirred at 120 rpm for 30 min, the resulting iron concentration of the water was 16 mg/L. By contrast, the MNPs released iron in levels ranging from 18 to 4,045 mg/L. The PVA/SA–MNPs efficiently adsorbed arsenic in the pH range 3–6, with a high removal efficiency of 76% to 82%. At pH 5, the average adsorption capacity was 382 ± 27 μg/g. To recover the MNPs, they were rinsed with deionized water and immersed in acid three times, after which their adsorption capacity was 300 μg/g or higher. By contrast, the PVA/SA-MNPs could be recovered through spontaneous sedimentation, eliminating the need for a magnetic field and simplifying the collection process. In addition, iron dissolution in acidic solutions was minimized for the PVA/SA-MNPs, contributing to environmental protection.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Arsenic contamination can exert severe detrimental effects on the ecological environment and human health. It can cause acute or chronic poisoning, resulting in cell distortion or cancer when humans come into contact with or consume arsenic‐containing water. Adsorption technology is one of the effective methods for arsenic removal. In this study, using attapulgite (ATP) as a support for bimetallic iron–manganese oxides, a series of adsorbents (Fe‐Mn/ATP) with different manganese‐to‐iron molar ratios were prepared via the coprecipitation method. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy mapping, X‐ray diffraction and zeta potential measurements were used to analyze the structure and properties of Fe‐Mn/ATP. In addition, the adsorption performance of the material for arsenic ions was investigated by static adsorption and dynamic adsorption experiments. RESULTS A novel Fe‐Mn/ATP adsorbent was prepared using ATP as the raw material and manganese‐to‐iron molar ratio was 1:3 by coprecipitation at 60 °C for 1 h. The adsorption efficiency of arsenic ions was optimal at an Fe‐Mn/ATP dosage of 2 g L−1, pH 4 and a contact time of 10 min, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 38.27 mg g−1 at room temperature. The adsorption process followed the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model, indicating that arsenic ion adsorption by Fe‐Mn/ATP was mainly monolayer chemical adsorption. Furthermore, Fe‐Mn/ATP showed a removal rate for arsenic ions of over 80% after four cycles of regeneration, revealing a great potential for practical application. CONCLUSION This study offers a promising Fe‐Mn/ATP adsorbent for removal of arsenic ions from wastewater. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:Recent progress in nanotechnology has resulted in numerous nanoscale structures and devices with exceptional chemical, physical and biological properties and functions. In this study, we developed an ordered nano-structured adsorbent, iron-containing ordered mesoporous carbon (FeOMC), for arsenic adsorption from water. FeOMC preparation involved in synthesis of ordered silica template SBA-15, in situ polymerization of mono acrylic acid (AA) in the silica template followed by carbonization and template removal to obtain ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), and iron impregnation. Sample characterizations by transmission electron microcopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption indicated that the prepared OMC and FeOMC had an ordered mesoporous structure with high specific surface area of 607m2/g and 466m2/g, respectively. Arsenic adsorption experiments showed that the maximum arsenic adsorption was primarily controlled by the amount of iron impregnated, and the molar ratio of iron and the maximum amount of arsenate adsorption was 5.53–7.97. The optimal pH values for adsorption depended on arsenic species: at an initial concentration of 9.98mg/L arsenic, the optimal pH range was 3.0–7.0 for arsenate removal and 6.0–9.5 for arsenite. The rate of arsenic removal by FeOMC was high, suggesting that it could be potentially applied in point-of-use systems where fast adsorption kinetics is needed.

Abstract:It is challenging to separate the materials for treating arsenic contamination of soil and water from systems. The natural magnetite covered with Fe–Mn bimetallic (oxyhydr)oxide (Fe–Mn MSM) was effectively created in this study, and its potential use in removing As from water and soil was investigated. Batch adsorption studies showed that the As(V) adsorption on Fe–Mn MSM could achieve equilibrium after 120 min when the initial As(V) concentration was 39.85 mg/L. The calculated maximum adsorption of Fe–Mn MSM for As(V) was 17.94 mg/g at 20 °C. The mechanism of As(V) adsorption was confirmed to be a combination of ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction by the outcomes of FTIR analysis, SEM, and batch adsorption tests. Fe–Mn MSM can also be a successful amendment for cleaning up As-polluted soil. The 5% Fe–Mn MSM treatment group had the lowest exchangeable fraction of As (EX-As) concentration, 0.039 mg/kg (8.3% of initial EX-As), after 40 days. Magnetic separation could be used to quickly and completely recover the used Fe–Mn MSM from the soil. EX-As was present in higher concentrations on Fe–Mn MSM than that of the original soil. As a result, this work offers a strategy that may be put into practice to cheaply remove As from soil and water while also encouraging the reuse of natural magnetite.

Abstract:Two types of adsorbents, arginine (Arg) and lysine (Lys) modified Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Arg-MNPs and Lys-MNPs), were synthesized by employing conventional co-precipitation process and used to remove trace arsenate [As(V)] from water. Various techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction, Föurier transform infra-red spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis were utilized to characterize the synthesized adsorbents. TEM images showed that both fabricated materials were spherical with diameter of approximately 10nm. With saturation magnetization of around 73.0emu/g, both adsorbents could be easily separated from water with a simple magnetic process in 5min. The As(V) adsorption capacities of Arg-MNPs and Lys-MNPs were 29.14 and 23.86mg/g, respectively, which were twice larger than that of bare MNPs (12.12mg/g). Both adsorbents (0.1g/L) could remove over 90% of As(V) (100μg/L) from water over a wide pH range from 3 to 9. Moreover, natural organic matters (humic acid and alginate) and competitive anions including sulfate, bicarbonate, silicate, and phosphate did not obviously affect the adsorption of As(V) by the modified adsorbents. The removal of As(V) maintained above 83% even with extremely high concentration of phosphate (50mg/L). As(V) could also be effectively removed from challenge water and real river water by the modified adsorbents. Both magnetic particles could be easily regenerated in alkali solutions and their adsorption capacities were still greater than 10mg/g even in the fifth cycle.
