Abstract:A series of five-coordinated 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl Cu(II) complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C(5)H(3)N-CuCl(2)center dot nCH(3)CN] (Ar = 4-MeC(6)H(4), n = 0.5, Cu1; Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3), n = 1, Cu2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), n = 1, Cu3; Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), n = 0, Cu4; Ar = 2-MeC(6)H(4), n = 1, Cu5), were synthesized in acetonitrile by reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridine ligands with CuCl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively. The structures of five complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the metal center is tridentately chelated by ligand and further coordinated by two chlorine atoms, resulting in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry for Cu1, Cu3, Cu4, and Cu5, respectively, and approximately square-pyramidal geometry for Cu2. At 298 K in dichloromethane solution, all complexes exhibit blue-green luminescent emissions at about 478-499 nm, which could be attributed to ligand-centered pi* -> pi transitions. However, fluorescent emission of complexes Cu1-Cu5 is significantly weaker than those of ligands, which could be attributed to fluorophore-quencher interactions via paramagnetic Cu(II) center. Abstract:The 1 : 2 M-ratio reaction between cuprous bromide and pyrazole derivatives in toluene results in mononuclear Cu(I) complexes [CuBr(pyrazole)(2)]. The complexes have been characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The molecular structure, established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, features a trigonal planar geometry around copper, with monodentate pyrazole derivatives. All the Cu(I) complexes are luminescent in the solid state at ambient temperature. Intense blue or blue-green emission in the solid state is observed for these complexes, with the maxima ranging from 431 to 493 nm. The observed photoluminescence could be ascribed to the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states, probably mixed with some halide-to-ligand character. The microsecond lifetime scale of the complexes implies that these transitions arise from the triplet excited states.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:The weakly coordinating cluster [CB11 H12 ]- is used as a versatile building block for the preparation of luminescent copper(I) complexes. Treatment of [CB11 H11 -12-C≡CH]- with CuI and ammonia affords {(CB11 H11 -12-C≡C)2 Cu4 (NH3 )3 }n (2). Addition of selected phosphine and pyridine ligands transforms 2 to a range of homometallic products 3-13. All compounds have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, which reveals a surprising variety of structural complexity featuring cores with two to ten Cu+ centers. In the solid state, products 3-13 exhibit room-temperature phosphorescence across the visible spectrum in colors from blue to deep red. Lifetimes at room temperature are in the microsecond regime, and quantum yields of up to Φ=0.99 are observed.

Abstract:Six heteroleptic cuprous complexes, [(LCu)-Cu-1(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (1a), [(LCu)-Cu-1(DPEphos)](BF4) (1b), [(LCu)-Cu-2(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (2a), [(LCu)-Cu-2-(DPEphos)](BF4) (2b), [(LCu)-Cu-3(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (3a), and [L3Cu-(DPEphos)](BF4) (3b) = )L-1 = diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphane oxide, L-2 = diphenyl(8-quinolyl)phosphane oxide, (L)3 = diphenyl(2-pyridylmethyl)phosphane oxide, DPEphos = bis[2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl] ether), were prepared and fully characterized. The electronic absorption spectra and quantum chemical calculations indicate that the lowest excited states of these complexes can be assigned to the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition. In poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, these complexes exhibit blue-green to orange emissions with long lifetimes ranging from 7.5 to 28.6 mu s. With wide energy-band gaps of 3.50 and 3.28 eV, complexes 3a and 3b emit efficiently in 20 wt.-% PMMA films with photoluminescence quantum efficiencies of 0.69 and 0.72, and emission maxima at 477 nm and 495 nm, respectively. Electroluminescent devices were fabricated with these N,O-based Cu-I complexes as emitters. The best device performance, with a peak current efficiency of 4.9 cd/A, was obtained for 3b.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization and photophysical properties of a series of the four-coordinate N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper(I) complexes are reported. These NHC-Cu(I) complexes contain two bidentate ligands, the R -substituted pyridyl-imidazolylidene-type ligand and diphosphine ligand bis [(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (POP). The photophysical properties of these complexes can be adjusted depending on the nature of substituents at 4-position of the phenyl ring in the NHC ligand. The metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption band can be observed for all complexes at 348–362 nm, and the emission wavelengths can be fine-tuned to cover the spectral range of 543–555 nm with the higher photoluminescence efficiency of up to 66.2% in the solid state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were employed to support potophysical properties of the NHC-Cu(I) complexes.

Abstract:Reaction of cuprous bromide with equimolar amounts of 1,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene (dpb) affords a mononuclear three-coordinated complex [CuBr(dpb)] (F2) with dpb acting as a chelating ligand. In contrast, using cuprous iodide instead under the same conditions gives the polymeric compound [Cu2I2(dpb)]n (F1) which contains double-bridging iodine atoms. The complexes were characterized by element analysis and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Cu(I) complexes are luminescent in the solid state at ambient temperature. Intense orange emission for complex F1 is observed, with maxima at 593nm, probably ascribed to a combination of a halide-to-metal charge transfer and copper-centered d→s, p transitions. F2 exhibits a blue photoluminescence, with emission maximum at 515nm, assigned to metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states, probably mixed with some halide-to-ligand characters.

Abstract:AbstractAs a kind of photoluminescent material, CuI complexes have many advantages such as adjustable emission, variable structures, and low cost, attracting attention in many fields. In this work, two novel two‐coordinate CuI‐N‐heterocyclic carbene complexes were synthesized, and they exhibit unique dual emission properties, fluorescence and phosphorescence. The crystal structure, packing mode, and photophysical properties under different conditions were systematically studied, proving the emissive mechanism to be the locally excited state of the carbazole group. Based on this mechanism, ultralong room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a lifetime of 140 ms is achieved by selective deuteration of the carbazole group. These results deepen the understanding of the luminescence mechanism and design strategy for two‐coordinate CuI complexes, and prove their potential in applications as ultralong RTP materials.

Abstract:Here, a series of dinuclear N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper(I) complexes having 3,3′-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazolylidene as bis-NHC ligand and bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP) as auxiliary ligand have been successfully prepared, and their photophysical properites were investigaged experimentally and theocitcally. The resulting complexes all exhibited intense green to yellow emission that originated from the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 0.67 and longer excited-state lifetimes on the microsecond time scale in the solid state. Green and yellow light-emitting diode (LED) devices based on Cu(I) complexes have successfully achieved good color rendering indices. Moreover, the anti-counterfeiting patterns and QR codes made of Cu(I) complexes have been applied to clothing, banknotes, books and glass plates with excellent anti-counterfeiting effects.

Abstract:The geometric structures of 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline zinc [Zn(BQ)2] complex and its derivatives substituted by cyano-groups in the ground state and the lowest singlet excited state were optimized by B3LYP and ab initio CIS methods at LanL2DZ level, respectively. The absorption and emission spectra of these complexes were investigated by the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level with PCM model on the basis of the optimized ground and excited states geometries, respectively. The calculated lowest-lying absorptions of all complexes were attributed to ILCT transitions mainly. The calculated emissions of complexes can be described as originated from an excited state with ILCT character mainly. The calculated results showed that the absorption and emission maximums could be tuned by changing the site of the substitutions. The Zn(BQ)2 and its derivatives substituted by cyano-groups were potential electroluminescent materials with blue, green and yellow light emission.
Strong Solid-State Fluorescence Induced by Restriction of the Coordinate Bond Bending in Two-Coordinate Copper(I)-Carbene Complexes

Abstract:The photophysical properties of two-co-ordinate copper(I) complexes have become a new research hotspot due to their nearly perfect luminescent properties and low price and promising applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, we employ the hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, coupled with our early developed thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) rate formalism, to study the aggregation effect on the luminescent properties of the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene-copper(I)-Cl complex. Our calculations reveal that the transition properties changes from metal-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT) in solution to hybrid halogen ligand charge-transfer (XLCT) and MLCT in solid state, which induces the blue-shifted emission spectra from solution to solid phase. Upon aggregation, the restriction of the bending vibrations of the C-Cu-Cl and Cu-C-N bonds largely slow down the nonradiative decay, which induces strong fluorescence. This study provides a clear rationalization for the highly efficient fluorescence character of two-coordinate Cu(I) complexes.

Abstract:Herein, a series of ionic mononuclear Cu( I ) complexes, [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]Cl ( 1a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]Br ( 2a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]I ( 3a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]SCN ( 4a ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]Cl ( 1b ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]Br ( 2b ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]I ( 3b ) and [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]SCN ( 4b ) {phen = [1,10]phenanthroline; Dpq = pyrazino[2,3- f ][1,10]-phenanthroline; bdppmapy = N , N -bis((diphenylphosphino)methyl)-2-pyridinamine} have been synthesized and characterized by using IR, NMR, elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, fluorescence spectroscopy methods, and UV-vis and terahertz (THz) time-domain absorption spectroscopy. Their crystal structures were elucidated by X-ray crystallography and their photophysical properties were investigated in detail. All the above complexes exhibit a 1D to 3D supramolecular structure which is linked together by intermolecular weak interaction forces and hydrogen bonds. By regulating ligands and anions, the emission wavelengths of these complexes are quite different in the range from 533 nm to 604 nm. Theoretical calculations and photophysical properties indicate that luminescence is derived from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. In the meantime, the results of calculations show that the stabilization of the increased conjugation of the ligand-based π* orbital is ascribed to the observed bathochromic-shift in the MLCT transitions.

Abstract:Heteroleptic Cu(N^N)(P^P) complexes have garnered significant attention owing to their various structures and remarkable photophysical properties. Four novel heteroleptic copper(I) complexes (C1•2BF4ˉ, C2•3BF4ˉ, C3•3PF6ˉ and C4•3PF6ˉ) of the type {(Cu(P^P))3(μ-HATN)} synthesized by ligand conformation-directed self-assembly methodology were reported herein. These copper(I) complexes with different coordination configuration could be obtained through a straightforward change in the rigidity and volume in different P^P ligand scaffolds. Furthermore, these copper(I) complexes exhibited exceptional visible light absorption, which were contributed to metal-to-ligand charge transfer and intra-ligand charge transfer. Moreover, these emissive heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes all displayed remarkable sensitivity and selectivity towards zinc ions in “turn-on” mode (intensity enhanced ca.60 times). The detection limitation of complex C1•2BF4ˉ reached to 5.10 × 10−9 M, which was lower than those reported fluorescent sensors. The possible sensing mechanism was investigated using ESI-Ms, NMR and DFT calculation. The reversible “on-off” fluorescent sensing behavior can be restored by treating the solution alternately with EDTA tetrasodium salt and Zn2+ salt.

A Series of Blue-Green-yellow-red Emitting Cu(I) Complexes: Molecular Structure and Photophysical Performance

Abstract:In this work, we designed a series of [Cu(NN)(PPh3)2]BF4 complexes with different optical edge values and emission colors from blue to red, where NN and PPh3 denoted a diamine ligand and triphenylphosphine, respectively. Six NN ligands with various conjugation chains (short π chain, modest π chain and long π chain) were selected. A systematical comparison between these Cu(I) complexes was performed, so that the correlation between NN structure and [Cu(NN)(PPh3)2] photophysical performance was tentatively discussed. Their single crystal structure was found consistent with literature ones, forming a typical tetrahedral coordination geometry. Density functional theory calculation indicated that their onset electronic transition showed a mixed character of metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer and ligand-to-ligand-charge-transfer. Detailed analysis on photophysical parameters suggested that the absorption edge of [Cu(NN)(PPh3)2]BF4 complex was controlled by conjugation length in diamine ligand. A wide absorption edge needed a short conjugation chain in diamine ligand. Similar tendency was found for their emission spectra. In addition, a long conjugation chain in diamine ligand widened emission spectra obviously. Emission dynamics showed slim correlation with diamine ligand conjugation length since the excited state was controlled mainly by dynamic procedure and steric factor of diamine ligands.
Density Functional Calculation and Evaluation of the Spectroscopic Properties and Luminescent Material Application Potential of the N-Heterocyclic Platinum(II) Tetracarbene Complexes

Abstract:A series of reported Pt(II) carbene complexes possibly have the ability to serve as the new generation of blue emitters in luminescent devices because of their narrow emission spectra, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), and rigid molecular skeleton. However, the combination of all carbene ligands with different multidentate structures will affect the overall planarity and horizontal dipole ratio to varying degrees, but the specific extent of this effect has not previously been analyzed in detail. In this work, density functional computation is used to study a class of platinum tetracarbene bidentate complexes with similar absorption and emission band characteristics, which is the main reason for the remarkable difference in quantum efficiency due to subtle differences in electronic states caused by different ligands. From the calculation results, the major reason, which results in significantly decrease in quantum efficiency for [Pt(cyim)2]2+, is that [Pt(cyim)2]2+ can reach the non-radiative deactivation metal-centered d-d excited state through an easier pathway compared with [Pt(meim)2]2+. The result, based on changes in the dihedral angle between ligands, can achieve the goal of improving and designing materials by adjusting the degree of the dihedral angle. Structural and photophysical study of copper iodide complex with P^N or P^N^P ligand

Abstract:Two P boolean AND N-type ligands, 8-(diphenylphosphino) quinoline (L-1) and 2-[2-(diphenylphosphino) ethyl] pyridine (L-2), and two P boolean AND N boolean AND P-type ligands, 2,6-bis((diphenylphosphino) methyl) pyridine (L-3) and 2,6-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl) pyridine (L-4), were synthesized to coordinate with copper iodide (CuI). As a result, CuI complexes with rich structures, such as discrete complexes with formulae of [Cu2I2(L-1)(2)] (5), [Cu3I3(L-2)(2)] (6), and [CuI(L-3)] (7), and polymeric complexes with repeating units of [Cu2I2(L4)] (8), and [Cu3I3(L-4)] (9) were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Besides the intriguing structures, these complexes showed rich photoluminescent properties, with emission colour that varied from blue to red and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 1.6 to 29.9% in the solid state. Molecular orbital calculation and experimental study showed that the emissions involve halide to ligand charge transfer (XLCT), metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT), and/or cluster-centered (CC) excited states.
