Abstract:The accurate segmentation of brain tumor is significant in clinical practice. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based methods have made great progress in brain tumor segmentation due to powerful local modeling ability. However, brain tumors are frequently pattern-agnostic, i.e. variable in shape, size and location, which can not be effectively matched by traditional CNN-based methods with local and regular receptive fields. To address the above issues, we propose a shape-scale co-awareness network (S2CA-Net) for brain tumor segmentation, which can efficiently learn shape-aware and scale-aware features simultaneously to enhance pattern-agnostic representations. Primarily, three key components are proposed to accomplish the co-awareness of shape and scale. The Local-Global Scale Mixer (LGSM) decouples the extraction of local and global context by adopting the CNN-Former parallel structure, which contributes to obtaining finer hierarchical features. The Multi-level Context Aggregator (MCA) enriches the scale diversity of input patches by modeling global features across multiple receptive fields. The Multi-Scale Attentive Deformable Convolution (MS-ADC) learns the target deformation based on the multiscale inputs, which motivates the network to enforce feature constraints both in terms of scale and shape for optimal feature matching. Overall, LGSM and MCA focus on enhancing the scale-awareness of the network to cope with the size and location variations, while MS-ADC focuses on capturing deformation information for optimal shape matching. Finally, their effective integration prompts the network to perceive variations in shape and scale simultaneously, which can robustly tackle the variations in patterns of brain tumors. The experimental results on BraTS 2019, BraTS 2020, MSD BTS Task and BraTS2023-MEN show that S2CA-Net has superior overall performance in accuracy and efficiency compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Abstract:Accurate brain tumor segmentation is an essential step for clinical diagnosis and surgical treatment. Multimodal brain tumor segmentation strongly relies on an effective fusion method and an excellent segmentation network. However, it is common to have some missing MR modalities in clinical scenarios due to image corruption, acquisition protocol, scanner availability and scanning cost, which can heavily decrease the tumor segmentation accuracy, and also cause information loss for down-streaming disease analysis. To address this issue, I propose a novel multimodal feature fusion and latent feature learning guided deep neural network. On the one hand, the proposed network can help to segment brain tumors when one or more modalities are missing. On the other hand, it can retrieve the missing modalities to compensate for incomplete data. The proposed network consists of three key components. First, a Multimodal Feature Fusion Module (MFFM) is proposed to effectively fuse the complementary information from different modalities, consisting of a Cross-Modality Fusion Module (CMFM) and a Multi-Scale Fusion Module (MSFM). Second, a Spatial Consistency-based Latent Feature Learning Module (SC-LFLM) is presented to exploit multimodal latent correlation and extract the relevant features to benefit segmentation. Third, the Multi-Task Learning (MTL) paths are integrated to supervise the segmentation and recover the missing modalities. The proposed method is evaluated on BraTS 2018 dataset, and it can achieve superior segmentation results when one or more modalities are missing, compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the proposed modules can be easily adapted to other multimodal network architectures and research fields.

SF-Net: A Multi-Task Model for Brain Tumor Segmentation in Multimodal MRI via Image Fusion

Abstract:Automatic segmentation of brain tumor regions from multimodal MRI scans is of great clinical significance. In this letter, we propose a “Segmentation-Fusion” multi-task model named SF-Net for brain tumor segmentation. In comparison to the widely-used multi-task model that adds a variational autoencoder (VAE) decoder to reconstruct the input data, using image fusion as an additional regularization for feature learning helps to achieve more sufficient fusion of multimodal features, which is beneficial to the multimodal image segmentation problem. To further improve the performance of the multi-task model, an uncertainty-based approach that can adaptively adjust the loss weights of different tasks during the training process is introduced for model training. Experimental results on the BraTS 2020 benchmark demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve higher segmentation accuracy than the VAE-based approach. In addition, as the by-product of the multi-task model, the image fusion results obtained are of high quality on the brain tumor regions. MFD-Net: Modality Fusion Diffractive Network for Segmentation of Multimodal Brain Tumor Image

Abstract:Automatic brain tumor segmentation using multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) holds substantial importance for brain diagnosis, monitoring, and therapeutic strategy planning. Given the constraints inherent to manual segmentation, adopting deep learning networks for accomplishing accurate and automated segmentation emerges as an essential advancement. In this article, we propose a modality fusion diffractive network (MFD-Net) composed of diffractive blocks and modality feature extractors for the automatic and accurate segmentation of brain tumors. The diffractive block, designed based on Fraunhofer's single-slit diffraction principle, emphasizes neighboring high-confidence feature points and suppresses low-quality or isolated feature points, enhancing the interrelation of features. Adopting a global passive reception mode overcomes the issue of fixed receptive fields. Through a self-supervised approach, the modality feature extractor effectively utilizes the inherent generalization information of each modality, enabling the main segmentation branch to focus more on multimodal fusion feature information. We apply the diffractive block on nn-UNet in the MICCAI BraTS 2022 challenge, ranked first in the pediatric population data and third in the BraTS continuous evaluation data, proving the superior generalizability of our network. We also train separately on the BraTS 2018, 2019, and 2021 datasets. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Brain tumor segmentation in multimodal MRI volumes is of great significance to disease diagnosis, treatment planning, survival prediction and other relevant tasks. However, most existing brain tumor segmentation methods fail to make sufficient use of multimodal information. The most common way is to simply stack the original multimodal images or their low-level features as the model input, and many methods treat each modality data with equal importance to a given segmentation target. In this paper, we introduce multimodal image fusion technique including both pixel-level fusion and feature-level fusion for brain tumor segmentation, aiming to achieve more sufficient and finer utilization of multimodal information. At the pixel level, we present a convolutional network named PIF-Net for 3D MR image fusion to enrich the input modalities of the segmentation model. The fused modalities can strengthen the association among different types of pathological information captured by multiple source modalities, leading to a modality enhancement effect. At the feature level, we design an attention-based modality selection feature fusion (MSFF) module for multimodal feature refinement to address the difference among multiple modalities for a given segmentation target. A two-stage brain tumor segmentation framework is accordingly proposed based on the above components and the popular V-Net model. Experiments are conducted on the BraTS 2019 and BraTS 2020 benchmarks. The results demonstrate that the proposed components on both pixel-level and feature-level fusion can effectively improve the segmentation accuracy of brain tumors.

Abstract:Brain tumors are highly hazardous, and precise automated segmentation of brain tumor subregions has great importance and research significance on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Rapid advances in deep learning make accurate and efficient automatic segmentation more possible, but there are challenges. In this paper, an efficient 3D segmentation model (DPAFNet) based on dual-path (DP) module and multi-scale attention fusion (MAF) module is proposed. In DPAFNet, the dual path convolution is applied to broaden the network scale and residual connection is introduced to avoid network degradation. An attention fusion module is proposed to aggregate channel level global and local information, in which feature maps of different scales are fused to obtain features that are enriched in semantic information. This makes the object information of small tumors get full attention. Furthermore, the 3D iterative dilated convolution merging (IDCM) module expands the receptive field and improves the ability of context awareness. Ablation experiments verify the optimal combination of dilation rate for the dilated convolution merging module and demonstrate the enhancement of segmentation accuracy due to the post-processing method. Comparative experiments of this study on BraTS2018, BraTS2019 and BraTS2020 are promising and provide a promising precision and Dice score compared to related work. The proposed DPAFNet achieves Dice score of 79.5%, 90.0% and 83.9% in the enhancing tumor, whole tumor and tumor core on BraTS2018, respectively. On BraTS2019, it achieves Dice score of 78.2%, 89.0% and 81.2% in the enhancing tumor, whole tumor and tumor core, respectively.

Abstract:Brain tumor segmentation from Magnetic Resonance Imaging is essential for early diagnosis and treatment planning for brain cancers in clinical practice. However, existing brain tumor segmentation methods cannot sufficiently learn high-quality feature information for segmentation. To address this issue, a modality-level cross-connection and attentional feature fusion based deep neural network is proposed for multi-modal brain tumor segmentation. The proposed method can not only locate the whole tumor region but also can accurately segment the sub-tumor regions. The proposed network architecture is a multi-encoder based 3D U-Net. Inspired by the characteristics of multi-modalities, a modality-level cross-connection (MCC) is first proposed to take advantage of the complementary information between the related modalities. Moreover, to enhance the feature learning capacity of the network, the attentional feature fusion module (AFFM) is proposed to fuse the multi-modalities as well as to extract the useful feature representation for segmentation. It consists of two components: multi-scale spatial feature fusion (MSFF) block and dual-path channel feature fusion (DCFF) block. They aim at learning multi-scale spatial contextual information and the channel-wise feature information to improve the segmentation accuracy. Also, the proposed fusion module can be easily integrated into other fusion models and deep neural network architectures. Comprehensive experiments evaluated on the BraTS 2018 dataset demonstrate that the proposed network architecture can effectively improve the brain tumor segmentation performance when compared with the baseline methods and the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Delineating the brain tumor from magnetic resonance (MR) images is critical for the treatment of gliomas. However, automatic delineation is challenging due to the complex appearance and ambiguous outlines of tumors. Considering that multi-modal MR images can reflect different tumor biological properties, we develop a novel multi-modal tumor segmentation network (MMTSN) to robustly segment brain tumors based on multi-modal MR images. The MMTSN is composed of three sub-branches and a main branch. Specifically, the sub-branches are used to capture different tumor features from multi-modal images, while in the main branch, we design a spatial-channel fusion block (SCFB) to effectively aggregate multi-modal features. Additionally, inspired by the fact that the spatial relationship between sub-regions of tumor is relatively fixed, e.g., the enhancing tumor is always in the tumor core, we propose a spatial loss to constrain the relationship between different sub-regions of tumor. We evaluate our method on the test set of multi-modal brain tumor segmentation challenge 2020 (BraTs2020). The method achieves 0.8764, 0.8243 and 0.773 dice score for whole tumor, tumor core and enhancing tumor, respectively.
MLRD-Net: 3D multiscale local cross-channel residual denoising network for MRI-based brain tumor segmentation

Abstract:The precise segmentation of multimodal MRI images is the primary stage of tumor diagnosis and treatment. Current segmentation strategies often underutilize multiscale features, which can easily lead to loss of contextual information, reduction of low-level features and noise interference. To overcome these issues, a 3D multiscale local cross-channel residual denoising network (MLRD-Net) for an MRI-based brain tumor segmentation algorithm is proposed in this paper. Specifically, we employ encoder-decoder structure to connect local and global features, and enhance the receptive field of the network. Random slice operation has been conducted to enhance robustness. Then, residual blocks with pre-activation operation are developed in down-sampling stage, which effectively improves signal propagation along the network and alleviates network overfitting. Finally, the local cross-channel denoising mechanism is established to eliminate unimportant features without dimensionality reduction. Our proposal was evaluated in Brain Tumor Segmentation 2020 dataset (BraTS 2020), obtaining significantly improved results with mean Dice Similarity Coefficient metric of 0.91, 0.79, and 0.73 for the complete, tumor core, and enhancing tumor regions respectively. Besides, we conduct further practice on BraTS 2019, with the mean Dice Similarity Coefficient metric of 0.89, 0.80, and 0.75. Massive experiments demonstrate that our method is powerful and reliable. It increases little model complexity while achieving very competitive performance.

Abstract:Multi-modal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides great potential for diagnosing and analyzing brain gliomas. In clinical scenarios, common MR sequences such as T1, T2 and FLAIR can be obtained simultaneously in a single scanning process. However, acquiring contrast enhanced modalities such as T1ce requires additional time, cost, and injection of contrast agent. As such, it is clinically meaningful to develop a method to synthesize unavailable modalities which can also be used as additional inputs to downstream tasks (e.g., brain tumor segmentation) for performance enhancing. In this work, we propose an end-to-end framework named Modality-Level Attention Fusion Network (MAF-Net), wherein we innovatively conduct patchwise contrastive learning for extracting multi-modal latent features and dynamically assigning attention weights to fuse different modalities. Through extensive experiments on BraTS2020, our proposed MAF-Net is found to yield superior T1ce synthesis performance (SSIM of 0.8879 and PSNR of 22.78) and accurate brain tumor segmentation (mean Dice scores of 67.9%, 41.8% and 88.0% on segmenting the tumor core, enhancing tumor and whole tumor).
SARFNet: Selective Layer and Axial Receptive Field Network for Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation

Abstract:Efficient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) segmentation, which is helpful for treatment planning, is essential for identifying brain tumors from detailed images. In recent years, various convolutional neural network (CNN) structures have been introduced for brain tumor segmentation tasks and have performed well. However, the downsampling blocks of most existing methods are typically used only for processing the variation in image sizes and lack sufficient capacity for further extraction features. We, therefore, propose SARFNet, a method based on UNet architecture, which consists of the proposed SLiRF module and advanced AAM module. The SLiRF downsampling module can extract feature information and prevent the loss of important information while reducing the image size. The AAM block, incorporated into the bottleneck layer, captures more contextual information. The Channel Attention Module (CAM) is introduced into skip connections to enhance the connections between channel features to improve accuracy and produce better feature expression. Ultimately, deep supervision is utilized in the decoder layer to avoid vanishing gradients and generate better feature representations. Many experiments were performed to validate the effectiveness of our model on the BraTS2018 dataset. SARFNet achieved Dice coefficient scores of 90.40, 85.54, and 82.15 for the whole tumor (WT), tumor core (TC), and enhancing tumor (ET), respectively. The results show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance compared with twelve or more benchmarks.
MM-UNet: A multimodality brain tumor segmentation network in MRI images

Abstract:The global annual incidence of brain tumors is approximately seven out of 100,000, accounting for 2% of all tumors. The mortality rate ranks first among children under 12 and 10th among adults. Therefore, the localization and segmentation of brain tumor images constitute an active field of medical research. The traditional manual segmentation method is time-consuming, laborious, and subjective. In addition, the information provided by a single-image modality is often limited and cannot meet the needs of clinical application. Therefore, in this study, we developed a multimodality feature fusion network, MM-UNet, for brain tumor segmentation by adopting a multi-encoder and single-decoder structure. In the proposed network, each encoder independently extracts low-level features from the corresponding imaging modality, and the hybrid attention block strengthens the features. After fusion with the high-level semantic of the decoder path through skip connection, the decoder restores the pixel-level segmentation results. We evaluated the performance of the proposed model on the BraTS 2020 dataset. MM-UNet achieved the mean Dice score of 79.2% and mean Hausdorff distance of 8.466, which is a consistent performance improvement over the U-Net, Attention U-Net, and ResUNet baseline models and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:For multimodal magnetic resonance (MR) brain tumor segmentation, current methods usually directly extract the discriminative features from input images for the tumor subregion category. However, information aliasing caused by the mutual inclusion of tumor subregions is often ignored. Moreover, existing methods usually do not take tailored efforts to highlight the single tumor subregion features. To this end, a multimodal MR brain tumor segmentation method with tumor prototype-driven and multiexpert integration is proposed. It could highlight the features of each tumor subregion under the guidance of tumor prototypes. Specifically, to obtain the prototypes with complete information, we propose a mutual transmission mechanism to transfer different modal features to each other. Furthermore, we devise a prototype-driven feature representation and fusion (PFRF) method, which implants the learned prototypes into tumor features and generates corresponding activation maps. With the activation maps, the subregion features consistent with the prototype category can be highlighted. A key information enhancement and fusion strategy with multiexpert integration is designed to further improve the segmentation performance. The strategy can integrate the features from different layers of the extra feature extraction network and the features highlighted by the prototypes. Segmentation of Brain Gliomas Based on a Multi-modal Multi-scale Double-pathway 3D Residual CNN

Abstract:Background: The automated segmentation of brain gliomas regions in magnetic resonance (MR) images plays an important role in the early diagnosis, intraoperative navigation, radiotherapy planning and prognosis of brain tumors. It is very challenging to segment gliomas and intratumoral structures since the location, size, shape, edema range and boundary of gliomas are heterogeneous, and multimodal brain gliomas images (such as T1, T2, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), and T1c images) are collected from multiple radiation centers. Methods: This paper presents a multimodal, multi-scale, double-pathway, 3D residual convolution neural network (CNN) for automatic gliomas segmentation. First, a robust gray-level normalization method is proposed to solve the multicenter problem, such as very different intensity ranges due to different imaging protocols. Second, a multi-scale, double-pathway network based on DeepMedic toolkit is trained with different combinations of multimodal MR images for gliomas segmentation. Finally, a fully connected conditional random field (CRF) is used as a post-processing strategy to optimize the segmentation results for addressing the isolated segmentations and holes. Results: Experiments on the Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) 2017 and 2019 challenge data show that our methods achieve a good performance in delineating the whole tumor with a Dice coefficient, a sensitivity and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 0.88, 0.89 and 0.88, respectively. Regarding the segmentation of the tumor core and the enhancing area, the sensitivity reached 0.80. Conclusions: Experiments show that our method can accurately segment gliomas and intratumoral structures from multimodal MR images, and it is of great significance to clinical neurosurgery.

Abstract:Brain tumor segmentation using MRI remains a challenging task due to the high incidence and complexity of gliomas. The irregular variations in tumor location, size, shape, and unclear edge contours of diverse tumor categories contribute to subpar segmentation accuracy. To address these issues, we propose MVSI-Net, a novel MRI brain tumor segmentation method that integrates a multi-view attention mechanism and multi-scale feature interaction into the UNet architecture. Our approach proposes a multi-view attention mechanism that captures global and local features from three different perspectives: channel, content, and position. This mechanism facilitates the localization of the target region and enhances feature representation in lesion areas. Additionally, we design a multi-scale feature interaction module that selectively extracts valuable information from multiple receptive fields of varying sizes, promoting cross-dimensional interaction. As a result, our method enables precise segmentation of the edge contours of different tumor categories. To evaluate the performance of MVSI-Net, we conducted experiments on three widely used datasets: BraTs 2019, BraTs 2020, and BraTs 2021. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms similar approaches in brain tumor segmentation accuracy. In conclusion, our study presents a novel and effective MRI brain tumor segmentation method that addresses the challenges posed by gliomas. However, our model still has certain limitations. Firstly, the model has not been applied in clinical experiments, and there may be challenges in terms of accuracy in certain complex cases. Secondly, further exploration is required to assess the model's generalization capability beyond specific medical image datasets. Moving forward, we plan to address these limitations in future research.

Abstract:Nutrition information and intake data for a sample of U.S. household meal planners are used to estimate the effects of fiber-specific information on dietary fiber intake. The information variables are measured using survey questions on fiber content of foods, attitude toward consuming fiber-rich foods, and awareness of fiber-health links. The evidence confirms the influence of nutrition information on fiber intake. Household income, meal planner age, smoking status, vegetarian status, race, and ethnicity are major determinants of both information and intake. Segmentation of Gliomas Based on a Double-Pathway Residual Convolution Neural Network Using Multi-Modality Information

Abstract:The automatic segmentation of brain tumors in magnetic resonance (MR) images is very important in the diagnosis, radiotherapy planning, surgical navigation and several other clinical processes. As the location, size, shape, boundary of gliomas are heterogeneous, segmenting gliomas and intratumoral structures is very difficult. Besides, the multi-center issue makes it more challenging that multimodal brain gliomas images (such as T1, T2, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), and Tic images) are from different radiation centers. This paper presents a multimodal, multi-scale, double-pathway, 3D residual convolution neural network (CNN) for automatic gliomas segmentation. In the pre-processing step, a robust gray-level normalization method is proposed to solve the multi-center problem, that the intensity range from deferent centers varies a lot. Then, a double-pathway 3D architecture based on DeepMedic toolkit is trained using multi-modality information to fuse the local and context features. In the post-processing step, a fully connected conditional random field (CRF) is built to improve the performance, filling and connecting the isolated segmentations and holes. Experiments on the Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation (BRATS) 2017 and 2019 dataset showed that this methods can delineate the whole tumor with a Dice coefficient, a sensitivity and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 0.88, 0.89 and 0.88, respectively. As for the segmentation of the tumor core and the enhancing area, the sensitivity reached 0.80. The results indicated that this method can segment gliomas and intratumoral structures from multimodal MR images accurately, and it possesses a clinical practice value.

Abstract:ABSTRACT It was the aim of this study to develop mucoadhesive microparticulate delivery systems based on thiomers and to investigate parameters influencing their mucoadhesive properties. Microparticles were prepared via coazervation of thiolated or unmodified polycarbophil with fluorescein-diacetate as marker. The protective effect of the polymers toward enzymatic hydrolysis by intestinal enzymes was investigated. Mucoadhesion studies with microparticles, applied in dry and prehydrated form, were performed by ascertaining their residence time on intestinal mucosa. Furthermore, the influence of the amount of thiol groups on mucoadhesion was studied in vitro. Results showed that in comparison to unmodified polycarbophil, thiolated polycarbophil provided a more than 3-fold higher protective effect for the incorporated marker fluorescein-diacetate toward hydrolysis. When being applied in dry form 23.4 ± 4.8% of the fluorescence marker being embedded in thiomer microparticles remained adhering to the intestinal mucosa within 3 h. In contrast, only 11.6 ± 2.0% of the marker remained on the mucosa, when the thiomer microparticles were applied in prehydrated form. In addition, tests performed to assess the impact of the amount of thiol groups pointed out that a high amount of thiol groups is advantageous in order to further improve mucoadhesive properties. This knowledge should contribute to the design of highly efficient drug delivery systems being based on thiomer microparticles.

Abstract:Abstract Preoperative Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) brain tumor diagnosis is an effective technical approach. To accurately segment tumor regions, we propose a novel brain tumor segmentation method based on improved Spatial Attention mechanism and Multi-path neural network (SAMPU-Net). Firstly, we propose a multipath input method to extract feature information of different scales by using convolution kernels of different sizes, so as to fully extract MRI feature information. Secondly, we improve the spatial attention mechanism by adding convolution layer of pyramid structure to it to obtain the features of different receptive fields. In the convolution layer of this pyramid structure, the larger the convolution kernel is, the more global features will be extracted; conversely, the smaller the convolution kernel is, the more local features will be extracted. Thirdly, we use more multi-mode MRI information to segment the brain tumor images. In practical application, due to the fuzzy tumor regions in some MRIs, we use the method of restricted contrast adaptive histogram equalization to perform local enhancement of images. The proposed model and several other mainstream segmentation methods are trained and tested on the BraTS2019 public dataset. Experimental results indicate that using our method, the Dice coefficient of tumor core and tumor enhancement region is increased by 2.4% and 1.3% respectively, and our proposed method has better segmentation effect than other methods.
