Abstract:There are innumerable inverse kinematics solutions that can meet the demand of end-effector position and orientation for the redundant humanoid manipulator. Also each manipulator joint has its physical constraints for the connecting rod structure and figuration design. In order to make the inverse kinematics solution away from the joint position limitation maximization, an algorithm that combines geometry method and numerical iterative method is proposed to solve the inverse kinematics problem of redundant humanoid manipulator(8-DOF). Based on the derived geometric formula of the inverse kinematics problem, the "Away Limitation Level" of the humanoid manipulator is adopted as fitness function and optimization goal, and then particle swarm optimization(PSO) is used to search for the optimal combination of the redundant joint, and the optimal inverse kinematics solution can be obtained in this method. The proposed method can not only solve the multiple inverse kinematics solutions problem of the redundant humanoid manipulator, but also have some advantages, i.e., the solution no theoretical error, fast solving speed and the large margin away from the joint position limitation. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Abstract:Motion planning for robotic manipulators is a fundamental work in the research on brain-machine interface (BMI), as well as a key research issue in robotics community. Recently, algorithms for trajectory planning of end effector by learning from human demonstrations are reported, which could reduce the workload on coding for different manipulation actions. However, current approaches have at least one of the following drawbacks: (1) the generated trajectories usually are discontinuous; (2) physical limits of actuation system are not considered; (3) trajectory executive time is not optimal. This paper describes a novel method based on affine trajectory deformation to refine demonstration trajectory within manipulator's physical constraints and optimize the executive time. In the proposed method, the affine trajectory deformation is employed in joint space as an optimization problem to minimize the revision and time under the constraints on the physical limits of actuation system. The feasibility of our approach is demonstrated on the humanoid robot arm, which learned a table tennis strike and reproduced same motion as fast as possible.

Abstract:The inverse kinematics problem of exoskeleton rehabilitation robots is challenging due to the lack of a standard analytical model, resulting in a complex and varied solution process. This complexity is especially pronounced in redundant upper limb exoskeleton robots, where inefficient solutions hinder the robot's ability to adapt to the kinematic shape of the upper limb. This paper proposes a modeling and solution method based on multi-objective optimization to address the inverse kinematics of upper limb exoskeleton robots. We analyzed and validated this method using a redundant upper limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot system developed by ourselves. First, we established a multi-objective inverse kinematics solution model by defining the end-position function, joint motion comfort function, system energy consumption function, motion safety, and human-like constraints. Then, the solution was designed based on the Improved Equilibrium Optimization (IEO) algorithm and validated its computational performance in terms of optimization ability, accuracy, and robustness. Finally, we experimentally tested the inverse kinematics solution model with the IEO algorithm on discrete objectives and continuous training trajectories using a redundant upper limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot system. The results show that by incorporating the joint comfort function, system energy consumption function, and human-like constraints into the inverse kinematics model, we can not only quickly solve the inverse kinematics of redundant upper limb exoskeleton robots but also significantly improve the robot's motion shape. Furthermore, it has better solution accuracy and stronger robustness than other algorithms when solving this inverse kinematics model based on the IEO algorithm.

Abstract:The inverse kinematics (IK) problem addresses how both humans and robotic systems coordinate movement to resolve redundancy, as in the case of arm reaching where more degrees of freedom are available at the joint versus hand level. This work focuses on which coordinate frames best represent human movements, enabling the motor system to solve the IK problem in the presence of kinematic redundancies. We used a multi-dimensional sparse source separation method to derive sets of basis (or source) functions for both the task and joint spaces, with joint space represented by either absolute or anatomical joint angles. We assessed the similarities between joint and task sources in each of these joint representations, finding that the time-dependent profiles of the absolute reference frame’s sources show greater similarity to corresponding sources in the task space. This result was found to be statistically significant. Our analysis suggests that the nervous system represents multi-joint arm movements using a limited number of basis functions, allowing for simple transformations between task and joint spaces. Additionally, joint space seems to be represented in an absolute reference frame to simplify the IK transformations, given redundancies. Further studies will assess this finding’s generalizability and implications for neural control of movement.

Abstract:How to generate anthropomorphic reaching movement remains a challenging problem in service robots and human motor function repair/reconstruction equipment. However, there is no universally accepted computational model in the literature for reproducing the motion of the human upper limb. In response to the problem, this article presents a computational framework for generating reaching movement endowed with human motion characteristics that imitated the mechanism in the control and realization of human upper limb motions. This article first establishes the experimental paradigm of human upper limb functional movements and proposes the characterization of human upper limb movement characteristics and feature movement clustering methods in the joint space. Then, according to the specific task requirements of the upper limb, combined with the human sensorimotor model, the estimation method of the human upper limb natural postures was established. Next, a continuous task parametric model matching the characteristic motion class is established by using the Gaussian mixture regression method. The anthropomorphic motion generation method with the characteristics of the smooth trajectory and the ability of natural obstacle avoidance is proposed. Finally, the anthropomorphic motion generation method proposed in this article is verified by a human-like robot. The measurement index of the human-likeness degree of the trajectory is given. The experimental results show that for all four tested tasks, the human-likeness degrees were greater than 90.8%, and the trajectories' jerk generated by this method is very similar to the trajectories' jerk of humans, which validates the proposed method.

Abstract:Many rehabilitation exoskeletons have been used in the field of stroke rehabilitation. Generating human-like motion is necessary for exoskeletons to help patients perform activities of daily living (ADL) while maintaining interaction quality and ergonomics. However, most of the current motion generation algorithms utilize inverse kinematics (IK) to solve the final configuration before generation, and do not consider the movement of shoulder girdle. Separately considering the shoulder girdle motion and arm motion, this paper proposes an algorithm integrated IK to generate human-like motion. The arm moves towards the target with a bell-shaped velocity in the absence of the final configuration, and the shoulder girdle maintain natural passive motion. Moreover, the generated motion can be mapped to the configuration space of exoskeletons. Compared with the experimental data collected using a motion capture system, the values of RMSE and HPDI of the generated wrist trajectory in the task space are within 0.2 and 0.17, respectively, while those of RMSE in the joint space are within 15 deg, which demonstrates the human-like nature of the generated motion.

Geometrical Postural Optimisation of 7-DoF Limb-Like Manipulators

Abstract:Robots are moving towards applications in less structured environments, but their model-based controllers are challenged by the tasks' complexity and intrinsic environmental unpredictability. Studying biological motor control can provide insights into overcoming these limitations due to the high dexterity and stability observable in humans and animals. This work presents a geometrical solution to the postural optimisation of 7-DoF limbs-like mechanisms, which are robust to singularities and computationally efficient. The theoretical formulation identified two separate decoupled optimisation strategies. The shoulder and elbow strategy align the plane of motion with the expected plane of motion and guarantee the reachability of the end-posture. The wrist strategy ensures the end-effector orientation, which is essential to retain manipulability when nearing a singular configuration. The numerical results confirmed the theoretical observations and allowed us to identify the effect of different grasp strategies on system manipulability. The geometrical method was numerically tested in thousands of configurations proving to be both robust and accurate. The tested scenarios include left and right arm postures, singular configurations, and walking scenarios. The proposed geometrical approach can find application in developing efficient and robust interaction controllers that could be applied in computational neuroscience and robotics.

An Anthropomorphic Motion Retargeting Method Based on an Adaptive Genetic Algorithm

Abstract:A manipulator with human-like movements enables better human-machine interaction and a more intuitive experience for the operator when he or she teleoperates it. In this work, we developed an interactive interface based on the robot operating system (ROS). An adaptive genetic algorithm was used to find the optimal robot arm configuration based on the positions of the elbow and wrist of the human arm inputted by the Kinect camera and inertial measurement unit (IMU). Validating the feasibility of the proposed method were the fixed pose experiment, the continuous wave experiment, and the pick-place experiment. Comparison of the proposed method to the conventional inverse kinematics algorithm and the general genetic algorithm shows that the wrist position error obtained by the three methods is smaller, and the elbow position obtained by the proposed method is closer to the target position. Based on the proposed method, the polygonal area enclosed by the configurations of the operator's arm and the manipulator is smaller, and the anthropomorphism is better.
SU-D-BRCD-05: Evaluation of New Exit Detector Based Transit Dosimetry Software for TomoTherapy Treatments.

Abstract:PURPOSE The prospect of 3D transit dosimetry to verify treatment delivery is a novel and emerging technology in TomoTherapy. Math Resolutions, LLC, has expanded their Dosimetry Check (DC) quality control software to include transit dosimetry calculations for TomoTherapy treatments. The data recorded by the MVCT detectors during patient treatment is used in conjunction with the planning CT to calculate the delivered dose to the patient from each fraction. This study presents a summation of our experiences at the University of Virginia in collaboration with Math Resolutions in verifying and implementing the transit-dose calculation aspects of this new TomoTherapy specific product. METHODS Low and high modulation cheese phantom plans and clinical plans (prostate, GYN, pituitary, and thoracic vertebra) were used to evaluate the DC transit dosimetry software. The TomoTherapy planning CT, structure set, plan, and dose for each plan were imported into the DC software. The fluence maps were reconstructed from the exit detector data by correcting for patient attenuation and used to compute the delivered dose. The resulting dose distribution is compared with the TPS planned dose using isodose line comparison and gamma index. RESULTS The percent difference between the planned and DC calculated doses ranged between 0.63% for a low modulation cheese phantom plan to 5.94% for a prostate plan. Using criteria of 3%, 3mm, the gamma index passing rate for the tested plans ranged from 94.7% to 99.1% <1 for the overall patient area and from 88% to 96.4% for the treatment area receiving at least 80% of the prescribed dose. CONCLUSIONS The results from our evaluation of Math Resolutions' DC look promising and generally within an acceptable range for portal dosimetry programs. Further investigations will include developments to improve the DC algorithm and determine how it can best be implemented in a typical TomoTherapy clinical workflow. An Optimization-Based Model for Full-body Reaching Movements

Abstract:Background The development of a simulation model of full body reaching tasks that can predict endeffector trajectories and joint excursions consistent with experimental data is a non-trivial task. Because of the kinematic redundancy inherent in these multi-joint tasks there are an infinite number of postures that could be adopted to complete them. By developing models to simulate full-body reaching movements in 3D space we can begin to explore cost functions that may be used by the central nervous system to plan and execute these movements. Methods A robust simulation model was developed using 1) graphic-based modeling tools to generate an inverse dynamics controller (SimMechanics), 2) controller parameterization methods, and 3) cost function criteria. An adaptive weight coefficient based on the final motor task error (i.e. distance between end-effector and target at the end of movement) was proposed to balance motor task error and physiological cost terms (e.g. joint power). The output of the simulation models using different cost controller functions based on motor task error or motor task error and various physiological cost terms (e.g. joint power, center of mass displacement) were compared to experimental data from 15 healthy participants performing full body reaching movements. Results In sum, the best fit to the experimental data was obtained by minimizing motor task error, joint power, and center of mass displacement. Simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method is effective for the simulation of large-scale human skeletal systems. Conclusions This method can reasonably predict the whole body reaching movements including final postures, joint power and movement of COM using simple algebraic calculations of inverse dynamics and forward kinematics.

Abstract:This paper studies multiple inverse kinematics solutions for a 7-DOF human redundant manipulator with a special joint configuration. A method is proposed for determining the continuous joint angle vector by selecting the inverse solution from discrete multiple solutions to the continuous end path of the mechanical arm. The elbow angle constraint is introduced, and the mapping relationship from the elbow angle to the joint angle is established. Subspaces are found in the multiple solution spaces to avoid joints exceeding the limit to obtain elbow angle interval, and then combined with the collision detection technique, subspaces are sought in multiple solution spaces to avoid collisions between robotic arms and obstacles. Two subspaces are then obtained, and with use of their intersection, all feasible manipulator inverse kinematic solutions that avoid the joint limit and the obstacles at a given pose are obtained. The above method explicitly determines the complete feasible kinematic inverse solution of redundant manipulators. Finally, the validity of the methods is verified via kinematic simulations.

Abstract:Intuitive kinematic control of a redundant robot arm to track a specified end-effector trajectory is achieved via haptic devices or homogenous robots with the same degrees of freedom (DOFs) and similar mechanical structures. To improve intuitive control, this work proposes a novel method to control directly by human motion the kinematics of a redundant robot arm such that the robot is teleoperated to avoid obstacles and track a given end-effector trajectory using a gesture resembling as human's. This work proposes a kinematic control with an augmented multi-tasking method to solve the local-solution and divergence problems of previous multi-tasking methods when human motion is applied. Computer simulations with a redundant robot arm is used to validate the proposed kinematic-control method. The proposed method enables a redundant robot arm to track a specified end-effector trajectory using a gesture which closely resembles human motion.

Modeling Dual-Arm Coordination for Posture: An Optimization-Based Approach

Abstract:In the field of human modeling, there is an increasing demand for predicting human postures in real time. However, there has been minimal progress with methods that can incorporate multiple limbs with shared degrees of freedom (DOFs). This paper presents an optimization-based approach for predicting postures that involve dual-arm coordination with shared DOFs, and applies this method to a 30-DOF human model. Comparisons to motion capture data provide experimental validation for these examples. We show that this optimization-based approach allows dual-arm coordination with minimal computational cost. This new approach also easily extends to models with a higher number of DOFs and additional end-effectors.

Abstract:Vertebrates possess a biomechanical structure with redundant muscles, enabling adaptability in uncertain and complex environments. Harnessing this inspiration, musculoskeletal systems offer advantages like variable stiffness and resilience to actuator failure and fatigue. Despite their potential, the complex structure presents modelling challenges that are difficult to explicitly formulate and control. This difficulty arises from the need for comprehensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, including details such as muscle arrangement, and fully accessible muscle and joint states. Whilst existing model-free methods do not need explicit formulations, they also underutilise the benefits of muscle redundancy. Consequently, they necessitate retraining in the event of muscle failure and require manual tuning of parameters to control joint stiffness limiting their applications under unknown payloads. Presented here is a model-free local inverse statics controller for musculoskeletal systems, employing a feedforward neural network trained on motor babbling data. Experiments with a musculoskeletal leg model showcase the controller's adaptability to complex structures, including mono and bi-articulate muscles. The controller can compensate for changes such as weight variations, muscle failures, and environmental interactions, retaining reasonable accuracy without the need for any additional retraining.

Optimizing Robot Arm Reaching Ability with Different Joints Functionality

Abstract:During the process of reaching a target, a robotic arm may generate a large number of redundant movements due to the stochastic nature of planning algorithms. We think that each joint of the robotic arm has a unique functionality towards the arm's end effector. Therefore, during motion planning, we optimized the weights of each joint based on its individual functionality. We introduce the human arm operation mechanism - When a person is reaching for a distant target, the shoulder-near joints take on more actions. We proposed an advanced auxiliary loss function. By utilizing this function, we can filter out multiple solutions from the inverse model, thus reducing the amount of joint change and redundant movements. We conducted comprehensive comparative experiments on the UR3 robotic arm, and the results showed that our approach achieved better efficiency and outcomes.

Abstract:Many anatomical factors, such as bone geometry and muscle condition, interact to affect human movements. This work aims to build a comprehensive musculoskeletal model and its control system that reproduces realistic human movements driven by muscle contraction dynamics. The variations in the anatomic model generate a spectrum of human movements ranging from typical to highly stylistic movements. To do so, we discuss scalable and reliable simulation of anatomical features, robust control of under-actuated dynamical systems based on deep reinforcement learning, and modeling of pose-dependent joint limits. The key technical contribution is a scalable, two-level imitation learning algorithm that can deal with a comprehensive full-body musculoskeletal model with 346 muscles. We demonstrate the predictive simulation of dynamic motor skills under anatomical conditions including bone deformity, muscle weakness, contracture, and the use of a prosthesis. We also simulate various pathological gaits and predictively visualize how orthopedic surgeries improve post-operative gaits.

Online Balanced Motion Generation for Humanoid Robots

Abstract:Reducing the complexity of higher order problems can enable solving them in analytical ways. In this paper, we propose an analytic whole body motion generator for humanoid robots. Our approach targets inexpensive platforms that possess position controlled joints and have limited feedback capabilities. By analysing the mass distribution in a humanoid-like body, we find relations between limb movement and their respective CoM positions. A full pose of a humanoid robot is then described with five point-masses, with one attached to the trunk and the remaining four assigned to each limb. The weighted sum of these masses in combination with a contact point form an inverted pendulum. We then generate statically stable poses by specifying a desired upright pendulum orientation, and any desired trunk orientation. Limb and trunk placement strategies are utilised to meet the reference CoM position. A set of these poses is interpolated to achieve stable whole body motions. The approach is evaluated by performing several motions with an igus®Humanoid Open Platform robot. We demonstrate the extendability of the approach by applying basic feedback mechanisms for disturbance rejection and tracking error minimisation.

Abstract:The closed-form solution of each rotation joint angle is the most direct and convenient method for humanoid robot arms to imitate the real-time motion of the human arm. Occasionally, the human structure differs from that of a robot, and sensor information is inadequate. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain a closed-form solution for the inverse kinematics (IK) of a robot when using the Denavit–Hartenberg (D–H) method or screw theory alone. This study proposes combining the screw theory and the D–H method to solve the closed-form solution of the IK of a robotic arm with two unique structures: the elbow joint offset and the non-vertical state at the shoulder joint of the robotic arm. The proposed combination method first solves the elbow joint angle using screw theory. Then, the other rotation joint angles are solved using the D–H method. With the proposed method, human arm motion is successfully mapped to the corresponding joint of the robotic arm, and the closed-form solution allows the robotic arm to imitate human arm motion in real–time. Simulation results show that IK can be used to obtain high–precision angles and positions. Experiments show that the robotic arm has an accurate imitation performance, the accuracy of the -axis of the manipulator is significantly improved by 73.6%, and that of the -axis and -axis is also improved by 37.36% and 21.89%, respectively.

Motion Planning of Redundant Robotic Arm Based on Human Arm Motion Principles

Abstract:How to generate human-like arm extension motion is a challenging problem in the process of human-robot collaboration to understand and judge the robot's motion intention. To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-task planning algorithm for human-like arm motion based on the energy principle and the joint limit avoidance principle. First, a motion capture device is used to collect human arm motion data to obtain guidelines for human arm motion characteristics. On the basis of analyzing the arm demonstration data, the gravitational potential energy and virtual elastic potential energy models of the arm are established, and the mapping from the virtual variable stiffness of the arm to the virtual variable stiffness of the robot is realized. An end-effector trajectory is generated based on a dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) model and an optimization method, while a spherical linear interpolation (slerp) algorithm is used to generate the attitude sequence. In order to better execute the planned motion, the priority of the motion task is divided, and the design of two priority motion tasks is carried out by combining the gradient projection method. Finally, the humanoid arm motion multi-task planning algorithm proposed in this paper is simulated by simulation experiments, and the experimental results show that the method can generate the corresponding humanoid motions and has better motion accuracy.
