Abstract:BACKGROUND:Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with remodeling of gastric microbiota. However, comprehensive analyses of the impact of H. pylori infection, eradication therapy and probiotic supplementation on gut microbiota are still lacking. We aimed to provide evidence for clinical decision making.METHODS:Seventy H. pylori-positive and 35 H. pylori-negative patients (group C) were enrolled. H. pylori-positive patients were randomly assigned to group A (14-day bismuth-containing quadruple therapy) and group B (quadruple therapy supplemented with Clostridium butyricum). Stool samples of group A and B were collected on day 0, 14 and 56 while stool samples of group C were collected on day 0. Gut microbiota was investigated by 16S rRNA sequencing.FINDINGS:The Sobs index (richness estimator) was significantly higher in H. pylori-positive samples than H. pylori-negative samples (p < .05). Several metabolic pathways were more abundant in H. pylori-positive communities while some disease-associated pathways had higher potential in H. pylori-negative community through KEGG pathway analysis. Abundances of most butyrate-producing bacteria significantly decreased, while several detrimental bacteria increased after eradication therapy. Probiotic supplementation was associated with improved gastrointestinal symptoms as well as increased Bacteroidetes:Firmicutes ratio.INTERPRETATION:While H. pylori infection may not be necessarily detrimental in all patients, eradication of H. pylori was associated with widespread changes in gut microbial ecology and structure. Probiotic supplementation could relieve more gastrointestinal symptoms by inducing alterations in gut microbiota and host immune responses. As such, the decision to eradicate H. pylori should be based on comprehensive analysis of individual patients.

Abstract:Unilateral mild hydronephrosis with ureteral dilatation is a condition that can be detected by careful prenatal ultrasound examination. We present such a case, in a 26 year pregnant woman with hereditary antecedents (mother with Ombredan disease). The fetal ultrasound at 34 weeks indicated a left anechogenic sinuous image, identified as dilated ureter, and connected to a grade 2 hydronephrotic kidney. Normal data regarding the other kidney and the bladder made us recommend a close follow-up, considering this case as with a good prognosis. After birth, reassessment was favourable, and at 1 year follow-up the child was in good condition, and the kidney functional. We conclude that this case is a unilateral congenital megaureter, of probably obstructive origins, with a mild hydronephrosis. A good outcome was suggested by the late diagnostic, unilateral condition, and normal fetal ultrasound description regarding morphology, biometry and amniotic fluid.

Abstract:Helicobacter pylori infection, a worldwide health issue, is typically treated with standard antibiotic therapies. However, these treatments often face resistance and non-compliance due to side effects. In this umbrella review, we aimed to comprehensively assess the impact of probiotics supplementation in different preparations on Helicobacter pylori standard treatment. We searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library from inception to June 1, 2023, to identify systematic reviews with meta-analyses that focused on eradication rates, total side effects and other outcomes of interest. The most comprehensive meta-analysis was selected for data extraction. AMSTAR 2 was used to assess quality of meta-analyses. Overall, 28 unique meta-analyses based on 534 RCTs were included. The results suggests that probiotics supplementation with pooled probiotic strains was significantly associated with improved eradication rates (RR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06–1.14) and reduced risk of total side effects (RR 0.54, 95% CI 0.42–0.70) compared with standard therapy alone. Single-strained or multi-strained preparation of probiotics supplementation showed similar results. Despite Bifidobacterium spp. showing the highest potential for eradication, the study quality was critically low for most meta-analyses, necessitating further high-quality research to explore the optimal probiotic strains or their combinations for Helicobacter pylori treatment.aq_start?>Kindly check and confirm the edit made in article title.

Abstract:Helicobacter pylori is a well-known pathogen that is highly prevalent in the world population, and H. pylori infection is potentially hazardous to humans because of its relationship to various gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastric ulcers, chronic gastritis, and gastric carcinoma. Therefore, the clinical guidelines recommend taking antibiotic therapy to eradicate the pathogen, which usually leads to the desired therapeutic effect. However, some failure cases of this therapy indicate that the increasing antibiotic resistance and side effects may affect the therapeutic effect. Here we propose that using probiotics as supplementation for antibiotic therapy may provide an extra help. Recent studies have shown that probiotic supplementation therapy has promising application prospects; it can enhance the antibiotic effect to achieve a better therapeutic result and maintain the balance of the host gastrointestinal microbiota. In summary, under global conditions of increasing H. pylori prevalence, probiotic supplementation therapy is worthy of further studies for future clinical application.

Abstract:Background: Owing to the emergence and spread of multidrug resistance mechanisms in Helicobacter pylori , achieving a successful eradication has become exceedingly difficult. Thus, this study for the first time determines the effect of a combination of vitamin D3 and probiotic on the pathogenesis and treatment of H. pylori . Methods: We established an in vitro experimental system using AGS human gastric carcinoma cells and explored the synergistic effect of Levilactobacillus brevis IBRC-M10790 and vitamin D3 on H. pylori . Live and pasteurized L. brevis , L. brevis -derived membrane vesicles (MVs), and L. brevis cell-free supernatant (CFS), as well as their combination with vitamin D3 were used during this study. We assessed the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of these combinations using RT-qPCR and ELISA, respectively. We further performed an adhesion assay to evaluate the influence of L. brevis and vitamin D3 on the adherence rate of H. pylori to AGS cells. Results: Our results demonstrated that L. brevis and vitamin D3 possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects against H. pylori infection in AGS cells. The combination of vitamin D3 with the probiotic strain (particularly live L. brevis and its CFS) can more efficiently reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, IFN-γ, and TNF-α in the AGS cells. Moreover, vitamin D3 and L. brevis exhibited an additive impact preserving the integrity of the epithelial barrier by increasing the expression of the tight junction protein ZO-1. Furthermore, this combination can potentially reduce H. pylori adherence to AGS cells. Conclusions: This study indicates the advantage of combining vitamin D3 and probiotic to attenuate H. pylori -induced inflammation and oxidative stress. Consequently, probiotic and vitamin D3 co-supplementation can be considered as a novel therapeutic approach to manage and prevent H. pylori infection.

Abstract:BackgroundThe occurrence of antibiotic‐resistant strains has been rapidly increasing due to the wide use of antibiotics. To evaluate the current effects of antibiotic resistance on Helicobacter pylori eradication efficacy, we conducted this systematic review and meta‐analysis. MethodsLiterature searches were conducted in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA version 12.0 (StataCorp LP, College Station, TX, USA). ResultsA total of 120 studies, including 28 707 patients, were assessed. Only first‐line therapy was considered. The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to clarithromycin was 0.682 (95% CI: 0.636‐0.731). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to metronidazole was 0.843 (95% CI: 0.810‐0.877). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to levofloxacin was 0.794 (95% CI: 0.669‐0.941). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to dual clarithromycin and metronidazole was 0.674 (95% CI: 0.590‐0.770). ConclusionAntibiotic resistance causes a decrease in the eradication rate of H pylori today. Quadruple concomitant therapy may overcome the declining H pylori eradication rate caused by metronidazole‐only resistance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Multiple drug resistance protein 1 (MRP1), lung resistance protein (LRP), topoisomerase IIβ (TOPOIIβ) and B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2) are well known in the development of drug resistance in cancer cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between them and the clinicopathological features, their expression differences between tumor tissue and experimental drug-resistant model in tongue carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multiple drug resistance protein 1, LRP, TOPOIIβ, and BCL2 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry in specimens from radical surgeries of 65 patients with tongue carcinoma. A cisplatin-resistance cell line, SCC-15/cisplatin, was established from a cisplatin-sensitive cell line, SCC-15. A MTT-based method was used to analyze drug potencies. Immunofluorescence was used to detect protein expression in both cell lines. Western blot was used to compare the protein expressions in specimens and SCC-15/cisplatin cells. RESULTS We found higher expression of MRP1, LRP, and BCL2 and lower expression of TOPOIIβ in tongue carcinoma compared with adjacent non-neoplastic tongue tissues (P < 0.05). In addition, MRP1 and TopoIIβ expression were significantly associated with clinical stage, lymph node metastasis and histologic grade, and LRP was significantly associated with histologic grade in the samples (P < 0.05). Finally, Western blot showed that higher expressions of MRP1, LRP, and BCL2 and lower expression of TopoIIβ were observed in SCC-15/cisplatin cells than in clinical samples. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that the high expressions of MRP1, LRP, and BCL2 and low expression of TOPOIIβ in patients with tongue carcinoma indicates that intrinsic drug resistance may exist in tongue carcinoma, and is associated with tumor differentiation and cisplatin resistance in tongue carcinoma.
Probiotic supplementation does not improve eradication rate of Helicobacter pylori infection compared to placebo based on standard therapy: a meta-analysis

Abstract:This meta-analysis included eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with the aim of determining whether probiotic supplementation can improve H. pylori eradication rates. PUBMED, EBSCO, Web of Science and Ovid databases were searched. We included RCTs that investigated the effect of combining probiotics, with or without a placebo, with standard therapy. A total of 21 RCTs that reported standard therapy plus probiotics were included. Compared to the placebo group, the probiotics group was 1.21(OR 1.21, 95% CI: 0.86, 1.69) and 1.28 (OR 1.28, 95% CI: 0.88, 1.86) times more likely to achieve eradication of H. pylori infection in intent-to-treat (ITT) analysis and per protocol (PP) analysis, respectively. Probiotics with triple therapy plus a 14-day course of treatment did not improve the eradication of H. pylori infection (OR 1.44, 95% CI: 0.87, 2.39) compared to the placebo. Moreover, the placebo plus standard therapy did not improve eradication rates compared to standard therapy alone ( P = 0.816). However, probiotics did improve the adverse effects of diarrhea and nausea. These pooled data suggest that the use of probiotics plus standard therapy does not improve the eradication rate of H. pylori infection compared to the placebo.

Abstract:Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) induces gastric mucosal inflammation, which may lead to chronic gastritis and gastric ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma, or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Managing H. pylori-related complications requires H. pylori eradication. Probiotics are one of the potential supplements that can be effective against H. pylori infection by stabilizing or restoring endogenous physiological flora and preventing H. pylori growth. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a quadruple regimen for H. pylori eradication plus probiotic supplementation. Methods: This randomized placebo-controlled trial was at a gastroenterology clinic in Kermanshah, Iran. A total of 142 H. pylori-positive subjects were randomized into either 10-day quadruple therapy (amoxicillin+ metronidazole+ pantoprazole + bismuth salt) plus placebo or quadruple therapy plus probiotic. H. pylori eradication was evaluated using a stool antigen test six weeks after treatment. The side effects of the treatment were recorded in both groups. Results: A total of three and five patients in the probiotics and placebo group did not complete the treatment or follow-up, respectively. The rate of H. pylori eradication was 44.1 and 34.8% for probiotic and placebo groups, respectively (P = 0.27). At the end of the trial, a lower rate of nausea (P = 0.004), taste disturbance (P = 0.002), headache/dizziness (P = 0.002), and flatulence/epigastric pain (P = 0.004) were recorded in the probiotic group compared to the placebo group. Conclusions: Based on the results, probiotics can be somewhat effective in eradicating H. pylori infection. Probiotic adjunctive therapy is suggested to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms when receiving antibiotic therapy.

Abstract:The microbiota within humans maintains homeostasis and plays important roles in human health. However, some situations such as the use of antibiotics may disrupt the microbiota balance and result in a series of adverse effects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a commonly used anti-Helicobacter pylori concomitant therapy on the composition of the gut and throat microbiota and any antibiotic resistance that may develop. In addition to the standard regimen, two different supplementary probiotic regimens that both used Saccharomyces boulardii were included. Microbiological culture-based techniques were used to analyse the microbiota composition and antibiotic resistance. Our results showed marked quantitative and qualitative alterations in both the gut and throat microbiota after treatment with not only the standard concomitant therapy but also with either supplementary probiotic regimen. Nevertheless, most of the changes in the gut microbiota (except for yeast and Bacteroides spp. counts) reverted by Day 71, whereas the alterations in the throat microbiota appeared to persist. Patients treated with the eradication therapy in the absence of probiotic supplementation experienced the most pronounced disturbances in the throat microbiota, whereas changes in the throat microbiota appeared to stabilize in the groups that received probiotic supplementation. We also detected higher antibiotic resistance rates for Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus spp. and Bacteroides spp. after treatment with the eradication therapy. Co-administration of probiotics is likely to be more effective than post-antibiotic supplementation, and although some beneficial effects were observed, the probiotic combination did not exert significant effects on the unbalanced commensal gut and throat microbiota composition.

Abstract:Helicobacter pylori as a class I carcinogen is correlated with a variety of severe gastroduodenal diseases; therefore, H. pylori eradication has become a priority to prevent gastric carcinogenesis. However, due to the emergence and spread of multidrug and single drug resistance mechanisms in H. pylori, as well as serious side effects of currently used antibiotic interventions, achieving successful H. pylori eradication has become exceedingly difficult. Recent studies expressed the intention of seeking novel strategies to improve H. pylori management and reduce the risk of H. pylori-associated intestinal and extragastrointestinal disorders. For which, vitamin supplementation has been demonstrated in many studies to have a tight interaction with H. pylori infection, either directly through the regulation of the host inflammatory pathways or indirectly by promoting the host immune response. On the other hand, H. pylori infection is reported to result in micronutrient malabsorption or deficiency. Furthermore, serum levels of particular micronutrients, especially vitamin D, are inversely correlated to the risk of H. pylori infection and eradication failure. Accordingly, vitamin supplementation might increase the efficiency of H. pylori eradication and reduce the risk of drug-related adverse effects. Therefore, this review aims at highlighting the regulatory role of micronutrients in H. pylori-induced host immune response and their potential capacity, as intrinsic antioxidants, for reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. We also discuss the uncovered mechanisms underlying the molecular and serological interactions between micronutrients and H. pylori infection to present a perspective for innovative in vitro investigations, as well as novel clinical implications.

Abstract:Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that colonizes the human stomach and is the leading cause of gastric diseases such as chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers, as well as the most definite and controllable risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. Currently, the regimen for H. pylori eradication has changed from triple to quadruple, the course of treatment has been extended, and the type and dose of antibiotics have been adjusted, with limited improvement in efficacy but gradually increasing side effects and repeated treatment failures in an increasing number of patients. In recent years, probiotics have become one of the most important tools for supporting intestinal health and immunity. Numerous in vitro studies, animal studies, and clinical observations have demonstrated that probiotics have the advantage of reducing side effects and increasing eradication rates in adjuvant anti- H. pylori therapy and are a valuable supplement to conventional therapy. However, many different types of probiotics are used as adjuncts against H. pylori , in various combinations, with different doses and timing, and the quality of clinical studies varies, making it difficult to standardize the results. In this paper, we focus on the risk, status, prevention, control, and treatment of H. pylori infection and review international consensus guidelines. We also summarize the available scientific evidence on using Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) as a critical probiotic for H. pylori treatment and discuss its clinical research and application from an evidence-based perspective.

Abstract:Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative microorganism that causes chronic dyspepsia, gastritis, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma. Various antibiotic regimens are employed to eradicate it; however, antibiotic resistance has skyrocketed in recent years, resulting in a reduction in eradication rates. As a result, numerous novel therapeutic approaches are being adopted in clinical practice, and probiotics are being extensively investigated. Probiotics are living bacteria that, when consumed, offer many medicinal advantages that may be accomplished by altering the amount or activity of gut flora. Their beneficial influence on gut health, immune system modulation, and cancer therapy is the subject of extensive investigation. This is owing to their perceived safety and simplicity of use. The primary objective of this review is to learn about and investigate the function of probiotics in the eradication of H. pylori, either alone or in conjunction with traditional treatments. Data have been collected from PubMed, PubMed Central, Medline, Cochrane, and Google Scholar, and relevant articles have been chosen following the PRISMA guidelines. Our search resulted in 2489 records, of which 123 full-text articles were screened for eligibility. Two reviewers independently performed the quality appraisal of 16 relevant articles, and ultimately 11 high-quality studies are included in this review. In conclusion, probiotic monotherapy does not have a significant effect on the eradication rates of H. pylori, but in conjunction with standard treatment regimens, there was mild improvement in the eradication rates but a significant reduction of side effects due to antibiotics.

Abstract:Background: Probiotic supplementation to antibiotic regimens against Helicobacter pylori infection has been proposed to improve eradication rate and to decrease detrimental effects on gut microbiota. Aims: To evaluate microbiota modifications due to a low-dose quadruple therapy with bismuth or Lactobacillus reuteri. Methods: Forty-six patients infected with H. pylori were prospectively enrolled in a single-centre, randomized controlled trial to receive b.i.d. with meals for 10 days low-dose quadruple therapy consisting of rabeprazole 20 mg and bismuth (two capsules of Pylera® plus 250 mg each of tetracycline and metronidazole), or the same dose of rabeprazole and antibiotics plus Gastrus® (L. reuteri), one tablet twice-a-day for 27 days. Stool samples were collected at the enrolment, at the end and 30–40 days after the treatment. Gut microbiota composition was investigated with 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: Eradication rate was by ITT 78% in both groups, and by PP analysis 85.7% and 95.5% for Gastrus® and bismuth group, respectively. Alpha and beta diversity decreased at the end of treatment and was associated with a reduction of bacterial genera beneficial for gut homeostasis, which was rescued 30–40 days later in both groups, suggesting a similar impact of the two regimens in challenging bacterial community complexity. Conclusions: Low-dose bismuth quadruple therapy proved to be effective with lower costs and amount of antibiotics and bismuth. Gastrus® might be an option for patients with contraindications to bismuth. L. reuteri was unable to significantly counteract dysbiosis induced by antibiotics. How to administer probiotics to prevent gut microbiota alterations remains an open question.

Abstract:Abstract More than half of the world’s population are colonized with H. pylori; however, the prevalence varies geographically with the highest incidence in Africa. H. pylori is probably a commensal organism that has been associated with the development of gastritis, ulcers, and gastric cancer. H. pylori alone is most probably not enough for the development of gastric carcinoma, but evidence for its association with the disease is high and has, therefore, been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Class 1 carcinogen. Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria positively coexisted during H. pylori infection along the oral–gut axis. The eradication therapy required to treat H. pylori infection can also have detrimental consequences for the gut microbiota, leading to a decreased alpha diversity. Therefore, therapy regimens integrated with probiotics may abolish the negative effects of antibiotic therapy on the gut microbiota. These eradication therapies combined with probiotics have also higher rates of eradication, when compared to standard treatments, and are associated with reduced side effects, improving the patient’s compliance. The eradication therapy not only affects gut microbiome but also affects the oral microbiome with robust predominance of harmful bacteria. However, there have been reports of a protective role of H. pylori in Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal adenocarcinoma, eosinophilic esophagitis, IBD, asthma, and even multiple sclerosis. Therefore, eradication therapy should be carefully considered, and test to treat policy should be tailored to specific communities especially in highly endemic areas. Supplementation of probiotics, prebiotics, herbals, and microbial metabolites to reduce the negative effects of eradication therapy should be considered. After failure of many eradication attempts, the benefits of H. pylori eradication should be carefully balanced against the risk of adverse effects especially in the elderly, persons with frailty, and intolerance to antibiotics.

Abstract:The survival and replication cycle of () is strictly dependant on intragastric pH, since enters replicative phase at an almost neutral pH (6-7), while at acid pH (3-6) it turns into its coccoid form, which is resistant to antibiotics. On these bases, it is crucial to increase intragastric pH by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) when an antibiotic-based eradicating therapy needs to be administered. Therefore, several tricks need to be used to optimize eradication rate of different regimens. The administration of the highest dose as possible of PPI, by doubling or increasing the number of pills/day, has shown to be able to improve therapeutic outcome and has often proposed in rescue therapies, even if specific trials have not been performed. A pre-treatment with PPI before starting antibiotics does not seem to be effective, therefore it is discouraged. However, the choice of PPI molecule could have a certain weight, since second-generation substances (esomeprazole, rabeprazole) are likely more effective than those of first generation (omeprazole, lansoprazole). A possible explanation is due to their metabolism, which has been proven to be less dependent on cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 genetic variables. Finally, vonoprazan, a competitive inhibitor of H+/K+-ATPase present on luminal membrane of gastric parietal cells has shown the highest efficacy, due to both its highest acid inhibition power and rapid pharmacologic effect. However current data come only from Eastern Asia, therefore its strong power needs to be confirmed outside this geographic area in Western countries as well as related to the local different antibiotic resistance rates.

Abstract:Introduction: Helicobacter pylori causes stubborn infections and leads to a variety of stomach disorders, such as peptic ulcer, chronic atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer. Although antibiotic-based approaches have been widely used against H. pylori, some challenges such as antibiotic resistance are increasing in severity. Therefore, simpler but more effective strategies are needed. Areas covered: In this review, basic information on functionalized and non-functionalized micro/nano biomaterials and routes of administration for H. pylori inhibition are provided in an easy-to-understand format. Afterward, in vitro and in vivo studies of some promising bio-platforms including metal-based biomaterials, biopolymers, small-molecule saccharides, and vaccines for H. pylori inhibition are discussed in a holistic manner. Expert opinion: Functionalized or non-functionalized micro/nano biomaterials loaded with anti-H. pylori agents can show efficient bactericidal activity with no/slight negative influence on the host gastrointestinal microbiota. However, this claim needs to be substantiated with hard data such as assessment of the biopharmaceutical parameters of anti-H. pylori systems and the measurement of diversity/abundance of bacterial genera in the host gastric/gut microbiota before and after H. pylori eradication.

Abstract:To obtain the probability distribution of two-dimensional crack patterns in mesoscopic regions of a disordered solid, the formalism of Paper I requires that a functional form associating the crack patterns (or states) to their formation energy be developed. The crack states are here defined by an order parameter field representing both the presence and orientation of cracks at each site on a discrete square network. The associated Hamiltonian represents the total work required to lead an uncracked mesovolume into that state as averaged over the initial quenched disorder. The effect of cracks is to create mesovolumes having internal heterogeneity in their elastic moduli. To model the Hamiltonian, the effective elastic moduli corresponding to a given crack distribution are determined that includes crack-to-crack interactions. The interaction terms are entirely responsible for the localization transition analyzed in Paper III. The crack-opening energies are related to these effective moduli via Griffith's criterion as established in Paper I.

Abstract:Background Eradication rates with triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infections have currently declined to unacceptable levels worldwide. Newer quadruple therapies are burdened with a high rate of adverse events. Whether multi-strain probiotics can improve eradication rates or diminish adverse events remains uncertain.Methods Relevant publications in which patients with H. pylori infections were randomized to a multi-strain probiotic or control were identified in PubMed, Cochrane Databases, and other sources from 1 January 1960-3 June 2015. Primary outcomes included eradication rates, incidence of any adverse event and the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. As probiotic efficacy is strain-specific, pooled relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using meta-analysis stratified by similar multi-strain probiotic mixtures.Results A total of 19 randomized controlled trials (20 treatment arms, n=2730) assessing one of six mixtures of strains of probiotics were included. Four multi-strain probiotics significantly improved H. pylori eradication rates, five significantly prevented any adverse reactions and three significantly reduced antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Only two probiotic mixtures (Lactobacillus acidophilus/Bifidobacterium animalis and an eight-strain mixture) had significant efficacy for all three outcomes.Conclusions Our meta-analysis found adjunctive use of some multi-strain probiotics may improve H. pylori eradication rates and prevent the development of adverse events and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, but not all mixtures were effective.
