Abstract:Change detecting land use/land cover helps assess and quantify its impact on water resources. This study aims to assess the impacts of land-use/land-cover change on water resources using the SWAT model in the Tana sub-basin, Ethiopia. The research detects and presents the changes between three LULC maps (1986, 2000, and 2014). The results suggest that over the last 28 years, the water body is the least disturbed and sub-afroalpine vegetation is the most transformed in terms of coverage. Cultivated lands gained a large area of cover from the other types. Most of the vegetation cover showed a decreased trend. Forest land and grassland decreased continuously while wetland showed a small variation compared to the other cover types. On the other hand, bush and shrubland recorded about a 1% increase in the total area and an unexpected fast decline in the second period. LULC changes would have an impact on water resources in the study area. The average annual water yield increased by 14.88 and 12.6%, baseflow increased by 18.4% and decreased by 7.16%, surface runoff increased by 12 and 16.16%, evapotranspiration decreased by 18.39 and 13.49%, for 2000 and 2014, respectively, compared to baseline 1986.

Abstract:This study evaluates the impact of climate and land use changes on the Lake Tana Basin's hydrology, using datasets on land use, weather patterns, topography, soil characteristics, and discharge. Future climate data were obtained from Global Climate Models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase Five (CMIP5) and generated using the Weather Generator (LARS-WG) tool from the Long Ashton Research Station with five distinct GCMs. Land use changes were projected using the Markov chain model based on cellular automata (CA). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to assess changes in hydrological elements between reference and future periods, with calibration and validation ensured by the Integrated Parameter Estimation and Uncertainty Analysis Tool (IPEAT). Projections indicate a 4.9 °C increase in ensemble mean annual temperature and a 16% rise in precipitation by the end of the 21st century under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5. Additionally, average annual hydrological components, including water yield, soil water, percolation, lateral flow, runoff, and actual and potential evapotranspiration, are expected to increase due to combined climate and land use changes. Therefore, it is crucial to fully understand these cumulative impacts before formulating and implementing water resource management strategies in the basin.

Abstract:AbstractAssessing the impact of land use and climate change on streamflow is important for watershed management. This study aims to examine the possible impacts of land use and climate change on the streamflow of the Jewaha catchment. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to simulate streamflow by integrating complex interactions between climate and land use/cover. The past land-use changes were determined by classifying the Landsat images from 1990, 2000, and 2018 with Earth Resource Development System (ERDAS) Imagine 2015. The potential of climate change impact was examined under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6 and RCP 8.5 emission scenarios for 2041–2070 time horizon with the baseline 1971–2000. Climate change scenarios over the catchment indicated an increasing trend in temperature, in both RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5, and variability in rainfall patterns in the catchment. The average annual temperature will increase by 0.1 °C and 0.15 °C for the RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 scenarios, respectively. Generally, the result indicated that in the future summer streamflow highly increases due to climate and land-use change and a decrease in the dry season because of the changes in the climate variables.
Modeling change of Land use on Hydrological Response of River by Remedial Measures using Arc SWAT: Case of Weib Catchment, Ethiopia

Abstract:Ethiopia has altered natural ecosystems through experiencing a huge amount of land use change has effect on the hydrological condition. Therefore, this study was initiated to compare the past and potential future change of land use with its effect the hydrological response of the Weib catchment which is found in the upper Genale Dawa River basin which covers a total area of 7407.42km2. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool model was used to compare the impact of land use change on stream flow of the study area. The study was used model by using readily available spatial and temporal data and calibrated against measured discharge. The analysis of land use change has shown that the Settlement area has increased from 12.8% to 30.8%, cultivated land from 10.8% to 39.1% between 1986 and 2010, while area of Forest has reduced from 32.5% to 9.4 % and Grassland from 20.9% to 12.3%. The performance of the model was evaluated based on performance rating criteria, coefficient of determination, Nash and Sutcliff efficiency values for monthly runoff were 0.85 and 0.81during calibration, 0.88 and 0.87 during validation, respectively. The evaluation of the model response to changes indicated that the mean wet monthly flow for 2010 land cover enlarged by 40.7 % from 1986 land cover. Similarly, the 1986 land cover mean month flow was higher by 10% than the 1995 land cover flow for wet months. The dry average monthly flow was less by 45.2 %, for 2010 and 26 % for 1995 land covers when compared to that of 1986 land cover. The rapid conversion of Forest and Grassland cover to Urban and cultivated land resulted in higher peak flow and less base flow on Weib river hydrology.

Abstract:Abstract Changes in Land Use Land Cover (LULC) are currently one of the greatest pressing issues facing the watershed, its hydrological properties of soil, and water management in catchment areas. One of the most important elements impacting streamflow in watersheds is LULC change. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect and future predication of LULC change on streamflow of the Fetam watershed by using Cellular Automata (CA)-Markov in IDRISI software. To analyze the impact of land use/cover change on streamflow, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) calibration and validation model was used. LULC map was developed by using Cellular Automata (CA)-Markov in IDRISI software, and the coverage of LULCs was including parameters of cropland, vegetation, grassland, Built-up area/Urban and water body. The findings of this study showed that the major challenges of land use/cove changes were rapid population increase, farming, and industrial activity. During the study period (2000–2020), most portions of the water body, vegetation, and grassland were changed into cropland and constructed by building. Cropland and construction areas increased by 15% and 46.95%, respectively, whereas water bodies, vegetation, and grassland decreased by 62.7%, 70.02%, and 38.1%, respectively. According to the forecasted results for the period of 2030–2040, cropland and built-up areas are increased, while vegetation, grassland, and water bodies were decreased . The SWAT model's calibration and validation performance was evaluated using the streamflow of the most sensitive parameters. For the years 2000–2004, and 2005–2012, the models were calibrated and validated, and the results showed good agreement between observed and simulated streamflow, with NSE and R 2 values of 0.88 and 0.72 and 0.9 and 0.85, respectively. The results of this study indicated that the seasonal streamflow was decreased from 2000 to 2010 and 2010–2020 years during the dry and rainy seasons. In general, the impacts of land use/cover change on streamflow are significant considerations for planning and implementing water resource projects. In order to address the risks, effective land-use planning and climate-resilient water management strategies will be improved.

Abstract:Land cover and land use changes in Kenya’s Rift Valley have altered the hydrologic response of the River Njoro watershed by changing the partitioning of excess rainfall into surface discharge and groundwater recharge. The watershed contributes a significant amount of water to Lake Nakuru National Park, an internationally recognized Ramsar site, as well as groundwater supplies for local communities and the city of Nakuru. Three land use maps representing a 17-year period when the region underwent significant transitions served as inputs for hydrologic modeling using the Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment (AGWA) tool, a GIS-based hydrologic modeling system. AGWA was used to parameterize the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a hydrologic model suitable for assessing the relative impact of land cover change on hydrologic response. The SWAT model was calibrated using observation data taken during the 1990s with high annual concordance. Simulation results showed that land use changes have resulted in corresponding increases in surface runoff and decreases in groundwater recharge. Hydrologic changes were highly variable both spatially and temporally, and the uppermost reaches of the forested highlands were most significantly affected. These changes have negative implications for the ecological health of the river system as well as Lake Nakuru and local communities.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of LULC changes on several hydrological components of the upper watershed of the Subarnarekha river basin, Jharkhand, India. Several hydrological components of the water balance were simulated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Three scenarios were generated using a combination of climatic data for the years (1997–2020) and LULC data for the years (2000, 2012, and 2020). The model was run successfully for the calibration and validation period using monthly stream flow data. Sixteen model parameters were applied for sensitivity analysis. RCHRG_DP and ALPHA_BF were found to be the most sensitive parameters. The components of the water balance were calculated accurately. The outcome of this study shows the decrease in evapotranspiration, recharge to deep aquifer and shallow aquifer, and the increase in surface runoff due to urban development and negative change in forest cover over the study area. A significant increase in surface runoff is viewed as a negative impact on watersheds or river basins that balances the hydrological process. In general, the increased surface runoff may intensify the environmental problem by accelerating erosion and sedimentation. The findings of this study will be beneficial to the hydrological community, water resource managers, and decision-makers active in agricultural water management and soil conservation as well as those working to mitigate increased surface runoff and floods from the perspective of LULC transformation and climate change.

Abstract:Water is life. It is an important element of the social and economic well-being of society. Kenya is a water-scarce country, ranked as 21st globally for the worst levels of water accessibility. The town of Eldoret is currently experiencing rapid population growth, resulting in ever-growing water demand. On the other hand, climate variability, land cover, and land use changes have altered the hydrologic response of the Kaptagat catchment, one of the major sources of water for Eldoret. This study uses the SWAT model in seeking to evaluate the impact of land use change and climate variability on the catchment yield, resulting in high variations in river flows and storage reservoir levels, and suggests possible mitigation measures to improve the yield. The model was customized for the study area, calibrated, and validated, and simulations were done to establish the changes in yield and river flow over time. This study observes that with time, land use changed due to increased settlement in the catchment, resulting in a decrease in forest cover (natural and planted) from approximately 37% in 1989 to 26% in 2019. Rainfall events also decreased but became more intense. The results of the changing land use and climate variability were changes in the catchment hydrologic response, occasioned by increased surface runoff and decreased baseflow and groundwater recharge, hence the high variations in water levels at the Elegirini and Two Rivers dams in the catchment during the dry and wet seasons, as modeled. The modeling of the catchment management scenarios indicates groundwater recharge increased by 17% and surface runoff decreased by 9%. Therefore, if the ongoing afforestation, reafforestation, and terracing practices by farmers (although small-scale) increasing vegetation cover in the catchment are adhered to, the catchment response regime will improve significantly with time, despite the increasing climatic variability.

Abstract:Abstract The Lake Tana basin hosts more than three million people and it is well known for its water resource potential by the Ethiopian government. The major economic activity in the region is agriculture, but the effect of agricultural crops on water resources is poorly understood. Understanding the crop water interaction is important to design proper water management plans. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to investigate the effect of different agricultural crops on the spatial and seasonal variability of water balance components of Gilgelabay, Gumara, and Ribb catchment areas of Lake Tana basin, Ethiopia. To this end, the hydrologic model SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used to simulate the water fluxes between 1980 and 2014. The water balance components, which were mapped for each hydrologic response unit, indicated the spatial variations of water fluxes in the study. Cereal crops like teff and millet had significant effect in enhancing groundwater recharge, whereas leguminous crops like peas had significant impact in increasing runoff generation. Moreover, the model outputs showed that the total streamflow is dominated by baseflow and about 13%, 9%, and 7% of the annual rainfall goes to the deep aquifer system of Gilgelabay, Gumara, and Ribb catchment areas, respectively.

Abstract:The impact of climate change (CC) and land-use/land-cover (LULC) change on water resources poses a major threat globally. This study investigates the separate and combined responses of CC and LULC change on water balance in Gidabo watershed, Ethiopia, using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), Cellular Automata-Markov Chain, and regional climate models. CC projection under RCP 4.5 and hydrological modeling show a significant decline in mean annual surface runoff (Q), baseflow (BF), water yield (WY), percolation (PC), and evapotranspiration (ET) during mid-century (2027–2056) as well as late-century (2061–2090) compared to the baseline period (1988–2018) data, largely due to decline in rainfall. Likewise, under RCP 8.5 scenario, the modeling results show a decrease in Q, BF, WY, PC, and ET during these periods. The LULC change (often associated with an expansion in cultivated and urban areas and a reduction in evergreen forest and grassland) alone leads to a positive synergy with an increase in mean annual Q and WY and a negative synergy with a decrease in BF, PC and ET during the period 2018 to 2075. The combined effects of climate and LULC changes have also shown a decline in Q, BF, WY, PC and ET. Overall, the climate change impacts significantly the future Q and WY. However, the combined effect of climate and LULC changes on BF, PC, and ET is more prominent than their separate impacts and it underlines the significance of this study.

Abstract:Abstract Land use/cover (LULC) and climate are significant environmental factors that influence watershed hydrology across the globe. The present study attempts to understand the consequences of existing changing patterns of climate and LULC on the hydrology of the Usri watershed. Different water balance components were simulated using a semi-distributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. Sixteen scenarios were generated using combinations of four periods of climatic data (1974–84; 1985–1995; 1996–2006 and 2007–2016) and four sets of land use maps (1976; 1989; 2000 and 2014). The SWAT model performed well for monthly stream flows during calibration and validation. The study finds that the individual impact of LULC change contributes to increase in the streamflow and decrease in evapotranspiration (ET) primarily due to increase in urbanization and decrease in water bodies, forest cover and barren land of Usri watershed. The combined impact of climatic variations and land use change reveals complex interactions. The study provides insight into hydrological response to variations in climate and land use changes in Usri watershed in recent decades. The results of this study can be beneficial to the authorities, decision-makers, water resource engineers and planners for the best water resource management approaches in the perspective of climate change and LULC transformation of similar ecological regions as that of Usri.

Abstract:Random Forest‐based land use/cover classification is an effective way to classify satellite data. Cultivated land and built‐up areas significantly increased at the expense of forests, grasslands, and shrublands from 1983 to 2022 in the Blue Nile Basin. Water bodies also increased due to the construction of small and large dams for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. Monitoring land use change dynamics is critical for tackling food security, climate change, and biodiversity loss on a global scale. This study is designed to classify land use and land cover in the upper Blue Nile River Basin (BNRB) using a random forest (RF) algorithm. The Landsat images for Landsat 45, Landsat 7, and Landsat 8 are used for classification purposes. The study area is classified into seven land use/land cover classes: cultivated lands, bare lands, built‐ups, forests, grazing lands, shrublands, and waterbodies. The accuracy of classified images is 83%, 85%, and 91% using the Kappa index of agreements. From 1983 to 2022 periods, cultivated lands and built‐up areas increased by 47541 and 1777 km2, respectively, at the expense of grazing lands, shrublands, and forests. Furthermore, the area of water bodies has increased by 662 km2 due to the construction of small and large‐scale irrigation and hydroelectric power generation dams. The main factors that determine agricultural land expansion are related to population growth. Therefore, land use and land cover change detection using a random forest is an important technique for multispectral satellite data classification to understand the optimal use of natural resources, conservation practices, and decision‐making for sustainable development.

The results show a continuous expansion of barren, built-up, and cropland areas, and a contraction of forests, shrubs, and grassland areas. Abstract:Kenya's catchments has both natural and disturbed environments. Within these environments, there has been interaction between hydrological, physical and ecological characteristics. Therefore, impacts of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) change on surface and sub - surface hydrology needs to be well understood due to the increasing population competing for scarce natural resources such as water, trees and forest land. The water balance components' spatial and temporal dynamics in relationship to the LULC change between 2003 and 2018 in the Lower Nzoia Sub - Catchment (LNSC) in Kenya was therefore assessed. Landsat data with 30 m (m) spatial resolution was used in understanding LULC dynamics of the study area using Supervised Classification Approach (Interactive Classification Method) in ArcGIS 10.5. After landsat image classification, key water balance components including; surface runoff (SURFQ), lateral flow (LATQ), groundwater recharge (BASEQ), deep acquifer recharge (DEEPQ), evapotranspiration (ET) and groundwater revap (REVAP) for years 2003 and 2018 were estimated using SWAT model in ArcSWAT. The overall accuracies for 2003 and 2018 classified images were 75.9% and 98.9% respectively which are showing good values. The results of the study showed that agricultural land coverage reduced from 83.1% in 2003 to 78.6% in 2018. Rangeland on the hand increased from 6.3% to 9.8% while urban/built - up area increasing from 10.6% to 11.6%. The annual water balance components from the LULC distribution of the two time periods shows that ET reduced, SURFQ increased, BASEQ reduced, DEEPQ reduced, LATQ reduced and REVAP reduced. At catchment level, results show that 2018 had a higher water balance than 2003 which can partly be explained by land cover decrease. The relationship between rainfall distribution, Land Surface Temperature (LST) and LULC change were further compared. At the same time, the study found out that there is limited focus to date on rural communities climate adaptive capacity. Hence, water institutions in the sub - catchment such as Water Resources Authority (WRA) are yet to fully mainstream adaptive capacity into their organizational structure and policies.

Abstract:Abstract This paper was aimed to study the impact of climate change on the hydrology of Andasa watershed for the period 2013–2099. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) was calibrated and validated, and thereby used to study the impact of climate change on the water balance. The future climate change scenarios were developed using future climate outputs from the Hadley Center Climate Model version 3 (HadCM3) A2 (high) and B2 (low) emission scenarios and Canadian Earth System Model version 2 (CanESM2) Representative concentration pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. The large-scale maximum/minimum temperature and rainfall data were downscaled to fine-scale resolution using the Statistical Downscaling Model (SDSM). The mean monthly temperature projection of the four scenarios indicated an increase by a range of 0.4–8.5 °C while the mean monthly rainfall showed both a decrease of up to 97% and an increase of up to 109%. The long-term mean of all the scenarios indicated an increasing temperature and decreasing rainfall trends. Simulations showed that climate change may cause substantial impacts in the hydrology of the watershed by increasing the potential evapotranspiration (PET) by 4.4–17.3% and decreasing streamflow and soil water by 48.8–95.6% and 12.7–76.8%, respectively. The findings suggested that climate change may cause moisture-constrained environments in the watershed, which may impact agricultural activities in the watershed. Appropriate agricultural water management interventions should be implemented to mitigate and adapt to the plausible impacts of climate change by conserving soil moisture and reducing evapotranspiration.

Abstract:The main objective of this study was to assess the hydrological response of the Choke mountain range to land use dynamics. Two watersheds, Muga and Suha watersheds, were selected for detailed evaluation and analysis. The study was conducted using integrated applications of remote sensing and the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The SWAT model was calibrated using Sequential Uncertainty Fitting (SUFI-2) algorithm in SWAT-CUP. Decadal land use maps (1985, 1995, and 2005) were used to simulate the hydrological responses. Simulated model results showed that over the past two decades (1985–2004), the total annual surface and lateral streamflows in the watershed increased at a rate of 1.2 mm/year and 0.57 mm/year, whereas the annual total groundwater flow and percolation in the basin decreased at a rate of 1.6 mm/year and 1.77 mm/year respectively. The decrease in the streamflow was more pronounced during the dry season (October to May), for which statistically significant declines of the base flow or the low flow at a rate of 0.37 m3/year and 0.73 m3/year in the Muga and Suha watersheds, respectively, were found. In the wet season (June to September), the peak flow has increased by 50% in Muga and 94% in Suha watersheds. Results of this study showed that the SWAT model can be an effective and useful tool for the assessment of response of watersheds to land use alterations.

Abstract:Upper-Brantas watershed in East Java, Indonesia, is a tropical watershed experiencing rapid landscape change, a phenomenon typical to developing countries. This study demonstrates the impact of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes on surface runoff in a tropical, urbanized, and data scarce watershed. The LULC changes were quantified between 1995 and 2015 and their impact on the hydrological processes was analyzed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. During the study period, the watershed experienced an increase in settlement and dryland agriculture, and a decrease in the forest, rice field, and sugarcane plantation. The SWAT model results for the calibration (2003–2008) and validation (2009–2013) periods matched observed values [R<sup>2</sup> > 0.91 and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency) >0.91]. In the long-term, the model predicted changes in runoff (+8%), water yield (+0.28%), groundwater (−1.8%), and evapotranspiration (−1.15%) due to changes in LULC. LULC changes showed a linear relationship with runoff generation, and the most significant factors affecting surface runoff were changes in the forest, agriculture, and settlements. Increasing urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural intensification will increase runoff which in turn will enhance the flow of nutrients and sediments into the water bodies.

Abstract:Abstract. Streamflow can be affected by a number of aspects related to land use and can vary promptly as those factors change. Urbanization, deforestation, mining, agricultural practices and economic growth are some of the factors related to these land use changes which alter the stream flow. In the present study, the impact of land use land cover change (LULC) on stream flow is studied by using SWAT model for Tungabhadra river basin, located in the state of Karnataka, India. Tungabhadra river originates in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and flows towards north-east and joins the river Krishna. The land use maps of 1993, 2003 and 2018 are used for assessing the stream flow changes with respect to LULC. Calibration and validation of the model for streamflow was carried out using the SUFI-2 algorithm in SWAT-CUP for the years 1983–1993 and 1994–2000 respectively. Statistical parameters namely Coefficient of Determination (R2) & Nash–Sutcliffe (N-S) were used to assess the efficiency and performance of the SWAT model. It was found that the observed and simulated streamflow values are closely matching, which in turn projects that the model results are acceptable. The calibrated model was used for simulation of future dynamic land use scenario to assess the impact on streamflow. The results can be used for conservation of water and soil management.
Impacts of Land-Use Change, Associated Land-Use Area and Runoff on Watershed Sediment Yield: Implications from the Kaduna Watershed

Abstract:An uncontrolled sediment influx from the watershed upstream is a known threat to dam stability, while the pattern and amount of sediment yield are influenced by the predominant upstream land-use and land cover (LULC) types, precipitation amount, and intensity. Hence, the need to monitor sediment yield accumulation and its controlling factors in dam operation becomes crucial. In this paper, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to assess the roles of land-use change, land cover area, and runoff on watershed’s sediment yield based on change detection analysis between 1975 and 2013 in the Kaduna Watershed (Nigeria), Western Africa. The SWAT standard procedures for the simulation of hydrological characteristics and sediment yields prediction were adopted. The datasets were calibrated for a period of 46 years and validated using 2015–2017 measured flow data, and suspended sediments concentration (SSC) acquired between March and October 2018. The model function was statistically determined using the Nash-Sutcliffe (NS), the coefficient of determination (r2) and the percentage of observed data (p-factor). The evaluation results of the SWAT model yielded NS, r2 and p-factor of 0.71, 0.80, and 0.86, respectively. These data suggest that the model performed satisfactorily for streamflow and sediment yield predictions. Findings suggest that the extinction of evergreen forests and a significant change in land-use from range grasses and forest to agriculture generic and residential types between 1975 and 2013, which resulted in surface runoff, sediment yield, and flow alteration. Evapotranspiration increased by 22.40% between 1975 and 2013. These changes have negatively impacted the watershed runoff by 56.00% and model sediment yield by 68.00% at the end of 2013. Thus, these variations can influence various human activities in the watershed, such as food security, livestock, energy production and water supply. It is hypothesized from the presented data that land use types exact a more dominant control on runoff and sediment yield than land cover area, although climatic influence may not be ruled out.

Abstract:This study examined land use/land cover (LULC) changes in Chemoga watershed of the Upper Blue Nile Basin, comprising four distinct agroecological regions: Wet Wurch, Moist Dega, Moist Weyna Dega, and Moist Kolla. We used multi-temporal Landsat images from 1985 to 2020, a hybrid classification method and the Cellular Automata-Markov model to analyze historical and predict future (2020–2060) LULC changes under business-as-usual (BAU) and land conservation (LC) scenarios. Magnitudes and patterns of spaciotemporal LULC changes were analyzed using intensity analysis. Cropland expanded across all agroecologies from 1985 to 2020, with Moist Kolla experiencing the highest increase at the expense of woodland, due the introduction of commercial farming to this hotter, less populated and inaccessible area. Moist Dega exhibited the highest allocation changes within cropland and forest, attributable to farmers' adoption of rotational land use to rehabilitate extensively degraded cultivated lands. Under the BAU scenario, projections suggest further cropland expansion at expense of woodland in Moist Kolla and built-up areas at the expense of cropland and grassland in Moist Dega. Under the LC scenario, forest cover is expected to increase at the expense of cropland across all agroecologies. The historical and projected BAU LULC change scenario substantially increased soil erosion and reduced ecosystem services. These effects can be minimized if LC scenario is properly implemented. The agroecology-based LULC intensity analysis reveals local drivers of change and associated impacts, providing vital insights for targeted land use planning in this study watershed and other watersheds facing similar challenges.
